2131 A Victorian Silver Plate and Ivory ‘Crow Foot’ Decanter, by Hukin and Heath, Circa 1880, Designed by Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) the body tapering cylindrical and on three tapering legs with ‘crow’ feet, with flat hinged cover and carved ivory handle 24.5cm high Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) A design for a so called ‘crows’ foot decanter’, designed by Dr Christopher Dresser, was registered by Hukin and Heath on 26 March 1879 as shape number 2045. That iteration seems to be made in glass with silver plate mounts. Other examples, made in all metal, like the present example, are stamped as shape number 2221. The later shape number suggests the pattern was introduced sometime later that same year or very early in 1880, however an example is recorded as being stamped with the design registration diamond mark for 9 October 1878 (Sotheby’s, 1 November 1996, lot 2). Christopher Dresser, often referred to as the ‘father of industrial design’ was born in Glasgow, though with family roots to Yorkshire. He is believed to have attended the Government School of Design in London at a young age and became interested in the design of a wide range of items in an array of materials, including carpets and other textiles, ceramics, furniture, glass, silver, and silver plate. Not only was he a designer he was also an influential author on design and ornament, including the books The Art of Decorative Design (1862), The Development of Ornamental Art in the International Exhibition (1862), and Principles of Design (1873). The late 1870s and into the early 1880s would seem to have been a very fruitful time for Dresser. He was working in partnership with Charles Holme as wholesale importers of ‘Oriental’ goods in London as well as acting as Art Superintendent at the Linthorpe Art Pottery in Middlesbrough, where he is believed to have designed over 1,000 pots. Around this time he was also producing metalware designs for firms such as James Dixon and Sons, Elkington and Hukin and Heath, the makers of the present jug. While examples of both decanter shape number 2045 and 2221 are known, for instance a silver plate mounted glass example of shape 2045 is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (CIRC.186-1966) shape 2221 would seem to be rarer. An example, stamped ‘Designed by Dr C Dresser’ was sold Christie’s, London, 3 December 1993 and another at Sotheby’, New York, 10 March 2005. Each of those had a metal handle with no other examples seeming to be recorded with an ivory handle, such as on the present example. With transferable ivory exemption certificate number 9PX4VLHL for items of outstandingly high artistic, cultural or historic value. £3,000-5,000

Whilst reasonable endeavours will be made to execute absentee bidding up to the Day of Sale, Tennants will not be liable for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the Prospective Buyer’s risk.
Condition Reports We are happy to provide Condition Reports to Prospective Buyers, but would welcome your request as soon as possible, preferably at least 48 hours before the Day of Sale. A Condition Report is an honest expression of our opinion, not a statement of fact and is provided as a service to the Seller. We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
VAT Value added tax or any equivalent tax chargeable in the UK or elsewhere. AML Due Diligence
Caveat Emptor The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale. Additional Images Requests for additional images of items in the sale can made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.
We conduct appropriate Due Diligence checks to comply with current Anti Money Laundering regulations for any buyer exceeding the threshold of £8,000. We reserve the right to withhold the purchased lots until such checks have been completed. Agency We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.
Online Bidding We offer an online bidding service via our own platform Tennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Jewellery Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates. Watches All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary. All lots subject to a buyer’s premium of 28.8% inclusive of VAT @ 20%
