We have existed in Hull for 13 years now and this is issue 52. (Consistent eh?) Usual issues are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Christmas/New Year.

This magazine exists because “WEAREHULL.”A unique, inspiring, challenging City that stands alone, like a light at the end of a tunnel on the edge of the U.K. It’s at the terminus of a long dark corridor that leads you away from the rest of that strange and disturbing world out there, into our enclave of true reality called HULL! place that harbours our special lifestyle, distinctive accent and our unique ‘on the edge’ sense of humour. The aim of this magazine is to reflect all of the above and to highlight and encourage all of the vibrancy and creativity that exists herein. In other words… you read Tenfootcity and you’re in tune with our magical part of the world. Our Editorial policy is one of total Social-Inclusion, non-discrimination, bloody (but peaceful) revolution and Freedom of Speech – but most of all, having a laugh! Love us.

The good news is we are planning for the future and so we’ve already introduced a selection of new young blood with a ‘Hull in their Hearts’, so we’re obviously planning in the right direction. The thing is, we’ve been doing this magazine for over 13 years now and we’re all getting older (of course) so if there’s anyone out there who thinks they understand Tenfootcity (like our 3 new young contributors seem to do) please get in touch cos we’re really gonna need a new team to run it in the next couple of years.

Tenfootcity is too important to this City now, so we want to make sure we keep its legacy alive.

We were going to have more promotion in this issue for PRIDE, but we didn’t make it in time, but what a FANTASTIC event it was anyway, which is why we still decided to give this Summer issue a PRIDE & FREEDOM cover, to celebrate the great Love, Diversity and Open-Mindedness of the great people of Hull. We’re proud of you all!

Great things are happening in Hull as usual, because, following Pride and the Maritime/Folk Festival, we now have the incredible HUMBER STREET SESH and the FREEDOM FESTIVAL coming up, which are both promoted in this issue of course. Hull is still fantastic and our people are still great, so go forth and enjoy yourselves, but please remember to look out for those around us, who may not be as fortunate as you, and may still need your help or support. That’s the sort of people we are in Hull, so please don’t ever forget about that!

Cultur’Ull: Humber Street Sesh

The city’s biggest and best emerging music & arts festival, Humber Street Sesh, returns for its eighth year on Hull‘s Marina on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd August.

When you walk around the Sesh site, just the same as Hull PRIDE and the Freedom Festival,you notice that just about everyone is smiling and feeling great in an atmosphere of HULL UNITY - and Tenfootcity just LOVES it! The founder of the festival Mark Page explains their progress…

“To get to 8 years of this festival is some achievement and we thank everyone who has helped us get here. What we mustn’t do is get complacent and take it for granted, it’s a huge event for Hull, but one that comes at a huge price. It needs everyone’s support year- on-year to make it sustainable and enjoyable, from the civic and business community, to all the creatives and the public in the city. We’re all in this together!

The festival provides a huge platform for so many in the city, and brings everyone together for one magical weekend on an iconic site. It boosts the economy and promotes the city beyond the bridge, and gives so much confidence to the many that perform at the festival. We’ve received some good support again this year, and we’re aiming to improve on what was arguably our best festival yet in 2018. Both sides of the marina will be staging the event again, with Friday night being held solely on the west of the marina courtesy of the support of the Spencer Group, and the Saturday will be hosted across both east and west sides.

The Friday, as requested by many, sees our first foray in bringing some major emerging names to the festival with The Hunna headlining the main stage, alongside the superb Yonaka, and last year’s headliners, King No One, who are graciously opening up for us. With over 130 million Spotify plays and 300k facebook followers between them, we’re expecting something quite special on Humber Quays. Still on the Friday, in the ‘scrubland’ we’re delighted to have Back To Ours onboard with us, courtesy of the Youth Art Takeover and the Goodwin Centre. Back To Ours have been responsible for some pretty incredible events in the most unsuspecting places over the last two years including the likes of Ash and Black Grape playing in the North Point Shopping Centre on Bransholme! Through their support, we’re bringing the Big Top back for 2019 and filling it with some of the very best emerging bands in the UK right now, including a joint headline spot which features the all-conquering Blinders and Hull’s very own LIFE. Also on the Friday, we see the return of the euphoric Funkywormhole Soundsystem, and the Pride In Hull Takeover of the huge Silent Disco, which have both been supported by the Hull Business Angels. Plus the sublime Speak Easy night will be curating a pretty special line up of homegrown talent within the three Yurts. We listen each year to what people say, and it was clear that we needed to up the ante with acts and bring some fresh names to the party.

For 2019, we’ve emptied our pockets to bring you some of the biggest emerging acts in the UK. For us to take it to even greater heights in the future we need to make the Friday work, so please, one and all, make the effort to support us.

Cultur’Ull: Humber Street Sesh

As for Saturday, history tells us that the intensity of the programme across both sides of the marina will ensure a healthy crowd and an amazing event. Having improved our bars and toilets in 2018, we aim to step it up again this year.

People will see a huge improvement in this area, as we have been giving the full support of Central Fusion, who are a major festival bar company that service some of the biggest festivals in the UK and Europe and we’ve pulled out all the stops to put together an incredible line up of regional and emerging talent from across the UK. Festival Headliners this year are local Indie favourites, The Hubbards. Originally from Hull, but now spread across the country due to work commitments, The Hubbards, are so deserving of this status due to their impressive portfolio of material. Not to mention the long list of gigs, festivals and support slots they’ve achieved over this time. Take five minutes on Youtube and enjoy some of the best music videos to come out of Hull in years. Also on the University of Hull Main stage, we’re delighted to have Leeds favourites, Marsicans on the bill as main support, alongside Sheffield’s garage rock outfit Sheafs, the exceptional Calva Louise and Leeds sensation Tallsaint. There’s some great local names on the main stage too, with rock gods, Of Allies, sharing it with Lumer, Three Day Millionaires, The Froot and Trueman, whilst the honour of opening up the stage goes to the HERO Sessions Orchestra (Hull Electro Resonance Orchestra) courtesy of Hull Music and Hull Youth and funded by the Arts Council, featuring various young musicians and luminaries from the local music scene. But of course that’s just one stage amongst many on offer. The best way to find out what’s planned is to check out the website stage pages or take a look on all our social media.

Some of the big highlights for us will be seeing Hull’s Grime guru, Cheidu Oraka headline the Back To Ours Big Top on the Saturday, whilst the stunning Amy May Ellis and Fiona Lee are absolute must sees in the Speak Easy Yurt. We’re also looking forward to seeing Residents Association DJ’s in the Humber Fruit-brokers warehouse on Humber Street this year, whilst the beautiful Sessions by The Sea host the

Acoustic Stage for the first time on the Pier by Minerva. The iconic Dead Bod Stage is back courtesy of the support of Hull Trains, as is the Rock Stage and without giving too much away, we see the return of the much loved Strummerville stage where BDRMM are headlining alongside Cannibal Animal in a much missed venue.

We’re honoured, as always, to have the BBC Introducing team back with us this year and their chosen line-up covers all bases with the South bank massive being represented with indie rock gods, Mint, headlining. Another shout on that stage will be most definitely Newmeds and the always impressive Polo, and we can’t wait to see what Blacky from Illicit does with his half hour set – expect some heavy bass and plenty of two step headshaking. And finally after much debate, the Soul Powered crew are back on the Stage@ thedock amphitheatre with a Hip-Hop Block Party featuring MC’s, Breakdancers, Graffiti Artist and Scratch DJ’s. There’s also the highly anticipated Beatsbus Orchestra making their debut at Sesh this year.

All in, alongside an abundance of Art, Humber Street Sesh is back for 2019, and with your support, it aims to be our very best yet. To grab a wristband, pop along to one of the city’s great independent shops (all listed on the website) or go online and get one from Hullboxoffice. You can even pay on the door at a price. Wristbands are at £15 per day this year, a slight increase on last year to help us cover the cost of staging such a grand event for Hull. Weekend Tickets which gets you in on both days are at £25. Those with Tickets can exchange for wristbands at a Trinity live gig over the next few weeks, or exchange on the day.

Cultur’Ull: Freedom Festival

A celebration of humanity, powered by people!

This summer, Hull’s annual Freedom Festival will use the city as its stage once again, in a way it has never done before.

From Wednesday 28 August, Hull will see artists from across the world converge in the city to amaze, challenge and mystify audiences with jaw-dropping circus, weird and wonderful street theatre, thought-provoking performances (and talks), music from all over the world, and mischievous projects that engage all ages. However, a different layer has been added to this year’s festival, offering a new rhythm for the weekend.

With an expanded indoor programme following on from the huge success and feedback from last year’s ticketed programme of events, audiences will be able to begin their Freedom journey sooner, with additional shows starting earlier in the week to allow audiences greater time and opportunity to see extraordinary performances by awardwinning international artists, then spend the weekend enjoying the incredible programme of free performances.

While the vast majority of Freedom Festival is free, this year there will be five indoor ticketed shows: the breathtaking Humans by Circa; the unique UduL by Los Galindos; the hilarious Un Poyo Rojo; Fidelis Fortibus by award-winning Circus Ronaldo, which sees the return of Danny Ronaldo to Hull; and East, an ambitious new project by Martin and Eliza Carthy, performed at Hull Minster.

With the festival beginning on Wednesday 28 August, audiences will have a greater chance to see these worldclass shows, with both intimate moments and epic performances.

Freedom Festival Friday will see more happening during the afternoon in the lead up to the evening’s performance, when the party will really get started, as French street art titans Générik Vapeur bring their legendary show Bivouac to Hull city centre, with a loud and punky performance on Friday night. Watch in awe as blue men and women and a cast of community participants take over the streets with a pyrotechnic extravaganza, transporting the city into a daydream.

The city centre will be alive once again throughout the weekend, with multiple commissions and events that will explore themes relating to human rights as Freedom Festival 2019 affirms its position as one of the UK’s and Europe’s finest and most distinctive arts festivals.

Expect non-stop dancing and a whole load of wild energy and soul power as the music stage returns to Zebedees Yard, whilst on the Sunday, Hull’s International Carnival takes over the city, celebrating the communities of Hull and the joyfulness they create.

BEATS BUS BUILDS ITS RHYTHM It’s been a great pleasure for me to head back to Hull to support Steve Arnott, the subject and real hero of my film, ‘A Northern Soul’ who is now taking his dream to the next level.

With a second Beats Bus now on the road, he is fronting a Home-Office initiative to tackle the rising problem of knife crime in the region. Getting a significant chunk of the 300k of funding he, and his team, will be going into over 50 schools talking to the kids about the dangers and showing them their super-duper new interactive “No Knife” rap video – and well supported by Dave O’Kwesia from Urban Trendz/Full Flava. They’ve had amazing media coverage on all networks and have been beamed live from their events. What a triumph for that humble warehouse-worker with a dream that no one took seriously before he proved himself in the film and before he made the scary, but giant leap, of walking away from them (dark satanic) factory gates!

The Heritage of Hull at OFF THE ROAD Live Lounge What do we really know about Hull?

Do we notice our heritage? Local Author and Historian David Zander wants to open your eyes, or at least re-kindle some memories. He will be giving a series of talks on Hull, its buildings and some of its weird and wonderful characters throughout the years, using various props including slideshows, photo-prints and Q + A Sessions with you, the audience! Find out more about your past while sampling some damned fine beverages at the same time, courtesy of the lovely Jayney at the Off The Road Live Lounge, Princess Ave. These nights are happening on 6th August, 1st October and 3rd December, (7:30pm start) ….but there are loads of other great nights that you ought to support at Off The Road, including Music gigs, Comedy, Poetry and other performances, plus some great down-to-earth food and good beer. Get yerself in there for one of their nights!

‘HUMANS’ BODY TALK! Acrobats? Stunt Artists? Contemporary Dancers?

Labels aren’t worth a pin when describing the group of ten performers involved in the jaw-dropping, breath-taking, heart-pounding exposition of strength, physical self-awareness and group trust that propels the narrative of ‘Humans’ by modern circus company Circa.

The Performances, in a cleared area purged of props, expose the full vulnerability, but durable virtuosity of the human form and their athleticism.

THE PURPLE ROBOT INVADED TENFOOTCITY! Yeah, it was quite a strange experience. We recently received a mysterious padded envelope at Tenfootcity Towers, which we were quite worried about actually, cos obviously loads of local nutters want to kill ‘Commies’ like us. We have to be careful, so we took it to a local field to open it carefully and, imagine our surprise, when this lovely little cute Robot dropped out!

It didn’t have any information with it. Nothing. Just a label around its neck saying ‘Purple Robot’ and a key to wind it up. It actually walked across the worktop in our canteen and we all loved it. We were all really intrigued by it. We didn’t have a clue what it meant and why we were chosen to receive it.

Sadly, just before going to print we found out what it really meant, which spoilt our wonderment somewhat! But happily it was all for a very good reason. You will see the publicity elsewhere in this issue, which we received right at the last minute, which may give you more information. Just have to say what a fantastic and innovative piece of marketing that was, that really got us thinking. The initials are the same as one of our regulars in these pages…. So that may give you a clue.

THE PURPLE ROBOT is coming but we think he (or She?) is a very friendly thing, so don’t worry.

‘No More Separation’ – by Richard Lees “Over the brutal separation walls and sniper towers, a boy’s kite flies free, carrying the hopes of a people dispossessed, denied freedom and equality, by a repressive apartheid regime.”

(And it’s NOT “anti-semitic” to express that fact btw! – Ed.) It started with the young people’s book that originally related the above narrative. This was no ordinary kids story. ‘Flying Home’ is a book by young people at Laiee Centre, a creative and cultural children’s centre in Aida Refugee Camp., Bethlehem.

When Richard Lees, an artist from Hull, learned about the book he wanted to take the story further Expressing the artists solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggles ‘No More Separation’ is a series of his Lino prints taking the kite further into worlds, real and imagined, of dreams, grief and defiance.

Original Lino prints can be purchased from the HIP Gallery shop: Proceeds will be donated to Palestinian Refugee charities.

MOTOR-BIKERS, PLEASE GATHER! The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride For Charity….

Dapper local Bikers Join 100,000+ Worldwide in a mass ride from Barton to Hull on Sunday September 29th.

Local motor cyclists are set to take part in a charity ride from Barton to Hull on Sunday 29th September, to raise funds for prostate cancer research and also men’s mental health issues.

The idea began in Australia in 2012, with 2,500 riders in 64 cities. Last year 115,000 riders took part in 648 cities in 101 countries, raising awareness of men’s issues.

Last year our 140 local riders raised £10,321 on the first Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in our Humber area. The route begins at the Old Tile Works in Barton (10.30am), then crosses the Humber Bridge into Hull and ends in Victoria Square, around noon. The Barton to Hull ride is being organised by Hull Rotary Club, and is open to riders of Cafe’ Racers, Bobbers, Classics, Trackers, Scramblers, Old School Choppers, Modern Classics, Sidecars, Classic Scooters and Brat-Styled motorcycles.

Riders (male or female) are encouraged to dress up in a “dapper style.” To date the ride has raised around £10,000,000 worldwide, (Yes, that’s 10 Million!) over 7years, and the global target for this year is 4 and half million in total! So, if you’re a biker, you’ll be contributing to a great cause by getting involved and having a lovely mass-group ride at the same time!

ODDITORIUM - Intriguing little shop in the Indoor Trinity Market….

You all need to check out the Trinity Market in general really because, as well as all of the tasty places in the food court, (see pages 58 & 59 in this very magazine) you’ll also find lots of interesting little Independent Market traders.

One of these that really caught our eye because of the array of interesting pieces was ‘Odditorium’ and the owner Wayne described it thus: “We do antiques, collectables, eye-catching pieces, musical items and unusual or curious pieces that are great for your unique interior décor ideas… and if there’s something in particular that you’re after, we can help to source it for you. We just want a little shop that inspires the imagination basically.”

Tenfootcity loved this place, go and check it out yourselves and also visit the other small independent traders in the Trinity Indoor Market, Old Town of Hull and give them your support for their enterprise.

COME AND PLAY SOME CIRCUS GAMES Alone: A solo circus performer in a sawdust ring circled by the ghosts of circus’ past. A story is told. It’s a poignant story the performer tells. Laughter? The audience laughs.

They shouldn’t. They really shouldn’t but it cannot be helped. They are bad. Naughty.

But, this is funny. Very funny. Very, very funny. This is circus. Or is it theatre? Perhaps, it is performance as philosophy.

Weird, wacky and wonderful. Award-winning circus legend Danny Ronaldo brings Fidelis Fortibus to Hull for his first appearance here since his much-lauded, and applauded, appearance at The Hull Freedom Festival in 2012.

Fidelis Fortibus can be experienced at Circus Ronaldo Tent, Queens Gardens, Hull, from 29th Aug to 1st September.

‘CAT IN THE SACK’ CRAFT & GIFT SHOP Cat in the sack is a delightful little craft & gift shop which includes unique artwork from about 35 local artists, as well as some national, and International pieces. They have a wide selection of hand-crafted items such as , pottery, wooden signs, prints, cards, upcycled furniture, upcycled lamps, cushions, baby clothing and much more.

It’s a friendly little interesting shop and it’s tucked away down the secret little Tenfoot, just behind Heron on Newland, and right opposite the fantastic Zoo Vegetarian Café.

The name “Bonilass” derives from the nick-name of one of the co-founders, Fiona “Bonnie” Ndlovu, who began her entrepreneurial journey in 2011 with yard sales, which developed into pop-up-shops in various locations around her native South Africa.

Having lived and worked in Hull for over 16 years now, Bonnie and her son Lawrence “Dragg” Sibanda, (known locally for his musical prowess) sought to take their business on-line to reach both a local and global market.

It will be featuring Live bands playing Mod music and DJ’s playing classic Mod/Indie/Brit-Pop tracks as well as the beautiful sounds of Northern Soul and Motown. Bands include ALL MOD CONS doing the music of THE JAM, ‘NOT QUITE GEOFF’, ‘SOUL PATROL’ and also ‘SEAN FINCH.’ All outside during the (hopefully) sunny daytime …. and then inside on the night.

HUMBER STREET GALLERY HIGHLIGHTS THAT YOU NEED TO GO AND SEE THIS SUMMER. ECSTATIC RITUALS

WHAT ARE WORDS WORTH?

Witness Hull Fair as you’ve never thought about it before.

‘Ecstatic Rituals’, from 7th September until 20th October, reaches back as far as medieval times, when the fair first started, to examine Hull in its heyday as one of the UK’s major shipping ports. The exhibition features various artists who look at Hull Fair through its traditions, rituals and folklore as well as illustrating our past and present ideas about what it means to be ‘British.’

Has the exhibition, ‘Instituting Care’ by research-led performer Jade Montserrat been inspired by my own early works such as ‘Ian Woz Ere’ and ‘City Iz Ace’ scribbled on public places across the city in the early ‘70s? The Scarborough-based artist comes to Hull to chalk directly onto the inner walls of Humber Street Gallery. Admittedly, her work, consists of jaw-dropping large scale workings based upon language a lot more informed, astute and provoking than the basic minimalism of my seminal ‘Amber Aggro’ years ago, but I like to think she’s just moved it on a little bit.

CUCUMBER FELL IN THE SAND

Interesting title for an exhibition, eh? Gets your attention, doesn’t it? When we say that this show is about food that’ll get you more interested, won’t it? If we fill in a bit more detail by saying that the artist, Francis Disley, and collaborators, use sculpture, textiles and plant life, to explore our relationship with what we eat and investigate food production and its effect on the environment, you’ll know what to expect…. Except you won’t, because we haven’t also told you that the exhibition has one floor focusing on scent-giving devices which enhance relaxation, rest and reflection and a second floor which comes complete with mobile planters filled with vegetables and scented plants associated with stimulation and energy as well as sculptural filtration systems that explore how food is produced commercially. Something for your senses, then? Something you’ll all find fascinating, stimulating, and interesting.

As a 13 year old my efforts were a rebellion against authority and the strict authoritarian nature of my school in particular.

Similarly, Montserrat questions art education by using art, based around words. She explains that this ‘offers fragmented reflections on the experience navigating education, working as an artist, and living in the UK.’ Obviously, whereas my scrawls such as the ’73 classic ‘IF Luvs AR’ (with obligatory heart and arrow) posted on a toilet door, undermined the conventions of Law, plus spelling and grammar, this exhibition subverts the idea of a quiet place, such as a gallery, by having words that actually shout out their message.

ON STAGE IN HULL THIS SUMMER Ever Since Little Richard challenged the accepted confines and conformities of popular music with his very first ‘‘A Wop Bop A Loo Bop A Lop Bam Boom” each generation has cultivated its musical icons. Over the next few months Hull’s venues and Theatres are playing tribute to many of the great ‘pop phenomena’ stylists of the last seven decades for you to wallow in some nostalgia. Here’s a few you’ll like…

THE ELVIS YEARS (Hull City Hall - 10th November) Youth culture began in the 1950’s with Elvis and his pelvis.

Girls went crazy. Parents became apoplectic. The Bible-Belt was shaking with fear ‘for the corruption of our youth’ (Ha ha.)

‘The Elvis Years’ takes The King from The Sun Sessions to the Las Vegas years and incorporates extraordinary film footage plus many costume changes in its two-hours of fantastic hits such as ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘Heatbreak Hotel’, ‘Suspicious Minds’, ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’ and ‘It’s Now or Never’,

MY, MY, MY, DELILAH Hull City Hall - 25th October) A sexy Welshman once found it wasn’t unusual for 60’s chicks to throw their scantiest at him. This fitted with his well-publicised promiscuous lifestyle. Now he’s a very wellrespected Sir Tom and fully deserves this ‘in concert’ tribute which covers five decades of Tom Jones from a blues bawler (and brawler) and racy rocker to the purveyor of pop ballads and the silver-haired modern lothario of ‘Sex Bomb’. Feel free to fling your lingerie. Or your wife.

STAX OF SOUL (Stage Door - Comedy Lounge – City Hall - 24th August) It does what it says on the tin. ‘Stax of Soul’ is ram-jammed full of classic soul. Move those feet to the beat and shake that body. This nine piece band has been have been getting people up to ‘get down’ for over thirty years and, as we all know…

MUSIC OF THE BEE GEES: YOU WIN AGAIN (Hull City Hall – 5th December) The Bee Gees gave youth rebellion a soft white underbelly and three-part harmonies and soon became million selling sixties & seventies hit-makers. After wringing dry public enthusiasm for pop balladry, the Brothers Gibb stepped into tight, white, crotch-hugging, jump suits and, in one falsetto move, created ubiquitous disco. Stayin’ Alive, How Deep is Your Love?’, ‘Jive Talkin’ and ‘Tragedy’ which all as remain ‘Dad-Dance’ delights even today.

THE DOORS ALIVE (Welly Club – Fri 15 November) Unless you’re expecting the singer to pull his dick out ‘The Doors Alive’ is the closest you’ll ever to get to an authentic Jim Morrison gig. Ignoring the cock factor this show offers the full front-man attitude, lizard-king snake-hipped shape throwing, and richly sensual, deep, velvety, blues voice of Morrison, plus the jazz-flavoured keyboard artistry, shining guitar, and powerhouse drums of the band. Added authenticity is given by the use of exactly the same instruments and stage equipment as the original LA rockers. So, you get the sound, the look, the presence and magic of a Doors gig…. Just not the cock sadly.

AN EVENING WITH MERRILL OSMOND (Cottingham Civic Hall - 14th December) Punishing itself for the revolutionary rock and flower power eras, America started to produce wholesome family groups like the Jackson 5 and their bleached bread and saccharine equivalent The Osmonds. Merrill Osmond, sang on the majority of the Osmonds 27 gold-selling records. He arrives in Cottingham to play the hits and also tell us about singing hymns on telly, the truth about Donny and Marie and what Little Jimmy was really like on tour. Will he also explain what it’s like to have thousands of teenage girls screaming, wetting their panties, and lusting after you when you’re just a cleanliving Mormon boy? You’ll have to ask him yourselves.

ADAM ANT: FRIEND OR FOE (Hull City Hall 15th November) From failed punk to glam, slam, thank you, ma’am superstar!

Adam Ant dressed to impress and became king of the music video Market. MTV crowned him ‘Sexiest Man Alive’.

Smash Hits made him their ubiquitous cover star. He hits Hull to perform his landmark solo album ‘Friend or Foe’ and a treasure trove of punk-pop containing hits like ‘Goody Two Shoes’, ‘Dog Eat Dog’, ‘Stand and Deliver’ and ‘Prince Charming.’

CLARE GROGAN’S ALTERED IMAGES (Welly Club – Sat 28th September) Altered Images began as Siouxsie sound-alikes and debuted with the sublime ‘Dead Pop Stars’ single. The post-punks amongst us loved the stark, dark, searing disjointed, agonising of the seminal Images. Surprisingly, we also quickly became fond of the pure pop version of the band with a coquettish Claire flouncing, bouncing, as frisky as fuck and as fizzy and irresistible as lemonade. 35 years later the sunny songs such as ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘I Could Be Happy’ remain the same.

Claire Grogan may well now be all grown up now, but she’s coming to put her spell on you again.

AN EVENING WITH ALAN McGEE (New Adelphi - Sat 12th October) What if The Beatles never happened? A recent film posed this question. Perhaps, we should, instead, enquire where would we have been without Alan McGee? Madness and mayhem skipped hand in hand with the maverick genius throughout the 90s. Nobody else would have signed Jesus & Mary Chain or My Bloody Valentine, surely? Certainly no one else saw any potential in Oasis or had the foresight to payroll a move into dance music by psychedelic rockers Primal Scream. McGee will talk about bands, breakdowns, drugs, politics and the creating of Creation. You’ll want to listen. Unmissable for genuine music aficionados, this is actually.

SOMEONE LIKE YOU: THE ADELE SONGBOOK (Hull City Hall - 5 October) The lass has only released three albums. Yet, to use the singer’s favourite adjective – what fucking songs! Everyone knows such classics as ‘Chasing Pavements’, ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ and ‘Hello’. Katie Markham, picked out by Adele on the Graham Norton Show, leads a full band with backing singers, into the exciting arena of an Adele live performance. This internationally-acclaimed show will get you toe-tapping and hand-clapping to the slow, very slow, and slightly faster songs you know so well.

BOYZLIFE (Welly Club – 7TH September) Boy bands? Waddya reckon? The Beatles were a boy band cleaned up, put into suits and advised about stage presentation by Brian Epstein, The Rolling Stones were set up as a rougher, tougher, scruffier, Fab-Four by Andrew Loog Oldham, and the Sex Pistols were brought together, dressed and expressed into the world by Malcolm McLaren.

Are today’s Boy Bands much different? What’s not to like if you like schmaltz and cover version perfection. Westlife and Boyzone have come together to bring you the best of both including 23 British #1 singles. Come along, singalong and dance along to ‘manufactured pop’ at its very best.

They’ve had extensive plays on national radio with BBC 1xtra’s Sian Anderson calling their single ‘Viral’ a “BANGER!” and their latest music video ‘Gambia’ has hit well over a million views.

LIFE IN HULL AND GLASTONBURY… The past twenty-four months have been a whirlwind for Hull band LIFE. From releasing their critically-acclaimed debut in 2017, touring with the likes of massive punkband Slaves and being nominated for the BBC 2018 Album of the Year award alongside the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Stormzy. Not bad eh? But who are the band and what are they about? Here’s a look inside what makes ‘em so great.

Frontman Mez and drummer Stew both work at the Warren Youth Project in Hull. Mez describes the project as ‘kicking back against austerity Britain’, and ‘providing the young people of Hull with a place to express themselves’. Mez’s hatred for ‘austerity Britain’ was one of the major factors in inspiring him to form this band, and definitely something we can all relate to! Music is a great way of expressing yourself, it’s given us this perfect platform to voice our views and anger.

Growing up in a working-class family in the avenues area of West Hull, he and his brother Mick, have formed strong liberal ‘power to the people’ beliefs, and their brash music is a fantastic reflection of this. With inspiration coming from the likes of The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers, (can’t get better than that! – Ed.) LIFE’s debut album, Popular Music demands your attention. It’s basically heavy punk riffs combined with lyrics about giving the middle finger to the Tory government, and anyone who dares to support them. The band’s live performances are something to behold too.

Mez’s stage presence is enormous, and guitarist Mick’s energy is electric. They have created a persona that inspires the young people of Hull, and for them, the only direction here is upwards. When asked about their future

plans, the band confirmed they are gearing up to make album number two. (See below.) If you haven’t heard their first effort I can strongly recommend giving it a listen. Only the future can tell, but these lads may just be the best thing to come out of our city for quite some time.

Introduced onto the stage on Friday tea-time by veteran punk John Robb (of Membranes fame) they got a great reception, particularly from the sizeable Hull contingent in a decent sized crowd. They played an energetic set of old favourites and songs from their soon-to-be-released second album, with bassist Lydia bouncing around and Mez receiving cheers everytime he mentioned Hull, which was pretty much every third sentence! More cheers for encouraging the crowd to ‘Fuck the Tories’ whilst displaying a set of oversized pants, emblazoned with the odious visage of Boris Johnson, draped across the drum kit. ROOSTA, AND HIS HULL ‘AFRO-BEATS.’ Roosta is an ‘Afro-Beat’ artist, engineer and music producer based in Hull. Originally from Nigeria, Roosta recognised his natural abilities in music from a young age with influences such as Fela and 2face Idibia. After moving to the UK in his teens he began his musical and first started making rap music in 2006, when he was known as Biggz from Lazy Eyez Entertainment and made quite a name for himself in South East London where he was living at the time. His passion for African music was incorporated into his style and, due to the growth in popularity of afro-beat music in the UK, he was able to find his place in the music industry.

His name was changed from Biggz to Roosta when he rebranded his image in 2011. Through his connections in Hull, Roosta split his time between Hull and London working with different aspiring musicians along the way, He has performed at many events/festivals and club nights in cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Doncaster and Hull. Most recently he hosted and performed at the African fashion week live events (Hull) in 2018 and 2019 and the old school house, Hull (loud noise entertainment).

Roosta now works as a sound engineer and producer as well as making his own music - He is part of G-mode Records alongside artists such as C Notes and Young Fendi. He records and produces music for many aspiring artists in the area and also mentors younger artists to help develop their interest in music production. G-mode owns and manages a professional recording studio –The Arrch Studio- in Hull, where all of their music is recorded and produced.

- was released on sound cloud on June 21st 2019, it comprises of 7 tracks, all written and produced by himself. The EP also features other growing afro beat artists such as Da C and Pastor Rexx.

When asked about the concept of the EP, Roosta states: “Hearing the new sounds that artists like Burna Boy, Kizz Daniel, Zlatan and Mayorkun have brought to the scene recently, I was inspired and motivated to drop my own style of modern afro beats. So I confined myself to the studio for a week, and in them 7 days I created the concept and framework for 7 tracks…. Each one a banger!!

Roosta’s aim in Hull is to represent afro beat music, share his cultural hedritage and get people moving!

BUNKERPOP HULL’S ‘BIZARRE’ MUSIC ENSEMBLE… Bunkerpop were formed in 2016 by Paul John Sarel, Trevor Simpson, Mark Blissenden, Jonathan Wainberg and CarlosMacklin and they deliver an experimental mash of energy and electronic sound with ‘pronouncements.’ They have been described as sounding like Neu, Holy Fuck and Talking Heads. (I said they were “bizarre” ! – Ed.) Their self-produced Kickstarter-funded album is set for release in the summer of 2019. They’ll be playing a few lives shows (they may be at The Humber Street Sesh but they didn’t confirm that) but they are playing at the Fast & Bulbous Festival on August 16th and London Paper Dress Vintage on Augsut 29th.

As lazy journalists at Tenfootcity, we’ll let a proper music writer Zak Sloman of ‘Muzak’ explain their style to you (hope he doesn’t ask for any money though! -Ed.) “Having built up a devoted following in recent years with an eclectic sound drawn from a broad range of musical influences, Hull five-piece Bunkerpop have delivered a self-titled debut album. Comprising of 12 tracks totalling almost 54 minutes, the band have split their first offering into four manageable parts – all named after colours – each containing three songs, which all reflect a true sonic diversity. The opening group of tracks – the ‘Red Side‘ – begins with ‘Start Something With A Stop‘, a synth-heavy number that evokes the musical stylings of German electronic pioneers Kraftwerk. Despite the fact that it only really comprises of the same four bars of synth repeated on a constant loop, it does an effective job of advertising the quintet’s penchant for avant-garde instrumentals and prepares the listener for what is to come. Following this is ‘(Are You Ready) For Something‘, which, in comparison to the opener, is a more melodic-sounding affair dominated by piano keys, a consistent underlying tribal drum beat, and the use of snippets of distorted dialogue. Rounding off the first part of the release is the ‘Bunkerpop Theme‘, which marks a return to the synthled, new wave-esque sound of the opener, albeit with a generally more chilled-out vibe.

Moving onto the ‘Blue Side‘ now, and ‘Stop‘ – a track that will be familiar to anybody who watched the band live in their first year – is a rather psychedelic offering, featuring sounds of crashing waves, and an acoustic guitar rendition of the theme tune to classic children’s television programme ‘Camberwick Green‘.

My personal favourite track, ‘Kijk‘ is another one of the quintet’s songs to have become a live favourite, being described by fans as “Super Mario on acid“, which upon listening to this, can be regarded as quite an accurate description! In comparison, the ‘White Side‘ opens with a more traditional sound. ‘Newtown‘ – the seventh track – is noticeable for being the only one to contain so-called “proper” lyrics and vocals, dealing with the boredom of city-centre life, with the use of sound effects being kept to a bare minimum. This number almost acts as a gateway for general listeners who may be put off by the more surreal fare, as following song ‘Don’t Upset The Hawk‘ sees the collective go back into pure avant-garde mode. The remainder of this offering, including last part the ‘Black Side’ mainly goes along at a laid-back pace, with some creative experimentation along the way. ‘Wet Brains‘ – a seven-minute epic – has a relaxed vibe for the majority of that time, however, in the final minute, the sound really gathers pace, building up towards an overwhelming finish. ‘Harmony Wheel‘ has a playful, jazz-esque vibe to it, ‘Lovely Eno‘ is a truly atmospheric-sounding affair, and ‘Action After Warnings‘ closes proceedings by featuring the quintet at their most improvisational.

‘Bunkerpop‘ is a well-crafted album, highlighting a true knack for musical creativity, and provides concrete evidence that the band care more about the music they produce rather than pandering to the lowest common denominator in order to generate a big financial profit, something that – especially in regards to the mainstream – is sadly becoming a rarity these days.”

DEAN SHAKESPEARE. ‘UNDER THE INFLUENCE.’ Hi Dean, who are you exactly and what do you do?

“I’m Dean Shakespeare and when I’m not working or looking after my two beautiful children. I run, with a few friends, the Events Company ‘Under the Influence.’ “ So, what’s your background and what brought you to this position?

“I was born in Hull and grew up into music, clothing and sports. I worked in bars and clubs initially, whilst also running a vintage clothing stall at Hull University. At 24 I did a degree in Media technology. I used the student loan to put on monthly gig nights in Hull, starting at the legendary Adelphi.

Jacko gave great early advice to me and the very first UTI night happened in Oct 2002. Soon the night was running regularly with the great support of a network of friends (far too long to list, however you know who you are) and the night enjoyed some great local success. The local success was followed by out of town bands like Black Wire, Maximo Park, Mohair, Les Flames, The Sunshine Underground and Little Flames all wanting to play. Things developed quickly and it wasn’t long before Jamie T, Jack Penate, Lightspeed Champion, Mumford and Sons, The Ordinary Boys, Miss Black America and The Kooks were playing ‘UTI Presents.’

Through hard work and the trust and support of a whole host of Hull people (Gav Brennan, Dave Mays, Mark Hall, Hannah Lutkin, This is ‘Ull Team, Mark Page, Steve Snowden, Paul Leonard, Nick Parkinson, Nigel Holmes, John Peters, Alex Darke …. again far too many to mention, and I personally do appreciate and thank everyone that has helped and supported UTI over the past 17 years)…UTI was able to expand and start putting on shows at Lamp, Welly and Hull University giving many bands their debut Hull shows. (Including Glasvegas, Friendly Fires, The Maccabees, Catfish and The Bottlemen, Public Service broadcasting, Alt J, etc) whilst also hosting some musical legends in the form of The Fall, The Wedding Present and The Bluetones. Fast forward to 2019 and UTI is celebrating 17 years and now hosts shows in York as well as Hull.”

What is your main motivation to do what you do?

“The main motivation will always be the love of being able to promote live music and interact with all those involved.

Whilst many shows won’t even breakeven, they’ll still be as enjoyable for myself, the crowd and the venue, as those that do. It’s so enjoyable and rewarding that it is able to run with the enthusiasm and enjoyment of a hobby.”

How do you choose, or decide on the bands/acts that you want to promote?

“Around 50% of the artists we work with now, happens with direct contact from them, due to the reputation we’ve achieved. The other 50 % is through myself listening to new bands, reading blogs, fanzines, industry mags and contacting the artists/agents direct. Lots of emails are required on a day-to-day basis, however there’s also the added bonus of constantly listening to new music.”

What have you got planned for the future?

“UTI has around 25 shows announced for the remainder of the year across Hull and York with two special 17th Birthday shows still to be announced. I hope to have around 30-35 shows in the last half of 2019 and then we’ll start looking at the first quarter of 2020.

2019 see’s UTI working alongside Back To Ours to program a stage at H.S. SESH. Having been part of the original team that started HSS, this will be a special moment to be back working with them. The last three years has seen UTI partner up with BTO to bring Live music to areas of Hull that wouldn’t normally be associated with the level of shows we’re trying to achieve. Having been a part of the team that was able to bring Black Grape, The Coral, Shed Seven (Acoustic) and Reverend and The Makers to North point shopping centre on Bransholme has been a career highlight. Not to mention The King Blues, The Pigeon Detectives and Badly Drawn Boy to The Freedom Centre on Preston Road. Again the support of individuals such as Lou Yates, Carys Turner and the whole NPSC team has made this a reality. If we can continue to achieve events like that I’ll be very happy.”

Classic Albums You really ought to hear.

Dr. Lee Freeman is our resident avid collector of ‘popular culture’,… Music, Books and Films… and in these spreads he recommends some of the greatest albums of all time for you to check out.

Joy Division – Unknown Pleasures (1979) Joy Division were one of several Mancunian bands encouraged to start making music by punk, formed after Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook had attended the Sex Pistols gig at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in July 1976. But, after exploding with such fury in 1976, Punk had quickly burned itself out. By the time Joy Division had gathered in Stockport’s Strawberry Studios in the Spring of 1979 to record their debut LP, the band were about to unknowingly dictate the direction of post-punk for decades to come.

The track ‘Interzone’ apart, with its Stooges guitar riff, there is not much on Unknown Pleasures to suggest Joy Division’s punk roots. Factory records’ producer, Martin Hannett, transformed the band’s live sound for the studio, and the album reflects the decline of the industrial north and the ennui of Mancunian grey slate skies. It’s the sound of the birth pangs of post-punk and the industrial city in terminal decline. The sonic brutalism of Sumner’s discordant guitar, Hook’s octave defying bass, Stephen Morris’ driving rhythms and synthesisers and sound effects, push the direction into the area of Krautrock and the Berlin sound of Eno and Bowie. Add Ian Curtis’ sci-fi literate lyrics into the mix (Curtis was a fan of the J.G. Ballard and William Burroughs) and Unknown Pleasures claustrophobic intensity and growling menace signposted the post-punk future with Peter Saville’s iconic cover artwork of a radio pulsar adding to the futuristic, dystopian feel of the album.

Stereolab – Peng! (1992) Stereolab were formed in 1990 by ex-McCarthy’s, Tim Gane, and French vocalist and songwriter, Laetitia Sadier. Over the course of 20 years, the prolific pop revolutionaries influence would exceed their commercial impact and Peng!, their debut LP, is a great place to start for anyone unaccustomed to the band and wanting to immerse themselves in Stereolab’s extraordinary brand of philosophical avant-garde indie-pop.

Tracks like ‘Orgiastic’, ‘The Seeming and the Meaning’ and ‘Mellotron’, set the standard for later motorik/Krautrock influenced Stereolab efforts like ‘French Disko’, whereas ‘K Stars’ and ‘Surreal Chemist’ evoke a more ethereal and psychedelic electronica.

Although Stereolab have rejected the Marxist label attached to the band, there is a radical iconoclasm to their words and music. On ‘SurrealChemist’, Sadier sings: “True life embodying pleasure principle’s noblest triumph/Over the cowering mendacity of bourgeois/Christian civilisation”.

Which is not a line you could ever imagine being included in the Ed Sheeran songbook, is it?

Dusty Springfield – Dusty in Memphis (1969) In an effort to break free from her pop straitjacket and to branch out into soul, Dusty Springfield signed for Atlantic records to make Dusty in Memphis with R&B legend, Jerry Wexler.

Uncomfortable with the new recording techniques which meant the songs were written in collaboration in the studio rather than being presented to the singer complete and ready to perform, Springfield suffered a debilitating loss of confidence and almost pulled out of the recording. Her vocals were eventually recorded in New York, over the Memphis backing tracks laid down by the Memphis Cats who had worked with soul and rock and roll legends Wilson Pickett, King Curtis and Elvis Presley. Dusty in Memphis flopped on release but has since come to be regarded as an exemplary merging of southern R&B and British pop and one of the greatest crossover blue-eyed-soul LPs ever made.

Leonard Cohen – Songs of Leonard Cohen (1967)

Already an established and critically acclaimed poet and novelist, in 1969 Leonard Cohen released his debut folk album and the singer-songwriter would go on to become a legend in the “Tower of Song”. Cohen’s lyrical genius lay in his ability to unearth poetry from ‘among the garbage and the flowers’ and there is a spirituality and a touch of the sacred about Cohen’s entire musical oeuvre which elevates him above the majority of other pop and folk performers.

Blondie – Parallel Lines (1978) Blondie were founded by guitarist Chris Stein and former Go-Go dancer and Playboy bunny, Deborah Harry, in 1975. As the band line up settled to include Jimmy Destri (keyboards) and Clem Burke (drums), Blondie would go on to become one of the biggest bands to break out from New York’s CBGB punk scene to crossover into mainstream chart success.

Parallel Lines was Blondie’s third studio album and became the band’s breakthrough in the States. New producer Mike Chapman, whose pedigree had been in Glam rock, working with The Sweet, Suzi Quatro, Mud, Smokie and Racey, ruffled feathers with his perfectionism, forcing the band to step up their game and complaining about their lack of musical ability. The results of the often-fractious recording sessions, however, confirmed Blondie’s position at the forefront of new wave.

The album yielded six singles, including ‘Hanging on the Telephone’, ‘Picture This’ and the consummately crafted pop of ‘Sunday Girl’. On the non-single ‘Fade Away and Radiate’, the electronic opening nods towards Bowie and Eno’s Berlin trilogy and the closed high hats and shimmering electronic keyboards on the disco smash, ‘Heart of Glass’, had Burke admitting a Kraftwerk and Saturday Night Fever influence. Later down the line, other black music influences would filter into the band’s output with ‘Atomic’, ‘Rapture’ and ‘The Tide is High’.

Dr. John – Gris–Gris (1968) Dr John was the stage-name of Malcolm Rebennack, a New Orleans guitarist and session musician. Influenced by the flamboyant Professor Longhair, whom Rebennack met as a teenager and performed with throughout his early career, Rebennack adopted the Dr John alter-ego, whose music and theatrical persona drew heavily on New Orleans traditional cultures such as the Mardi Gras and voodoo.

Gris-gris – a New Orleans term for voodoo- is Dr John’s debut album, a startlingly original mix of New Orleans blues and jazz with rock and roll, psychedelia, funk and tribal percussion and chants thrown into the gumbo. Recorded in Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles with a host of New Orleans musicians, the record dismayed Atlantic records’ chief Ahmet Ertegun who, after hearing the finished recording, refused to release it, complaining, “How can we market this boogaloo crap?” The album failed to chart in the US and the UK but has subsequently been regarded as one of the most innovative albums ever made.

Dr John received the honour of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. He died in June earlier this year.

Galliano – A Joyful Noise Unto the Creator (1992) Galliano consisted of Rob Gallagher, Constantine Weir, Michael Snaith and Crispin Robinson and a loose collective of musicians, including ex Style Councillor, Mick Talbot, who produced A Joyful Noise Unto the Creator, the band’s second LP. Galliano were the first signing to Gilles Peterson and Eddie Piller’s Acid Jazz label, leaving with Peterson when he moved on to create his own Talkin’ Loud label in 1990 with DJ Norman Jay. The acid jazz sub-genre is encapsulated by this album’s groovy mash-up of jazz, funk and soul.

Its modernist heritage updated for the 90s with hip-hop and rap and filtered through a hippy stoned radical environmentalist agenda.

An Absolutely packed summer of ‘Culture’ in the city!

“Hull really comes to life in the summer months when the sun shines and the temperature rises, the city looks its best and there are events and activities on practically every weekend. It’s also an exciting time for Absolutely Cultured with one of our busiest programmes of exhibitions and events at Humber Street Gallery, and our team of volunteers will be getting the city talking with a fun new project at the end of September, along with supporting a whole host of events and activities in their scandalous blue uniforms.

We kicked off the festival season in mid-July with the PRS Foundation New Music Biennial which took over venues across the city to present a unique snapshot of some of the best contemporary music in the UK today. The diverse programme included music across all genres and included Music for Seven Ice Cream Vans written by award-winning composer Dan Jones.

The new piece was commissioned by Absolutely Cultured and captivated people in communities across the city who heard the intriguing interwoven harmonies as the ice cream vans moved in and out of earshot.

The new programme of exhibitions at Humber Street Gallery was launched recently with Frances Disley’s The Cucumber Fell in the Sand opening on 13 July. The show explores Hull’s food heritage and features sculpture, painting, textiles and plants and runs until 29 September. In the gallery’s Project Space Scarborough-based artist Jade Monserrat’s Instituting Care opens on 20 July and is open until 1 September. The installation consists of large-scale charcoal drawings made directly on the gallery walls. Towards the

end of the summer Ecstatic Rituals explores urban folklore, the concept of ‘Britishness’ and the tradition of Hull Fair going back to its medieval roots. The exhibition runs from 7 September to 20 October.

There is also an extensive programme of events to accompany the gallery programme including workshops on how plants and wildlife can live in harmony, growing food crops in suboptimal conditions, propagation methods and an opportunity to make your own vegan flatbread. UNO’S RELOCATES TO NEWLAND AVENUE

Uno’s, one of our most popular, down-to-earth, genuine Italian restaurants in Hull, has now moved onto Newland avenue after 4 successful years on Princes Avenue.

The manger, Les, who originally helped to open it with Stefano (who is now running Osteria on Holderness Road - but who still has close links to Uno’s) explained to Tenfootcity….

“Princes Avenue was good for us on the weekend evenings, but we needed to have the midweek, daytime customers, to be able to thrive and Newland Avenue is perfect for that, so that’s why we’ve relocated. We’ve let all of our regulars know and it’s been great in our first few weeks. We haven’t changed, we’re still UNO’s, but we’re just in a different location. It’s just a case of all those regulars following us, but now also attracting and welcoming lots of new customers who may have never known about us before.”

And the move is working. Lots of new people have discovered Uno’s and their response has been great, with lots of them returning already, creating a whole new base of regulars because of their authentic, affordable Italian dishes, made by real Italian chefs. It’s the same as it always was, an Italian Trattoria, as Stefano, from Rome, first described on opening Uno’s originally…

“A Trattoria is a more relaxed, friendly and welcoming restaurant that you will find all over the back-streets of Italy. A Trattoria is never ‘posh’ or ‘pretentious’ and it will never be expensive, but the food will always be better than what you will find in the more expensive places. This is the sort of down-to-earth family-friendly place that normal Italian people prefer to eat in, and we’re recreating that in Hull.”

It’s got a really nice relaxing interior, friendly staff and a nice “al-fresco” area at the front, for the Summer evenings, making it one of Tenfootcity’s favourite places. (Especially because they play a regular background of Soul & Motown music – and that’s because of the education I gave to Stefano when he first arrived in Hull… and Leslie loves it as well!)

So, that’s exactly what UNO’s is and you’ll now find it on Newland Avenue.

It’s the same restaurant with the same staff, but it’s in a better location and the same great friendly and vibrant atmosphere.

If you’re not already a regular, go and experience it.

Hands down one of my famillies best dining experiences in Hull EVER!!!

“GIN IS LIKE A GODDESS!” Lucky lass Sydell Ann Brigden checks out Hull’s ‘Gin School’ at Hotham’s Ltd.

Like many other people these days, I’ve found a new found love for gin. The boom in the popularity of Gin is like a whole new vibe for an evening out. Consisting of many gins, various tonics and whatever fruits you’d like blended with them. Gin is like a goddess, she’s bold, full of adventure, doesn’t hold back and never disappoints. The cultivation and varieties of gins are amazing and the Yorkshire region is producing some of the finest gin in the world.

To us Hullensians, Hepworth’s Arcade is an institution, lovingly known as the ‘Joke Shop Arcade’ to many. It’s a glistening gem on a beautiful crown that bestows our city. which always had me in awe as a child, and makes me wonder about the beauty of the city pre-war, it’s a glimpse into the past, our history, and I like that, and this is where you’ll find Hotham’s.

I remember the start of the Gin boom and tasted some really awful mass-produced nonsense which I couldn’t enjoy at all. So seeing this Gin distillery in Hull, pop-up, was honestly really exciting and I was really honoured to attend the ‘Gin School.’ Not only did it look apothecary, it felt divine. Simon is modest and calm. A perfect host, I loved that he’d always break into a smile when he flowed with his words. We all learnt about the history of gin and found out some tales of a bygone era, I liked that we were involved in the history of making gin whilst creating our own, unique, oneof-a-kind, blended gin.

The Hotham’s ‘Gin-School’ is a perfect night-out, be it a date, a girls night, a guys night or, like me, riding solo. The boyfriend already had other plans but I’m a sucker for gin, so I didn’t hesitate to say yes to the experience. Jar upon jar of scents, textures and colours flood a table that we all stood around. Smelling, sharing and deciding what we’d each like to put into our own carefullycrafted gins. Each jar, when opened, was like you’d never smelt that scent before and naturally, being totally inquisitive, I wanted to smell every jar!

There’s a table of flavours when you sit, so you can understand pairings alongside your very own

‘distilliar.’ (That’s the title of expert Gin-blenders I presume?) Although I’m not really that clever, I did feel utterly accomplished that I can now say that I have made my, very own, one-of-a-kind gin. The process takes around three hours, which sounds daunting but, trust me, its three enjoyable hours of history, drinking gin, making gin and learning some stunning and exciting facts about Hull, Hepworth’s Arcade, and the depths of the gin world. This is all Simons forte and he’s very good at it.

My gin was full of coconut, kaffir lime leaf, fig, pear and nutmeg. Like a warm winters pie full of spice and splendour. I wanted the winter holiday vibe as this gin is a gift to the future husband, and if he now knows it after reading this, that’s all right, I’m happy to share that surprise in advance!

The school records your ingredients, weights and names, so that they can recreate your gin exactly. So if someone pops round and loves “your” gin they can re-create it perfectly themselves. Imagine giving your gin as a gift! The school creates it… but you’ve actually made it yourself, and I think that’s something to be really proud of.

The night ran smoothly, everyone was included and, even though I went there alone, I didn’t feel alone. The gin school is friendly, seamlessly pretty, jar after jar , bottle after bottle and a snug but very alluring space upstairs to hang jackets, use the ladies and see the depths of grandeur that the fun Gin school has gone to. It’s just very plush and honest.

Everyone got together and talked about their flavours, mine was described as “Christmassy” which is true. I’m the girl at Christmas making fresh mulled wine, making my own paper snowflakes and decorating the whole house into a winter wonderland, so why wouldn’t my gin reflect that beautiful time of the year?

The gin is a perfect gift, two bottles, or a larger one upon request, tops off a perfectly good night.

Artf’Ull: Film in Hull.

B Negative (Mollusc Films: Philip Cod, 2018) B Negative is the latest feature from Philip Cod’s Mollusc Films, a small Hull-based independent production company. The film was written and directed by Cod and made on a micro-budget and shot entirely around Hull’s Old Town in under three weeks. Screened for the European Film market last year and earning a semi-final place in the Comedy World Network International Film Festival, the film has been taken up by Indie Rights, a small distribution company based in the US. B Negative appeared at the International Vampire Film and Arts Festival in July and should be available soon on several platforms, including Amazon, iTunes Google Play etc. It will also be screened at pop-up community cinemas and will be out on DVD later this year.

Barry (Jack Lee) and his partner Kate (Louise Willoughby) are unable to have children. When Barry is invited by his friend, Alfred (Paul Diver), to attend a meeting of ‘The Ancient Order of Nocturnal Immortal Phlebotomists of Albion’, he discovers it is an organisation of vampires. However, a lack of members with the correct blood group means that the Order is in danger of dying out. Seeing an opportunity to gain immortality as a vampire, as a substitute for being unable to carry on his bloodline, Barry attempts to join the Order, hoping to attract–some “fresh blood”- to the group. Eventually finding himself unable to carry out the ritualistic initiation demands of the organisation and as his relationship with Kate becoming increasingly fraught, Barry becomes more and more dejected and depressed.

Despite its budget, B Negative’s production values are remarkably high. The film is a comedy/horror with an emphasis on the comedy. Although it may be a little lacking in horror for some tastes, the film’s humour works terrifically well. B Negative also features some wonderful performances with Lee, as the hapless Barry, together with Willoughby, hilariously conveying the boredom of their lacklustre relationship. The entourage of dwindling vampires at the Order are led by the wise but increasingly weary, Pops, played by the excellent Ailsa Driver.

However, best of all is Diver as Alfred, a sophisticated and urbane comic foil to Barry’s inexperienced blunder. Also, look out for an hilarious cameo from Laura Peterson as an IVF nurse, listing a variety of pornographic titles as possible stimuli when Barry is asked to provide a semen sample at the clinic.

It is one of the comic highpoints of the film.

B Negative is a modest , but enjoyable comedy - a kind of What We Do in the Shadows set in Hull - which deserves to reach a wider audience, particularly in Hull because it’s one of our own . Keep an eye out for it.

GREAT SOCIAL-REALIST FILMS OF THE BRITISH NEW WAVE A TASTE OF HONEY/ THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER

A KIND OF LOVING / BILLY LIAR

Tony Richardson, alongside Karel Reisz and Lindsay Anderson, was one of the pioneers of the British new wave which emerged during the late 50s, originating from Sequence magazine and the Free Cinema movement. The new wave revolutionised the nation’s cinema with gritty depictions of a northern working-class landscape portrayed with a documentary-style realism and preference for location shooting, combined with a daring approach towards themes of sex, and violence and with an emphasis on the burgeoning British youth culture which, with the help of four lads from Liverpool, was about to shake up the world. The first of the new wave films was Jack Clayton’s Room at the Top (1958) and Clayton’s class antagonism and working-class consciousness was followed by Reisz’s Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) which I have written about previously in Tenfootcity (see Spring 2017 issue). Whereas Saturday Night and Sunday morning dealt with a working-class male protagonist, A Taste of Honey dealt with issues of sexual relationships through the eyes of 17year old Jo, played by new wave stalwart, Rita Tushingham. Based on Shelagh Delaney’s play of the same name and with Delaney and Richardson co-writing the script, the film is one of the earliest to deal with issues of race and homosexuality. Delaney was only nineteen when she wrote the play. A working-class girl with Irish ancestry, brought up in Salford and who failed her 11 plus, Delaney’s influence on British social realism cannot be overstated.

Watch the film and play Smiths bingo, spotting the lyrics that indie icon and future Alf Garnett of pop, Morrissey, purloined from Delaney’s drama, including the immortal line: “I dreamt about you last night and I fell out of bed twice.” Shelagh take a bow.

Like Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner was based on an Alan Sillitoe story. Made 15 years before Alan Clarke’s Scum, Richardson’s film deals with the injustices of the borstal system and has Hull’s Tom Courtenay starring as Colin Smith, a prisoner who uses his talents as a cross-country runner as a means to escape the reality of his existence. The film is renowned for introducing a more poetic and stylistic aesthetic to the naturalism of the new wave. Featuring some extraordinary point of view camera shots and flashback sequences and utilising an innovative sound design with an astonishing subversion of the progressively patriotic hymn, ‘Jerusalem’, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner introduced a more nuanced view of youth delinquency, portraying the petty criminal as the anti-hero fighting against the real villain: the authoritative social and economic system.

Hugely influential, Romero’s films have been imitated and parodied, but their visceral qualities and intelligence have rarely been matched.

A Kind of Loving was John Schlesinger’s first feature film, an adaptation of the Stan Barstow novel, co- scripted by the Billy Liar novelist, Keith Waterhouse, and Willis Hall. It has Alan Bates and June Ritchie as Vic and Ingrid, two lovers trapped by circumstance and with little prospect of escape from a less than perfect relationship and a dreary, run-down, industrial Manchester. The theme of thwarted ambition and entrapment was continued in Schlesinger’s following film: Billy Liar. Billy Liar marked the end of the northern working-class new wave cycle of films as British cinema’s attention increasingly turned towards “swinging London”. The film is notable for its rejection of realism and an emphasis on fantasy, with its central protagonist, Billy Fisher, played once again by the ubiquitous Courtenay, dreaming of becoming a writer and fleeing to London to escape his drab Yorkshire provincial life and stultifying job as an undertaker’s clerk. He conjures up Walter Mitty-like fantasies of being a military hero and leader of the imaginary land of Ambrosia and is partial to machine-gunning down parents, friend and bosses who are constantly annoying him.

The film has aged better than most of the films of the new wave.

This is probably owing to its fantasy element and humour and the extraordinary performances of Courtenay and the captivating Julie Christie as Fisher’s free-spirited girlfriend, Liz. The epitome of 60s fashionable youth, we first see Liz after she has hitched her way up from London, coolly swinging her handbag as she walks around the city and looking as if she owns the place. It is one of the iconic cinematic images of the new-found independence and freedom of 60s youth.

Schlesinger would work again with Christie in his next film, Darling (1965), which saw Christie earn an academy award, before moving to the States to achieve great success with his New Hollywood masterpiece, Midnight Cowboy (1969)

CLASSIC FILMS YOU REALLY OUGHT TO SEE….

UP THE JUNCTION

(Peter Collinson, 1967) In 1965, Ken Loach directed the documentary drama, Up the Junction for the BBC’s Wednesday Play. The drama was watched by 10 million viewers and received over 464 letters of complaint, mostly centred on the play’s bad language and depiction of sexual promiscuity, prompting the bed-ridden aunts, uncles and the puritanical killjoys of Mary Whitehouse’s Clean up TV Campaign to protest against: “The propaganda of disbelief, doubt and dirt that the BBC pours into millions of homes” through “a stream of suggestive and erotic plays which present promiscuity, infidelity and drinking as normal and inevitable.”

Peter Collinson’s version of the play starred Suzy Kendall as the middle-class Polly, slumming it in her relationship with the workingclass Peter (Dennis Waterman). The film downplays the social commentary of Loach’s original but keeps the sex. Although it was slammed by the critics, the film was popular with cinema audiences.

Two years after Up the Junction, Collinson would go on to direct the iconic British swinging 60s heist comedy, The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine.

KES

(Ken Loach, 1969) Although Ken Loach was never a part of the new wave, his films are a vital component of the social realist cinema of the country. As we have seen, Loach’s break into filmmaking came through television and after directing several episodes of Z Cars he made his mark with two ground-breaking and controversial television dramas: Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home (1966).

Kes was Loach’s second feature film and is important in establishing the director’s naturalistic, observational style of filmmaking which would become his trademark. Apart from Colin Welland, who played the sympathetic teacher Mr Farthing, most of the schoolchildren and teachers in Kes were from the Barnsley school location where the film was made, with local schoolboy, David Bradley, as Billy Casper. In an effort to create a sense of verisimilitude in his films, the utilisation of non-actors is a device Loach has consistently adopted throughout his career Notable for an hilarious football match led by the tyrant games teacher, Brian Glover, my favourite scene is when the headmaster (the actual school’s head) canes some children in his office. As he lectures the children for their ignorance, he is totally unaware that the kids are laughing at him and that, owing to his own ineptitude, he is about to punish an entirely innocent boy.

Kes demonstrates how the education system is utilised by the ruling class to crush the spirit, creativity and individuality of working-class children in order to make them surrender to their role as fodder for the labour market. Casper briefly escapes his fate by capturing and taming a kestrel and the sequences when he flies the bird are brilliantly filmed, creating a poetic resonance, beautifully summarised

by Loach as depicting “the bird that flies free and the boy that is trapped.”

THIS SPORTING LIFE (Lindsay Anderson, 1963)

Another more experimental and innovative example of the new wave, This Sporting Life, stars Richard Harris as an up-and-coming Rugby League star, Frank Machin. Despite his physical prowess on the field, Machin is prone to introspection and self-doubt and is tortured by his inner demons. Filmed on location in the North of England and at Wakefield Trinity’s Belle Vue stadium - the Rugby League action is particularly impressive -This Sporting Life is arguably the greatest sporting film ever made. For me, it is certainly the best example of the new wave, its brooding, poetic and psychological intensity hinting at expressionism considerably more than most of the social realist films of the period. A Raging Bull for the industrial north of England.

Anderson was one of the great directorial talents of British Cinema. In later films like If (1968), O Lucky Man! (1973) and Britannia Hospital (1982) he would continue to make startlingly original films containing scathing attacks on British society and capitalism.

This has happened throughout history and still happens to this very day…. And believe me, there’s more to come in the near future, especially if we’re close enough to disrupting their ruling hegemony by getting REAL Socialists through the doors of Downing Street for the first time ever! They will be ready to do anything necessary in order to prevent this happening, so be prepared. Here, our very own musician/political activist, Joe Solo explains more in the history of this constant oppression of the working-classes…..

“June 18th marked the 35th anniversary of a dark and brutal day in British history, one whose legacy casts a shadow over all of us even today. On that Summer’s morning striking Coal-Miners made their way from up and down the land to the picket outside Orgreave coking plant. They were used to the subterfuge of back roads and early morning walks across fields due to police road blocks trying to prevent them getting through; but that day they were waved past by officers only too happy to help, some even providing directions as to where best to assemble. It soon became clear why.

As miners gathered, many in shorts and t-shirts anticipating a day in the sun, they found themselves facing massed ranks of police in full riot gear, some in ill-fitting uniforms with no ID on their shoulders many of the pickets would later believe were soldiers drafted in to bolster the numbers and the violence. The police lines suddenly parted and through them rode mounted officers swinging truncheons at anyone and everyone, breaking bones, cracking skulls. It was a bloodbath. As miners struggled to run to the aid of fallen comrades they too were clubbed to the ground.

When some tried to fight back they were filmed and the BBC edited the footage to make it appear as though this was the first act of the day, and police were merely responding to the provocation and violence of the pickets. In this way the state broadcaster deliberately assisted the Thatcher government in smearing miners as violent thugs undeserving of public sympathy.

95 were arrested. They were charged with crimes which could have seen them jailed for life. The charges were thrown out of court when it was proven the police statements had been doctored and there was no burden of proof against these men.

This is the iconic image from the ‘Battle Of Orgreave’ that illustrates the brutality from the ‘forces of the state’ that have always been used against the working-class and which unfortunately continues to this very day. – Ed.

So… Doctored by whom? And on whose orders?

The same process of smear campaign and fabrication of evidence was used by the same police force to deny justice to the families of 96 football fans five years later, but it had already been honed in the summer of 84 at Orgreave which was an act of Class warfare designed and executed by a malicious Tory government, (under the evil Thatcher –Ed)…hell-bent on breaking the strike, defeating the NUM and attempting to destroy the whole trade union movement.

So I’d like to pay tribute to comrades in the Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign who will fight on until we have that inquiry no matter how long it takes. If you want to stand at their side, look them up, support their events, wear their t-shirts and let’s build an unstoppable chorus of voices no politician can ignore. It matters.

It matters because Orgreave is by no means an isolated incident.

I have been involved in events commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo massacre of 1819, when cavalry, under orders from the local magistrate, charged a peaceful crowd on horseback, sabres slashing all before them, killing 15 and wounding hundreds. The images of that day have a clear and obvious parallel with those of Orgreave. Two events more than a century and a half apart, and yet a part of the same process, the oppression of the Working Class, a reminder that if we get ideas above our station they will see to it that we are crushed. Yet when you study history- not THEIR history of Kings and Queens and Generals - but OUR history, that of everyday people quietly changing the world whilst others take the credit- you see more Orgreaves, more Peterloos. Like the brutal repression of the Merthyr Rising; or Churchill twice turning British soldiers against their own people at Tonypandy and then George Square; or more recently the Poll Tax Riots or the Battle Of The Beanfield.....we are ‘safe’ only so long as we never challenge, and the price of that safety is our enslavement as working-class people.

It is important the truth of Orgreave is dragged out into the light and those responsible for its planning and execution are discredited before the eyes of the world. And it is important too that we remain eternally vigilant so it can never happen again ….but as my Editor said, in the intro above …. Be prepared.”

The Rugby League Scene in Hull…

I’m back! Did’ya miss me rugby fans? Hope so! After the culmination of the third and final Hull derby of the season (which didn’t fail to disappoint) the over-riding theme with these East Vs West games is as clear as day...the result doesn’t represent how the table looks. Hull FC are sitting pretty in 3rd, well in the playoff places, compared to the Robins who are in a scrap to the death with some Rhinos and some Broncos who don’t know when to quit! What a season it’s been so far, and it doesn’t look like disappointing anytime soon. Especially now, after Hull KR have just beaten Leeds in their own backyard!

Hull FC have been ‘Team inconsistency’ this year.

When they wanna perform, they’re an unplayable force. But if you catch them on an off-day (ask Warrington!) expect them to leave the field with their tails between their legs. The find of Ratu Naulogo from Rugby Union (they’ve technically nicked him from the army) has been an astute piece of business. The resigning of Mahe Fonua, along with the ‘Tongan Terminator’ Manu Ma’u is sure to whet the appetite of the ‘Old Faithful’ but before they can cast their eyes on their new toys, they need to find the formula of stringing some bloody performances together.

Hull KR in my opinion have been unlucky this year. Sure, in some areas they have been poor (the Easter weekend was a prime example of that) but they don’t deserve to be where they are. Their problem this year is they cannot perform for the full 80. Home games against Salford and Catalans earlier on in the season illustrate this, when they were in the ascendency, only to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, and this is

the difference between a relegation battle and a fight for the playoffs. In contrast to their noisy-neighbours, the precarious position that the Robins find themselves in has left them unable to announce signings for next year as they cannot guarantee top flight Rugby. If Rovers were to get relegated, these contracts would become void along with the rest of the squad. Not announcing players is the right idea at the moment. This hasn’t stopped the rumour-mill however. With One-Time Loanee and former Hull FC youngster Jordan Abdull supposedly signing on the dotted line, no doubt to replace the retiring Super League legend that is Danny McGuire, whose performances in recent times, especially against his old club Leeds, have shown he’s aged like a fine wine.

How will the season end then? Well I don’t have a crystal ball but I would put my money on Hull FC reaching the ‘play offs’ as well as another challengecup final (they seem to have a knack for that these days.) I’d also back Rovers to stay up, with London going down. Which is disappointing as the Broncos haven’t been the pushovers that everyone thought they’d be. I’d much rather it be Huddersfield to go down as they offer Fuck-All to the league except some fucking annoying bloke whacking a cowbell when you go to their ground. (I hope the man in question knows he is universally hated by the rest of the fans in the Rugby League!). But, like I said, I don’t have a crystal ball. I mean I’m pretty sure it’s mathematically possible for Rovers and FC to meet in the Grand Final! It’d be like 1980 all over again. If the unlikely happens again, last one out, hit the lights.

Faithf’Ull? – HULL CITY AFC

THE BOSS IS GONE. LONG LIVE THE BOSS. Well it’s finally happened, football’s ‘Mister Blue Sky Thinking’ and the most positive manager in the Football League, finally couldn’t stomach the job anymore and walked out on us four weeks after the final whistle blew. Nigel Adkins and his pal Andy Crosby chose to ignore the new contract on offer and put themselves out of work, or in the frame for a job at another club. I believe the latter, but it still takes some balls to walk out on a decent job, and managing a Championship club is a decent job, with apparently nothing to go to. It’s becoming almost an end of season ritual at City these days, as is the last minute scramble to cobble together a squad for the new season. I’m getting a bit sick and tired of it to be honest because everyone knows this is not the way to prepare for a new season. But we’ve operated under these conditions for virtually all of the Allam’s time at the club. We seemingly learn nothing and sadly, we now expect it. It’s what we do.

Personally I liked Nigel Adkins, he was a decent man and gave us a couple of decent seasons although I thought he underachieved last season. I didn’t see much in the Championship in 2018/19 that was a lot better than us on our day, and I just thought that after such a slow start to the season we eventually fell away when we had a sniff of a Play Off place. That was down to the manager and, of course, the lack of investment in the January transfer window didn’t exactly help the cause. But he’s gone and a new bloke is in the dug-out, in the shape of Grant McCann and his assistant Cliff Byrne. Both untried in the Championship and both on a twelve month rolling contract. Welcome to Hull City lads, I sincerely hope you both enjoy the ride!

It was the length of contract that finally pushed Adkins over the tipping-point and I can only think this was because the club might, (I only said might!) finally get sold. I’ve heard snippets, as everyone else has, of possible interest, but no-one can pin any names, or actual facts to the rumours. If indeed they are rumours and not just wishful thinking from the dwindling faithful.

But it is interesting that McCann has accepted a 12 month contract without any hesitation. He obviously fancies the job and obviously the Allam’s must still hold out that they will find a buyer and their days in control are numbered. They must be, because the income streams are drying up as we speak and the owners told us yonks ago that there will be no more investment. So it’s just a matter of time and price.

The price will come down when the cash comes in for Kamil Grosiki and Jarrod Bowen, plus the considerable extra wedge that will drop through their letter box when Harry Maguire is finally auctioned off. When the Allam’s have got, what they believe they are owed, the bones of the club will eventually be picked over and that is when we will get the new owners that everyone is pinning their hopes on. I say be careful what you wish for because we have been in this situation before and it ended up in dire circumstances for the club.

So the new season? The club will have to put the makings of a decent team out there on the pitch and I think McCann will be given a couple of bob from pending sales to keep us ticking over.

He might even pull a rabbit out of the hat and unearth another Billy Whitehurst, Ian Ashbee or Gary Brabin character. It does happen sometimes you know!

I seriously cannot see us as promotion contenders, but mid-table mediocrity isn’t such a bad place to be when you look back at the history of our club. We used to dream of being mid-table at this level before everyone’s expectations went through the skylight when we eventually did reach the promised land.

Sorry lads and lasses but we have to tread a bit more water before we as a club move on and this much talked about sale finally reaches fruition....and it will one day. Remember, no-one lasts forever.

The Last Word. Summer 2019

As we explained in the last issue we’ve unearthed some new local young talent due to our projects with St. Mary’s Media College.

Charlie’s opening article in the last issue was so well received, we’ve decided to let this cheeky & feisty young Hull woman have the ‘Last Word’ again!

KEEPING IT BEACH BODY STEADY BY CHARLIE O’LOUGHLIN As the granddaughter of a fierce landlady who owned the Hull pub scene and the daughter of an incredible fiery redheaded teacher, I’d like to think I’ve inherited some of this resilience against taking shit from anything that stops me from becoming the best version of me. So, this year I’d like to commence the opening of my inaugural boycott on being “beach body ready”, and I’d love for you all to join me.

Well here we are again, whether you’ve merrily skipped into it with a glass of a fruity alcoholic beverage in one (or both) hands, or you’ve been dragged kicking and screaming into it, demanding your dark morning lie-ins be brought back, the days have inevitably passed, and we are well and truly into the ‘Season of Love.’ The glorious Summer.

From the ‘Summer of ‘69’ (Bryan Adams), ‘Cruel Summer’ (Bananarama), ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ (Shawn Mendes) and even ‘Sex in the Summer’ (Prince), we all have our own ways of celebrating the season, but when does the Summer of ‘Self-Love’ come into it? Put aside the cheesy summer hits, the season also comes with a lot of hiding under baggy clothes in fear of getting our wobbly bits out, and an overriding lack of self-confidence. Understandable when the norm of society’s ‘ideal body’ is being so thin your internal organs pop out of your eyeballs.

Summer, the time of the year where it’s apparently expected for our Hagrid legs to be moisturised and shaved within an inch of their life until they resemble the head of a newborn child. Where 10 trotters emerge from their sock hibernation, lose the fluff from in between them, the freakishly long hairs on big toes are yanked out and a lick of the finest “brightest-shade-of-red-velvet-gel-shinemake-your-toes-look-less-like-troll-feet” colour is applied. Not only is that considered a necessity, but so is losing an extra 5lbs alongside it. Mais pourquoi I ask?

Frankly this summer I cannot, (with a capital A)… be Arsed. My legs remain lizard-like and prickly, my toes have had the same chipped nail polish on them for about 3 months (that stuff will outlive all of us in the apocalypse I swear), my hair is shoved up into a bird’s nest on the top of my head, my gradual tan is patchy and odd –and yet I’m happy being the lovely size 14 that I am, stretch marks, cellulite, sock fluff and all. I’m beach body ready, and I have been every year of my life.

Being “beach body ready” means accepting your extra mince pie (or 3) body at Christmas, those boozy May bank holiday bodies and the ‘Fat fish & chip Friday’s at work’ body. So, bin off that overpriced gym membership and spend it on a takeaway, drop that insta filter on your pics, embrace that body hair on your arms, your pits and your downstairs bits, and bloody just have a good time!

And most of all, remember that you don’t have to please anyone but yourself this summer, so put your cossie on and just enjoy being you, wherever you are, whether it be at Hornsea or Halkidiki.

And if anyone is looking that closely at the hair on your toes, just tell them to bugger off!
