The shop, which will be in the former M&Co premises, will employ three members of staff and a van team.
Manager Paul Newman said: “This superstore is our biggest yet and will play an essential role in raising awareness of our charity and funds for lifeline care, plus the support we offer to local children and their families.
“We hope to be open at the end of May, and we are also looking to recruit a team of volunteers to help us run the Tewkesbury Shop.”

River Spirit
by Leila Aboulela Paperback £9.99
This novel is set in Sudan during the 1880s. The author, herself Sudanese, certainly manages to immerse her reader into the time and location.
You can feel the heat, the dust of Sudan and visualise the banks of the Nile rivers on which the story is set. There is a useful map which helps to appreciate the geographical surroundings and distances when journeys are made but the primary setting is eventually Khartoum, the confluence of the Blue and White Nile rivers.
Brother and sister, Bol and Akuany are orphaned; she is just 11 years old - it is her life that we follow and that of Yaseen a merchant who, for years, had traded with her father who is killed, during such a visit. Yaseen takes on responsibility for the children he has known for all their lives, during his regular negotiations with their father.
Yaseen is the second principle character and the reader witnesses his life as trader, then student, then as a Muslim legal attorney. Sudan, part of the Ottoman Empire, a fading force, falls into a state of civil war initiated by a selfordained Mahdi, who Yaseen does not support which leads to his wellbeing and that of Akuany being at risk.
Akuany has a hard teenage life she is traded like a commodity, but Yaseen returns time and again to honour his vow to look after the siblings. Bol himself is left in the care of Yaseen's family only resurfacing later as the siege of Khartoum intensifies. We follow Akuany, later known as
ZamZam, as she travels from south Sudan up to Khartoum.
She is basically enslaved but forever holds a soft spot for Yaseen. It is her devotion to him, and how their lives intermingle, as Sudan collapses, which is at the heart of the book driving the story forward through history.
General Gordon is featured as war encroaches on Khartoum and Omdurman; he is just one of the auxillary characters as well as Robert, a Scottish engineer and artist working in the city, who plays his own role in Akuany's story.
This readable and interesting insight into Sudan during the 1880s, and how the capital fell in 1885 after 10 months of onslaught is a good reminder of this period of African history.
The whole book is enlivened by the Leila Aboulela's authoritative narrative so we, her audience, learn a lot about her homeland, as the Ottoman Empire lost authority and British Imperialism tried to impose itself on Sudan opening the opportunity of the Mahdi revolution.

In the March edition of Tewkesbury Direct we published a 1961 photograph of town Mayor Harry Workman having his shoes shined by lads from the Boys Brigade.
Thanks to our readers, we have now solved the mystery - although four names have been suggested for the trio.
Reader Callum Lisseman contacted us to say “The young man in the image polishing the shoe (left) is my grandad. His name is Graham Neal.”
Callum and his mum Christine got in touch with Graham to be sure. Graham (pictured below) replied:
“I believe you are looking for the shoe
SHOE-SHINE BOYS FOUND!
shine boy - well you have found him.
“It is me, Graham Neal. The lad squatting down by the side of me is Derek Henderson and the one standing up is Alec Lawson, so the mystery is solved.”
Or is it? Because another of our readers, Amy Stuart, got in touch to say:
“I am writing in regard to the article ‘can you help us to find
Tewkesbury s shoe shine boys of 1961.’
“I believe that the boy to the front of the picture is my father John Stuart. “He has a recollection of the event and we have
pictures of him on the day in 1961 in his Boys Brigade uniform.” Thanks to everyone who responded to the article.

A
clear way forward for local door and window company
Thriving local door and window company Clearway is re-structuring to meet high demand for its market-leading products.
Cheltenham-based Clearway Doors and Windows Ltd has been manufacturing and installing windows and doors for over forty years, growing from a two-man business to its present size, employing over 30 staff.
The company was bought out by its current management team in 2017. Managing Director Jeremy Phillips, who was born in Kemerton and grew up in Bredon, outlined the new plans for developing the company.
“For a number of years we have had both a factory and showrooms at the Kingsditch Trading Estate in Cheltenham, plus a specialist trade door and window fabrication unit in Gloucester - CDW Systems Ltd.
“To allow for expansion, we have decided to move all our manufacturing from Cheltenham to Gloucester, and at the same time we will be centralising our sales and accounts operations from Gloucester to Cheltenham.
“This will create one hub of manufacturing excellence in Gloucester,
and allow for the expansion of the installation and cabinet manufacturing in Cheltenham. As part of the ongoing development programme, Clearway will also be establishing a new technical department in Gloucester. Clearway are constantly introducing new products to satisfy the demand of both commercial and domestic clients.
The company has undertaken a variety of projects over the years; schools, hospitals, factories and sports clubs have all appreciated the service and high levels of customer care received - as well as individual clients whose
needs vary from a single item or a refurbishment, right up to a complete new build.
Last year saw the launch of Lumina F82 Bifold Doors, as well as art-deco style internal screening.
Flat roof lights and lanterns are also proving extremely popular - and demand for Clearway’s internal display cabinets for museums and specialists collections is also strong.
This year the group are introducing the Technal FZ75 ‘Soleal Next’ range from Hydro, who are based in Tewkesbury. Clearway and CDW have a long history of collaboration with this global systems company, and have worked closely with them to improve sustainability and efficiency. Jeremy commented: “We are always keen to promote the green credentials of aluminium, and share Hydro’s vision for future sustainability.” For further information about Clearway’s products, see the ad below or visit the website www.clearwaydoors andwindows.co.uk
For over forty years Clearway have brought cutting edge technology to an exceptional range of doors and windows. Unique designs with traditional elegance, classic or contemporary style - all with unrivalled safety, security and insulation properties, keeping you safe and warm whatever the season. ROB AND TRACEY NEWMAN, SAY THANK YOU
Owners of Newman Carpets and Flooring, Rob and Tracey Newman, based in Church Street will be moving to Scotland to share time with their young family Nicky, Karl and grandson Kai.
The business was started 32 years ago and has refloored many properties in and around Tewkesbury. Tracey tells the story.
“Rob started in the flooring trade when he was 24, in 1982. He learnt the trade and then took the risk to go self-employed and built it into a business. His hard work, skill, knowledge and determination are what have driven our business to become the success it is today. He has mentored several apprentices over the years, and passed on valuable knowledge to the next generation of tradesmen. It has been trying at times to work as a husband and wife team, but ultimately our skills complement each other and we have been able to achieve something we are both very proud of.
“Rob sat in the shop for the first 3 weeks thinking we’d made a mistake. Then we started to get a few jobs so I started working in the shop with Nicola as a baby while Teresia was at school. Nicky spent her formative years in the shop. Many people
remember her sleeping on her chosen carpet sample, reading her books and, as she got a little older, showing carpet samples. There has also been a dog or too asleep under the desk at times!
“We’ve worked hard and tried our best for our customers over the years. We have always believed in good service, value for money and having a personal touch. Tewkesbury is very much a our home and word-of-mouth recommendation is the best way for a business to survive and thrive. We have been lucky to have good support from
our fitters over the years. Over recent years Stuart and Dale have worked very hard to provide a quality service and always go the extra mile for our customers. We couldn’t have done without them.
“We’d also like to introduce Francis Of Malvern for all our customers flooring needs, as we believe they have the same values and attention to detail we would wish for them.”
Francis of Malvern have a super introductory offer to GL20 residents of 20% discount, this month on carpets and flooring, see the offer on page 11.

As we welcomed our speaker Paul Barnett we looked forward to another of his absorbing talks, we were not disappointed.
He was to recount his journey of more than 7,237 miles from Gloucester to Santiago, Chile before reaching his final destination of Easter Island, home to the Rapa Nui people. This island is now a UNESCO heritage site although there has been many ‘invasions’ over the years from different explorers to cruise ships the Rapa Nui people now have a very strict ‘code of conduct’ for anybody visiting the island. It was fascinating learning about the Moai monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people, they are all male figures carved without legs, although there is one with legs and that is a woman!!!!
It really was an enlightening talk, although not sure it inspired any of members to go there, no beaches and the island is surrounded by shark infested waters.

WHY SHOULD YOU WARM UP/COOL DOWN
It is tempting isn’t it?! To put your trainers on, grab those weights, don your swimming cap or arm yourself with your tennis racket and off you go! They do say “start as you mean to go on” and “hit the ground running” after all! But did you know this can actually be detrimental to your musculoskeletal system and may result in injury or even cause you problems in later life. We all know we SHOULD warm up and cool down again but do you know WHY this is so important and HOW this effects your body?
Warming up muscles properly is important to prevent strains and in-
juries. When you begin to move, your heart rate slowly increases and blood vessels that supply your muscles begin to dilate, allowing more blood to reach them. This is important as when muscles begin to work harder they require more oxygen and nutrients in order to function properly. This increase
er warm up. Most big joints in the body contain synovial fluid. This fluid lubricates the joint and also acts somewhat like a cushion, protecting the cartilage in the joint. This synovial fluid also takes time to get moving and circulating and thus not warming up properly can lead to unnecessary wear and tear on the cartilage, resulting in osteoarthritis.
Additionally warming up has been shown to improve neuromuscular reaction speed which helps prevent injuries by stabilising the joint more effectively.
Exactly how you warm up will be different depending on your own fitness and sporting activity. About 10 minutes is sufficient for most people but if you are a bit stiffer or have been sitting still all day, 15 minutes or more may suit you better.
in blood flow along with the heat produced by the muscles working away also physically heats them up, makes them softer and more supple. This also applies to the ligaments and tendons. This is easily demonstrated with an elastic band. If you stick an elastic band in the fridge and then take it out and pull on it hard, it will feel quite stiff and may even snap. Now if you warm it up in your hands and stretch it gently a few times and THEN pull on it again, it’ll feel a lot more stretchy and, errr, elastic!!! It has been warmed up, just like your muscles. If you don’t warm your muscles up properly, some of the hundreds of tiny muscles fibres can begin to snap just like the elastic band (a muscle strain!).
The joints themselves also benefit from a prop-
Cooling off is equally as important. Your body needs time to gently cool down not only physically, but also to slow the heart and breathing rate as well. When muscles have been working hard they produce waste substances which is transported away in the blood. This is why slowly cooling down is important to ensure all these processes slow down together. Again, everyone’s cool down will look different but about 10 minutes of gently walking and stretching is usually sufficient.

Tall Tales & Buried Treasure? More Museum Talks
Tewkesbury Museum remains closed, but the scaffolding is gone and we are making good progress on the internal works. Meanwhile, our Spring talks programme concludes with two events this April.
On Tuesday 2nd, Tewkesbury Direct favourite Steve Goodchild will forsake alleys and pubs to look at the “Folklore Around the Battle of Tewkesbury”. Old soldiers’ tales are nothing new. Almost as soon as the battle was over, stories grew around what happened. The ordinary became heroic, mis-fortunate became divine judgement. The everyday was exaggerated, and the significant was overlooked, possibly to support a political position, or just to improve a tale. Steve has researched battle folklore for a book he is writing, and will try to separate what happened in 1471 from later additions and inventions, some of which are still in circulation today.
A fortnight later, on 16th April, Nicola Potter will also be trying to separate the signal from the noise. In her case with a metal detector. Presenting “Metal Detecting in Gloucestershire” Nicola, Chair of the Cotswold Heritage & Detection Society” will explain the fast-expanding hobby of metal detecting. Once derided as treasure hunting, archaeologists now wel-

Hello, I’m Kate, let me help you find your smile again…
If your weight and the prospect of warmer weather fills you with dread because of the prospect of needing to take a layer of clothing off; baring your arms in a short sleeved top or generally feeling uncomfortable during the summer months; if you’ve found yourself turning down social invitations because that ‘one’ outfit will need to come out again or if you dodge
the camera as much as possible and then secretly delete photographs afterwards – let me help you lose your weight once and for all.
I was guilty of all of the above, I was constantly monitoring the weather forecast, really hoping for cool weather – even in the height of summer, so I know how it feels. As for photographs, it was as though I never went to anywhere or to anything!
The 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan is a plan that really works for ‘you’ with options of the plan to suit any lifestyle. With a choice of over 35 meals (and the majority aren’t a shake!), you’ll never get bored, and they’re delivered directly to your door.
The Plan and the products were used successfully in the largest ever multi-national study of diabetes prevention – it’s no fad diet,
it just really works!
Add into that me as your personal cheerer-oner, at the end of the phone or a text/ whatsapp message –we’ll get you to where you want to be and then together we’ll take care of keeping you there and
that’s what we all want; looking forward to the summer weather; accepting all of your social invitations and being front of centre in those photographs.
Get in touch and let’s get you started, Kate

Its life was generally unremarkable, and its early history unrecorded. It probably became a beer house in the days when local magistrates didn’t manage beerhouse licences.
The first record of a landlord comes from the census of 1881; John Lloyd Stinton, but he’s unlikely to have been the first. He was a retired racehorse trainer of some repute, but in 1882 he suffered a stroke and lay paralysed in the pub, unable to work and des-
titute. He died in June 1883.
His successor was Thomas Webb, described as a beer-seller and stocking weaver. He had the ignominy of twice, in 1902 and 1904, being the only Tewkesbury landlord named by the police at the annual licencing meeting. His crime was being found guilty of permitting drunkenness.
After the second occasion the owners, Flower and Sons, ended his tenancy (he was 76 years
m
old). Richard Clifton became landlord, but only until 1908 when Daniel Dones took over. He ran the pub until 1917, when the magistrates, intent on reducing the number of small beerhouses, removed its licence under the terms of the Licencing (Consolidation) Act 1910.
Mr Dones and Flowers were compensated, the pub was closed and sold for £150, to become a shop as it has remained until today, though now amalgamated with No 56.
In 1909, William Glover, of Hillend, was fined six shillings for parking his horse and trap in the street and popping in for a pint. There was no parking outside in those days!
The saddest event in the pub’s short life, though, was the mysterious disappearance of Mrs Wagstaff, of Twyning. On Saturday 28 December 1902 she’d come into Tewkesbury to do her shopping then gone to the Teddington to wait for her husband, who worked at Healing’s Mill. They said that she became agitated, jumped up and left without explanation.
Joseph Turner spoke to her near the Crown at Shuthonger but she wasn’t seen again. Her basket was found near the Fleet Inn at Twyning, and after a search of the river her body was found. The coroner recorded an open verdict of ‘found drowned’.

Tewkesbury Historical Society publishes its 33rd Volume of Research!
We are delighted to reveal the research of Joanne Raywood on the important history of Healings Mill in our latest publication, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.
Joanne’s feature on Healings Mill, which languishes in the town, is in the society’s 33rd bulletin. It is illustrated by local photographer Colin Davidson. Also in this new edition, Derek Benson has focused on the history of the Quakers, who were wealthy tanners, yet were prosecuted for failing to pay church rates until 1829.
They bequeathed us their temple, which today is our Watson Hall.
John Dixon has explained how our esteemed first West Indian immigrant, Harold Kirton, found that ‘Emancipation of Slavery’ led to poverty in Barbados and caused him to seek a solution in the British Merchant Navy
He also explains the family history of our own John Moore.
Sam Eedle has followed up the story of a
local forger, who found herself transported to Australia.
The passing of thirtythree years has also witnessed the sad loss of three of our members: former chairman Roxy Base, prolific writer Janet Devereux and volunteer Jane Blackledge.
A copy of this Bulletin is now available from Alison’s esteemed local bookshop in the High Street and via the website www.tewkesburyhistory.org

I’ve fielded a few questions recently about everything from how to stop Mothering Sunday presents from dying (houseplants and spring bedding), how to improve a vil-
lage football pitch and how to get the best from a Camellia
We’re having a protracted spring which I’m using to my advantage to get spring work done methodically, rather than being forced to do it all at once as temperatures increase.
I actually got 99% of my potting-on done a few weeks ago, as the weather first started warming in January(!).
On the list were the ericaceous plants – those that hate substrate with a high ph - so prefer
acidic soil.
The UK Soil Observatory website (hosted by the British Geological Survey) will tell you what your local soil type is and the pH, besides lots of other information if you really want to geek out.
Not many of us in this area have particularly acidic soil and in the Cotswolds it may be positively alkaline.
What does that mean for a gardener? It means the Ericaceae family of plants, like Rhododendron, Pieris, Azalea.
Camellia etc won’t last long if planted straight into the ground because they can’t access the nutrition they need.
Environmental pollution is increasing the overall acidity of UK soils, but not to the extent that there is a silver lining on that dark cloud. Years ago, gardeners would try to alter the pH of their soil, but it required a lot of effort and the effects were short-lived.
People still attempt it on a smaller scale, called pit-planting, but the local environment has such a bearing on soil type, that you will be disappointed if you try it.
The best thing you
can do for ericaceous plants (except heathers) is keep them in pots. They’ll need planting into ericaceous substrate and feeding with specialist fertiliser to maintain the low pH if you want to keep them healthy.
Remember that ericaceous plants also tend to hail from tree covered landscapes, so they’ll prefer moist soil and some shade too.
Do the above and your Camellias and their cousins should flourish.

TADS triumph again in play festival
TADS (Tewkesbury Arts and Drama Society) scored a dramatic success in the Worcestershire Theatre Festival, held in the Norbury Theatre in Droitwich on March 2nd and 3rd, winning five trophies, including Overall Festival Winner. This is the second year running that TADS have won the Worcestershire Festival.
Their play this time, Once this was a poet, was written by TADS member Brenda Read-Brown, who also directed. “This is a really difficult play to perform,” Brenda said, “and I couldn’t have directed it without a brilliant and talented cast and crew. I feel very privileged to have had such a great group of people to work with. They did an amazing
job in bringing the play to life.”
Other trophies won by Once this was a poet were:
•Best Play
•Best Actor –Gregory Aston
•Best Actress –Katie Preedy
•Adjudicator’s Award
–for Paul Sawtell’s sounds
Brenda was also nominated for Best Director, and for the Adjudicator’s Award for the play as a whole.
TADS will now take Once this was a poet through to the semi-final of the All England Theatre Festival, which will take place on 4th and 5th May, in Stoke-onTrent.
And meanwhile, TADS are busy rehearsing their next major production, Amadeus, which will be presented in The Roses Theatre on 8th and 9th June. Watch this space!

TAKING FLIGHT AT PROBUS CLUB
In recent weeks Tewkesbury and Bredon Hill Probus Club have enjoyed three talks about aviation and flight in general.
The first of these was from Sally Ferrers who presents a series of separate talks on the history of aviation and her first was about the very early years of flight and the different types of planes that flew in World War One.
She described how the intrepid pilots managed to fly the very rudimentary flying machines in very dangerous situations and how the aircraft designs were so basic that in order to drop bombs, pilots would literally pick them up and throw them out of the cockpit.
Our second venture into the air came from Rob Cuckow from Cirencester on the subject of microlight aircraft in which he gave us a history of these light
planes and some of his own microlighting adventures, including a graphic description of when he crashed in Marseille on a microlighting holiday, fortunately without serious injury. Still on the subject of flight I suppose the subject of beekeeping qualifies. Brian Miller-Hall gave us a detailed insight into his hobby of beekeeping bringing along a traditional fullsized beehive which he dismantled to explain the purpose of each of its components.
He explained the roles of drones, worker bees and the queen and how the bee colony has a ruthless approach to living in a hive, ejecting and killing those members of the colony whose work was done and
whose active support of the colony was at an end. Rather surprisingly, despite his obvious love for the hobby, Brian revealed that actually he didn’t like honey!
If you are a retired professional or businessman looking for something new to stimulate your retirement in a social environment, you would be very welcome to join us as a guest at one of our Tuesday morning meetings.

Cheltenham Choirs Unite: A Concert of Haydn’s Theresienmesse and Mozart’s Requiem on May 25th!
On Saturday 25th May, the joint forces of the Cheltenham and the Charlton Kings Choral Societies, both being Cheltenham choirs, present two fine concert celebrations of the Liturgical Mass conducted by their respective directors of music, Thomas Mottershead and John Wright. Tickets at £25.00, with under-25yrs students at £10.00, will be available soon from the two websites, www. ckcsonline.org.uk/concerts/ and www.cheltchoral.org/whatson
The concert opens with Haydn’s Theresienmesse. Premiered in 1799, it is nicknamed for Maria Theresa of the Two Sicilies, consort of the Emperor Francis 2nd, the last Holy Roman Emperor. Empress Maria was herself a fine soprano soloist.
Mozart’s Requiem, incomplete at his death in 1791, was completed initially by Süssmayr from the composer’s sketches and notes. This is the version to be sung at Tewkesbury, although there are alternative completions.
Both works are scored for four soloists, choir and orchestra.
The pairing of masses in this concert is charmingly apposite since Mozart’s Requiem was performed at Haydn’s funeral on 31st May 1809.
THE COTSWOLD HALT

26 miles up-river from Tewkesbury, the attractive market town of Evesham is our destination for this month’s walk, writes Jack B. Walker.
This is an easy flat route, which follows part of the course of the River Avon, as it bends around the town.
Please note the walk should not be attempted when flood warnings are in place, and the riverside paths and meadows can be muddy at times.
Our walk starts from Merstow Green car park, near the Almonry Museum (well worth a visit) on the edge of the town centre. Evesham, 13 miles from Tewkesbury by road, is also accessible by the 540 bus route (operational day times Mondays to Saturday).
From the car park, with the entrance to Waitrose on your right, head down Boat Lane to Hampton Ferry.
Here there is a café by the historic rope-hauled ferry, which dates back some 800 years. It was established by the monks from Evesham Abbey in order to reach their lands at Hampton across the Avon. On arriving at the ferry bear right (1) and carry on along the towpath with the river on your left.
The path meets a tarmac drive coming down from the right. Carry on along this, passing the cricket ground, rugby and bowls clubs on your right.
After the first rugby pitch bear right (2) and follow the path upwards, emerging into an industrial estate. Turn right (3) to join Briar Close just before its junction with Rudge Road. Cross over, walk ahead until you reach Queens Road (4) and turn left into it. Walk on until you reach the busy High Street.
Turn right along the High Street (5), crossing over when possible and continue down the broad road, where the town’s market is now held.
Cross over pedestrianised Bridge Street to enter the cobbled Market Square. The historic Round House on your right is currently undergoing renovation. Also on your right is the Town Hall.
Keep ahead to pass through the Abbey Gateway and bear left (6) between the two
churches to pass beneath the Bell Tower and into Abbey Park.
The Bell Tower is one of the few surviving buildings from the once mighty Abbey of Evesham. It was built in the first quarter of the 16th century by the Abbot Clement Lichfield.
This splendid Grade 1 listed building was restored in the 1950s, with further work being completed about ten years ago, thanks to public donations.
Walk down to the river, and bear right (7) along the tree-lined riverside walk, with the Avon on your left. This is Crown Meadow, where many events and festivals take place throughout the year. There is also a children’s playground, and sometimes fairground rides too.
Walk under the road bridge (8) and continue along the tow path to return to Hampton Ferry, then back up Boat Lane to Merstow Green.
