Life with a Silver Lining

In an age when five years in a job is seen as a long time the career of the international silver and object-of-vertu expert Anthony Phillips appears all the more extraordinary, having worked for the international fine art auctioneers Christie’s for over 56 years.

Despite having just completed a geography degree he chose to join Christie's in 1967, initially working on the front desk for the princely sum of £5. His calm and studious manner caught the eye of the legendary Arthur Grimwade, director of the Silver Department, who had joined in 1932.

Phillips soon catalogued the monthly sales supported by the boom in the antique silver market. In this role he quickly developed his "eye" for great objects and benefited from assisting Grimwade with the proofing of his magnum opus, London Goldsmiths, their Marks and Lives. His quiet charm helped. Even the sharp-tongued James Lees Milne wrote in his diaries how charming the ‘young silver expert from Christie's’ had been.

His great break came in 1976 when he was chosen as one of the five experts sent to open Christie's first saleroom in New York. The new auction team took on their long-time rivals

Sotheby's, whose acquisition of the New York firm, ParkeBernet, in 1964 had given them a head start.

In England, Christie's was a household name, but in New York, all business had to be hunted down and competed for. Phillips had an early piece of luck - combined with an expert hunch –in the extraordinary Charles I goblet he traced back to the Mayflower pilgrim and first governor of the Plymouth Colony, William Bradford. This find and its lucrative sale helped cement Christie’s reputation in the US market.

Despite a disability following a teenage illness and operation, which made physical exertion difficult, Phillips spent twenty years in New York flourishing in a strong market. His curiosity and love for the subject expanded his knowledge well beyond the confines of British silversmithing. He was at his happiest unravelling the history behind 15th-century reliquaries, an obscure German hallmark or a Spanish chalice.

He eventually oversaw the auctions of silver, objects of vertu and Russian works of art in New York, London, Geneva, Rome, Amsterdam and Paris. His fear of flying, acquired from his mother, had to be overcome to allow visits to clients and auctions on four continents, his nerves unassuaged by

occasionally sharing a pair of first-class seats with an Imperial Fabergé egg or medieval reliquary.

His reputation and knowledge helped secure the sales from great collections formed by the banker and voracious collector Pierpont Morgan in 1986 and others. In 1988 he sold extraordinary treasures from the shipwrecked Spanish galleon Atocha. A landmark auction in 1990 for The Republic of the Philippines Foundation for Good Government consisted of the magnificent silver amassed by the deposed Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos.

Many of the great silver collectors of the later 20th century looked to him for advice, including the late Audrey Love, née Guggenheim, whose collection he catalogued and published as Antiquity Revisited: English and French Silver-Gilt from the Collection of Audrey Love, with his friend and colleague Jeanne Sloane. At the age of 100, Mrs Love donated her Napoleonic silver to the French state, with Phillips and Sloane organising the sale of her magnificent Regency silver at Christie's after her death.

His return to London in 1996 led to further highlights; the sales from diamond magnate Sir Julius Wernher's mansion Luton Hoo in 2000 and the Austrian Rothschild family in the same year. In 2003 he worked with descendants of the Gutman family to sell three spectacular works restituted to them by the Dutch government years after Nazi seizure.

His greatest sale took place in 2009. Held at the Grand Palais, Paris he sold the magnificent silver from the Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé collection. The public viewing lasted from early morning until well beyond midnight, with crowds queueing for hours in the Parisian winter. The silver section alone totalled a record-breaking €19.8 million, in a sale of over €370 million.

Born in Hampstead in 1945 Phillips was the second son of Eric Phillips, a senior civil servant and the celebrated artist and illustrator artist Phyllis Bray, a prominent member of the pre-war East London Group and post war London Group of artists.

His early education at the Hall Preparatory School in Hampstead and later at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford gave him little insight into the art world, but his mother's artistic career and her interest in Renaissance jewellery led Anthony to pursue a career in the decorative arts. Further inspiration came from his godmother, the Renaissance jewellery scholar and Metropolitan Museum curator

Anthony with The Johann Friedrich Baer Cup, image courtesy of Christie’s

Yvonne Hackenbroch. Bittersweetly Anthony organised the sale of his mother's celebrated collection in December 1989, which enabled her to be cared for at home in her final years with Parkinson's Disease.

Anthony retired from Christie's in 2009 having trained and mentored many future specialists. He remained a much appreciated and admired consultant to the firm, travelling to sales when possible, until ill-health prevented it. He remained close to Christie’s, researching obscure marks, offering sage advice and advising on valuations. In his funeral address, his brother recounted helping Phillips check work emails whilst gravely ill in hospital after the fall which precipitated his passing.

His great passion for the works of art was evident through his deep knowledge and expertise, lightly worn. He was admired and liked by colleagues, clients, academics and dealers. He was quietly spoken with an infectious sense of humour and a fund of stories about the people, places and situations he had encountered during his long career; from failing to recognise an exiled King to handling Imperial Fabergé eggs.

He is survived by his wife Sara, son Luke and daughter Isobel.

Phyllis Bray (1911-1991), Anthony's mother, was born in Norwood in west London to William de Bray, a British diplomat, who served at one point as an attaché to the court of the mother of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Despite her father being in the Civil Service Phyllis was to pursue her passion for art, rather than following in his footsteps. She was to receive a scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art from 1927 to 1931, where her tutor was Henry Tonks and where she was to receive several prizes for her work.

In 1933, after she had finished her studies at the Slade she was elected to the London Group and also married her first husband, the artist John Cooper and together they were to become core members

of the East London Group. Bray was known for her landscapes, which she painted in both oils and watercolours, and for her murals. For over forty years Bray worked with the muralist Hans Feibusch painting in churches across Britain. A series of twelve murals, completed in 1964, by Feibusch and Bray, in the central hall of Newport Civic Centre depicts the history of Newport. She also worked on a number of solo projects, such as the three murals, on Music, Drama and Ballet, she produced for the People's Palace on the Mile End Road in east London. These works were thought to have been destroyed but large sections of them were rediscovered, under layers of later painting, when the building was acquired by Queen Mary University of London and are now on display again. A mural Bray painted for St Crispin's Church in Bermondsey remains intact.

Besides her painting and murals Bray was also a regarded book illustrator, working for Oxford University Press and Faber & Faber, among others, also designing posters for the likes of London Transport and advertisements B.P. and for the John Lewis Partnership. Bray exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1950, 1952, 1955 and in 1960 and her work was included in group shows at the Leicester Galleries in London and she had solo shows Drian Gallery in London and the Mignion Gallery in Bath. The Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, the Blackpool Art Gallery, New College, Oxford, and the UK Government Art Collection hold examples of her work.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s Bray built up a collection of jewellery, mostly from the medieval and Renaissance periods, an interest which no doubt inspired Anthony to follow his career path which saw him join Christie's. Some 80 lots from collection were later to be sold at Christie's in December 1989.

12.5cm long, 4oz 5dwt, 132gr

Provenance:

The collection of the late Anthony Phillips (1945-2024).

The maker’s mark, which is stuck three times on the present stirrup-cup, is illustrated by J. Helft, Le Poincons des Provinces Francaises, Paris, 1985, p.62, no. 174b. Helft records another piece with this makers’ marks struck three times by Sebille as ‘Maitre-Abonne’. Unlike their English counterparts who would strike only their maker’s marks as a means of avoiding paying tax French silversmiths would instead pay as ‘subscribermasters’ for the privilege of marking their own production. This would have shielded them from the risk and expense of sending their silver away for hallmarking.

Arthur Grimwade has suggested, in a Rapifax of 23 June 1977, maintained in the family archive, that the arms are likely to be those of Sampson Gideon (1699-1762) impaling another. He based this on the belief that Gideon's wife was Elizabeth Erwell, presumably a transcription error for Ermell, though recent research suggests she was Jane, not Elizabeth. As her family was not armigerous, Grimwade speculated that the family instead assumed the arms of the family whose name seemed closest to theirs, in this case Erveley.

Sampson Gideon was a wealthy British banker and philanthropist, perhaps best remembered for his involvement in financing the government's suppression of the Jacobite rising of 1745. He was born in London to a Jewish family with Portuguese ancestry, his grandfather being born in Porto, though later moving to Germany. The family was active in the West Indies sugar trade until Rowland Gideon, Sampson's father, moved to London, being admitted to the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers in 1698, the year before Sampson was born.

Sampson's early career involved trading and speculating in various commodities and he was later to become involved in the financing of the British army, his wealth increased rapidly and dramatically so that by 1759 he was believed to be worth some £350,000, having started with a not insubstantial inheritance of £1,500 in 1720. He would seem to have been involved at the heart of finance in London through the second quarter of the 18th century, surviving, for example, the burst of the South Sea bubble and acted as an advisor to Robert Walpole.

He had aspired to join the aristocracy, but despite his wealth and connections, a title was not bestowed on him as he was a practicing Jew. His marriage in the 1740s to Jane Ermell, a Christian, resulted in three children who were baptised in the Church of England meaning that the eldest son, also Sampson, was given a baronetcy and later created Baron Eardley of Spalding in 1789. £800-1,200
