President’s Welcome 2025 Historic Sandown

Welcome one and all to Historic Sandown 2025

This is the “Thirty Third Year” of this event promoted by the VHRR. It is great to see so many people taking part in the true spirit of Historic Racing at Sandown.

This year sees an entry of some 260 plus cars represented in many historic categories. There will be some very exciting racing in all groups over the weekend, and also some great cars on display on the concourse, in the public areas surrounding the pits.

On behalf of VHRR I extend a warm welcome to all of the competitors, and particularly those who have come from interstate, to support this meeting. It is fantastic to see so many of you make such an effort to come to Sandown.

I am certain we will see many fantastic events over the weekend. I wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend of Historic Motor Racing.

I also want to extend special thanks to all of the volunteer officials who have supported this meeting, including those from VHRR, MG Car Club, Vic Flag Marshalls, Vic Scrutineers, Fire and Rescue, and Medical response. Particular thanks to our long serving Clerk of Course, David Vernall and his very experienced team in Race Control. Thanks also to Melbourne Racing Club for the magnificent presentation of the Sandown venue for our event

A big thank you to our very loyal Major Sponsors, COOLDRIVE, PENRITE, Shannons and Equity One and all the other sponsors who have advertised with us in the program, or who have set up a trade stand at this event. Please take the time to look at all the trade stands and support the sponsors that support Historic Racing. Without our sponsors we simply would not be able to run such great events.

Enjoy your weekend

In 2025 Historic Sandown will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Tourist Trophy event held at Melbourne’s Albert Park motor racing circuit, one week before the Australian Grand Prix. Known as the Moomba TT, the 1955 Tourist Trophy, which commenced with the classic Le Mans start, was won by Doug Whiteford in his Triumph TR2, with Austin Healeys of Haugh Hurst and L.E. Brotherton dueling for second and third places.

Invited Sports Cars

The Toron was built between 1962-1963 by Kerry Luckins in his home garage, with assistance from his brother Garnet Luckins, and supercharging specialist Ross Stewart. Featuring a spaceframe chassis, fiberglass front clip, aluminium tail section, magnesium gearbox, uprights and wheels with inboard rear brakes the car is powered by a ‘blown’ Hillman 1500.

Much of the car was fabricated whilst Kerry worked as the General Manager of ‘Paul England Engineering’ and the

patterns for casting of wheels, uprights and rear hub carriers were fabricated by Garnet during wood-work at high school. The car ran from 1963-1968 in local Victorian hill climb and circuit races, and was retired to Kerry’s garden for nearly 40 years, before being retrieved by his nephew Soren Luckins in 2005 and over a decade restored back to original condition with the expertise of Greg Smith.

Mark Goldsmith 1966 ELFIN 400

1966 ELFIN 400 Ford Cobra #BB661 Elfin’s first large sports car was the Type 400 of which just four were built, each with a different motor. 1966 number 1 Ford Cobra V8, Noel Hurd. 1966 number 2 Traco-Oldsmobile V8, Frank Matich, the first to race on a track. 1967 number 3 Repco – Brabham V8, Bob Jane ( the first fitment to a non- Jack Brabham car ) 1968 number 4 Chevrolet V8, Andy Buchanan NZ The 400 was very successful especially in the hands of Frank Matich who proved unbeatable in 1966 winning the Australia Sports Car Championship The Elfin Company Elfin was established in 1959 by Garrie Cooper in Adelaide and dominated Australian open wheeler and sports car racing, winning 29 national titles between 1962 and 1978. Cooper and his small team built 248 cars in 27 models from Formula Vee to Formula 5000. He never received the recognition he deserved and died at just 46 in 1982. Elfin eventually moved to Melbourne and in 1997 Bill Hemming and Nick Kovatch bought the business and specialised in Clubmans of which he delivered 70 kit and completed cars. Later he developed the GMH V8 powered MS8 Clubman and Stream- liner. In 2006 Walkinshaw Racing bought Elfin and Bill established the Elfin Heritage Centre.

This vehicle It was initially fitted with a 4700cc (289ci) Ford Cobra V8 but quickly upgraded to 5000cc. Accessorised with a Shelby Cobra inlet manifold, 4 X 48 IDA WEBER carburettors, and a Hewland LG 500 Transaxle. This car # BB661 whilst was the first car started, was completed after the Frank Matich car, #BB662. It was delivered to

Globe Products owner, Dick Bassett for Noel Hurd to drive. This car was also used as a running test bed for a prototype Quad Cam Ford racing engine that Globe were developing largely driven by engineering wizard Kevin Drage.

Motorsport rule changes put an end to this engine development. Keith Rilestone took the drivers position in the car that had now had a shorter nose. After a year the car was sold to successful Adelaidean racer, Stan Keen who had great success in racing and also broke the Collingrove outright record in 1972 of 32.40secs. In the same year Tasmanian Max Thompson campaigned the car predominantly on the Isle where it underwent further body changes. After a major accident the car was sold locally to Bert Howard who returned it to the Elfin Factory for repair.

Whilst there Garrie Cooper upgraded body pontoons and chassis to the 80’s style. Competition was confined to Tasmania but it did return to SA to compete in a support event at F1 Grand Prix in 1992 In 2014 Mark Goldsmith purchased it and returned it to Adelaide. Over the next 4 years it underwent a complete strip-down and returned the chassis design, body, and fit out to its 1966 origins. Even the colour is back to the original chosen by Dick Bassett to match his Jaguar at the time. Rollbar Seatbelt, and other safety changes were made to meet current compliance.

Mark has raced this car at Historic Racing events up and down the East Coast and extensively in South Australia.

MGB GT V8 Race number 50 was originally built by Paul Trevethan in 1988/89, based on a 4-cyl shell, for the current owner and its debut event was the 1989 Island Magic festival. It has been campaigned every year since then and has been progressively developed into the car you see here today. The car has featured in the MA Victorian State Racing Series in both the MG Racing class as well as Marque Sports (currently known as ProdSports) since it debut event and has run at Rob Roy a couple of times in the early days after the MG Car Club re-commissioned the venue, as well as at the 2025 Rob Roy Revival.

Built under the MotorSport Australia Group 2B Class I (Production Sports Car) regulations, it now sports an injected 5.3 litre Rover V8 (from Triumph Rover Spares in Adelaide) running E85 fuel thru 8 down-draft throttle bodies, controlled by a Haltech ECU, Holinger Sequential gearbox and a Marcus Smith negative camber solid rear axle. It is currently engineered in Ballarat by Peter Corcoran at AutoProjects and Restoration.

A consequence of the passage of time, Robin’s adage as a driver is now “the older I get, the faster I was”. The more relaxed nature of an Historic event now suits the driver and the car.

Steve Banks, and I race the number 76 HQ.

I have been a passionate part of the HQ Victoria club since 2016. I’ve been interested in everything to do with cars since I could walk, and have spent too many hours to count, building, rebuilding, and playing around with motors. Finding out about, and then becoming part of the series has fulfilled a lifelong dream of racing (I just never got that call up from the Holden Team), and I still get to spend a bloody lot of time fixing, fiddling and trying to find the best way to get this car closer to the front the attached photos are from round 1 this year at Sandown where I got my first race win and also round win.

I love the sport and have no doubt that I’ll be racing until they take my license off me. The HQ Racing slogan is affordable excitement, everyone that’s racing are great to be around and always willing to help out on each other’s car.

Rohan Hodges - 1968 Lotus Elan Group Sb

I have owned my Elan for almost 50 years and been competing in it for over 40 years and done more than 40,000 race miles. I started in MSCA club sprints and hill climbs in the early 80’s and then moved to the CAMS Marque Sports Cars state racing series. When Group Sb was created in the early 90’s I moved to that category and have enjoyed historic racing for the last 30 years and hope to compete for more years to come,

The car has been steadily developed over the years withing the limits of what’s allowed in Group S and I have tried to keep it in the tradition of a production sports car that can be driven during the week and raced on the weekend. The car has the full original

interior and there is not much else that could be done to reduce the weight so it runs at the standard 700kg weight. Development of suspension to suit modern tyres and track handling has made the ride somewhat less compliant than original but it is still fully road useable and easily controlled on the limit.

I build my own Lotus Twincam competition engines and power from its 1600 cc has evolved from the original 105 HP that the car started with to now around 180 HP with a broad torque spread which makes driving it easy. Most weak points in the engine and drive train have been resolved over the years and the car is reliable and

1948 Monoskate (Silver/Blue): A Testament to Australian Ingenuity

The 1948 Monoskate is a striking example of Australian innovation and craftsmanship. Built by George Reed of Bathurst, NSW, Monoskate is one of four “Skates”—Ford V8 Specials—created by Reed during the 1940s in his multifaceted role as owner, builder, and driver. A replica of “The Red Skate” is proudly displayed at the Bathurst Motor Racing Museum, while “The White Skate” and “Monoskate” remain active on the track today, lovingly cared for by Graeme and Louise Raper.

The name “Monoskate” blends “monoposto” (single-seater) with “skate,” a nickname given to Reed’s cars due to their shortened chassis, which made them resemble roller skates.

Monoskate’s lineage dates back to 1939, when it first raced as the “Ben Tarr Rajo Ford Special” at Mount Panorama. It later evolved into the “Alec Mildren Ford V8 Special,” competing in the NSW Grand Prix at Bathurst in 1946 and 1947. In 1949, George Reed unveiled his final Aussie Special—Monoskate—which went on to challenge imported European marques such as Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Alta, Bugatti, and Talbot-Lago at Bathurst and Mt Druitt.

Built on Ford Model A chassis rails, Monoskate features a split (independent) front end and a 4.5-litre Ford V8 engine producing approximately 180 bhp. It’s equipped with Offenhauser heads, twin Stromberg carburettors, a Scintilla Vertex magneto, a close-ratio threespeed Ford gearbox, and a locked Ford differential. Other notable

components include a circa-1924 brass FIAT tractor steering box, Ford hydraulic drum brakes, Armstrong lever-arm shock absorbers, 16-inch wheels, and its original hand-formed aluminium body—first shaped in 1939.

This car has serious grunt, capable of reaching 100 mph in second gear and topping out at 145 mph.

Monoskate boasts a long and storied career, with victories in circuit races, sprints, and hill climbs. George Reed raced it from 1948 through the late 1950s, followed by Ray Nottson. In 1977, the Reid family (unrelated to George) rediscovered and restored the car, racing it successfully for two decades. A full ground-up restoration was completed by Mal in 1998, and in 2003, Graeme Raper became its custodian.

Graeme has now raced Monoskate for over 20 years, consistently running at the front of the field in Group J & K historic racing. He also competes fiercely against Group L cars at events like Historic Winton and Historic Sandown. Together, Graeme and Monoskate hold lap records in their class at all major Victorian circuits—Sandown, Winton (long and short tracks), and Phillip Island. Not bad for a car with roots stretching back to 1939.

Car number: 41 Driver: Louise Raper

Year Make and Model of Car: 1947 Ford Aussie Special, The White Skate or So-Cal.

Engine make and capacity: Ford Side Valve V8 3920cc

1947 So-Cal (White/Red): A Testament to Australian Ingenuity

The 1947 So-Cal is a striking example of Australian innovation and craftsmanship. Built by George Reed of Bathurst, NSW, it is one of four Ford V8 Specials—affectionately known as “Skates”— that Reed constructed during the 1940s as an owner, builder, and driver. The nickname “Skate” was inspired by the cars’ shortened chassis, which gave them a roller skate-like appearance.

A replica of “The Red Skate” is proudly displayed at the Bathurst Motor Racing Museum, while “The White Skate,” known today as So-Cal, continues to race and is lovingly cared for by Graeme and Louise Raper.

Originally built in 1947, So-Cal was based on a Ford chassis and powered by a Mercury V8 engine with a standard four-speed gearbox. When Jesse Griffiths took over, he upgraded the car with a Wilson pre-selector gearbox. In 1953, Frank Walters began driving So-Cal and quickly developed a deep affection for the car. Over the next two years, he competed in approximately 70–75 races, culminating in a victory at the 1954 Racing Car Championship at Mt Druitt.

In 1955, as custodian of the car, Walters began enhancing its performance. Collaborating via post with American hot rod legend Alex Xydias—founder of the So-Cal Speed Shop in Burbank, California—the car underwent a series of upgrades that gave birth to its iconic name. Together, they installed Edelbrock heads, a Kong ignition system, and a custom-engineered camshaft tailored specifically for Mt Druitt. The final touch was an Edelbrock triple manifold setup, which remains in use to this day.

So-Cal has enjoyed an unbroken racing history since 1947, driven by a distinguished line-up including George Reed, Jesse Griffiths, Frank Walters, Ben Sellars, Kevin Powell, John Young, Eric Worner, and since 2011, Louise Raper. Louise competes in Regularity events, Sprints, Hill Climbs and as of 2025 circuit races, proudly continuing So-Cal’s legacy of 78 years of continuous competition.

Notably, So-Cal also participated in the 1952 and 1958 Australian Grand Prix events held at Mount Panorama, Bathurst.

Louise is a regular presence at historic circuit and hill climb events across Victoria, and her passion for motorsport—shared with husband Graeme, driver of Monoskate—ensures that George Reed’s vision lives on. Together, they honour the spirit of Australian Specials, keeping history alive and racing.

Ford has played an important role in Australian Motor Racing with Ford produced cars, Ford powered cars and Ford Specials featuring in almost every motor racing event held in Australia over the last century. These cars range from the early T Racers which are displayed this weekend, to Australian Specials such as Graeme and Louise Raper’s cars competing at Historic Sandown together with the likes of Geoghan, Moffat and co in

Australian Touring Car Championships and not forgetting the many Open Wheelers powered by Ford engines.

The Historic Sandown Race Committee has invited cars from Group N (Historic Touring Cars), Group C (Ex Bathurst Cars) and Group S (Production Sports Cars) to participate in a Feature Race on Sunday to commemorate the 100 year Anniversary of Ford in Australia.

Larissa Wingett

18-year-old Larissa Wingett will be competing in regularity against her brother (Jacob Wingett) this weekend. She comes from a long line of motorsport history being a third-generation racer. She commenced her motorsport journey in 2024 after completing Year 12. Since then, she has thrown herself into the VHRR Junior program, competing in every event this season. Racing in the Hyundai Excel built by her sister, Abby Wingett, alongside Dave Elliott, Larissa is showing steady progress this year.

The 1998 Excel is a proven, competitive machine in the Victorian State Series, and in Larissa’s hands, it’s quickly becoming a familiar sight across multiple tracks. Currently balancing her first year of a Science degree at the University of Melbourne and also working part time and Repco and Specsavers. Larissa embraces the opportunities the VHRR program provides for young drivers under the age of 21. “It’s such a great entry point into motorsport,” she says.

“I’m grateful for the chance to meet other young competitors, connect with the club, and continue building my skills.” With her sights set on further development her motorsport driving skills into 2026, Larissa Wingett represents the next generation of talent in historic and grassroots motorsport.

Jacob Wingett

At 21, Jacob Wingett is racing at Historic Sandown, piloting a 1972 March 729 Formula Ford in Regularity. Jacob started racing at 14 and today splits his time between the Hyundai Excel (X3) championship and historic meetings with the VHRR Junior program. In 2023 he was VHRR Regularity Outright Champion, VHRR Junior Club Champion and recipient of the Ron Townley Junior Clubman Trophy. Off track he’s a secondyear electrical apprentice and works weekends at Repco. His March 729 is the last Formula Ford produced by March Engineering in Oxfordshire, built on an Arch Motors F3-derived spaceframe (AM72-3) with side-intrusion pods. Tested at Silverstone before its SCCA debut in May 1972. Prepared meticulously with his father, the car will also see Jacob step into Historic FF racing next season.

Abby Wingett

Abby Wingett will be competing at Historic Sandown in a 1962 Elfin Formula Junior. Over the past 18 months she has steadily cut her lap times and continues to build experience across Queensland, Victoria and South Australia, having started in motorsport at 16. Off track, Abby studies Software Engineering part-time and works full-time in GPC Repco’s digital team. The Elfin Formula Junior is rear engine powered with a 1098cc Ford Anglia. It spent over 20 years with Frederick Greeneklee from South Australia and was restored to Formula Junior specification in 2008 by the iconic Bill Hemming from the Elfin Heritage Centre. The car placed 3rd outright in the World Series FJ Golden Jubilee (2008) and has raced at 40+ circuits across Europe, USA, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Abby has been coached from Nigel Tait, Bill Hemming, and mechanical engineering support from David Elliot. She is proud to have come through the VHRR Junior program. She is stepping up into a Bowin Formula Ford next year mentored by seasoned race car driver Peter Williams.

Andrew Beard - Camaro

I purchased my 1969 Camaro in February 2022 from Graham Jarrett in SA, who had owned the vehicle for about 15 years. I did a lot of work on the car throughout that year and competed in my first ever race meeting at Phillip Island in November 2022. I did further development to the car after that but didn’t get to race much the next year due to my partner Sarah being very ill with Breast Cancer. I did a lot of events throughout the 2024 season and by the end of the year I was getting towards the front of the field, and I was really enjoying the

racing. Highlight of the 2024 season was a 2nd place at ‘The Bend Classic’ in October. I missed a few meetings at the start of 2025 due to an engine failure but managed to get the car back together for the ANTCA National Bathurst Challenge in April. Getting to race a car around the world - famous Mount Panorama circuit is just amazing and definitely a bucket list moment in my life. Looking forward to Historic Sandown this November and hope everyone has a safe event. Photo by James Smith (Photographic & Promotional Presentations)

Group S is one of the fastest growing categories of historic motor racing in Australia, with spectacular grids running in excess of 55 cars Based on mildly modified production sports cars, Group S is designed to provide a forum for competitors to race cars from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s in a form similar to period club racing. It is comprised of three sub categories - Group Sa, Group Sb and Group Sc. Group S covers the racing of historic production sports cars. But unlike most other categories in historic motor sport, Group S cars do not need to have “a racing history” nor are issued “certificates of description”. Group S cars are not historic racing cars; they are historic production sports cars, modified within the limits of Group S eligibility criteria.

Basically any historic production sports car within the specified historic period can become a Group S car. Group S therefore has a large pool of potential cars from which to draw. All other classes withthe exception of Group N require the aspirant to find or resurrect a racing car with racing history from the period in question; a more difficult task, and one which also places a limit on the potential size of that racing group. Most historic race meetings in Australia feature Group S events, ranging from scratch races to endurance races. Regularity events may also feature some Group S cars.

This is an early build Pantera (1972), built before the purity of Tom Tjaarda’s timeless design was hit with rubber bumpers, wings and flares from 1973 onwards.

Like all Panteras, it has Ford V8 power (351 cubic inch Cleveland) coupled with a ZF transaxle, both behind the two-seat cabin. This car was imported into Australia from the US and converted to RHD around the turn of the century. Ross Jackson bought the car in 2002 and has been racing it in Group S ever since. It has competed at well over 100 race meetings, won the VHRR Club Championship 3 times (2006, 2012, 2013) and has been an outright winner at Sandown, and a class winner and/or outright podium car at tracks ranging from Winton to Phillip Island, Mallala and SMSP. Ross still holds a Group S class record at Lakeside and also in the Geelong Sprints. At Rob Roy it set FTD at the Anzac 100 VHRR meeting held in April 2015.

More recently in the much faster hands of Ross’ son Chris, the Pantera has set the outright Group S lap record at Goulburn’s One Raceway this year, and the class lap record at Winton short track last year.

Historic Sandown marks the return of this well-known car to competition after Ross contracted an unfortunate case of red mist on the final corner at this year’s Philip Island Classic, which caused the unforgiving pit wall to render it an extremely short-nosed Pantera. “

Adam Jones - Datsun 240K

The Datsun 240K Hardtop, based on the C110 Skyline and sold locally as the 240K, was never designed with Bathurst domination in mind. By the early 1970s, Group C touring car racing in Australia was a battleground between V8 Toranas and Falcons, with smaller Mazdas and Escorts snapping at their heels.

Yet at the 1974 Hardie-Ferodo 1000, the 240K achieved its greatest moment. The car was entered by the Datsun Racing Team and paired with veteran Doug Whiteford - a three-time Australian Grand Prix winner - and Stewart McLeod, a factory Datsun rally driver. Whiteford, affectionately nicknamed “the Maestro,” brought decades of experience and mechanical sympathy.

During the race, when torrential rain lashed Mount Panorama, conditions played perfectly to the 240K’s strengths. Whiteford guided the car with remarkable finesse, carving through the field and reeling in the lighter RX-3s despite the Datsun’s weight disadvantage. For a time, it appeared the unheralded Datsun might topple its class rivals in one of Bathurst’s great underdog stories. Unfortunately, a punctured tyre robbed the team of a result that could have rewritten perceptions of Japanese touring cars in Australia.

Though it never won Bathurst, the 240K’s 1974 performance is remembered as its defining chapter. Current owner Adam Jones continues the cars legacy, demonstrating the Datsun’s strengths while battling higher performance V8’s.

1973 Lola T340/342 - Owner/driver: Evan Farrall

The first day of September 2023 was the beginning of my love affair, I had just purchased a 1973 Lola T340/342 prototype Historic Formula Ford from Penrite Oils.

A cursory “once over” found a few areas in need of care, and following a test and tune outing at Winton more glitches came to light, as expected with a 50 year old racing car.

It was only a few weeks until “Historic Sandown” and I was keen to make it my first ever race meeting, years of spectating had me hooked! Penrite very kindly offered me sponsorship and inclusion in their pit garage, I didn’t want to disappoint. The meeting was a great success, second in class and a trophy.

The next meeting on the racing calendar was Philip Island in early

March, more fettling needed to get the Lola to the fore. March arrived with a heat wave, track temperatures were extreme, carburettor jetting changes required, confidence high, let’s go racing. Friday and Saturday were successful with three class wins and high hopes for the feature race on Sunday.

Lap one, turn two, the dream came to an end as another competitor, after losing control, rolled backwards from the side of the track directly into me.

Seventeen weeks in the automotive Intensive Care Unit has honed my skills in welding, fabricating and mechanics, thank you very much to my supporters for all the encouragement and assistance. Now it’s time again to take to the track, I hope that you all enjoy watching as much as I enjoy racing.

1972 FORD XA HARDTOP - David Ramsay

SHELL Yellow Style

Tribute Car – 1973 John Goss/Kevin Bartlett Bathurst 1000, No. 5 McLeod Ford

My car is a 1972 Ford XA Hardtop that has been restored as a race replica of the 1973 John Goss/Kevin Bartlett car they raced at Bathurst. In the 1973 Bathurst 1000 John Goss put his car on pole and lead for about 2/3rds of the race until he got caught up with a couple of back markers having an accident, John had to eventually retire due to damage sustained in that accident. I have owned for about 16 years and it was fully restored about 14 years ago. I have tried to keep it as close as possible to John’s original car 73 car but also taken advantage of some later technology. My car runs a Cleveland 393 ci stroker, 5 speed Tremac, full floater rear. HP is around 490hp which would be a little more than John had in 73. John Goss provided great information on his original car which assisted greatly in the build; both John and Kevin have seen

Jervis Ward - Falcon Rallye sprint

The Falcon Rallye Sprint refers to the race-prepared versions of the 1964 Ford Falcon Sprint, specifically modified for the Monte Carlo Rally. Ford built these cars with lightweight fiberglass body panels (hood, fenders, doors, deck lid) and alloy bumpers, but many were converted into lightweight Group 5 touring cars later on. While Ford originally entered these cars in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, the “Rallye Sprint” became a specification for a popular type of historic racing car

the car with Kevin doing some hot laps around the DECA circuit. I compete in VHRR Historic events and with the VIC V8’s in the Victoria State racing series. CRD 852 – Australian Formula Two - Rohan Carrig

Built in 1985 to Australian Formula Two Regulations, the CRD 852 was constructed by Ian Carrig at his home workshop in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.

The chassis is a tubular steel “spaceframe” powered by a 1600 cc Ford Crossflow engine producing around 175 hp in a car that weighs 415kg plus driver.

First raced by Ian Carrig in July 1985, Rohan Carrig in December 1992 and having its last race in December 1995. It was garaged and not run again before it was sold in 2002.

Since then, it has been owned by seven different owners with its most notable achievement in that period, winning the NSW State Racing Series driven by Kevin Lewis.

In 2024/2025 it came up for sale again and was able to be purchased by Rohan Carrig in a bit of an “unloved barn find condition” The CRD 852 has undergone a full mechanical restoration to make a return to Historic Group R Racing Cars nearly 30 years after last being driven by Rohan.

We are so happy to have this car back home in our custodianship and share the full circle story of its life.

Mechanical Engineering, the mind to go to the UK and race cars, and do what ever it takes to “get there”. My first real “event“ was a rally sprint at the old Bullens Lion Park at Beenleigh, arrived, they seeded me somewhere in the 60 or 70, with close to 100 entries. I won the day outright, always brings a smile to my face. Then the world was turned upside down with the death of my brother, Martin Paul Tighe was only 4 years older than me, he was running the family business. Overnight, I was running Ivan Tighe Engineering, motorsport and education was on the back burner. I had the pleasure of helping Alan Moffat win the Sandown 500 in 1988 in the ANZ Sierra, Dad flew me to Melbourne to help with the engine tuning and give it a bit more power, not bad for 22 yo.

I finished my Studies part time while running the business, sold my Escort Panel van and bought a sensible road car in a BMW 3 series, and began to build a Ford RS 2000 for Club Cars. Starting with a basic std Mk 2, 2 door shell. Building it entirely under my mum and dads house at East Brisbane. Then the late 80’s the Ford Sierra was the car to have in Group A, and with Dick Johnsons help, I had a non turbo version of the YB Cosworth in the Mk2 Escort. Winning the club Car championship in the car in 1990. 1991, competed in the

round of the Aust. Touring car championship at Lakeside. In one of Bob Holdens Toyota Corolla, the weekend was a total failure. At this time, I was also Navigating for a friend in an Escort RS 2000 Rally car in the QLD Championships. He was not that fast but really enjoyed the sport, so began thinking about rallying. I borrowed his Escort Rally car, and conned a friend into navigating for me, and competed in a Rally spring at Willowbank. Seeded almost last we won the day, our competition on the day was a guy named Stewart Reed. Still remember the comments at the presentation…. I don’t know who you are, or where you are from, but go back there we don’t what you here…..

Seemed to be pretty good at it so I bought a That was fun I also built a Suzuki GTI rally car, for a change of surface. Purchasing 1 new Car straight from Suzuki Aust and Building it into a Group N rally car. Competing in the QLD rally championship in 19901991, with good success in our class, finishing up as far as 5th or 6th outright in the QLD championship.

Deciding I needed something faster I purchased a Nissan GTIR direct from Japan. Building that into a Group N spec car for 1992

Joseph Tighe, Born in Brisbane on 17th June 1966

My passion for motorsport is from my Father Ivan Tighe, Motorsport was the constant in my childhood growing up. Hillclimb in the 60,s Aust F2 in the 1970, to a F 5000 chevron in the late 70’s. Then back to Hillclimb in the 80’s with the F5000, and a Kaditcha Atlantic car. Every Saturday night at the speedway to watch the Bikes and the cars. Ivan won the Australian Hillclimb Champion 3 times, 1964, 1985, 1991

My first Memory in motorsport based, Hume Weir, 1972 with dad winning a round of the Aust Formula 2 championship. Dad ran over a snake on the race track and they presented it too him with the trophy.

Began on Motorbikes when I was about 9 years old, first with a Honda Z50. Progressing to a Honda XR 80, Yamaha YZ 100 and a Honda CR 125. Building and services all my own engines by

the time I was 12. Looking back now it must have been very odd for me to turn up to places and ask companies to do work for me. And I was only 12.

Several state and club championships, which in included a factory backed Honda given to me to race on a 2-year rotation swapping for the newer model each year.

One of the Memories is Alan Moffatt turning up one day and going for a ride around the block on one of my Bikes. Didn’t think much of it at the time….. Once I got my road Licence in the early 80’s, go Karts were the go, I had a ford 1600 Panel Van which I put my go kart in the back, and away I went. The class was International little, the fastest sprint class at the time, competed in the local events, best finishes were 5th in the QLD and I think about 9th in the Aust Championships.

I also began competing in my escort Panel Van in Hillclimb’s in the later 80’s finishing school and began a Batchelor of ....

Peter Williams - Car #4 Brabham BT21A

This Brabham model has a very interesting history driven by both Sir Jack Brabham and Jochen Rindt in 1966 and 1967. This particular car had at least three (3) different engines in the first two years of its life and two (2) chassis plates.

Sir Jack who had been driving BT18/s along with New Zealand driver Denny Hulme with great success was advised mid-way through the 1966 season that for 1967 Honda would not be supplying F2 engines to Motor Racing Developments (MRD) beyond that season. Brabham immediately developed the BT21 model and trialed Cosworth engines against the current

Honda being used in the BT18/s.

We know this particular model finished the season running second at Brands Hatch but we believe that Sir Jack drove this car in the last 3 races though some argue that he only drove this car in the last two. 1966 was an incredibly successful year for Sir Jack winning both the F1 championship as driver and manufacturer and the F2 championship. This is one of three (3) cars Jack drove in the latter.

Today the car is regularly seen at historic events across Australia running in M&O driven by the owner.
