We have existed in Hull for 11 years now and this is issue 46. (Consistent eh?) Usual issues are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Christmas/ New Year.

This magazine exists because “WEAREHULL.”A unique, inspiring, challenging City that stands alone, like a light at the end of a tunnel on the edge of the U.K. It’s at the terminus of a long dark corridor that leads you away from the rest of that strange and disturbing world out there, into our enclave of true reality called HULL! place that harbours our special lifestyle, distinctive accent and our unique ‘on the edge’ sense of humour. The aim of this magazine is to reflect all of the above and to highlight and encourage all of the vibrancy and creativity that exists herein. In other words… you read Tenfootcity and you’re in tune with our magical part of the world. Our Editorial policy is one of total Social-Inclusion, non-discrimination, bloody (but peaceful) revolution and Freedom of Speech – but most of all, having a laugh!

It’s been some year for Hull hasn’t it? But as we say over the page, it doesn’t end here, let’s make sure 2018 is just as good. It’s great to be back with a new issue of Tenfootcity, have you missed us since the Summer? Yeah, we know, of course you have. Hope you all enjoyed The Sesh, The Pride Festival, Freedom Festival and everything else that’s been going on. Yep, there’s been that much happening that it’s impossible to catch it all. I do know some people who’ve had a damn good try though! Anyway, in this issue we reflect the final season of the 2017 programme, which is well under way now, entitled ‘Tell The World’ which is obviously a ‘call to arms’ – The special year itself may be drawing to a close, but because we’ve achieved the profile we have, as a City, it’s now the time to make sure that we maintain it into the future. So we need to tell the world “Hey, look, we’ve arrived now, but you definitely haven’t seen the last of us!

We are still Hull!”

This issue highlights some of the great things happening in the city during the last couple of months of the year and over the Festive season and it also carries a couple of interviews with two very high profile “pop-stars” which is not like us, is it? Tenfootcity has never been interested in the ‘cult of the celebrity’ we’re just interested in anyone who has some connection to Hull – so in these cases it’s acceptable, cos Roland Gift is a guy who grew up here, and still has family in the City and Shaun was playing here, so that means he’s had an effect on our City, which means he passes the Tenfootcity test of ‘meaningfulness’ (ie; there’s a relevance in there somewhere, in order to include him in the magazine!)

So, keep singing the praises of Hull everyone and enjoy yourselves over the coming Festive season, but please don’t forget, amidst all of the ‘feel good’ factor that many of us have experienced over this year, there are still thousands of people in our City who are struggling with poverty, homelessness, age problems & loneliness, ill health and mental health issues with no real care and support being provided to them due to the cuts to our Health & Social services, so please, if we all do what we can to help those immediately around us, it’ll make that festive period (that the rest of us are all enjoying) a little bit more bearable for them, knowing that someone cares about them. But of, course, although it always seems more pertinent at this time of the year, it’s actually something that we’ve all got to be doing all year round. We’re working-class people, we’ve got to pull together and support each other cos those bastards in power aren’t going to do anything to help. FOR THE MANY NOT THE FEW!!

WE ARE STILL HULL, THE U.K. CITY OF CULTURE UNTIL 2021!

WOW, It’s really been a fantastic journey hasn’t it? We believe it’s exceeded all expectations and inspired the City.

It’s been brilliant for Hull, 2017, but yep, it’s true, it’s NOT coming to an end. Until we hand over the baton to the next City that is going to take over, we are STILL officially the City Of Culture – so we can expect another 3 years of keeping the MOMENTUM going. The good news that as part of the legacy of 2017, the C.O.C. Organisation are leaving a team in place to help continue doing what we’ve all already been doing, and to carry on co-ordinating continuous events in the same vein that we’ve experienced throughout this year. So, continue to TELL THE WORLD about Hull. The final season is well under way right now and we cover a selection of the attractions in this issue as usual. The images on this page reflect and celebrate some of the things we’ve already experienced this year, but don’t worry – there’s still a lot more to come over the next 3 years!

HULL : GETTING IN THE PICTURE AT HUMBER STREET GALLERY

Elvis impersonators, pet snakes, football, bodybuilders, fish and chips, patty butties, Chip Spice, Hull Pie, specialist supermarkets, gastro cafe’s, teenagers and young families. This is how two world famous photographers have decided to capture Hull in 2017.

Olivia Arthur has travelled the world mainly detailing the East-West Cultural divide, but arrived in Hull and set about capturing the individuality, identity, and aspirations of our young people. Travelling here again and again, she established deep felt relationships with them in order to depict communities at work, rest and play with vivid clarity.

Martin Parr has used his innovative style and different ways of looking at the world to give iconic social commentary on a range of issues. His humour and experience are on display in his, somewhat garish, capturing of the culinary character, and the characters themselves, that define our city.

I realise we have plenty of excellent photographers working in and around this City. They do a great job of documenting lives, loves and loathes in Hull today. However, with this exhibition we get an outside view that is intriguing, compelling, and very enjoyable.

TORN. The effect of War on Women…

Also at the Humber Street Gallery is moving new exhibition that highlights the effects of war and conflict on women and girls around the world. The installation, called Torn, will be on display until Sunday 31 December and features photographs of wild poppies that have been picked, dried and torn apart by Hull-based photographer Lee Karen Stow.

Lee has travelled around the world to meet with women and girls who have lived through conflict and been left to pick up the pieces of lives torn apart and listened to their stories of being torn from their families, their homes and their lives.

She said: “These intimate encounters revealed an untold story that I really wanted to tell and show. These stories I have told from the perspective of the women who were there. Remembering these stories is not to negate the impact of war on men, but to acknowledge the suffering of women, and to recognise that it is often women, who are the ones left to pick up the pieces and carry on, providing for their families and often becoming active advocates for peace. Remembrance shouldn’t be for just for one day in November, or just about looking back, because it’s every day now that war and conflict are ruining the lives of thousands of women and girls whose lives are being torn apart. Women and girls are dying, experiencing sexual exploitation, harassment and trafficking; abuse and torture; and being torn displaced from everything they’ve known.”

Torn is open at Humber Street Gallery from 6 November – 31 December, admission is free.

MAKE TIME FOR TURNER

(The Turner Prize. Ferens Art Gallery. Until January 7th) You’ll have been to see The Turner prize exhibits already. Yes? Get yourself back there again. They need to be looked at and re-considered. The Turner prize is one of the banner moments of Hull 2017. It is a great coup for the City and a world renowned prize. Don’t let it pass you by. It’s not enough to say you had a quick look and it seemed ok. Don’t miss the cultural event on your doorstep because you didn’t have the time. This is your chance to view and judge for yourself the art on show before the prestigious Turner Prize is given on December 5th.

Yes, get there again... and again. It’s free and the very best thing about good art is that can be and should be viewed over and over. Look one more time and you will always find something interesting or challenging, something extra, that didn’t hit you on first inspection.

HURVIN ANDERSON is perhaps the nearest that this years prize gets to ‘traditional art’ his paintings are colourful, vibrant and attention-grabbing but can be easily passed by with a glance. Instead stop, look again, because the Birmingham artist allows you to be a voyeur as he attempts to demystify the art process by making the subject an artist and leaving grid-points used as guides.

With the work of Tanzania born LUBAINA HIMID it isn’t just the ceramics or the newspapers but the detail that convey the messages which themselves can be dated but are also timeless. Meanwhile, in ‘A Fashionable Marriage’ have another look at the relationship of the peripheral figures behind the Countess and the Lawyer recast as world leaders.

Finger smeared screens and wood-cut etchings are what you see in the work of ANDREA BUTTNER. The German artist would also ask you to consider the imprint we make on life, and the reduction of people to anonymous outlines. These are the sort of powerful provocations that need to be pondered on.

It is worthwhile viewing the fully scripted documentaries that ROSALIND NASHASHIBI from Croydon presents. You can perhaps garner enjoyment from the beauty of these films but hopefully they move you to consider locations and how we usually perceive diverse places such as Gaza on one level and a typical, yet inspirational, private garden on another.

Such variety. So much quality for inspection. Get back to Ferens, then. Look at the work of the Turner nominees again. Then make time to visit our famous old gallery more often during 2018 and beyond. It’s always there, even after The Turner Prize and City of Culture will have long departed. There’s always something worth seeing and I think you are missing out if you don’t.

Hull Comedy Festival 2017 is happening right now!!

Gary Wilkinson one of the Festival organisers said;

“It’s 20 days of jokes and belly laughs not to be missed. Showcasing a variety of acts and performances, including big TV names, family-friendly shows, award-winning performers, local and regional comedy talent, with a sprinkle of the hottest shows from the UK festival scene and also the Hullarious Free Fringe.”

Yeah, Hull’s funniest festival has returned to celebrate its 10th anniversary and there are events happening just about every night all over the city. Since John Gilbert first came up with the idea in 2007, it’s grown in stature, reputation and popularity and is now considered to be one of the most prestigious Comedy festivals in the country, attracting all of the very biggest names to perform at our largest venues, right down to the “fringe” events in the backrooms of pubs – which are just as good by the way!

Tenfootcity Magazine has been involved, of course, from the very beginning (as you would expect of us, ha ha!) and we have two events included in this current programme. (See over the page.)

At the conception it felt fairly underground and not a lot of people knew about it. Now we’re fairly confident that most people who get out and about in Hull are aware of it and thousands of you support it by attending the events – and having a great laugh at the same time of course! This rise in awareness and popularity can be attributed to the work of many people over the 10 years (particularly John Gilbert) but the success that we are currently experiencing, right now, this year, has been down to the hard work and dedication of the two new festival directors Gary Jenkinson and Jez Salisbury (both Comedians themselves) – and obviously also their team, who have all worked tirelessly to put a great programme of events on, that brings mirth and happiness to our city! (We’d like them to know that everyone involved really appreciates their great efforts this year – so we hope it’s the first of many that they take charge of.) Hull is a hotbed of Comedy talent itself actually, recently producing two Amused Moose winners, a Yorkshire Comedian of the Year, two So You Think You’re Funny finalists, a Giggles Live Improv champion and even the UK’s only bomb-disposal-expert stand-up comedian!

As you can see from the publicity on the facing page, we’re right in the middle of it now, as we speak.

Hopefully you’ve already been to a few events, but there’s still more to come, so go directly to their website to check out the programme and choose your nights! (Hopefully we’ll see many of you at our own events in the Old Town Sailmakers, which should both be great as usual.) He was also a semi-finalist in The Leicester Square Theatre new comedian competition 2015

JIM BAYES Likeable and cheeky Jim Bayes is an endearing performer with an eye for the silly. In the past 5 years, he has performed to huge festival audiences and even once did a show to one bloke in Huddersfield! His storytelling style makes him a hit with the audiences everywhere he goes.

Billy Lowther Plus-size Billy Lowther is originally from Sunderland but has made Hull his home. He has a dry wit which he expresses through sharp, well-crafted one-liners. Billy was winner of the Notts Comedy Review award for funniest ten minute set for 2015.

THE ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE… Have you tried out one of the most unique challenges in Hull yet?

We were going to go and do the full experience ourselves to cover it fully in this issue but unfortunately we’ve run out of space, so we’ll cover it in more depth in the New Year. The Escape Room, which is based on Ferensway, is a brilliant concept in which you can test yourself, your initiative and your intuitions, in order to try to Escape from various tricky situations.

Unlike messing around on a computer game, this is doing it for real!

You’ll actually be locked into places or situations and you’ll have to figure out how to get out or move on to the next level by using your physical, mental and communication skills to solve clues, tasks, riddles and puzzles in order to escape a real-life room. GEORGE NORRIS GIVES HIS PICTURES FOR DOVE HOUSE CALENDAR

A couple of weeks ago on Newland Avenue, Ed bumped into one of Hull’s proper local Documentary Photographer George Norris and he told me about the 2018 Calendar that he’s just contributed some of his pictures to, which is being sold, right now, in order to raise funds for Dove House Hospice. But before he allowed me to toddle off and buy one, he insisted on a quick picture of Ed alongside a passing local ‘character’ called Danny. (That’s what George does.)

Anyway here’s the impromtu shot and also an image of the Calendar. George’s pictures are inside as detachable postcards that you can send off anywhere you choose, in order to help “Tell The World!” It’s excellent and they’re only a ridiculously cheap price of a couple of quid or so. You can buy one for yourself from the Dove House shop on Newland and all proceeds go to the charity.

RE:DEFINED ART AT STUDIO ELEVEN The latest exhibition at Studio Eleven showcases five professional artists on their creative journey: Adele Howitt, Anna Kirk-Smith, Saffron Waghorn, Sarah Daniels and Sue Kershaw. Curated by Saffron, the exhibition is set up to encourage the artists to move out of their comfort zone, to challenge the disciplines that have categorised them for many years. She explained, “As creatives, our role in society is to observe, comment, and question the world around us using and manifesting those observations into many different art forms. Diverse, exciting and thought provoking, the art created by these artists, pushes the boundaries of conformity and enables powerful yet necessary change.”

THE HULL SHOP – ‘TELLING THE WORLD!’ The Hull Shop started back in 2013 by Paul John, following the success of a facebook & twitter page promoting Hull called ‘There’s No Place like Hull’ which now has a social media following of over 25,000 people and reaches over 2 million people around the world.

(Bloody ‘ell – I think they can afford a bigger Ad in this local magazine then! – Ed.) Paul told us “At the time there were very few Hull products around and I wanted to showcase Hull’s quirky sense of humour. Five years on and we’ve now exported to over 100 countries around the world. We also stock at a couple of Hull independents - Panache on Chants Ave, and Across The Continents on Prospect Street (next to Boom Bar) and we also sell some of our products on Humber Street at the Christmas markets. The website attracts Hull expats from around the globe and we often receive messages of appreciation for putting Hull on the map and spreading Hull’s unique sense of humour. This year our Hull Retro 2018 calendar features LA’s, Yankee Burger, Sydney Scarborough, Boothferry Park and even Dead Bod! We are just about to release a Hull dictionary which features over 30 popular Hull phrases many of which are illustrated. HULL COMMUNITY SHOP – AFFORDABLE FOOD PROJECT Some don’t realise (or even accept!) just how much some people are really struggling to survive in this current society, that we’re having to endure until the Tories finally self-destruct and Jezzer comes cantering in, on his white charger, to save us all! But seriously, it is true, which is illustrated by the massive rise of food banks over the past few years. People are really that desperate in certain situations. Which is why the Hull Community shop is a great initiative. Open from 10am-5pm Monday to Friday, the aim is to provide nutritious and affordable food for individuals and families who are suffering from food poverty and is open to the whole community, offering fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, bread & confectionary in return for a ‘pay-as-you feel’ donation. All donations to the HCS from the wider community is put back into the project to fund EMS’ purchase of tinned goods, cereal, tea and coffee, toiletries etc, thus helping the HCS to be sustainable. Since it opened in July 2016 there have been thousands of visits from the local and wider local community. On average 10 to 15 people access the HCS on a daily basis. They are grateful to receive support, in the form of donations of store surplus, from Marks & Spencer, Tesco, One Stop and Sainsbury’s, as well as fresh food donations from Dennis Butler Wholesalers and tin collections from Sacred Heart church. Any donations are always massively appreciated by them and their members (customers!), the project relies on the generosity of local people and organisations in order to serve the local community.

PARKER’S PUB BACK AS IT WAS! This well known and popular pub on Anlaby Road, has re-opened under new management and is back to its original name after a bit of a daft name-change idea. (That sounds familiar!) The new management team are already familiar with the place because Julie had been a manageress there, for the previous tenants, for 3 years and Kriss had been the entertainments and promotions agent for the same length of time, so they obviously know what they’re doing! THE NEW AGE OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Everyone seems to be a Photographer these day don’t they? Photography is now probably the most popular and easily accessible form of expression these days because of the technological advances that puts, in the hands of just about everyone, a means to capture images of their lives and surroundings instantly, without really giving too much thought to it. Purists would argue that this is not really a good thing and could demean the “art-form” but then others may argue that the simple accessibility is emancipating to the masses who click constantly with no real thought of ideas, concepts or composition. The debate will continue. Tenfootcity’s Wes Foster makes his comment and highlights the work of Graeme Oxby….

After many weeks of bringing together photographers and people with cameras the City Of Culture project The Beermat Photography Festival is set to open on the 15th November, across many of the city’s best venues, including Pave, Polar Bear and Larkin’s, amongst others.

All the images gathered, which will be taken from the hashtag #HullPhoto2017, will be collected and then the favourites will be chosen by the legendary Martin Parr before being printed onto beermats and spread around the cities bars and pubs of Hull for everyone to see, and most importantly, engage with.

It’s rare to see something so driven towards pushing photography as an art practice into accessible, and interesting spaces, allowing the work itself to bridge the gap between people and art, creating conversation outside of white walls and the discussion of ideas between people in a more frank space. This discourse is the design of Graeme Oxby, lecturer over at Lincoln and himself a photographer based in Beverley. His work itself reflects this same ambition of bringing together people and culture, especially apparent in his most current project, ‘The Kings of England’, bringing together a documentation of Elvis impersonators across the country, much being set in Hull and the North.

Striking a distinct balance between being an outsider looking in and also being part of the community, The Kings of England is a distinctly intimate look at what is, and is staying strong, as a phenomena of the past.

Following attending a gathering of impersonators at Brid Spa the surrealism captivated him. Elvis is a working class idol, whilst at the same time being a vague representation of the death of the American dream, a lost vision of blue skies and white picket fences allowing for suburban living. There is something uniquely captivating about seeing an abstract concept embodied so heavily – and so well – within a group of people in a way that is both close to them as well as distant. Lookout for the kickstarter which will be funding the project and the subsequent book sometime after Christmas.

‘Theatric’ull’ - On Stage In Hull

So, what’s on the menu? Jazz, Pop, Folk, Crooning, and Rock with, and without, the Roll. Oh yeah, there’s also Christmas in there too.

Setting the benchmark for female singer/song-writers was Carole King (New Theatre 21st - 25th November) ‘Beautiful’ is the inspirational story of the ‘Tapestry’ lady’s rise to stardom. Beginning as one half of the audacious hit songwriters Goffin & King and continuing with the classic tunes that we all croon along to such as ‘(You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman’, ‘Take Good Care of my Baby’, ‘You’ve Got a Friend’, and ‘It Might As Well Rain Until September’.

‘Beautiful’ is a great story and a lot of brilliant songs but if you fancy something a bit more rocking then, obviously, Elvis P. is your man. ‘The Elvis Years’ (Hull City Hall 26th November) includes archive footage, and all the hits to tell the story of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll from driving a truck in Tupelo to the big Production Las Vegas concerts.

But, if you just want to play it cool with some dudes you probably need to join the Las Vegas crowds in time for ‘Christmas with the Rat Pack’ (New Theatre November 28th.) Imagine yourself in The Sands Hotel, with Frank, Dean, Sammy and the gang. They are imbued with the power of positive drinking and regaling the audience with ‘The Lady is a Tramp,’ ‘Mr Bojangles,’ ‘That’s Amore’, ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin,’. ‘Let it Snow; and ‘White Christmas,’. Now, that’s a damned swell way to celebrate Christmas.

Another worthwhile way to enjoy a Christmas treat would be with Kate Rusby (Hull City Hall 2nd December.)

This finest interpreter of traditional song, mixes the old with her own original and beautifully affecting songs.

Her Northern wit and emotively engaging singing will be backed by her band plus brass quintet to send everyone home full of joyous and exuberant, traditional, Christmas spirit. Yep. Joyous and exuberant is exactly as everyone felt after the two sold out Holy Holy (Hull City Hall - 5th December) shows earlier in the year.

Due to phenomenal demand the band, featuring Tony Visconti, Woody Woodmansey, and Glenn Gregory, are back in Hull to reprise their rendition of Bowie’s ‘The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars’.

Visconti was of course Bowie’s producer, Woodmansey the Spiders’ drummer, and Gregory the vocalist with Heaven 17. Catch the authentic sound of classic early-period David Bowie while you can.

Moving away from the hip swaying, pelvis revolution to the Russian Revolt of exactly a century ago. Hear Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich as performed by The Hull Philharmonic Orchestra (Hull City Hall 25th November) on offer in 1917:Revolution. Soloist Callum Smart (violin) and Conductor Andrew Penny lead the orchestra through the heroic and epic, grand and eloquent, pastoral and bombastic, works of two of Russia’s great composers.

And, so now to Christmas. This year you can see the big screen version of the truly iconic, film ‘The Snowman’ (Hull City Hall - 30th December.)

The screening is beautifully backed by world class musicians playing live and includes the ever evocative ‘Walking in the Air’ sung by a local child soloist. The extra special performance includes a visit from the Snowman himself plus narration by Joanna Lumley.

Hull Dickens wrote ‘A Christmas Carol’ from life experience.

That’s why it can seem so real whilst still being such a far-fetched fantasy. The author had witnessed both the bright and black sides of the festive season. His once fairly wealthy father was put in ‘debtors jail’ forcing the then 12 year old to work for very low pay, amongst the damp, the dirt and the rats, in a boot-blacking factory.

Like poor old Bob Cratchit he was very grudgingly given just one day off at Christmas.

Pantomime at New Theatre promises to be better than ever this year. Darren Day, Brendan Sheerin, Charlie Hardwick and co take to the newly redeveloped, bigger and much improved theatre in ‘Peter Pan’ (New Theatre December 7th - 31st.) The revitalised venue is now able to include spectacular high-flying effects, unmissable underwater 3D sequences which will take the audience on an adventure deep into the ocean, stunning scenery, and extra special effects, plus many other aspects that will make this the greatest and best Christmas show of all time! Accompany the Darling family and the fairies, pirates, mermaids and other children to Neverland for music, laughter, fun and a most wonderful time. HULL TRUCK. Scrooge : A Suitable Case For Treatment It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Celebrate it well. Go for it. As usual there are plenty of fun-filled festive events to tickle your tinselled fancy. So, perhaps, choosing to spend time with a miserly, old curmudgeon, whose name is synonymous with all things tight-arsed, mean, and piteous, doesn’t load your goodie sack. It really should. ‘A Christmas Carol’ is, and always will be, a fantastic narrative whether told on page, stage, or film. It is a gloriously redemptive tale. Undoubtedly the greatest fiction ever told. The story of Scrooge is so perfectly formed that it survives its deep, and dark, and dank details of death, ghosts and ill-will to all men, to become a life-affirming festive favourite for all the family. Hull Truck’s latest version is set to be a highlight of Christmas ‘17.

Truth always lies beneath the best Pantomimes and are the best stories. This latest ‘Scrooge’, with the added original touch of having the misanthrope based in Hull, has been adapted by writer Deborah McAndrew to strongly highlight the novel’s main messages; they are that generosity triumphs over inequality and how bad deserves a chance to be good.

This is what proper panto should be about. Something for all the family. Firing young imaginations, whilst answering their moral inquisitiveness. Adults will relish the realism and an attack on the selfish greed still so prevalent today. (It’s reflects the political struggles of today really doesn’t it? – Ed.) Perhaps, better still, everyone can appreciate the fun, the humour, the silliness and the feeling of being engrossed in a really good, old fashioned, yarn.

So, this Christmas get in the swing with the most loved, and most famous, festive tale of all time. There’ll be so much happy clapping, silly singing, hip-hip-hurraying, booing and braying in a panto filled deep with both comedy and pathos that even the most mean-spirited, irascible, bah-humbuggers amongst you, will have a fine old Panto time which is, essentially, just as Dickens, the father of the modern Christmas originally intended. Every issue Dr. Lee will highlight his selection of movies from a particular genre, or era, that you may not have seen and he recommends that you should try to check these great examples out. Up to now, he’s covered “Sixties Films,” and “Classic Gangster Movies” - and now, in tandem with the current ‘Halloween Fever’ he introduces you to a selection of the greatest Horror movies of all time.

Possession

Dracula

Possession is a psychological horror depicting the breakdown of a marriage. When Mark (Sam Neill) returns home from a spying assignment abroad, his wife, Anna (Isabelle Adjani), tells him that she wants to end their relationship. As Anna’s behaviour is becoming increasingly disturbed and violent, the film revisits Roman Polanski’s Repulsion and its psychosexual terror predates Lars von Trier’s Antichrist. Like Antichrist, Possession suggests that sex dwells in the dark space somewhere between madness and pure malevolence.

Adaptations of Bram Stoker’s gothic novel have become a cornerstone of horror cinema and I could have chosen any one of several versions here. Notable reworkings of the Dracula legend include F.W. Murnau’s silentexpressionist masterpiece Nosferatu (1922), Tod Browning’s Dracula (1931) made for Universal, and Warner Herzog’s Nosferatu The Vampyre (1979). I also admire Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) in which Francis Ford Coppola upped the eroticism, added a few postmodern flourishes (Gary Oldman’s Count anachronistically sporting a pair of very cool modern shades) and drove a stake through the heart of cinema’s camp interpretations of Stoker’s novel. But I have opted for Terence Fisher’s version as I had to include an example from Hammer Studios famous cycle of horror films.

(Andrzej Zulawski, 1981)

Featuring an extraordinary scene of possession on a subway which lasts only three minutes but seems to drag on horribly for an eternity, the film has the brilliant Adjani spawn a monster- a slimy tentacular beast- designed by Carlo Rambaldi, the special effects maestro responsible for ET and Alien. If this isn’t gross enough for you, Anna then proceeds to have sexual intercourse with the repulsive creature, slaying anyone who comes between her and her monstrous lover, the visceral elements of the film recalling the early work of David Cronenberg.

Possession was banned in the UK during the ‘Video Nasty’ clampdown but has subsequently earned a cult following. The film has been championed by the critic Mark Kermode but regularly fails to register on any discussion of top horror films; a baffling omission as Possession should be on every horror aficionado’s must-watch list.

(Terence Fisher, 1958)

Hammer’s output may have diminished in quality over the years but, at their best, the studio seduced and terrified audiences bored with the “no sex we’re British” ethos of the nation’s cinema. In Dracula, Christopher Lee’s reinterpretation of the Count rejects previous depictions of the vampire as an aged, corpse-like monster. Lee’s Dracula is aristocratic, suave and charismatic, utilising his sexual magnetism to get into the bedrooms of his virginal victims. For its time, Hammer’s horror was explicit.

The vivid red blood flowed copiously and cinemagoers worldwide lapped it up, making Hammer the most lucrative international horror studio of all time. And, in pairing Lee with Peter Cushing as Dracula’s nemesis- the vampire hunter, Van Helsing- Hammer gave us the most acclaimed horror duo to ever grace the screen.

It could be claimed that the myths surrounding The Exorcist- the deaths during production, the real-life exorcism of the “cursed” shooting set, the vomiting and fainting during screenings- have overshadowed its gut-wrenching power to shock. However, Friedkin’s classic remains the most disturbing horror film ever made and watching the film has become almost a rite of passage for any horror fan. So, if you’ve not seen it yet, then you need to do so. The power of Christ compels you.

Suspiria

John and Laura Baxter (Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie) move to Venice after the tragic drowning of their young daughter. Here they encounter two sisters, one of whom is a blind psychic who says she has contacted their daughter and that she wants to tell them not to grieve her death. John, a sceptic who refuses to believe the clairvoyant, soon has unsettling visions of his own.

Argento is one of the best-known directors of Italian ‘Giallo cinema,’ an exploitative and lurid horror/thriller/ crime hybrid which was an antecedent of the slasher movie. Suspiria takes from these elements but adds an extra blood-soaked dollop of the supernatural into the mix. The story concerns the arrival at a German dance academy of a young ballerina, Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper). The school becomes the scene of a series of grisly murders which Bannion believes may be linked to black magic, discovering evidence of a witches’ coven at the academy.

(Nicolas Roeg, 1973)

He sees a little girl, wearing a red-hooded jacket like the one worn by his daughter at the time of her death, wandering around the city. Is this the spirit of the girl watching over her parents? Or is it simply the fevered imagination of the father torn apart by grief? Or could it be the harbinger of something even worse yet to come?

Both Sutherland and Christie are superb in the leading roles but the real star of Don’t Look Now is the desolate, out-of-season Venice itself, eerily shot by Anthony Richmond. Similarly, the sound production is magnificent, capturing the ghostly echoes and whispers of the ethereal city. Combined with the cinematography and Roeg’s distinctive editing style, the film’s oppressive sense of dread is maintained right up to its shattering climax.

(Dario Argento, 1977)

Featuring a distinctive score by the Italian progressive-rock band, Goblin, the film is notable for its extravagant visuals and incredible set design.

A gruesome, thrilling, artistic and highly stylised example of the ‘Horror’ genre.

Suspiria

Roeg’s chiller is a film about human emotion, love and grief as much as the paranormal and it is made even more haunting and affecting because of it.

ROLAND - WON’T YOU COME ON HOME? Roland Gift is one of the most successful artists, both musically and theatrically, to have his roots in Hull.

With a string of hit pop records behind him, as well as an illustrious acting career, including a number of iconic film parts, he’s about to return home for the opening night of his latest tour to launch his new album. His reason for his return to the music scene was described by himself, “I was asked to join Jools Holland and his big band as a guest singer touring with them for a year, it was alot of fun and made me want to take my own group out to play.”

‘Roland Gift’ is a massively recognisable name now after your 30 years in the music, theatre and film industry, so what brings you back into the music and recording industry right now?

“Well about 3 years ago, I started doing shows more regularly and I sort of realised that something felt right about it again. I felt like I still had ‘something to say.’ I’ve been working on a musical play called entitled ‘Return to Vegas’ and there’s a definite link between the music I was writing for that with the material I’ve written for the new album.”

In a beautiful twist of fate, he’s starting this tour at the venue when he first came to prominence in our City, in the late Seventies and early Eighties. It’s in a place where I met him many times in the Punk/Ska/Mod era. It’s on Saturday December 2nd. The venue is, of course, Hull’s famous Welly Club.

The last time I interviewed Roland was for a forerunner to this magazine called ‘In The City’ (before we became ‘Pulse Magazine’ then onto Tenfootcity,) which would have been at least 25 years ago in Pearson Park! It was great to talk to him again after all of these years. Roland seems to have matured very peacefully. He was very polite and softly spoken and it was a pleasure to talk to him about his life and career and to find out more about “Where he is now.”…

So how would you describe the new music you’re creating now then?

“I think the current style will have reminders of my past within it. I think people who liked the Fine Young Cannibals will like the new stuff. Someone came into the dressing room after a gig recently and she said “I really like that ‘Black Pyschadelia’” which I was quite pleased about. That was Malu Halassa actually, Andy Cox’s wife.

The most important thing is, I want people to feel the ‘soul’ within it. Soul is a funny word, all kinds of music can have soul. If it touches you and inspires you, any kind of music is entitled to be called Soul music. And it is definitely poppy as well, maybe because it’s melodic, it’s poppy in the way Bacharach-David songs are poppy - they’re very soulful as well.” The great Otis Redding remains Roland’s original inspiration.

That was the thing that brought us together and Otis was probably my favorite singer, and he still is, so those influences will definitely be there. One day a neighbour gave me three records, Otis Blue, Otis Sings Soul Ballads and a Greatest Hits of Otis Redding. I’d heard him, when I was a kid - my sister was a fan, and it had an effect on my musical development.”

Let’s look back on how it all started then Roland.

I remember the old days when we all used to hang around Mrs. Wilson’s Welly Club and the old Silhouette and your very early days with the Akrylykz.

I think we even did a ‘Rock Against Racism’ gig together. You had your hair dyed blond at the time and we used to call you ‘Guiness.’ That sort of thing wouldn’t be allowed these days, so how did you feel about that nickname at the time?

“Ha ha, what’s wrong with it?

It’s was just very descriptive and creative. No I liked it.

I thought it was quite a cool nickname actually.”

People Of Hull So, from those early days how did the music career all start for you from that point and then develop to the level it eventually did?

“Well actually the first band I was in, was called ‘Blue Kitchen.’ We used to rehearse in my friends kitchen at number 73 Morpeth Street (Roland did tell me the names of the band members, he remembered them well, but unfortunately I didn’t write them down, but I think one of them was called Lou) … and it was painted a very vibrant blue, so the name was obvious! Then a little later, a guy called Fred approached me in the Welly and asked if I wanted to join his band. They were all at Hull Art College (I wasn’t myself) and the name was Akrylyk Vyktymz – which they choose to reflect the fact that, because of all the cuts to the education budgets, they weren’t allowed to use the more expensive oils and so were forced to work with acrylics. Ha ha! Three of us were singers and 3 were on Sax. (I remember getting their first record at the time “Spider Man” – I wish I still had it!) A big champion of the local music scene at the time was Thurston Binns and he was sending out our Demo tapes for us, to various people, and when The Beat played at Welly they were given one, I think by Steve B. They liked our sound and we ended up getting a support slot on tour with them, which made that first single quite prominent. I obviously got to know David Steele and Andy Cox, so when the Beat split up they asked me to join them in a new band. That band became The Fine Young Cannibals and our first hit was...

TENFOOTCITY ROLAND GIFT INTERVIEW CONTINUED... ...‘Johnny Come Home’ in 1985 which made us quite successful from the beginning and we were actually named as The Radio 1 ‘Band Of The Year’ in 1986.

Everything escalated from there really.”

So what did it feel like becoming an instantly famous Pop-Star in a short space of time and did you enjoy your ‘heyday’ period?

“I didn’t feel any different really. It’s just that other people seem to have a different approach to you. You just notice people looking at you a lot more which can be uncomfortable at first but you just get used to it and adapt to the circumstances. Today is my Heyday actually.

I look back on those times with affection of course, but I don’t feel any different now and I didn’t feel any better when I was playing Concorde. I think I’ve just stayed the same throughout, I hope, and I’m enjoying writing and performing just as much as ever.”

Obviously to most people you’ll be associated most with that first massive Fine Young Cannibals hit, ‘Johnny Come Home’ and also, later, “She Drives me Crazy.” Will you be playing some of those songs alongside your new music?

“Yeah, of course, they’ll be a part of the set. I know that people expect that, so they’d probably be disappointed if we didn’t!”

As well as being a successful musician, you’ve also had an illustrious acting career Roland. Was it something you always wanted to do or was it just an opportunity that you got offered at the time, which meant that you got lead roles in great films like Sammy & Rosie Get Laid and Scandal?

“Actually I always considerd myself an actor first and foremost. I came from an acting background. I’d started under the tutorship of the late Pam Della at Hull Community Theatre Workshop, so it was something I’d always wanted to do. In fact when I first went to London it was to pursue an acting career rather than one in music. I don’t consider myself to be either really. I don’t have an agent or anything like that, I just like doing it all myself and if the right opportunities come along I’m interested, and as I said I’m writing my own theatrical stuff at the moment as well performing as a musician.”

Can I ask you a little bit about your personal life now please Roland, because I know our readers will be interested?

“Yeah, no problem at all…”

Okay, since first leaving Hull where have you lived over the years and where are you based now?

“Well, obviously I first headed off to London, but during the Cannibals time I spent time in various other places.

Are you married?

“Yeah, I’ve been married forover 25 years. (I think that’s what he said.) My wife is actually from New Zealand which is the reason I was living there for a while.”

Have you got any kids?

“Yeah, I’ve got two sons. They’re 26 & 27 now. They’re both in the creative and performing arts as well. One of them is actually a circus performer and he appeared at a production in Hull quite recently.”

What do remember most about your early days in Hull?

“Well first of all, I’m not originally from Hull, I was actually born in Birmingham. I came to Hull as a young boy and basically grew up here. I still come to Hull fairly regularly though, because my sisters still live there.”

(Roland’s late-Mum was originally from Ganstead. She was the very well-known, and much-loved local character, Pauline Gift who ran the famous “Pauline’s Gift shop” on Princes Avenue.)

How did you feel about Hull when you first arrived then, compared to Birmingham? What were your early experiences here and have you seen it changing and developing over the years from a distance? And what do you think of it now?

“I always liked Hull from the very beginning. I liked the friends I made and the environment, but it did feel quite strange when I realised there weren’t many other Black people here at the time! I’d grown up as a child in a much more mixed place, so it was a bit of a culture shock I suppose, but I have to say that I was accepted here very well and I can’t ever recall encountering any racism. Yeah, I’ve seen the changes happening in Hull and I think some are good and some not so good. Of course it’s a lot more of a cosmopolitan mix of people, nationalities and languages which is a good thing and, of course, there’s a much wider choice of food there now, then when I was younger – I remember being excited about getting the very first curry or pizza in the old days but now it’s all easily available of course. Being used to London and good food, I have to say that I’ve experienced some good new places in Hull, but there again I’ve eaten in others where I wish I hadn’t! Ha ha. I look back on those times fondly and I liked the Park Avenue days.

I had a good group of friends and things were starting to happen in Hull, there was a lot of creativity and activity going on. Maybe that was really the beginning of it all.”

I couldn’t agree more Roland, having been there myself at the time. Thanks very much for such an open conversation and I look forward to seeing you soon back on stage in Hull, in our old haunt of all places.

Music’Ull” – the Music Culture of Hull

MUSIC’ULL! A selection of some of the best current music associated with Hull.

MY PLEASURE: DOMESTIC BLISS The idea of writing about the banality of modern life is an ever-appealing draw, but very rarely is it done so well. Finding that eloquent balance between the romanticism of the ordinary and the very same strangeness that accompanies it, is something near impossible to do, without becoming either a detached sneering observer, or without becoming removed enough for it to be a worthwhile observation. Pulp’s ‘Common People’ probably wraps it up best, and it’s lead to a long tradition of using a relatable voice to talk about, well, reality. My Pleasure is one of the few acts that seems to be able to grasp this balance, and play with it in a way which is constantly engaging, around half the album uses this observational lyrical style, while the rest seems to be geared towards slightly coy, tongue-in-cheek, tracks.

As ever with My Pleasure, guitars are rife - musically one of the main driving forces behind the compositions, though at the same time Domestic Bliss has seen a reduction in the reliance on them, instead using drums to take a more prominent place within the mix, alongside the vocals which take the real precedent. Whereas previously the work seemed to be a little more ‘math-rock’ orientated (and there are still signs) – incredibly precise riffs that were timed down to a tee, now more feedback results in a slightly more garage rock sound, rougher around the edges and at times clashing slightly with the precision of the synths, something especially noticeable in the track ‘Z Cars’, though in many ways this is one of the most interesting reflections on the modern banality which the album is based upon, a messiness conflicting directly with the angular cleanness of two opposing compositional styles. As one of the most productive and active musicians within the city, My Pleasure has for a long time held a place as one of the more avant-garde acts on the music circuit around Hull – popping up from time to time with catchy melody in hand and accompanying eloquent guitar riff.

VANISHING.Music Art born in Hull.

We met after Gareth had just returned from the Netherlands, playing a few dates as guest vocalist with the band Gnod, having been in the country for only about two hours and one of the first things that he said to me when we met was that he liked to cram things in and this comes across when you research him. It seems that there is little he hasn’t been involved in, and it becomes an ever-growing wormhole of different projects, though all lyrically-driven and brought together by working with a certain group of people.

Vanishing is the bringing together of many different parts. The music is used as a way to give place to the vocals, which is the punctum of the project. Using something closer to spoken word, there is a slight jarring between the lyrics and the music in the mix. This dichotomy creates something interesting entirely within that in-between space – a claustrophobia, a clinging, that brings an intensity and discomfort to the record. At times the music and the lyrics seem to come together, and this brings forward an incredible ability to create music in an almost disharmony, but also push the listener into these places that are hard to reach, and push you further as a listener. Abstracted sounds thrust into the premise of a loosely defined song; don’t mistake this for a pop record.

Like Gareth himself, the lyrics are direct and honest – there is no vagueness, something that probably comes from a working-class background growing up in East Hull. This honest engagement with the listener is integral to the work: there is no smoke and no mirrors, though it may be slightly abstract, but that down to earth, to the point attitude, creates many access points and broadens the idea of what the avant-garde can be, and who it can appeal to. He’s someone, that like many of the most interesting musicians, is very cautious about where he takes influences from, only buying a handful of records a year, so as not to become just reactive to everything around him, and that’s important to create something that is undoubtedly stand-alone, arguably avant-garde, but most definitely away from the trend. He seems to do this by operating and collaborating with an array of like-minded people.

Over time Gareth says his music has become more personal, and, through that, closer to him and more of a form of expression than anything else. When asked how he would describe himself he uses the one term that allows anything, without carrying the baggage of needing to fit into a specific place or time: Artist.

It’s easy to see this: the music isn’t designed to fit into any genre that you’d like to place it in, but neither is it really difficult to access. Lyrics are imaginative and dark, but without using the usual tropes to get across the ideas.

Movement is important in his composition. This movement, whether it be the constancy of the percussion attacking within the track, or whether it be those fleeting glimpses of synth seeming to swing into the track as they fade in and out of prominence, is key to allowing the words to fall easily away into the album with the music mirroring the pace and insistency within his writing.

With Vanishing gigs rare, but on the horizon, this is another one of those rare albums/projects/acts, whatever you want to call it, that comes along every once in a while and does something really special, creating a record which just fits into a space where there was previously a void. The intensity can be unsettling at times, but that’s sort of what it’s designed to be, and through that design there is something somewhat masterful about it.

THE HOLY ORDERS. “TOO LOUD FOR DOGS!” The Holy Orders were first told that their amps were too loud in 2006. The combination of their strong songs, laden with melodies, massive amounts of energy and huge dynamics has gained them a reputation as one of Hull’s most ferocious and exciting live bands. LA BETE BLOOMS - ‘Saw you on the TV’ Quite easily one of the most hard-working bands in Hull, La Bête Blooms hardly ever seem to be not releasing something. As ever their dynamic sound flutters across styles, their tracks are constantly becoming lyrically more interesting, seeming to deal with ease, the bigger concepts and even larger ideas. Over time, as they’ve become more engaged with their garage rock roots, their sound has gained more depth and gone from strength the strength, as cutting, edged guitars weave together complex melody, after complex melody, rich with dynamics.

La Bête Blooms have always been one of the staples of the Hull music scene in the last few years – with their live gigs gaining them a stellar reputation across the county because of the almost intimidating energy that they play with, especially in intimate small venues; the raw and absolute sound is rivalled by only a few others. (See above! – Ed.) With their latest, ‘Saw You On The TV’, they have strengthened what they do best with catchy, distorted hooks that pull you in and keep you there. As lead singer Mawer develops vocally, so does his ability to pen absolute angst, without it feeling like the ‘teenage angst’ of badly written songs.

MEETING SHAUN RYDER ON BRANSHOLME!

Black Grape recently played in ‘Branny Senner’ on Hull’s famous estate. Tenfootcity writer Sydell describes her experience and was also lucky enough to have a chat with famous frontman Shaun Ryder…

Formed in the early 90’s following the demise of The Happy Mondays, Black Grape’s debut platinum-selling album ‘It’s Great When You’re Straight …Yeah’, bore such classics as ‘Reverend Black Grape’ and ‘In the Name of the Father.’ Now Shaun Ryder and the band are back together for the release of their first album in 20 years, ‘Pop Voodoo.’ This whole experience all started for me with a day trip whilst touring the coast of The South Of France up to San Sebastian, heading back for an afternoon of dining out. Scrolling Facebook I saw Hull Photographer George Norris had posted a link about Black Grape at Branny Center! It was one of those moments that was a sit-up and perk-up thing, I followed the link in haste and fury because I didn’t want it to sell out before I logged in and picked up a couple of tickets, cos I really was that excited. The most surreal gig Hull and Grape will ever experience, to my thinking, and I couldn’t wait for it to happen. Back when the Monday’s were at their height, music felt much more relatable and touchable. I’m not shitting you, there was a huge connection. I was really interested to see more and more people reacting to Black Grape playing Hull. I saw Hull writer Nick Quantrill’s status so I added to his thread that I’d like to meet them as I have never seen Shaun in the Happy Monday’s or Black Grape before and was really hoping to get to the gig. As a Kid, I used to creep downstairs to the living room to watch The Word which was a ground-breaking music and ‘yoof-culture’ show on Channel Four, with Terry Christian, which had the odd fashion faux pas. Youtube will help you younglings find out about that! Oddly, kids now want to mimic that fashion, no fucking chance, we’ve been there and done that so there’s no way you’ll be able to pull it off. Even we struggled do it ourselves at the time!

Anyway, a gig in my home town Hull, in Hull’s notorious Branny Cenner, which is always given a bad wrap all over the city, featuring the one-and-only Shaun Ryder.

You couldn’t make it up! I was hoping all the pompous people who want to mock the gig, or the area, stayed away and just accept the fact that it was a special occasion to remember. That’s how it turned out, because those of us who were there loved it. After mentioning I’d like to meet Black Grape, local writer Russ Litten put me on the right track with Anita, the tour manager, who arranged an ‘interview’ with Shaun for me. I couldn’t quite believe that I would be interviewing Shaun. He basically played a huge part in my childhood. Look I’m talking musically here, I’m not deluded. My teens might have been full of many blurs but it had hype and energy. Monday’s played a role in that, gladly. Then I got to thinking what on earth do I say? How do I start a conversation off with a man who I’ve always wanted to see play, let alone talk to. A one on one Q & A... not daunting at all!

Let’s keep calm I thought, but sorry it didn’t really turn out that way, cos here’s me trying to be cool with a man as cool as fuck. HELP... It turned out to be just more of a friendly chat really!

They’ve played the Adelphi a couple of times in the past (both put on by our current Tenfootcity Editor btw!) I asked Shaun if he remembers those times?

“Yeah I remember, they were our very first gigs in Hull in the mid-eighties I think – and probably the first time we’d ever been there. It’s just a terraced house converted into a music venue innit? I remember having two great nights there. Is it still there?” he asked.

Yep, it’s still there, I inform him, not changed much and still getting a great crowd.

I went on to ask Shaun if he’d heard about Bransholme Centre and if he knew what the place was?

“Nope, no, never heard of the place. Haven’t got a clue what it is really,” he laughed. So, after explaining,

TENFOOTCITY I went onto to ask have you ever played such a strange gig before?

Shaun laughed again, “No, no. Never. I can definitely say never to that. Ha ha!”… and I sat smirking, I knew that would be the answer anyway. Who’d have ever thought it. That’s the true beauty of this gig, you’d never imagine it and that’s a bloody genius stroke by whoever came up with the idea as part of our ‘City Of Culture.’

I went to ask about the band, why was it just Shaun and Kermit?

“It’s always been that way really, but we just get session guys in with us as and when we need them” (I’d always assumed that it was a full band.)

I want to let you all know this was all very light-hearted and I and Shaun were bouncing off each other’s reactions. It was lovely having such a casual chat with a genuine pop Icon Who are the other musicians that work with you then?

I asked…

“Mike, the bass player, and Dan our keyboard guy both payed with the Monday’s.”

This makes perfect sense actually, keeping it all ‘in house’ because I got the same response when I asked about all of the famous artwork that their covers were always renowned for…

“That stuff was all done by my cousin actually.” He informs me. Those sleeves went onto have Cult-Status.

If you loved the Monday’s you wouldn’t even need to see the name of the band on a sleeve, you’d just know what it was, where it came from and it would take you back to where you first heard it. All over the world they are iconic images of our times and places with a nostalgic tone of being high, dancing, summer sun and chilling out. The represent the total joy of hedonism with days of freedom, drugs and raves.

Shaun Ryder Interview “No some of the Black Grape fans hate the Monday’s music. They really don’t like it!”

I was shocked in all honesty, because Shaun would be my reason for attending anything he does, I found it confusing that fans wouldn’t want both. Maybe I wanted to have my cake and eat it?

I’d like to know about Shaun, the ‘music artist’ and what his current influences were?

“Well my two girls are eight and nine, so right now I don’t listen to much, apart from Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift!” he laughed, “I mean they are really good at what they do though. Whereas my lad went off to Uni loving Hip-Hop, but came back well into rave! I hear it all really and nothing has changed in all those years.”

I agree with that sentiment and hip-hop always derives back to the old school anyway. There’s nothing better than a good hip-hop tune and not the ‘bangers’ (for the love of god that term is pathetic!) that all the kids play now!

Black grape graced our city on the 3rd of November 2017 at North Point Shopping Centre on Bransholme as part of the ‘Back to Ours’ events and it was a personal pleasure for me to have a chat with Shaun beforehand.

It leads me to ask why the title ‘Pop Voodoo?’

Shaun laughed, “One of my mates said ‘the devil brought you into music’ so it was named after that quote really.” My thoughts were… didn’t it all of us?

Grape were meant to play a gig in Queens Gardens that got cancelled at the last minute, it was to raise awareness of racism. “I’ve no no idea why it got pulled. I hope it’ll get put back on, because we make a point of supporting things like that.”

On that subject actually, my son is African, so I couldn’t help but ask what his thoughts on racism were and why he thought the ugliness was creeping back in?

“I can’t understand it really. I don’t know why people have those attitudes. What are people so frightened of? I like a mixture of people and languages.

Personally, I love to hear an accent unlike my own. I find comfort in any people laughing, smiling and being happy enough to feel at ease around me.” Well said Shaun, shouldn’t everyone feel like that!

At a Grape gig I’d expect fans to want to hear some Monday’s music, so I asked if the people at the gigs ask for some of those songs?

Mr. Newsome is the man now responsible for the visual look of Tenfootcity magazine and we’re really pleased to have him on board for his creativity and unbridled enthusiasm, and so, because he’s such a prominent character in Hull these days, we thought it might be a good idea to introduce him to you, our readers…

So, Stevie-Boy, give us a bit of background about yourself.

Who are you exactly and what’s your background?

“Hmmm not sure where to start really… I’m just your average bloke, with a Missus, some kids and a fetish for painting the town red in more than one sense of the word.

I’ve been a professional Dj for the last 30years but as a sideline, a few years back when the ‘Crash’ happened, DJ’s wages and the nightlife were first to take a hit, so I turned back to my older talent, design. I studied graphic design in the 90’s but the love of House Music had lured me away. I lived abroad for a good few years learning the trade alongside some top DJ’s, then my first- born arrived, so I headed home, records in hand. After several swerves around the UK, I woke up in Hull, which was 99% Phil Hailstone & Rhythm Rooms fault I’m sure!”

How come you’ve managed to establish yourself so well in the City and do you feel like a true Hullensian now these days?

“That’s what you get from the last 15 years stood at the front of the crowd jumping up and down like a bellend! People tend to notice you a bit. The word ‘established’ could possibly refer more to my graphic life but that comes down to pure passion and churning out good work. Sticking your fingers in as many Hull Pies as you can (that’s a fiver for the plug HP) usually works though. As for the latter part of the question, YES I totally feel part of Hull. I’ve watched the city rise since I’ve been here. It’s a great city full of great friendly people. Walk down the street and say hiya to someone and I bet they’ll talk back to you.”

As a designer, give us an example of some of the prestigious jobs you’ve managed to secure for yourself over the years (including Tenfootcity of course, Ha, ha!) and where/how do you ply most of your trade these days?

“My graphic life is 100% down to a very good friend Mark, who steered me in the right direction when times were hard and I’ll never forget that. I now cover a lot of Hull’s Dance-Scene. Deja-vu, Rewind, Curiosity, Local, House of Tequila, Illicit, Territory, the list goes on. As well as clubs around the UK and Ibiza but my website takes me all over the world, Paris, London, America, Germany, Australia bla bla bla. Not sure what the most prestigious stuff is, I did a flyer for a gym in Harrods the other day but then my next job was a Facebook banner for a sex shop and dildo.

Speaking of Dildos.. #radders :) “ How would you describe your style and “philosophy of design?”

“My number one rule is keep it clean. Less is definatly more these days. With current trends people are usually seeing your artwork while scrolling so you have to catch their attention fast.

Long gone are the days of filling every inch of white space.

As regards being a DJ, which field is your real love?

“HOUSE. Always has been and always will be. It’s gotta have a vocal for me, even if it’s just a stab.

Don’t get me wrong some of the best tunes ever made had very little vocal, but you can’t beat that feeling when a soulful vocal hits the spot, especially if it’s followed by a belting hands in the air piano. As a DJ I always like to keep people on their toes and often surprise them!”

So, you’re well settled in this City now, so what are your plans for the immediate future?

“In the words of Boris Dlugosch “Keep pushing on...”. Who knows what tomorrow will bring so you just have to make the most of what you have and try to make things better each day. I would like to employ some staff soon cos i’m fucking knackerd!. Chilli Devil’s

a hot new place to check out!

Chilli Devil’s was born out Ian Ibbetson’s experience of serving spicy street-food at Hull Beer Festival, which he did as part of his chilli sauce manufacturing business and now he’s actually got a bar where you can enjoy the gorgeous spicy food along with a range of fine beers.

Simplicity is at the heart of this whole concept, with everything done with the minimum of fuss. They serve food direct from the bar with the idea that it should take no longer to serve up a bowl of chilli than it takes to serve a decent pint of ale!

But don’t go thinking it’s that boring concoction of cheap mince, tinned kidney beans and some chilli powder – no way! They serve proper chopped-chilli dishes here, which change daily and can range from Mexican or Latin American style chilli-con-carne, to Indian, Thai or Chinese dishes.

They also have a few of their own special recipes too.

In fact the dishes could be anything – as long as it’s got Chilli in it!

At least one dish each day is vegetarian (usually vegan – who also get their own dedicated night on Wednesdays btw) and they also offer gourmet banger buns, pies or olives with warm pitta bread for those who haven’t yet discovered the love of chilli. (So you don’t have to feel left out y’know!)

It’s a welcoming place this, with a nice atmosphere. A bowl of chilli is just a fiver, and they’ll even re-fill it for just £4!

In fact they have lots of interesting offers during the week and other discounts, so go and find out for yourselves. They don’t stop at food & drink though, they also put on entertainment, with an acoustic evening each Tuesday and an open-acoustic Blues night on the first Thursday of every month. The last Thursday of every month is their “Feast Night” – which is a ticket-only 3 or 4 course meal, usually structured around an exotic meat such as buffalo, venison, alpaca or mouflon. On those special feast nights they also do table service and often have acoustic entertainment on as well.

Chilli Devil’s is a great, cosy, friendly little bar with a very laid-back attitude, that you really ought to discover as it’s a unique and welcome new addition to Hull. They’ve earned a ton of brilliant reviews since they opened, but one that particularly pleased Ian was this;

“When you pay a visit to Chilli Devil’s ... be sure to take a sense of adventure with you.”

PAVE

THE ORIGINAL VANGUARD OF HULL’S ‘CULTURAL REVOLUTION.’ When it opened well over 15 years ago, Pave was Hull’s original contemporary bar-eatery that brought decent World-Beers alongside good and interesting ‘new’ food to the people of Hull. It created a whole new experience and atmosphere that we had never really encountered in these parts before, dragging Hull into the 21st century.

Pave was actually solely responsible for kick-starting the regeneration of Princes Avenue. It was new, it was vibrant and, thankfully, it still is. Obviously this initial vision of the ‘new style of socialising’ has now permeated its way into the rest of the City on a massive scale, but Pave is the place to thank for first introducing it to us.

Special one-off ticketed events include: ‘Folk the 28 Day Rule’, a benefit gig on November 22nd featuring Joe Solo, described by Radio 2 as the ‘perfect protest singer’, Hull legend Bernie Laverick and Lloyd from The Hillbilly Troupe. The gig is a fundraiser to support Dermot Rathbone, who’s had his sickness benefits stopped following an extended stay in hospital. Despite suffering from several debilitating conditions, Dermot is well-known in Hull for his tireless campaigning for the NHS and for his work with the Samaritans. The gig has been organised by a group of fellow trade unionists and activists to raise money to support Dermot and his family in their time of need.

New Year’s Eve at Pave will be rather special with live music from the masters of mayhem, Bunkerpop.

Formed in 2016, the performances of this Hull ‘super-group’ (ha ha) have become legendary.

The 5-piece produce hypnotic grooves, funky ‘krautish’ rock and afro-tinged electronica that never fail to get the audience moving. Led by Paul Sarel (Heroes of the Mexican Independence Movement/The Rocky Nest/ Fonda 500) the band features Jonathan Schoolgirl (The Schoolgirls), Carlos Macklin (Fire) Mark Blissenden (Baby Mammoth) and Trevor Simpson (Easy Skankin/ Tea With The Reverend). There’ll be Bingo and high jinks plus Bunkerpop’s owns DJs Bliss, Sarel and The Reverend until 2am.

So, it’s obvious to detect that the initial ‘new vibe’ that Pave first brought to the city all of those years ago is still there and is as cutting-edge as ever.

Hull’s secret Vegetarian enclave.

I’d like to introduce to you a little hidden gem of a getaway, on Newland Avenue, my local high street. Zoo Vegetarian Café recently had a total revamp. It’s not just a basic one though, this place is actually very chic and stylish, as well comfortable and welcoming.

I know what some people think… “what no meat, no thanks” well I think you’d find this place a surprising reflection of how it’s done right. My personal favourite, the mushrooms on toast with creme fraiche, is actually sublime.

Held over two floors, there is a seamless divide from the external to the internal with beautifully restored doors bringing the outside in and the inside out, with a quaint, bunting-lined courtyard area. The inside has what I adore, a huge sharing table. The concept of sitting with people you don’t know to share food is something of a novelty to some, but other countries embrace this, as I love to do myself.

The Coffee (which I luckily sampled before they first launched) is brought to you via River City Coffee, and is second to none in Hull’s Artisan Coffee-Roasting scene and there is also a wide range of great teas served in some rather admirable teapots, that are very swish to say the least.

Big chunky wooden tables, flowers and the lovely sounds of people enjoying food, friends dropping by to see the new and loved Zoo, as well as the clanging of pots and pans. It makes for a great little peaceful enclave away from the bustle of shopping and busy traffic.

Upstairs is a little mecca, like a tropical oasis of fabrics, plants and the most divine wallpaper. Admittedly being a woman I am drawn to something delectable, stylish and new, not unlike a magpie trying to find something shiny and interesting!

You’ll find Zoo nestled away down a little alley, off Newland Avenue, by the side of the Heron shop. Its location is a little deceptive at first, so go with it, because it’s well worth discovering. There are many people who’ve still not heard of it, or found it. Once you do find it, you’ll be doing what I am doing now and trying to describe the location to others to experience the joy of what many people in this area have been enjoying secretly for years!

The upstairs is a great breathing space, it’s open-plan with a little Juliet balcony and, though the doors are often open, you’d not know that Newland Avenue was just a few steps away, because it’s so peaceful in here. If you’re in the industry you’ll know that some space, peace, and quiet is an absolute joy!

OLD TOWN AND THE IMPRESSIVE

SILVERS BAR There are a group of venues under one umbrella, in the Old Town that are operated by one main team. They run Silvers Bar (Land of Green Ginger) Garbo’s (Lowgate) Riddlers and Lizard Lounge (both situated on the main Old Town Plaza, which is Trinity Square.) Added to this, they’re also operating The Hull Cheese in the city centre. But, even though they have their own venues to concentrate on, and promote, they actually champion the Old Town scene in general, which helps to benefit all of the other venues, shops, bars and restaurants that are clustered, in close proximity, in this very vibrant and attractive area known as “The Old Town Quarter.”

They’re actually quite passionate about helping to promote the whole area as Karl explained, “The Old Town Quarter is becoming very successful and the popularity of it is growing all of the time. Of course, the visitor numbers have risen during the Year of Culture, because this is obviously a go-to destination area of the city, not just for locals, but all of the visitors to the city who want to come and discover this special area of Hull. The range of people ambling around the area has certainly noticeably changed, at various different times of the day, with a much broader range of ages and interests. The mixture of people is a lot more cosmopolitan which is a great thing for the city and also for all of us who operate around here.”

He’s certainly right of course, because this area of our city is rich in history, beautiful architecture, atmospheric cobbled streets, excellent museums, specialist shops, bars and restaurants and, of course, the famous Real ale Trail.

Talking of beautiful architecture, we’re actually sitting, chatting in one of the most spectacular buildings in the old town. This is one of his flagship venues, Silvers, which is on the corner of Hull’s famous “Land Of Green Ginger.” It’s probably the most iconic address that you could have in Hull and the street sign is actually on the side of their building!

And what a building it is. Karl is obviously eager to sing its praises…

“It’s a unique concept venue actually and it’s housed in one of Hull’s most elegant buildings with superb architecture.

We’ve tried to complement that with the impressive interior design which I hope people recognise. It’s well worth a visit to just to have a look around actually (as well as eat and drink of course, ha ha –Ed) because we’ll give people a guided tour of the building, including all of our special themed private dining and party rooms. It’s a great place for pictures actually, especially the brilliant wall murals created by a prominent local artist, featuring a series of famous characters depicted as animals! It’s quite interesting trying to identify them all. Plus we have a few interesting developments, which we’ll be announcing in the New Year.”

So, you all know what to do now. If you’re a regular you’ll be familiar with it, but if you’ve yet to discover it, you really ought to.

Leonard Silvers is a famous Hull menswear shop, renowned for high quality suits, clothing and bespoke tailoring… but now it’s been given a whole new lease of life after having been taken over by Chris Sykes. Chris is not new to the fashion industry, he’s been involved in it himself for over 20 years, having first launched his own Hull Men’s Fashion Shop, Space, which became a bit of an institution in itself. He then worked as a fashion-retail commercial-agent, based in Manchester, supplying up to 200 Fashion shops around the U.K., so this guy obviously knows the fashion industry, as he explained…

I am now committed to growing our online offering and injecting a younger, more vibrant flavour into the business. It was only when talking with Eric Silver in town one day, I realised I could combine John Victor and Leonard Silver under one roof and have a base for the brand. We did the deal and Eric has now retired. I wish him all the best for the future and thank him for the work he’s done over many years with Leonard Silver. He has helped me massively in setting up this business and I will be maintaining the reputation of quality that it has always had in this City. When looking into the potential of Leonard Silver as a business I realised I had two huge assets in-house, and that was Peter Fletcher and Toni Boorman. They have both worked for the business for over 10 years and Peter has actually been with the business for over 30 years as an expert tailor. It was obvious to me, the fact we have an ‘in house tailor’ with years of experience, was a unique selling point and so Peter agreed to be a partner. SLUTS DILEMMA? …..

City are just consistently inconsistent.

We’d just sang our third rendition of ‘We can see you sneaking out...’ and as the Norwich fans shuffled towards the exits, a couple looked back our way and shrugged their shoulders, they looked beaten and we were winning and bouncing but biting our nails, the clock ticked past 5.00pm and we were still playing, Norwich still attacking the ten men of City, and we knew, yes we knew, they would score, and of course they did.

A draw conceded from the jaws of victory. A day which pretty much sums up City’s season so far. But we’re not all crestfallen. Because we know we are capable of more, because we are still in third gear when we should be in cruise control and because there is nothing to fear in the Championship this year, only ourselves.

No-one could accuse Hull City of being a lucky club, and this season has certainly confirmed that belief. To loose Abel Hernandez when he was on fire caused us more damage and grief then the fire sale of all of last season’s relegation squad put together. And to get nigh on £45m for them was colossal business. It would have been better business if a bit more of that £45m had been spent replacing Hernandez but, just put ‘unlucky’ and unfashionable’ in the same sentence and that is part of the problem in attracting players to Hull and the timing of Abel’s injury couldn’t have been any worse.

our recruitment was pretty shrewd because this squad certainly contains a lot of talent. The problem lies in playing them all in their best positions at the right time, enter Leonid Slutsky. Is he the special one ? After the 2-1 home defeat to PNE I would have argued that we have another Mike Phelan on our hands, Sluts looked totally lost and friendless on the touchline as the game went on around him with him seemingly having no influence on it at all. Then we battered Birmingham 6-1 and suddenly we have the right players playing in the right formation, and we looked a very good potent team going forward.

The talent is certainly in the squad to mount a promotion challenge and I think we will. A bit of a slow-burner perhaps, but I think we will get there. I forecast an end to our unlucky season once we overcome our predilection for inconsistency. Unfortunately after the great away win at Barnsley, we followed it up with disappointing displays against Forest, Boro and more recently The Blades, where we just capitulated. We are Hull City though and our season doesn’t usually start while November but I’ve also been there when our season has finished in November! Be patient and keep the faith. Just as this magazine is about to go to print we have a string of winnable games coming up; Ipswich and Bristol City at home and Millwall away. Get a good return from those three and we’ll be back on track. Position ourselves just outside the Play-Off places for Christmas, spend a few bob in the January window and the KCOM stadium will soon be rocking again. (He hopes! – Ed.) And remember a successful club is a sellable club.

NOT ON OUR WATCH! The third We Shall Overcome weekend took place recently, taking in venues up and down the UK and beyond, as once again musicians, poets, writers and activists pulled together to demonstrate that community spirit is alive and well in “Food Bank Britain.”

For the uninitiated, we started WSO in 2015 in a bid to combat the crushing impact of Tory cuts on the poorest and most vulnerable. We have since organised almost 700 events in 141 towns and cities across nine countries on three continents, and in the process we estimate our organisers have raised close to £350,000 worth of food, cash, clothing, bedding, furniture and electrical goods.

All of which stayed in the town that it was raised, going straight to the front line of need.

We Shall Overcome could not be more simple. It’s a banner to march under. We use it to stamp a ragged and diverse collection of gigs with a single badge. Put simply, we unify the thousands of individual gigs all raising funds to help local causes into a single movement, so the more of us join in, the more powerful the anti-austerity message becomes. If we work together with a collective raised voice, we are fargreater than the sum of our parts. It is a musical demonstration of the basic truth that;

WE ARE NOT A POOR NATION.

“In Unity lies strength.”

Our causes are multiple. From independent food banks to soup kitchens; youth clubs to homeless shelters; crisis centres to community outreach. Where the help goes, is decided locally according to where need is greatest. We leave that to our organisers as they know their towns better than we do.

We sell t-shirts through Philosophy Football with all profits going to longer term causes; and we sell wristbands, stickers and badges at gigs, with all money raised being thrown in the bucket at the end of the night; we run raffles and sell home-made cakes; local artists auction their paintings; basically we bring whatever skills we have to the table and do our best to make them pay.

We are thousands of people who just aren’t prepared to sit back and see someone go hungry in a country that often looks to have a poverty of compassion. We are protesting against austerity whilst trying to do something to ease its burden. We are a raised fist and a helping hand.

And next year we will be needed more than ever. If it can’t be stopped, Universal Credit will be rolled out nationally, and with it a crisis in homelessness like nothing we have ever witnessed. We aim to be there to help pick

Austerity is a blatant attempt to use the perception of national poverty to force through the endgame of privatisation, to sell off all remaining public assets, and finally to destroy the NHS.

We are the sixth wealthiest on the planet!

Our problem is the scale of the inequality which has seen Britain’s 100 richest families INCREASE their personal wealth by £57 billion since 2010, …. a seven year period in which food bank use has rocketed and hundreds of thousands of children now rely on them for their meals.

Globally the world’s wealthiest 62 people have a greater combined wealth than half of the population of this planet. That is beyond immoral, that is just sick.

We Shall Overcome is not the solution to this. We know that; but what we are is a lifeline to thousands of people in our communities who are being exploited by this government just to pay off a “debt” - and we will stand here and fight until we are no longer needed, because if the State has absolved itself of any responsibility then two things are certain; Firstly that the State is no longer fit for purpose; and secondly, someone has to help - or people will die. We won’t allow it. …Not on our watch!

Greg Davies returns with his biggest tour yet, and his first live show in four years, You Magnificent Beast follows a succession of TV work, Cuckoo, Man Down, and Taskmaster. His new show encompasses all sorts – though mainly is regarded as not for the faint-hearted as he covers every topic there is, without blushing.

As ever, Davies’ enigmatic stage presence holds the show which, like most of his other shows, uses small morsels and oddities from the closest to us, creating comedy which has soul and family, endearing whilst at the same time disgusting, perfectly balancing between the two.

Kardomah94 – Folk In Hull: Beggar’s Bridge + Hillbilly Troupe When it comes to folk music in Hull, it’s pretty much impossible to talk about it without mentioning Beggar’s Bridge or Hillybilly Troupe, and this December they bring to you an incredible double header of an evening including both bands in such an intimate venue as Kardomah. Beggar’s Bridge constantly engaging story-telling songs, using time tested traditional composition to create mythologies and tales about the area, both captivating and contemporary, whilst Hillbilly Troupe blend three generations of musicians to create a mesmeric blend of traditional folk alongside a little bit of punk and ska influence. A great night.

The Cribs have long been one of the staples of the UK’s alternative indie rock scene, and they return this year with their latest album ’24-7 Rock Star Shit’, marking the first album since their 2015 release ’For All My Sisters’, after signing for Sony in 2014. 2017 also marks the tenth anniversary of their near-legendary album, ‘Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever’, and a small run of shows to accompany that, so 2017 marks a big year for The Cribs and somewhat of a comeback, so expect only more from them in the coming year.

SUNDAY 28TH Adelphi – Autobahn Following on from a fairly extensive UK tour in November for their new EP ‘The Moral Crossing’, Autobahn return bringing with them their heavy, constantly driving post punk, though slightly gothic sound. This sound has always lead them to be forever just slightly under the radar, the heavy intensity can create something that goes a long way towards being slightly overwhelming, though through synth and a delicate ability to use the sound well, they still create something more than accessible, which is well balanced between being an onslaught and something mesmerising within the soundscapes that are created.
