Connecting Through the Power of Literacy

2022-23 ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends of Teton Literacy Center,

As we reflect on the success of the past year, I am overwhelmed by the hard work of our staff, students, families, and volunteers. Countless hours of thoughtful planning and implementation, thousands of pages read and discussed, hundreds of sharpened pencils, and infinite smiles. This work is powerful.

I’d love to say it is easy. But you all know that it is not. It takes time, dedication, perseverance, and strength. The faces of TLC, they have that grit. They are putting in the work. And for that, I am beyond grateful. I’m also grateful for each of you who make this work possible. We are able to dig in each day because you recognize a need and are willing to put your resources towards this work.

THANK YOU!

I hope you enjoy celebrating these successes with us. And please come by soon to see the programs in action.

Enjoy our 2022-23 Annual Report and make sure to check out a few highlights:

of 129 tutoring students also participated in our afterschool clubs and/or summer SOAR program. When reviewing our afterschool programs holistically, we had students receiving up to four days of TLC afterschool support.

This past year, Lydia, a second grader in TLC’s tutoring program developed a taste for mystery. As she finished the thirteenth session with her beloved tutor, Sarah, Lydia clutched her third mystery volume in a month, The Unlucky Number, promising to bring it back the next week. The dynamic pair, who bonded quickly over a love of reading, set the bar high in early March when they decided that Lydia would complete her first chapter book by the end of Spring Break. That chapter book, The Secret Staircase, was Lydia’s first

step in what we hope is a lifelong love affair with the world of books. According to Lydia, Sarah’s enthusiasm and patience “make reading fun!” Indeed, every week at the end of the session, her little face was bright and flushed with a book in her hand. She grinned and said how confident she felt now that she had accomplished her goal. Lydia made 12 months of growth in 7 months of tutoring. We are so excited to see how she has grown!

I believe that TLC supports students’ growth through their relationship building with the students, providing them targeted help in the area they need it, and they look at the whole child (growth mindset, confidence, social-emotional).

LIT LAB PRESCHOOL, PARENT EDUCATION AND IMAGINATION LIBRARY

Teton Literacy Center’s partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library provides free, high-quality books for young children in our community. The missions of both organizations passionately focus on literacy and access to books. The Imagination Library partners with local affiliates, like TLC, to mail free books each month to children all over the world, in Spanish and English. Families can enroll online at tetonliteracy.org or through the Imagination Library website. Families can also come to TLC to complete a paper

registration form. All families in our community are welcome to enroll in this free program.

TLC works with community partners to promote this opportunity to families with young children. In collaboration with St. John’s Health, newborn babies will receive a new book and information on how to enroll in the program when they leave the hospital.

This partnership with the Imagination Library is funded through the generous support of the Nelson Schwab Family Foundation.

It is very exciting for my daughter to know there are many stories and adventures to discover through reading. She gets so motivated and excited to read everytime we receive a her new monthly package full of books!”

FAMILY FOCUS

Cheila and her son, Bryan, have been coming to TLC for six years since her son began preschool at TLC. Upon beginning at TLC, Cheila was at our lowest English language level, unable to speak or understand anything in English. She worked in a local businesses and often expressed her frustration on not being able to understand her manager or her child’s teachers. In her spare time, Cheila continued to diligently practice her English language skills, and slowly increased.

Through the support of our extensive Parent Education programming she was able to learn how to create her first business plan, resign from her past employment and last March, began her own housekeeping business. Today, Cheila is at our highest English language level, attending both ESL and our Language Exchange program and attending every Parent Education class she can fit into her busy schedule. Bryan, her son, looks forward to our SOAR summer program, our afterschool clubs and tutoring every year.

TLC has been an enormous support for me and my family - I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without them, and I truly feel they are there in anything my family or I need in order to not just learn, but reach for the stars.”

After launching a collaborative pilot program in the spring of 2022, TLC successfully continued working with Teton County School District and Jackson Hole Children’s Museum to expand the reach and depth of our joint afterschool Enrichment clubs. Teachers and staff from all three organizations have worked closely to further align our afterschool clubs to students’ schoolday learning while integrating socialemotional learning, critical thinking and creativity through engaging Project-Based Learning activities.

Additionally, through collaboration with Teton County School District’s transportation department, we were able to offer an evening bus from Munger

Mountain Elementary School to Colter Elementary School for our highest needs afterschool club students. Throughout all three club sessions, TLC filled 100% of the allocated spaces on the evening bus and still had a waitlist each season. Upon calculating the approximate dollars saved in gas mileage, we estimate the evening bus option saved families a total of $17,295.

Overall, these collaborative efforts allowed TLC to serve more students in our afterschool clubs this year than we have in any previous year.

TLC provides another opportunity outside of school for students to meet new people, build their confidence and build upon their academic and social skills. This all sets them up for success.

Summer SOAR 2022

TLC recognizes the critical opportunity that summer provides for students, thus we have worked to develop a comprehensive summer program with various opportunities. We have expanded our summer efforts to serve Pre-K through 11th grade students. The SOAR program is the core of TLC’s summer, providing an intensive math and literacy program for exiting K-7th grade students for eight weeks.

In addition to SOAR, TLC also offers tutoring and Practice Kindergarten programs during summer months.

By the Numbers:

Summer Totals:

Students:174

Hours:13,691

SOAR:

174 STUDENTS ATTENDED TLC programs and 13,691 hours of instruction were provided during summer 2022, the most in SOAR history!

SOAR at TLC students illustrated an average of 4.34 months growth in reading and math during the summer, as compared to the two to three-month skill loss that students face without access to summer learning opportunities nationally.

Student Story

Thatcher has been attending our TLC summer programs since 2020. At the beginning of our SOAR eightweek program, Thatcher needed a lot of teacher encouragement in completing reading or math class assignments, would often be seen

“shutting down” and lacked confidence in math. Excitingly, Thatcher returned to SOAR in 2022 and over those eight weeks, Thatcher managed to make seventeen months of growth in math, and four months of growth in reading! He ended last summer 3 months ahead of grade level 1.Thatcher truly thrived in the program, standing out as a class leader and consistently diving into challenges that allowed him to be (and feel) successful.

Funding Futures

$45,326+

SAVED for post secondary success.

Funding Futures, a two-year pilot program in its second year at TLC, is the first Childhood Savings Account (CSA) program in Wyoming and is intended to address barriers to lifelong learning. Modeled after other successful CSA programs, Funding Futures participants open and contribute to an individual savings account while TLC provides each participant with seed money, matches and bonuses in a 529 account.TLC’s Funding Futures program aims to shift student and family expectations, increase academic performance, ensure long-term TLC retention and provide financial literacy and empowerment.

Family Story

The core goals of the Funding Futures program are to:

• Start early to foster student and family expectations and aspirations aiming toward postsecondary education and career training.

• Help students be college and career ready with a long-term approach to academic engagement and selfconfidence.

• Build student and family financial potential through TLC programs and connecting with partners to offer other related services.

Funding Futures has given me a sense of security and ease when it comes to preparing for my son’s future. It helps us and my child learn how to save and make sure we are using those savings for something important in his life.”

Marlen and Aretzy joined our Funding Futures program during our first pilot year while Aretzy was enrolled in our preschool Literacy Lab program. During the first year, Marlen was able to save $1,650 for Aretzy’s future education. By the end of her second year participating in Funding Futures, Marlen saved $2,450 in Aretzy’s saving account! They became one of our highest saving families, and Marlen was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for her efforts. As Marlen stated, “Funding Futures was very helpful in getting me started on the first step of creating my daughter’s savings account. I know I should have done it earlier, but I’m glad this initiative exists through TLC, because I know that in the future it will help Aretzy in college and beyond.” Today, every time Aretzy finds a coin or bills, she is motivated to put it in her piggy bank that TLC provided. Her goal each time is to fill her piggy bank and then, Marlen and Artezy go to the bank to deposit the funds when it is full. Today, Marlen is our Funding Futures Parent Champion, and supports any new families enrolling into the program with general questions about Funding Futures.

Volunteer of the Year:

LYNN WEGNER

We are thrilled to announce the 2023 Volunteer of the Year, Ms. Lynn Wegner! Lynn has been a supporter of TLC for over 25 years, yet her enthusiasm only seems to grow.

For the last several years, Lynn has been working with one of our brightest, spunkiest middle school students, Valeria. Knowing that Valeria does not typically love all things literacy, Lynn took a new approach this year and focused on one expansive project that sparked Valeria’s interest. Through a series of essays and short stories, Valeria wrote about where she comes from, who she is right now as a 7th grader and where she wants to go. This has led to quite a few fun revelations, such as her aspirations to be a veterinarian in Mexico and then retire from her practice at 50 and go to cosmetology school. Moreover, it has evolved into a beautiful documentary of how Valeria sees the world, and how she sees herself contributing to positive change.

As a tutor, Lynn does so much more than help Valeria with academics. Middle school can be

an incredibly challenging time for kids as they navigate new social dynamics and rapid changes, but Lynn has been a constant rock of support and optimism. This has not only led to an increase in confidence and selfawareness, but massive growth in Valeria’s reading skills and grades. Even more impressive, the staff have noticed a dramatic change in Valeria’s attitude towards learning, and that is all thanks to Lynn!

This past year, Lynn has also acted as a mentor to many of the staff, providing encouragement and wisdom acquired over her decades working as a teacher in the classroom. She has donated technology and strollers to give to families in need, and brought treats for volunteer workshops. She even put together beautiful prize baskets for the winners of TLC’s first ever Story Slam!

We say this often, but we truly would not be able to support over 350 families without our team of dedicated volunteers. All of our volunteers, similar to Lynn, are having lasting impacts on the students they work with, and the community at large!

Next Generation Award:

For the last several years,TLC has seen a huge increase in the number of high school students volunteering as tutors and afterschool teaching assistants. This year, we wanted to begin a new tradition of honoring one of these students who we believe to be the next generation of TLC. Recipients of this award are recognized for having made a significant impact throughout their time volunteering at TLC.

After an anonymous vote by the staff, this year’s recipient is none other than Lupe Garcia! Lupe is a long time TLC student, and as she has gotten older, she has continued to step into a larger leadership role. Lupe has worked for the past two summers as a teaching assistant and Rising Educator in the summer SOAR and Practice Kindergarten programs. She also began volunteering as a tutor last winter, working with not only one, but often two students at a time!

It is such a joy watching our older students become involved as leaders at TLC. We simply cannot wait to see what they go on to do next!
