Sarah is the specialist in charge of the Fashion, Costume & Textiles Department and she is also part of the general valuations team.
Shortly after graduating from Northumbria University in 1994, Sarah joined Tennants as a saleroom assistant. Under the guidance of Edmund and Rodney Tennant, Sarah worked her way up to become a general valuer.
As Tennants expanded, Sarah took her love of fabric and textiles and established the specialist Antique Costume and Textile sales, which are now held quarterly, and Modern Costume and Accessories sales held three times a year.
Sarah has a particular expertise and interest in antique fabrics and needlework and has grown the department over many years, handling many important private collections such as The Castle Howard Collection.

I have always been a collector and a hoarder. Starting with an object that catches my eye and then going off on tangents of all directions.
Fashion and textiles have always been a passion and in particular the historic aspect. I am fascinated with the social history of 'why things are' and what brought us to that point.
I started collecting costume in the early 90's. My collection starts from the 1770's with some Spitalfields silk dresses and goes through all the decades of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Thinking of the youth culture of the 1970's, I bought a few pieces of Punk. This then led me to Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood and their collections through the 1980's New Romantics movement.
What fascinated me about Vivienne Westwood is her own research into fashion history and how this influenced her own work, in pieces such as the sacque-back, bustles, crinolines and cut & slash.
Westwood also had a passion for subverting British sartorial traditions, as seen in the tartan and tweed, country pursuits, fox and hounds and the Guards at the Palace. There was even a Punk Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2004 I visited the Vivienne Westwood retrospective at the V&A and bought the Claire Wilcox exhibition book. This put me on a mission to try to find as many of these iconic pieces myself. Hence my collection of over 200 pieces.
Some of the pieces I have worn over the years, though most were bought for the collection. Sadly, my lifestyle and body has changed over these years, and I now no longer have the occasion to wear these pieces.
It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to part with my collection. I do hope they will give enjoyment and pleasure to the new owners. It is wonderful for me to see the lovely displays that Tennants have put together, with the space to display them in their full glory..... My displays were just hung on rails upon rails in a spare bedroom.

Pirate Collection, A/W 1981-1982
This was her breakthrough collection as a serious designer and her first Paris runway show. It showed her move towards the New Romantic movement featuring swash buckling sailors, highway men dressed in buccaneer trousers, striped fabrics and billowing shirts.
Westwood incorporated ‘godets’ influenced by 17th and 18th century costume, which were small triangular or diamond shaped panels of fabrics, often in contrasting colours, to enhance the silhouette and add a touch of theatricality.
‘Squiggle’ one of Vivienne’s most recognisable designs today was created for this collection. The inspiration was discovered on a wood block print whilst visiting the studio of her friend and French fashion designer Jean-Charles Castelbajac.

Les Femmes Collection, S/S 1996
‘Les Femmes ne Connaissent pas toute leur Coquetterie’, was the original title and translates as ‘Women don’t know the full extent of their Coquettishness’. Inspiration was taken from the works of Ninon de Lenclos a French author, courtesan and patron of the arts in the 17th century.
The runway collection saw a return to relaxed and ladylike silhouettes, focusing on tailoring and taking her inspiration from 18th and 19th century fashions, incorporating the sack-back, bringing 18th century formal wear into the world of modern fashion.
Toile du Jouy is one of France’s most recognisable and popular fabric designs. Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf (1738-1815) initially created these block printed designs, typically depicting bucolic scenes of courting couples and pastoral scenes in monochrome colours of primarily blue, purple and red.

Cafe Society Collection S/S 1994 Westwood saw a return to France for inspiration through the eyes of the Belle Epoque period circa 1890-1910. Paris cafes served as a hub of all social and intellectual life amongst the creative talents of the period, as seen through the works of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Westwood paid homage to the first couture house, The House of Worth founded by the English designer Charles Frederick Worth, re-creating the slender silhouettes of the period.
In 1992 Dame Vivienne Westwood was awarded her OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth II; she wore a suit similar to lot 2055 combining the structure of the jacket with the femininity of the ‘frothy’ skirt. She received her DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2006, both were achieved for her enormous contribution to the fashion industry.

‘Reading is the biggest passion of my life, more than fashion’
This was Westwood’s ode to literature, knowledge and curiosity, featuring prints of exotic flora, fauna, entomology, library prints and the deconstruction of shapes with flounces and folds.
The ‘bookbinder print’ as seen on this skirt, was taken from a photograph of the shelves in Vivienne and Andreas Kronthaler’s home in Clapham, featuring works by Aristotle, Aldus Huxley and Bertrand Russell. This image was reproduced on costume and also used as the backdrop for the runway show.

Mini-Crini Collection S/S 1985
‘Never fashion invented that was more sexy’ ‘how great to come into a room and occupy 6ft of space’ Vivienne Westwood.
This marked a cardinal change in Westwood’s designs and a shift towards tailoring and a more deliberate focus on reworking ideas taken from historical dress. The stand-out garment of this collection was the short bell-shaped skirt, a cheekily sexual garment that combined the outline of a child’s party frock with an abbreviated version of the Victorian crinoline.
‘The crinoline idea had been with me for quite some time before I developed it into a collection. I wanted to save experimenting with the crinoline for a rainy day, so to speak…. The first time I ever saw a crinoline was in the ballet Petruschka and I was immediately drawn to it. The mini crinoline encourages you to walk with a certain swing and it swiggles, which I also like.’

'Fashion to me is like walking a tightrope, where you risk falling off into the ridiculous, but if you can stay on that tightrope, you can achieve a triumph'
Grand Hotel Collection S/S 1993
This collection was titled not only the 1932 Greta Garbo film, but also the show’s venue, Le Grand Hôtel, Paris. Westwood re-imagined the idea of a hotel lobby where people from all walks of life gathered. Models in the show included men, women and children both professional and amateur. Westwood herself even modelled her own designs for the first time.
Sleek, satin pyjamas were a staple of the collection, along with bikinis and headgear to invoke the Riviera. The praise it received, as well as the approachable nature of the show opened the door for Vivienne Westwood’s creations to be shown and sold across more of the mainstream.
After a few false starts previously when it came to the commercial sale of her work, a feature in Littlewoods catalogue came the next year, displaying designs from and akin to those viewed in ‘Grand Hotel’. While pieces such as her flared trousers with a 12-foot train were unlikely to land with mainstream consumers, the printed satin pyjamas with the stitched orb design were one of the many designs that sold widely across the globe.

Anglomania Collection A/W 1993
This collection embodied a historical culture blended with masculine tailoring and outrageously feminine forms. Westwood continued to draw her inspiration from European fashion of the 17th to 19th centuries, punk influences and the tradition of tartan.
Westwood first experimented with tartan in the late 1970s, merging its use with the distinct punk aesthetic she’d built with her then-partner, Malcolm McLaren. Together they deconstructed tartan garments only to reassemble them to create an unconventional final design. Clashing colours and patterns, cut on the bias, offered a design focused on non-conformity and representing Westwood’s quintessential rebellion.
Westwood viewed tartan as a fabric with a ‘purpose and a story,’ acknowledging its deep roots in Scottish tradition and craftsmanship alongside its more modern equivalents.
Anglomania stands as one of Vivienne Westwood’s most iconic and influential collections, shaping not only British fashion but also leaving a lasting impact on the fashion world.

This marked the beginning of Vivienne Westwood’s more overtly politicized work. The word PROPAGANDA in bold, block lettering was worked into a multitude of pieces in the collection, inspired by Aldous Huxley’s essay, ‘Propaganda in a Democratic Society’
The collection also highlighted a change in perception by Westwood, who channelled her previous Seditionaries into the collection without committing in the same way. ‘I wanted to do some T-shirts,’ She said, ‘But I didn’t want to rehash the old “Destroy” or “Anarchy in the U.K.” slogans because I don’t believe in those things anymore’.’ The focus instead was based more on Huxley’s writings, and visual quotes from Canadian author and social activist, Naomi Klein, likening over-consumption to a cockroach infestation.
The 2005 collection marked a re-set of aesthetics and intentions from Vivienne Westwood, who also included a petition to free Leonard Peltier, a Native American rights activist, in her show notes. At this point, the more explicitly political, social, and environmental activism we’ve come to know her for began.
The designs included deconstructed corsets and skirts, military-inspired silhouettes, and historical influences, but the loud block print was the star of the show as the running motif. Vivienne herself wore the near-twin of this piece as the finale for the show, punctuating its significance through the collection.

Harris Tweed is meticulously handcrafted by skilled islanders at their home in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.
During the 1980s it was struggling to gain a wider audience on the fabric market, so the Harris Tweed Association invited young designers to the island as part of a competition, Vivienne Westwood was one of these designers.
After this she became a champion of British fabrics and ethical production incorporating these luxury cloths within her tailored designs. This long-standing alliance between the islanders, Harris Tweed Association and the business of Vivienne Westwood continues today. It is the only fabric in the world to be protected by an Act of Parliament, ensuring the traditions remain on the island and in the hands of these skilled artisans who oversee every stage of production, utilising generations of knowledge.

Time Machine Collection A/W 1988-1989’
The title was inspired by the 1895 science-fiction novel of the same name by H.G Wells. Westwood created a wide variety of clothing styles from throughout history, oscillating through varying periods. Each section had its own title, suggesting their historical era, from conservative Harris Tweed skirt suits to ‘Keep on Jousting’ seen here, to pieces modelled after the imagined youth of Miss Marple, the collection boasted a wide array of looks, each reflecting on numerous British cultures and traditions.
‘Time Machine’ marked the beginning of a long artistic relationship with the Wallace Collection, a museum devoted to the French arts of the 18th century. Westwood was clearly inspired on this suit by their ‘armour’ creating reticulated overlapping components.

The Wallace Collection in London is a museum devoted to 18th century French decorative arts, collected by Sir Richard Wallace and the Marquess of Hertford during the 18th and 19th centuries.
This dress was inspired by a Rococo marquetry mirror dated circa 1713, designed by Andre-Charles Boulle, it boasts intricate twists of acanthus leaves, cupids, satyrs and other motifs in both silver and gold foil on a synthetic velvet.
‘I believe that art is a mirror on life,’ She said, when speaking of her artistic relationship with the museum, ‘It gives us the depth of understanding on how other people lived. I have been inspired by it my whole career.’
Vivienne was photographed wearing an identical dress, see British Vogue, July 1992. She used this boulle print for the first time in ‘Portrait’ but went on to repeat it in different colourways and fabric textures in ‘Dressing Up’ and ‘Salon’. First shown on the catwalk A/W 1991

Portrait Collection A/W 1990
The Portrait Collection has been quoted as being ‘A love letter to the Rococo Movement’. This corset was inspired by the Wallace Collection and François Boucher’s 1743 painting of Daphnis and Chloe, Shepherd Watching a Sleeping Shepherdess. This iconography has been used throughout the collection since the 1990s.
The corset mirrored that of 18th century designs, instead using modern materials for comfort and ease. Westwood inevitably elevated these items of costume that were formerly underwear and a source of female oppression to outerwear and a form of sexual empowerment.

Voyage to Cythera, A/W 1989-1990
The harlequin mini-crini combines Westwood’s love of history, and the fanciful. Inspired by the Italian Commedia Dell Arte, groups of travelling artist who entertained the fashionable aristocracy and Royal Courts in the 16th century, incorporating comedy, dance, music and acrobatics into their performances. It was also a series of paintings by Jean-Antoine Watteau called ‘French Comedians’ which featured the harlequin as a playful subversion dressed in this vibrant costume of theatrical tradition.
It also combines two of Vivienne Westwood’s favourite items of clothing, the corset and mini-crini.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
The principle of caveat emptor applies to the sale of all goods sold at auction by us. Furthermore, we have no control over the condition of any item offered for sale.
Requests for additional images of items in the sale can be made up to 48 hours before the Day of Sale.
We offer an online bidding service via our own platform - Tennants Live Bidding at www.tennants.co.uk. Items purchased via this platform will be subject to an additional 1.5% commission charge plus VAT at the prevailing rate. We also offer online bidding via www.the-saleroom.com for prospective buyers who cannot attend the sale. Items bought via this platform will be subject to an additional 4.95% commission charge plus VAT.
By completing registration on www.the-saleroom.com and providing your credit/bank card details and unless alternative arrangements are agreed with us, you;
(a) authorise Tennants, if they so wish, to charge the credit/bank card given in part of full payment, including all fees, for items successfully purchased in the auction via www.the-saleroom.com; and
(b) confirm that you are authorised to provide these credit/bank details to Tennants through www.the-saleroom.com and agree that Tennants are entitled to permit the shipping of the goods to the card holder and card holder address provided in fulfilment of the sale.
We do not accept any liability for any losses, however arising, as a result of a prospective buyer’s use of www.the-saleroom.com. Use of www.the-saleroom.com is subject to separate terms and conditions which do not form part of these conditions.
Requests for telephone bidding must be registered at least one hour prior to the close of the View Day. We will not accept requests on the Day of Sale. Telephone Lines are booked on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to a minimum lot value of £500 for Fine Art Sales and £200 for all other sales.
Whilst reasonable endeavours will be made to execute absentee bidding up to the Day of Sale, Tennants will not be liable for any default or neglect in connection with this service. All such arrangements therefore are made entirely at the Prospective Buyer’s risk.

Value added tax or any equivalent tax chargeable in the UK or elsewhere.
We conduct appropriate Due Diligence checks to comply with current Anti Money Laundering regulations for any buyer exceeding the threshold of £6,000. We reserve the right to withhold the purchased lots until such checks have been completed.
We act as agents for the Seller, whose details remain confidential. If you buy at auction your contract is with the Seller, not us.
Payment is accepted online via our website.
Card payments where the card holder is not present will only be accepted for transactions up to £500.
Payment can be made and purchases collected during the auction.
All accounts must be settled within 14 days of the sale. Accounts not paid within 14 days will automatically be subject to an interest charge of 5% above base rate from the day of sale.
All purchases must be collected from our Leyburn offices, unless stated otherwise, within seven days of the Sale (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm).
