Annie’s
Booth
by Karen Joy Fowler Paperback £9.99
The outcome of this ambitious book is never in doubt.
It is a fictional biography of the Booth family, in their time famous actors, but their notoriety and place in history is cemented by the actions of John Wilkes Booth who assassinated Abraham Lincoln.
The author takes us through the lives of his parents, the births of all their many children, detailing the bereavements endured when four did not survive.
Father, Junius Brutus Booth
is a renowned Shakespearean actor with a reputation for dramatic performances, especially Richard III and his love of the bottle; the two mixing on stage. Mother, Mary Ann Holmes, stays at home creating a nucleus around which her children grow up, loved. They initially live some 30 miles from Baltimore, on a farm founded on poor unproductive land which does not prosper but the stage provides a living when not squandered away. Over the years the household does move about the country, but the farm remains somewhere they can return to away from more urban life where their theatrical lives lead the family to reside.
The surviving children June, Rosalie, Edwin, Asia, a precocious daughter, then John Wilkes, and finally Joseph. All three brothers eventually become actors like their father, but only Edwin ever manages to match his father's star status. We follow the family's lives through the eyes of some of these offspring, from childhood through maturity into older age. Their parents marriage is detailed, as are their own relationships. The author is showing how all they experience and endure leads towards that fatal encounter in the theatre.
Against this background there is the ever present influence of slavery and the rift between North and South until hostilities breakout and the Civil War brings terrible suffering to both factions. The story is never centred on the battlefields, their thespian lives evolve, with John Wilkes, a Confederate
supporter, at odds with his siblings. His eventual crime and what leads him to undertake such a deed revealed in a very readable way - history explained in a fictitious format.
Whilst the Booth family dominate the book there are the lives of enslaved Ann and Joe Hall who work on the farm, Joe basically managing the family enterprise. Their lives and offspring feature throughout the book. There are also a lot of individuals, some family, some close friendships, some adversaries that add colour to the story providing strength to the biographical background the author is presenting to her readers. What is self-evident is the huge amount of research she has undertaken to write this book creating an interesting accessible read.
Throughout the novel there are regular introductory "chapters" following the career and life of Lincoln himself, though he is never a central character only on that final fatal theatre trip in 1865 does he ever actually feature fully s an individual.
I enjoyed this book - it is good; worthy of the praise it had been lauded with. As the story unfolds and the lives of all the Booths gain momentum the influences of their childhoods and America's history of enslavement brings the novel towards it's eventual inevitable sad outcome. The author certainly succeeds in her ambitious project.

This splendid photograph of the Aston Cross pub was given to her neighbour by Ethel Gannaway, daughter of John S. Gannaway, writes John Dixon.
Mr Gannaway was a Builder’s Manager of Collins & Godfrey who lived at 38 Ashchurch
Road in front of Canterbury Leys 1970s development. He is pictured in the trilby behind the right-hand horse and he died in 1954. Therefore, is the hunt pictured before or after World War II? I think the licensee was called Chamberlain – can any reader help date the photograph?
Although she was a pupil teacher in 1921 at Barton Road School, Ethel is remembered as a drapery assistant at Hopkins in the High
Street from about 1939she had her own special way of stretching a newly purchased hat!
I celebrated my retirement as a teacher in 2001 in the Skittle Alley of the pub but, sadly, it has gone the way of many recently by being converted c2019 into flats, with interesting houses replacing the stables at the rear. I would appreciate an invitation to see one of these houses!

Our agricultural colleagues can’t cut hedges until 1st September, unless an exemption has been sought, but we gardeners can, in most circumstances.
This is a frequently misunderstood law that I find myself explaining every year.
However, if you disturb nesting birds, you are breaching the Wildlife and Countryside Act which is a criminal offence and I’m glad to say that Gloucestershire Constabulary do enforce this.
So, check inside your hedges and topiary because so many species of bird are very seriously under threat. If there’s any doubt delay the work.
Where I work, we have a very high standard of cut, which is hard to learn but pays off for career-minded gardeners. My biggest bug-bear is allowing the top of a hedge to grow wider than the base.
extra time.
Most cuts should be in sweeping arcs, not straight lines and spheres or curves should always be cut like this; and never be afraid to use hand shears over power tools.
If big branches are
growing, cut them out with loppers because a hole this year will be gone next year but branches within foliage will look unsightly forever.
Change the angle of the cutting head - sometimes it should be paral-
lel to the face, sometimes angled to get a sharper or more precise cut. And learn to cut right angles on corners. Chamfered edges are much easier and quicker to cut, but don’t look as crisp or skilful. Above all, stand back often and view the job from multiple angles and be critical of your own work.
Tim Hoskins
This is irrecoverable in some species, so I nag my team about this a lot. It used to be common practice to cut a barely perceptible angle, narrowing towards the top to allow light to reach the whole plant.
Modern cuts tend to be vertical-sided (because it’s easier) but you may notice poorer growth on the north side or in shade if you favour this.
Another tip is to use a frame/jig/string to get your lines straight until you’re experienced enough to cut by eye. The results are worth the

A Medieval Murder solved in Tewkesbury
Local author Sarah Hawkswood, known to many of our readers for her series of Medieval mysteries, has just published her eleventh Bradecote and Catchpoll book, writes Ian B. Nicholson.
Sarah Hawkswood has a loyal band of followers and is a regular visitor to Alison's Bookshop to sign the stock. She made a special trip down to Tewkesbury to add her signature to her new novel “Too Good to Hang” which has a strong Tewkesbury setting.

Bradecote is the Undersheriff of Worcestershire, Catchpoll his Serjeant, investigating a murder in Ripple where the body of the village priest Father Edmund is discovered. Ploughman Thorgood is found nearby, blood on his hands.
Thorgood is swiftly hanged for the crime but his sister travels to Worcester to seek justice for her brother. The Lord Sheriff sends his men, along with Under-serjeant Walkelin, to uncover the truth.
As the story unfolds their investigations lead them to Tewkesbury, as
ever, justice prevails and the murder solved.
The true facts revealed in the last cottage “on the east side of the street that headed north to the crossing of the Avon to Mythe and up the hill towards Worcester and stood barely one hundred paces up from the junction where the markets were held.”
This is the home of Oldmother Holeway, “an independent soul about whom all Tewkesbury had an opinion.”
Over the many years Sarah has been signing her books at Alison's Bookshop's, she has promised a story with a Tewkesbury setting.
Naturally the Abbey and river also feature however she has located her denouement where Alison's Bookshop now stands, a place she knows well!
Copies of “Too Good to Hang" are available at Alison's Bookshop in Tewkesbury High Street at £19.99 (hardback only) - signed copies while stocks last.

ALLEYWAYS with Steve Goodchild
The Sun Alley, Inn and Street
Sun Street was named for an inn, or maybe more properly a coaching house, of the same name. The pub, demolished in 1859, stood more or less where Greggs now have their shop. It was demolished to create a road to the Oldbury, which was at that time a rapidly growing development area.
There are no known images of the inn but the sale particulars from 1859 give a reasonable picture: It had ‘a carriage drive from the High Street through to the Oldbury Road with a brewhouse, court yards, extensive stabling and coach houses. Also, two cottages adjoining. Also, a valuable piece of land, formerly a garden but recently used as a skittle alley and quoit ground’.
This says nothing about the Inn itself, but a description of that comes from an earlier sale, in 1808, which described ‘parlours, dining room, bed chambers, bar, kitchen, brewhouse and domestic offices, with excellent cellaring and stabling’.
A substantial coaching inn, occupying a wide burgage plot which included an alley, once called Herbert’s Alley but

generally known as Sun Alley, with seven occupied cottages in 1841.
The earliest reference to the Sun Inn was in May 1793 when John Pitt took over an existing business. Later in the year Sergeant Day, of Captain Wall’s Independent Company, lodged there whilst hunting down local army deserters.
Charles Dudfield took over from John Pitt in 1809, having previously been landlord of the Fleece Inn, which is now ‘Blow’ Hairdressers. His time at the Sun seemed to be marked by animals abandoned at the inn, especially cows, which he advertised that he would sell to recover his
costs if the owners didn’t claim them, and pay the costs. This highlighted the inn’s close association with agriculture and livestock.
Early in 1819, Charles Dudfield sold up and John Insall moved in. He had a bad start, because his wife died in June. Six months later, though, he remarried. In 1837, John died and his son Henry took on the tenancy. Henry started an association with the Ham horse races, and was secretary to the event for several years. The Sun was an official venue for offcourse betting. In about 1845, the sheep fair was established at the back of the Inn, entered from Oldbury Road. In 1852
Henry Insall died, at 49 years of age, and 33 years of Insall occupation came to an end.
The new landlord was Dan Kitton. His first announcement was that horses and gigs could be hired from him. He was in the news for shooting a rabid dog which had escaped from the Cross Keys but horses seemed to be his speciality He also worked as a trainer and jockey. In 1954 he was an expert witness in a court case, advising on the costs of keeping horses. Later, he was giving lessons in horse
taming, using Mr Rarey’s revolutionary method. In 1859, he quit and sold up. He got into trouble for obstructing a County Court bailiff who was attempting to take possession of fittings from the billiard room. He had paid 20 or 30 children to jeer at him and impede his progress. It gained him nothing more than a 5s fine, though.
When the Inn was put up for sale the whole site was bought by the Borough Council, with the intention of creating a new road. This they did, and Sun Street was born. Confusingly, it was often referred to as Station Street, being almost in line with the street of that name. There was more than enough land for the road.
The sheep fair was retained at the Oldbury Road end and the land on the High Street was bought by Joseph Pugh, of the Anchor Inn, who intended building a new Sun Inn. It only got as far as the foundations, though.
The discovery of the skeleton of a young woman three feet below the surface seems to have brought the project to an end. Instead, the Borough Council bought the land and erected a row of very distinctive small workshops and offices along the street. The Sun Inn’s spirits licence was transferred to the Albion Inn.
And so things stayed for about a century, until the Bishops Walk development swallowed up the old Sun Street, its sheep fair and little workshops. A new street, still remembering an Inn which was demolished so long ago that we have no image of it, was made further up the High Street.

practice that should be embraced by all.
There is plenty of documented research and personal testimony as to how meditation impacts, from reducing stress and anxiety to improving focus and emotional resilience to promoting overall wellness.
Moreover life is a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs, and it’s during the tumultuous moments that meditation shines as a guiding light.
Meditation equips indi-
viduals with the tools to navigate stress uncertainty and adversity in a positive way.
Meditation nurtures a sense of interconnectedness and compassion for others. By cultivating qualities such as empathy and kindness, meditation can help us transform our relationships in a very meaningful way.
Lastly discover an antidote to the digital overload we often face. Through meditation we can restore focus, cre-
ativity and inner peace in an increasingly noisy world.
Over these four weeks I hope to inspire individuals from all walks of life to embrace meditation as a powerful tool for increased wellbeing and personal growth. It is time to acknowledge that meditation is for you, me and everyone who is in need of more peace, meaning and contentment.

At the end of the road bear right and go down the lane which leads to Buryend Farm (3)
Pass through the farm and follow the way markers which lead across fields and down the River Severn.
When you meet the riverbank, (4) turn left and follow the footpath keeping the River Severn on your right.
You are now on the Lower Ham, and as you pass the old railway embankment, you will see the vast expanse of
the Upper Ham ahead of you. This is a popular spot for anglers and walkers; the path you are on is part of the long distance Severn Way.
Dogs should be kept on leads as sheep graze here from the summer months until February.
Upton Ham is a nature reserve, and is traditionally managed to preserve its delicate and rare flora and fauna.
As you reach Uptonyou can see the entrance to the marina on the opposite bank, where many pleasure craft are moored. This side of the river is worth a visit too, and is easily accessible by crossing the road bridge in the town.
At the end of the Ham go through the gate and on to a tarmac road (5).
Continue to walk with the river to your right, bearing right at the Swan Hotel. After passing several pubs, turn left (6) to return to the town centre. The former ‘pepperpot’ church on the right now houses the tourist information centre. At the junction with
the main road, carry on straight ahead, passing the Anchor Inn to your
left. Keep going along the road ahead, until you return to point one.

Autumn Folk Music Series at the Old Baptist Chapel
A new season of contemporary folk music starting next month will see some of the country’s leading singer/songwriters return to Tewkesbury.
Getting the series of concerts underway on Saturday 2nd September is Steve Ashley.
Long regarded as one
of British folk's finest singer-songwriters, Steve’s reputation for composing contemporary songs inspired by
the English Tradition was established in 1974 with his innovative debut album, Stroll On.
Since then his songs
have been recorded by many leading folk artists including Anne Briggs, O’Hooley & Tidow, Fairport Convention, Show of Hands, Ralph McTell and Wizz Jones.
He has also played a significant role in the development of British folk-rock, performing as a lead singer with the first Albion Country Band, then with his own Ragged Robin and various line-ups of The Steve Ashley Band. He has also performed occasionally with members of Fairport Convention.
Tickets for the Old Baptist Chapel show are available on line from www.wegottickets.com/ event/585705, where you can also find more information.

Probus Club’s visit to the Needle Museum
Tewkesbury
We entered the Museum into the scouring room where used or corroded needles from local mills or factories were scoured or polished back to their original condition for reuse. The workshop where this took place seemed unchanged from when it was operational in the 1800’s even to the distinctive smell of oily rags and old machinery.
The Museum features realistic full size models of Victorian workers
hard at work (some with children to help them) and our guide told us that many of the workers faced considerable health hazards because of their particular activity within the Mill.
At that time, the area around Redditch was the world’s leading source of all different types of needles (including fishing hooks, medical sutures and hypodermic needles) and hundreds of examples of these are all on
display at the Museum.
Back in Bredon we again welcomed Kirsty Bingham from the John Moore museum who
ic and sometimes gory descriptions of medieval medicine she explained how people at that time, with no knowledge of
who served a seven year apprenticeship, interestingly the same training period for medical professionals in the present day and she handed around all manner of implements that they might have used at the time for amputations, removing cataracts, extracting arrow heads from injured soldiers or trepanning the skull (boring a hole in it) all of course performed with no anaesthetic!

came to tell us of the unusual medical cures and treatments inflicted on unfortunate patients in the middle ages. With the help of some graph-
infection or bacteria, believed that illnesses were spread by “miasmas” or bad smells. Kirsty also described the work of the Barber Surgeons

FEET!
They get us from A to B everyday, be it walking down the street, peddling a bicycle or driving your car. We tend not to give them much thought, but feet are actually quite amazing.
In each of your feet there are 26 bones which form 30 joints and these are held together by over 100 ligaments, tendons and muscles. The reason there are so many moving parts is due to the foot having to be two opposing things; it must be flexible, yet solid. It must be flexible to accommodate the varying terrain we walk on. If our feet didn’t have any give, we would fall over every time we stepped on a small bump on the ground. The foot achieves flexibility by having lots of small bones which are held together with strong ligaments. This allows the foot the flex and adapt to the ground as we walk. But if our feet were only flexible, we wouldn’t be able to walk. When we walk, run or jump we lift our heel off the ground and push off with the ball of our foot. Now if the foot stayed flexible here, we
would simply carry on flexing and fall forward rather than pushing off the ground. Your foot has a very clever solution to this. As your heel comes up off the ground, the front of your foot stays on the ground, this
big toe upwards (the same as your heel coming off the ground) and try to do the same. Much harder isn’t it!
tensions your plantar fascia (dense connective tissue under the arch of your foot). This tension pulls the bones of foot together and this acts as a solid structure from which to push off! Pretty impressive! You can feel this for yourself if you gently hold the ball of your foot near your big toe and give it a wiggle. It moves around fairly easily. Now bend your
Our feet can also show us signs of certain health conditions. The feet may swell up if you have a heart or lung issue, you may get pins and needles or numbness if you have diabetes or even a pinched nerve in your back. They may even turn cold and white if you have a circulation issue. Feet tend not to cause us as many issues as our back and neck but the most common issue I see is Plantar fasciitis, which can be very uncomfortable indeed. The bones of the foot can also get a little stuck from time to time. If you develop a foot issue don’t forget to consult your GP, Podiatrist, Osteopath or other healthcare professional. Look after your feet, after all, they literally walk you through life.

DECARBONISATION PROJECT
As part of our decarbonis ation project, The Wheatpieces Parish Council have replaced the gas boilers and radiators with an air source heat pump system and solar panels at the Community Centre The project was funded using the Community Infrastructure Levy monies available. This will ultimately make the centre more economical to run and we can already see considerable savings in energy usage Running costs have reduced by 79% when comparing April 2023 to April 2022. The next phase is to consider battery storage which will enable the centre to become carbon neutral , which in the current climate is a considerable achievement Cllr. Meredith (Chairman) quoted “ We are delighted with the installation by the contractors and the systems performance. We are now using renewable energy to run the centre”
BIODIVERSITY PROJECT
A project is now underway, following research and guidance from a specialist from the Tewkesbury Nature Reserve. The plan is to introduce more bee friendly planting in the Community Centre Gardens and open spaces on the estate, including seasonal planting along Woodland Walk. ‘Bee Hotels’ will be donated and crafted by Tewkesbury Scout Group with the cost of materials covered by the Parish. Further funding will be obtained from the Gloucester County Council’s ‘Build Back Better’ scheme. Cllr. Saunders, who instigated the project quoted “As we know British bees are in decline, the Wheatpieces estate can easily incorporate planting and aids to encourage bees and other pollinating insects The opportunity to encourage wildlife and do our bit for nature being our main priority.”
BOUNDARY REVIEW 2023
Tewkesbury Meadow has now been incorporated into Wheatpieces Parish Council boundary from Ashchurch Rural Council boundary with effect from May 2023 The council would like to welcome all residents to the parish and encourage anyone to contact the Wheatpieces Parish Council office with any issues or requests that should arise. We aim to assist and act on behalf of our residents wherever possible using our contacts at the Borough & County Councils . The Parish holds meetings on the first Thursday of every month to which all residents are welcome Meeting dates can be found on our website. We also hold coffee mornings every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm at the Community Centre. Tea, coffee, biscuits, book swap and a chance to chat and meet other residents!

Celebrating a milestone with Kemerton WI
Following on from our own Centenary Celebrations in April, one of our members, Bett Norris, celebrated her 100th Birthday on June 1st.
This momentous occasion was marked with a tea party for WI members and some of Bett’s friends from the village in Kemerton Village Hall on Sunday 4th June.
Here we all enjoyed a selection of sumptuous sandwiches, savoury nibbles, delicious homemade cake, tasty scones and fresh strawberries all prepared and provided for her by her fellow WI members.
There was even a superb celebratory birthday cake, made especial-
ly for her by one of our members, but we drew the line at 10 candles!
Fun, laughter and a lot of chattering were the ingredients of the afternoon, as everyone celebrated and marked this
occasion in a relaxed atmosphere, that many will remember with a smile.
And most importantly one that Bett, our guest of honour thoroughly enjoyed.

Tewkesbury C of E Primary School, Awarded OPAL Platinum
Mr Rylatt (Headteacher) would like to say a huge congratulations to the Tewkesbury C of E OPAL team, staff, pupils, governors and families on the school’s recent OPAL Platinum play award. This is a fantastic achievement and one the whole school community should feel very proud of. Achieving a Platinum play award recognises that Tewkesbury C of E Primary School’s outdoor play provision is some of the best in the country (in the top 1% of all schools).
The great outdoors and play form an intrinsic part of a child’s development. It was this recognition that led Tewkesbury C of E to revolutionise the play opportunities it provides through the use of the Outdoor Play and Learning scheme (OPAL).
The scheme is centred around making every play time the best it can possibly be for all children.
Children learn essential skills inside the classroom but the skills that they generate and build on in the natural world are equally as important. Whilst it might just look like a den to you or me, what the children are experiencing are opportunities to develop resilience, teamwork, negotiation skills, perseverance and character building which are often difficult to teach in the classroom. Children thrive when they are en-
gaged and OPAL looks to do just that.
OPAL also reminds us that 20% of a pupil’s entire time at primary school is spent at play and thus should be an area that schools look to develop and maximise.
Tewkesbury C of E began their journey in June 2021 and have been supported by their OPAL mentor, Rachel Murray, throughout the process. The changes are not just physical ones on the playground but an entire shift in the culture surrounding play and how staff can use it as an additional learning opportunity and to provide new experiences.
MITTON W.I.
At our June meeting we were visited by Steve Goodchild who gave a talk about the Alleyways of Tewkesbury. Unfortunately our speaker for July was taken ill so we were forced to improvise with a quiz for the ladies.
Mr Stagg, the curricular lead, has passionately driven forward the OPAL programme at Tewkesbury C of E for the past 2 years. Alongside him, Mr Hoare, the school’s site manager, has been instrumental throughout the OPAL journey, using his passion, skill and generosity to help the school create a bespoke chariot, jeep, 40 tonne sand pit and, most recently, an entire obstacle course. Mr Stagg and Mr Hoare have always believed that the benefits of OPAL were (and are) invaluable to all children, a belief that is shared by all of the staff.
There is no meeting during August so our next meeting will be in September when we will be visited by the Severn Freewheeler Blood Bikes, all of whom are volunteers and will tell us all about their great work.
Mitton W.I. meet at Mitton Manor School 7.30pm every first Monday of the month (unless bank holiday). All welcome so come along and join us. If you would like more information please ring 01684 292385, Mitton-WI@gmail.com or look for Mitton WI on Facebook.
Over the last 2 years, Tewkesbury C of E has remodelled their entire play space to also include: den building, tree climbing, outdoor speakers, scooters, table tennis, mud kitchen and the rewilding of parts of the school site with
new trees, hedgerows and wildflowers. Many of these would not have been possible without the support and generous donations from the school’s parents and many local and national businesses.

Tewkesbury ‘in Bloom’
Tewkesbury Town is now in ‘full bloom’ thanks to the support of local people and businesses.
TiB is always particularly grateful to Laurence at The Cross Tavern for his generous contribution towards the cost of the displays at the Memorial Cross, which is one of our largest expenses.
Children from both Ashchurch School and Tirlebrook School took part in work-shops with us which were organised by Tewkesbury Culture. They then grew the plants from plugs, nurturing and watering them until they were ready for the planters, that are now adorning the Abbey Mill Bridge.
Following last year’s month of drought we opted for geraniums this

Evesham’s turn to do battle!
If you enjoyed last month’s re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, you might like to step back further in time in Evesham this month.
The re-enactment of the 13th Century Battle of Evesham will take place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th August.
There will also be a Medieval camp, craft and cookery demonstrations, musicians, trade stalls, a market and refreshment tents.
Knights in armour will also parade through the town.
The battle actually took place a little to the north of Evesham on 4th August 1265, but the re-enactment will be held on the attractive Crown Meadow, next to the River Avon. More details from www.battle ofevesham.co.uk
