MESSAGE FROM

THE BOARD PRESIDENT

How awesome is this place? And I mean that with the full understanding of the double entendre of both the spiritual and the non-spiritual sides of Temple Israel. We recently gathered for the High Holy Days, which gave us a chance to celebrate and reflect. I think we have much to celebrate this year with a pretty fantastic set of services, including the new Sage Service that I had the good fortune to attend, and the many other variations for all ages and preferences. We had 10,000 in attendance at Temple Israel and another few thousand viewers from the live stream.

for our children and ourselves. The wonderful sermons we just heard help us reflect on this new year. Credit for the terrific experiences we all enjoyed is shared by the clergy and staff who work together to ensure that the hard is seamless. Temple Israel is awesome in so many ways – we even have an exhibit about this in the Wyner Museum! We hope you have many chances to experience the awesomeness in the months to come.

We also have much to reflect on as we begin 5778. We turn our thinking to caring for ourselves and for those around us. We crave and then satisfy the need for learning

MESSAGE FROM

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I would like to thank all of our clergy, staff, and volunteers for a terrific High Holy Day experience this past fall. Many months of planning and preparation enabled us to come together as a community and pray. If you are one of the estimated 10,000 who joined us over the High Holy Days, then you know just how impactful communal worship can be. We can also be proud that for the eighteenth year, our congregation donated over 7,000 pounds of food to the Greater Boston Food Pantry. Our Yom Kippur drive was once again the largest single day drive for their pantry. As a community we continue to find exciting ways to live Judaism together through discovery, dynamic spirituality, and righteous impact. This December, we are fortunate that the URJ Biennial is coming to our city. Please join us at the Hynes Convention Center from December 6-10 for the URJ Biennial. While there are costs associated with attending, the URJ has been able to open up services for free (note: you will need to preregister through the

4

URJ.) Please join us as we bring in Shabbat with 5,000 other Reform Jews, a worship experience that will be extraordinary. Register online at www.urj.org/biennial. We have so much going on at Temple Israel; be sure to check our calendar for a full listing of events, classes, and activities. Included in our offerings are many opportunities to take a class through our Center for Adult Jewish Learning at Temple Israel. Come and be inspired as you study and discover with other Temple Israel members. If you are looking for more ways to get involved with our community please feel free to reach out to me directly at ddeutsch@tisrael.org.

Why Your Support Matters: Your Guide to the Friends Annual Fund Every year you are asked, perhaps even several times, to make a contribution to the Friends Annual Fund, and every year you make a donation or at least consider it. Either way, you may be wondering what exactly the Friends Annual Fund does and what we mean when we say we need your support.

What is the Friends Annual Fund? The Friends Annual Fund provides the essential resources needed to sustain our extraordinary educational opportunities, our innovative and timely social justice initiatives, and our extensive and inclusive spiritual experiences. Temple Israel is more than just a place; it is a community of people who are dedicated to living Judaism together by making meaningful, lifelong connections. Your support will ensure that we can continue to inspire all who gather here as we forge our path ahead to meet the ever-changing needs in our world today.

What does that mean in practice? Since the beginning of this fiscal year (July 1, 2017) the Friends Annual Fund has made the following opportunities possible: • Organization of an interfaith service with more than 1,700 people in attendance in response to white supremacist rallies throughout the United States • The launch of a new High Holy Day service focusing on personal reflection and alternative prayer • The expansion of our discovery and learning opportunities for people of all ages with The Village (Families with Young Children), The Center for Adult Jewish Learning, and The Tent • Collaboration with other organizations to affirm our commitment to several social justice issues such as environmental causes and immigrant rights • Delivery of honey jars during the High Holy Days to members who have experienced a loss in the past year

What is the goal of the Friends Annual Fund? We have two goals for the Friends Annual Fund; a participation goal of 100% of member families making a contribution of any amount by June 30, 2018, and a financial goal of $450,000. This amount represents 7% of our annual operating budget. Dues and program fees do not cover all of our operational needs, and therefore we rely on the Friends Annual Fund to ensure that we can cover costs such as utilities, building maintenance, and administrative costs for the support and engagement work happening at Temple Israel.

Does my gift really matter? YES! As a committed member of Temple Israel, you know how important these opportunities are to those in our community and beyond. Without the Friends Annual Fund, we cannot sustain or expand our impact in these important areas. Showing your commitment to the greater Temple Israel community through a gift to the Friends Annual Fund makes us a stronger and more connected congregation. Please consider making your donation today at www.tisrael.org/friends-annual-fund or by contacting Julie Gal-Or, Director of Development at julieg@tisrael.org or 617-566-3960.

A look back on the

#10Days10Ways * Why did we do this Ten Days of Awe/Racial Justice Reflection campaign, and why during the High Holy Days? The process of reflection is built into the Jewish calendar. During the ten day period between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we are instructed by our tradition to look deeply into ourselves and conduct a Cheshbon Ha’nefesh, an accounting of our soul, to examine how we may have missed the mark in the past year. While each person must face their individual actions, our prayers — ashamnu, bagadnu (we have sinned, we have transgressed) — require us to recognize and take responsibility for our collective failures. Only through honest self-examination as to whether our actions align with our values can we turn, repent, can we do t’shuvah. In early September, the Racial Justice Initiative asked our community to consider focusing on racial inequality as a lens through which we examine our lives during the Ten Days of Awe. As a framework, the team compiled a series of readings, podcasts, art, cartoons, music, and suggestions for experiences and actions designed for individual and communal reflection on issues of racial inequality, privilege, discrimination, and injustice. There are two reflection processes; one for adults and one for children. Although the Days of Awe are over, it is not too late to participate. All of the suggested experiences and actions are still available online at www.tisrael.org/tikkun-central. To learn more about the Ten Days of Awe/Racial Justice Reflections or the Racial Justice Initiative, please email Tali Puterman at tputerman@tisrael.org.

Day 5 recommended participants explore two Boston neighborhoods, Back Bay and Dudley Square, by choosing a starting point and traveling between the two on the Orange Line. The Wexler family, while exploring the Dudley Square neighborhood, met mayoral candidate Tito Jackson on the street. Gabriel Wexler, age 11 recalls Mr. Jackson explaining that when the average black person living in Dorchester dies, they only pass down $8 but when the average white person from Back Bay dies, they pass down $247,000. Every time Jews pray in community, we say Aleinu – it’s incumbent upon us to continue the work of creation. For centuries, human industry has disregarded the environment we are spiritually tasked to “till and tend.” Now, we find ourselves in a critical moment, when our practical activities need to align with our deepest values in order to protect and preserve the world we have inherited. Join us November 17-19, 2017 as we learn about the crisis, consider important solutions, and wrestle with our responsibility.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17 AT 6:00 P.M. QABBALAT SHABBAT – FEATURING PETER FOX-PENNER Peter Fox-Penner is a Professor of Practice in the Questrom School of Management and the Director of Boston University’s Institute for Sustainable Energy. His research and writing interests are in the areas of electric power strategy, regulation, and governance; energy and climate policy; and the relationships between public and private economic activity. He is the author of Smart Power, a book widely credited with foreseeing the future transformation of the power industry now used and cited all over the world, as well as other books in this area. He also teaches courses on sustainable energy and electric power in the Questrom School of Business. In addition, he is Chief Strategy Officer of Energy Impact Partners, Academic Advisor to The Brattle Group, and on the Advisory Board of EOS Energy Storage.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 9:00 A.M. - 7:00 P.M. DAY OF LEARNING AND ACTION Beginning with an environmental Torah Study, we will spend the day together learning and connecting. Following lunch, there will be plenary sessions with Reverend Mariama White Hammond of Bethel AME Church and author Mitchell Thomashow. The day will conclude with Havdalah. Mitchell Thomashow devotes his life and work to promoting ecological awareness, sustainable living, creative learning, improvisational thinking, social networking, and organizational excellence. In January 2016, Thomashow accepted a fellowship at Philanthropy Northwest. The fellowship promotes awareness of sustainability, community, and place. The emphasis is on building social capital, intellectual leadership, and organizational effectiveness in promoting sustainability, community engagement, ecological awareness, diversity and inclusion, place-based solutions, public education, and the arts. His latest book, published in March 2014, The Nine Elements of a Sustainable Campus (The MIT Press) provides a framework for advancing sustainable living and teaching in a variety of campus environments.

Rev. Mariama White-Hammond was born in Boston, MA in 1979. The child of two preacherdoctors, Rev. Mariama grew up with an understanding that God calls us all to serve our fellow man. She serves on the ministerial staff at Bethel AME Church where she is the Minister for Ecological Justice and the Interim Youth Pastor. In May 2017 she graduated from Boston University School of Theology with a Masters of Divinity. Rev. Mariama challenges the Christian church to embrace a more radical understanding of the life and mission of Jesus Christ. She believes that the church must be responsive to issues like street violence, mass incarceration, climate change, AIDS, food security, and human rights. She is actively engaged on social justice issues ranging from immigration policy to fair wage issues. She is a leader in the Massachusetts Moral Revival, the local branch a national faith-based intersectional movement for justice led by Rev. William Barber. She was the MC for both the Boston Women’s March and Boston People’s Climate Mobilization. Rev. Mariama is very committed to engaging the faith community, and particularly Black church on climate change and ecological justice issues. She speaks throughout the country and serves on both local and national boards and committees like the New England Grassroots Environmental Fund, Clean Water Action and Green the Church. We often share stories of the innovative programming happening at Temple Israel. But, our community is more than a building. We are proud to offer many pathways into our community, and more than ever before we are working to reach people where they are, in heart and in body. STUDY, HIKE, EAT, REPEAT: MARCH 1-11, 2018 FAQs for the trip of a lifetime to Israel WHO IS THE TOUR GUIDE? We don’t have just any tour guide; we have the premier educator, par excellence. Uri Feinberg lived in Boston with his family for three years and directed our Religious School. You will find him accessible, funny, engaging, wise, and a fabulous leader and teacher! This trip is designed as a group experience, and in particular, a Temple Israel experience. One of the explicit goals is that through shared experiences we will either create new relationships or enhance pre-existing ones. WOULD IT BE OK IF I’VE NEVER BEEN TO ISRAEL BEFORE? The trip was not necessarily designed as a first time trip. We won’t be going to some of the sites people frequent the first time like Masada, Ein Gedi, Galilee. If you’d be disappointed that you didn’t get to see those sights, then possibly the trip is not the right one for you. On the other hand, if the study elements and exploring Jerusalem are of interest, then by all means join us. Also, there is the possibility to supplement the trip by arriving a few days early or staying a few days longer. That way you could visit some of these sites. HOW MUCH WALKING WILL THERE REALLY BE? The trip was designed, in part, to connect the Israel and Jerusalem reflected in texts, ancient or contemporary, with the living breathing urban environment of Israel and Jerusalem today. Experiencing the spontaneity of the streets is a critical component of this trip. Walking and/or hiking will be a component every day. Most days will be a leisurely walk through a neighborhood in town. There are two hikes – quite different from each other. Neve Shalom to Latrun is a beautiful nature walk of about 4 kilometers. It is covered with trees and is listed as easy. Sataf Springs is a walk down a hill (the bus lets you off at the top and picks you up at the bottom). The hills are terraced and the walk is on a path that has steps. Of course, you could chose to stay on the bus and meet us at our destination if it’s too far. HOW MUCH STUDY WILL THERE REALLY BE? Our time at the Hebrew Union College (HUC) and in and around Jerusalem engaged in text study is the complement to walking/hiking. In terms of class sessions, the mornings are set aside for study with HUC faculty. We will also have time to meet some of the upcoming rabbinic and cantorial students and share in some of their morning prayers/t’filah. We have a included fun session on Hebrew slang and colloquialisms as a window into Israeli culture. The campus is striking in its location, has a fascinating history, and is one of the loveliest buildings in Jerusalem. The trip is designed not only to engage us in study but also to engage us from the perspective of the progressive values of the Reform movement. We want to showcase the rich educational and intellectual resources within the Reform community, as well as HUC’s role as a voice for liberal progressive values in Israel. All levels of Hebrew are welcomed, including none. WHAT DOES “LUNCH OR DINNER ON YOUR OWN” REALLY MEAN? There are so many wonderful choices that it will be challenging to decide! We will receive suggestions of where we can eat and we will try some of them out in smaller groups. Rest assured that you will never be left alone (unless, of course it is your explicit choice) for a meal. You will be responsible for paying for your meal. WHERE CAN I CHECK OUT THE ITINERARY? Go to ArzaWorld.com, type “Zecher” in the search bar, and then click on the name of our trip: “Study, Hike, Eat...Repeat! A Unique Temple Israel trip to Israel. Led by Rabbi Elaine Zecher and Chairs Marc Maxwell, Carol Michaels, and Mitchell Shames.” I’M INTERESTED/I HAVE QUESTIONS! WHAT NEXT? Please email Rabbi Zecher’s Executive Coordinator, Rachel Daniels at rdaniels@tisrael.org to register or let us know of your interest. We look forward to experiencing Israel together with you!
