100% of volunteers have enjoyed their volunteer experience at TLC and 100% would recommend volunteering to a friend.

92 of 129 tutoring students also participated in our afterschool clubs and/or summer SOAR program. When reviewing our afterschool programs holistically, we had students receiving up to four days of TLC afterschool support.

This past year, Lydia, a second grader in TLC’s tutoring program developed a taste for mystery. As she finished the thirteenth session with her beloved tutor, Sarah, Lydia clutched her third mystery volume in a month, The Unlucky Number, promising to bring it back the next week. The dynamic pair, who bonded quickly over a love of reading, set the bar high in early March when they decided that Lydia would complete her first chapter book by the end of Spring Break. That chapter book, The Secret Staircase, was Lydia’s first step in what we hope is a lifelong love affair with the world of books. According to Lydia, Sarah’s enthusiasm and patience “make reading fun!” Indeed, every week at the end of the session, her little face was bright and flushed with a book in her hand. She grinned and said how confident she felt now that she had accomplished her goal. Lydia made 12 months of growth in 7 months of tutoring.We are so excited to see how she has grown!

I believe that TLC supports students’ growth through their relationship building with the students, providing them targeted help in the area they need it, and they look at the whole child (growth mindset, confidence, social-emotional).
