MESSAGE FROM CHRISTOPHER NOE, PRESIDENT In this edition of my President’s letter, I have the impossible task of highlighting in just 250 words all of the great work being done by Temple Israel’s committees. My apologies in advance for not being able to highlight everyone’s efforts specifically. I would like to call special attention to two committees that have, in their own unique way, helped strengthen the bonds of our community during the past year. TI’s Green Team organized a farm share this summer. If you happened to be at Temple Israel on a Tuesday afternoon, you may have noticed farmer Jim and his fresh fruits and vegetables out on Nessel Way. A highlight of my summer was my weekly stop to pick up the constantly rotating selection of produce while meeting and chatting with fellow congregants and neighbors from the Longwood Medical Area. The food nourished our bodies, but the conversations nourished our hearts and minds.

In a herculean effort that is still ongoing, the Technology Committee has assisted in the implementation of a Congregant Relationship Management system, sophisticated computer software that replaces outdated technology for managing billing and other important membership information. While this project may seem very technical and esoteric, a necessary step to guaranteeing Rabbi Zecher’s vision that every congregant feels like he or she matters is to ensure that every congregant is known. Better technology will facilitate better human interaction within our community. I am very excited about these and other initiatives being pursued by our committees. It is a privilege and pleasure to serve as Temple Israel’s President.

Getting to Know

RABBI JEN GUBITZ It has been our great honor to welcome Rabbi Jen Gubitz to the clergy team and our congregation. Her work with The Riverway Project, Engage@TI (small groups), and Introduction to Judaism classes and programs have already elevated and invigorated what we do. We asked her some questions to get to know her better. For the past four years, you have served Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland, Massachusetts. You have had a very special relationship with that congregation’s cantor, Hollis Schachner. Why did you ask her to install you? Hollis is a supremely talented Cantor, with a beautiful voice that truly parallels her kindness, humor, and pastoral gifts. Hollis and I spent a great deal of time together the past four years. We often shmoozed and drank coffee during which she mentored me, listened to me, and modeled for me ways to approach situations. Most special, we sang together often. What has surprised you so far about Temple Israel? I am constantly surprised by how many ways we are connected and involved within the community and beyond it. The amazing talent of our congregants and staff continues to impress me. I am awed by the thought leadership of my clergy colleagues and the energy and curiosity for Jewish living by the Temple Israel community. Also, it amazes me how committed TI families are through many generations. I had hoped Temple Israel would be vibrant, but I never realized just how bright it would be. What is a text that influences your thinking about your rabbinate? One of my favorite midrashim is about the first night Adam and Eve spent outside of the Garden of Eden. Sitting in the dark, they experience what is called—Bein Hashmashot— which means “between two sunsets”. They are in a liminal moment—a moment which most of us are in all the time— as we are always between one thing and the next, standing on thresholds exiting and entering and journeying from different moments and stages in life, they are afraid and fear what will happen. But they create fire and subsequently the ritual of Havdalah is attributed to Adam. The fire/light

he creates sends this tremendous message of finding light and hope in dark moments. What have you found so far in the three months you have been here? Most of what I imagined and hoped for is actually true. I was very proud to lead High Holy Days with everyone. It was overwhelming in a wonderful way when Rabbi Zecher invited congregants in the sanctuary service up to the bimah for Ne’ilah and many came forward! There was a power I had not felt before in the arc of the High Holy Days when we were surrounded on the bimah by everyone. I was equally grateful to the administrative and maintenance staff who made it logistically possible for what felt like transformational work to take place. I also really love leading the Riverway Project and am grateful for the hard work by Rabbi Soffer before me. Soul Food Friday is actually as good as everyone says, and the participants buck the trends of statistics of Jewish millennial engagement. What do you want people to know about you that they may not yet know? I was an English major, and seriously considered pursuing graduate work in American Jewish Literature because I love getting lost in stories. As a result, writing sermons is a really important spiritual practice for me. I love poetry, creative writing, and puns. I grew up in a home where tremendous emphasis was placed on the value of fine and performing arts and Jewish values. My parents always invited the stranger, the orphan, and the widower to our Shabbat table —which I resented as a teen—but grew to understand and value as I grew up. Some of my first Jewish memories are playing in the choir loft while my Bubbe rehearsed or sang in the choir. Those roots drew me to rabbinic life. My first concerts were Sharon, Lois & Bram; and Debbie Friedman! These experiences plus Jewish summer camp are the roots of my rabbinate.

RENOVATIONS By Dan Deutsch, Executive Director Temple Israel is blessed with a 100,000 ft2 facility in the Longwood Medical Area. Our building was built in three different stages, each in a different era of our history.

Q: What is your favorite space in our building?

Every year, a significant portion of our budget goes towards maintaining and improving our physical infrastructure. These allocations are determined through our Building and Grounds Committee which boasts an active roster of ten volunteers led by Marc Maxwell. The committee works alongside our Facilities Director, Julia Pollard, to identify and prioritize projects that are needed to preserve our facility. Each member of the committee brings their expertise and together their experiences blend and direct the work that we complete. As Marc Maxwell puts it, “Building and Grounds spends a lot of time and thought on the systems of the building most take for granted. We keep the lights on, the heat and air conditioning working, the roof sheltering us from the weather. We have also been working on lessening our energy usage and carbon footprint for 25 years. We were recycling such materials before it was fashionable or topical.”

Our standard annual capital budget of $250,000 was supplemented with a few generous capital gifts which enabled us to invest in some much needed renovations.

A: Levi Auditorium. When we took a large room that wasn’t really usable for us today and turned time, it was one of the best improvements we could have made to our building. Also, since my background is in architectural history and the preservation of historic architecture, I’m delighted that we retained the original features of the room like the carved paneling. I’m proud that we won a preservation award for that project. — Dayl Cohen, Member of the Building and Grounds Committee HVAC Systems We replaced four of our HVAC units and upgraded to energy efficient units that will lower our energy consumption and lessen our carbon footprint. Our Building and Grounds and Green Team Committees will continue to work together to move us forward as we work to reduce energy consumption. Social Hall Noting that the Social Hall was looking aged, the Building and Grounds Committee worked to replace the old parquet wood floor that was damaged through years of heavy use. The committee looked at dozens of different materials and finally settled on a linoleum vinyl tile that looks like wood. The floor was put in during the late summer and has already seen a lot of activity.

Wyner Museum For years, the Wyner Museum hosted various exhibits that were created and curated by the Museum Committee. This year, Building and Grounds worked with the Museum Committee to reopen our windows and bring in comfortable seating, making the museum an ideal space to congregate and connect with each other. Library Temple Israel librarian, Ann Abrams, worked with volunteers to rethink the layout of the library, which is now open and more welcoming. Congregants are invited to stop in for a cup of tea, or take a few minutes to complete a communal jigsaw puzzle. The space still hosts the weekday minyan at 6:15 p.m. and will also be the backdrop for some of our adult education programs.

Sanctuary Ark A generous gift from Dr. Meryl LeBoff allowed us to restore the ark in the main Sanctuary. Hundreds of hours were spent by craftsmen who delicately repaired and retouched the leafing on the ark, bringing it back to its original glory. This project is an example of how Building and Grounds works to preserve our building, choosing to restore our precious ark rather than upgrading or going for a new look.

Q: What do you like most about our building? A: How the building represents our community it holds. Built over decades, as our community changes, our buildings have changed. Designed by different architects in each phase of its evolution the building represents changing styles of architecture just as we have changed as society, observance and our practices have evolved. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Marc Maxwell, Chair, Building and Grounds Committee Families with Young Children & Technology Lab Through a generous capital gift from the Mayer family, we were able to transform Room 105 into a perfect space for programming geared towards families with young children. This is now the location for weekly classes for our youngest members of the community. Additionally, we were able to take our old computer room and invest in making it a flexible space which we are now calling the Technology Lab. We will be able to view movies or take out our new collection of iPads and laptops, allowing this room to adapt and meet our ever changing daily needs. www.tisrael.org/insight | 617-566-3960

My twin daughters, Lily and Molly, began at the FJECC at age 2 and made friends there who are still their friends today. They have even recently reconnected with some of their preschool friends which has been such a nice thing for them. I too, made friends there who will always be there for me. When my daughter, was in the Red Room, she had the job of cleaning the paint cans - something she didn’t particularly like to do, but she always did it and she was pushed a little bit out of her comfort zone, which is important to do at any age. The FJECC was the place where my children could begin to explore their Jewish identities and ask questions that would always be answered by their amazing teachers. We send condolence notes following the death of a congregant or someone close to a congregant. We will make a call following a death to make a personal connection. We are creating a growing list of our members who have volunteered to cook or buy a meal for a congregant who is ill or in need. We reach out to our college students by sending a box of

REFORM JUDAISM IN ST THE 21 CENTURY

Jews join Jewish communities for different reasons. Some want a place to pray, a place to nurture their souls, and find deeper meaning. Some want a place to learn, a place to ask the hard questions, and connect with ancient history and tradition. Some want a place to go, a place where they are recognized, and a place to find connection. When we join a Jewish community we find that we are part of something larger than ourselves. The amazing blessing of Temple Israel is that being a part of this community means that we are part of something even larger than this large community—we are a part of Reform Judaism, the largest Jewish denomination in the United States. We also have many close, personal connections with leaders in the Reform movement, including Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union of Reform Judaism, and Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Since Jews gained citizenship in the post-enlightenment world, Reform Judaism has been at the forefront of creative change. Believing deeply in the importance of personal autonomy, in every generation Reform Jews have “made the old new and the new holy,” (to paraphrase former Israeli Chief Rabbi Rav Kook). Reform Jews have an ever-present awareness of our role in the world. This necessitates the prioritization of justice work, the creation of inclusive communities and an approach to Torah study that blends the richness of modern scholarship and the passion of our modern values. Temple Israel’s justice work, innovative spirit and inclusive community do not emerge from a vacuum—we are born from the best of Reform Judaism. On December 9th and 10th, we have the honor of welcoming Rabbi Aaron D. Panken, PH.D. as our Burstein Scholar-in-Residence. Rabbi Panken is the President of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute (HUC-JIR), the institution that trained most of

our clergy, and a thought leader in the Reform Movement. NESIYA SUMMER PROGRAM

This past summer, I traveled through Israel for five weeks on a program called Nesiya, which brings together American and Israeli Jews from all different religious backgrounds. We explored Israel, our own connection to Judaism, and fortified a unique community. I learned about myself in ways that I previously would never have thought were possible. On Nesiya, we kept Shabbat. I had never done this before, and was a little skeptical of how connected I could feel. I fell in love with Shabbat and found it incredible how life pauses and the community or city is just present and enjoying the moment. Keeping Shabbat in a city where not a single car drives and the entire city is keeping it with you was a very different experience than it would be to keep it at home. For me what was so powerful is that everyone, both those whom you know and strangers, take a break to be present and to enjoy Shabbat.

Nesiya was not just a typical tourist trip through Israel, and having Israelis as participants not only gave a different perspective to the trip, but also helped me to see Israel through the eyes of Israelis. I 100% recommend Nesiya as an incredible program for anyone considering going to Israel, and I would be more than happy to speak in more detail.

Every activity we did caused you to not only question your own opinions and beliefs about the topic, but they demanded that you put your entire life out on the line for everyone to know. Because of this intensity, it created a new type of friendships. I found myself having very deep conversations with people before I even knew basic details about their life. I never thought I would have found a community in such a short amount of time, but the program that Nesiya facilitates ensures that this happens. I had heard from people how much I would love Israel, but I did not think it was possible to feel such a strong connection to a country so quickly. Despite this being my first time in Israel I felt at home, and I felt as though I belonged. To consistently be surrounded by so much history from your people, everywhere you go, and to know that you will not be the last of your people at the given was an incredible feeling. Now, I find myself yearning to be back in Israel. I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand it before and I do not quite know how to explain it, but there is something about being in Israel that really makes you feel alive and part of something bigger www.tisrael.org/insight | 617-566-3960

Early last spring I had a “get-to-know-you” cup of coffee with Carol Targum. During the course of our conversation we discovered we were both interested in prayer: What is it? How do you pray? Where and when? And what’s the point of prayer? We had enough questions that we thought we’d go to a pro. We talked with Rabbi Zecher, who told us to talk with Rabbi Jacobson, who was also interested in exploring prayer. At our meeting with her, we discovered she’d been exploring prayer…forever! Most recently, while a student at Hebrew College, she was part of a group who met in a staircase! Which right now, writing this at 3:00 a.m., brings up the image of Jacob’s ladder, planted on earth, reaching to heaven, with angels going up and down. We decided to gather some like-minded people to begin an exploration of prayer, and so the Tefillah Group was born. We met six times. Each session was led by two people, in the chevrutah style of study. The leaders met a time or two or three before their session in order to explore together their own ideas of prayers.

The results were amazingly varied! One session focused on an intellectual approach to prayer; another explored chanting; another looked at one prayer then gave us the opportunity to interpret the prayer through art, creating our own midrash! Being good Jews, we learned we needed more study of the traditions of prayer and ways other people are exploring this, which has led to an exciting series of guest speakers who will offer their own explorations and understandings this fall. Sundays will offer the Spiritual Practice Lab, trying prayer through yoga, meditation, singing, and other paths. The Tefillah Group opens its doors to the entire TI community. We have six busy teams: Fundraising, Housing, Household Setup, Understand Assisting Services, Employment, and Welcome/Integration. SENDING SPARKS OF LIGHT GODWARD By Rabbi Matthew V. Soffer The phrase “tikkun olam” (“Repairing the universe”) may sound cliché, but for the 16th century mystics, it provided an answer to a question that is no less perplexing to us moderns than it was to them: why does evil exist? These kabbalists created an extraordinary etiology, mythologizing a new creation narrative— one that tells of a critical moment when God had to make room to create the material universe. God shrunk Godself into vessels of light. But the light could not be contained, the vessels exploded and shards with sparks of light spread all across this newly created world. Most, but not all, of the light returned to God. The broken pieces of the vessels accounted for the creation of evil, that is, everything wrong and ungodly in the material world we inhabit. According to this myth, we had a good shot at fixing it— but Adam and Eve messed that up, thus ingraining evil into our social universe. The mystics who popularized this sacred myth, however, were not so quick to devalue the power of mankind. They believed the story of Creation is ongoing, and that the very purpose of our existence is to do things that restore light back to its Source: they called these actions mitzvot (our Jewish obligations). To this day, the obligation to “repair the world” is a part of Temple Israel’s “DNA.” Whether through face-to-face compassionate acts to bring comfort and healing, or through organizing ourselves with other communities to enact broader, impactful laws that repair social illnesses, ease suffering, and enable our communities to prosper, this is how we pursue the obligation of tikkun, this is how we chase after the light and send it Godward. As renowned community organizer Saul Alinsky taught, “all organizing is reorganizing.” This year, fully cognizant of the overwhelming social perils plaguing society today, we

have reorganized, by establishing a single umbrella within our community to unite our rodfei tikkun (“pursuers of repair”), including those organizing within our Tent of Justice (“Ohel Tzedek”), our leaders in TI Cares, our community’s compassion network, or those who are pursuing a righteous impact on society through any one of our ongoing initiatives and campaigns that repair our world. We are calling this, Tikkun Central. We will gather periodically to share the ongoing efforts and progress our members, to meet others eager to “get stuff done,” and to continue fueling our efforts with the Torah of Tzedek (justice) and Chesed (compassion). While the kabbalists indeed passed down an inspiring story, the most empowering part of all, the part that no one can deny, the part that is as miraculous as Creation and palpable as the ground on which we stand is this simple truth: not a single person in our community lacks the ability to repair. Everyone has a place in Tikkun Central. Uniting as one (“community”) through Tikkun Central, may we write our own chapter in the history of Creation— one that future generations can embrace with pride and hope.
