FRONT COVER Lot 2299 (part)

Georg Jensen: Beauty and Functionality

For many Georg Jensen is the firm which best represents the simplicity of Scandinavian design. Georg Jensen (1866-1935) trained in Copenhagen as a silversmith, goldsmith and sculptor, which included 2 years with the artist Ballin. Jensen was a late follower of a Danish style known as skønwirke (meaning aesthetic work), but probably the most famous artist of that movement. His distinctive style had some common ground with the Austrian secessionists and with an appreciation for the Art Nouveau style, he favoured organic forms, using stylistic representations of nature whilst paring back the designs so they were both simple and ornate, with functionality at the forefront.

Jensen opened his own shop in 1904, and the brand grew to achieve international acclaim. Later pieces were more abstract than his earlier work, although naturalistic influences were sometimes still evident. Jensen continued to design many pieces himself, whilst also employing talented artists to create designs stylistically in keeping with his. The firm acknowledged their input, quite a revolutionary concept. Over the years names such as Henning Koppel (1918-1981), Jørgen Ditzel (1921-1961), Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005) and Vivianna “Torun” Bülow-Hübe (1927-2004) joined or collaborated with the business, allowing new designs to continue following the death of Jensen. The Georg Jensen brand continues today.

Pantin was born in London into a family of French silversmiths who originally hailed from Rouen. Pantin gained his freedom from Pierre Harache in 1701 and variously worked in Peacock Street, St Martin’s Lane and then, from 1709-1711, when the present candlesticks were hallmarked, at St Martin-in-the-Fields; the peacock, a reference to his workshop on Peacock Street, is a feature of all of his recorded marks.

William Gamble was the son of Thomas Gamble, a carpenter. He apprenticed to John Sutton in June of 1680 and was to gain his freedom in March 1688, though his first recorded mark doesn’t appear until 1697 when he is recorded as working on Foster Lane. He worked his way up in the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths’, joining the Livery in 1705, the court in 1724 and finally becoming Warden in 1730. He would seem to have had a successful career giving the surviving body of work that exists, including a broad range of domestic wears of which the present teapot is a good example.

These arms are those of Ranson, Hinson or Waltham, with a crescent for difference, impaling another.

As recorded by Arthur Grimwade the early ledgers which are preserved at Goldsmiths’ Hall in London have no page for the letter V in largeworkers register, it believed to have fallen out, so it is not entirely clear who Edward Vincent was apprenticed to (A. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths 1697-1837, Their Marks and Lives, London, 1990, pp. 689-690). His first recorded mark is 1739 and shows him to be the son of William Vincent, a yeoman from Hendon in the county of Middlesex. This entry suggests that he was apprenticed to Robert Cooper in 1699 and free by July 1712. It is generally accepted that the EV mark that appears on the present hexafoil salver was the second mark he registered, in around 1720, when the sterling standard was re-introduced.

His existing body of work suggests that he was a prolific maker of a wide range of plate through the 1720s and 1730s. Among the existing plate with his mark is a seal salver of 1728 which is engraved by Charles Gardner for Sir Robert Eyre with the seal of the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas. The salver is accompanied by a matching example of 1735 by John Liger (Sotheby’s, London, 5 July 2017, lot 23). His other works include a wide range of silver such as a wall-light of circa 1720 (Sotheby’s, New York, 28 October 2004, lot 458); a kettle, stand and lamp of 1734, engraved with the coat-of-arms of Richard Turbutt of Doncaster (Christie’s, New York, 19 October 2004, lot 1061) and a beer-jug, engraved with the arms of Sir Robuck Lynch, 4th Bt. (Christie’s London, 29 November 2007, lot 570).

Of Edward Vincent’s work Grimwade notes ‘The author was in no doubt, however, about the silversmith’s surviving work, writing that he must have been ‘...of considerable rank producing high-quality hollow-ware, coffee-pots, cups and salvers. His masterpiece is with little doubt the superb oblong salver of 1729 of the Middle Temple of which Lamerie would not have been ashamed.’ (op. cit., p. 690). With that said his career was not without some problems as he would seem to have been declared bancrupt on two occasions, first in 1722 and again in 1743, though like his early career there remains some question if these references refer to him or another silversmith. He is variously recorded as working in Dean Street, Fetter Lane and later in the Strand, before ending up back in Dean Street. £1,000-1,500

A William III Silver Punch-Bowl, by Benjamin Pyne, London, 1697 tapering cylindrical and on spreading spiral-fluted foot, the body overall fluted and chased with foliage at the border, with reeded rim, later engraved inside with a coat-of-arms below a baron’s coronet and outside with a crest 28.5cm diameter, 15cm high, 40oz 14dwt, 1,265gr

The engraved crest is that of Dundas and the engraved coat-of-arms are those of Dundas impaling FitzWilliam below a baron’s coronet, for Sir Thomas Dundas, 2nd Baronet and later 1st Baron Dundas (1741-1820) and his wife Lady Charlotte FitzWilliam, (d.1833), daughter of William FitzWilliam, 3rd Earl FitzWilliam (d.1756).

Sir Thomas was the son of Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1st Baronet and his wife Margaret Bruce. He was a man of great means as well as a politician and, from 1794 when he was created Baron Dundas, a peer of the realm. His father had been a great collector of art and his son was to follow in his footsteps, for example commissioning Pompeo Batoni to paint his full-length portrait while on a grand tour. The portrait remains at Aske Hall, near Richmond, which he inherited from his father and which remains in the family of his descendants to this day. His son Lawrence was created 1st Earl of Zetland in 1838, at the time of the coronation of Queen Victorian in honour of the financial assistance he has given to the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Victoria’s parents. The first earl’s grandson, also Lawrence, was to be created 1st Marquess of Zetland in 1892.

A Continental Silver Watch-Case, Apparently Unmarked, Perhaps Augsburg, Germany, Circa 1650 in the form of a human skull, with suspension loop, the forehead engraved with memento mori symbols of an hourglass and a scythe, further engraved with the memento mori exhortations ‘Vita Fugit Ut Hora’ (life flies, like an hour) on the forehead; ‘Æterna Respice Caduca Despice’ (keep eternal matters in mind, shun ephemera) on the top; ‘Dum Viuis Viue ut Viuas’ (while you live, live to live) between and ‘Incerta Mortis Hora’ (the hour of death is uncertain) on the back of the skull, hinged at the jaw 44mm wide, 1oz 2dwt, 34.2gr

Provenance:

by tradition from a Northumberland country house, Alnwick Auctions, 13 December 2020.

This fascinating watch case is one of a known series produced in the 17th century and variously attributed to different countries of Europe. Like other memento mori works of art, such as paintings, watch-cases such as this were produced as a reminder of the inevitability of death and became particularly popular in the 17th century.

A very similar example, perhaps by the same hand, is in the collection of the Ashmolean museum (WA1947.191.58), bequeathed by J.Francis Mallet in 1947. It is engraved with identical memento mori exhortations as on the present example as well as the symbols of an hourglass and a scythe, though these symbols are depicted one above the other on the Ashmolean example and side by side on the present example. The Ashmolean example is later fitted with a verge watch of circa 1830 by the Norwich watchmaker Benjamin Russell. The case is described as possibly French though the present example tests at approximately 89% silver suggesting it to be more likely German as that would be below both the French and English standard of the time.

Another example of a case realistically formed as a human skull, with a movement by the Swiss watchmaker Jean Rousseau (16061684) was sold by Sotheby’s 16 April 2019, lot 28. Rousseau was the great-grandfather of the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau and was a well regarded watchmaker and a Master of the Clockmaker’s Company of Geneva. The case on this example, dated to circa 1650, is realistically formed but lacking the memento mori symbols and exhortations which appear on both the present example and that in the Ashmolean.

Another example, which can perhaps better help us identify the origin of this example, is one in the collection of the British Museum (1874,0718.41) which was previously in the collection of Sir Charles Fellows and was presented by his wife Lady Harriet Fellows in 1874. This example is engraved with exhortations ‘Vita Fugitur’ (life is fleeting); ‘Caduca Despice’ (look down upon a fallen thing); ‘Æsterna Respice’ (look upon eternity) and ‘Incerta Hora’ (the hour is uncertain) with an hourglass between. Helpful in determining its origin, has a movement by Joseph Conrad Vuolf of Donauwörth, Germany. David Thompson talks further about the British Museum example in his book Watches (London, 2008, pp. 46-47) and cites another example with a German movement, by Johann Georg Engelschalk and suggests that the cases were made in Augsburg which seems to also be likely for the present example.

The Arthur Burrell Trophy

A George VI Silver Sculpture of William Shakespeare, by Sir John Cass Institute, London, 1948, Designed and Modelled by Edward Bainbridge Copnall realistically modelled, on turned ebonised base with applied silver plaque engraved with an inscription and further metal shields engraved with recipient’s names and dates of presentation

56.5cm high including plinth, the figure 47cm high, 185oz 12dwt, 5,772gr

Literature:

‘To Hull Actor’ and ‘Shakespeare’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.

The Arthur Burrell Trophy was made to commemorate Flight Colonel Arthur C. Burrell who had volunteered for the RAF in 1939 and was killed in action over Sicily in 1943. He was described as ‘... a sincere artist and an actor of great promise who will be remembered for his performances in Hull with the Playgoers’ Society in “The Yellow Jacket”; in “Will Shakespeare” with the Sharrah Drama Club and “Fantastic Flight” for the Drama League”.’ (‘To Hull Actor’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.). The article goes on to note that ‘His friends and admirers are commemorating his work by the provision of this trophy to be competed for annually by teams in the Hull area. It is a figure of Shakespeare designed and modelled by Bainbridge Copnall and will be finished in silver. The statuette will cost 150 guineas.’ (‘Shakespeare’, The Hull Daily Mail, 27 August 1947, p. 3.)

The ‘Bainbridge Copnall’ noted in the article refers to Edward Bainbridge Copnall, M.B.E. (1903-1973), the noted British sculptor and painter. Copnall was born in Cape Town but moved to West Sussex as a child after the death of his mother. Both his father and an uncle were artists so it was perhaps inevitable that Edward would also pursue an artistic career, studying at both Goldsmiths Art School and the Royal Academy. While his initial interest was in painting he turned to sculpture in 1929 and was to receive an early commission, still among his celebrated works, to design the external sculptural scheme for the Royal Institute of British Architects headquarters in Portland place. At the time he designed the present work he was head of the Sir John Cass School of Art, a post he held from 1945 to 1953.

Andrew Penny M.B.E., the President of the Festival said “Whilst it may appear we are literally selling off the family silver, it makes much more sense to realise this statue as an asset than to present an extremely weighty trophy to a young person who might worry about the security implications of holding it for a year at home. We can do a great deal with the funds raised to achieve the great aims of the founders of the Festival Movement; “to pace each other on the road to excellence.”

The Hull Musical Festival was founded in 1906 to provide competitive classes in sections for Instrumental Music, Singing, Dance, Speech and Drama. It became a registered charity in 1978 (charity no. 507766) with the aims of ‘the advancement of the education of the public in the arts of music, dancing, literature and acting in all their branches’. The Arthur Burrell Memorial Trophy was presented to the Festival in 1948, to be awarded annually as a prize in the Speech and Drama section. The Festival continues to provide a well-supported music festival and a highly over-subscribed dance festival in Hull each year, but sadly, the Speech and Drama section fell out of fashion and has not been held for some years. The Festival awards a mixture of certificates, medals, trophies, cash prizes and bursaries to performers in music and dance, in addition to providing valuable feedback from professional adjudicators. In the coming months, the trustees will be carefully considering how to use the funds realised by the sale of the Arthur Burrell Trophy to further the aims of the charity and to best support the education and development of young performers from the local area.

Tennants are grateful to Deborah Roberts from the Goldsmiths’ Company library for her assistance in identifying the maker’s mark.

A George V Silver Caster, by Henry George Murphy, London, 1933, With Falcon Studios Mark in the Art Deco style, tapering cylindrical and on spreading foot, overall engraved with angular ornament, the bayonetmounted cover with baluster finial; Together With a similar salt-cellar, maker’s mark H&Sn, overstriking another, London, 1933 the caster 12.5cm high, the salt-cellar 72mm diameter, total weight 7oz 19dwt, 248gr (2)

Paul Atterbury and John Benjamin describe the years after 1932 as ‘a highly productive period [for Murphy]’ and ‘... [a] period defined by a significant change in style, particularly in the field of silversmithing, with a new emphasis on line engraving and the modernist and geometric forms of Art Deco...’ (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 30), which is certainly an apt description of the present caster. It has seemingly not been determined who was responsible for the engraving on these type of objects but George Taylor Friend, an accomplished engraver, was certainly known to not only be a friend of Murphy but also to have undertaken engraving work for him. It is interesting to see a very similar example in a photograph of a display of Murphy’s silver taken in the 1930s at the Red Rose Guild, Manchester (op. cit, p. 32). A nearly identical, though slightly later, example of the same model was sold at Woolley and Wallis, 30 April 2008, lot 800.

A Three-Piece George V Silver and Niello Dressing-Table Service, by Henry George Murphy, London, 1931, With Falcon Studios Mark in the Art Deco style, each piece with niello flowers and foliage, with niello initials ‘RA McQ’, comprising a hand-mirror; a hair-brush, each with carved ivory finial and a comb-back, teeth lacking the hand-mirror 25.5cm long (3)

Niello is a traditional technique which Murphy himself describes as ‘... dating back to the 1st century A.D.’ (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, p. 168), in the working notes for a lecture he presented at Goldsmiths’ Hall in 1935. He describes the process in some detail and his receipe in particular as using ‘3 parts silver, 2 parts copper and 1 part lead. The copper and silver and melted together in a crucible and when properly mixed the lead is added’. Other examples of dressing-table services by Murphy which are decorated with niello are known, for example a sixpiece service with very similarly carved ivory finials (op. cit., p. 116).

A George V Silver and ‘Gem’-Set Cigarette-Box, by Henry George Murphy, London, 1929, With Falcon Studios Mark in the Art Deco style, plain cylindrical, the base and cover each with twisted wire border, the pull-off cover set with a central cabochon malachite and five coral beads 85mm high, 6oz, 186gr

This form of cigarette-box or canister was popular with H. G. Murphy in the very late 1920s and into the 1930s. Each of the known examples is cylindrical and with a tight-fitting cover, as with the present example. It was a form which acted as something of a canvas to which Murphy applied ornament or decoration using the various techniques that formed such an important part of his oeuvre. Examples are known with applied geometric ornament and carved ivory or ‘gem’-set with Paul Atterbury and John Benjamin illustrating no fewer than six exampes (P. Atterbury and J. Benjamin, Arts and Crafts to Art Deco The Jewellery and Silver of H. G. Murphy, Woodbridge, 2005, pp. 92-93). Another example of 1929, decorated with niello is also known (Sworders, Stanstead Mounfitchet, 25 June 2013, lot 111). £1,000-1,500

An Elizabeth II Parcel-Gilt Silver Cup and Cover, by Asprey and Co. Ltd., London, 1965, Designed by James Porteous Wood, Craftsmen Keith Tasker

tapering triangular and on openwork base, engraved on two sides with inscriptions, the detachable cover openwork and with a gilt triform leafform finial, on conforming triangular rosewood base 34cm high including base, weight of silver 34oz 12dwt, 1,076gr

The inscriptions read ‘The Carreras Piccadilly Northern Cup Ripon August 1965 Won by Major L. B. Holliday’s “Finish Fast” (Fidalgo Javotte) 21-8-65’ and ‘Bilsdale Hunt Perpetual Challenge Cup’

James Porteous Wood was born in Edinburgh and went to the George Heriot School, though he left when he was only 14 as his interest lay in studying art, which he subsequently did at the Edinburgh College of Art. His early artistic expression was through watercolour painting, which he did around Ripon while based there as a non-commissioned office during the war. His talents were recognised in 1945 when he was elected to the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. It was perhaps as the Director of Art and Design for Asprey that he was to make his greatest impact with commissions such as an 18ct gold bowl which was presented to President Eisenhower and a model of the Dome of the Rock which was commissioned by King Hassan of Morocco. With a diameter of some 175cm the creation has been described as the most important piece of silver ever exported from the UK.

His works rarely appear on the market but what does appear shows a similar flare for design and the use of luxury materials. Two items by him, both marked for Asprey, were included in the exhibition Embellish: The Art of Hand Engraving, held at Tennants in the summer of 2023. They were both kindly loaned from the Pearson Silver Collection and included an 18ct white gold and quartz-set box made to commemorate the Chester Assay Office and a salver engraved as the Totalisator Spring Handicap trophy. Interestingly on each of those examples credit is given to those involved in the creation of the item, the salver for example also being made by craftsman Keith Tasker and the box engraved by Theodore C. F. Wise, a nod perhaps to his interest in encouraging young talent, which he also did by sponsoring an annual art prize at Mallaig High School.

Jewellery

Coloured Stones. It should be noted that gemstones are often treated to improve their appearance. Heating, for instance, can intensify the colour or transparency of sapphires and rubies, whilst oiling can improve the clarity of emeralds. The international jewellery trade generally accepts these methods. Once heated, the colour enhancement is permanent, though there may be some effect on the durability of the gemstone in question. Once a gemstone has been oiled, the process may need to be repeated in the future to maintain the clarity. Certificates. Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gemstones included in that particular piece. These certificates may have been obtained by Tennants or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Tennants and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.

Watches

All Lots are sold as seen, and the absence of any reference to the condition of a watch does not imply the lot is in good condition and without defects, repairs or restorations. Most watches have been repaired in the course of their normal lifetime and may now incorporate parts not original to them. We do not undertake any inspection of any watches prior to any Sale. We make no representation or warranty that any watch is in working order. As watches often contain fine and complex mechanisms, Prospective Buyers should be aware that a general service, change of battery or further repair work, for which they are solely responsible, may be necessary.

CITES Regulations/Ivory Act 2018

CITES-restricted items and Ivory Exempt items will be accompanied by a current CITES Article 10 licence/Ivory Exemption Declaration where applicable and the licence/exemption declaration number will be displayed within the original catalogue description (required by UK law). It is the sole responsibility of the buyer and/or contracted shipping agent to have in place the correct CITES re-export and import licences into the buyer’s chosen country before shipping can be undertaken.
