TOWN SPRINGS FORWARD

Tewkesbury's choice of restaurants, diners and cafés is expanding, as the town continues to grow in population and commerce.

A brand new diner, The Longhorn Bar and Grill is due to open in the early Spring. The purpose-built restaurant is located at Teddington Hands, and will predominantly be serving an extensive grilled steak menu.

On the menu, owners

Will and Deb Gilder will have mainly home reared meat from their own herd of native breed cattle, including Longhorn and Herefords.

The beef is known for its flavour, and the cattle have all been healthily raised with care, grazing on good pasture grass.

16 year-old opens first shop in Tewkesbury

Finley Hutchings, founder of Hutchings Country Clothing, opens his first shop in Tewkesbury High Street on Wednesday 1st February.

Sixteen year-old Finley (pictured) started trading last November, selling quality outdoor clothing at sensible prices. The shop is a natural addition to his online business.

With his love of the unusual and the practical, Finley will also be selling ‘man cave’ items, antiques, tools, garden machinery and other treasures too.

Hutchings Emporium is at 48 High Street, Tewkesbury. See advert on page 20 for more details.

Watch out for opening details soon!

Before long, events and local attractions will be open up again.

On Saturday 4th March, heritage train services resume on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway.

The volunteer-runorganisation is also looking forward to its popular Cotswold Festival of Steam. See page 18 for more details.

Looking further ahead, the Tewkesbury Appfest music festival has been confirmed for 27th - 30th July. Four days of top acts and world class tribute bands performing for the ideal summer staycation at Hillworth Farm, near Longdon.

Oh William!

Elizabeth Strout is a very talented writer, who can seemingly say, in less than 240 pages, what some writers might take twice as long to recount. Once again the author is entertaining us with a further segment of the life of Lucy Barton and of her exhusband William.

This, Lucy's third outing is very much focused on William, their life when together, their two daughters, who feature regularly, and their relationship after divorce. How he, in later life, with another marriage floundering discovers that he has a sister, Lois, apparently left behind by his mother when she ran off to join William's father an exGerman P.o.W. We learn a lot about William's early life, and of Catherine's, his mother and her background, and why she abandoned her first family.

The fulcrum of the story is William's journey back to his mother's home town to trace his halfsister, and the author's descriptions of the local folk, and surroundings in rural Maine are very telling. Lucy recently widowed, grieving and lonely, agrees to help William, and accompanies him on his journey.

The trip is described in detail not only the Maine locality but their

relationship, hence the subtlety of the title.

There is no need to have read "My name is Lucy Barton" or "Anything is Possible" to enjoy this book, but if you decide to read this uninitiated without the pleasures of the two earlier outings of Lucy, I reckon you will be wanting to acquire them and catch up on the rest of her life story. One of my books of 2021.

There is now a further outing for this couple in "Lucy by the Sea", published last Autumn and only available in hardback at the moment, but you need to read "Oh William!" first, This fourth outing for Lucy is very much a novel set during the pandemic, but far from a depressing one. Worth looking out for later in the year when in softback.

Bookworm gives back and expands online

Did you know the secondhand books handed in to Bookworm Bookshop are helping the local community? The profits from the sale of these donated books are regularly distributed to local good causes by the volunteers who help to run the shop which is located in Tewkesbury High Street. In the latest round of profit distribution

£1,000 has been allocated to two key 2023 town events, one being Tewkesbury Medieval Festival and the other Tewkesbury Christmas Lights.

Vulnerable local people can benefit all year round from Tewkes-bury’s Wheelchair Bus service driven by volunteers and £1,000 will help towards increased insurance costs.

Another cheque for £1,000 has been sent to Hope for Tomorrow: this charity provides cancer treatment in a mobile unit which visits Tewkesbury Hospital weekly, meaning that suitable patients do not have to face a tiring journey to Cheltenham for treatment.

Finally adult and younger musicians with Tewkesbury Town Band will be receiving £500 to top up the band’s funds, anyone wanting to learn to play an instrument can join free of charge.

If you’ve not visited Bookworm before, you’ll find thousands of books packed in to a quirky building, near The Cross. It spans two floors and is staffed by friendly volunteers.

books that are difficult to find appropriate shelf space for or require need special care are now sold online at Abe Books.

Versatile Arts and Mu Mu Audio are proud to present Eliza Carthy

To mark this significant milestone, she will be releasing a new album Queen Of The Whirl with her band The Restitution – featuring re-recordings of some of her ‘greatest hits’ and audience-favourites from past 30 years, including songs from her three Mercury Award nominated albums.

Eliza turned pro (or quit college, depending on if you ask her or her dear departed mam) in 1992, and since then has toured all over the world; danced with Hugh Masekele in Ghana; crossed the Prairies, the Alps, and the waters of Lake Titicaca, all for the sake of playing the fiddle and spreading the word of English traditional music.

Queen Of The Whirl is her celebration of thirty years of silliness and profundity, with a crack team of musicians made up of her colleagues and counterparts. Thirty years of music re-imagined, from Billy Bragg to Peggy Seeger, from The Ratcatchers to Imagined Village, from

bloody boots in Trafalgar Square to the moors of North Yorkshire, and everywhere in between.

It’s been quite a ride!

Eliza’s performances are selling out across the Country. She last played in the Area over

a year ago with a sell out performance at Hellens Manor. Doors open at 7.30 with the band taking to the stage at 8.00pm.

Tewkesbury - Supporting Ukraine

A big thank you to the people of Tewkesbury who have donated clothing, medical supplies, blankets and more recently cash contributions to buy over 40 petrol and diesel generators so far for the beleaguered civilians of Ukraine, writes Tim Wright.

Especial thanks to Orange Pig and Courtney Travel for collecting many of the donations. We still need as much as we can muster. This Russian “Special Operation” is causing havoc and pain for most Ukrainians who have no option but to sit it out in

their bleak winters most without power and light. Some of the larger generators are going to Help schools and hospitals and all offer a semblance of normality and, just as important, the feeling that we democracies really care. If you would like to

FIDDLE FEAST IS BACK

Described by BBC Radio 2’s Mark Radcliffe as “Britain’s fiddling supergroup,” the show returns to Tewkesbury’s Roses Theatre on Tuesday 28th March (doors open 7.30pm).

Born in Nettled. Oxfordshire, on St Valentine’s Day 1994 as a one-off special concert, Feast of Fiddles has done 27 spring tours, 25 festivals and has seven CDs to its name.

Not bad for a bunch of old folk-rockers! This is a band of friends that puts on a show of huge

dynamic range performed with passion, joy and a liberal dose of fun.

Chris Leslie is taking time out in 2023 to get back to fiddle making so following her debut in 2022 as a full member of the band Marion Fleetwood has now become permanent.

She joins fiddlers Peter Knight (Steeleye Span and Gigspanner), Brian McNeill (Battlefield Band), Ian Cutler (Bully Wee), Tom Leary (Joe Brown) and Garry Blakeley (Band of Two) who add the large range

of fiddle playing styles to the rock back-line of guitars, keyboards, sax and accordion – all held together by legendary drummer Dave Mattacks.

The show is a live music entertainment like no other on the circuit which is guaranteed to be enjoyed by even the most doubting of friends dragged along. Tickets for the Tewkesbury Show are available from the Roses Theatre Box Office 01684 295074 or via www.rosestheatre.org

Sinister goings-on at Probus Club?

Over the last few weeks members of Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have been entertained, educated

and enthralled at the subjects covered by the wide variety of speakers we have had at our regular Tuesday morn-

ing meetings.

Peter Petrie from Cheltenham provided us with a subject which many left-handed members

have been badgering me to find. Peter’s subject was “It’s a sinister world” which on the face of it suggested a talk

about creepy, ominous and disturbing evil spirits but it was nothing of the sort. The word sinister has evolved from the Latin for left and this was an eye-opening exploration of left-handedness. We learnt how many famous and infamous people past and present were left-handed and how many religious and historical artefacts display left handedness to be somewhat second rate, looked down upon and possibly …sinister.

As we approached the Christmas break, Philip Collins from Cheltenham took us on a hilarious journey through the history of Punch and Judy from its origins in medieval Italy, how it came to England over 350 years ago, to the seaside performances which many of us remember from our childhood. This was more than a talk – it was a proper Punch and Judy show full of fun and audience participation with Mr Punch and his long-suffering wife doing what they have always done – entertaining the kids!

For our first talk in the New Year, we welcomed Mike Warburton the well-known and distinguished tax and finan-

cial expert who regularly comments on radio, TV and in national newspapers on all things financial.

His subject was “The MP’s expenses scandal” and other skulduggery in high places. This was a fascinating and entertaining talk containing many examples from Mike’s vast experience about what goes on in political circles and how and why governments and political parties often make statements without any supporting evidence and promises they have no chance of fulfilling.

If you are a retired professional or businessman looking for something new to stimulate your retirement in a social environment, you would be very welcome to join us as a guest at one of our Tuesday morning meetings.

At the end of last summer, we experienced a false autumn? Leaves changed colour and fell and fruits ripened early, writes Tim Hoskins.

It was actually reaction to stress that caused it and autumn continued as normal at about the

FALSE PROMISES

right time, although it was warm.

Fast forward to now and we have already seen signs of a false spring. This is different to the false autumn,

because most plants are dormant and not necessarily subject to winter stress. False springs are where temperatures rise, then fall again causing plants to wake from dor-

mancy and emerge or break bud.

I often get asked if it’s a problem but, truthfully, I’ve never experienced any significant issues with early emergence.

A false spring is bound to have some unseen effect as plants use reserves of energy earlier than would be normal – and it certainly has an effect on animals – but most plants seem to adjust and grow without bother.

winter, a scorching spring then that summer. Some species show signs of stress well after the event (e.g. Taxus showing bronzing) and some species even wait until the following year before they have their little moan (e.g. Fagus).

So far, however, we’ve actually had a fairly gentle winter because despite the freezing temperatures we had in December, things were covered by a protective layer of snow.

The point I’m making is that while a false spring is not generally an issue, after a difficult 2021/2022, I can’t confidently say that that will be the case.

I’m keeping everything crossed for a boring year!

The definite exceptions are plants with tender buds. Fruit trees, namely Prunus are worst affected but we all know that late frosts are likely to be a menace to these species anyway. I always cover my peaches with netting in the autumn to protect them from any frost in the following spring and it wouldn’t do any harm to try to protect other fruiting Prunus like cherries or plums if the trees are small or formally trained like espaliers.

It's worth remembering that last year was tough.

We had a very wet

Since 1996 No. 8 High Street has been incorporated by the Halifax with no 9 – and recently they were sold together at auction, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.

It is a pity that, since until then, the building had a distinctive life of its own as is demonstrated in the (sadly undated) water colour.

From 1868-1903, it had been the property of a Quaker Bookseller and Printer, Henry Browett after which until 1967, it was owned by Charles Roberts who ran the newspaper, Tewkesbury Register, from there. It then had several owners including Hickman’s from 1988-1893 - at least it brought some colour back to it. There was also a pedestrian crossing outside for some years and a policeman stood on it every Saturday to control the flow of traffic- so many heavy vehicles passing through by the late 60s

Not only that, but upstairs for many years was a Ladies’ Hairdresser - what would modern ladies give for a 1937 perm? Post war it was operated by Mrs. Marie Freeman. A former apprentice has “so many happy memories of my time there” between 19681971. Downstairs was a Lynn Brown’s Ladies Fashion Shop - she came upstairs most days to have her hair 'dressed' but she moved away. There seemed to be several businesses working there – in 1892 there was a dentist and in c1968 there was a workshop on the ground floor at the very back of the property, accessed from the High Street. Who worked there?

I hope the new owner soon reveals plans for 8-9 High Street, and hope that both will be granted a future in keeping with their more distant histories.

Park in the centre of the old village, in Church Piece Car Park, behind the modern shopping precinct near St Mary’s church. Walk past the library to reach Church Street, and turn right (1) Continue along Church Street into East End Road, passing first the Junior School and then Balcarras Road and the secondary school. Wager’s Court, an ancient house, is at the junction here. Behind the wall on the left of the road is East Court. Pass Peel Close (formerly the Police houses) and look for an alley way to your left (2). Turn into this and walk along it to reach London Road (the A40). Cross with care and turn right. After the entrance to Chase Avenue turn left (3) and descend along a path to reach a bridge over the River Chelt. Cross into a field and take the left of three waymarked paths.

you meet a lane (4). Follow this lane to meet Ham Road, and turn right to reach the little hamlet. Take the turning into Ham Square (5) and then the path across the field to the right of the cottages.

Turn right when you reach the lane, then right again and the triangle of grass (6) to double back to where you entered Ham. Bear right along Ryeworth Road (7) and eventually turn into Sandhurst Road (8) and follow it down to London Road.

Again, cross with care, turn right and then left into School Road (9) which brings you to the delightful little spot of Spring Bottom with its ford. Cross the bridge and bear left (X): note the ancient timbered Kings House up to your right.

Kings House BACK TO MY ROUTES!
Please forgive me, but this month’s walk is a little self-indulgent, writes Jack B. Walker. I reach a significant birthday in February, and over the past year I have been re-visiting some of the routes that I have enjoyed over the years. This little walk was a Sunday family favourite in the 1960s and 70s; it’s easy going, mostly on lanes and paths around Charlton Kings. WHY NOT HIRE OUR

FoE have the opportunity to borrow a Thermal Imaging Camera from Transition Cleeve. It’s an electronic device that can identify regions of wasted energy, eg potential thermal insulation gaps in your home. A major issue in Britain is the lack of or inadequate insulation; a third of heat can escape through the walls of our houses. With good insulation, you can lower your heating bills, reduce your impact on the planet and heat your home for less. Tewkesbury FoE intend to contact Age Concern UK to utilise this device in homes in Tewkesbury and this is our group's contribution to the Friends of the Earth national Warm Homes campaign.

We have lots going on at the reserve in February. This includes the start of our wildlife mural graffiti project which will involve us working with local schools to create a mural celebrating the wildlife at the reserve on the subway underneath the bypass. JOINT PAIN? OSTEOPATH

JOINT PAIN? OSTEOPATH

Shingles is a condition caused by the Herpes Zoster virus. This virus also causes chicken pox. If you have had chicken pox then the virus remains in a dormant state and lives in the dorsal root ganglion in your spine.

The dorsal root ganglion is a bundle of nerve cells which are present at the exit of a nerve from the spine. For the most part, the virus will never cause an issue again and the body’s built up immune system from the initial chicken pox will maintain health.

Occasionally, if your immune system is compromised, then the virus can rear its head. It travels along the nerve

root and will appear as small blisters, the same as chicken pox, in the distribution of the nerve. This is known as shingles. The pattern and distribution of nerves is mapped and know as the Dermatome map. Shingles is commonly one sided (unilateral) and follows a distinctive path.

The blisters can be very uncomfortable and sensitive. A bit like very bad sunburn. Keeping the blisters covered can help stop them rubbing on clothing etc.

Most people are concerned about catching shingles. You cannot catch shingles. You only have the possibility of getting shingles if you

have previously had chicken pox and you have a low immune system. The fluid in the blisters produced by shingles does have a small amount of active virus in it. If you keep these covered then it is not an issue. If these are in an area where you are unable to cover them, then you must wait until these have dried and scabbed over. It is possible to catch chicken

pox from someone with active shingles, but it requires some determination!

Most shingles will clear up and cause no further issues. Some people find the skin remains sensitive or has an altered sensation for some time.

Of course, if you feel unwell at all and think you may have shingles, you must seek medical advice.

TWO YEARS ON AND GOING STRONG!

Charlotte and Anthony opened Wilkinson SLM on the 1st February 2021, joined by their daughter Annie, with the intention of ‘Changing the Face of Estate Agency’. In September of 2021, Charlotte’s sister Vicki completed the family team.

Now, two years after opening, Charlotte describes the ethos of this close-knit family unit, ‘We wanted and still want to give the best possible service, a personal service, rather than endless emails, text messages and bots. We prefer to speak to people, to learn what they want and hopefully realise

their dreams’.

Anthony says, ‘We are not afraid of technology, far from it, we have just released our own app for both Apple and Android phones which shows all our properties and you can also book viewings and valuations. This is also mirrored on our new website’.

Charlotte finishes by

saying ‘We are here to make peoples dreams come true and in reality we wouldn’t be here if not for the amazing support we have had from the people of Tewkesbury. Our promise is still the same as it was two years ago, to help people realise their dreams of selling, buying or renting their

own homes’.

To contact Wilkinson SLM and be part of the family call 01684 367736 or email charlotte@wilkinsonslm. co.uk.

MORE ABOUT “2023 – THE YEAR OF THE VANISHING BIN?”

It’s hard to recall the days when we had no wheelie bins. The bins we had then were mostly galvanised metal and nobody kept them on the pavements! writes Alan Purkiss of Tewkesbury Civic Society.

Of course, those were the days before everything was packaged; days when there was little to recycle and no plastic to get rid of. How times have changed.

Our Authority, like all such, has to deal with a vastly increased volume of both recycled material and waste and, to be fair, it does a quite good job. It is the unintended consequences, primarily bins stored on pavements, that give us grief, particularly in the conservation area.

Nationally there is no specific refuse collection policy. Each Authority is able to decide upon the type of bin supplied: whether two like ours, or a series of material specific boxes - one for bottles, one for cardboard etc. The choice made obviously affects vehicle design in the collection fleet but there are other implications, not leastbin storage.

Some factors may change in future: packaging may reduce in volume and more of it be recyclable. The Authority may require resident or kerbside sorting.

Government may require Authorities to standardise more to reap economies of scale.

However, in any scenario, if bins are difficult to store or to bring through properties, then a responsible Authority

Bins should NOT be issued where there is no storage space on the property.

Such measures are being adopted round the country but belatedly, because the focus has always been on recycling

should provide alternatives like communal storage and/or a blue bag system (as offered in Tewkesbury). All aimed at avoiding storage on the pavements.

Planners must ensure space is allocated in new and redeveloped property to store bins and conditions imposed to stop the allocated spaces being misused.

and waste management, and not the unintended consequences.

However, the success of these measures is still very dependent on the cooperation of residents and the degree of civic pride in the local community as a whole. We hope that it is sufficient here to make 2023 the year of the vanishing bin!

SEVERN UNIT MVS KEPT BUSY WITH FLOODWATER LEVELS RISING

Severn Unit has been called out on a very stormy wet afternoon when the EA predicted a rise of another meter on the already swollen River Avon.

Once again three members (Head of Unit Nic Price, Peter Dallow and Reachmaster Will Fish) took their Rigiflex workboat down to Avon Lock at the request of Avon Navigation Trust who were concerned for the safety of the “William James” their own 65ft Widebeam which is moored in Tewkesbury and is the River Avon Welcome Centre.

HOU Nic Price said “We managed to reach the boat and moor her with extra ropes to much higher mooring poles which should hopefully keep her safe. Whilst the unit was out they also did a river patrol checking any other boats that were still on that part of the Navigation.”

SEVERN UNIT MVS CALLED OUT FOR FLOOD PROBLEM

With rising river levels on both the Severn and Avon Tewkesbury based Severn Unit Maritime Volunteer Serice was on full alert and they soon had their first call out for the New Year this week when Avon Navigation Trust telephoned Head of Unit Nic Price and asked if they could manage to get to Avon Lock and secure a large Widebeam steel boat which appeared to be in difficulty.

Nic reported “Three of us (Nic Price, David Wilson and Reachmaster Will Fish) took our Rigiflex workboat out and just squeezed under King John’s Bridge to reach the lock. The boat could have easily floated free as the one rope was near the top of a small mooring pole and the water levels were rising fast so we climbed aboard and securely tied three further ropes around some trees so the boat could rise safely. The owners had already evacuated from the boat some days previously and the only way to get out to the boat to secure her was by river in our Rigiflex training boat and we are now closely monitoring the situation.”

NEWTOWN WI

We ended our year with a ‘Dickensian Christmas,’ and started the New Year with a talk about the many uses of the Ham over the years from cattle grazing to regattas to horse racing , and now it is very much an environmental resource with some rare plants and of course a valuable water storage unit. An interesting talk enjoyed by all.

Our next meeting will be on the 8th February when the speaker will be John Dixon talking about the GI Invasion of Ashchurch.

We are a very friendly group and would love to welcome you to our meetings which take place on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Wheatpieces Community Centre starting at 2pm. If you are interested in joining us, just come along, we would love to see you, or you can contact Julie Pullen on 01684 301267 or by email at pullenj53@sky.com

Fitting carpets in the homes of Tewkesbury for over 30 years

A PERSONAL VIEW by reader Anthony Stockman Electric cars –are they really the future?

I personally don’t think so – and there are many reasons why I think they’re not. Basically, they are not as clean and wonderful as the manufacturers would have you believe!

So, what’s wrong? Well, to start with, they have limited range, despite claims of exceptional mileage capability.

For instance:- Normal STEADY driving, without hard acceleration or braking may just about get somewhere near to their mileage claims. BUT – if you turn on the A/C/Climate, or heating, or braking, or acceleration for overtaking, watch those figures crumble! On a hot

summer’s day, with the A/C turned up, you can kiss goodbye to half of the range claimed – and that’s significant!

More importantly –they’re NOT carbon free – not by a long way. How is that? Well the most obvious one is that they need charging, more or less every day, which requires electricity, which uses energy, which produces CO2 – the deadly enemy of global temperature rise. But what about the carbon footprint left in their manufacture? Few realise that in order to mine the ‘precious’ rare earth metals- Cobalt, Lithium, nickel and manganese. Mining for those elements, generates considerably more atmospheric carbon that any petrol or diesel vehicle. Plus the batteries, add disproportionate addi-

tional weight to the vehicle structure.

To give you an example:- A Renault Zoe, which is the smallest Renault ‘E’ car, weighs in at a staggering 1575 kilos, which is the same weight as a diesel Skoda Octavia Estate!! Now –because of ‘Diesel-gate’, every manufacturer has switched to Petrol-Hybrids, because the misconception is that all diesels are ‘dirty’, which actually they’re not. The latest generation 6.1 diesels are far cleaner and more fuel efficient than ANY petrol engine by a big margin. Modern diesels are nearly twice as efficient as the petrol equivalent and as a result – pollute far less than their petrol brothers, hence the ability to deliver 50, 60 or 70 MPG. Those diesels equipped with an

‘AdBlue’ tank , carry out ‘catalytic cracking’ at 800 degrees C, where the ‘pig’s pee’ (which is basically what it is), is injected high up into the exhaust manifold splitting the oxygen and nitrogen radicals into their respective elements, removing all traces of N02 (nitrogen Dioxide), leaving CO2 and water to hit the atmosphere. However, take into account the greater efficiency of the diesel over petrol – and you have the cleanest vehicles on the planet.

The production of a petrol or diesel car, such as a Ford Focus, from iron ore to finished article rolling off the production line, creates roughly 7.5 tons of CO2; by comparison, the equivalent ‘E’ car/vehicle, due to the additional mining involved as well as the battery creation, dumps

twice as much CO2 into the atmosphere as its internal combustion engine equivalent:- 15 tons or more. This actually makes the ‘E’ car more polluting, as tyre degradation due to the additional weight, throws off far more carcinogenic particles than its lighter weight brothers. Tesla’s carbon footprint is over 20 tons. To become ‘Carbon neutral’ in a diesel or petrol family car,

you will need to travel at least 150,000 miles.

To do so in an ‘E’ car, we’re talking more than 200,000 miles – and you’ll be extremely lucky to get that kind of mileage out of the battery, (let alone all the other components), before it needs replacing.

So just before you go and ‘splash the cash’ on the ‘electric revolution’, you’re actually not doing the world any favours.

A selection of our current permanent opportunities listed below (correct at time of press). Please email your CV so you don’t miss any relevant openings.

Oasis is an ambitious project within Tewkesbury Methodist Church at e Cross. It is intended to be an inclusive place of welcome to all; a community hub where hospitality is extended to everyone. e project itself was conceived prior to Covid and whilst lockdown temporarily hindered our progress we are now enthusiastically re-launching our plans and want to share these with the local community and any interested parties, at an Open Day on Tuesday 21st February. e premises will be open between 10am and 4pm and we encourage all local people and those with an interest in community issues, to come along – chat to us – see our plans – and contribute thoughts and ideas that would enhance our vision.

e building is situated on the Cross in Tewkesbury so well placed for community events and activities and this is precisely what the Oasis team want to encourage. ere are plans to alter the interior of the building to make it more accessible, and more suited to a wider range of activities. ere will also be a second oor with access via stairs and a li and kitchen areas. e frontage will be opened up to be more inviting. e church will of course retain its worship area, but this will be reduced by using folding doors so there will be the opportunity to fully open up the space for weddings, funerals, and concerts, but keeping the exibility of having more areas available. We also have a large hall, smaller meeting room and fully equipped kitchen behind the main building which are also available for community use.

e ethos of our membership is one of inclusivity where people of all faiths and none are welcome. We are authorised to conduct same sex marriage and have been o cially registered as an inclusive church. Accessibility is a key feature of the changes we are making on the premises so that we can cater for a wider group of people for whom this is vital. O en, various diversity factors can mean that people become excluded and social isolation can result.

At the heart of our project is our vision to provide a place where all can feel safe comfortable and be made truly welcome.

We are very keen that this be a building for the community, and we want to provide what people want, so please do come along on the 21st of February and share your thoughts on how we can best achieve this. We are at the point of planning when we can still incorporate any ideas or suggestions from the general public.

One addition that is due to be included will be a Changing Places facility (a larger accessible toilet for severely disabled people, with space for carers). is will be available 24/7 right in the heart of the town.

TEWKESBURY THEN AND NOW with John Dixon of Tewkesbury

Historical Society

41 High Street: follow up

I was both pleased - and surprised - by the reaction to the article on 41 High Street, published in last November’s Tewkesbury Direct, writes John Dixon.

Daphne Burcombe (née Taylor) wrote that her father owned the electrical business which

occupied it until 1960 when he moved to 37 High Street, (formerly occupied by Mayor

WASHING MACHINE REPAIRS

Moulder).

He was also able to buy land on York Road. Prior’s Park which he called Braemar, a popular holiday destination which inspired house names in the era.

I always wondered why private houses were built at Priors Park.

Maybe it was an enlightened social experiment or was it a means by which the council recouped its investment in council housing?

Mr Taylor engaged the well-known architect Peter Preston, son of the

tailor Freddie if the Market Shops, High Street.

They obviously did a good job with its appearance 75 years later - and it is good that Mrs. Burcombe reads Tewkesbury Direct from her new home and took the trouble to teach us more about our history.

PS I committed an error – I was looking for information on Dr. ANDREW Chapman – hs is now an author with such historical fiction books as IKON – a super read!
