Tewkesbury is all set for a Super Summer - and inside this issue you’ll find details of where fun can be had by all the family. One of the highlights of the local entertainment calendar is the Medieval Festival, which takes place 14th-15th July (See page 22). On Saturday 14th July there are two other bustling events to enjoy: the popular Overbury Street Market (10 am-12 noon, see page 9) and Ripple Fete in the afternoon (see page 19). Another lovely Bredon Hill Village, Kemerton, stages its village fete on Saturday 7th July. There’s lots going on at Tewkesbury Abbey too: ‘Brass on the Grass’ on Sunday 8th, with tower tours offering spectacular views over the town throughout July and August (details on page 54). The award-winning Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has been enjoying a fantastic season since its restored railway line was extended to Broadway, with visitors flocking to enjoy a 28 mile round trip through the Cotswolds. A special heritage diesel gala takes place 27th29th July (see page 56). If you want more steam of a different kind, then the Welland Steam Rally & Country Fair (also 27-29 July) could be just what you are looking for.
WIN FAMILY TICKETS Let battle commence: Tewkesbury Medieval Festival from the air
It’s festival season too: over at the Cross Keys, Bredon’s Hardwick, there is a three day ale celebration (20th-22nd July) with live music and a wide range of beers and ciders. Find out more on page 53. Looking ahead, festival fever returns to Croft Farm in September with a brand new cider and music weekend on the site of the original Lakefest. (See page 42). There’s lots more to look forward to as well - check out regular what’s on listings on page 33, the live music round-up on page 35, and our comprehensive guide to eating out locally on pages 33-35. Have fun!

‘A Grace’ by Paul Lynch Paperback, £8.99 The background to this beautifully scripted story is the Great Irish Famine, the harsh realities of what the Emerald Isle and it's people endured are sketched on every page. The language the author evokes even makes some of these events seem somehow magical, the writing is certainly that! Grace Coyle is a teenage girl who, as the eldest child in a growing family is forced by her mother, Ruth to leave their small cottage, and with her hair shorn off is dispatched to try to make her way dressed as a young boy. Her nearest sibling, brother Colly wants to go with her, but is not allowed to, nonetheless he runs away and immediately joins Grace and they set off on their travels. Despite the events that Grace endures, Colly is a constant companion and witness to her troubles. Grace suffers many deprivations over the miles of Irish roads that she treads. She finds work helping drove a herd of cattle south, this provides some constancy for a while, until disaster strikes, and she has to head off again, sheltering in deserted barns and homes no more than hovels, in one of which she learns of work on a road building scheme which for a while gives her regular pennies earned before an incident leads her and fellow worker Bart to start travelling again. They eventually meet up with McNutt, an acquaintance of Bart's
Everything for your Summer feasting! and the group survive by intrigue and some robbery, and other criminal means until events again implode. Famine and fever are constant companions and threats until Grace herself is close to death only to be rescued and brought back to health in a strange religious sect. How Grace's story evolves is the structure of the book, but somehow throughout the novel you know she will survive, but it is "the how" that turns the pages. There are few books where the language is so evocative, descriptive in it's beauty, which helps offset the horrors and travails of the open road, and Grace's and Colly's journey. There is hardly a page where a sentence or two does not stop the reader to sample and taste the skill of the writer; yet it is in no way overwritten, far from it, just a book to experience, remember and quite possibly to read again. Certainly one for some of our local book clubs, and not one to hurry. Selected by: Ian B. Nicholson Owner/Manager Alison’s Bookshop Tewkesbury

VILLAGE PREPARES FOR FORTIETH ANNUAL STREET MARKET July has come around again and the people of Overbury, situated just north east of Tewkesbury, are busy preparing for the major event of their Summer calendar. The annual Street Market, which attracts visitors from all over the area, will be held in the beautiful Bredon Hill village on Saturday 14th July.

The bustling scene at 2017’s Overbury Street Market
The market, which celebrates its fortieth birthday this year, takes place between 10am and 12noon against a picturesque backdrop of stone cottages, St Faith’s Church (dating back to Norman times) and the 18th century Overbury Court. During a hectic two hours, there are lots of opportunities to pick up unusually high quality bargains. A local food range will

Other stalls have a huge range of things including books, toys, CDs, plants, crafts, garden seating, jams and preserves; the list goes on and on. Whitcombe Garden (a member of the National Gardens Scheme) opens for relaxation and meandering, and the Friends of Overbury School will be organising fun activities for children. The raffle has magnificent prizes to be won, and there is a good bottle stall and tombola too. Mouth-watering bacon butties can be enjoyed - and are ready prior to market opening. Car parking and entry are both free. The organisers regret that no dogs are allowed. If very wet, the market will take place in the Village Hall. I am sure younger readers will shrug off the demolition of this building in the name of progress and to make way for Morrison’s petrol station, writes John Dixon. Pullin’s Hovel, however, does seem to have been a familiar land mark for older generations, attracting a fair share of memorable accidents - and photographers in time of flood. Today ‘hovel’ is an insulting term but it labelled a brick barn in Saladine’s Meadow - the modern causeway replaced a bridge of that name, named after our worthy adversary in the Crusades.Mary Lodwig’s late father remembered that Mr. Pullin used to look after the horses there for Tewkesbury Fire Brigade. The building was in the 1960s used by a selfemployed Saw-Doctor. As they did in that era, two butchering families, the Gannaways and the Pullins, united themselves by marriage with the Pullins. The latter family ran a butcher’s shop in 15-16 Barton Street (now a vaping shop) and then the King’s Head pub, which is now a housing development at 41 Barton Street. Ox roasts were a favourite traditional means of raising money for charity – but by 1960 the tradition had died out.

New book celebrates lives of local Suffragettes In February 1918 an Act of Parliament gave most women over the age of 30 the right to vote, writes Ian B. Nicholson. As all men over 21 were also enfranchised at the same time, it was not as significant as some campaigners had hoped for, but still a very historic milestone. Gloucestershire publisher The History Press' recent publication “Votes for Women - Cheltenham and the Cotswolds” written by Sue Jones, records the experiences of local ladies, and that Keir Hardie the Labour politician, and friend to the Pankhurst family spoke in both Cheltenham and Gloucester, so there were some influential connections to the local activists. It seems if you could afford the fine of ten shillings then imprisonment could be avoided. A case from 1913 when three women were caught by a policeman sticking placards reading “Dare to be Free” onto postboxes in Cheltenham, two could afford to pay the fine, while the third was locked up for fourteen days. This book features the expansion of Cheltenham Suffragettes into Tewkesbury and Winchcombe. The impe-
tus locally was directed mainly from Cheltenham. Stroud and Cirencester had their own branches, Tewkesbury did not.
Whilst Tewkesbury's MP, Hicks-Beach was not in favour of female enfranchisement, the representative in Cheltenham, Agg-Gardner was. So it took time for any Tewkesbury movement to start, initially beginning in Winchcombe, where support existed, and a “Tewkesbury Division” was created. Mrs Grace Healing, wife of the Tewkesbury mill owner, was one of several influential and wealthy ladies who were
active supporters, as were others from the villages including Mrs Mercier, widow of Kemerton's Rector. The Watson Hall was used for some meetings, also the Abbey Schoolroom where a satirical duologue called “A Chat with Mrs Chickey” was performed by the Secretary of the Cheltenham branch, Miss Flora Kelley, and Union official Dr Alice Burn. This book, which is available at Alison's Bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street (price £14.99) records the activities of many ladies from Gloucestershire, and adjoining counties, faithfully detailing their actions as the movement expanded. An engrossing read for anyone interested in this very topical subject this anniversary year. Ian B. Nicholson
The Number One Question... What’s the number one answer 'Let Only' landlords or landlords who advertise on Gumtree give us when we ask why not have their property managed by a letting agent? Cost. This is a big factor in any transaction, but we all have busy lives, we’re all dashing about trying to fit 1000 things into 24 hours, and personally, do you know what means more to me? The thing I can never get back? Time. Now, both of these types of landlords, both have to give up their valuable time, which as we know they will never get back looking after that property, making sure they remain compliant and keeping their tenant happy. Did you know it takes letting agents on average a whopping 17 hours to move a tenant in? This includes all the
viewings, getting paperwork together, all the various safety certificates and chasing referencing. However, this is just the start, this isn’t even before you consider the time involved in the day to day once the tenancy begins. Do you have this kind of time to throw away? It is estimated that close to 170 different legislation changes or new legislation has been introduced into the private lettings sector in the last 5 years. You may say, ‘well I have steady tenants who have been in the property 10 years and pay rent and don’t cause me any problems.’ Lucky you! But I’m afraid letting a property ten years ago, isn’t the same now that it was then and it’s a minefield getting it right.
reality if you miss even one of the steps. Every single tenancy you manage must be compliant in these areas, as not only could you have fines of £20,000, but face prison time, and you may not be able to get your tenant out when you want the property back. So, before you immediately put your investment stock on the market to sell, consider who can take this pain away from you. Every day our day job, is to do this kind of stuff. It’s all we know as letting agents, it’s our business to be experts in it and keep up with it as it constantly changes. Do you want more time to do the things you enjoy? Then I think you know what to do.
Fines, prosecution, Jail. These are all

We all knew that the National Star College at Ullenwood was a centre for young Adults with disabilities but the presentation by Mary Peterson made us realise what fantastic work is done there to give these students the chance to realise their aspirations. From small beginnings in 1967 the College now has a large Campus with purpose built accommodation, treatment rooms, a bistro etc. It has also expanded into Gloucester, Malvern, Hereford and Wales. Fundraising is an ongoing necessity and any support would be much appreciated. At our meeting on July 11th the talk by Pam Slater is entitled ‘’Pearls”. Visitors and new members are welcome. PAIN PATTERNS with Katie Hogg, Two Rivers Osteopathy Pain levels can fluctuate depending on different factors. Age, activity, gender and history of an injury can all result in different pain feeling. One sure thing to remember is that pain is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Some pain is a simple warning to not push it too much and other pain can stop you in your tracks. Whatever the pain it should not be ignored.
We are here to listen and learn about you and your business and help to make the complicated understandable. We will give you professional advice, and ensure you meet your accountancy and taxation compliance needs.
Unit 29, Basepoint Business Centre Oakfield Close, Tewkesbury, Glos GL20 8SD
I often get asked about pain medication. I am not qualified to recommend pain killers, this is a question for your doctor or pharmacist. However, along with hydrotherapy advice (ice or heat), exercises and education into your injury an osteopath can assist in your decision of how to deal with and manage your pain. Generally, stiffness and discomfort caused by a loss in joint movement is worse in the morning and will free up after 30 minutes to 1 hour of movement. This type of pain likes movement and doesn’t like rest. Muscle strains and or tears like to have gentle movement and rest together and often feel better initially after movement but can fatigue quickly resulting
in further injury. Inflammatory pain tends to be worse at night and better in the day when movement and gravity can help blood flow around the body. Pain you can put your finger on is often joint pain. Pain which covers a greater area and is difficult to find the epicen-
tre is generally muscle. There is a huge cross over between these patterns but this is a general rule of thumb and can help in your treatment of pain by knowing if you should medicate, what to medicate with and when, if you should be active and how active. By Katie Hogg T. 01684 296884

TEWKESBURY’S GIANT MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL Saturday 14th July and Sunday 15th July 2018 It was 35 years ago that a group of people, generally dismissed as useless Hippies, got together to stage the first Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. Now, older, but, they admit not much wiser they are, with the help of more recently recruited enthusiasts, busily preparing to do it yet again. Brightly coloured banners are starting to appear outside shops, and posters featuring Queen Margaret of Anjou are popping up everywhere. What started off all those years ago as a one off small event, is now one of the biggest and highest regarded events of its kind, welcoming participants and visitors from all over Europe and beyond. Despite its huge suc-
cess it is still at heart a recreation of a traditional country event, based around a re-enactment of the time the future of the whole country hung on the outcome of a battle, fought on fields just outside the town. The Battle of
Tewkesbury, which in 1471 brought the wars of the Roses to an end, with the Yorkists firmly on throne of England is re-enacted there every year on part of the site of the original battle. Enthusiasts travel from all over the world to take part in or watch it at the annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival. The festival also offers a bustling medieval market, with craftsmen and women of all kinds, beer tents, with a range of traditional ales and cyders, and live entertainment
throughout the day. Younger visitors can listen to the story tellers in their magical gardens or try their hands at Medieval based arts and Crafts in the Bright Knight tent, although they are warned to beware of dragons, they have been known to make a hungry appearance around meal times. To sum up there really is something for everyone, with even more going on in the town itself. Entry is free, but be prepared to be generous to our bucket rattlers, we need money for next
year’s event. Tewkesbury is about half a mile from junction 9 of the 5 and the nearest railway station is Ashchurch for Tewkesbury. Bus Service 41 stops very close to the site.
Parking is available for a small charge. Accommodation, including camping is available close to the site, contact Tewkesbury Tourist Information Centre. By Peggy Clatworthy.

The Berkeley Arms, a thriving centre for the community In the centre of Tewkesbury near to the Cross, The Berkeley Arms is a traditional Wadsworths Brewery Pub, licensee Laurence Mills is passionate about its role in the community and is a supporter of many local causes. The Pub has a Medieval barn, tucked down the adjacent alleyway which has been a complimentary venue for many worthy groups, which include Tewkesbury Amateur Dramatic Society, Tewkesbury Pub Singers, and many local musicians. For fans of live music, the calendar for each month is crammed with bands and musicians making the pub a leading venue in the area. Laurence and partner Natalie are keen supporters of the Medieval Festival, Tewkesbury in Bloom and are enthusiastic about maintaining the community focus of their local Public House. Dining at the pub is also very popular, all the food is cooked from fresh, sourced from shops in the town, and the home made pies with pastry base and top have a huge fan base. Currently serving five real ales and a range of traditional draft ciders, Laurence hopes that you will pop in soon, and enjoy your trip to the Berkeley.

Local lad James Wallis Takes Scotlands Junior Nascar Like many young lads, James Wallis spends his weekends playing sports. However, his chosen sport is a little different, as it involves driving at high speed around an oval race track in a Junior Nascar. When we previously reported on James, he had just started his racing career - at the age of 9! Now in his third season at the age 12, he is starting to dominate his sport and last weekend he participated in the Scottish Championship at the Cowdenbeath Racewall circuit. He won all 6 races of the 2 day event and was crowned winner of the 2018 Scottish Championship. The race series is non contact and the car he was driving was as half size American Nascars, sitting 50mm off the ground and hitting speeds of 60 miles per hour. When he is not doing this, he also races Minis for fun! If you want to find out any more, you can follow James at www.jcwracing.co.uk.
MITTON W.I. At June's meeting we had a very interesting talk on the area of The Mythe by Don and Jo. We learnt that the Mythe 'Toot' had been a Roman station to enable them to keep an eye on The Silures, a band of people living in the areas towards the Malverns and Bredon Hill. King George III and his wife also visited The Mythe during their visits to Cheltenham and apparently took quite a liking to the area. Many thanks to Don an Jo for yet another enjoyable talk and for sharing their wonderful archive of Tewkesbury Photographs. July's meeting will be on 2nd July and will be a demonstration of flower arranging, so get your artistic heads on ladies. There will be no meeting in August, but we will be back in September with a talk by Charlotte Phillips entitled 'Plus Sized Model/Pageant Queen'. New members very welcome to come along and join us. Mitton W.I. meets every first Monday of each month at Mitton Manor Primary School at 7.30pm. If you would like more information please call 07846 453523 or email MittonWI@gmail.com. 26 - TEWKESBURY DIRECT

Local Conveyancer, Karen Dodd (pictured), explains how it may be possible to reduce the stress levels associated with moving house by following a few simple hints. Karen, who works for WLS Solicitors based in Malvern, explains that The Office for National Statistics confirmed that the busiest months for property transactions last year were June through to August with the market remaining busy right up to December. This year feels very similar with the year getting off to a slow start and there is no doubt that the snow and cold weather which lasted until March played a big part. However, the market is now very buoyant, and we are now busy with new instructions. With that in mind, I have listed the most common problems encountered when selling and buying property and have offered some hints and tips as to how they can be avoided or minimised. My experience tells me that the three most stress inducing stages are as follows: 1. Finding a suitable property to buy If you are looking to buy, it may take a while to find the right property for you and to find a buyer for your existing property. Using a local estate agent can be key here as they have lists of buyers who are waiting for the ‘right’ property to come onto the market. The local knowledge they have is invaluable as is the after sales support that agents can provide, particularly if you are in a chain. Often it is the agents who can nudge these chains along and I have found that the online agents just do not provide any after sales support, so I would always recom-
mend finding a local agent and working closely with them. 2. Getting a mortgage Have this agreed in principle before you make your offer on your new home. It is vital you know what your limit is and that you can afford your new home as it is easy to get carried away when viewing a property. Speaking with a good mortgage advisor is vital to ensuring the process runs smoothly and since lenders have tightened their lending criteria, it is vital your information is sent off to them in good time. Finding a good financial advisor is an excellent first step. 3. Delays When buying a property there are many other parties involved and it is easy for any blame to be thrown around at a time when what is actually really important is that all parties work together and share one common goal – to complete as soon as possible. There are inevitably hiccups in chains which cause delays and it is how these are dealt with
which is important. So find a conveyancer who you trust and can rely upon to work hard on your behalf. Everything I do is with my client’s best interests in mind. I have excellent working relationships with the local estate agents, financial advisors and other solicitors and I work hard to maintain those relationships. It is vitally important that every communication channel is kept open which ultimately benefits my clients and hopefully achieves their aim of completing on their sale or purchase as soon as possible and within their preferred timeframe. Karen finishes off by saying “I take great pride in my work and receiving referrals and recommendations from satisfied clients is testament to this”. If you would like to speak with Karen or a member of her team to discuss your property sale or purchase, please call her at WLS Solicitors on 01684 216777 at any time or alternatively email email@example.com.

Tewkesbury prostate cancer blood test success DJ’S PRIVATE HIRE The free public blood testing session featured in our May edition and held with kind permission at Tewkesbury School on £0 May was a huge success. It was organised by the Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group charity, with the help of volunteers from the Cheltenham branch of Lions International. “Our fantastic team of phlebotomists worked flat out and non-stop to blood test close to 500 men in just two and a half hours,” says John Copsey, chairman of the Cotswolds group. “Most were from the Tewkesbury area, but a few came from a bit further afield like Gloucester and Cheltenham, and even one man from Sheffield and another from South Devon!” “We'd invited men aged between 50 and 75 (or over 40 if they'd had a close relative diagnosed with prostate cancer), to ask their GP for a test, or to come along to our free event. The response was fantastic”,
added John, “which shows that more men are thinking seriously about prostate health, which is what we want”. Whilst the PSA test (which checks the level of Prostate Specific Antigen in the blood) is not a cancer diagnosis, it's a valuable tool in helping clinicians decide whether further investigation is necessary. Of the men tested last Wednesday, it's known that 48 had raised PSA levels, of whom 25 were seriously high. Each will be receiving a confidential letter within the next few days advising what further action is needed. “Following our experience of similar previous events, we reckon
that whilst the vast majority of men are fine”, says John Copsey, “a few will need treatment that may save their lives”. The Cotswolds Prostate Cancer Support Group is delighted to have made good progress in the Tewkesbury area towards promoting better awareness of prostate cancer, which affects one in eight men, and kills more than 10,000 in the UK every year. In particular, they’d like it better known that in its early stages, when it’s most treatable, prostate cancer often has no symptoms. The group’s other main activity is to support Gloucestershire men
diagnosed with the disease, and their families too. “We have a meeting on the second Monday of each month at the excellent Maggie’s Centre, close to Cheltenham Hospital, and a separate informal pub get-together for Prostate Cancer Partners on the Wednesday of the following week.” says John Copsey. The next meeting at Maggie’s will be on 11 June, and the Partners’ meeting will be at the Table Table restaurant, The Oakwood, Twigworth, Gloucester on 20 June. WHAT MADE THE SMART CLOCK TICK? Pictured here is the movement (the clock work) that drove the “Smart” clock which has hung from No1 High St since 1883. The original clock was presented to the town by the Mayor M.C. Smart. It was supplied by William Henry Spurrier, watch maker and jeweller of 7 High St. Although his name can be seen on the small dial on the rear of the mechanism, he probably bought the clock from a larger manufacturer. Technically, the timepiece is a cast iron Aframed turret clock. It was mounted in the
joists of first floor room. A drive shaft passed through the wall on to the two faced dial in a
casing which still hangs on an ornate bracket, facing up and down the street. It may be ornate,

again in the morning. By the 1990s the clock stopped working. In 2003, after a thorough survey, the Town Council decided to replace the mechanical movement with an electrical drive system, at the cost of £1850 pounds. The council decided to keep the original dials and casing – except for the gas lamp – so that the clock looks, from the outside, just as it did 135 years ago, though the casing is looking a little worn. The mechanism is on temporary display in the museum window, as part of a project to show more of the museum’s collec-
but the location was criticised in the local press as the dials couldn’t be seen from much of Barton St and Church St. That may seem odd to us when every device seems to tell the time, but public clocks were vital to the running of transport and commerce in an age when watches and private clocks were still rare and expensive. Unlike many public clocks it did not have a chime. The clock was powered by a weight on a chain, which descended down to the ground floor. It had to be wound every 7 days using a large crank handle. Winding and setting the clock was the responsibility of the tenants of the flat above the shop. It is likely that the accuracy of the clock varied with the reliability of the tenants! The dials were originally illuminated by a gas lamp between the faces. The lamp was permanently lit, but the clock activated a valve which turned the flame up at night, and down

RAMBLING AROUND with Jack B. Walker
IN TIMELESS GRAFTON Grafton is the kind of place that even the backroad passes by, writes Jack B. Walker. A rural, farming community little changed in over 100 years, it is probably the least visited of all the Bredon Hill villages - but one worth seeking out. It is best accessed on foot from neighbouring Ashton-under-Hill.
Rural idyll: Grafton
SUMMER CYCLING EVERYTHING YOU NEED RIGHT HERE IN TEWKESBURY! Wide range of cycles, accessories, tyres, gear and spares Cycle servicing CAR and repairs
CARE Parts, filters, wiper blades, bulbs, plugs cleaners
Park your car with care on Ashton village street near St Barbara’s Parish Church. Walk through the churchyard (1) and as you enter a field bear diagonally right up the slope towards a hollow tree. Go over the stile to reach a lane, and turn left along it (2). After a short distance you will reach the small hamlet of Paris. Look for a house called Bredon Springs on your left: this was once the home of a botanist who discovered that many unusual plants would grow in his garden due to the warm water springs here. Walk on through Paris and follow the lane down the slope. Just after passing a house with tennis courts at the bottom of its garden, bear right along the edge of a field (3). You will eventually emerge into an open field: carry on straight along the edge to cross a footbridge over a stream
(4) which, incidentally, forms the boundary between the GL20 and WR11 postcode areas. Walk over the field towards some cottages and go through the farm gate next to them on to a road (5). You have now reached Grafton. Walk ahead past Manor Farm and turn right into the village street. Look our for a small stone thatched building on your left called Norman Cottage; centuries ago this was a chapel of ease for the monastery at Beckford. Walk to the end of the lane, which descends to a farm gate (7). Bear left and walk downhill, passing some cottages and farm buildings. When you reach the road again (8), turn left and retrace your steps to point 3. From point 3, follow the waymarkers through a farm gate and diagonally across the field. Bear left at the fence and along the edge to return to the church.

DEERHURST FLOWER FESTIVAL The villagers of Deerhurst and Apperley warmly invite you to our biennial flower festival, which takes place over the August Bank Holiday, from 2527th inclusive from 10am until 5.30pm. This spectacular event is organised in one of England's oldest and most delightful Saxon churches, The Priory Church of St. Mary, nestling by the river Severn in the village of Deerhurst. The historic church will be transformed into a fragrant and colourful art gallery bedecked with vibrant floral displays depicting the theme for 2018, “A Moment in Time.” In addition, to make a day out of it, refreshments are served all day on the Priory Lawns along with a selection of craft stalls, local entertainment, BBQ and bar. Nearby, in Odda's Chapel local artists will be exhibiting their works, and the Church Tower will be open each afternoon for anyone to try their hand at bell ringing. This event brings the villagers of Apperley and Deerhurst together and provides essential funding for the upkeep of the churches. Please come and support us whilst enjoying a fun day out. Heart of England In Bloom Tuesday 10th July is the morning of the Heart of England in Bloom competition. Tewkesbury has entered the town category, and it will be In Bloom judge Roger Bache who will be deciding if volunteers have put in enough effort this year to receive an award. The judging tour will last two and half hours, and the town will be assessed on horticultural excellence, environmental practices and community involvement and will be scored out of a possible 100 marks. The tour is due to start at Marina Court where the residents have created a stunning sensory garden in the grounds of the complex, and Roger will also view the flowerbeds at Victoria Gardens, the Abbey grounds, the Village Green, the Little Garden by the Lock, the Back of Avon, the high street, Priors Park edible gardens/allotment and the work being undertaken at Tewkesbury's Nature Reserve. For those places he will not be able to reach within the judging slot, the volunteers will be showing Roger a DVD presentation including drone footage of the town as well as preparing a portfolio document. The highlight of the judging tour will be musical entertainment provided by the Heart
and Soul community choir at Victoria Gardens. The public are warmly invited to enjoy the outdoor performance which includes uplifting songs starting at approximately 11 am.
You may wish to bring a portable chair/picnic mat and picnic too (weather permitting). The National Competition judging date is 1 August.

Actor Robert Hardy Remembered Organisers of the annual Tewkesbury Medieval Festival last week paid fitting tribute to their late patron - the actor Robert Hardy - who died earlier this year. They have planted a Yew Tree overlooking part of the site of the original Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471. Archers and other reenactors all dressed in authentic medieval costumes gathered around as his daughter, Justine, who had flown in specially for the eventplanted the tree and talked about her father’s life long love of history, before - watering it with a generous libation of his favourite tipple -

A yew tree was chosen as his memorial, because it is the best wood available for making long bows, something for which he had a real passion. The well know actor is remembered by older people as the vet Sigfried Farnon in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small, and by youngsters as Professor Cornelious Fudge, from the Harry Potter series. He first became involved with the Tewkesbury Medieval
Festival in 1997 when the organisers asked for his support in their campaign to stop The Gastons, a large part of the original battle site being developed for housing. Since then, opening it each year with a stirring speech, usually Shakespearian, surrounded by armed knights, he also enjoyed joining the group on trips to places of historical interest, most noticeably, The Mary Rose. The founder of Tewkesbury Medieval Festival, Peggy Clatworthy said, “He was a great history enthusiast and a won-

Summer in the Repair Café
ONLY WITH THIS VOUCHER
Summer has arrived at last, and at Tewkesbury Repair Café’s June meeting there were plenty of garden tools to sharpen and repair; shears, secateurs. And a very well used hoe with a handle riddled with woodworm, leaving more holes than wood. A replacement “ ‘andle for an ‘oe” as the Two Ronnies might have said, and the tool was good for another few years. Also welcoming summer were Justyna and Oliver, pictured here. Justyna was looking forward to a spin on her mountain bike, but unfortunately the rear tyre had a flat, which she was unsure about repairing herself in case she had to remove the chain from the derailleur gear. Cliff and “new volunteer” Robert soon fixed the puncture then checked and adjusted the brakes too. Enjoy the ride Justyna. Actually, Robert wasn’t really a new volunteer, he just popped in to have a look round, but got involved. That’s the magic of Repair Café’s, getting people involved. Not only in the actual fixing, but administra-
tion, greeting, cakemaking and all the roles that make it a success. If you’d like to know what goes on, maybe get involved, pop in or contact us via Facebook or www.tewkesburyrepaircafe.co.uk. Please note: The Repair Café session planned for 14 July has been cancelled. Our catering team from Friends of the Earth will be at Medfest selling their delicious organic products, and it is the start of the school holidays, leaving us short of both cake and volunteers. Sorry for any inconvenience. The next Café will be on Saturday 25th August at the Baptist Church hall, 3 to 6 PM.

SPONSORS CONFIRMED FOR BESTSELLING PANTOMIME IN THE ROSES’ HISTORY The Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury, is delighted to announce that local family owned estate agents Peter Ball & Co have, for the fifth consecutive year, renewed their sponsorship of its annual pantomime, Dick Whittington. Following the success of last year’s pantomime, Sleeping Beauty, which broke Box Office records, The Roses is confident that the continuation of the partnership with Peter Ball & Co will help this year’s production do the same and early sales would indicate that the theatre is well on track to smash its record once again, with a staggering 35% more tickets already sold than at this point last year! The Roses’ traditional family pantomime has become an institution and for many families provides one of the highlights of their festivities over the Christmas period. This year audiences will be treated to a spectacular performance of Dick Whittington, which sees the plucky title character set off on a daring mission across the seas with an eclectic band of companions. Filled with music and laughter throughout, there is no better antidote to the pressures
that the season can often bring than two hours of pure unadulterated escapism! Peter Ball & Co have been operating as one of Gloucestershire’s leading independent estate agents since 1993, providing a tailored service to the individual needs of its community. Over the previous four years they have helped The Roses to put on a memorable experience for all to enjoy and with the announcement of their support for a fifth successive year it is anticipated that 2018 will be the best pantomime yet. Caroline Lawrence, of The Roses, said: “We’re thrilled to have Peter Ball & Co on board again - not only do we enormously value their support but we always have enormous fun working together - and that’s really at the heart of what pantomime is all about!” Linda Ball, of Peter Ball & Co, said: “We're delighted to be sponsoring this year's pan-
tomime at The Roses (oh yes we are!). As a family-run business ourselves we know that Christmas is all about bringing families together so it's great to be able to say, 'We're behind you!'” The Roses is also delighted to announce a brand new partnership with two local dance schools, Amy Flynn School of Dance and Studio B, who will perform on alternative days throughout Dick Whittington’s 5 week run. It has long been an ambition of the theatre’s to forge such a valuable working relationship and over recent years The Roses has worked hard to forge links with local dance schools in the area in the hope that as well as performing throughout the year in their own showcases, they will also become a more intrinsic part of The Roses going forward. The benefits of such a partnership are enor-
mous. By forming teams early on in the autumn, the two dance teams can enjoy a lengthy rehearsal process and get to know each other inside out, making not only for a more polished and confident performance come opening night, but also a more enjoyable and rewarding one as a result. Geoffrey Rowe, of The Roses, said: “Theatres around the country normally draw their pantomime young performers from their local dance schools. It means that they benefit from the school’s expertise and experience; the children can rehearse through the autumn and you tend to attract local children, which is surely in the spirit of a "local" pantomime” Tickets for Dick Whittington, which runs from Saturday 1 December to Saturday 5 January, are available online at www.rosestheatre.org or via The Roses’ Box Office on 01684 295074.

Sensational Shad Session! Five members of Tewkesbury Friends of the Earth accompanied volunteer Helen Carver to the Upper Lode Weir on the River Severn on 17th May in hope of seeing some Twaite Shad migrate upstream to spawn via the fish pass. The spring high tide was due between 12 and 1pm and the extra volume of water would bring the Shad upstream more readily. The group gathered on the river bank hoping to see a few Shad and Helen reported that during her surveys she usually sees between two and nine fish in around thirty minutes. First a Lamprey was observed - a fish which had latched itself onto the fish pass marker board using its mouth suction. Considering the force of water, it was amazing that it was able to maintain its position. Lamprey have the rather unpleasant habit of latching onto fish and sucking their blood! Then the Shad began to arrive; at first on their own, then in groups. Helen was only just able to keep count and was very glad of help as the failed attempts to swim up the pass also need to be recorded. In an hour and a quarter, a whopping 292 Shad were noted successfully swimming upstream, along with sixty-five
failed attempts. This was far beyond all expectation and a wonderful phenomenon to witness. On May 23rd, Helen arrived at midday to survey the Shad again and was surprised to find a team of thirteen gathered on the river bank, some wearing wetsuits. A fish trap had been erected just above the pass by the Environment Agency, who in conjunction with Hull University were conducting Twaite Shad tagging in association with the survey: Unlocking the Severn Project www.severnriverstrust.com Helen was fascinated to
observe the team swiftly net the fish, weigh and then tag them with microchips and radio transmitters before returning them to the river. This technology will gather information as they progress to their spawning area and will be used to aid the fortunes of this endangered fish. by Cate Cody.

Contact the Elderly, Tewkesbury Launches! They have little or no contact with either family or friends, and their numbers are rising. In our rapidly ageing population it is predicted that 2.2 million over 65s will be isolated by 2021. Contact the Elderly is working to change this. On July 8th, 3 Tewkesbury ladies are launching the Tewkesbury group. “We will help isolated elderly people, by replicating, as near as possible, the hospitality they would receive if they had friends or family nearby” said Charlotte. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is
replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly tea parties are a real lifeline of friendship for our

and quality of life. These friendship groups are particularly relevant as social isolation can be such a risk factor for depression. Contact the Elderly has been a real lifeline for some people I have worked with.” Michelle Hamill, Clinical Psychologist The groups operate at weekends, when most community services for older people are not available. Moreover, Sunday has been highlighted to us by our older guests as being a particularly lonely day of the week. The groups are kept purposely small, and they meet in the welcoming environment of someone’s home. If you are interested in joining a group, or

Ups and Downs in the Alleys Project Alleycat has two pieces of news this month, one good, one disappointing. The good news is that we have funding available to complete the Tolsey Lane mural “Through the Windows”. The first section of this work covers three long-boarded up windows in Cross House, one of Tewkesbury’s oldest and grandest half-timbered buildings. There are another seven panels remaining. Local artist Maxine Williams’ painting of the kitchen in the 15th century, has really livened up the Lane – one of the main routes between the High St. and the riverside. A straw poll of around 300 people on Facebook recorded 95% of people in favour of completing the work. Alleycat has now commissioned Max to paint the remaining window and door panels. She hasn’t decided yet exactly what the mural will depict, just that it will relate to the existing painting and the history of the building. Max lives in Prior’s Park but much of her work is in Hereford, including murals for schools, hospitals and
the WW1 commemoration. The disappointment is that the scheme to turn Bank Alley into an “interpretation centre” for alley history will not go ahead in the near future. Bank Alley - the remains of one of Tewkesbury’s more notorious lanes - runs though the Out of the Hat Tourist Information Centre. It is not used and is not accessible to the public. In an innovative, possibly unique, scheme Alleycat wanted to equip it with touch screen display panels which would tell the story of the rise and fall of Bank Alley, and Tewkesbury alleys in general, providing an additional string to Tewkesbury’s tourist bow. The Project was in the process of applying for a European grant, when the scheme had to be curtailed as Alleycat were unable to get permission to use the alley from its owner, Tewkesbury Borough Council. In an email, the council stated that it was “looking at its assets so it would be inappropriate to commit at this stage.
However, in principle, we are still supportive”. Speaking for Alleycat, Bill Adie said that he was “disappointed” that TBC were unable to support the scheme as things stand. “We would like to reconsider the
scheme – or something similar - in the future”. But “Alleycat had other irons in the fire, and were determined that the historic alleys would not be neglected when telling Tewkesbury’s story”.

PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham
ELECTRONIC PRESCRIPTIONS AND NOMINATIONS Some of our patients are concerned because although they have nominated our pharmacy in Priors Park as their chosen pharmacy, prescriptions are being redirected to other pharmacy providers in Tewkesbury, without their consent, writes Peter Badham. The situation is very clear, that the prescription or token is the property of the patient, and no one has the right to interfere with what the patient wants. With the new electronic prescription serv-
ice, the patient has to nominate one pharmacy to dispense their medication. I have already reported incidents where patients tokens are being sent to the wrong pharmacy because some-
one has overridden their nomination to NHS Digital and will be happy to add further examples of patients who are being mistreated in this way.

OUR ALLEYWAYS by Steve Goodchild
A TALE OF TWO COURTS Giles Geast was a mercer, living in Tewkesbury in the sixteenth century. He seems to have profited hugely from the sale of monastery property at the dissolution, and had a social conscience. He left twenty two houses in trust for the benefit of the poor of Tewkesbury. This Trust is known as the Geast Charity. Its records were meticulously kept until it merged with other town charities in the nineteenth century. Three of these houses were in the alley which is now known as Wakeley’s Court, which is at the northern end of the Mill Bank. The Charity accounts give us an almost continuous record of the tenants and their rent from 1564, when William Moore, Edward Tayler and James Carre were paying 4 shillings each per annum for what were described as a ‘tenement or stable and garden’. The alley was then called ‘Waite Lane’. For a reason which is unexplained, its name changed to Car’s Lane in 1716, at a time when Samuel Merrell held the tenancy of all three properties, for a rent of thirty shillings per annum. The last record is for 1807, when Ann Stone was paying fifty two shillings, Thomas Allad thirty shillings and Thomas Literidge thirty seven and six. Rent was very variable, and there’s evidence that it was sometimes set according to ability to pay. The three tenements have, over the passage of time, been combined into one property. When and why the Wakeley name appeared isn’t clear. It is likely to be a family name from the middle of the nine-
teenth century. Nowadays, the name has dropped out of use; the houses are officially an extension of Mill Bank. The court terminates at the old Stonemason’s yard, where there is still a right of access, but only when the lower end of the court is flooded. It has been suggested that at one time the court joined Chandler’s Court, off the High Street, to form an alley. If this was so, then there must have been some subsequent realignment of plot boundaries, because the two don’t line up, and didn’t on the earliest OS maps. The burgage plots on Church Street did not extend to Mill Bank. Whilst there may once have been a passage, an alley of the old Tewkesbury style seems unlikely. Chandler’s Court was not a busy place. There were only two cottages; the court being dominated by a malthouse. Daniel Chandler, who lived in the ‘front house’ and gave the court its name, was a maltster and corn merchant. He was best known, though, as a long-serving collector of the poor rates, which was probably as popular as a traffic warden today, and a Guardian of the Poor. He was first elected in 1846.
Chandlers Court When he died in 1905, he was the town’s second oldest resident, at 91 years (exceeded only by John Rogers, whose notes on Tewkesbury’s alleys are so useful today. He was 97 at the time). The notice of his funeral claims for him the distinction of being the last person to be buried in the Abbey churchyard. Today, Walkeley’s and Chandler’s courts are quiet private areas which cannot be explored. Their
entrances, though are attractive, and ancient, features of the streetscape. Wakeleys Court

POSITIVE THINKING with David Slater
New property services business
KNOWING THE NEED Many people in our busy world feel lonely, writes David Slater. You can be lonely in a crowd! So often people feel that they have so much to do in their own lives that they don't spare even a thought for how others may feel. They may not even consider that such a thing as loneliness exists when their own lives are full of action and people. A smile, a wave, a cheery “Good Morning” costs nothing and takes up little time and may help someone feel less lonely feel wanted and valued. These days there are a lot of lonely people around. You see them daily but fail to give that wave. Too often we can feel alone. But, at times of major need, there is so often someone ready to take our hand when they see we need it. There is a beautiful story of an overworked nurse who took a tired, young man to her
patient's bedside in the busy hospital. Leaning over and speaking loudly to the elderly patient, she said, “Your son is here.” With great effort, his unfocussed eyes opened, then flicked shut again. The young man squeezed the aged hand in his and sat beside the bed. Throughout the night he sat there, holding the old man's hand and whispering words of comfort. The old man was calm and still. Perhaps there was even a flicker of a smile upon his wrinkled face. When the sun rose in the morning and the nurse came to see how things were she saw that the old man, the patient, had died. In moments, hospital staff came into the room to turn off machines and remove needles. The nurse stepped over to the young man's side and began to offer sym-
pathy, but he interrupted her. “Who was that man?” he asked. The startled nurse replied, “I thought he was your father!” “No, he was not my father,” he answered. I never saw him before in my life.” “Then, why didn't you say something when I took you to him?” “I realised he needed his son and his son wasn't here,” the man explained. “And since he was too sick to recognise that I was not his son, I knew he needed me.” We are made to travel life's journey hand in hand. There is someone who could be ready to grasp your hand today. And someone hoping you will take theirs. There are loads of good people in the world. IF YOU DONT KNOW ONE JUST BE ONE. BE THAT ONE!

After nearly ten years gaining experience the kitchen design and fitting trade, local carpenter Michael Emms has started his own business. “I am a qualified joiner/carpenter and have done all sorts of work ranging from kitchen fitting, hanging doors, replacing existing kitchen doors and worktops, flooring, general carpentry and joinery,” said Mike. “I’ve even worked for celebrity clients, installing kitchens from £2,000 up to £75,000 in value.” Mike takes a lot of pride in his work, and has established up a Facebook page for ME Property Services (facebook.com/mepropertyservices) where examples of his work can be viewed. On 12th and 13th May a group from Bod’s Custom Cycles of Tewkesbury travelled to Pendine Sands in South Wales with a special build Herald 250cc, to attempt to set a land speed record.
“With the help from Herald Motor Company & Valespeed Motorcycles in Evesham we built a completely custom framed bike around a Herald 250cc engine,” said Bod's Simon Boden. “Our sole intention of going to Pendine Sands was to get a land speed record, and after two days racing down the beach we came achieved just that, recording
