We have existed in Hull for 13 years now and this is issue 51. (Consistent eh?) Usual issues are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Christmas/New Year.

This magazine exists because “WEAREHULL.”A unique, inspiring, challenging City that stands alone, like a light at the end of a tunnel on the edge of the U.K. It’s at the terminus of a long dark corridor that leads you away from the rest of that strange and disturbing world out there, into our enclave of true reality called HULL! place that harbours our special lifestyle, distinctive accent and our unique ‘on the edge’ sense of humour. The aim of this magazine is to reflect all of the above and to highlight and encourage all of the vibrancy and creativity that exists herein. In other words… you read Tenfootcity and you’re in tune with our magical part of the world. Our Editorial policy is one of total Social-Inclusion, non-discrimination, bloody (but peaceful) revolution and Freedom of Speech – but most of all, having a laugh! Love us.

It’s Spring ….SO BRING ME SUNSHINE & LAUGHTER! Now then! It’s been a while since our Winter/Christmas issue hasn’t it? Sorry about that, but January and February are always difficult months for us to run this magazine, but as you all MUST surely know by now, we always reappear and so it shouldn’t ever surprise you. We’ll never disappear. Well not until I’m dead anyway – and even then, I hope we’ll have the right person in place to keep it going. Get in touch if you think YOU could be that person. Basic requirements are that you must be from Hull, LOVE Hull and its people, have a good sense of humour, have a good awareness of society and believe in Equality on all levels. (ie: You need to be a Socialist who cares about people.) Oh, sorry, I nearly forgot, you also need to be a bit of a cheeky cunt like me.

Anyway, we’re still here and amazingly Hull is still here, but the World is going MAD as we all know. You don’t even really want us to mention the ‘B’ word because, I know, we’re all absolutely sick of it … as this great piece of stencilled graffiti-type Art illustrates. Even though most of us at Tenfootcity probably voted to “remain” originally, we RESPECT our fellow working-class people (70% in Hull btw!)… and we believe that decision MUST be honoured. The whole things has become a totally confusing (and embarrassing) mess for everyone concerned and we hope our Cover illustrates that in some way. (It’s well thought-out as usual – our covers have always been important to us y’know!) The position of Tenfootcity is simple. Get out of the Right-Wing Oligarchical EU, get rid of the disgusting Tories and then start building International Socialism starting from here. Get John and Jezzer through the doors of Downing Street, … cos that REALLY WILL scare the living shit out of the establishment. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

Anyway, life goes on. We all have normal life to be getting on with and fuckin’ Capitalism to cope with by working our arses off and struggling to pay all of our bills. But, if you ARE lucky enough to find a little spare to enjoy yourself with occasionally, then, as usual, Tenfootcity reflects the vibrancy of our special City and highlights some of the great places and events that you may want to experience.

Always try to enjoy yourselves if possible, because, as The Specials once said…

“It’s Later than you think.” Have a nice Springtime, Smile, (Love, Live, laugh and be happy?)… and just look forward to the coming Sunshine – which Eric and Ernie always asked to be delivered.

THE STORY OF DOTTY THE HOLLYWOOD HOTTY FROM HULL… She was born on Chanterlands Avenue. They’re a theatre company based in Hull.

She was a superstar of silent films. They’re anything but silent. Now the story of Hull’s own forgotten Hollywood heroine can be told by emotive local theatre company Smashing Mirrors.

‘The Remarkable Tale of Dorothy Mackaill’ is a poignant story that takes us from Hull to Hollywood and finally Honolulu. It is the tale of a Thoresby Street Schoolgirl who ran away from her single parent father to become a stage actress in London. Her career takes her to Paris and subsequently Broadway before becoming a star of the silver screen.

Mackaill starred in over 60 silent and talkie films the majority of which featured her as the leading lady and poster girl. She retired in 1937 to care for her elderly mother and subsequently moved to Hawaii. There were, however, still occasional TV appearance most notably in a couple of late 70s ‘Hawaii 5-0’ episodes.

This extraordinary tale of runaways, glitz, glamour, and the golden age of movies is written and directed by Elizabeth Godber and takes place in New Theatre’s Lounge Bar 3rd – 5th June at 7.30pm

Move it! Shake it! Bump It! Rock It! Roll it! Stroll it! Strut it! The Soul Train (Hull City Hall – 8th May) is due to arrive with the biggest and best of the world celebrated David Gest R&B shows yet. Get up offa that thang! Perhaps you only know Gest as a tabloid star and the column inches dedicated to his friendship with Michael Jackson, his marriage to Lizi Minelli, his gambling debts and his appearances on ‘Big Brother’ and ‘I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here.’ Yet, for years he was moving and grooving music lovers with slick, funky but chic, Soul Productions that featured such legends as Deniece Williams, Peabo Bryson, Billy Paul, Ce Ce Penniston, and Shelia Fergusson all performing the songs that made them famous.

Soul Train shows are the most exciting, revelatory, and varied dance nights you are likely to see. They represent the gospels according to Gest and provide Soul history, funky-folklore and a journey through decades of dance delirium. Despite his sudden death in 2016 the shows he pioneered continue in support of the David Gest Foundation and this latest Soul Train has gathered together the amazing vocal talent of Dina Carrol (performing ‘Ain’t No Man’ and ‘Perfect Year’); the mesmerising stage presence of Mari Wilson (‘Just what I always wanted’); the legendary Freda Payne (‘Band of Gold’); GC Cameron of The Spinners (‘Could it Be I’m Falling in Love’, ‘Working My Way Back to You’); the ever-popular Junior (‘Mama Used to Say’): The Flirtations with their Northern Soul classic ‘Nothing But A Heartache’; Eban Brown former lead singer of The Stylistics (‘I’m Stone in Love with You’ and ‘You Make Me Feel Brand New’) Jump on board, hit the floor, and work that body. The Soul Train is the non-stop party night for party people.

HULL PRIDE FESTIVAL 2019

Tenfootcity is Proud to be part of a diverse and inclusive Hull…..

“This year marks a major landmark in LGBT history - the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

If you’ve not heard of Stonewall before, beyond the UK charity or rubbish film, here’s a quick recap. In the 60s, the LGBT-welcoming bars of New York were regularly raided and shut down by the police who arrested patrons for ridiculous things like ‘wearing less than three gender-appropriate articles of clothing.’

On June 28 1969, the crowd at the Stonewall Inn had had enough and fought back. Legend has it that drag queen Marsha P. Johnson hefted one of the first bricks thrown (look her up - an incredible, heartbreaking life). A week of violent clashes against the NYPD galvanised the community and the uprising changed the police’s approach to LGBT people forever. The night of June 28 and its aftermath turbocharged the LGBT rights movement and changes were felt across the globe.

One year later, the anniversary of the riot was marked with America’s first ever Pride parades and 50 years on, June is now ‘Pride month’ in the States.

In the UK, the first Pride event took place three years after Stonewall and only five years after homosexuality was decriminalised.

Fifty years on from the Stonewall riots, LGBT rights have moved forward so much that at Pride in Hull, we’re asked whether there’s even a need for Pride events in 2019. Spoiler: YES! - In February a same-sex family in Hull were sent a letter telling them to move

from their home, calling their relationship - and their decision to raise a child - immoral. Because of crap like this, a third of LGBT+ people aren’t open about their sexuality at work.

So we obviously still have a lot of work to do. Some information to share, some love to spread and some fun to be had. Over 150 Prides are happening in the UK this year - from burgeoning newcomers to behemoth events. They’re all important. But what does a Pride even look like in 2019?

Is it a festival? Manchester Pride are charging £70 to see Ariana Grande and Brighton have ACTUAL Kylie performing. Is it a parade? Pride in London is one of the biggest spectacles the city has to offer. Global brands march next to members of the community on a parade route lined by over 30,000 people. Or is it, like Stonewall, … still a protest? The Brexit vote saw a huge spike in hate crime. Same-sex marriage still isn’t possible in Northern Ireland. Pick up any newspaper and look at how they’re still treating trans-people as a dangerous curiosity. God knows what’ll be happening in America by the time you read this.

So what about you? We’re putting this question at the centre of Pride in Hull. In 2019, is your Pride a Party, a Parade, a Protest? Or is it something else?

PARAGON DREAMS.

HESTOR ULLYART IS BACK AT HULL TRUCK WITH ANOTHER SUPERB SOLO SHOW With the possible exception of “Can you put those legs away?” …the question I was most frequently asked during last summer was “Did you see The Ballad of Paragon Station at Hull Truck?” Those who saw Hester Ullyart in her One-Woman drama were eager to share their experience with me, whereas those who missed the shows last July, but had subsequently heard from others, or read reviews about it, wanted to know if it was really as good as they’d heard it was. It was.

Hester Ullyart is a Hull girl. She knows her City and its characters and after studying at RDA and appearing in Theatre, Television and film, is back to tell some home town tales.

Her performances appear so effortless that despite playing all 4 protagonists in ‘The Ballad…’ the character transitions she makes seemed seamless, as her presence, portrayals and the writing immersed us completely in the slightly seedy world that the story inhabited.

Following on from the earlier production, ‘Paragon Dreams’ is another solo work that looks to be an equally captivating show. This time we are taken out onto the streets of big dreams but small time dreamers and the reality of falling down a rabbit hole where nothing is quite as you had originally imagined or planned.

If you saw ‘The Ballad of Paragon Station’ you’ll definitely want to be at Hull Truck from April 23rd to 4th May for ‘Paragon Dreams’ If you didn’t then you should know not to miss out twice.

Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake Hull New Theatre : Tuesday 23 - Saturday 27 April It is, arguably, the most popular ballet of all time. It’s the one that even if you don’t really know anything about ballet that you’ll still really want to see. It’s on bucket-lists the world over because of its reputation as a brilliant spectacle, fantastic entertainment, and the world’s greatest ballet. The Swan Lake story is thrilling, audacious, witty, and emotive, and it now has a fresh, modern, somewhat disturbing, new look thanks to award-winning choreographer Matthew Borne. So, think, ‘Brothers Grimm, meets La La Land in a Hammer-Horror story, made for game of thrones fans.’ There’s lashings of sex and sorcery, love, lust and loss, plus evil aplenty, and even big, bad, soap-opera style, betrayal that occurs at a posh birthday party… oh and some swans get drowned just before the end but everything turns out okay.

All this while everyone is having a right good old dance to some glorious and rousing Tchaikovsky.

The carnal, and evocative, magic realism of Ballet at its gloriously, interpretive, best.

I GET MY KICKS… OUT ON THE FLOOR! (MOTOWN CELEBRATES ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY AT HULL NEW THEATRE)

Berry Gordy was a business man really. He mainly left the music to his musicians, singers, song writers, and producers. They were all amongst the best at what they did. They had to be, because Berry left them to produce new, innovative, soul music that anyone could enjoy. A tall and constantly demanding order but it worked and brought people of all shades together.

Tamla Motown Launched on the 12th January 1959. From the very start it was the body-shaking, hip-swaying, grooviest, and funkiest music around. Berry, his label, and his team, changed, and continued to change, popular music for ever.

The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gate, Stevie Wonder, The Four-Tops and Smokey Robinson, are just some of the many, (MANY!) names that Motown discovered, recorded, and made into superstars.

Raw talent cooked up to tasty perfection was how Gordy built his ‘Hitsville USA’ empire.

To celebrate this landmark birthday ‘Motown The Musical’ comes to Hull New Theatre.

Structured around Berry Gordy’s autobiography and featuring 50 of the tunes that Motown made famous including ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,’ ‘Dancing In The Street’, and ‘Stop! In The Name Of Love’ this is a success story to match any in the history of popular music and is guaranteed to get you dancing and romancing, stomping, and singing. This is really going to be the feel-good night to start your summer with a glorious soulful swing. Don’t miss it.

ABSOLUTELY MORE TO COME! For Absolutely Cultured, 2018 was a year of transition as it evolved into a permanent Arts organisation in this city. Finishing the year with Urban Legends: Northern Lights, which saw audiences of 60,000 in the city centre, it was clear the appetite for more arts and culture is most certainly still alive in Hull.

Katy Fuller, CEO and Creative Director of Absolutely Cultured said; “It was great to see so many people continuing to embrace the arts and culture on offer. Tens of thousands of people turned out to our own events and exhibitions last year and many more supported Hull’s broader cultural offer which continues to grow.” The team at Absolutely Cultured are delivering some bold partnership projects this year. The Liverpool Biennial touring programme with Place to Place at Humber Street Gallery, the IETM Plenary saw hundreds of international theatre-makers experience what our city has to offer. The Witching Hour, a brandnew touring spectacle produced in partnership with Wirral, Liverpool City Region’s 2019 Borough of Culture, took place in East Park in May and PRSF New Music Biennial is coming back to Hull this summer bringing some ground-breaking new music. Katy Fuller continued, “We are working with artists and cultural organisations, with businesses and service providers, schools and communities, to build further opportunities for arts and culture to develop in Hull. Our Hull Independent Producer Initiative (HIPI), that supports emerging Theatre companies and individual artists, living and working in Hull, supported 15 companies in 2018 and will be at Edinburgh Fringe again this year with the Hull Takeover showcasing some of the incredible work coming out of Hull.”

URBAN TRENDZ NEW ON-LINE SHOP… Dave O’Kwesia (DJ Redlocz/Full Flava Record Label & Promotions) is a well-known local Hull Lad and, having always been involved in the ‘Street Culture ‘ of Hull, including his Hip-Hop Music label, Break-Dancing, Graffiti events, Rapping-Workshops, Community Engagement and the Beats-Bus project (and even the Graffiti Wall in the Tenfoot next to his shop) … it seemed only natural that he ought to open his own place in Hull that reflects all of this, so this is why Urban Trendz, the shop on Spring Bank West was created. Amazingly he bravely opened it in the height of the recession in 2009, yet he’s still here now due to his own dedication and some vital support he received at the beginning; “I’m grateful to the people who helped and supported me with this idea at the time, like ‘Skills For the Community’ and other Black organisations, but also to my late Brother (God Rest his Soul) who alI helped me. I wanted to reflect the Urban ‘Street Culture’ of Hull, and I was influenced by the styles of the shops around little Camden in London and I realised we now needed that style in Hull. The City of Hull has become gradually more cosmopolitan with a broad multi-ethnicity, and that’s a great thing of course.

St. Mary’s College Tenfootcity Media Project.

THE CREATIVITY OF HULL’S All the kids at St Mary’s totally ROCK at this stuff.

Only problem is, they might put us both out of work soon ED!

A great Tenfootcity project conducted by St. Mary’s College 6th Form Media Dept….

Over the past year myself and Steve, our designer, have been lucky enough to have been involved with a Design & Journalism project instigated by the Media tutors of SMC who saw the educational potential of the students understanding how independent media is produced. We were quite honoured that they chose Tenfootcity Magazine for this model (obviously they’re teachers with great taste and vision!)

We’ve since been in a few times to talk to the students, explain how we operate and have helped to inspire them in the production of their work. They were tasked with providing cover designs, a double-page article spread and a single page “opinion” piece. We finally met each of them individually to hear their explanations for their choices of work for inclusion in a magazine like ours – and we were then supposed to “judge” them all! Unfortunately we couldn’t do that, because, in our view, it wouldn’t have been fair to “pick a winner” and also because we were absolutely blown-away by the standard & creativity of ALL of the work produced, based on the concept of our very own magazine and directed by some absolutely brilliant teaching staff. All of the work was excellent, (and we could have filled a full magazine with it btw!) so I just asked Steve to try to illustrate their work with this random spread of examples, to show you, our readers, how good it all was.

The really good news for us though, is that we obviously don’t need to worry about the fact that we’re all getting gradually older, because this enthusiasm and energy, that we’ve experienced here, illustrates that there’s lots of new young creative talent coming through in Hull, who could all definitely be part of our magazine in the future, as their first step on the big media ladder. Great stuff, we really enjoyed being involved with this project, and we’d like to say thank you to all of the Students and Staff of St. Mary’s 6th Form College Media Dept.

Now here is a place I wouldn’t mind being haunted in… a pub. Ye Olde White Harte is famous for having its very own ghost!

To be honest if I was a ghost the first place I would go would be a pub just so I could freak out drunk people. Basically, what happened was someone took a photo cause that’s all people do now apparently on a clairvoyant night at the pub on of course… Hallo-fucking-ween how convenient huh? activities are really fucking hard to find without being copyrighted and I do not have the money to handle a lawsuit for that okay? So, mine are an absolute pisstake so excuse the crappy Photoshop. Barring this I have been on an investigation to find Hulls best ghosts to see if my home city can convince me that there is something beyond our shitty ass world that we are condemned to live in until we are buried 6 feet under and everyone forgets we exist. Let’s get this over with then.

At number 1 we have the ghostly rope burn. Basically, what happened was a woman walked into that Bob Carvers factory off Hedon Road and left with a rope burn. During her paranormal investigation of the former ropery she sensed with her totally real sixth sense an ‘angry entity’. This supposed pissed off spirit attacked her, pulling, pushing and grabbing her as soon as she walked through those doors. Honestly this all sounds like bullshit to me and this was just an attention seeking woman in desperate need of some cash or media coverage. Even the photos are so shit I don’t have enough ‘angry entity’ within me to show you them, even my shit stuff looks more believable than this. Either this woman had some kinky sex the night before and she decided to make use of it so she couldn’t get caught out at work or she’s a fucking psycho who asked someone to strangle her and if I say so myself I’m not sure which is worse.

5. The final spooky event includes my favourite place

ducing the scariest, most deadly ghost in all of Hull, the horrific… Beryl… they named a ghost Beryl, they are definitely having me on now. My aunts called Beryl and she sends me a hand-made card every year for my birthday hardly the dictator of the undead uprising.

However, I will give it to blood-curdling Beryl over here she decided to haunt a pub, the Manchester Arms to be exact. Supposedly this formidable woman flickers lights (totally not faulty electrics), turns machines off (what else would it be?), plays with hair (yep not drunk idiot with a fetish for hair), causes floods (in the really old building probably with really old plumbing systems, it’s the ghosts fault). I mean even “paranormal experts” say that there is no evidence of haunting, enough said.

The next sighting was at the stroke of midnight because what spooky event isn’t at fucking midnight? Like go to sleep ghosts you weirdos. It gets even better, it was on Halloween cause why wouldn’t you go to graveyards on Halloween? Totally not like there are killer clowns around nowadays. Well, when on a ghost tour Mr Penn took photos in St Marys Church, Lowgate and to his surprise he sees… a man in a top hat? Seriously? When the undead arrive the one thing they remember are their accessories?! An accessory that is out of date?! Keep up with the times ghost for fuck sake! Get a clown mask! They’re freaky as shit.

It gets worse you can’t even see anything except for the tomb! Are people seriously falling for this shit. Even my attempt is better and I am horrible at Photoshop! These fakes should really up their game.

Our city spent more than 1000 hours under alert during the raids form 19 June 1940 to 1945, and overall there has been around 1200 people in the city killed as a result of the bombing, 152000 were made homeless and 3000 other people were bad injured. In that time, more than half of the city was destroyed which was catastrophically.

But let’s take it in chronology order as the first attack happened in 1940 when the first warning came in place at 02:45 on Monday 4 September 1939, the first attack happened during a beautiful night of 20 June 1940, with small damage to Chamberlain Street, and that was only the beginning of something worse, as at the end of the year there has been aroun 20 raids that had taken place. The situation increased the following year, in early of 1941, February more than 20 people were killed. In March, most of the attacks were targeting the River Hull corridor, the second on St. Andrew’s Dock, a public shelter in Bean Street, and many other places causing multiple deaths, this sadly, resulted in over 100 deaths.

It was a cruel situation for the families from Hull that were affected by the attacks, many of them had to run out of the city for their life, many of them moved away from Hull, but because it was warzone, there was no place safe in that time.

The Nazi Germany had a plan in conquering the whole world and destroying everything that was going to be in their way.

It didn’t stop here. In April, there has been another major attack taking place on the 16th focused on Alexandra Dock where around 10 other people have died. It kept going like this, the city continuing to fall and the people continuing dying There have been minor attacks happening in 1942 as the people were a little bit more relaxed, until 1 August when 500KG bombs were used to kill 25 people and destroy many other buildings and until the end of the year other 30 people died. 1944 was a blessed year, as many survivors are saying because in that time, no attack has been taken place, and the city was slowly recovering.

Hull Gay Pride brought in huge crowds to our beloved city of Hull.

In the annual parade that works its way through the city, there were over 2,500 people involved which helped kick off the event by featuring 50 gays for 50 years (such as Sir Ian McKellen and Dusty Springfield).

Andy has been involved with Hull Pride since the

year 2003 when the event was a protest against the state and he has seen it evolve into a celebration of the LGBT+ community and to see a change like that must be truly overwhelming as he has been able to see the city change in the most positive way possible.

Thieving Harry’s is always good! I had the smoked salmon with avocado and scrambled eggs on sourdough toast - delicious as always and generous with the portion sizes. My Dad had the full English, it looked great and he really enjoyed it. We both had a flat white, the coffee is excellent here, very smooth - could do with being a tad hotter, but still lovely. The staff are very welcoming and friendly. Great place. They used to do a breakfast burger which was amazing.

Conveniently located within St Stephens shopping centre in the heart of Hull and only moments from the bus and rail station. Prezzo Hull with its soft lighting and relaxed feel is the ideal place to wind down and enjoy excellent Italian food. The cosy booths are ideal for intimate dinners and there is additional outdoor seating for al fresco dining. Prezzo Hull is the perfect place to escape the bustle of shoppers.

The decor isn’t to my taste whatsoever and I found the seating largely uncomfortable but the menu is decent with a great range of foods on offer. I opted for the Harry’s breakfast. At £8.50, it’s not cheap, so I was expecting something pretty special, I wasn’t disapointed.

Great choice of food including a grazing menu that’s perfect for sharing, I recommend the Saturday lunch offer, pizza and a drink for just £10 and the pizzas are amazing!! A good choice of home made desserts to choose from, love the half baked cookie dough. Staff are very friendly.

Trinity Market is the best! My bf and I come here all the time for snacks, sandwiches or last minute items. They're also open pretty late so they are perfect when you need some late munchies but don't want to hike very far.

We started with a variety of options off of the grazing menu and the largest platter of cheese and meats all of which were delicious and we shared amongst ourselves.

I have visited Nando’s many many times with my family and never been disappointed the only issue is the service is slow but understandable it busy place and always has a full house for Saturday lunch.

I always thought Pizza Express was a fastfood chain but this is a really nice restaurant in Hull offering superb food and drink at really good prices. There is plenty of choice on the menu loved the mini dessert with coffee just enough.

The staff are very friendly and accomodating.

Have a great experience in the newly opened Osteria restaurant, Italian dining in the refurbished Cornmill Hotel. Good food and house wine quality and prompt service, it’s a happy place to enjoy, I was impressed by the food and atmosphere.

I would add that you don’t have to be vegetarian to eat here, the food is that good, it could turn even the most hard-core carnivores veggie, it’s so delicious!

who wrote for a magazine, the Soul Bible; the Blues and Soul magazine- fantastic magazine, I mean people pay big money for a collection of it. And he went to Twisted Wheel and I used to read up about these imported records as at this time there were very very little imported records, as they were all brought out in this country. And it’s still one of my favourite things going down to Manchester, obviously as a Man Utd. fan, but I went down when I was younger and saw Edwin Starr, I was into the music and knew all the records- I was in awe of it and thought “God”, I was only a young lad and at the time I was a milkman getting paid £3 a week and I spent all my money on records, which was 3 records to a £1- and from this djing was like shelling peas as the saying goes, if it had a dance beat they loved it and not blowing my own trumpet I do have most records. Don’t get me wrong sometimes I have to swap records but I hate getting rid of them, whether I like them or not- if they have some history to them that’s it I’m hooked. You do slip up sometimes as you might make a mistake and get a Black issue and a Red issue of a record and they’ll turn around and go; “you’re wrong there Ginger, it’s not as rare or worth as much as you thought”. I’ve been around that much now I think I know what I’m doing now though. Soul’s such a big thing, I go to Italy- my favourite place for a holiday, Sweden , Spain, don’t really do Germany as there’s a lot of prawn sandwiches- but there’s some good people out there and everyone’s so warming. I’m getting older and people like you, a young girl who’s into it it’s so good to see. You yourself said hardly any of your mates are into it, but they come along and are smiling as soon as they get on the floor, it was the same in the 70s- people unknowingly love the scene . And it’s great to come somewhere like this, I mean I go to some places and I could tell you some horror stories where they’ve booked me in and passed me some ABBA records to put on. I’m trying to cut down now, I’m 65 in a few weeks and I’ve had a good time, I still love it but now I’d be happier going into a pub, I’m not bothered about the money because I’ve had a good time.

Try Northern Soul nights- that’s where you’ll find me, surrounded by a talcum powder cloud shuffling the night away to the resonating voices of The Dells or my soul queen- Etta James. Growing up in a family that have always preferred Aretha Franklin over One Direction and the brands of Fred Perry and Dr Martens over Gucci and Ralph Lauren, I’ve come to simply assume this way of life is something of normality, yet when I bring it up to my friendship group I’m faced with nothing but blank faces and a collective “huh?”. So how is it Northern Soul, a once revolutionary and powerful genre has been reduced “That’s where you’ll find me, to a niche market surrounded by a overshadowed talcum powder cloud by the likes of trashy shuffling the night away" songs like pop ‘Despacito’? And more importantly, what’s in store for the future of the soul scene if Generation Z is oblivious to such a prestigious era? Something needs to be done to encourage the younger generation to get involved and uphold such a scene for years to come- but what exactly? Enter; Walton Street Club, a deceivingly TARDIS-like building home to Hull Soul Club, an eclectic community of people passionate about one thing- soul. From my experience the loyal band of followers form more of a family than separated attendees, constantly welcoming and accepting new members regardless of any social or physical factor- even if you’re like me and have two left feet and a serious lack of rhythm, no judgement is cast if you’re simply there to enjoy the music and let yourself kick back (literally if you (Hello me) can) and most of all have fun. So, fast forward to the 23rd March 2018, the long anticipated 3rd Friday of the month were better. And then the black music came on , well the black muwhere Northern Soul legend; Ginger Taylor, is the guest sic of Motown ,Stax and Atlantic really were 63’, 64’ but I watched all DJ – bringing his years of expertise to the DJ decks, and these programmes I was into those programmes that had that feel for definitely putting on a show. Despite his notoriety Ginger music, there was a small community in Tormorden, and only 4 miles was more than happy to sit down and chat with me about away in Hebden Bridge, in that area it was a Rocker area, and by that I anything and everything. Here’s how it went; don’t mean Rock ‘n’ Roll- they all had black leather jackets and greasy hair and well I had bright ginger curly hair so I stuck out didn’t I. I’d I’ve been a dj as long as I’ve been a Man Utd. fan, I think have to say I was obsessed with The Supremes and Stevie Wonder, and it’s about 51 years now- no, I wouldn’t say I’ve dj’ed for I suppose that was the time I really got into it, clothes wise you know I 51 years because let’s say 51 years ago it wasn’t classed as have fond memories of being 15/16 and all waiting at bus stop to go to Northern Soul, it was classed as being a mod, so in them Burnley Mecca with my white suit on to escape the back and beyond days in the 60s; 64’ 65’ 66’, which in my opinion were the that’s the last stop of Tormorden, and before I knew it I was djing best years ever for music, I was into Spencer Davis Group there. This is a big wind up with my mates actually but I got sacked and couldn’t understand why The Beatles and Rolling from there as they asked for my national insurance number, which I Stones got all the young girls screaming and running didn’t have because obviously I wasn’t 18, and even at that age I had about as I’ll be honest with you I thought Spencer Dathe records they were playing at Twisted Wheel and places like that, so vis Group and later on Small Faces, and groups like that they wanted me on upstairs. Believe me they regretted it as in Tormor-

den we started our own community in a Ukrainian club and it went from strength to strength and we were pulling in anyone that was into soul music from Halifax or Burnley and Rochdale who came to see ‘‘Ginger Taylor and his mate’’- otherwise known as ‘Ginger and Eddie’, with the little Ukrainian club being our starting factor.

And when I was a teenager I won a competition to go and meet Jackie Wilson at Rainbow Theatre in Finsbury Park, that was in New Musical Express, I weren’t that into it as it wasn’t a soul magazin, but the people I was competing with, filling all these forms to go and meet him I thought why not and it went from there really. At this time the name Northern Soul didn’t exist but came about from a journalist Dave Godin, god bless him,

There’s another side to me now, I’m a huge Gregory Porter fan and I’m off to see him later on in the year then meeting up for a drink with a wonderful woman called Eloise Laws, who produced the best record of the 70s- and she must be in her 70s, if she’s listening to this she looks more 59 really!

There’s lots of other things as well, I wouldn’t say I live for Soul because I’ve got my family and friends who aren’t into the scene, I’ll have to quieten down soon and I suppose I am doing in a way, but it’s fab to come down here and meet everyone on the scene. I’m very fortunate for everyone on the scene as that’s what keeps me going.

I went there for the first time 2 weeks ago. It was amazing feeling to be there. I spend 3 hours exploring this musuem and I was looking for new experience.

When I got there with my brother, staff were great. When they saw us immediatly they came to us and asked us do we need any help? My brother parked his car near to Princes Quay and car park is very cheap, so you dont have to worry about it.

Humber Bridge Humber Bridge is the best place when you can walk with your close friends or familly. I went there with my friend around 5 pm, and we were in Shock, because when we got there we saw amazing views that I had or my friend never seen before. For me it was one of the best days of my life, because I always wanted to stand on one of the largest bridges and finally my dream came true. I highly recommend this for everyone who likes walking, looking at nice views, looking at the sunrise. Near to the Humber Bridge you can park your car for free, and next to the car park there is fantastic coffee shop that has some lovely drinks.

Hull & East R i d i n g Musuem is one of my favourite museum in my life. I really like spending couple of hours here, becase you can get very diffrent experience. My first visit there was 2 days ago, becasue I read many opinions about this museum, and I decided to go there and try it out myself. It was very good idea, because staff here were amazing, they asked me about everything and even one of them explained to me everything about this museum. It was quite hard to find a car park for my brother, so we parked near to Princes Quay.

The best vegetarian restaurant Ive ever been. I’m not a vegetarian, but I am in love with the food that they have.My friend said we should go there and try it as it has some amazing food.

So we went there and I tasted their food. It was amazing. To be sure, I dont like vegetarian’s food, but here, you can change your mind after tasting their food. My brother parked his car near to Princes Quay, because it’s so cheap to park there, even if it’s far away. I can say good things about staff, because they were very polite, they welcomed us from the start, so I really like this place.

Almost 3 years ago when I’ve been there for the first time. It was amazing feeling to see fantastic art works.

After that, I go there every four months to remind or even see something new. I really recomended this for people who are bored sitting at home and doing nothing, so you can come and get new experience in your life. Car park is nearly Princes Quay so you dont have to worry about that. I really like cominng there with my familly, because it’s great time to spend there with familly. Everything is for free so you don’t have to worry about the money.

any people associate a home with warmth, security and love- it provides a sense of belonging. Imagine having a long, tiring day then coming home to a warm cooked meal, a soft bed, the day’s dirt all washed away.

Except you don’t have a home to go to, you have no food, no bed but instead you are roaming the streets desperate for someone to be generous enough to give you a crumb of food, that you will be able to find a doorway that will protect you from the malicious winter weather so that you may get an hour or two of sleep. Is this really how a human should be living?

If we expect the basic standard of living of shelter, food, warmth and a bed, why shouldn’t we expect it for every other human being no matter their start in life or their past?

As a city, we claim we are doing enough to help the homeless however the numbers are growing every single year. Correct me if I’m wrong but if we were doing enough shouldn’t the numbers be going down not up? Since 2010 there has been a 114% increase, from 7 to 15 homeless people in Hull. The statics show what we were afraid of, we aren’t doing enough and we need

Light-stream locations so far KCOM has recently introduced their light-stream service, hopefully, the city of Hull doesn’t have to wait too long for this to be rolled out to all areas. KCOM, as a company, has achieved a lot, they started out as just a phone service, then once the internet was introduced they became the main internet and phone service provider for Hull, but now they won’t let anyone else enter to give us better internet.

They do represent Hull in a big way by owning both stadiums and sponsoring Hull City even though they aren’t the best. They painted one of their phone boxes gold to honour Luke Campbell for winning Gold in the Olympics.

Also, they are the only independent telephone and internet provider in th country they have introduced the Light-stream service coming to Hull.

However, even though KCOM is the main internet provider, this doesn’t mean that it is the best internet. There are issues with the internet that

KCOM provides, for example, my internet cuts out most of the time when no one is on it in my house. This might be because everyone in Hull is on it also but I have tried in the middle of the night and it’s still the same. So, when the light-stream does finally arrive in 2020, for my neighbourhood, it will be better than our current state or will it be exactly the same as it is now?

The other thing is that most people have complained about it at least once or twice, so what can KCOM do to make this better? Well we have two choices; they improve themselves or let someone takeover. Personally, I think they should improve themselves, the reason why is because they are a Hull company, which has been around for over a century and I don’t want to see a company, from Hull, go under.

His dream as a footballer, was to play in the most successful football leagues in the whole world, of which one of them is Britain’s Premier League. Due to his latest transfer, he was able to accomplish his goals, as the team was currently in a fairly stable position in the league.

Kamil was glad to be part of Hull city’s main team. He said “I’m happy that I signed the contract with Hull, ever since I’ve joined the team a month ago. (…) I’m determined to win the upcoming matches because this means a lot to me.

It’s been my dream ever since I was a little kid, watching football matches on television, to be part of one of those teams. I knew that since I’ve played in the French league, that I might have a chance to be able to be spotted by one of the teams and afterwards being able to join them.”

Kamil also mentioned that it wasn’t just Hull City that was interested in his transfers, other teams in the Premier League were keen to include the key player in their squad however, Hull was the most determined for Kamil to be part of their team. At his current position in Hull’s football team, Kamil’s market value as a player, has increased to the highest amount out of all his previous teams he’s played in, of which currently is £6.3 million since he’s joined the team.

Due to a large amount of Polish citizens in the city, Kamil’s popularity has increased the interest in the team from the Polish community, increasing the fan base of Hull city. This encourages Kamil to keep up the efforts and contact with fans as he said “I love the atmosphere of my people, like at home, where there are people all around you because you can understand them and they

Being able to meet these people helps me boost my confidence and the belief that I can be better each day.” This makes Kamil more admirable as a person and not just a football player because after playing matches, he often visits Izabela Wine Bar and Grill Restaurant, where most Polish people come and eat. This is where he gets the opportunity to meet, take photos and speak to the Polish community of Hull and its nearby areas.

This also helps Kamil due to the fact that it’s difficult for him to understand English, as it isn’t his primary language. He usually has a translator along his side and he also takes some English lessons, to keep up his multi-lingual skill. This allows him to still communicate with more fans because he also appreciates the rest of his fans that make up Hull City’s community because he’s classed as one of Hull’s best performing players in their club and he doesn’t want to let anybody down.

However, it’s important for Kamil himself to keep up his reputation, but since his transfer to Hull, the team has been on a downslope and by the end of the season of 2016-17, Hull City has been relegated to the Championship League and during the next season, the team’s performance hasn’t been the best, unfortunately. This lead to Kamil’s decision to rule out staying in Hull City for another season, as stated by Hull Daily Mail. Due to low chances of the team promoting back up to the Premier League, we shall see where Kamil’s future leads him. He will be remembered in the hearts of Hull City supporters and the team’s history.

Being locked in a room with no windows for an hour might not sound like a typical fun night out but don’t let that put you off. Escape rooms are all the rage at the moment and Hull is no different to the rest of the UK. Despite having two ‘Escape rooms’ in Hull, we were focused on ‘Escape rooms Hull’ which was started and is owned by two Hull lads.

Matt, who set up the Escape Rooms, said “Escape rooms started out with a guy in Japan who had the idea of getting people locked inside a room and having to solve puzzles to

Matt says that Prison break is his favourite room out of them all “We learnt a lot from doing the first two rooms so I think Prison break has benefited from that. It’s a competition, you have two groups of four trying to escape before one another so it gets really tense and really close at the end. There is a lot of shouting when two groups are trying to get out before each other.”

I was a little hesitant to try out a room as I thought that I wasn’t particularly clever or able to answer difficult questions but, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that wasn’t the case at all. I just had to think outside the box. I tried The Aviators Study and we got out in 52 minutes and 52 seconds which gave me a great sense of achievement as half way through, I thought there was no way in hell I would ever escape in time. I honestly had so much fun and can’t wait to go back and try all the other rooms.

The cycle of homelessness is not one that any person should have to face in their life.

It’s something that very few people would be able to handle. It shatters the lives of everyone who enters it. Hopes and dreams gone and forgotten.

Once you lose your home for one of a million different reasons, it’s near impossible to keep or get a job or funds to restart your life. To get somewhere you can call home is honestly so much harder than you could imagine.

If Hull did enough there wouldn’t be any homeless people.

If we are Hull, then this is our problem to solve!

I believe there is a solution to the problem, a way we can get the homeless of our streets, give them a home and some hope for the future.

A way we can end homelessness in Hull and make a difference in our city. Using up our old, abandoned or derelict houses and making use of what we have already got, instead of just knocking them down to build new and expensive housing

estates, helping the people who are really in need.

Here in Hull, we are forced to use KCOM, however, there a few places that don’t have wireless internet, which is what KCOM are in charge of. At this point, Wetherspoons is the only company to not have wireless internet, so in a way, you could think of them as the resistance for the internet against KCOM who in a way have enslaved us. Ironic that William Wilberforce, the man who abolished slavery, came from Hull and now look at it.

So how did it all start? KCOM started out as the ‘Hull Telephone Department’ which of course was about the phone service of Hull, this was established in 1904. They introduced the K6 phone box in 1936. In 1987, they went from Hull Telephone Department to Kingston Communications, which became ‘KC Telecommunications’. In 2004 they celebrated being active for a century and in 2012, they announced their ultrafast broadband. So, they have been around for quite some time, for over a century, and in that time we can see that they have managed to own pretty much everything, such as the KCOM stadium and KCOM Light-stream stadium.

W h e n ever I visit any town / city I always try to visit the local church.

This was without doubt one of the best. The architecture and stained glass windows are amazing to say it is only a small church. The people helping out inside were very polite and helpful during our visit. I had only a short period of time to look around but I will be returning shortly and be able to stay longer. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. There is a lot of internal work being undertaken to renovate this lovely building however that does not take away the beauty of the building overall. The stained glass windows, with the sunshine falling through them are a delight to behold. A lovely painting depicting the Last Supper is worth studying and have a good look at the lectern , you won’t be disappointed.

I was searching for good places to drink coffee, tea with friends, so I went through the Princes Avenue and I found this bar.(no alcohol) It has somthing that interested me from the beginning , so I said to friends that we have to go there.

The staff were soo good, because they were very helpful and nice to us and they offered help immediately.

The best thing that I remember from this place is the best coffee that I ever drunk. I highly recommended this bar for everyone who likes those kind of bars. You can park your car next to the bar so you don’t have to worry about it. We really like their pancakes, because it was awesome to taste. Also, it cost only £3, so it’s not much. Everyone can eat it and be happy as we were before. I really like their coffee with milk. So we mixed pancakes and coffee with milk and we were in the heaven, because it was soo delicious, and that’s why I really reccomend this.

The best aquarium I’ve ever been in my entire life. I went there 2 years ago for the first time, but since then I am comming there usually every month, because I felt in love from the first time. I saw many diffrent fishes, many sharkes and lots of diffrent animals that I can’t even explain. Next to the Deep you can park you car for very cheap price, so dont worry about your money. I highly recommended this for everyone who likes places such this.

It’s very good place to spend time there with the familly. The depp is only one in Hull and its very specific and The Deep is diffrent than other places such as this.

And in that time it wasn’t only a light day for Europe, but also for the people of Hull, which has bravely fought to protect the city and also for all the people that have lost their lives in those nightmares.

This was for sure the most terrifying war that this planet has seen so far, and hopefuly it will be the last one, or will it? We will just have to wait and see.

Hull Pride is an entirely free event that is hosted every year in our city centre and the intention of the event is to provide a platform for Hull’s LGBT+ community to give them a voice and to celebrate.

But that feeling of being safe did not last for long, of course, the war did not end there, even thouh the people of Hull thought that it was all over, and that they finally can live their lifes again as they used to do before the war.

We had a fabulous time. This was our first ever experience of an escape room. Our group of 4 adults and 2 children, solved the Aviators study in 49 minutes and 15 seconds. Everyone participated and the kids loved it! They can’t wait to do another room!

PARKERS RE-ENERGIZED

BY A GREAT TEAM SPIRIT! PARKERS is a famous Hull pub and is now one of the friendliest and most welcoming in the City these days. Kriss and Julez, who have achieved this transformation, have been at the helm for nearly 2 years now.

They both explained to Tenfootcity, how they did it; “We have tried to regenerate the trade that was lost and to reconnect with the area, the locals old and new, to show them that the original Parkers was still very much alive and kicking. We are still progressing, hopefully in the right direction, and this will continue as long as we are here. Hopefully for at least the next 10 years!”

The main attraction of Parker’s is that it’s a very friendly community bar with the added advantage of it having a great match day spirit for both Hull City & Hull FC games at the KCOM. In fact it also extends this friendly welcome to ‘Away Fans’ as you can easily tell by the ceiling full of Scarfs donated by visiting fans, from all over the country, who always return here.

So, it’s a broad customer base as Kriss described, “They are all different types of customers but they all see Parkers as their ‘home’ and that’s just the point, they have been welcomed into our own HOME, as this is what Parker’s actually is to Julez and myself, along with all of our staff and our regulars.”

The Pub stands on the corner of Anlaby Road and Walton Street, right next to West Park, where the Stadium is situated, and has now been smartly painted back to Cream & Black stripes, which looks really striking.

The place also has ghosts of the past who still visit the Pub. They’ve actually been seen walking in the back bar! These are mainly previous owners and also the families that have drank in Parker’s for generations, just checking that things are going well. Thankfully they seem to feel happy with the management style of Kriss and Julez at the moment, so they don’t cause them any problems!

Gotta say, they’re all great people at Parkers!

They now have plans to keep improving for the future…

“We are having the Beer Garden re-developed in the next couple of months to enhance the outside further and we’re planning some great outdoor events utilising the large space that we have available. These include an outside Pro-Wrestling Exhibition and also a Charity Boxing event at beginning of July. There’s also a ‘Bike-Night’ planned with Rock-bands, in conjunction with our neighbours, 5-Ways Motor Cycle Shop. We’ve also got Family-Fun weekends with Fairground rides, Bouncy Castles, etc., as well as a successful Sunday football team that supports the pub. We are also now proud to be major sponsors for one of Hull’s up-n-coming young pro-fighters, Ryan Gibbons… so we are the pre, and after, venue for all of their Boxing -Promotions.”

Finally, they were both keen to emphasise that Parkers was built on a great ‘Team’ atmosphere…

“We can hire out our whole pub for your private events, or celebrations, dates permitting of course. So we’ve really done our best to re-energize Parkers, and our approach, it seems, has been working well. There’s been lots of hard work from not just Julez and myself, but the whole Parker’s team, because that is what we are… We are a team! We never forget that. There’s the Team behind us that brings it all together to make Parker’s what it is today and we’d like them to know that we really appreciate all of them, from the Mad Monday’s Gang, to the Regulars, to the Sports-Supporter’s, to the visitors. They’re all part of the new Parkers family!”

“Comedy is now more important than ever. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves, at pomposity and hypocrisy, wherever it occurs.” – Bill Bailey.

Tenfootcity spoke to Bill Bailey before his Larks in Transit tour which visits Hull in May. The show promises to be a hilariously idiosyncratic and personal take on the past. With cowbells.

“It’s a voyage through my mind, about things that interest me and where comedy has taken me,” Bailey says. “It has become quite a bit about the history of Britain and finding connections with the past and using personal recollections as jumping-off points.”

In the 2017 ‘City Of Culture’ year, Bailey brought his ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’ to Hull. It proved to be an inspiration for his forthcoming tour.

“The seeds of some of the ideas were sown when I curated that exhibition at the Maritime Museum during the Hull City of Culture,” he says. “That was great fun. Finding these objects and inventing completely fictitious stories and history around them. In an abstract way, that led me to talking about the history of simple mundane things. Like gestures.

There’s a section in the show that deals with rude gestures and insults.

These have a long history which go back thousands of years.”

So, no reality TV for him, then! Bailey seems more than happy sticking with the comedy, relieved that he didn’t pack in the entertainment business for a job in telesales, which he had seriously considered earlier in his career.

“I think I dodged a bullet there,” he laughs. “I don’t think I’d have lasted much longer anyway. I was a very poor salesman. I was told I wasn’t dressed smartly enough, and I kept saying ‘But I’m on the phone. What does it matter what I wear? I could be wearing a chicken suit!’ We got off on the wrong foot and if I hadn’t been sacked we would probably have come to blows. So, it’s probably just as well!”

The telesales industry’s loss was comedy’s gain.

Bailey is aware of comedy’s heritage and is mindful of his own place in the lineage of the comic tradition. “I like to do things that are timeless, like doing things on cowbells or horns,” he says. “I think I can almost imagine someone touring like this in the Victorian era, going around the music halls and doing tunes of the day on cowbells. Then, I’ll play something on the ‘Theremin’ and there’s also a section where I use an iPhone as an instrument. I like to see those connections, to show the passage of time through comedy.”

Bill sees laughter as an antidote to the malaise of modern society; “Set against the division that we are now facing and greater unrest, uncertainty and turmoil in world politics, the pursuit of happiness is harder than at any moment in history,“ he states. Comedy is now more important than ever. We need to be able to laugh at ourselves, at pomposity and hypocrisy, wherever it occurs. Comedy is about cutting down to size those who are trying to lord it over us - and it always has been.

“Music hall performers would lampoon the leaders and politicians of the time and people would love them for holding up those we are supposed to look up to and treating them with irreverence. I think that’s a healthy part of democracy and society. Music hall was irreverent, dangerous and kind of revolutionary, in a way. Part of what I do is to maintain that tradition.”

Given Bailey’s love of the natural world and pro-environmental politics, had he ever been tempted to “go jungle” and appear on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here?

“I’ve been asked to do that show but it’s never going to happen,” he says, assuredly. “Basically, they want you to crack up, and have a meltdown on camera, wailing and gnashing your teeth and saying: ‘OH NO, I’VE GOT NO WI-FI! OH NO, THERE’S NO KETCHUP!’ They don’t want me sitting there going, ‘this is great’. They want people to freak out.”

The comedian believes that Shows like ‘I’m a Celebrity’… ”Get people who have worked in an office their whole life and whose idea of a holiday is that they went to Margate and went on the big dipper. Then they get them to catch fish and extract water and cook and fend for themselves.

Of course, they are not going to cope. I find them to be exploitative and cruel shows and there’s a sense of vicarious pleasure in seeing someone’s discomfort, which I don’t really like.”

STREET-ART-MEANING. HULL’S OWN: PREG. In some ways local Graffiti-Artist, Preg, is Hull’s answer to the (sadly) ‘much worshipped’ Banksy. But unlike the condescending intellectual elitism that is often conveyed by that particular artist, we regard the approach of our very own Preg (just representing ‘everything’ through random images) is far less polarised, much more down to earth, less patronising, and much more refreshing, due to its inherent honesty.

We’re proud to have Preg from Hull, so Tenfootcity asked him to explain himself….

What about the comparisons to the “great” anonymous one then?

“I think the Banksy Comparisons came about as a result of the media’s appetite for clickbait and perhaps the publics limited experience with the understanding of his work, ie …. ‘Any work which is figurative , in black & white and tells a story, then it obviously must be a Banksy’ ….

When in fact there are many street artists creating this type of work and there always has been.” (In other words he doesn’t have the monopoly on this style - Ed.)

We know you’re not pompous enough to try to be “anonymous” so who are you Preggy-Boy? “I’m a fine artist from Hull who took a wrong turning many years ago and ended up trying to put food in the fridge by being a gas fitter. I’ve made art since I was a kid and have submitted work to numerous galleries over the years, although the gallery pieces tend to be more abstract in nature. I’m interested in all art-forms and influenced by the old masters.

Painting/sculpture make my juices flow, so that’s what I do. My guerrilla pieces on the streets are narrative paintings, reporting on things and issues that people are talking about.

(To reflect the public consciousness in some way –Ed.) I may agree, or actually disagree, with what they’re saying, but it doesn’t stop me from reporting and reflecting it, just to make people consider it.”

How do you feel about some of the reactions you’ve had to your work?

Having my work compared favourably or otherwise to other artists’ works is just fine for me as I thrive on critical input. The piece that made people upset recently, on behalf of others, (as is usually the case, ha ha! - Ed.) was called ‘70 Years and Counting.’

It was a pro-Palestinian piece with conflicting metaphors, just designed to make people think. I liked the publicity and controversy it created, and no, I wasn’t bothered by the (ridiculous) “racism” accusations.

In fact when I get a good mixture of feedback I feel it’s a job well done.

On the other hand if everyone likes my work I’m suspicious. Anyway, someone painted over that particular piece, so I just replaced it with ‘3 Hail Marys,’ a representation of paedophilia within the Catholic Church, so there’s another one for them to discuss and think about.”

Preg sounds fantastic to us. He reflects our very own philosophy at Tenfootcity perfectly. Any ‘Art’, any form of expression, in any medium, must have a purpose or a meaning. If anything you do, or create, or even say, doesn’t get a reaction from someone, then basically you’ve failed to achieve anything – and, as we know at Tenfootcity, … all publicity is good publicity! We love Preg, his art, and his attitude, cos he’s one of our own! Give him a wall.

I DO LOVE A HAPPY ENDING! (BUT IT’S NOT ALL OVER YET!)

“Songs From Ivanhoe” The new Album from Hull’s most popular ‘Family-Band’ The Happy Endings…

The Band consists of Emma Fee (guitar, vocals, keyboard), Rachel Fee (guitar, vocals, keyboard), Sara Fee (vocals, percussion), Adam Fee (guitar), Mike Jessop (percussion and recording engineer/producer) and John Cox (on bass for live shows.)

Emma explained to Tenfootcity how they were musically influenced in the early days...

“Four of us are siblings, so we grew up together in a very musical household. Our Dad played bass in a band with our Mam’s brothers, so we were used to having musical instruments lying around the house for us to pick up and play. Our Mam would listen to The Beatles, Badfinger, The Band, The Zombies and tons of other good stuff and we would sing along to their songs with her as we were growing up. Our parents’ decent taste in music really influenced our song-writing actually.”

So how, exactly, did the actual band come about?

“The formation of our band began with Rachel and Emma playing in covers bands in the early noughties. We ventured into playing acoustic open-mic nights, testing the water with material we’d been writing. We started to enjoy playing our own songs more than other people’s songs and our audience also seemed to like it, which encouraged us to do more of our own stuff. Later, our brother, Adam, joined us on lead guitar and after various percussion and bass personnel, we eventually arrived at the line up that we’re with now. We are a very close unit, not only with 4 of us being family, but also Mike being Emma’s boyfriend! Mike also records and engineers all of our recordings. For the live shows, we bring in our good friend John Cox. He is an amazing musician in his own right - he recorded some of our earlier material.

He’s known us long enough to realise our rehearsals are mega-relaxed and we get very little music done. He must have the patience of a saint!”

So what is the overall philosophy of The Happy Endings?

“We have a lot of fun in the band, both creatively and socially. That doesn’t help our productivity levels at times, but it gives us the freedom to let the creativity flow naturally and at ease. Music should never feel like a chore. Mike built our home studio, so we are really fortunate that we can dip in and out of it, in our spare time, without the time and cost constraints associated with booking somewhere. We all have full time dayjobs and Sara and Rach have kids, so they’re often in tow playing together in the next room while we’re recording. We don’t really plan how an album will sound, but we do have a good idea of how each song should sound. As we are all normally on the same page when it comes to musical tastes, the songs tend to sound good sitting together on the same album. For us, if a song is written well and you get a decent recording and performance, then you’re 90% the way there. The other 10% is just spent tarting the sound quality up with a little experimentation. “ Tell us about this new Album that you’re about to release then…

“We feel the songs on this album are more cohesive than those on our 2017 album. We’ve learned a lot since then. The last album was made when we were figuring recording techniques out and was all quite guitar-based.

The new album has more piano, smatterings of synth, mellotron, digital beats, but not straying too far from the Happy Endings signature sound. Most of our songs are written from personal experience or from observation, and there’s a definite 60’s feel to some of the tracks, with the Spector-esque reverb on the drums and vocals. This was probably because of what we were listening to at the time, rather than a conscious effort. Adam made his song-writing debut with a couple of instrumental tracks and this is the first time Sara has appeared on record too, so it’s a bigger, better, more textured album all round. The album title “Songs from Ivanhoe” comes from the name of our house and the fact that all of the music for that album was created there. Simple as!”

“Songs from Ivanhoe” will be launched with a live Happy Endings performance at Kardomah94 on Alfred Gelder Street, in Hull, on Friday 26th April. Tickets are available from ‘Eventbrite’ and also from the venue @ £6 each.

TED KEY AND THE KINGSTONS RACONTEUR ROCK Ted Key and the Kingstons were formed in 2017. The band are Ted Key on vocals and guitar, Paul Greendale on bass and Nick Harrison on drums. Ted Key was an original member and co-songwriter in the 1980s iconic, ground breaking band The Housemartins. He received BPI gold discs for his contributions to the albums “London 0 – Hull 4”, and “Now That’s What I Call Quite Good” and toured with the Housemartins for almost two years before leaving to continue with cult Hull punk-a-billy band The Gargoyles. The Gargoyles are legends of the Hull music scene, one of the best and certainly the most entertaining live bands in Hull in the ‘80s. Their gigs were unforgettable for anyone who had the (mis?)fortune to witness them and they even scored a top 40 hit with ‘Mad Men from the Planet Sex’.

Paul was co-songwriter and keyboard player for D:Ream who had a string of pop hits in the ‘90s, including the number one smash, ‘Things Can Only Get Better’.

Alongside DJ Chris Stevenson he formed the electronic dance outfit Lunar Asylum in 1995. Nick is a regular on the festival scene, organising Glastonbury’s Green Field. Whilst living in San Francisco in the late 70’s, he performed at a number of legendary punk venues alongside The Dead Kennedys and The Offs.

Raconteur Rock is the band’s debut album. It is a blend of punk-influenced folk/rock/blues with a number of tracks leaning towards a dub-reggae style. Lyrically, the 10 songs included on the album have a heavy Hull influence, referencing Hull landmarks and locations such as Ella Street, the Adelphi Club and Dead Bod, amongst others things, and chronicling the life, the humour and the struggles of the city’s characters which are sung in a Hull/Northern working-class dialect by Ted. Opening with the single, ‘The Queen of Ella Street’ the most poppy

track on the album, which, dare I say it, has a definite Housemartins feel about it! (I think it’s Ted’s harmonica actually.) The track is followed by the distinctly dubbish ‘Len’s Lion’. Other tracks which owe a debt to reggae include ‘The Bridge to Nowhere’ a scathing condemnation of the local authority’s business plans for the city and the current political climate of austerity and ‘As Drunk as a Drunk Man Can Be’. Also, ‘Anarchy in Argos’ laments the anti-social behaviour of sections of the criminal underclass, an ironic take on the Clash’s ‘Bankrobber’, perhaps?

Stand out tracks for me are ‘(You Treat Me Like I’m) Dead Bod’ and ‘Oh Cruella’ with the album invoking the spirit of pre-punk pub-rock which reminded me of Dr Feelgood or even Nick Lowe at times. Raconteur Rock concludes with ‘A Thousand Bands for a Hundred Gigs’ which condemns the closing of live music venues (Pay to Play? Now what twisted, corrupt fucker came up with that idea?). However, despite all the doom and gloom, if you look hard enough there’s still some great music out there, with loads of new bands getting up and giving it a go.

And, on the evidence of Raconteur Rock, Ted Key and the Kingstons, with all their previous combined experience, are still belting out some excellent stuff.

JOE SOLO… OUR VERY OWN TENFOOTCITY WRITER IS BECOMING A PROTEST-SONG LEGEND! Tenfootcity’s Joe Solo is a musician, writer and activist from Hull, now based in Scarborough. He fronted the punk band, Lithium Joe, during the ‘90s (who may actually be making a re-appearance soon! – Ed.)… and, since then, he has carved a name for himself as one of the finest purveyors of the Folk-Punk Protest-Song genre, placing him in the lineage of Woody Guthrie, Phil Ochs and Billy Bragg. In 2018 he was awarded the Gerrard Winstanley Gold Spade Award for “Outstanding Contribution to Socialism”, joining other left-wing luminaries: Tony Benn, Maxine Peake, Jimmy McGovern and Ken Loach. (So that’s how respected and recognised he is these days! –Ed.) These are 3 of his current Albums that are avaialable right now… (and every one of them that is sold also gives a direct donation to certain causes. See Joe’s own article on page 51.)

THE PAST WON’T LAST FOREVER.

This 8 track EP, released in 2018, highlights Joe’s uncompromising socialist beliefs. A number of the tracks take actual events as their starting point, such as the racist attack depicted on ‘England Was That Man on the Train’, whist others delve into British history. ‘Many a Devil’ chronicles the Peterloo Massacre (In Manchester in 1819, a 600,00 strong demonstration by Working-Class people for parliamentary reform was attacked by the British Cavalry, resulting in dozens of protesters deaths and hundreds of injuries) and the tender melancholy of the song is augmented beautifully by the addition of Rebekah Findlay on violin. Similarly uplifting is the addition of the Hatfield-Main Colliery Brigade Choir on ‘Rise Up’, a song highlighting the bravery of the striking miners (more of that later). And on ‘Jayaben Desai’, Joe honours the leader of the 1976-78 Grunswick dispute. Joe’s mission on The Past is not merely to entertain, but also to educate on our shared history of common struggle and to provide an inspiration.

HEADSCARVES AND HURRICANES

On the sleeve notes to Headscarves and Hurricanes, Joe writes: “This album is a love letter to the spirit of a city that I will always call home,” with the album focussing on the 1968 Triple Trawler Tragedy. Tracks like ‘Rainy Day at Rayners’, ‘Drinking our Way Home’ and ‘The Steam Out’ depict the hard-drinking lifestyles of the Hull Trawlermen, whereas on ‘Sailing Day’, Joe sings about their superstitions, capturing the constant fear the community faced as to the hazardous nature of their work. Two tracks concern Lillian Bilocca, the indomitable leader of the fishermen’s wives who successfully campaigned for improved safety regulations for the fishing fleet. The album closes with the acapella ‘Haul Away, Boys’ with Joe backed on vocals by the ‘Commoners Choir.’ Elsewhere, Rebekah Findlay’s violin and Joe’s harmonica supplement his voice and acoustic guitar to make a stirring and emotional evocation of the Hessle Road fishing community.

NEVER BE DEFEATED.(2019 RE-RELAEASE.)

On this album, Joe salutes the bravery of the pit communities during the 1985-85 miners’ strike. It is a call for solidarity, opening with ‘Coal Not Dole’ which declares “On our own we’re nothing/ But the union makes us strong.” During the dispute, the thugs in uniform were given carte-blanche by their Tory masters to transform the mining communities into a militarised police state and two tracks condemn the action of the police: ‘The Enemy Within’ and ‘They Can’t Do That To Me’ which sees Rebekah Findlay take over the vocals. Bristling with righteous anger at the injustice meted out at the striking miners, ‘The Long March Back’ warns “They came for us/They’ll come for you”, ... a warning which has come to pass, as every working person in this country has paid for the miners’ defeat ever since.

Originally released in 2015, Never Be Defeated is now available in a 2 CD special edition with a bonus disc of 10 additional tracks.

THE GOLD NEEDLES DEBUT ALBUM, PEARLS. Still largely unrecognised as one of Hull’s best current bands, ‘The Gold Needles’ are Simon Dowson (vocals and guitar) Dave Burbage (guitar) and Mark English (keyboards) with the recent addition of Carl Slaughter (bass) and Justin Davidson (drums). Pearls is their debut LP, the second release from the Spin It label, (Spin-It Records in Hull’s Trinity Market.) The album was issued on CD in the US on Kool Kat Music and, in the UK, is available on beautiful gold vinyl. A delightful pop package, Pearls has become a real regular on my turntable since its release last year.

The Gold Needles have been compared to The Church and Big Bop Deluxe, but it’s impossible to pigeonhole a band who meld such a diverse range of pop influences.

From the power-pop of the opening title track, the album incorporates psychedelia and prog-rock, and on the instrumental ‘Service with a Smile’, with its driving Stax bassline, organ and angular guitar, even throws a touch of original R&B into the mix. Coming across like an indie-modified Booker T and the MGs, ‘Service With a Smile’ is definitely one for the dancefloor, whereas ‘First Sunrise’ and ‘Samantha Says’ are more laid back, hinting at the pastoral side of psychedelia with folkacoustic guitar coming to the fore.

This is an album to lose yourself in the melodic spaces, with the song-writing craft and musicianship elevating Pearls above just standard ‘60s revivalism. Like bands such as Temples and Tame Impala, Gold Needles draw on the 60’s pop and rock genres to create something which is wholly their own and defies categorisation.

Despite the psych and prog-rock references, for me the band can just as easily be compared to the 60’s-influenced indie guitar-jangle-pop of bands like The Pastels, The Television Personalities or The

Chameleons and on ‘Too Much Time’ the sound even hints at The Stranglers!

With the Gold Needles declaring that their “aim is simply to celebrate the eclectic, the forgotten and the yet to be discovered”, Pearls closes with ‘Dreamscape Time’, its electronic synth opening and sample (of the moon landings?) segueing into Floyd-esque psychedelic-folkinfused-rock. It’s a fitting finale to an album with such an epic sense of popular music’s rich heritage. Brilliant.

Gold Needles’ 2nd album is expected sometime in the Spring on the US Jem Records label, who have a very respectable historical reputation, being responsible for Cheap Tricks’ breakthrough LP, At Budokan and distributing the debut Simple Minds and Siouxsie and the Banshees LPs. There’s also a whisper of the band supporting a big indie outfit from the late ‘80s/early 90s later in the year.

The Gold Needles will also play at Liverpool’s legendary Cavern Club on the 19th of May if you fancy a trip over from Hull? If you’re not already familiar with this excellent underground Hull band, you really ought to aquaint yourself.

(Great music from the past that you really ought to check out….)

Otis Redding - Otis Blue (1965) Otis Blue was Redding’s third LP, featuring mostly cover versions of other artists’ songs. This was a common trait in soul music at the time, resulting in several outstanding recordings being made of the same song. Otis Blue’s covers include ‘Change Gonna Come’ (Sam Cooke) and ‘Satisfaction’ (Jagger and Richards) There is a beautiful symmetry about the fact that Redding covered a Stones song which was originally written as tribute to the great man himself. The record also features Redding’s self-penned ‘Respect’, later recorded by Aretha Franklin.

Recorded at Stax’s studio in Memphis, Otis Blue features Booker T and the MGs, whose music was arguably the greatest influence on the Southern Soul sound of the label.

A legend in the world of soul and R&B, two years after making the album, Redding would tragically die in a plane crash. He was just 26 years of age.

Super Furry Animals – Radiator (1997) “I just like the idea of creating cultural havoc in our time,” SFA’s Gruff Rhys told Melody Maker in 2000. The Welsh psychedelic mavericks were never content to play the rock and roll game.

Their guerrilla tactics included having mugshots of Welsh drug smuggler, Howard Marks, on the cover of their debut LP, Fuzzy Logic, inviting Paul McCartney to munch celery and carrots to mix into the track ‘Receptacle for the Respectable’ and having 40-foot inflatable bears manufactured to accompany them on their Radiator tour. But for sheer lunacy, nothing tops SFA’s decision to use the money allocated by Creation records to publicise their 4th single to buy a tank. The armoured vehicle was painted blue and emblazoned with the band’s name and the single title (‘If You Don’t Want me to Destroy You’). Decks and speakers were installed, converting the tank into a soundsystem, which was taken to festivals and even driven across London and parked outside Radio 1 to blare out the new single. Such stunts made complete sense to the band who considered the money spent on the tank as being preferable to spending tens of thousands of pounds on a full-page ad in the NME! (Now that’s what I call Fuzzy Logic.)

Radiator’s blissfully incongruous blend of rock, psychedelia and electronica featured the singles ‘The International Language of Screaming’, ‘Play it Cool’, ‘Demons’ and ‘Hermann Loves Pauline’, which idiosyncratically details the biographies of Albert Einstein and Marie Curie and has Rhys informing us that “Marie Curie was Polish born but French bred (Ha ha! French Bread!).”

Super Furry Animals were the most adventurous, bonkers and greatest band of their era.

The Slits – Cut (1979) The Slits were Ari Up (vocals), Viv Albertine (guitar), Tessa Pollitt (bass) and Palmolive (drums). In their early days, they toured with The Clash and the Buzzcocks, displaying every inch of the punk attitude as their male counterparts. By the time of their debut LP, they had replaced Palmolive on drums with Budgie(who later would go on to Siouxsie and the Banshees). Their raw and chaotic live sound was considerably smoothed down on Cut, but this incredible LP remains a testament to the girls’ musical and songwriting energies.

Blending punky, clipped guitars with dub reggae influences (the LP was produced by Dennis Bovell) with an extraordinary, in-your-face, vocal delivery by Ari Up, as young females, the band struggled to gain the respect they deserved from a misogynistic music industry. The Slits had a gobful more talent than a lot of inferior punk bands held in much higher esteem.

Listen to their single ‘Typical Girls‘ to appreciate their leery attitude and talent. (“Who invented the typical girl/ Whose bringing out the new improved model?/ And there’s another marketing ploy/ Typical girl gets the typical boy”). The B-side was an incredible cover of the Marvin Gaye classic ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine.’ The Slits. Brilliant.

Michael Jackson – Off the Wall (1979)

Before flying to Neverland to become “Wacko-Jacko”, Jackson was the “King of Pop”, releasing a string of infectious hits both with the Jackson 5 and as a solo performer. Three years before Thriller’s stratospheric success, Jackson released his finest solo LP, Off the Wall: a brilliant collection of soul, funk and disco. For me, the album gets the nod over Thriller if only because it doesn’t have that nauseating talkie bit with Paul McCartney which comes in just before the fade-out on ‘The Girl is Mine’. Still a legend.

Another Hull ‘Vintage’ to enjoy….

Mike & Tina with some of their mid-week ‘Ale-Trail’ regulars in front of the Hull Art Wall.

The Vintage Bar on Silver street, has really established itself as part of the ‘Old Town Circuit’ now, having been launched as their very first project, by partners Mike and Tina nearly two years ago. Mike had a past as a regional manager for a drinks retailer in this area, which meant he spent quite a lot of time in Hull and he fell in love with our City. (And also with his partner, a local lass Tina, who now runs the bar with him Btw!) Mike explained to Tenfootcity…

“I already knew Hull was a nice place with a really friendly attitude, so this was the ideal place for Tina and myself to open our own place. We spent a lot of time looking around and when we found this original Jewellers shop, in the Old Town, we immediately realised that this was the ideal location for us. The exterior, and the feel and look of the old traditional place, felt just right, and Vintage seemed to be the ideal name to complement that location and the atmosphere of the place.”

They’ve now achieved what they were aiming for. The Bar is obviously busy on weekends when the Old Town pub-scene enjoys its best activity, of course, but they also have a steady stream of regular visitors throughout the week and this is due to their welcoming, friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere, as Mike continued…

“We have a really broad age-range of visitors and regulars throughout the week because, with our décor and furniture, we hope we’ve created a really comfortable, homely and welcoming, traditional Bar, whilst also offering a good range of Real Ales, Craft beers, top-name spirits and quality wines of course.

And then, when the Old town is obviously more busy on the weekends, we attract a whole different crowd with a more vibrant atmosphere.”

So, a great place to relax into then, when you may have just finished work, or a shopping trip, in the Old Town area. (You can also get nice fresh, homemade bar-snacks here too because they have an arrangement with a food outlet/caterer, just next door!) Another great reason to relax here too, is that it’s actually more than just a great bar, it’s also one of the Old Town’s best local Art Galleries! The walls are bedecked with lovely pieces by Hull artists and you can buy any piece you want direct from the wall (for really affordable prices btw) - so if you’d like a unique original piece for own place. Go and have a look – we saw some great local work on show there.

On top of all this, they also have Live Music on offer.

On Friday nights, and also Sunday afternoons, they have Acoustic musicians performing, and this ranges from traditional acts playing classic Pop, Blues and Rock songs, through to up-and-coming artists performing new and original material.

IT’S ALL GREEK TO ME. Do you want to feel like you’re on holiday in Greece? Well you should get yourself to the Greek then.

The Greek in Hessle (and also the original on Princes Ave) are not your typical restaurants. It doesn’t have the standard starters, main courses and puddings… it just serves a Meze. I asked for an explanation of what a ‘Meze’ actually means to Greek people, to its Greek staff – and therefore to its customers? John, (the genuine Greek owner) kindly explained to me…

“A Meza is a celebration of food combined with good company, mixed in and stirred with love and fresh ingredients. In reality, it means this is actually my house that you’re being welcomed into, to come and dine with me. That is the real meaning and that is the atmosphere that we want to create.”

So there you have it. It’s a friendly, down-to-earth and welcoming philosophy rooted in real Greek hospitality. A Meza is not just a quick meal out though. It’s actually a “feast”, an occasion to relax with friends, to enjoy a variety of sharing platters that devour your eyes and tummy. Little plates of goodness created and served with utterly authentic Greek hands.

There’s no hurry either, a Meze isn’t about rushing, eating fast, and then hurrying off. So order some drinks, and a few plates, and just… well, relax. Want some more? Order a few more then, …and so on. Soon you’ll feel like you’ve drifted away into a small Greek village and you’ve left Hull behind.

I’m saying this hand on heart too, The Greek has literally got it all. The Décor, the ambience, the chic design and a true Greek atmosphere.

So, sitting in the Greek and sampling the friendly vibe, I was surrounded by so many different kinds of people and situations. A family dining out, couples seated romantically and a couple at the bar having drinks and this was just a mid-Saturday lunch! Plates, boards and drinks flowed, and everyone stopped to look at the next lot of food being brought out, saying, “Can I have that too please, what is it?” It was a great ‘community’ type of feeling.

I began with an authentic Greek pitta that’s descends from John’s family. An aubergine dip, prawns with the shell on, alongside the speciality village sausage and, of course, some tzatziki. I honestly can say I love the Greek. From the mirrored tiles, to the vintage dresser, the whole place is ‘off the hook’, damned beautiful and it’s really the best place I’ve eaten in Hull for a long time. The prawns were served with Greek oregano (brought in especially from Greece for authenticity which John is big on actually) Lemon, olive oil and served with a hand-made olive bread, just made, that day, in house. John asked me to try the bread before I dipped it into the prawn juices. I did. It was like a light cloud, beautifully filled with plump olives which were also brought in from Greece of course. As for the sensational taste of dipping it in the prawn juices with lemon and oregano, it was on another level. I’m a huge fan of lemon, so it was the perfect combination of sweet, salt and herbs. I also had an aubergine caviar, which sounds rather bourgeois, I know, but it is a Greek dip that I love. A garlicky, chunky one with tomato herbs and vinegar, served cold. I just sat and devoured that and felt no guilt whatsoever! It was a great accompaniment for the village sausage, over chips, served with lemon and mustard. I loved that the sausage was cooked sliced in half and scored on top. It was a bounty of flavour, texture and aroma which took me back to many other food adventures.

My definitive thoughts on the Greek is that there is nothing to beat this authentic experience. It’s absolutely faultless and divine. If you’ve sampled The Greek on Princes Ave, you’ll fall head over heels for this second version in Hessle.

They have private dining areas, outside seating, bags of love right inside the restaurant and they also offer outsidecatering for any of your special occasions. There’s literally nothing like it in Hull. So ‘Go Greek’, either to this new one in Hessle, or to the original on Princes Avenue…. get involved in the atmosphere and take a mini holiday, right on your own doorstep.

Reflecting the heritage of Hull’s Maritime & Sea-Food History.

James and Paula, the creators and owners of this spectacular Sea-Food restaurant, which is a new jewel-in-the-crown of Hull’s culinary offering have been integral to the food-catering and restaurant scene in Hull for over 27 years as a couple now, and, in this time, they’ve really contributed massively to the food reputation of our City.

They actually started with a “Designer Sandwich shop” and soon progressed to opening their first restaurant which was Pelhams, serving traditional English dishes, upstairs at Ye Olde White Harte in the Old Town. Following the success of that first venture they moved on to opening their very first restaurant, in their own premises, which was Stanley’s on Ferensway, offering a range of international dishes. Stanley’s really established itself, over at least eight years, as a really popular top-quality place and cemented the reputation of James as one of the most respected Chefs in our City.

Then, after an ill-fated decision to sell-up to establish a “Gastro Country-Country Pub” in East Yorkshire, the welcome they encountered from the ‘set in their ways’ old-fashioned locals wasn’t a great one to say the least! Needless to say, it was almost like burning torches and pitch forks at midnight (ha ha!) so, before they ended up in a ‘Wicker Man’ they decided to cut their losses, get out and come back to the real people! (That’s us btw.) That strange experience, and their following decision, turned out to be a perfect example of the meaning of ‘serendipity’ – because it led to them finding this perfect location on Hull’s fashionable Humber Street, on the Marina, in order to open Humber Fish Restaurant, specialising ‘Solely’ (see what I did there?).. in Sea-Food, in all of its delicious and beautiful incarnations, which has always been a particular passion of James.

So Humber Fish is still less than a year old but as James told us, “Since opening up, our feet haven’t touched the ground.” (Which tells you something about the reputation of the guy actually.)

We wanted to create a “London MarketStyle fashionable approach to Sea-Food but also with a down-to-earth Hull seafaring atmosphere, which is why we have the upside-down boat suspended from the ceiling, the sea-life graphics, ship memorabilia, drift-wood, lobster pots and great old photos of Hull’s trawler industry. ” It isn’t just ‘rustic’ though, it also has a luxurious side to it too, as James continued..

“We’re developing a luxurious rear Courtyard with stylish furniture and outdoor heating, and we also have an exclusive private dining area, so you can actually book yourself and your group onto the “Captains Table.”

Sounds fantastic doesn’t it? And it is actually. James explained that they are now…

“The only Independent Sea-Food Restaurant in Yorkshire.”

Which explains the massive instant popularity that they’ve enjoyed since opening, which means that you now have to book at least three weeks in advance to get yourself a table. (My favourite table was the one with the Aquarium full of exotic fish right next to it!) Humber Fish is a great success story for the true food-lovers of Hull, and our wider reputation, and Tenfootcity is well proud of it and pleased about their success, because they do actually deserve it, after years of dedication to our culinary scene in this City.

THE SHINING

Dawn of the Dead was the second of George A. Romero’s zombie classics, following on from his seminal Night of the Living Dead (1968). Made during the period of the Tet Offensive with the US public’s dissatisfaction with the Vietnam war at its height, the film has been considered to reflect issues such as the Cold War and the Vietnam conflict. Similarly, the assassinations of Malcolm X in ‘65 and Martin Luther King in ’68 resulted in the film resonating with the civil rights movement and reflecting concerns about US racism. With Dawn of the Dead, Romero turned his gaze upon US capitalism.

The gorefest is set inside an abandoned shopping mall, with images of zombies lurching around the mall used to satirise the dehumanizing influence of rampant consumerism. (Imagine Tesco’s

Stephen King hated Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of his 1977 novel so much that he made a mini-series in 1997, attempting to redress the perceived failings of Kubrick’s vision. King’s animosity to the film is perhaps understandable, as Kubrick has abandoned the moral tone of the original and reduced the novel’s emphasis on the supernatural for a more psychologically complex and ambiguous treatment. It is a horror film which is filtered through a master director’s singular artistic vision. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) his wife, (Shelley Duvall) and their young son Danny (Danny Lloyd) arrive at the Overlook Hotel, where Jack has been employed as caretaker during the closed winter season. Jack is a recovering alcoholic with ambitions to become a writer, seeing the period of isolation as a great opportunity to write his novel. But the Overlook holds dark secrets, exerting a malign influence on the increasingly disturbed father as Danny’s psychic powers – the “Shining” - begin to forewarn of murder.

The Shining is widely regarded as one of the most terrifying examples of the genre. The film conjures terror from the mundane, slowly building its sense of foreboding by rejecting the standard tropes of horror. One of the more chilling moments of the film is when Danny, tracked by a steadycam, pedals around the labyrinthine corridors on a tricycle. Similarly, the Overlook set, meticulously designed by Roy Walker and built at Elstree studios, helps to create a sense of unease, creating a palpable sense of claustrophobia, despite its vast size. The sound design and the soundtrack- a combination of modern classical and original composition by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkindcomplements the film perfectly. And then there’s Jack Nicholson, whose ad-libbed “Here’s Johnny” line, as his face sadistically presses through the axe-smashed bathroom door his wife has locked herself into, remains one of the most iconic moments in modern horror cinema.

Fans of The Shining should also see Room 237 (Rodney Ascher, 2012); a documentary which unravels the hidden messages and themes surrounding the film, including the preposterous theory that The Shining was Kubrick’s veiled admission that he was responsible for filming the “fake” Apollo 11 NASA moon landing!

the humans, seeking shelter from the zombie apocalypse, are seen raiding the stores of cash and products. The parallels between the zombies’ instinct for devouring flesh and the human instinct to “shop till you drop” is brilliantly conveyed.

When Romero died in 2017, the Hollywood Reporter justifiably hailed the director as the “father of the Zombie film”. With his zombie saga, Romero single-handedly created a cinematic horror sub-genre, setting the template for a distinctive type of grisly horror, infusing the schlock with an undercurrent of dark humour and social comment.

Hugely influential, Romero’s films have been imitated and parodied, but their visceral qualities and intelligence have rarely been matched.

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, 1999)

“In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland, while shooting a documentary…

A year later their footage was found.”

Made on a modest budget of $35,000 and backed by a huge internet publicity campaign which suggested that the events portrayed in the film were factual, Blair Witch popularised the found-footage genre of films. (The film which instigated the found-footage sub-genre was Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust made in 1980). The three actors playing the students (Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard) were scared shitless by the filmmaking method which involved them camping in the woods, being drip-fed aspects of the script and disturbed and terrified by the directors, adding a sense of verité to their performances.

Blair Witch is ultimately a tribute to the power of legend, the cinematic equivalent to sitting in the dark and telling ghost stories. It’s a simple premise and the result is a film which is genuinely terrifying.

TRAIN TO BUSAN

On her 17th birthday Mari Collingwood (Sandra Peabody) and her friend Phyllis Stone (Lucy Grantham) are due to attend a rock gig in the city. Taken captive by a gang of killers led by the escapee Krug Stillo (David A. Hess), they are humiliated, tortured, raped and murdered before Mari’s parents hatch a plot to exact revenge on the killers. The film’s tagline: “To avoid fainting, keep repeating it’s only a movie…” was lost on the critics and public as Last House on the Left provoked outrage upon its release. The film was banned in the cinema in the UK by the BBFC (Bollocks to James Ferman. Nobody has the right to tell me what films are suitable to see). Then, in the 1980s, it was listed by the Department of Public Prosecution during the ludicrous and entirely objectionable “video nasty” controversy.

With its plot lifted from Ingmar Bergman’s The Virgin Spring (1960), the film is not without its flaws. Several comical interludes of a pair of bungling coppers investigating Mari’s disappearance detract from the sinister tone of the film and you have to suspend your disbelief at the ridiculously hatched revenge plot (Hey, it’s only a movie). However, as an influential example of grindhouse exploitation, Last House on the Left’s reputation is well-deserved.

Wes Craven would go on to create the successful Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and the slasher deconstructionist Scream series.

More zombies, this time from South Korea. Train to Busan is a hugely entertaining, action-packed and emotional addition to the genre. Set predominantly on a train, where fund manager Seok-woo (Gong Yoo) is taking his young daughter, Su-an (Kim Su-an), to visit her mother on the child’s birthday, the film lays the foundation of its narrative before exploding into mayhem. A deer which has been killed by a truck in a chemical quarantine zone comes horribly back to life and a ‘blink-and-you’ll miss-it’ zombie attack on the train platform, briefly glimpsed through the window, give tantalising suggestions of the carnage to come.

As the scale of the flesh-eating apocalypse emerges, the film reveals its moral heart. Class- conflict, mistrust of authority, the importance of family, individualism versus moral and social obligation are all thematically explored. Train to Busan will have you on the edge of your seats and it’s moving melodramatic moments will make you cry.

Yeong Sang-ho’s riotous horror stands alongside Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later (2002) as one of the very best zombie films of the century so far. Why settle for Snakes on a Plane when you can have zombies on a train?

POLTERGEIST

Tarantino’s audacious debut feature, Reservoir Dogs, heralded the emergence of an astonishing new talent and reignited the debates surrounding on-screen violence and offensive language. The film, which details a failed jewellery store heist, prompted audience walkouts, including a mass walkout at Sitges Film Festival in 1992 led by horror director Wes Craven, prompting Tarantino to boast: “The fucking guy who did Last House on the Left walked out. My movie’s too tough for him?”.

Featuring an incredible ensemble cast (Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn, Steve Buscemi and err… Quentin Tarantino), the film introduced Tarantino’s trademark attributes: snappy dialogue, excessive violence, dark humour, intertextual references and non-linear plots. His films are also heavy on pop culture references and are notable for containing great rock and pop soundtracks. Reservoir Dogs includes a gut-wrenching cop torture sequence where Madsen’s “Mr Blonde” dances and sings along to Stealers Wheels’ ‘Stuck in the Middle with You’ before slicing off the unfortunate cop’s ear.

Although some critics have discerned a gradual deterioration in quality in Tarantino’s work and condemned his films’ self-indulgence, you have to admire the brio and sheer enthusiasm for cinema which shines through in all of Tarantino’s films.

The screenplay for Poltergeist was written by Steven Spielberg who was unable to direct the film owing to a clause in his Universal contract that prohibited him from working on any other film whilst making ET (1982). Spielberg admired Hooper’s low-budget horror classic, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), and hired him to direct, although many sources close to the film claim that Poltergeist was more Spielberg’s film than Hooper’s as Spielberg directed the bulk of the movie. A viewing of the film reveals Spielberg’s fingerprints, as Poltergeist is much closer to Spielberg’s familyfriendly oeuvre than Hooper’s “video nasty”. Poltergeist’s impressive special effects are comparable to Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), including an almost identical face melting sequence. There is also a fairy-tale quality to the film which contains a good versus evil/ light versus dark duality with the emphasis on family values suggesting Spielberg’s influence blunted the edges of Hooper’s more ambiguous sadism.

Poltergeist is a hugely enjoyable and suspenseful film with some genuine shocks including an incredibly impressive toy clown sequence. However, some hardcore horror fans may find it ultimately lacking in terror.

THE HULL ‘RAG ‘N’ BONE’ MAN WITH AN EYE FOR LOCAL LIFE. George Norris is invested with the spirit, heart, soul and honesty of Hessle Road. He was born down Linneaus Street and lived his early youth and teenage years based on Redbourne Street playing on the bombed building and later frequenting the local hostelries. He still lives in the area and can often be found wandering along Hessle Road with his camera documenting the places and people that will soon inevitably be lost to future generations.

“Hessle Road is home,” says George, as we sit in Raynors amongst effusive characters who all seem to know the photographer well. “I grow up here. I went to school here and worked here from being 15. The place and its people gave me my confidence.”

The enthusiasm for Hessle Road and its people is evident from the tales the former Performing Arts student tells, as well as from the way he tells them. He races through a catalogue of memories quickly switching from telling me about being a nipper and having difficulty keeping up with his fast-walking Mam, when she took him shopping on Hessle Road, to informing me of the local 4 ‘Rs’ which are reading, ‘riting , ‘rithmetic, and respect. He then says that he learned where everything was in Hull on a horse and cart travelling down all the streets, roads, and alleyways as a youth.

George explained what he does and why he does it…

“My photos aren’t about nostalgia. They’re about what’s happening today. It’s always nice to look back through rose tinted glasses at how things used to be, but there’s always been struggle and hardship in this area. It doesn’t change. It’s the working class struggle. So, I take pictures of working class people.

Not celebrity culture. There’s enough of that about.”

I took a slow stroll down Hessle Road, between Frankie’s and West Dock Avenue, before meeting my old friendturned social photographer, George Norris. It’s been a while since we last met. It has also been a while since I last re-acquainted myself with the sights, sounds and smells of the famous old road. It’s changed. Hessle Road has its well reported problems. Unsavoury types have moved in amongst those of a ‘salt of the earth’ disposition. It’s the modern world. Yet, what you get with Hessle Road is down-to-earth honesty. The pubs are open and are not called “bars”, the flower shop is a proper flower-shop selling its bunches and bouquets for every occasion, the dress shop I pass alters, mends and makes. Shops are just local stores and don’t pretend to be “mini-markets.” People look as you pass. You smile.

“I worked on the horse and cart from an early age,” he explains finally getting around to talking about his latest exhibition. “The show is basically a time-line of the tatters over the last 50 years. There’s a picture of me Dad as a young man, then there’s me as an 18 year old following in the family tradition, and the last bit is my images of the scrap dealers still out there now. Hull’s a relatively poor city so there’s still a lot of guys out there still recycling. The majority have white vans now but, especially, in summer, you’re still going to see the horse and carts coming around down your streets. A lot of my cousins are still tatters.”

George’s family feature heavily in the ‘Any Old Rag Bone’ exhibition. The Norris name is actually part of folklore in West Hull. Their story really begins with George’s grandad who brought horses back from France just after the second World War. “There weren’t any horses in Hull, then,” explains George, “My grandad just supplied the demand selling horses to the docks, to solicitors, to the fruit trade. Later all his six sons went out on the horse and cart because my grandma didn’t want them to go to sea. My Dad is 78 now and still breeds horses. He and my family have always recycled.

She’d go to William Booth House once a week and buy the suits of old boys who had died. It’s a bit sad and morbid but there were some brilliant suits.”

The snapper, renowned for being stylish, started taking photography seriously after his mother died around ten years ago. “I was sorting out her things and found all these amazing pictures of my family and our heritage.

It inspired me to collect photographs from other family members and the Hull Daily Mail. They had photographs of the Horse Wash, Hull Fair, Dairycoates Horse Fair and the abattoir. My relations are in all of those pictures because the whole family was centred around horses.”

The early pictures in the exhibition, showing George as a skinny youth, were taken by Russell Boyce who became a friend and inspiration. Boyce now works for Reuters but thirty years ago he was doing a degree at Hull College photographing Raynors, Blind Institute, Hull Dogs Home, and Candy De Barry the drag artist. “He followed me and Glenn Collins around on the horse and cart” states George. “It was through looking at my Mams pictures and Russell Boyce’s photographs that I thought I need to document the City as it is today, myself.”

It was a good time to begin compiling his photographic explorations. After curating an exhibition of portraits featuring Hull and its characters and then one about street-culture (for Hull’s brilliant “Museum of Club Culture”) based on a friend’s pictures taken back in the day at clubs such as Silhouette and Welly, George was, therefore, the right person in the right place, at the right time, when City of Culture arrived. The James Reckitt Trust commissioned a large exhibition of his work in January 2017 and he supplied Sean McAllister with a lot of character studies for the opening City of Culture event. “Seeing massive images of friends, family and acquaintances projected onto City Hall and Ferens. I was so proud,” beams the former Chiltern Street, Francis Askew and Riley High School pupil. (He should have been projected on there himself, as well, but I think Sean forgot to include him, ha ha! –Ed.)

opinions. “Bands like the Specials had songs that I could relate to in the Thatcherist world I lived in. They politicised me. Everything they sang about highlighted the problems we were facing. The Clash were the same.”

Luckily Hull and the surrounding area played host to all the top Ska, New-Wave and post-punk bands of the late 70s / early 80s period. A lot of people will recall George watching bands on Mondays and Thursdays at Welly Club. Although obviously underage, through a mixture of charm and guile (that he obviously still retains,) the boy George even got past the redoubtable Mrs Wilson!

He was also regularly found down Cleveland Street on a Friday and Saturday nights. “Spiders was a great place for individuals. It was cheap to get in, cheap drinks, and really friendly. There was never any trouble. I met a lot of my lifelong friends in there.”

‘Any Old Rag Bone’ runs until June 7th at the Streetlife Museum. It is a definitive depiction of local scrap traders and their way of life. “The tatters were the first recyclers.” George explains, “Everyone goes on about Green energy and being environmentally friendly these days, but Tatters were the real originals. They should get paid for what they do then you wouldn’t get all this fly-tipping.”

The photographer is loquacious and friendly but also erudite and informed in his views. He becomes animated when we discuss education; “School was rubbish.”

He states, defiantly, “It was music that educated me and engaged me with life.” Too young for Punk’s first furious flush it was 2-Tone that fired his passion and

CITY’S CROWDS ARE DWINDLING, BUT THERE’S 40,000 OF US WAITING IN THE WINGS! Hull City have achieved their number one objective when the season kicked off last August and that was to reach 50 points which will keep us in the Championship for another season. There was a time when that seemed highly unlikely when we sank to the very foot of the table during Autumn. But a remarkable unbeaten run leading into the Festive Season and continuing into the New Year saw expectations raised to unrealistic heights and finally doused when the January transfer window slammed shut. Typical of City our luck ran out at the very height of our form when we lost both regular centre halves at the same time to injury, not helped at all by having the second choice centre halves also laid up unavailable. The timing could not have been any worse for us.

Normally a club enjoying a winning run like we were and sniffing the Play-Off places would have immediately used the opportunity of the transfer window to strengthen the squad and keep the momentum going especially when key players were out injured.

But there was no will at City to do so and the wind was taken out of our promotion sails with the inactivity in the transfer market just when we needed it most.

I believe the players had been identified to bring in too, the loan signing of Mark Pugh is testimony to that, but we could not get those signings needed over the line, a familiar story with City in recent years. So the opportunity was lost. I’ve been saying all season that on their day our first eleven are more than a match for anyone. The way we demolished Leeds who were top of the table and flying in their own backyard over Christmas showed the potential of Adkins strongest team.

Nigel Adkins has been remarkable so far this season in the face of adversity. He has talked the club up every week against a background of simmering anarchy all around him. Not only has he managed the team, he has also acted as the club spokesman and publicist. A role the club owners have neglected and they also choose to operate without a CEO which gives the club the impression of drifting along like a ship without a rudder.

On the very rare occasions that Ehab does speak, no-one believes a word he says, his words are as empty as the ground is on a match day. We’ve heard it all before, it means nothing and leaves supporters feeling short changed. He has lost the plot as well as more than half our support and I cannot, for one moment, think that Adkins doesn’t think the same. He too must have moments

when he wishes he was at a club who valued him more ? He has done himself no harm at all in the way he has handled a difficult situation at City and other clubs will not have failed to take note.

For the life of me I cannot see any clamour to join the club membership scheme for the new season, more likely just a deluge of cancellations as this season limps to a close. Only the very diehards will remain (of which I am one) and we are having our patience truly tested as the reality of our worth to the club sinks in.

Does anyone out there seriously believe it is our club anymore ?

The quality we have in the squad will be stripped bare in the summer, everyone knows who will be the prize assets, the most sought after, the keenest to get away and the only questions remaining are for how much, where to and when ? The club will be worth considerably less than it was this time last year and we have no parachute payments to fall back on and the club now has to be self-funding. Now is the time for him to sell.

We really have gone full circle, back to the very barren days of Boothferry Park under this present regime. Only the stadium is different but the problems remain the same, a lack of investment, a lack of will and a lack of love and respect for the old club. It hurts all the more because it could have all been so different.

We could have had it all … but instead it’s been squandered away with nothing to show for our four most successful seasons in our history with an F.A Cup Final appearance and three promotions to the richest football league in the World.

We lived the dream but now it’s all been taken away.

What a wasted opportunity for Hull City and the city of Hull.

As I said earlier in the magazine, due to our projects with St. Mary’s College we’ve discovered some new up-and-coming young writers in Hull. This is one of them and he’s a big Rugby League fan. Welcome to Tenfootcity Bailey….

IN HULL, IS IT RUGBY OR RELIGION?

Hull Kingston Rovers. Hull FC. Myton Warriors. Hull Dockers. Three Tuns (and yes, there’s a third spelling of the word Tonne for you!)

Skirlaugh, West Hull and East Hull. Rugby in this city is like Islam in Mecca….. It’s Holy in Hull.

Hull Kingston Rovers (The Robins) and Hull F.C (The Airlie Birds/Old faithful) were formed 17 years apart, Hull FC in 1865 then Rovers in 1882 and have co-existed in the same City ever since. Nowadays, Rovers are synonymous with the East side of Hull and FC with the West, but few know the horrible truth. Hull K.R. were formed in the West, with Hull FC in the East! ( Blasphemy I know!) Hull FC have 6 league titles and 5 Challenge cups Whereas Rovers have 5 league titles and a sole Challenge cup ( Beating Hull FC funnily enough! 10 – 5. No one ever forgets that one! ) But, does all this history Translate well into today’s game? Well...No. The Airlie birds have had a lot more Success in recent years, appearing in 5 Challenge cup finals from 2005, winning 3. As well as a solitary Grand Final appearance in 2006. Whilst the Robins had their arses firmly handed to them on a silver platter in 2015, losing to Leeds 50-0 in the Challenge cup final. Taxi for Rovers anyone?

Anyway, enough of this history lesson. Why should YOU go and experience Rugby League in Hull for yourself? Well, Rugby in Hull...it’s a way of life. Like I said, it’s a religion to us Cod-Heads, myself included.

This year’s super league season started off with a cracker.

Round 1 Derbies? I DON’T MIND IF I FUCKING DO! Craven Park was the setting. With the backdrop of a new attendance record, Rovers went into this opener as favourites. However, FC took hope into the game having only once been beaten at Craven Park in 7 years. Rover’s side was stocked full of new fresh faces, such as Josh Drinkwater, Mitch Garbutt and Jimmy Keinhorst. Whilst Hull had Matty Dawson-Jones Debuting on the wing. Hull raced into a 0-12 lead with tries from Sika Manu and Dawson-Jones. The black and white dominance after this however came to an end, with Rovers pegging Hull through tries from Joel Tomkins and Mitch Garbutt. Rovers eventually went into the break with a deserved 14-12 lead thanks to a Drinkwater Penalty. This is how it

stayed until a Hull FC attack which culminated in all I can say as a bloody superb Marc Sneeyd pass which lead to a Rampaging finish by Bureta Faraimo, leaving Danny McGuire in a heap on the floor. 14-16. Hull looked to have ended their dreadful run of Results with Rovers deep in their own territory with just a minute left on the clock. A great last set from Rovers saw George Lawler tackled on the penultimate tackle on the 30. Up steps Josh Drinkwater with a towering bomb, batted down by Ben Crooks to Danny Addy, through McGuire and (write your name into Hull K.R. folklore!...), Jimmy Keinhorst. Rovers win it 18-16 in the last few seconds. An incredible start to the season.

For a neutral (if there is any in Hull?) what does a victory in the derby mean? Well, to put it simply, Bragging Rights. It gives you the right to rag the absolute living shit out of your mates who support the enemy. It’s this unpredictability that makes RUGBY LEAGUE the spectacle it is, especially the Hull Derby.

A spectacle that should be witnessed by any, and every, sports fan, whether that be Equestrian or Rugby league. ( How is Equestrian in the Olympics anyway, but Rugby League isn’t?

It’s just horse dancing for fucks sake!)

Both Clubs Have great young players coming through their ranks, with Rovers boasting what could be a very deadly future backline with Will Dagger, Will Oakes and Elliot Wallis.

As well as England international Robbie Mulhern and George Lawler. Hull On the other hand have exciting Centre Cameron Scott, prop Masi Matongo and Christ… Jake Connor is only 24. As I write both clubs are just above halfway in the table.

Rugby in the city looks to be on the rise once again, with great crowds turning out.

You really should go and experience it.

A Fiver of that is sent to Pauline Town who runs The Station Hotel in Ashton-under-Lyne. (Manchester.) Pauline’s Pub is more like a drop-in centre, than anything else, these days. Aside from a pint, you can leave there with an emergency food parcel, a change of clothes, some dry socks, a tent or sleeping bag, a packed lunch, some new second-hand shoes; you can leave there having had a hot drink, some advice on benefits, some help finding emergency accommodation, or simply just a friendly chat and a hug from someone who cares about you. We ALL do this as working-class people whenever we can and everything is donated by fellow working-class people to help those who need it. This is grassroots Solidarity Pauline is ‘We Shall Overcome’ personified. Every day she makes up to 60 packed lunches for those sleeping rough in the town, and she knows them all by name. She has got more than 250 people off the streets and into a new home for a fresh start, and she can do that because countless musicians, poets, organisers and activists are there when she needs them, raising money or knocking on doors until they are answered. I am proud to help with this. A fiver might not seem like much, but I play a LOT of gigs, sell quite a few CD’s and so it all adds up. Here’s Pauline explaining it all: “A fiver pays for fresh fruit for 50 packed lunches, making sure that our homeless men and women are getting a healthy meal... or it buys 10 tins of meatballs or hotdogs, and they go into our family food parcels feeding children who are living in families struggling in poverty... or it buys enough dog food for our homeless pooches for a week... or it buys a fiver of leccy for a disabled man who is having to choose to heat or eat... or it nearly buys a day saver ticket for a young man with mental health issues facing a 14 mile walk to the assessment centre for a medical review just to get his benefits (when the Tory government knows there’s no real change to their circumstances anyway – Ed) .....or this week it was handed to a young woman who HAS had her benefits delayed due to a change of circumstances - that change was the death of her baby and that fiver meant she could buy bread, butter and milk to go with the food parcel we made up for her. That’s what a fiver can do and it matters even more because it gives someone, who had nowhere else to turn, a helping hand given with a big hug..... it means someone who was facing a kicking from life, on their own, knows that they are NOT alone and that we actually care.”

While the country tears itself apart over Brexit, some of us are preparing for the aftermath in much the same way we have spent the last six years, namely mopping up after institutionalised evil created and perpetuated by this Tory Government. The last nine years have seen ideological assaults on our communities which have targeted those least able to fight back, and in this way the poorest and most vulnerable of us have literally been murdered by the state.

The way I see it you have two choices, you either behave like they want you to behave, blame who they want you to blame, and wallow in your own sense of powerlessness until you are consumed by anger, bitterness and alienation; … or you can try to do something about it, no matter how small.

My small way is through those CD’s and my songs. Pauline’s is through turning her pub into a community hub, and yours could be whatever the hell you like. Fighting back does not mean bricks and bottles, it means drawing a line in the sand and refusing to be part of the problem. The world has plenty of us, but the voices we are forced to listen to, those media commentators and career politicians, manipulative media and sensationalist crass T.V. documentaries…. manage to persuade us otherwise in order to encourage Working Class people to hate each other and live as selfishly as the rich elite.

We are better than them. We look out for each other in thousands of tiny ways.

There are millions of acts of everyday Solidarity that disprove what our ‘betters’ would like to force you to believe.

We are an unstoppable force for good in the world if only we would ALL wake up and realise it.

POST-BREXIT, … THIS ISLAND is going to need our unity, our compassion and our hope more than ever.

The politics of despair has had its time. We need to consign it to the dustbin of history where it belongs.

We are better than this as Working-Class people.

Now let’s prove it.

‘The Hired Man’ - Hull Truck 23 May - 15 June.

Sit yourself in one of Hull’s Truck’s cozy chairs and prepare to meet The Hired Man. His story, and that of his family make for a unrelenting, but ultimately compelling tale.

It covers a long period. The years between the 1890s and the 1920s. So, get yourself comfy in a seat because you won’t want to move away from this adaption of Melvyn Braggs best-selling book of interwoven lives. It focuses on John Tallentire a farmer and then coal miner and features his family, his unfaithful wife, their children and their losses, set against English traditions such as whippet racing, hunting, and drunkenness. If this sounds vaguely familiar then you’re probably a fan of D H Lawrence.

The Hired Man is similar in that there’s passions a-plenty, sexual lust, blood-lust, brutality, resilience and redemption, all at a time when the emergence of heavy industry demanded the end of traditional rural life.

Meanwhile, the approach of war darkened everyone’s outlook.

This rather bleak-sounding synopsis is enlivened in performance by the songs and music of Howard Goodall the award winning composer of the hit West End show ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and TV series such as Red Dwarf, Blackadder, and Vicar of Dibley and if you are not moved by the emotionally charged ‘Farewell Song’ performed by the cast at the end of this production, well you just don’t deserve the comfy seat you’ll have sat in for the last 2 hours. NOEL GALLAGHER - HULL BONUS ARENA – 11th MAY Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will visit the Bonus Arena in Hull this May. One of the greatest songwriters of his generation, Noel is heading out to Japan and South Korea shortly… and Hull’s Bonus Arena is proud to say that it is the only English date, outside of London, before this jaunt. It’s a chance for fans to catch Noel’s new 11-piece line up in more intimate surroundings, when new material, currently being recorded, is likely to get an airing. Noel will be supported by former Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes. As a founding member of Oasis, Noel needs no introduction. The band’s first two albums – ‘Definitely Maybe’ and ‘What’s The Story Morning Glory’ are regarded as two of the greatest English pop-albums ever released, whilst the band’s third album ‘Be Here Now’ remains the fastest -selling album in UK history despite it being released back in 1997. As a solo artist Noel has released three albums with his High Flying Birds, releasing singles such as ‘In The Heat of the Moment’ and ‘AKA…What A Life’. OLLY MURS - BONUS ARENA. 21st May Pop superstar OLLY MURS is to bring his massive UK arena tour to Hull this Spring, on Tuesady 21st May. After finishing second in the X-Factor in 2009, Olly Murs has shot to fame with a string of hit singles, huge selling albums and also as a general TV personality. Olly , who has been nominated for six BRIT Awards and two Ivor Novello awards – is known for the hits ‘Heart Skips A Beat’, ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ and the new single ‘Moves’ which features guest vocals from Snoop Dogg, no less.

The tour will also be visiting the likes of Manchester Arena, The O2 Arena in London and first direct arena in Leeds and is a huge coup for Hull’s newest entertainment venue.

Olly’s show at the Bonus Arena is the latest huge name to be announced for the venue. Since opening at the end of August, the 3,500-capacity arena has announced names such as Castfish and the Bottlemen, Michael Ball, indie legends James, George Ezra and Boyzone. The show at the Bonus Arena is open-age but anyone under the age of 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

Turn and Face the Strange is the powerful multi-media show telling the story of Hull Lad Mick Ronson who played alongside David Bowie as one of the Spiders from Mars, and became a world-famous musician, arranger and album producer. The show was originally commissioned as part of Hull’s City of Culture year playing to sell-out audiences at the Freedom Centre in August 2017, followed by a further sellout run at Hull Truck. In August a specially adapted version of the cult show opened the new Spiders from Mars stage at the annual Sesh Festival wowing an audience of thousands. It’s now back at Hull Truck this Spring for two weeks. Written

by Garry Burnett and ‘Made in Hull’ writer Rupert Creed, the show features a vivid stage design by Ed Ullyart, powerful film content by Anna Bean, and stunning lighting by Jason Addison. The stellar line-up of talent includes rock musicians who played with Mick Ronson and David Bowie, with Keith ‘Ched’ Cheesman (The Rats) John Cambridge (The Rats & The Hype), John Bentley (Squeeze), alongside local lads Kristian Eastwood, Bobby Joyce, Rachael Jarvis & Phil Keech. With a string quartet of classically trained young musicians ‘Turn and Face the Strange’ tells the real story of the Man Who Fell To Earth and Changed the Music World.

The Last Word.

Yeah, like I’ve said in a couple of other places in this issue, with Steve (the Designer) and myself, doing projects with St. Mary’s College Media Depeartment, we’ve discovered a few new young up-and-coming writers from Hull and this is the second of them in this issue, welcome to Tenfootcity, Charlie…

THE RISE OF THE ‘FEMINAZIS’? OR NOT REALLY?

So, here we are in the year 2019, 100 years since the franchise was extended to allow women the right to vote; a major milestone that would go on to stand as a factor in completely revolutionising the role of women within society. Since then women have gone on to make massive contributions to the advancement of society with incredible technological, medical and philosophical advancements, with breakthroughs still continuing to be made every single day and women standing in some of the most influential positions around the world.

Yeah, amazing, right? Well, if this is the case- why is feminism still perceived as some sort of a joke in some quarters?

In light of the empowering campaigns such as; #MeToo and #TimesUp, that came as a result of recent patriarchal exploitation scandals, surely it should be time to support the women that are subjected to such male-instigated abuse and exploitation and also those who are afraid to speak out in fear of prejudice - or even being, in some strange way, to ‘blame’? Perhaps their clothing was a total giveaway, they wanted to be inappropriately touched, or they gave subtle messages to be made a move on? Seriously, come on, NO MEANS NO, regardless of any factor or any other pathetic male excuse.

This isn’t Charlie herself btw, Ha ha!

Moreover, why is it that people, including one of the world’s most influential leaders (and biggest wankers), otherwise known as ‘President’ Trump, doesn’t class himself as a feminist- instead is “for men…and everyone else”- yeah, I’m calling Bull-Shit on it all. Is it because all feminists are hairy-legged, eco-freako, vegan man-haters, called “FemiNazis? Or is it the fact that these misconceptions of what it truly means to class yourself as a ‘feminist’ clouds judgements, making people embarrassed to even utter the word because of those ridiculous stereotypes, which we all know are not true?

Feminism, according to the Oxford dictionary is; “The advocacy of women’s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.”

So, there we have it, it’s as simple as that, being a feminist simply means wanting equal rights for both sexes, not the eradication of a whole opposite gender just on the grounds of wanting equal pay!

Well, while we’re on the subject of equal pay, what’s that all about anyway? Why is it that one gender can be paid so much more, for doing the exact same job? The mind boggles that we even have to consider this point in our “modern” world, because it clearly is not right, yet sadly is still an issue so prevalent within society, with one gender being considered as “superior” to the other.

Thinking about feminism closer to home, I am proud to say that I am a woman from Hull- home to the “Headscarf Revolutionaries”; Lillian Bilocca, Yvonne Blenkinsop, Christine Jenson, Mary Denness and the thousands of strong-willed women that campaigned for improved safety on fishing fleets to prevent future disasters, just like those of the triple trawler tragedies that devastatingly struck Hull in the year of 1968. Lillian Billoca, dubbed as ‘Big Lil’ led a Hull Women’s movement and gathered 10,000 signatures for a petition to strengthen safety legislation, going to extreme lengths to make sure this was to happen. She even very nearly threw herself in front of a moving trawler after finding out that the ship did not have a radio operator on board, making it extremely dangerous for all the crew on board who would not have been able to signal for help if coming across any danger at sea. These women fought tirelessly for what was right in a time which was very much male-orientated, and many went against the orders of their husbands, who were embarrassed their wives were speaking out for fear of making a ‘spectacle’ of themselves.

I am proud to be from Hull.

I am proud to be a woman.

I am proud of what my fellow females have achieved and will continue to achieve, continuously making those necessary steps in order to strive for that total equality, which we are entitled to.

I am proud to be a feminist… are you?
