Once dismissed as being out of fashion, today Natural History and Taxidermy is appealing to a new generation of collectors and interior designers, appreciated and sought-after for both its academic interest and its visual appeal.

YOUR SPECIALIST

Robbie Bright is the specialist in charge of the Natural History and Taxidermy sales programme. He joined Tennants in 2007 as a porter in the saleroom and on the transport team, having previously worked in his family’s fine art and antiques delivery business.

Robbie has had a keen interest in taxidermy and the natural world since childhood. His father was an amateur taxidermist and dealer, and Robbie spent many hours helping with the finishing of cased specimens with naturalistic detail. After assisting in the Natural History and Taxidermy department for several years, Robbie was appointed as the specialist in 2015.

Giles Sim’s life has been deeply intertwined with the rhythms of the countryside and the wonders of the natural world. From a young age, he was drawn to the outdoors, cultivating a profound love for hunting, horse racing and, most notably, birdwatching. This passion for avian life sparked a remarkable journey over 25 years ago, when he began to collect taxidermy birds - a hobby that quickly grew into an obsession.

Giles set out with a clear and simple rule: to collect only those birds he had personally observed in the wild. This led him on countless expeditions across the globe, from the sunlit plains of Spain to the dense forests of Romania and from the lush rainforests of Costa Rica to the vibrant shores of Tobago. Eventually, his zeal extended beyond the limits of his initial rule, and he began to acquire birds from even the most far-flung corners of the world, whether or not he had the opportunity to see them in person. His collection became a testament to the diversity and beauty of birdlife across the globe, encompassing species from every continent.

Giles’ beloved and long-suffering wife, Penny, who has sadly passed away, took on the meticulous task of cataloguing each bird, ensuring that each was properly documented and preserved. The collection stands as a tribute, not only to the wonders of nature but also to an adventurous life well lived. Now, as some of these birds come to auction, it offers a rare opportunity for others to own a piece of this extraordinary collection.

William Hart was a Christchurch taxidermist who became interested in natural history as a boy and passed on his skills, and later his business ‘William Hart & Son, Preservers of Birds and Beasts’, to his son, Edward. Edward Hart built a large collection of mounted birds, which he initially exhibited in his own small museum. Hart’s Museum received many visitors, including Sir Robert and Lady Baden-Powell in March 1914. The building was described as ‘warm, well-lit and very clean, the ideal of a private museum, every part of which is crowded with rare and beautiful birds.’ A chart drawn up by Edward Hart for Bournemouth Corporation gave some indication of the space taken up by the cases. The total length of the bird cases was 270 feet (82 metres) with a height of 10 feet (3 metres). In addition, the mammal cases extended another 30 feet (9 metres). By 1903, Hart sought an established museum to purchase the collection in order to maintain and exhibit it in perpetuity; however, no buyers came forward. In 1924, the collection was sold to John Hall, an industrialist and keen ornithologist who displayed it in a purpose-built gallery in his home, Broughton Hall in Staffordshire.

Captain Oates was a keen collector of birds and frequently returned from his adventures with new and exciting specimens. It is believed that this is one such case which he brought back to Gestingthorpe Hall, his home in Essex. in 1939 Miss Oates gifted a number of birds including the Bustards to Culford School in Suffolk where they are remembered by David Nott as being in the Biology department. They remained there for many years before being sold at auction to raise funds. Up to June 2007 the case remained in a private collection in East Anglie. They were bought by Giles Sim at a Cheffins auction in Perth and brought back to Little Farm 15th September 2007

We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.

CITES Regulations/Ivory Act 2018

CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). Both CITES Article 10 licences and Ivory Exemption Declarations are non-transferable and buyers must apply for a new Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration in their name if they wish to sell to a third party.

It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.

CITES regulations are given on www.ukcites.gov.uk or may be obtained from:
