We have existed in Hull for 11 years now and this is issue 46. (Consistent eh?) Usual issues are Spring, Summer, Autumn and Christmas/ New Year.

This magazine exists because “WEAREHULL.”A unique, inspiring, challenging City that stands alone, like a light at the end of a tunnel on the edge of the U.K. It’s at the terminus of a long dark corridor that leads you away from the rest of that strange and disturbing world out there, into our enclave of true reality called HULL! place that harbours our special lifestyle, distinctive accent and our unique ‘on the edge’ sense of humour. The aim of this magazine is to reflect all of the above and to highlight and encourage all of the vibrancy and creativity that exists herein. In other words… you read Tenfootcity and you’re in tune with our magical part of the world. Our Editorial policy is one of total Social-Inclusion, non-discrimination, bloody (but peaceful) revolution and Freedom of Speech – but most of all, having a laugh!

AMIDST EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD, OUR OWN FANTASTIC YEAR IN THE SPOTLIGHT CONTINUES AND IT’S BEEN BRILLIANT HASN’T IT? Yeah, we’re only half-way through, but it’s already been a resounding success for the City Of Hull and the elevation of our reputation in the nation is going to last for years now. Hull is now regarded as one of the most important cities in the U.K. and has become a “want to visit” destination for millions of people, who previously hardly knew we even existed.

We did it! And, as well as all of the hard work of the C.O.C. team, the army of volunteers and the support of most of the prominent members of the Council… (there’s still a few pathetic ‘jobs-worth’s’ hanging about in there though, who just still seem to want to make life difficult for everyone)… YOU have ALL actually done this all yourselves! By embracing it, supporting it and turning out in great numbers for a myriad of events, you have all contributed to the atmosphere of celebration and pride in our special city. So, well done to everyone! There’s loads more still to come of course, because we’re only actually half-way through - and as usual, in Hull’s own independent magazine, we try to pick out as many highlights as possible and feature the people and events who are creating the ‘City Of Culture’ - but always remember, everything includes the importance of YOU being involved, because without the interest of an audience… art, expression and creativity is actually meaningless.

As regarding Tenfootcity ourselves, and after the controversy we caused with one comment that we included in the last issue, I’d just like you all to know that I am half-Welsh, due to my Grandparents being from Monmouth in South Wales, so, as well as admitting to you that I have a soft spot for Cardiff City (sorry), I have to say that I have often been referred to as a “Sheep-Shagger.” I take it in the right spirit of course and just laugh, as you should. (And most Welsh people will tell you exactly the same!) I have never once considered it be ‘offensive’ or ‘racist.’ (FFS, do you really think I actually do that? - Be serious. Please!) I can’t believe that people actually take harmless colloquialisms like that so seriously, but unfortunately apparently some do! Which means we’ve had a lot of explaining to do regarding a provided article we carried in the last issue which included a similar term. Due to our collective decision not to edit it out, because we believed it fitted in totally with the humorous context of the writer’s little ‘rant’ and, although definitely ‘rude’, we didn’t think (at the time) that it’d really be ‘offensive’ to anyone! However some people obviously did and, because someone decided to make an “official complaint” about it, we’ve had loads of shit to deal with and many questions to answer.

The words ‘tea-cup,’ ‘storm,’ ‘mountain’ and ‘molehill’… spring to mind. We obviously regret including it now and we’re very sorry that we did, and have accepted that it was probably a mistake to do so. Suffice to say that when we’ve all got so many serious issues to deal with in our society at the moment, it seems sad, that people concentrate on things like that. (Especially the local BBC T.V. who made it appear a million times more serious than it was! We will be covering that in the next issue btw.) The world’s gone mad of course. There was a time when we all smiled together and most of this was regarded as harmless fun. (We may as well all stop speaking or expressing ourselves and ban all humour due to the pressure of the new fascistic ‘Language -Police’ amongst us - so please be embarrassed if you’re one of those, because you’re causing more damage to cohesion in society, than you’re actually solving, and you’re just creating unnecessary conflict!) Anyway, I won’t go into any more detail here because it’s covered elsewhere in this issue.

This is the SUMMER 2017 issue of Tenfootcity highlighting the third season entitled ‘FREEDOM’ (quite apt really, eh?) and our next issue (Autumn) will be to help launch the final season, which will be out in early October, so please get in touch with anything you want to include or contribute, or especially ADVERTISE - (because that’s how we pay for the bloody thing of course) - and then we can provide our fiercely independent and much-loved service to the community, which is…..Tenfootcity!

Have a nice summer if you can - and try to spread some Peace and Love - but NEVER forget your sense of humour, because, if we all can’t smile at anything, or laugh together anymore (and at each other occasionally,) there’s gonna be nothing left worth fighting for.

FREEDOM!

Well, we’re half-way through now and it really has been fantastic hasn’t it - and it just keeps getting better with more, oh so much more, still to come.

This whole thing has raised Hull to a level we’ve never experienced before. It’s incredible really.

It’s galvanised the City, it’s brought everyone in together, it’s raised our spirits and expectations and ambitions, it’s inspired us all - it’s made us proud!

WE ARE HULL! The City Of Culture directors described this third season thus: “Our third season celebrates Hull’s rebellious streak and it’s Freedom of thought.(Are they talking about Tenfootcity or what? Hee hee - Ed.) It not only explores Hull’s role in the emancipation movement, but also looks at broader interpretations of Freedom, as the City comes together to create and debate, share and enjoy, reflect and re-image.

Join us as we continue our incredible journey!”

Just about everyone in Hull should have been involved in some way by now because it has managed to touch us all. As I’ve said in these pages before, YOU are ALL part of it just by interested in it. Any expression or creativity is irrelevant and meaningless unless it reaches at least one person - and so that is why EVERYONE is important and EVERYONE is a part of our ‘Culture.’ An audience is almost as important as the artist! I know some of you reading this go to just about every event that you can manage and that is fantastic, but I just wanted us all to spare a thought for those amongst us, who ARE just as much a part of Hull as the rest of us, but who may not be able to get about easily, or even at all. Some people are actually confined to their homes, hospitals or even rest homes, so don’t forget anyone because they are ALL part of the Culture Of Hull. I just hope that these people are able to enjoy things as well as us, by reading about them, seeing reports on television, listening to things on the radio or possibly keeping up to date through the various websites if they have the access. I don’t want anyone forgotten about, because they’re all part of US. Page 6

But anyway, for those of us who can get out and about, and go wherever we want, it’s totally impossible to take everything in - but I know we’re all doing our best! The third season ‘FREEDOM’ is under way right now and, of course that word has many connotations, (For many of us! - Ed) many of which we’ve touched on in this issue of Tenfootcity of course. It also has important meanings in the context of the history of our City, but it also has implications to consider regarding ‘Freedom’ in the modern world, right at present and also into the future.

We all have a lot to talk about and think about regarding the subject and notion of FREEDOM. On the ‘Freedom Festival’ spread (next page) you’ll notice that we’ve referenced our (as is usual) excellent cover - this is because Tenfootcity was instrumental in helping to launch the original ‘Freedom Festival’ Ten years ago and this cover was based on a nod of respect both to the concept of ‘Freedom’ and also to our own history and to reference the cover that we produced back then!

There are some great highlights coming up during this Summer Season and, of course, we’ve covered many of them in these pages, but of course we can’t cover everything, you just need to regularly check the website to keep in tune with what’s happening, when it’s on and where it’s at; www.Hull2017.co.uk (You should also pick up one of their excellent booklets from any of the City’s information outlets.)

Hull is now enjoying probably the highest profile we’ve ever experienced as a City since… well since we became a City actually! And it’s absolutely brilliant isn’t? Our profile around the country (and many other parts of the world) is the greatest it’s ever been. We are regarded as a vibrant, emerging, cosmopolitan, welcoming, friendly, cheeky (and very funny) City, and a place on the list of ‘must visit’ places for a growing number of people. People now actually know where we are! Especially due to the fact that the C.O.C. team managed to persuade the BBC to make sure Hull was on the national weather map on a permanent basis!

There’s a real new-found Pride and Optimism in the people of Hull. It’s tangible. You can actually feel it.

There’s a new verve, a spring in our steps and this has been the result of the majority of us getting involved in this special year, so let’s keep on enjoying it and make sure this mood of positivity and optimism continues in Hull, well after this year is all over and is carried on by us all, into the future.

Freedom Festival celebrates its 10th year with the most diverse and varied arts, spectacles, exhibitions, spoken-word, talks, debates and eclectic World Music program to date.

Tenfootcity Magazine has been instrumental in the support, promotion and development of our Freedom Festival right from its very inception, because when the very first organisers (the directors of the Edinburgh Festival) first arrived to check out the City in 2007,to find out what’s happening here and to meet the people who are a part of it all… one of the very first meetings they arranged, was with Ray and myself (Ray being the original founder-partner of TFC) - because they’d picked up a copy of Tenfootcity and were impressed because they realised that we were independently promoting the ‘Culture’of this City from a street level and so obviously we would be able to give them loads of information and introduce them to all of the right people. They weren’t wrong of course, and now, ten years after that initial Freedom meeting, we’re still doing the same thing for Hull, but on a much bigger scale of course. To celebrate that time when we helped to launch Hull’s very first Freedom Festival, we decided to emulate the iconic cover that we used at that time - just as a nod of respect to the history of the Freedom Festival - and also to ourselves! And this, apparently, for our special City Of Culture year of 2017, is going to be the best one yet, so you can all start getting excited about it already! Mikey Martins, the Festival Director explained more, about “where we are now” with The Freedom Festival, exclusively to Tenfootcity…

“In 2017 The Freedom Festival really goes back to its roots in 2007, as a creative commemoration of the Anti-Slavery Act, which one of Hull’s most famous son’s – William Wilberforce was such a huge part of making happen, a true leader of the abolitionist movement and a real part of the independent and human soul of this great city. This year’s Freedom Festival will produce over 200 individual performances and events, the launch of Hulls’ International Carnival and artists from more than 30 countries featuring throughout the weekend and also in special preview events leading up to the weekend.

This year’s line-up includes a range of night time spectacular performances and outdoor theatre events including Compagnie Off’s colourful and hugely entertaining ‘Les Giraffes’, Periplum’s outdoor retelling of Ray Bradbury’s Farenheit 451 in a fiery immersive theatrical style and the brilliant SouthPaw’s RUSH which will involve over 100 local participants in a mass dance spectacle, giving voice to a need for change. And don’t miss the indescribable Company G Bistaki’s surreal promenade performance ‘The Tampa Baina Fritz has fallen’ a show from these unique French artists which is so bonkers, funny and brilliant it’s impossible to pigeon hole.

The city centre will be full of world class street theatre, dance, circus and interactive installations to get stuck into and enjoy all weekend, with the festival’s locations expanding again this year across the centre of town.Go visit the new Festival Gardens in Queens Gardens and don’t miss the headline theatrical event in our new festival tent – Counting Sheep Revolution, from Canada and Ukraine, an immersive guerrilla punk-folk opera where you will feast, dance and find yourself in the middle of the recent Maidan revolution in Kiev, a stunning experience not to be missed.

Look out for the exhibitions in Princes Quay shopping centre exploring themes of cultural bias through the lens of fashion and don’t miss the extraordinary talks and debates program including the Wilberforce Lecture delivered by Mr Kofi Anan (Nobel prize winner and former UN General Secretary) plus Blair Imani in conversation with Bob and Roberta Smith alongside conversations with artists whose work you will have seen and an extraordinary line-up of human rights activists and academics enabling debates and discussions for all to be part of.

The headline moments which will be talked about for months to come are to be found everywhere across the festival program from ‘Haircuts by Children’ in Solo hairdressers to the DJ Frietmachine in Festival Gardens and the powerful dance piece ‘D-Construction’ from Cie Dyptic in Trinity Square, it really is an extraordinary program with something for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t always go for the obvious, be brave, be curious, be free to immerse yourself in what is fast becoming one of the UK’s most important and unique Arts Festivals.

The festival will be held from the 1st-3rd September but some shows do open a little earlier to allow even more people to see them, so grab a program from around town in August, check out the website for more details, schedules and ways to get involved and be part of what will be an extraordinary festival with heart and soul firmly rooted in Hull.”

New ‘Collective Youth’ Festival promoting positive Action.

The Collective Youth Festival is a new event for Hull, devised by Lloyd Dobbs & Joe Gibbons to encourage young people to believe in their collective strength and to highlight how positive change in our lives can be achieved with organisation and mobilisation.

Organised by Hull Trades Council, Local Trade Unions and Community organisations, it’s basically a festival of Politics and Music, to celebrate how collective action brings about positive social change whether that’s over single issue politics , green issues , workers rights, your life in general and of course that age old fight against the Tories, who just don’t like you really, do they! It’s also to spread the word that ‘Politics’ isn’t a boring thing (as was proven by the mass Youth involvement in the recent election, with their support of our Jezzer) Politics, put simply, is just actually something that concerns everything, and anything, that effects our lives and how we can challenge, change and influence things for the better. Politics, therefore, is a lot more exciting, interesting and important than people realise. And what better way to highlight this fact, than alongside a Festival of local music? Bands of all ages and genres are coming together with young local, national and international speakers (all rabble rousers of course! ) to inspire the next generation into social activities and become change makers themselves.

Alongside the support from the local Organisations, direction of the festival comes mainly from our Comrades, Lloyd Dobbs (ex-Paddingtons) and Joe Gibbons and also, of course, all of the young local activists that to helped galvanise support for Socialist principles, in the recent election, amongst the Youth of Hull, including Jodie Scott , Pat Smith, Elliot Dean and Anessa Akbar.

The bands/acts that are performing include Endoflevelbaddie, Holy Orders, Young Jack, Cannibal Animal, Joe Solo, Hillbilly Troupe, Let Man Loose, New Aged Vinyl, Bernie Laverick, Marx and The Happy Endings, so it’s gonna be a great musical celebration of Hull Youth Rebellion!

Gonna be a great day this, with a great atmosphere of Unity and Solidarity for the cause, so get yourself, and as many friends and family members, down there as you can please.

LIMITED EDITION PRINT COPIES OF HULL’S POEM ‘THE CITY SPEAKS’ GO ON SALE. The poem that opened Hull’s UK City of Culture celebrations can now be taken home as a beautifully bound limited edition book. The book has been printed on high quality paper donated by the internationally renowned Hull printer G.F.Smith, the company who have featured in the hugely successful Paper City Exhibition in the city’s Fruit Market.

‘The City Speaks’ by contemporary Hull poet Shane Rhodes, reflects Hull’s history and its people. The poem is now engraved in Hull’s newly-paved Queen Victoria Square around the popular fountains and has been used to form the textured paving as a Braille version down Jameson and King Edward Street, integrating art into the city’s £25m regeneration public realm programme. According to local author Russ Litten the words will now; “Last another lifetime, but their sentiment will chime in the hearts and minds of our citizens for generations to come.”

Shane Rhodes, the local poet who penned it, said: “I was born and raised in Hull and although I have lived in different places I have always come back to the city. Those who have read, or heard, The City Speaks poem have told me how much it has moved them and made them feel proud of their roots. The poem’s themes of identity and sense of place have struck a chord and have given voice to a sense of pride in the city. It has given me an opportunity to evaluate my relationship with my home town and consider why I have always returned. In essence, it is my love poem to Hull. Our vision for this book was clear from the outset. We wanted a book which would embody the best of Hull and creating the poem became a journey of discovery which has enabled us to produce something which celebrates the beauty of the printed word, local creative talent and pride in the city and its people.”

Hull’s ROCK AGAINST RACISM Poster tour returns home!

From street art to gallery, from fly- posting to frame, Richard Lees’ legendary posters for Hull Rock Against Racism are returning to Hull. The touring exhibition began in Manchester at The People’s History Museum last September with a launch event featuring Billy Bragg.

The Manchester Evening News called the Posters “Iconic images leading a movement for social change.” It then went on to London’s Rich Mix Gallery and the deputy mayor of Tower Hamlets, Shiria Khatun, described the work thus; “Compelling, and as relevant now as ever.” After this ‘home-visit’ they’re taking the tour to the Edinburgh Festival, and it’ll be there until the end of September. It highlights a positive message to other cities about a City like Hull could mobilise an inspire its people to fight Racism & hatred, celebrate diversity and promote Unity. (Which was actually the name of the club launched by our old Editor at the Adelphi in the early eighties! - Ed) The show is back in Hull now, at the Broderick Gallery until the end of July, so you’ve still got a couple of weeks to catch it.

Richard said, “I’m thrilled that, with the support of Hull City Council and the NUT, my posters have reached a national audience and that Hull people will now have the chance to reconnect with an important part of our community’s proud history of fighting for this cause.”

The exhibition at the Broderick, which also includes two new screen print exhibitions

by Richard called McCarthy Iconoclast and The City of Culture, runs until July 27th.

Has the War now come to Hull?

With his excellent photographs, Tim Everett captures the atmosphere, culture and characters of Hull in his own inimitable way.

When we first got sent this incredible image, we immediately thought it was depicting some sort of war in Walton Street market, or somewhere similar! But fortunately, Tim had just titled it as “A man with a dog.” Which thankfully put our minds at rest somewhat!

What an unblieveable picture this is though.

We just had to print it.

Why? Well because we can, can’t we? … and this sums up the ‘culture’ of Hull just as much as anything else we’ve seen this year.

The 6th Humber Street Sesh Festival is due to take place on Saturday 5th August on Hull Marina. With the City of Culture celebrations in full swing, we’re expecting this year’s event to be the very best yet, as Mark Page explains…

Through our long standing live music night, ‘The Sesh,’ (now into it’s 15th year,) held at The Polar Bear every Tuesday, we have handpicked some of the very best emerging bands and artists, not only from the region, but from across the UK. and in the last twelve months, we’ve been nominated in the UK Festival Awards. (And Mark himself was named ‘Yorkshire Grassroots Promoter’ for the second year running! Which is a great personal honour, because it has been such a lot of hard work & dedication from him of course. -Ed) With the national spotlight on Hull, this really is our time to show off our strength and diversity as a cultural and creative city. For 2017, over 200 emerging acts are expected to play across 14 stages during this one-day event, and with a full Arts programme planned including Live Street Art, Photo Exhibitions, and Light Installations, we’re excited to see what ‘Hull’s Greatest Day’ brings this year. With 30,000 people expected to attend again, we’re confident on delivering something quite special on Hull’s Marina on Saturday 5th August. The festival came about in 2012 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of The Sesh. Its aim was to bring the creative community of Hull together to showcase its brilliance. Our motto was ‘Individually Great, Collectively Awesome’ and that still stands 6 years later. Humber Street Sesh gave confidence to many in the city, and raised the bar for events in Hull. It gave a sense of cultural well-being, long before the city was announced the UK’s City of Culture, and has hopefully inspired others to think big and stage events in the city that weren’t thought possible years before. Since it’s conception, we’ve seen HU1 Festival, Sonic Park Festival, The Big Gig, Curiosity, Assemble Fest, Street Food Nights and many other producers and promoters believing in their capability of staging great events in Hull. We’re proud to be associated with many of these and have great relationships with all.

The City of Culture title has unquestionably seen some amazing events happen in 2017, many parachuted in from outside. With Humber Street Sesh, we’re all about Hull.

Fiercely independent and run by the people for the people. (Sounds just like Tenfootcity! - Ed.) We have over 60 members within our Production Crew, all from the area, and we’re determined to work alongside local contractors and businesses to stage our festival each year. We’re funded by a mixed economy of Sponsorship, Ticket Sales, Bar Concessions and a little funding. We haven’t been given a blank cheque by Hull2017, as some may think, as we endeavor to be self-sustainable. That said, the Hull2017 team have offered us some great advice and support throughout the last year, and helped us with our Festival launch at their new Humber Arts Gallery on Humber Street back in May. We’re delighted to have Hull2017 sponsor our ‘Everyone Back to Ours Stage’ which is to be our industry engagement stage, where we’ve invited some of the very best emerging bands from around the country to appear alongside Hull’s very own garage go-getters, Vulgarians, who will headline this stage, creating networks and relationships with some of the country’s leading labels and promoters. We’re also hoping by working alongside 53 Degrees North, who are planning a week of conferences and workshops leading up to HSS, that we can forge new links and help our artists make that next step within the industry.

by LIFE with support from the likes of King No-One, Fatherson, Avalanche Party and Polo. LIFE have been flying the flag for the city for a number of years, but in the the last year, they’ve supported Slaves on their European and UK Tour, played at the SXSW Festival in Austin Texas, got numerous airtime on BBC Radio One and 6 Radio, and most notably released their debut album to critical acclaim. This is their time, and there really wasn’t anyone else in the picture to headline this year’s prestigious festival. We know they’re going to pull off an amazing show.

We’re also delighted to have the ‘BBC Introducing’ Humberside team back with us for 2017, as they play host to their own stage with a full programme of incredible bands and acts from the region, and for the second year running, we welcome back Strummerville to Fruit, who with Doc Martens support will unleash some of the greatest bands to play at the festival.

We’re very proud to include over 200 acts across the festival, and other stages include the Dead Bod Stage by Minerva, the Addison Green Stage outside Fruit, the HFR Solutions Youth Stage on the Victorian Pier, and of course, we’ll be back on the C4Di Stage@theDock Ampitheatre, which once again will play host to Soul Powered’s Hip-Hop extravaganza with DJ’s, MC’s, Rappers, Breakers and Bands entertaining the masses, courtesy of the support from the Hull2017 Bid Angels. The electro daddy himself and former HSS headliner, Endoflevelbaddie will be headlining this stage with support from the amazing Pearls Cab Ride. There’s also a Fringe Stage running throughout the daytime, within Princes Quay, who have kindly supported us once again this year.

The Sesh: Representing Grass-Roots Creativity in Hull.

As well as the bands, the festival is rich for acoustic acts with the superb ‘Speak-Easy’ hosting within Butler & Whites on Humber Street, and adjacent to that, we have the Hull College Acoustic Stage within Ambiente. There’s also a myriad of performers playing on our Heta KAG Stage which includes everything from acoustic acts to novelty acts and headlined by some of the very best MC’s in the city.

We’re certain along with the 200 performances, and the return of the infamous Silent Disco, Funfair, Skate Park, the Funkywormhole Soundsystem Block Party, Residents Association Disco Tent on the Corporation Pier, Squarewaves Electronica Tent, Original Brew’s Funk & Soul Marquee and Hull College Pop-Up Studios, there’s something for everyone on the day.

There’s a family area too with Scrapstore Workshops and Facepainting being provided. Under 12’s go free and can pick up their wristbands at the Wristband Ticket Pods near the entry gates. BACK TO THE FUTURE! Unique event celebrates ‘Freedom’ & ‘Democracy’ at secret venue…

I definitely recall hearing about it. At that time I was a teenager like the majority of the victims. Britain had a Thatcher government. Could it happen here? I remember it set me thinking long and hard and deeply about all sorts of such things.

‘One Day, Maybe’ is similarly set to activate minds. It is is inspired by the event that got me so reflective over three and a half decades ago. The May 1980 Democratic Uprising in Gwangju, South Korea. It lead to the murder of hundreds of people but paved the way for democratic rule. A lot has happened in my life since then. The world is a changed place. If my teenage self was somehow transported to the here and now he probably wouldn’t recognise me never mind the brave new world I inhabit. And, this is the fascinating premise investigated by internationally acclaimed site-responsive performance team

DreamThinkSpeak.

How many times have I asked myself ‘was it worth it?’ since those formative teenage years. It’s usually a good question to pose but one that is hard to answer. How do you gage worth? Especially if the cost is lost lives. ‘One Day, Maybe’, which will take over an unused Hull building asks if those who died, for the sake of democracy, came back as ghosts, and witnessed the results of their sacrifice, would they think it was worth it? The central theme of this show is the UK launch of a Korean global technology company on the 30th anniversary of the Korean Sixth Republic. The company pioneers new technologies for governments and big-business, including gaming experiences and interior navigation apps. For each performance, the company throws open its doors to the public who are invited to access the public areas, private offices and laboratories.

They are allowed to test and participate in the technologies that are being developed. This technology sends the audience back to May 1980 before bringing them back to the present and then directing them into the future.

With a narrative influenced by themes of Freedom and Liberation live-performance, film-installations and technology all interweave, to create an original and extraordinary event that will envelope, transfix and thrill visitors. This sounds like an incredible experience, too good to miss.

‘One Day, Maybe...’ will happen each day from 1st September until 1st October.

The Magic Numbers

Hull Trinity Festival is back at Zebedee’s Yard in September with some top headline bands and emerging talent in a line-up which will also feature some of the best acts from the local Hull scene. The Magic Numbers will headline on Sunday 24 September and The Ordinary Boys will top the bill on Saturday 23 September. Little Barrie, the band behind the theme of Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul, will also play on the Saturday while the music managers at The Warren are now putting together the line-up of local bands for the event, which is the fifth since HullBID introduced the big stage format. Trinity Festival also continues to grow thanks to sponsorship from local businesses such as Oscars Bar, The Old House and McCoy’s Café Bar. Last year’s Hull Trinity Festival was the first event in Zebedee’s Yard to feature live bands and the venue has since become a favourite with music fans and promoters. Previous years have seen the likes of Counting Coins, The Talks, Black Delta Movement, Fire (TUF) and Bud Sugar, so you know the standard to expect and also Hull members of The Big Music Project will fill the vital roles of stage and technical crew and merchandise team. Stewart Baxter, Arts development manager at The Warren, said: “We always put together a local line-up that is a bit different. There are a lot of new bands coming through and some old ones coming back, so you can expect a great variation of Hull music.”

Once again, the Hull Trinity Festival will be totally free of charge, and everyone is welcome so you’ve got no real excuse to miss out on this one have you!

SILENT IS GOLDEN Silent Uproar is relatively new. It is an exciting Hull- based Theatre company. It is full of ideas.

They say they exist to make the world a little less shit. I believe them. You will too.

The world should appear less shit after you’ve seen ‘A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad)’. That is because its aim is to make you feel really, really, happy about yourself, and the world, while relating a tale about depression! While moving to the really, really, happy about yourself state, you’ll meet Sally. You’ll like Sally. She is the main protagonist in ‘A Super Happy Story’. Sally is a clappy, happy, smiley, laughy, person who just happens to have something going on inside her that she is trying to hide from everyone else. While getting to know Sally you’ll come to realise that you don’t always have to be serious to make a serious point.

Silent Uproar admit to being inspired by the modern world. Their influences are cinema, television, comic books, stand-up comedy, and gaming culture. Silent Uproar are both playful and provocative. They will have you pissing yourself while being poignant at the same time, and to make things even better they are offering a ‘pay what you want’ policy for this pre-Edinburgh fringe performance. Doesn’t that make you feel super happy? Make sure you get yourselves down there then and support the latest talent to emerge from Hull. DICKENS SUPREME.

‘Our Mutual Friend’ At Hull Truck Theatre (16th -19th August ) After divorcing from his wife Catherine, at the end of 1858, Charles Dickens got on with the day job and penned ‘Great Expectations’. He also fell in love with an 18 year old actress. Dickens was 45 at the time.

A couple of years later he, and his new love, moved to Hull where the legendary author began work on ‘Our Mutual Friend’.

This was a tale of the young, poor and homeless of the City brought closer together when the dead body of a friend is pulled from a river. ‘Our Mutual Friend ‘ was to become Dickens last truly great story.

Okay, I lied about the Hull bit. Apologies. However, Dickens did do the dirty on Catherine by leaving her and his ten children for teenage actress Nelly Ternan. Unfortunately, the secretive lovers didn’t really venture North. But, what if they had?

Can you imagine the great Charles Dickens setting his last, most modern and sophisticated work in Hull? It is from this extraordinary supposition that Hull Truck Youth Theatre and Wakefield writer Byrony Lavery have formed a multi-dimensional universe running parallel to accepted reality. It is set in a world of money and muck, kindness and cruelty. There are even allegories to the River Humber. The clever aspect of this production is that this could actually be set in Hull and also, because the production has been brought up to date without losing any of the authenticity of original Dickens, you won’t be able to tell whether this is 1865 or 2017. It’s Dickens, It’s Hull Truck. It’s different, It’s intriguing. It’s good and it really is well worth seeing. It’s as if Charles Dickens had lived in, and written, in, Hull!

FREEDOM?

‘Tyburnia’ Live Film Score at The Adelphi.

The Dead Rat Orchestra, one of the UK’s most innovative ensembles alongside groundbreaking British folk-singer Lisa Knapp combine with filmmaker James Holcombe to take the score of his film Tyburnia around the country. Holcombe will use six projectors and three screens to create a new ‘Directors Cut’ for each venue using locally sourced footage and stories.

For hundreds of years, people in the U.K. who fell foul of political, religious and judicial reforms enacted by the State, were executed for public entertainment and control. These executions chart a history of the UK, illustrating the twists and turns of monarchical and political whimsy, church and state, and the birth of capitalism. In the current climate of enforced austerity and social reform, Tyburnia explores the parallels between contemporary and historical notions of crime in relation to business and property, the spectacular nature of punishment, and the state’s use of the body as a site for political control.

Daniel Merrill of Dead Rat Orchestra said “Tyburnia is one of the most challenging and important projects we have ever undertaken. We’ve been working on it for three years, and it keeps getting more intense. The addition of Lisa’s voice and musicality opens up new avenues of song for us, to enable us to really do justice to James’ extraordinary film’.”

Corbin had the foresight to interview the women she photographed. “It just seemed natural that I should ask the girls about why they dressed like they did” she explains, and what were the consequences to friends and people they met.” Those Interviews together with new photographs of the women they are today, form the collection ‘Visible Girls : Revisited’ and ensure the exhibition is much more a social and historical document than a mere nostalgic, retro, look at the 80s.

80s girls doing it for themselves, in a fascinating exhibition at Artlink Gallery Youth level style-supplements and pop-culture glossies didn’t exist. Any magazine or music paper tackling street fashion tended to focus on men with, perhaps, a token female thrown in as an appendage, exposing a flicker of flesh or glimpse of under garment, and always, but always, wearing a big wide smile. The late 70s was an era when females were frivolous and were still not to be taken seriously when it came to the looks, deeds, and ideals of young rebellion. It was into this social inequality that a young photographer named Anita Corbin first hauled her heavy old Olympus camera into the pubs and clubs in and around London. “They just looked at me and I could see they thought ‘what’s she doing? Luckily most people were like ‘oh look a photographer. Let’s have our picture taken.” Taking Photographs in nightclubs in the early 80s was certainly not a common occurrence, mainly due to the difficulties of shooting in dimmed light. She soon learnt to take her images in the lighter areas of a club, usually in, or just outside, the toilets. Sometimes, she simply organised a later shoot at the subjects homes, or a location where she felt their style would work best. The photographs she took were of young, stylish, females with the kind of attitude normally seen as the exclusive preserve of men. “You couldn’t move for images of men in subcultural settings.” say Corbin, “but I was fascinated by how young women were starting to identify themselves. I think I took the images to show other young women that you could be who you wanted to be.”

The 28 portraits that formed the original ‘Visible Girls’ collection are now at the Artlink Gallery on Princess Ave. They show young women emerging from a male-dominated late-70’s adolescence and finding their own identity as Skins, Mods, Blitz Kids, Rockabillies, Punks and Rastas. Each of them explicitly challenged convention through music and fashion. “I became increasingly interested in the effect that appearance has on everybody’s lives. I was 21 and I was fascinated by the way we used dress as a means of communication/identification and how it can both inform and misinform us.”

There’s certainly a solid, palpable, social, historical and anthropological resonance to these images. The early 1980s was a very unusual time and the energy that permeates the images is still present in them today. Now moving through their sixth decade the original wild roses of those early photographs are now flourishing successfully in such varied fields as commerce, law, and film making!

Carol, who was one of the subjects captured in 1980 wearing a boys tie, sporting boyish hair and a precocious look now lives in Hull. She was captured with her then-partner Nicola (now a writer living in America.) “It doesn’t feel as if it’s me,” she pensively states staring at the picture almost four decades on, “A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then.” When asked what she supposes her 24 year old self would think of ‘present day Carol’ she says “She might think I’m not living the kind of life that she thought I would, but myself and my partner were the first same-sex civil partnership in Hull and the first to adopt, so I think she would still be proud of me.”

This is a fascinating exhibition that proffers a compelling, voyeur-like, view of individual lives lived, societal changes, and female emancipation.

Andy Train This year the eyes of the world are on our city not only for the packed programme of events that Hull UK City of Culture 2017 is delivering, but also for our Pride event celebrating LGBT+ life in our diverse community. This year Pride in Hull has been named the first ever “UK Pride” by the UK Pride Organisers Network, which is a great honour and has focussed the attentions of the LGBT+ community on our fair city.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality and Hull 2017 is leading on this nationally with LGBT 50, a celebration of LGBT+ culture across the arts, that begins with Pride in Hull on Saturday 22 July and closes a week later with ‘I Feel Love’, a concert hosted by Ana Matronic and Scott Mills that will be broadcast on BBC Radio 2, with a whole host of events taking place in-between.

We are often asked whether Pride is still relevant in 2017 or why isn’t there a ‘Straight Pride’. LGBT 50 reminds us that the steps forward, in terms of equality in this country, are only recently won and our current political landscape reminds us that they are built on unsteady foundations.

Pride is still important because although same-sex couples can marry, they often can’t hold the hand of their spouse in public for fear of physical or verbal attacks and members of our community receive abuse just walking down the street. We also show solidarity for those people in other parts of the world that have not made the advances that we have and don’t enjoy the same privileges we do.

Tenfootcity Magazine is Anti-Racist, Anti-Sexist, Non-Homophobic and, in fact, we are against all forms of discrimination or intolerance in our society…. …and so would NEVER include anything in our magazine that WE considered to be against these principles, or that WE considered to be (gratuitously ) ‘offensive.’ But we always maintain the right to a sardonic and acidic sense of humour, and the right to satire, irony and ‘Freedom of speech’ within acceptable boundaries. Basically we believe in FREEDOM for everyone in our society - and therein lies the whole debate.

THE EXPLANATION: In the last issue we carried an article (which was provided to us btw.) After carefully discussing its contents, we came to a collective decision that we believed that some of the language used was (only just) acceptable, but we decided not to edit it out because it would have ruined the context of the article which we decided was rather entertaining. Distasteful yes, but offensive, no. It was a local Hull City fan having a rant about the club he supports and his ‘frustration’ was obvious to detect. This is what we thought became ironically ‘funny,’ in itself, because he actually became the subject of the piece himself! We regarded it from a satirical point of view, whereby the writer became a very entertaining parody of a typical football fan with a beef about how his beloved club was being run and how the fans were being treated. (It was a piece of classic theatre actually!) We laughed at it. We imagined that everyone else would ‘get this’ but we were obviously wrong. We also purposely wanted to see what sort of reaction we’d get and to create some debate on the whole issue of language and humour. A sort of Social experiment if you will, just to see what is, and what isn’t “acceptable” to the majority of us - but also to see what the levels are with this new insidious creeping wave of “over P.C., thought-controlling, arbiters of language and taste,” who believe they know better than everyone else!

We obviously didn’t expect anyone to really over-react, otherwise we wouldn’t have made that decision. (And no names were mentioned anyway, which is an important point btw.) The person who complained, clearly didn’t understand the issue anyway, because he described a couple of common colloquialisms as “racist.” He actually did this on the BBC, which we actually found much more ‘offensive’ - considering our history of properly fighting against Racism all of our lives! (We might have to put a complaint in against him now! Ha ha.) All of you, who know our history, knows where we stand personally - and as a collective magazine team.

Anyway, the phrases used were NOT racist as a top legal expert so eloquently explained to us: “However distasteful the choice of phrases may be considered to be, by some people, they cannot be misconstrued as ‘racist’ because the words used are not race or nationality specific.

Anyone who draws any incorrect conclusion themselves, is merely drawing their own connotations, based purely on their own personal perception.”

In other words, the Lawyer was actually saying that it is actually impossible to describe those phrases as ‘racist’(by definition) and basically anyone who does, is actually being subconsciously “racist” themselves, without maybe realising it, by assuming an inference, that may not have been intended, purely due to their own personal incorrect perception, or deductions, of the meanings or intentions of the phrases. (So you may as well put all of that in your pipes and smoke it!) Anyway, we’re not responsible for the words ourselves, we just decided not to chop them out and that may be considered to be a mistake on our part. But anyway, as our disclaimer clearly states: “Tenfootcity doesn’t necessarily agree with all the opinions expressed in this magazine and so will NOT be held responsible for any individual contributions.

Please note, you may need a good, broad, sense of humour to appreciate some comments. If not - don’t read it!”

Plus, we also give a good warning on the cover about the content, style and humour of this magazine, so we’re amazed that any over-sensitive people keep on reading it! It’s a Hull-style attitude and language (though admittedly, this instance did push it right onto the knifeedge!) - but that’s our remit. To represent and reflect the ‘Culture’, ‘language, humour and attitudes within Hull, so we wouldn’t be doing our job if we just anesthetised everything would we? Plus it’d be a rather boring world.

We like humour and we like controversy. We are Hull and we’re rebels. (Nice rebels who care about people though!)

However, we sometimes make mistakes and this may have happened in the last issue. We’re only human after all! But if any of you have been over-critical of us on this issue, then , as my mate Jesus would say, “Let those of you who are without sin, cast the first stone.” Hands up then. How many of you is that eh? Oh right, none of you at all. Well stop being so bloody judgemental and self-Righteous then! Why not concentrate your attention on some of the much more serious discriminatory attitudes and issues within our society, instead of on people like us who have fought against prejudice all of our lives, before many of you were even bothered - or probably even born!

Right at the last minute (as usual for him!) our good mate Dave O’Kwesia got in touch with a bit of news about his current project for you all to check out. We’ll let Dave, himself, explain…

“We go by the name of Dubungle a dub-reggae-jungle outfit from Hull with rap spoken-word lyrics and singing. We have been together for 2 years now, mostly in the studio, but have been gigging this year on the circuit. We recently supported Don Letts at The Welly Club and, previous to that, we have played at Adelphi Club, Hull Fringe and Hull Heard Events. I have been selected to play at the TribFest this year. We have four members a vocalist, 2 percussionists and a live mixer-producer. Redlocz on vocals, the Wizard on live production and we have just released our latest track and 1st Dubungle video; Dubungle Rudeboy Sound” So, you know who they are now and you’ll be able to find out more through the usual obvious social channels or even www.full-flava.co.uk.

We maintain that we concluded that it was fairly harmless language. Cheeky, distasteful and rude yes, but racist?

No way - as proven above. The fact is, hundreds of people have shown us support in this situation (thanks for all of your messages) but unfortunately a small pocket of uber-liberals (some of these being our so-called “Comrades”) - didn’t ‘get’ the intentions of satire, irony and parody - and so have “chastised” us. Yeah, that’s we thought as well. Who the fuck are they? It’s like a new generation of Mary Whitehouse’s coming through (even though most of you will probably be too young to remember her) - but what a pain in the arse this bastion of right-wing, reactionary, anti-humour , anti-entertainment, jumped-up little Hitler actually was. “We will tell you what you can say and what you can think.” So please be careful you lot, that you’re not starting to emulate her attitudes, because you’ll be drifting very right-wing and becoming intolerant without actually realising it! However, having said that, we can accept that this could be regarded as an “editorial misjudgement” and, of course, we probably wish we hadn’t pushed these boundaries without editing it a bit now! (Cos it came back to bite us in the bum didn’t it!) After 11 years of producing this magazine we’ve had no previous complaints whatsoever, so I think that tells you something doesn’t it? We will maintain our philosophy, our principles and, of course, our sense of humour, so don’t expect Tenfootcity to change, (too much), we’re just going to have to be a little bit more measured in our judgement in future.

THE APOLOGY: We’ve decided ourselves that we wanted to do this. There was no legal requirement for us to do this, but we thought it was the right, proper and ethical thing to do, and we just mainly wanted to do it out of courtesy and respect for anyone who feels they may need it…

Someone complained about the use of the common colloquial language we allowed in the last issue (mentioned above) and then, (after they were made aware of it by this person - or, in fact, by the BBC,) a representative of the local football club also then made a formal complaint about it. It was an article provided to us and we made the collective decision not to edit it for the reasons already described above. So, to those people, and, to anyone else who also feels that it was ‘offensive’ or ‘ inappropriate ‘, Tenfootcity Magazine, would like to sincerely, and genuinely, apologize to you, for what could be considered by some, to be an ‘Editorial Indiscretion’ on our part. We’ll do our best to make sure it doesn’t happen again, then hopefully it’ll be another 11 years before we have to apologize for anything again!

MUSIC’ULL! A round-up of some of the best music and artists connected to Hull.

Headlining The Main Stage At The Humber Street Sesh!

LIFE – POPULAR MUSIC LP Life are possibly Hull’s biggest, most current export, successfully supporting Slaves on an extensive tour and now, with the release of their debut album last month, they move onto another level. Known for their catchy song writing that has a Punk edge, they’ve been at the forefront of the Hull music scene for the last few years, especially when putting on their own nights. The four piece have gone from strength to strength with the resurgence and popularity of the ‘Post-Punk’ genre at the same time as Hull’s music scene slowly delving into becoming ‘heavier.’

This eleven-track LP entitled ‘Popular Music’ is an all out, fast-paced romp which doesn’t feature any dull moments whatsoever – in fact one of their very best offerings ‘Euromillions’ doesn’t even feature until the last track, testament to the all-killer, no-filler mentality of this special Hull band. The sharp overlayed guitar sounds, that they’re known for, pushes the record through and is almost always the driving force behind the tracks. As Mick Sanders, the guitarist, joins Mez Green on vocals on more and more of the songs, their sound becomes ever more dynamic, and the album proves this as they build the momentum throughout the record. With constant releases they don’t seem like a band that are going to stop at any time soon, and they’re a brilliantly refreshing spearhead for Hull’s music scene at the minute. Life. You’ll see them headlining one of the main stages at the Humber Street Sesh very shortly. Don’t miss it.

SERIAL CHILLER – ‘BED MOOD’ Serial Chiller return with their latest single ‘Bed Mood’ and turn their talent for some of the best two-minute track-writing around, towards a campaign for The Youth Warren Project, raising awareness of mental health and encouraging the ability to speak openly and confidently about these issues. Their laid back, simple combination of guitar and drums speaks volumes when creating tracks.

It means that only the very most important features are left within their stripped-back, arguably bare, style. Despite being a relatively new band, they’ve already become one of Hull’s hottest prospects as this style has become more recognisable.

In traditional Serial Chiller style, Bed Mood begins with a hefty amount of guitar fuzz. There are no intros here, and immediately you’re thrust straight into the song without any messing around. This is another constant in their music – the most important part is always the catchy hook that brings you in, and keeps you there, hooked for the rest of the track. Despite being only a two piece they create an energetic and dynamic sound within the guitar drum combination that doesn’t feel stifled, and instead feels completely free. Being released as part of the Three Minute Heroes album means that it’s already in good company alongside Fronteers, Black Lime and The Dyr Sister.

THE UNDERGROUND OWLS We like the enthusiasm of this new young East Yorkshire band, The Underground Owls who were originally formed in 2015 by friends Harry Denness (guitar and vocals) and Harry Easterby (guitar) in the Driffield area. This duo started playing gigs in local pubs around their area and quickly developed a following. The two Harry’s and saxophonist, Joe Ingram all went to Driffield school together, and when the band was augmented by two other musicians who they met at East Riding College Music Academy in Hull in September 2016, (that’s Luke Bushby on vocals and bass with Owen Green on drums), the band immediately moulded together into a very exciting band. After a month of rehearsing, the band had amazingly rehearsed 30 songs, and did their first gig at the Bay Horse in Kilham, November 2016. Then, in January 2017, Martin Jones, the course leader at the Music Academy, set a competition to find an original song by a new band to celebrate Hull’s City of Culture, in collaboration with St Stephens shopping centre. The Underground Owls won this, and on the strength of a broadcast of their song, alongside interviews on BBC Radio Humberside’s Breakfast Show, they got an amazing response from listeners who demanded it be played again! Record label ERC Academy Records has now just signed them and their debut single ‘City of Culture’ is now available on all major platforms such as iTunes and Spotify etc.

Future plans for this young developing band include a forthcoming video, more local gigs, then wider touring and further recordings such as an EP and then an Album. The Underground Owls are quickly building a big following on the regional scene, and, as they said to us, … “The only way is up for us now, and that is the direction we’re going in!” See, we told you they’re enthusiastic!

THE EVIL LITTER – INJUNJO One of the most interesting things about The Evil Litter is their ‘Pop Art’ ruling – ensuring that every song is written within twenty minutes, creating a really raw feel to their writing. It is this immediacy that is apparent throughout the ‘Injunjo’ EP, and this rawness which makes it difficult to switch off and ensures that it is an entirely mesmerising set of tracks, that brings you in and keeps you there. The band have already reached a fair amount of acclaim through being involved in art projects like Anna Bean’s Animal House art show.

Their work is a constantly evolving sound, which is lead by their aforementioned way of writing – and by keeping everything current in this way, they create a sound and style that is very unique, blending a somewhat folk-esque storytelling within the song-writing but also with a more garage-rock feel to the composition, which, through being a little rough around the edges, re-emphasizes that raw nature of the tracks themselves. It is ever apparent that The Evil Litter are one of the most interesting bands on the scene right now, and though they aren’t the fastest when it comes to releasing material (their last release was July last year) this steady set of releases (with another scheduled for early 2018) already looks more promising for their future.

A RAY OF HOPE. THE RAYWELLS ARE BACK!

Yeah, this well-known and highly regarded Hull band have got their act back together again, which is great news for the local music audience who are into their style of no-nonsense, crowd-pleasing ‘get yer rocks off’ kinda rock ‘n’ roll! This, as-yet, unsigned five-piece band are alive and kicking again, with an exciting new line-up and some great new songs.

Credited for inspiring a generation of local Hull musicians to pick up an instrument and form a band, The Raywells established a loyal following in their home city first time around, gaining national exposure and performing sell-out gigs around the UK, with regular appearances on BBC radio and TV, ITV and Sky. After a successful tour of California, things went a bit ‘Pete Tong’ with their previous label (Platinum) so the four founding members took the decision to put the band on hold, explore the world and do their own thing for a while.

With his unique vocal range and an undoubted talent for being the star of the show, front-man Lee Pedge has remained a familiar figure on the local music scene, completing a number of solo projects and also a Music Performance degree!

After enlisting fellow Hullites Pat Gradwell (Guitars), Mikey Scott (Drums), Will Blake (Bass) and Tom Spowart (keys), The Raywells were thankfully re-born. All five members of the band are accomplished Hull musicians (all having studied at music college) - and the band’s forthcoming EP has been produced by drummer Mikey Scott who is a qualified sound engineer and music-producer at Fruit Trade Music in Hull.

Returning to the live circuit in 2016 with a successful acoustic tour supporting US singer-songwriter Alan Merrill under their belt, the band played alongside The Pigeon Detectives, Reverend and The Makers and The Hoosiers earlier this year, as part of the Hull UK City of Culture celebrations. Now busy rehearsing and recording ahead of a series of high-profile gigs and festivals throughout 2017, they soon will play the legendary New Adelphi Club in late-July or early August to celebrate the launch of their eagerly awaited Black Sun EP. Fans won’t be disappointed. The music remains original, authentic and from the heart. Each song maintains their unique identity - energetic vocals, raw guitar-driven hooks fused onto a solid backbone of bass and drums. The result - foot stomping rocking beats that elevate the soul, get you dancing and make you feel alive! So if you like your rock bands with plenty of spirit, passion and energy, then The Raywells are back to keep you happy! The sound is authentic - as real as it gets and the band always has a lot to say for themselves! They are typical ‘Hull’ and they are themselves. That’s The Raywells. Angels with Dirty Faces stars James Cagney as the ex-con “Rocky” Sullivan. Returning to New York’s ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ after serving three years for an armed robbery, Rocky is reacquainted with former school pal and partner-in-crime, Jerry (Pat O’Brien). Now a Catholic priest, the reformed Jerry becomes concerned that Rocky is exerting a bad influence on a gang of street tearaways played by Broadway’s ‘The Dead End Kids.’ As Rocky goes to war with his partner - the gangland lawyer Jim Frazier (Humphrey Bogart), Jerry embarks upon a personal crusade against underworld crime, ultimately bringing him into conflict with his friend.

Cagney had a hugely successful, but often fractious, relationship with Warner Bros and the film sees him give a more nuanced performance than the typical tough-guy role that he was typecast as early in his career. Angels with Dirty Faces was the first of only three occasions that he and Bogart appeared together on screen. The following year the pair joined forces again for the western, Oklahoma Kid, and another gangster classic, The Roaring Twenties. Enjoy the spectacle of these two Hollywood greats going toe-to-toe in this emotional crime melodrama.

Get Carter (Mike Hodges, 1971) Hodges’ revenge tragedy is one of the bleakest British gangland films ever made, encapsulating the seventies’ sense of desperation and hopelessness. When Michael Caine’s anti-hero, Jack Carter, travels from London to his hometown Newcastle to investigate the death of his brother, the film reveals the nation’s seedy underbelly with criminality, pornography and political corruption threatening society. Increasingly out of control, Carter’s retribution is swift and brutal as the film’s violence relentlessly builds towards its nihilistic conclusion.

Get Carter was based on Ted Lewis’ novel, Jack’s Return Home. Lewis studied at Hull Art School and several options for shooting were considered by the filmmakers with Hull being the director Hodges’ preference. However, Hull was deemed unsuitable and finally the producers opted for Newcastle as the setting for this gritty and realistic portrayal of Britain’s underworld.

Contemporary critics were concerned at Get Carter’s excessive violence and pessimism and the film was subsequently butchered for television. Today, it is regarded as a cult classic, ranked by the BFI at number 16 in a list of the greatest British films of the twentieth century and declared the greatest British film of all time in a 2004 poll by Total Film. (Get Carter also features a memorable score by Roy Budd.)

The Long Good Friday

Coppola was one of the leading directors in the New Hollywood of the seventies. Until Spielberg’s Jaws and Lucas’ Star Wars shifted the focus towards the blockbuster, New Hollywood’s articulate filmmakers - a product of the sixties’ counterculture – produced several provocative, intelligent movies, which threatened to transform US cinema.

(For anyone interested in the New Hollywood, I recommend Peter Biskind’s book, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: How the Sex ‘n’ Drugs ‘n’ Rock ‘n’ Roll Generation Saved Hollywood.)

Mackenzie’s thriller depicts the fall of Bob Hoskins’ London underworld boss Harold Shand over the course of one Easter weekend. As Shand’s “business” empire begins to unravel, the film becomes a comment on the political changes that were occurring across the country at the time The Long Good Friday was actually completed in 1979 but its release was delayed as Black Lion were concerned at its violent content and perceived pro-Irish republicanism.

It was eventually released to critical acclaim by Handmade Films.

The Long Good Friday is remarkably prescient, forecasting the Thatcherite phenomenon that would transform the nation’s political landscape. It was the first of several British films made during the eighties that equated Thatcher’s ideology with ‘gangsterism.’ (See also Peter Greenaway’s The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and her Lover). At one point, Shand and his henchmen round-up rival gang members, hanging them from meat hooks at an abattoir’s freezer.

Before the interrogation, Shand asks his captors, ‘What’s it going to be? Frostbite or verbals?’ A comic line that could have been spoken by that other entrepreneurial product of Thatcherism: Arthur Daley. Like Thatcher, Shand is a thuggish, racist little-Englander who, paradoxically, welcomes overseas business and supports the internationalisation of the British economy. Imagine Alf Garnett as a successful businessman, corruptly running London’s police and local authorities armed with knuckle dusters and shooters and you get the picture. I first saw The Long Good Friday on VHS as a teenager in the mid-eighties.

Three decades later, it has lost none of its relevance or power. For me, it is the greatest British gangster film ever made. It also has one of the most remarkable endings of any film I have ever seen.

Together, the two Godfather epics represent the Citizen Kane of gangster films with the complex and sprawling plot, cinematography, editing, performances and Nino Rota’s majestic score coming together to create an exquisite work of cinematic art.

One of the most stylish and influential gangster films of all time, Coppola’s take on the Mafia narrative has been mercilessly plundered by filmmakers. However, as a touchstone for the genre, for their consummate storytelling, atmosphere and elegance, The Godfather/Godfather II have never been surpassed. They are both masterpieces.

Mean Streets (Martin Scorsese, 1973) Scorsese was another New Hollywood filmmaker and Mean Streets – his breakthrough third feature –heralded the beginning of a hugely acclaimed career. Based on Scorsese’s formative years in New York’s Little Italy, the biographical detail - together with the location shooting - helped Mean Streets achieve its documentary-realist authenticity. This realism was too much for some commentators as the film - like The Godfather - was criticised for its negative portrayal of Italian immigrants.

Mean Streets is also the first of several outstanding films which saw Robert De Niro work with Scorsese. (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, GoodFellas).

De Niro plays the young Johnny Boy, whom small-time mobster Charlie (Harvey Keitel) tries to protect from the loan sharks and other enemies Johnny Boy has made. Both Keitel, as the avuncular Charlie, torn between feelings of responsibility for his young friend and his ambition to climb the mob hierarchy, and De Niro as the increasingly reckless Johnny Boy, are excellent in Scorsese’s influential urban crime drama.

Food & Drink Culture in Hull.

a little bit of Italy in Hull Da Gianni is one of our best known Italian Restaurants.

It’s owned and operated by Gian Franco Redolfi, who is originally from Bolzano in Northern Italy, on the edge of the Dolomites mountain range, but he’s been here for 38 years now, so he’s obviously completely ‘Anglicised’ of course. He speaks the ‘Hullie’ language perfectly and he completely understands (and loves) our sense of humour.

Yeah, he’s one of us now. A lovely guy and a he runs a lovely restaurant. He first came to Hull in 1979.

“I got my first job at the famous Pecan, which many of you will remember as our first real Italian restaurant in Hull, (in the building which is now Garbos and previously the Mint - Ed) and I worked there for 5 years as a Pizza chef and started to understand the culture and sense of humour, which is actually quite similar to the Italian one.”

He learnt how to cook, as many Italians do, from his Mam and his family, so he obviously knew how to create authentic Italian dishes.

“After this initial experience, I moved on to The Willerby Manor, becoming a main chef. Then, after a few years there, I decided to set up my own restaurant in 2002, which was called ‘La Perla’ and was based on Newland Avenue, (as many of you will remember - Ed.) I ran this restaurant for 12 years and built up a good reputation and a regular clientele. I loved La Perla, but my son was developing his own career as an Italian chef. He was running this restaurant, but he wanted to launch his own place. So I took over Da Gianni from him, in 2014, and he took over La Perla as his own place, which is now called ‘Gusto’ and is doing very well… probably because I taught him so well! (Ha ha!) “ Franco is a very down-to-earth and friendly Italian guy (similar to Hull people actually) and he describes his food style as this… “ I just enjoy creating traditional Italian food in the real authentic style. I’m not a fancy man. I want to present good, wholesome, fresh dishes in a non-pretentious atmosphere and see people enjoying themselves in the restaurant.”

We told you he was one of us didn’t we? A great guy and a lovely place. If you’ve already been there, you’ll already know this and are probably a regular, but if you’ve never been there before, you need get yourself there to experience a bit of ‘Little Italy’ in Hull!

Dick Whittington went to discover the streets of gold, but thankfully he decided to stick with Hull! The Whittington & Cat is another of Hull’s famous Traditional Victorian pubs…

It’s a family owned, contemporary food and lounge bar, with a storied history in Hull where people can drink and dine in a modern, refurbished and stylish Victorian pub. In fact all visitors are made to feel like they’ve been regulars for years by the hospitality of the Ralph family as they’re such friendly and ‘down to earth’ proper “Ull” people!

Gill and Tommy Ralph have been running the new Whittington & Cat Since May 2016. This ‘Mother and Son’ business duo have brought the Cat back to life! (Well they do say they’ve got nine chances don’t they?) They’ve got a wide and unique selection of continental beverages as well as fine premium wines & spirits and serve fresh home-cooked traditional English pub food in the stylish Lounge bar. The Cat is one of, if not, the most modern (yet ‘Old’) pubs in Hull, basically giving it a fresh start with their extensive refurbishment and the really welcoming atmosphere that they create due to their friendly engagement with all their visitors. The menu includes classic favourites such as Steak, Gammon, Scampi and Sausage & Mash but also additional fresh produce daily for their ever-changing ‘Specials of the Day’ which are created daily by their inventive chefs.

As regards the Beer, they said this; “Drinks-wise, we believe that the only reason to buy a second beer is the quality of the first! That’s why we use the new ‘Heineken UK Smart Dispense system’ with its modern technology that ensures our customers will never experience a bad beer whilst drinking at the Cat.”

What was the inspiration behind this whole revamp then?

Gill explains, “The Whittington & Cat has enjoyed a fine reputation in the past 10 years, unfortunately the floods of 2013 required the pub to be closed down for crucial repairs resulting in the loss of visitors of course. We took this opportunity to give the pub a whole new face-lift and we’re extremely proud of the outcome and to see our old cliental finding their way back to us, as well as many new faces who are now making our pub their regular visit.

The compliments on the refurbishment, from all of our customers, reassures us that we are not being biased by saying that we have the most stylish, modern and cleanest old Victorian pub in the entirety of Hull. That’s how proud of it we are!”

The Old English Gentleman, a Hull pub of distinction…

If you are native to Hull you’ll know The Old English Gentleman.

Even if you’ve never been in, or you forgot the name, you’ll know the building . It’s in a perfect setting in Hull, just behind the iconic Hull New Theatre and now also nestled alongside our new ‘History Centre.’

Leading down to it you pass St. Charles Church, a jaw-dropping building almost complete after a whole new face lift.

This sanctuary is something of glory and Father Michael is a gem in the jewel of the Church. Opposite was the old dancehall. Now newly-built flats, but respectfully keeping the original doorway. I know this as my Nana was a cloakroom girl there back in the day.

Just past it sits a pretty little garden and a fancy row of houses which I’ve always personally admired and wanted one for years!

Then the grand old building that is Hull New Theatre. Now if you’re from Hull, you’ve been many times and obviously saw the Panto. It had to be done. My Mam won’t thank me for telling you this, but she took us whilst ill, clutching a hot water bottle! Now that’s a Hull mother’s dedication to both the Panto tradition and to her kids.

Then to my main feature, The Old English Gentleman. There he sits proud, beautiful flowers outside and painted and decorated in fine splendour. Tables and chairs are outside with streams of flowers. It’s just adorable. The doors are on the corner of the building reminding me of Harry’s bar in Venice where Hemmingway drank.

A unique entrance leading your eye into the inside. The decor is impeccable, my jaw dropped and my first thought was “Why I have I never been in before?” I took to Facebook to let friends know I was there to have Sunday Lunch and so many people commented about having gone there for years and how Michael the landlord of the pub was a true gent.

Michael served the food, the plate was full of colour, textures and with that good old Sundry-Roast aroma. There was not just mashed-potato, but boiled and roast all on one plate. Now that’s what I call a good show and a super dedication to giving a proper meal. The beef was tender and, may I add, thickly cut. Not too much and not too little, served with extra gravy. Us Northerners love gravy, so not an eyelid was batted when the waiter turned up with a gravy boat as well. I might have smiled a little and hoped no-one else would take any. I know I’m bad, but seriously I don’t share food!

Happily, the variation of vegetables was blooming from parsnips, carrots, garden peas and broccoli, with a well placed Yorkshire pudding on the top for good measure. The whole meal and experience was an absolute joy.. and you can even stay there. That was like a red rag to a bull. Michael showed me the rooms and the views are spectacular. Sweet original sash windows and rooms that Michael clearly is very proud of. This part of Hull is totally reminiscent of our history. I strongly suggest you dine, drink and enjoy The Old English Gentleman. Sit outside of a warm sunny day and take in the beautiful vista, or go inside and enjoy the much-loved décor and range of good beers. Michael and his staff will give you the warmest Old English Gentleman welcome and now, my only question is; guys what are you all waiting for?

Firstly, they were not wrong. Michael is totally dedicated to bringing his customers the best. When I say the best I mean top notch! He’s a gentle, proud man who’s turned a pub from what I’ve heard had become a little drab into something of a must-go destination. There are photo’s on the walls of all the Celebs that go in there, after performing, which Michael told me is the only legacy left from previous landlords. It was quite a fun thing to see and talk over whilst our Sunday lunch was being prepared.

We sat around a very lovely candle-lit table, with lovely roses. I felt liked I’d stepped into a Dickens novel! Honestly it’s one of the most endearing pub’s I have ever been to. I am in no doubt I’ll bike there with friends and sit and enjoy this place over and over again.

It’s already arranged actually.

If you’ve previously heard the name of a retailer called Chance, you’re not mistaken they have relocated. The relocation was a very wise and brave move and is now based on Saville Street, in the heart of Hull’s city centre. Describing themselves as “Not quite a gift shop and not quite a gallery. A new way of shopping in the heart of Hull-shire.” You just know you’ll get a warm welcome when you shop there because it’s owned and run by very friendly people.

Chance is on a row of independent shops in this very well-known location within the City centre which has always had a great ‘local-shopping’ reputation and you’ll find them nestled in this row next door to the famous Reads Footwear. You’ll find it easily because it has a huge glass frontage with a display of some very cool furniture in the window to entice you in for a browse.

Personally, I love an independent who supports other independents and there’s a huge variation in style, concept and ideas. This variation and ‘uniqueness’ isn’t as freely found in the main chains and, although I’m not opposed to high-street outlets per se, I do feel they lack the heart and soul of the hand-made original products found in the independents like these.

There’s an abundance of choice and amongst them are some stunning examples of Hull memorabilia including a skyline with some of Hull’s more iconic buildings etched into a black card, postcards and other lovely Hull-themed gifts. All perfect to send out to friends around the country to help promote our special year.

I was particularly pleased to see interesting and inspiring things, not only for ladies and gentlemen but for children also. There’s a very sweet little corner and seating area so that children can play happily as you browse and buy. That’s a concept that a lot of parents will appreciate! There are some evocative and nostalgic children’s toy’s, that’ll even take you right back yourself.

I came across lamps, handmade with cute pom-poms and some totally unique ‘boo-hoo chic’ which, whilst a little retro, if you have Instagram, you’ll see that this taste in style is flourishing.

These pieces are right on trend!

Beautiful ceramics of all kinds are available, which reminded me of the beloved Polly Anna that used to reside on Princes Ave. I bought a cute little turquoise pot from there, that I still have, and Chance are now stocking that very same line! Any girl worth her salt in Hu5 back then, will know that this is a range of stunning pieces.

Gentle little animals are placed all over in different textures, styles and forms from wooden ducks with glasses and bow ties to tiny wooden carved birds. They’ve got something special for the Red, Red, Robins fans as well, although I am sure that’s all by accident, never-the-less they are adorably cute. (I just hope they’ve got some sort of ‘Airlie-Bird’ for the other lot as well! - Ed.)

That’s the tip of the iceberg with Chance though. There’s so much more to see and enjoy.

I could go on and on about this inspiring and unusual range of stock, including the contemporary jewellery, not unlike the things I have pinned on Pinterest.

In conclusion, Chance is a wholehearted paradise for gifts that are well made and well-chosen in a nicely thought-out environment where you’ll get a warm welcome whether browsing or buying. Check it out as soon as you can, on Savile Street, just off the main central square of Hull.

The Peoples Revolution.

Something isn't changing but something has definitely

changed…

One election result ended the rightward drift of this country overnight and heralded the arrival of a new generation, one tired of the cards being dealt against them. For as long as anyone can remember, politics has been the vanguard of the old. They vote, and so policy is geared toward them as the major parties vie for their attentions.

Not anymore!

Let no party write-off youth again, because it will be at their peril. Even on polling day the experts were discounting them, but the government had gone too far; they had stripped youth of hope and of opportunity; saddled them with debt; denied them access to housing; forced them into crappy jobs with no future; and this time youth had someone speaking their language, someone they trusted and who put his faith in them from the start.

It may appear a little ironic that is took a man in his late 60s to capture their hearts; but it isn’t. Jeremy Corbyn understood it from the onset; where Tony Blair had set about destroying the values of the Labour Movement in order to appeal to Tory voters, Mr Corbyn simply turned his back on them. He read the mood out here better than any other politician, better than any media analyst, and why?

Because he bothered to turn up and ask us.

What IS ironic is that Corbyn’s detractors actually served to make him stronger. Young people aren’t stupid. They can see mainstream media is saying something totally different to their social media and they have stopped believing it. So while the older generation remain slaves to the soundbites of billionaire tax evaders and their newspapers, the younger generation are happy to work things out for themselves through their peers and respected voices online- so they have become immune to propaganda.

What they saw in Corbyn was the ‘establishment’s hate-figure’ who stood his ground and didn’t flinch. A man whose politics have remained steadfast his entire political life, not blowing in the breeze to suit the current narrative. They saw a man who was strong, and had courage and conviction; and they asked the question which eluded so many.

If someone has strength, courage and conviction doesn’t that make them the BEST of leaders? The leadership election and subsequent challenge strengthened him. He travelled the length and breadth of this island speaking at rallies, listening to local concerns, increasingly mastering public oratory and behind the scenes massing an incredible sense of what people wanted and needed. This eventually became the Labour Manifesto, the most exciting political document of my lifetime, and proof that if you speak up, one man at least would listen.

Having been out there singing at political events for the last seven years I was in a privileged position. I could see the building blocks of that manifesto and how activists and campaigners, by raising their voices and fighting their various corners, had at last found voice. It is massively inspiring to bear witness to this process. Jeremy Corbyn has wrestled politics from the hands of a remote elite, and taken it back to the street corners and market squares where it first began; and this is his great gift. He has given politics back to The People.

He put his faith in us, and we returned that trust. A mutual meeting of hearts and minds. As a movement we said, if he has our back then we have his. I was moved to tears onelection night. I know the Tories will say we didn’t win. I’m sorry, but we did.

Driven by the youth vote, (and millions of us older Socialists Joe, don’t forget us! - Ed) and the faith of all those Mr Corbyn took the time to come and speak to, and listen to, this man polled more votes than any other Labour leader bar Clement Attlee. In doing so he destroyed the credibility of a Tory leader whose arrogant presumption that her opponent was a sitting duck has cost her a majority and left a government holed below the waterline and struggling to stay in power. It has made him untouchable as a leader and seen his previous detractors served with a generous portion of Humble Pie. It has broken the stranglehold of the mainstream media whose bile no longer breaks decent people, but serves to make them stronger.

And it has given us something, not to fight AGAINST, but to fight FOR. Mr Corbyn has taught us how to hope again.

No, don’t get too excited, it’s not the latest blockbuster international porn movie, it’s the arrival of the highly regarded coach, Leonid Slutsky from Moscow.

(Oh no, I bet the screeching “P.C. language police” are gonna accuse us of “sexism” now aren’t they? Pathetic innit.) Anyway, back to reality and ‘normal’ people….

Mr. Slutsky arrives with a great reputation and I think City fans should genuinely be excited about this appointment.

Leonid Slutsky is an internationally respected Russian coach. He’s been living with his mate Roman Abramovich in London for the past 6 months studying the English language, and English football, to familiarise himself with the feel and atmosphere, and to assess how his methods could be utilised here, so he’s obviously not a daft lad is he?. He’s already won the Russian Premier League 3 times with CSKA Moscow and then took over the Russian national team and he’s still only 46! The Allams have actually pulled another cat out of the bag it seems - or maybe, should we say, a Russian Doll out of it’s mould?

(Do you know what I really hate about those Russian Dolls - they’re so full of themselves aren’t they!) Let’s all give some respect to them for a change, they’ve obviously done their homework again (as they did with Silva) and this could turn out to be another masterstroke. And as ‘Sluts’ explained recently, they have given a guarantee to back him in his preferences on the market, which he was smiling about.

He’s a likeable chap and he seems to smile a lot actually, which is always a good sign in anyone, and he went on to describe this opportunity in England as...

“The most exciting time of his life.” He went on, “I’ve been watching English football for around 10 years now as it’s very popular in Russia, so I know the style.

I’ve worked with League-Champion players, international players and players of many different nationalities, so I understand football is football and I think I am ready for England using my experience and methodology.”

So it’s all sounding good innit. If his smiles translate into his on-field philosophy, we’re all gonna be laughing!

We don’t know what the finished squad or style of play is going to be yet, so this isn’t the issue to speculate on that, because the Summer has only just started and we don’t know how the final squad is going to look. We’re going to have to wait and see on that score and (unlike the previous writer of this column, who always seemed to make predictions) we can only hope for the best at the moment and look forward to a successful season. Best to just ‘Keep The Faith’ in The Tigers innit, even though we “Can die when we want.” (Apparently! ha ha.) Anyway, when we finally see his team and style, let’s just hope it’s a beautiful surprise and he takes us back up at the first time of asking - and then he really would be hailed as “The Super Slutsky!”

MONDAY 17TH Artlink – Visible Girls: Revisited, Anita Corbin.

Anita Corbin’s Visible Girls is one of the stand-out projects. An instantly recognisable set of images from 80s subculture that now, with the Revisited version, shows where a few of them are now, and how they have changed inbetween. This exhibition begins to touch on the gulf between what we want to be when we’re young and hopeful, and what maturity brings within that.

Corbin’s work originally revolves around the idea of friendship, and what being part of a subculture meant – something especially prevalent in the eighties as style became more forefront to the façade of a person, not a generational or simply aged-based predetermined choice.

The show contains then, a collection of classic imagery that is rooted in nostalgia, but also in the role played in empowering the woman as an individual.

Fruit – They Fuck You Up Your Mum and Dad Philip Larkin has always had a profound effect on Hull, not only because he lived here, but because his entire attitude as a poet seems to chime so closely with the attitude of Hull: There is a tongue in cheek honesty unlike no other – and, as it’s his birthday, his possibly greatest known masterpiece has been chosen as the title for Russ Litten and Steve Cobby’s new evening of improvised soundscapes and evening of spoken word. Improvised soundscapes may sound slightly daunting, but it promises to be ever interesting, creating a constant flow and interaction with the way the crowd and the night is going and feeling, making this into an absolutely one of a kind event.

City of Vultures brings some of the more underground acts to Hull’s shores, embracing the idea of fringe artists and that the main festival across the year will spawn more alternative acts into the fray, and into a space that is accessible to people. One of their most exciting upcoming shows is undoubtedly Darren Emerson, of Underworld, bringing a dark and eclectic mix to the atmospherically intimate space of Fruit alongside Bliss / Porky and hosted by Steve Cobby.

Darren Emerson’s work as one of the most prodigious songsmiths and DJs of his generation precedes him – Underworld were part of the Olympic opening ceremony back in 2012 and they have become sort of underground national treasures.

Hull Truck – A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian

The stage adaptation of the bestselling book, A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian is the story of a father and his daughters, and how the woman he is besotted with brings them inadvertently together: a family broken, unspeaking since the death of their mother comes together, eventually having to challenge their own heritage and face their past, rediscovering their relationships at the same time. The book is award winning – taking many different titles as well as being shortlisted for the likes of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2005, whilst the adaptation is taken charge of by Tanika Gupta, (also of The Waiting Room, The Empress, Anita & Me) - to create a stage version of the book which tells the same story in such an intense space.

Love them or loathe them, but The Libertines are arguably one of the most important, if not largest bands of the 2000s, and had an enormous effect on, not just British music, but also music in general, setting the standard for most indie music for the next ten or so years, and arguably bringing guitar and band-based music back to the forefront. Their return, after ten or so years broken up, sees them bringing out a new album and playing with renewed vigour, as a more mature, settled, four-piece that are now in control of their own destiny.

‘Life, Politics, Class & Religion!’

ALL OF THE TRAGIC EVENTS THAT SEEM TO BE CONSTANTLY HAPPENING AROUND US, MEANS IT’S BECOME ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TOTALLY ENJOY A MOOD OF CELEBRATION FOR HULL 2017….

We all know heartless Capitalism is the main cause of greed, oppression and wars in this world …but what about RELIGION? (Which actually operates in hand with it!)

Everything that’s wrong with the world, stems from the venomous views of Religious distortion along with Right-Wing political extremism manifesting itself in hatred for those who don’t fit in with their distorted ideals of how “everyone else should be.” It’s actually pure control and oppression. You are either one of them… or you are their enemy. On a “democratic” level, they employ “Hegemony” (which is insidious) where they make you believe that things are ‘how they are meant to be’ and get you to agree by ‘common consent.’ It’s a psychological control method which you may not realise is happening. The fascist rightwing idiots, (many in the USA btw) however, just hate anyone who doesn’t fit in with their opinion of what the ‘master-race’ should be and also the extreme fundamentalist religious bigots (like ISIS) hate everyone who doesn’t accept ‘their’ God, or their twisted doctrines. (‘Mentalist’ being the operative part of that word actually!)

The modern world really has gone mad hasn’t it? Look, as a TRUE Socialist who believes everyone is equal and everyone deserves equal respect within a tolerant society, I have to say that (as well as extreme capitalism) I am also totally opposed to the concept of ALL oppressive Religion. It only exists to control you and the way you live your life. However, I (as all Socialists should be) am totally tolerant of your spiritual beliefs as long as it is rooted in Love, Peace and Tolerance for anyone else whose views may be different to yours. Nothing wrong if you want to believe in your ‘God’ (that’s up to you) but only as long as your Religion does not make you hate or discriminate against others. The fact is this, most Religions are originally based in peace and respect for everyone else - and the majority of people (of all religions) ARE actually just like that. Good people. That’s great really isn’t it ? - But the problem is, the extreme fanatics from just about all of them, want to drag their doctrine to lengths of hatred and intolerance for anyone who doesn’t accept their religion, or their God, as the ‘real’ one and, (are almost always,) Sexist, Racist and Homophobic to boot!

In fact, having said all of that, I’d just like to say that (even though I’m not ‘Religious’ myself) I actually do like Jesus! It seems to me that he was the original Socialist. “Everyone should Love each other, everyone should care about each other and everyone should share things.” What’s not to like about that? (I also like Robin Hood and I think Santa is great too.) In these sensitive times I’m not frightened to write these truths, because, as many of you will already know, I am just expressing pure common-sense.

We need to aim towards a sharing, caring and tolerant world (within an atmosphere of fun and a sense of humour of course, - because if we all can’t have a laugh at anything - and each other- anymore, we’ll never get anywhere will we?)

The good news for us, is that a change is beginning to happen, right here in the U.K., with our new grass-roots working-class Labour Movement who have all seen through the media-manipulation and the indoctrination that has previously been foisted upon us all. We need to remove those selfish protectors of oppression, hatred and wealth, (Hi Mrs. May and the D.U.P.) storm the seats of power and finally install Jeremy and our Comrades into the positions where we can really start to change society for the better - and then hopefully spread these ideals throughout the rest of the world. Yeah, it’s a big dream of Love, Peace, Tolerance and Equality innit? But you’ve got to aim for it, because the closer we get, the better the world will become. Yeah, I know, I just sound like an old ‘hippie’ - but the truth is, I’m just a normal working-class Socialist - and there are growing millions of us. You may say I’m a dreamer - but I’m not the only one.

The cascade of Poppies that we recently hosted, spilling from a window of our beautiful Maritime Museum, was a beautiful thing that drew countless of thousands of people to consider and contemplate…

War, Hate and Conflict is NEVER going to be the answer for anyone. It’s always got to be Love, Tolerance, Peace and Humour. That should be the aim for everyone. We just all need to do our best to spread those sentiments.

Do your best, get on board the ‘Love Train’ and help to keep the MOMENTUM growing.
