STUDENT STORY

Before starting tutoring, fifth grader Donovan showed little to no interest in reading. However, since beginning tutoring, Donovan has developed a great relationship with his tutor, Bob, and has gained newfound enthusiasm for reading. Bob’s friendship and dedication have greatly contributed to Donovan’s progress in reading and writing. One of Donovan’s goals this year was to become a confident reader, regardless of any challenges he may

face while learning new skills. A favorite activity during Donovan and Bob’s tutoring sessions is a word sort game called “Fly Swatter.” This game has helped Donovan learn new sight words by writing them on the whiteboard and swatting them as quickly as possible. Thanks to Bob’s dedication and positive influence, Donovan has become more confident in his academic abilities during his tutoring sessions.

Dilan loves his tutor Dylan. When he first met him, he told me that he had the best tutor in the world. He has been so lucky to have his tutor for the last few years, and I have seen how they have grown their relationship.

IMAGINATION LIBRARY

At home reading is critical to literacy development and lifelong success. TLC serves as the access point for families with children from birth to four years of age to enroll in and receive free books through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program. Families can enroll online at tetonliteracy.org or through the Imagination Library website. All families in our community are welcome to enroll in this free program. This partnership with the Imagination Library is funded through the generous support of the Nelson Schwab Family Foundation.

The ability to constantly receive new books has had a great impact on my children. They get excited every time we let them know that a new book has arrived. Thanks to what we have learned as parents [at TLC], our children really enjoy books, and we enjoy reading a lot as a family. We are very grateful to TLC, for all the support they provide and for providing this incredible partnership. Thank you for including us in this incredible opportunity, Imagination Library is truly unique. ”

TLC gives students an opportunity for an extended school day! Every student I have ever had that has gone to TLC has improved!

Summer SOAR 2023

TLC recognizes the critical opportunity that summer provides for students, thus we have worked to develop a comprehensive summer program with various opportunities. We have expanded our summer efforts to serve Pre-K through 11th grade students. The SOAR program is the core of TLC’s summer, providing an intensive math and literacy program for exiting K-7th grade students for eight weeks.

In addition to SOAR, TLC also offers tutoring and Practice Kindergarten programs during summer months.

By the Numbers: Summer Totals:

Students: 174

SOAR (1st-8th Grade):

Students: 89

95% of Funding Futures students come to TLC weekly for programs.

Funding Futures

Funding Futures is the first Childhood Savings Account (CSA) program in Wyoming and is intended to address barriers to lifelong learning. Modeled after other successful CSA programs, Funding Futures participants open and contribute to an individual savings account while TLC provides each participant with seed money, matches and bonuses in a 529 account. TLC’s Funding Futures program aims to shift student and family expectations, increase academic performance, ensure long-term TLC retention and provide financial literacy and empowerment.

The core goals of the Funding Futures program are to:

• Start early to foster student and family expectations and aspirations aiming toward post-secondary education and career training.

• Help students be college and career ready with a long-term approach to academic engagement and self-confidence.

• Build student and family financial potential through TLC programs and connecting with partners to offer other related services.

I know that Funding Futures has and will have a great impact on our lives. It truly focuses on our children’s future and ensures they have fewer financial obstacles on the path to their dreams.

By extending college and career program efforts alongside a CSA tool, the Funding Futures pilot aligns with national research illustrating that students with a savings account are seven times more likely to attend post-secondary education than those without an account. This is true regardless of families’ income, race or educational attainment. A low- and moderate-income child who has school savings of under $500 prior to reaching college age is over 3X more likely to enroll in college and 4X more likely to graduate from college than a child with no savings account.

Volunteer of the Year:

ROBIN KEELER

TLC is thrilled to announce this year’s Volunteer of the Year recipient is Robin Keeler. Robin has been volunteering with Teton Literacy Center since 2019, and has had a hand in every program from literacy tutoring to events to adult ESL! Her commitment is unwavering as she not only serves as a weekly one-on-one literacy tutor, but she also leads a weekly adult ESL group. As an ESL volunteer leading a beginning group of English language learners, Robin consistently embraces the vulnerability in learning a new language by attempting to learn Spanish, a new language for her. Not only has this boosted students’ understanding during the lesson, but also established a beautiful sense of trust and rapport among her group. As a literacy tutor, Robin has been matched with some of

TLC’s highest need students over the years, and she manages to foster a genuine relationship with them centered in an enthusiasm for reading, no matter how resistant a student may initially be to literacy.

On top of those weekly commitments, she is always willing to step in as a sub when another volunteer is out. All of which means she is a regular face in our center and we couldn’t be happier to have her!

We are delighted to honor Robin with this award. Though we often say it, it remains true that serving over 350 families would be impossible without our robust team of dedicated volunteers. Like Robin, all of our volunteers make a lasting impact on the students they support and the Teton County community as a whole!

Last year, TLC began the tradition of honoring a high school student who has transitioned from being a TLC student, to a TLC volunteer. As many of our students get older, there has been a huge increase in the number of high school students volunteering as tutors. We believe that these students are the next generation of TLC, and are thrilled to honor one outstanding volunteer with this award.

This year’s Next Generation Award recipient is none other than Dylan Campuzano-Olivares! Dylan has been a huge part of TLC for the last eight years. Throughout elementary and middle school, Dylan was involved in afterschool clubs and tutoring as a student. Now in high school, Dylan has taken on a bigger role at TLC and has been volunteering as a tutor twice a week for the last two years. As a tutor, Dylan goes above and beyond in making sure that each student feels confident and supported in their learning. He always makes an effort to understand each student on a personal level, and has created meaningful relationships throughout his time volunteering. He is not only a tutor to these students, but a role model and friend.

It is incredibly rewarding to see our older students take on leadership roles at TLC. We are eagerly anticipating the amazing things they will achieve in the future!

Thank You Volunteers

Our volunteers motivate, encourage, and support students and families with reading and writing development. They instill a love of learning in our students of all ages. TLC volunteers are instrumental to the success of TLC and our students. Thank you!
