MSc Project Management

Success story

I am from Nigeria, a country known for its vibrant culture, resilience, and strong sense of community. The slogan “Naija no dey carry last” (“Nigeria never comes last”) is more than just a saying—it embodies the spirit of perseverance and excellence that defines us.

Before moving to the UK, I worked with local and international partners in the development sector, implementing projects focused on economic development and employability. However, following the outbreak of COVID-19, managing these projects became significantly more complex. This exposure to the limitations in delivering high-impact projects drove me to pursue further studies to bridge my knowledge gap.

On May 6 2023, as my beautiful family accompanied me to the airport, I felt a wave of mixed emotions. Excitement filled my heart as I embarked on this new journey, but there was also a bittersweet feeling of leaving my loved ones behind. Moving to the UK was a significant step—one fuelled by ambition, hope, and the

determination to make them proud.

As the plane took off, I knew I was stepping into a life-changing experience, ready to embrace the opportunities ahead at UWS London.

Studying at UWS London was an enriching experience. The faculty members were highly knowledgeable and always supportive, ensuring we built a strong theoretical foundation while also applying real-world case studies to our learning.

‘‘The program allowed me to develop a global perspective, particularly through collaborations with classmates from diverse cultural backgrounds.’’

I have always loved meeting new people and learning about different cultures, and this experience broadened my understanding in ways I never imagined.

I have so many fond memories about my journey at the UWS London campus.

I remember the late-night coursework discussions during the Change and Leadership (CML) project. Our group worked tirelessly on Microsoft Teams, often well into the night, with one or two members always dozing off during the meeting! We still laugh about it to this day.

As the group leader this experience gave me a masterclass on leadership, communication, and teamwork.

But of all the memories, the moment I will never forget is the moment I saw my final result and realised that I had been awarded an MSc in Project Management with Distinction. I paused for a second, took a deep breath, and said to myself, “It paid off!” Every late night, every challenge, and every sacrifice had led to that moment. Fast forward to September 18 2024, I graduated! Walking across that stage, dressed in my graduation gown, holding my certificate, I felt a deep sense of pride.

My job search in the UK was far from easy. Like many others, I initially struggled to understand the UK hiring process and adapt my CV to employer expectations. There are opportunities in the UK, but you need patience, persistence, and a strategy to win. From my research, I discovered that recruitment could take two to three months, so I began applying for jobs halfway through my dissertation, ensuring I would at least secure interviews soon after completing my program. There were moments of self-doubt, especially after receiving rejection emails. But I refused to allow setbacks to define me. I strongly believe that a closed door is not a rejection but a redirection to something greater. And guess what? I secured three interviews and landed my current job at Leicester City Council just two months after finishing my programme.

A key lesson I learned was the importance of having the right mindset. I kept reminding myself: I am the value. I am worth it. Like a salesperson who believes in their product, I knew I had to sell myself confidently. I saw every application

and interview as an opportunity to sell my skills, experience, and the unique value I could bring to the organisation. If I don’t believe in myself, why should anyone else?

The next thing is skill mapping. I assessed my current skill set, past work experience, and the industries I had worked in, constantly asking: How do my existing skills apply here?

Understanding how my expertise aligned with job requirements helped me position myself effectively in the market.

‘‘Another crucial factor was seeking support. Speaking to a career coach and utilising every available resource on campus helped refine my job search strategy.’’

UWS offers extensive career resources, including CV-writing sessions and mentorship programme, which I took full advantage of.

Beyond technical skills, my time at UWS London prepared me to succeed in a fast-paced and diverse workplace. The critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills I developed have enabled me to adapt quickly, take initiative, and add value to my team at Leicester City Council.

Looking ahead, I see massive opportunities for growth. I am actively expanding my skill set, networking with professionals, and positioning myself for future leadership roles. Watch out for me!

To all students starting this journey, don’t just go through the motionsmaximise the moment. Time doesn’t just fly when you’re having fun; it flies when you’re studying here. Stay ahead of the game by reviewing your course materials before class and make the most of student support services for your academic success - you will thank me later. Most importantly, enjoy the process. The journey may be intense, but the rewards will make it all worthwhile.

Study tips Career tips

In addition to skills and knowledge, you need to be intentional about investing in relationships within and outside your organisation. If opportunities are like doors, people are the key.

Success story

‘‘
From UWS London to a thriving career in the UK.’’

I was born and raised in Pakistan, and my journey to the UK began with a dream of expanding my horizons and gaining an international education.

I moved to the UK in May 2022, excited about the opportunities that awaited me here. The UK is a land of endless possibilities, and I knew it was the perfect place to shape my future.

I graduated with a MSc Project Management from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), London campus in 2023. The degree was a stepping stone toward my career, and I was eager to see how it would help me thrive in a competitive global market.

Studying at the UWS London campus was an enriching experience. The university offered a dynamic, multicultural environment that helped me broaden my academic and personal perspective. I found the faculty to be supportive, and the resources available were invaluable in my academic journey.

UWS gave us so much to remember as we had so many great moments that were both inspiring and fun. But there was this one time I had a real ‘oops’ moment: I accidentally wandered into the wrong lecture hall, sat down, and happily stayed there for a good 10 minutes before it wasn’t my class! So I did what any confused student would do, I made a dramatic exit and dashed to Dr. Mehtab’s lecture. But, just my luck, Dr. Mehtab was standing at the door like a wise guardian of the gates, somehow managing to be both the kindest and scariest person at the same time. I had to give my best “Sorry I’m late” apology to the class.

Finding a job in the UK after graduation was a journey in itself. It wasn’t always easy, but the process taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance and adaptability. I learned that patience is key, and every rejection brought me one step closer to the right opportunity. The key takeaway was the importance of networking and continuously refining my CV to highlight my unique skills.

After several months of applications and interviews, I secured a position at NG Bailey as a building services engineer in Canary Wharf. What set me apart was my ability to showcase how my skills, academic background from UWS, and personal passion all aligned perfectly with the role. Although it was a part-time position, I was thrilled as it was relevant to my field. I worked there for a few months, but I didn’t stop. I kept applying for other opportunities and continuously updated my CV with the experience I was gaining on-site.

‘‘I was fortunate to land a job immediately after finishing my degree.’’

I began in a temporary position with the potential to become permanent and successfully progressed to a permanent role after completing my probation period.

My degree from UWS London played a critical role in achieving my career goals. The curriculum was designed to not only impart technical knowledge, but also develop soft skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving. This holistic approach gave me an edge in the competitive job market and made me feel prepared to tackle the challenges in my field.

Today, I work as a Mechanical Engineer at BGIS. Since joining, I have been fortunate enough to be part of a great team. My managers and colleagues are very supportive and promote a healthy environment. Every day, I’m excited to contribute and take on new challenges that help me grow professionally.

Looking ahead, my goal is to advance to a Senior Project Manager role. Before transitioning into project management, I wanted to gain foundational experience, which is essential for effectively handling projects in a specific field. I am excited about the opportunity to continue growing in my career, develop new skills, and make an even greater impact in my company.

Study tips

My advice to help students thrive in their studies: First, stay organized! Keeping track of your assignments, deadlines, and exams will help you manage your time effectively and reduce stress. Next, start building a network early on to connect with professors, peers, and industry professionals. These relationships can open doors for future opportunities and offer valuable support. Lastly, stay curious and embrace the joy of learning. Be eager to explore new ideas and seek knowledge, both inside and outside the classroom. This mindset will not only enhance your academic journey but will also shape you into a well-rounded, lifelong learner.

Career tips

Remember, setbacks are not the end of the road, they are stepping stones that bring you closer to your ideal opportunity. Rejections happen to everyone, and they simply mean you’re one step closer to finding the right fit for you. When applying for jobs, make sure to tailor your CV to highlight the skills and experiences that best match the position. Personalizing your approach can make all the difference. Lastly, always keep learning. The job market is constantly evolving, so staying updated on trends and new skills will help you stay ahead of the curve and ready for whatever comes your way.

Project Manager at R J Emmanuel

MSc Project Management

Success story

My name is Chibuzo Doris Ikeh, and I am proud to share my journey as a Nigerian who embraced the challenge of moving to the United Kingdom to pursue my dreams.

In January 2021, I arrived in this vibrant country to begin my master’s degree in Project Management at the University of the West of Scotland’s London campus. Through the support and resources offered by UWS, my life took a transformative turn that shaped my future.

When I stepped onto the UWS campus, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and potential. The academic foundation provided by the university was nothing short of exceptional. The curriculum was robust, immersed me in project management principles, and equipped me with the skills necessary to thrive in a competitive environment. The supportive faculty members were always willing to lend a helping hand, guided me through the complexities of my studies, and encouraged me to believe in my capabilities.

Beyond academics, the cultural experience of studying in London was treasured. Immersed

in a diverse city, I learned to steer different perspectives and developed a global mindset, which has become a crucial asset in my professional life.

During my time at the university, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in several live projects assigned by our lecturers. These practical experiences were instrumental in that they allowed me to apply theoretical concepts in real-world scenarios. Working on these projects deepened my understanding of project management principles and enhanced my problem-solving abilities. Each project pushed me to think critically and work collaboratively, qualities that are essential in my role today.

One of the most significant challenges I faced was my initial fear of public speaking.

‘‘However, the supportive environment at UWS encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone.’’

Presenting our projects in front of my peers and faculty played a crucial role in overcoming this fear. I learned how to convey my ideas, an essential skill for a project manager who must communicate effectively with clients and team members.

In April 2022, I proudly graduated with my master’s degree, a testament to my hard work and the unwavering support of my university. But my journey did not end there.

To succeed in your studies and career, prioritize personal development by setting clear goals,

continuously learning, and maintaining your well-being.

Build a strong network by nurturing relationships, utilizing social media, and actively participating in professional organizations.

Lastly, cultivate resilience by embracing failure, staying adaptable, seeking support, and maintaining a positive mindset.

Following my graduation, I actively sought opportunities to apply my newfound knowledge. This was when I discovered the Association for Project Management (APM). Eager to connect with the professional community, I became an associate member without hesitation. This allowed me to attend various networking events where I met industry professionals. Engaging with those professionals and participating in discussions on current trends in project management equipped me with a solid understanding of what UK employers look for in candidates. The blend of hands-on experiences and professional exposure created a unique skill set that made me a strong candidate in the job market. With a well-crafted CV in hand, I launched into my job search. My efforts paid off as I secured several interviews, and after one year of several interviews, I landed my current job.

My achievements thus far have been rewarding and transformative. As a full-time project manager with R J Emmanuel, work has become not just a job but a passion. The company’s commitment to innovation and excellence perfectly aligns with my aspirations.

In addition to my role at R J Emmanuel, I am volunteering with APM as the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead (EDI) for the APM London Regional Network. This role has been

particularly fulfilling as it resonates deeply with my values. Advocating for a more inclusive project management community. I’m proud to be at the forefront of these initiatives by planning networking events. In celebration of Black History Month, I took the opportunity to write a blog titled The Importance of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Project Management, which was featured across all the APM’s social media platforms. This created a wonderful ripple effect, allowing the message of EDI’s significance in project management to reach a broader audience. You can check out the blog here: https://bit.ly/4exJm53.

Furthermore, I am also a member of the APM Women in Project Management (WiPM) Interest Network, which has opened doors to a vibrant community of women who uplift and inspire each other. I help organize events at the awardwinning WiPM conferences with over 850 project professionals, including attendees from various sectors and career levels to network, learn, and discuss key topics impacting women in the profession. It’s gratifying to see the positive impact these gatherings have on women in the industry. I participated in a podcast called Diverse Routes into Project Management. The episode aimed to inspire upcoming project professionals by sharing diverse experiences and pathways into the field, emphasizing the incredible value that varied backgrounds bring to project management. You can listen to the podcast here: https://lnkd.in/dfmc32kg.

I was also featured in the APM Winter Project Journal 2023, where I shared my biggest lessons from 2023 and what the past year has taught me about my work and career.

Looking back on my journey, I realize how crucial my time at UWS London was to my success. The professors there not only imparted knowledge but also instilled a sense of confidence. Their mentorship encouraged me to push my boundaries and pursue initiatives that seemed daunting at first. Graduating from UWS was not just an academic milestone, it was the foundation on which my professional journey was built.

Success story

Growing up in a rural community in Ghana, I was surrounded by challenges that many would consider limiting. In a place where opportunities seemed few and far between, and where the societal orientation often placed constraints on the dreams of young girls, my father will always emphasize that ‘‘

The journey of a thousand

miles begins with a single step

’’

.

This wisdom became my guiding principle. I knew that to break free from the constraints around me, education was my path forward; one step at a time. And as I grew up, I understood that no matter how distant the dream seemed, each small action would bring me closer to it.

This determination to pursue a better future led me to pursue an MSc Project Management at UWS London, where I was given the opportunity to not only gain a world-class education but to

step into a world of limitless potential. Simply, my time at UWS London was nothing short of transformative.

‘‘At UWS London, I was inspired to think beyond the confines of conventional approaches.’’

I cultivated the values of innovation, creativity, and out-of-the-box thinking, and it was these very lessons that became the foundation for everything I’ve achieved since.

Motivated by my experiences and the desire to create meaningful change, I developed a deep passion for influencing positive transformation in every way possible. This drive led me to be selected as a Commonwealth Youth Leader serving over 1.5 billion young people across the Commonwealth, extending my reach and impact on a much larger scale. I also lead digital projects for the Commonwealth Youth Council, where I continue to influence change, implement impactful projects, and help shape the future of youth engagement across the Commonwealth.

Back home in Ghana, the knowledge I gained from UWS played a pivotal role in helping me scale up my non-profit organisation and projects to be more effective and efficient. I have been able to streamline our processes, optimize resource allocation, and measure the impact of our initiatives in ways that were previously

unattainable. This has allowed us to execute projects more successfully and reach more young people in the country.

My organization focuses on transforming the lives of young people in rural communities, aiming to turn around their fortunes and give them the same opportunities I was fortunate enough to receive. We have undertaken several impactful projects, including educational programs that provide school materials, exercise books, and dustbins to schools. We’ve also worked on creating cervical cancer awareness, implemented mentorship programs, and launched tech upskill programs for the youth. These are just a few of the ways we are working to uplift the next generation, ensuring that they have the tools they need to succeed.

Looking back, I can confidently say that all this progress and impact is a direct result of the inspiration and knowledge I gained at UWS. The university not only taught me the importance of pursuing education but also instilled in me the ability to innovate, think critically, and lead with passion.

In my professional life, I currently work as an IT Project Manager at UWS under the UWS Graduate Programme, where I continue to apply the skills I’ve learned. My passion for innovation and forwardthinking has allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the growth of my department, even in the short time I’ve been there. UWS has shown me that with the right mindset, anything is possible.

Study tips

At UWS, I quickly realized the importance of breaking tasks down into manageable steps and prioritizing them based on deadlines. Whether it was coursework or project deadlines, staying organized helped me stay on top of everything.

Asking questions is key to understanding. I wasn’t afraid to ask for clarification or challenge ideas. This curiosity allowed me to dive deeper into study materials and explore beyond the surface which enhanced my learning.

Collaboration has been one of the most valuable skills I developed. Whether in group projects or team discussions, learning from others and sharing ideas broadens your perspective and helps you approach problems in creative ways. I realised that when I take care of my well-being, I perform better in all areas of life, so I took breaks when I needed to and pursued hobbies which helped me to maintain balance and to stay mentally clear and productive.

Hurria Fatima

PCB Design Engineer at Allen & Heath

MSc Project Management

Success story

Originally from Pakistan, I embarked on my academic journey at UWS in May 2023 and successfully completed my MSc in Project Management in September 2024.

My time at the UWS London Campus was filled with opportunities for learning, growth and personal development. The support and guidance I received from my dedicated, knowledgeable, and supportive professors instilled strong confidence in me during my job hunt in UK job market. Beyond academics,

‘‘UWS offered also vibrant social opportunities and one of the best aspects of the London Campus was the TEG Club.’’

Its events provided an excellent platform for socializing with peers, nurturing meaningful connections, and enhancing the overall campus experience.

One of my fondest memories at UWS London Campus is my very first day when I attended a TEG Club event and met my friends for

the first time. What made it so special was how effortlessly we connected, as if we had known each other forever. Everyone around us assumed we had been friends for years, but in reality, we had just met that day! The instant bond we formed set the tone for an incredible university experience. Soon after, we created a study group, collaborated on projects, and supported each other throughout our academic journey. That day wasn’t just the beginning of my university life, it was the start of lifelong friendships and unforgettable experiences.

When I moved to the UK, I brought with me over six years of experience as a PCB Design Engineer. However, I aspired to transition into leadership roles, which required strengthening my project management skills. This motivated me to pursue further learning and refine my approach to the competitive UK job market.

One of my first challenges was adapting my resume to align with UK hiring standards, as the competition here was much stronger compared to my home country. Within a week of arriving, I proactively set up accounts on job platforms like Indeed, CV Library, and Glassdoor, while also updating my LinkedIn status to ‘Open to Work’ to increase my visibility to recruiters.

A key strategy that significantly boosted my job search was carefully analyzing job descriptions and tailoring my CV for each application. I ensured that my resume included relevant keywords from the job postings, making it more likely to get noticed by applicant tracking systems and recruiters. This approach proved highly effective, as I started receiving interview calls within just two weeks of my job hunt. I feel truly humbled to say that I secured a job as a

PCB Design Engineer at Allen & Heath in July 2023, while I was still in my first trimester of my MSc Project Management. What set me apart in the competitive job market was my confidence and extensive previous experience of six years.

Indeed, securing a job in the first trimester of my MSc was a significant milestone, but it also brought a tough decision: whether to continue my studies or focus entirely on my new role, as my workplace was outside London. However, my primary reason for coming to the UK was to pursue my MSc at UWS, and I was determined not to give up on that goal.

After seeking guidance from my Program Leader, support from my professors, and advice from my family, I made the decision to continue my MSc while working full-time. Managing both commitments was undoubtedly challenging. I often had to catch early morning trains or flights to attend classes and return the same day, all while balancing coursework and office responsibilities.

Despite the difficulties, it turned out to be the best decision I ever made.

‘‘I enjoyed the journey of studying and working simultaneously, and the support I received from both my university and my workplace made all the difference.’’

My professors were flexible with my occasional late arrivals, while my manager, HR team, and colleagues were incredibly accommodating, allowing me time off when needed for assignments or travel. This experience reinforced my belief in

perseverance and time management, and I am truly grateful for the support system that made it possible.

My MSc in Project Management at UWS London Campus greatly contributed to my career growth. The program refined my project management skills and boosted my confidence in the competitive job market of UK. The industry-focused curriculum, hands-on learning, and constant support from my professors helped me develop a strong professional foundation.

One of the most valuable aspects of studying at the London Campus was the diverse student community. Engaging with peers from different cultural and professional backgrounds broadened my perspective and improved my teamwork and communication skills. These interactions prepared me for the dynamic work environment in the UK. Indeed, choosing UWS was one of the best decisions I made, as it equipped me with the skills and confidence to excel in project management and leadership roles.

Emigrating to the UK for studies and career opportunities can be exhilarating as well as demanding. For students, managing time is the most important thing—integrating coursework, part-time employment, and social activities needs careful planning. Furthermore, interacting with peers from other backgrounds can nurture learning and form beneficial connections.

Right now, I have been working for almost one and half years in Allen & Heath. The things that I have learnt from my workplace are invaluable. I have been working on critical and optimized PCB layouts that are helping me in continuously learn. The field of PCB design is constantly evolving,

and I’m excited to be part of this journey, shaping the future of electronics.

While working full-time, I aim to explore new opportunities that align with my longterm career goals. I also look forward to contributing more to the industry by sharing my experiences and mentoring aspiring professionals. The journey so far has been rewarding, and I am excited about the challenges and growth that lie ahead.

Career tips

For job seekers, it is imperative to update your CV according to UK market requirements. Moreover, customizing applications by adding keywords from job postings improves the chances of getting noticed. While sites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and CV Library are excellent resources for job searching, networking is equally significant. Finally, success is achieved through persistence, so remaining proactive and always learning will make the journey easier and more fulfilling.

MSc Information Technology

Success story

Success is a journey, not a destination, and my journey has been one of perseverance, dedication, and a constant thirst for knowledge. From my early education to establishing my own company, every step has been a learning experience that has shaped me into the entrepreneur that I am today. My story is a testament to how higher education, particularly my time at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) London Campus, helped me lay the foundation for a successful business.

I knew early on that my passion lay in technology, and this motivated me to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Lancaster University in the UK.

Studying at Lancaster University provided me with a solid foundation in computing principles, programming, and systems design. I had always dreamed of studying in London, a city known for its vibrant culture, diverse opportunities, and excellent educational institutions. This aspiration led me to pursue a master’s degree

in Information Technology from UWS London. The decision to study at UWS was one of the best choices I made for my career, as it not only deepened my knowledge of IT but also prepared me for the world of business.

At UWS, I had the opportunity to work with esteemed faculty members and collaborate with peers from different backgrounds. The university’s curriculum was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

‘‘I was exposed to emerging technologies, data management, and software engineering, all of which proved instrumental in shaping my entrepreneurial mindset.’’

One of the most impactful aspects of my time at UWS was the emphasis on real-world problem solving. The projects and assignments were structured in a way that encouraged innovation and practical application of concepts. Additionally, the university’s strong industry connections provided me with insights into the latest market trends and technological advancements.

Upon completing my master’s degree, I was at a crossroads: should I enter the corporate world or take a leap of faith and start my own venture? My time at UWS had instilled in me the

confidence and entrepreneurial spirit necessary to pursue my dreams. I decided to establish my own business and founded Mii International Consultants, a limited company specializing in immigration and visa consultancy services.

Starting my own business was both exciting and challenging. I had to navigate the complexities of setting up a company, understanding legal requirements, and building a client base from scratch. However, the knowledge and skills I had gained during my masters program proved invaluable. The business management insights, coupled with my IT expertise, enabled me to leverage technology for streamlining operations and offering top-notch consultation services.

Mii International Consultants quickly gained traction, thanks to a combination of strategic planning, digital marketing, and a commitment to excellence.

Reflecting on my journey, I can confidently say that my time at UWS London played a pivotal role in my success. The university equipped me with the technical knowledge, business acumen, and confidence to step into the world of entrepreneurship. The diverse and dynamic learning environment at UWS prepared me for the challenges of running a business in a competitive landscape. Make the most of every opportunity that you have to learn and grow.

Moreover, I recommend that students take advantage of the networking opportunities at UWS.

These allowed me to connect with like-minded individuals, mentors, and industry experts. These connections provided valuable guidance and opened doors to new opportunities. The university’s focus on innovation and real-world applications gave me the practical experience needed to navigate the complexities of starting and managing a business.

Looking ahead, I aim to expand Mii International Consultants by integrating advanced technology solutions to further enhance client experiences. I also aspire to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs, sharing my experiences and insights to help them navigate their own journeys to success.

Success is not merely about achieving a goal but about the continuous pursuit of growth and innovation. My journey from studying at UWS London Campus to establishing Mii International Consultants has been a rewarding experience, filled with learning and accomplishments. I am grateful for the education, mentorship, and opportunities that helped shape my career.

‘‘For anyone aspiring to turn their dreams into reality, I encourage you to embrace education, take calculated risks, and never stop learning.’’ The possibilities are endless, and success is within reach for those who dare to pursue it.

To begin, I would like to say that my success is not based on pure talent but on commitment, determination, hard work, and a willingness to achieve greater heights. There were times when I experienced failure and struggled to start again.

‘‘But my determination to achieve goals changed my life story.’’

I have faced serious failures in my life. But I never stopped working hard and dreaming bigger, and that is why I am here to share my success story with you.

I was always academically strong, and I completed my bachelor’s degree in Computer Applications. However, I ended up doing some unrelated jobs after my studies. Later on, I got an opportunity to work for a global technology company that provides IT and network services. I served there for more than seven years and was promoted twice, but my keen desire and passion never allowed me to sleep peacefully. I always wanted

to achieve more in my personal and professional life. However, nothing was easy, especially while juggling the extra responsibilities of being a wife, mother, and firstborn to my parents.

There were moments where I wanted to quit, as success didn’t come overnight, and too many unsuccessful moments can get you down.

‘‘

Despite all the failures, unsuccessful attempts, and hardships, I decided to continue.’’

I decided to lead a life where my family could feel proud of me. Thinking of the moment when my parents could say, ‘This is our daughter’ with a great smile and a heart full of pride kept me going.

I moved to the United Kingdom and did my MSc in Project Management at UWS. I was able to secure a good job in the NHS alongside studying, and I brought my family over after five months of coming to the UK.

By the time I graduated, I was still eager to advance my career. I tried hard to secure a permanent job in the NHS and I attended a lot of interviews, and often the feedback I received made me feel insecure. After many interviews, I was able to get a Band 4 Admin job, but the department withdrew the job post just a few days before my actual start date. I felt devastated, but determined, and I put my

focus on my career. Once again I attended some interviews, but this time I was offered a job which was one band lower than the job I had applied for. I decided not to give up and accepted the offer.

Working in a band 3 admin role is not what I had dreamt of, yet I considered this as a stepping stone. I started attending more interviews, and I was able to get a Band 4 position within three months at the same NHS Trust.

‘‘I worked hard and gained more knowledge and experience. I networked

with

different types of colleagues to develop my communication and interpersonal skills.’’

I attended short-term training courses and developed my skills every day. I tried hard to develop my management and leadership skills. I took the initiative to conduct meetings and engaged myself in learning new things. I put myself into the process of improving my skills to become more efficient. At the same time, I started attending interviews for higher bands. My master’s degree in project management paved the way to attend interviews for management job roles.

Again, things took unexpected turns, and the interviews I attended hadn’t given me a successful ending yet. I kept on trying hard, and after 141 job applications, I finally became a Deputy Quality Lead in the NHS, which was two bands higher than my previous job role.

In 2019, I moved to the UK in search of better opportunities for education and work. In May 2021, I began my journey toward earning a master’s degree at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), which turned out to be an incredibly enriching experience.

The university provided a dynamic and multicultural environment that broadened both my academic and personal perspectives.

As a student at UWS, I received great support from the faculty and staff. I also cannot overlook the invaluable resources that enhanced my learning journey.

‘‘Additionally, the cultural experience of studying in London was truly rewarding.’’

Being immersed in such a diverse city helped me navigate different perspectives and develop a global mindset—an essential asset in my professional life.

Moreover, as the capital and largest city in the UK, London offers a wealth of career opportunities.

I graduated with an MSc in Project Management from the University of the West of Scotland (UWS)London campus in 2023.

‘‘This

Graduating at a time when the economy was just beginning to recover from the disruptions caused by COVID-19 made job hunting particularly challenging. It took me four months of relentless job applications and interviews. I lost count of how many unsuccessful applications I had submitted. After months of hearing, “We are sorry to inform you that you have not been selected,” I finally secured my first job—and the rest is history.

My degree from UWS London played a pivotal role in my career progression. The curriculum not only provided technical expertise but also honed essential soft skills such as communication, leadership, and problemsolving. This well-rounded approach gave me a competitive edge in the job market and prepared me to tackle industry challenges with confidence.

Study tips

To study effectively you should create a schedule, set goals, and stay organized. Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and hydration to maintain focus. Minimize distractions by studying in a quiet place and using apps to block interruptions. Consistency and smart strategies will help you retain information better and improve your performance.

Career tips

If I were to give career advice, I would summarize it in three key areas:

1. Prioritize yourself: You are your biggest asset. Always take care of your well-being, know how to market your skills, and tailor your CV to your target job. Be well-spoken and demonstrate why hiring you is a valuable investment for any company.

2. Build a strong professional network: Connect with a diverse group of professionals, leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn, and actively engage in networking opportunities.

Success story

The world of technology is vast, complex, and ever evolving, but for those who are passionate and determined, it offers boundless opportunities. My journey from a student in Pakistan to becoming a Senior Salesforce Developer at Allianz Technology UK and then at TCS UK exemplifies the power of hard work, continuous learning, and unwavering commitment.

My story serves as an inspiration to others who aspire to make a mark in the technology field, proving that with the right mindset and perseverance, one can overcome challenges and transform dreams into reality.

Born and raised in Pakistan, my love for technology began at an early age. Growing up, I was always fascinated by how software and

applications shaped the world around me. The idea that a few lines of code could drive powerful systems and solve real-world problems captured my imagination. This fascination led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a decision that set me on the path to becoming a prominent figure in the technology industry.

During my undergraduate years, I was exposed to a wide range of programming languages, software development practices, and the core principles of computer science. It was here that I developed a deep understanding of the fundamentals of technology and gained the technical skills needed to embark on a career in software development.

My decision to pursue a master’s degree in Information Technology from the UWS London was a transformative one. In 2021, I moved to the United Kingdom to further my education and gain exposure to a world-class academic environment. The transition to London wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was a deliberate step towards refining my technical expertise and understanding the global landscape of IT.

The master’s program at UWS offered me the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies, explore emerging trends in information technology, and collaborate with peers and professors who were passionate about shaping the future of tech. The diversity of perspectives in the program enriched

my learning experience, and the combination of practical, hands-on learning and theoretical knowledge gave me the tools needed to succeed in a competitive industry.

Throughout my time at UWS, I not only strengthened my existing skills in software development but also gained exposure to specialized areas such as cloud computing, data analytics, and IT project management. Graduating in 2022 with a master’s degree in Information Technology, I was ready to take on the professional world with the knowledge, skills, and confidence I had gained throughout my academic journey. However, the road ahead was not without challenges.

After completing my master’s degree, I faced the challenge of entering the competitive job market. Despite the challenges, my academic background and having more than 7 years of experience in Pakistan I still feel that my passion for Salesforce development set me apart from many candidates. With more than 10 certifications in Salesforce, DevOps and middleware tool Dell Boomi, I was more confident in my own abilities.

In December 2022, I secured a position as a Senior Salesforce Developer at Allianz Technology UK, one of the world’s largest financial services companies. At Allianz, I was entrusted with responsibilities that included designing, developing, and implementing Salesforce solutions for clients across a variety of industries.

While my career at Allianz Technology has been marked by many successes, it has not been without

its challenges. Like many professionals in the tech industry, I faced the constant pressure of keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies and staying ahead of the curve.

In addition to technical challenges, I also navigated the complexities of working in a global, multicultural environment. Allianz Technology operates in multiple countries, and collaborating with colleagues from different cultural backgrounds was a new experience for me. I embraced this diversity and used it as an opportunity to improve my communication skills, foster teamwork, and expand my perspective on problem-solving.

Beyond my professional accomplishments, I am passionate about giving back to the tech community. I am committed to inspiring the next generation of IT professionals, particularly young women, to pursue careers in technology. I believe that diversity and inclusion are key to driving innovation and fostering a more vibrant and inclusive tech industry. As a mentor, I take great pride in helping others navigate their careers and encouraging them to believe in their potential.

‘‘My success story is a powerful reminder that anything is possible with hard work, dedication, and a willingness to keep learning.’’

My journey from Pakistan to London and from student to Senior Salesforce developer is a testament to the power of education, passion, and resilience.

Saeideh Eshraghi

Electrical Design Engineer at Imenco

Success story

I am Saeideh, an ambitious and determined young woman. I stand here today in the very place where my journey began, with nothing but a dream. It is hard to believe, but just 18 months before taking my first step in London, I couldn’t speak English, my second child had just been born, and I was juggling two jobs while my husband was building his business in Iran.

Living in England, especially in London, studying and working here had always been my dream. But achieving it was far from easy.

‘‘Learning a new language, balancing my career, and caring for my two young children was just one part of the situation. Yet, despite the challenges, I enjoyed it because I was stepping onto the path I had always dreamed of.’’

Despite this there were moments of doubt, fear, and times when success felt impossible.

But in the end, when I finally arrived in London, I realised something powerful, if you truly want something and are willing to work for it, you can achieve it.

My new life started in May 2022, when I arrived in the UK from Iran, with nothing but a suitcase full of hopes and dreams. I always had dreamt of studying at university and building a career in a place full of opportunities. The UK was that place, and I knew this was my chance to make a fresh start.

I enrolled in University of the West of Scotland (UWS) London campus to study my MSc in Project Management. The first days were not easy. Everything around me was new and unfamiliar. I was far from home, and everything— from the culture to the environment—felt strange. But what I didn’t expect was how quickly the kindness of the people at UWS made me feel at home.

Professors and my classmates, who came from different cultures and backgrounds, became the first people I met in this new world. They were not just colleagues; they were friends who supported me and helped me to adjust to this unfamiliar place. I remember that in one of the classes we were given the chance to talk about ourselves and share our dreams. That opportunity to express my aspirations helped me gain confidence in the world that often felt overwhelming.

UWS had a warm atmosphere. I felt I was part of a community that cared about my success. It wasn’t just about learning project management lessons; it was about learning how to adapt, how to work with diverse teams, and how to grow in ways which I had never imagined before. It was a place where I could thrive, and for that I will always be grateful.

After graduating in May 2023, I faced a new challenge: finding a job. The process was far from easy. At first, I struggled. I put in hours of hard work and job searching, but the results were not what I expected. And on top of that, I had to take care of my two little daughters and work weekends in a job that wasn’t related to my field.

Finding the right opportunity sometimes felt impossible. I didn’t have a full-time work permit at first, which delayed my chances. But I didn’t give up. By the end of July, I got my first interview with my new full-time work permit, but it didn’t go well. Still, it was a step forward, and I was determined to keep learning and pushing myself.

My breakthrough came in October 2023 when I landed a job as an Electrical Design Engineer, much closer to my experience in oil and gas. It wasn’t easy. The transition was hard. UK standards were different, the software was unfamiliar, and I had to adapt to new working processes. But I embraced these challenges. I worked hard to learn new skills, adjust my knowledge to UK standards, and keep pushing through the confusion.

What helped me was the foundation I built at UWS. The skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and

communication were invaluable in my new job. I began to feel more confident in my abilities, and slowly but surely, I started to settle into my role.

Now, I am working in the aviation, oil and gas sectors, gaining more experience every day. I’ve faced many challenges, but each one has helped me grow. Some days, I feel like I’m starting over, especially when learning new design processes or working with new software.

‘‘But I keep pushing forward because I know this is how I’ll move to the next step in my career.
’’

Looking ahead, my goal is to move into a project management position. I’ve learned that the best project managers are not just experts; they are leaders who understand the challenges their teams face. They guide others, solve problems, and bring out the best in everyone. I want to be that kind of leader. To do that, I know I must keep learning, especially in engineering and communication, and continue to build my knowledge in processes that make success in my industry.

The journey from Iran to the UK wasn’t easy, but it’s been worth every challenge. The lessons, the people, and the experiences shaped me into who I am today. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I’m even more excited about where I’m headed.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: no matter how hard the path seems, every step takes you closer to your dreams. Don’t be afraid to keep going, even when things get tough. The challenges will make you stronger, and in the end, they will be the steps to your success.

Sangita Dubey

MSc Project Management

Success story

My name is Sangita Dubey, and I come from India—a country that beautifully embodies the spirit of “unity in diversity.” Growing up in such a culturally rich and diverse nation, I was always fascinated by different perspectives and ways of life. This curiosity and adaptability proved invaluable when I moved to the UK in 2021 to pursue my MSc in Project Management at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS), London Campus.

Moving to a new country for higher education was a life-changing decision, and the experience at UWS London exceeded my expectations in every possible way.

‘‘The university provided me with an incredible platform to interact with students from around the world.’’

This broadened my perspective, refined my interpersonal skills, and helped me understand different approaches to problem-solving.

One of the most valuable aspects of my time at UWS London was the guidance and support from my professors. Their expertise and mentorship played a crucial role in shaping my understanding of project management. The university’s teaching approach focused on real-world applications, and the group tasks assigned to us were particularly transformative. These tasks required strategic thinking, teamwork, and adaptability—skills that are essential in today’s competitive and ever-changing job market. The dynamic learning environment challenged me to push my boundaries, build resilience, and develop a proactive approach to problem-solving.

However, adjusting to life in the UK was not always easy. As an international student, there were moments when I felt homesick and missed my family and friends. During those difficult times, the faculty and staff at UWS London played a crucial role in making me feel welcome and supported. Their empathy and encouragement made a significant difference, ensuring that I remained focused on my studies. Their unwavering support helped me navigate the emotional challenges of being away from home and reinforced my determination to succeed.

Through my studies, I also discovered a deep interest in sustainability and the circular economy. This newfound passion stemmed from the engaging discussions and thought-provoking lectures delivered by my professors. Their enthusiasm for the subject was contagious, inspiring me to explore how sustainability principles could be applied in various industries.

The job search process in the UK was both an exciting and challenging phase of my journey. As an international student with no prior UK work experience, I faced numerous obstacles when applying for jobs. Initially, securing interviews was difficult, but I refused to be discouraged. Instead, I took on part-time jobs to familiarize myself with the local work environment, enhance my communication skills, and gain valuable professional exposure. I also dedicated time to tailoring my CV to align with UK industry standards, ensuring it met the expectations of recruiters. One of the key lessons I learned during this process was the importance of perseverance.

‘‘Rejections were inevitable, but they were also learning opportunities.’’

I made sure to research every company I applied to, understanding their values, mission, and work culture. This effort not only helped me tailor my applications but also demonstrated my genuine interest in potential employers.

I eventually came across a job opportunity through a LinkedIn advertisement. Interestingly, the role was in an engineering company—an entirely new field for me, given my background in interior design. Despite this, I was determined to embrace the challenge. My passion for learning, my ability to adapt, and my commitment to building strong professional relationships enabled me to secure the position. I focused on linking my previous experiences to the responsibilities of my new role, which helped me develop a deeper understanding of the industry. My willingness to step out of my comfort zone and continuously upskill myself

played a crucial role in my success.

The journey to securing this job was not smooth. I faced multiple rejections, including from positions where I was confident in my qualifications and capabilities. However, I never allowed setbacks to define my progress. It took me four months of persistence before I finally received the longawaited email: “Congratulations on your new role and welcome onboard.” It was one of the most rewarding moments of my life.

One of the most valuable resources at UWS London was the professional support services offered by the university. Experienced mentors provided feedback on my CV, refining it to meet industry standards and improving its chances of passing initial screenings. Additionally, career counselling sessions with my professors introduced me to career paths I had never considered before. Their insights boosted my confidence and helped me navigate the job market more effectively.

I initially joined my current company as a Project Management Engineering Intern, a one-year role that provided me with hands-on experience in managing tasks, resources, and project deliverables. My dedication and ability to drive positive results did not go unnoticed. The higher management recognized my efforts and offered me a permanent position as a Project Manager. I was also entrusted with managing new Product Development projects, an exciting opportunity that has allowed me to contribute significantly to the company’s growth.

Looking ahead, my goal is to continue upskilling myself and obtain relevant certifications that will

help me advance in my career. Learning never stops, and I believe that continuous growth is essential for long-term success.

Study + Career tips

One of the small yet effective strategies that helped me improve my communication skills was listening to English-language podcasts. This practice significantly enhanced my vocabulary and helped me articulate my thoughts more clearly. I strongly encourage students and professionals alike to invest in continuous learning—whether through formal education, self-study, or simply engaging with new ideas. Knowledge is a powerful tool that can transform lives, and I truly believe that embracing lifelong learning is the key to success.

Structural Engineer at Indigo

MSc Project Management

Success story

I am from Pakistan and came to the UK at the beginning of 2022. In 2023, I graduated with an MSc in Project Management from the UWS London campus. Studying there was a wonderful experience. The environment was excellent, the faculty was knowledgeable, and the staff were very supportive, especially in terms of learning and the hybrid study environment.

‘‘One of my best memories is my first day at the university.’’

I vividly remember sitting in the classroom, realizing I was in the heart of London, pursuing my master’s degree—a day I had always dreamed of. It was one of the best days of my life, even if I didn’t learn much that day. It was a moment of fulfilment and joy. The excitement of being in a new city, meeting new people, and embarking on a new academic journey was overwhelming. The diverse and vibrant atmosphere of London added to the thrill of starting this new chapter in my life.

However, my journey was not without its challenges. One of the significant challenges I faced was adapting to a new educational

system. The teaching methods and academic expectations in the UK were quite different from what I was used to in Pakistan. I had to quickly adapt to a more self-directed learning approach, which required a high level of discipline and time management. Balancing coursework, assignments, and personal life was initially overwhelming.

Another challenge was the cultural adjustment. Moving to a new country with different customs and social norms required a period of adjustment. I had to learn to navigate a new social environment, make new friends, and build a support network from scratch. This was particularly challenging during the initial months when everything felt unfamiliar.

Language barriers also posed a challenge. Although I was proficient in English, the academic language and terminologies used in my coursework were sometimes difficult to grasp. I had to put in extra effort to understand and use these terms correctly in my assignments and presentations.

Networking played a crucial role in my journey. From the very beginning, I made it a point to attend various networking events organized by the university. These events provided me with the opportunity to meet alumni and fellow students. Engaging in conversations with these individuals not only expanded my professional network but also provided me with valuable insights into the industry.

Another significant networking experience was joining Association for Project Management (APM). This membership provided me with access to exclusive events, webinars, and a

community of professionals who were always willing to share their knowledge and experiences. Through this association, I met a mentor who guided me through the job search process and provided me with invaluable advice on career development.

The job search in the UK was challenging, but it taught me the importance of consistency. I faced many rejections initially, which made me reflect on my skills and what employers were looking for. I learned that confidence in one’s skills is crucial. Many people, including myself, often underestimate their abilities.

‘‘It’s important to listen to yourself, understand your situation, set goals, and work towards them, despite the opinions of others.’’

The process was a learning curve, and each rejection was a step towards understanding the job market better and refining my approach.

Confidence in my skills was key to landing a job. I updated my resume to accurately reflect my abilities and made sure to relate those skills to the job I was interviewing for. It took me about two months to realize I needed to change my job search approach, and then an additional six months to secure a job. During this time, I focused on enhancing my skills, attending workshops, and networking with professionals in the industry. This proactive approach eventually paid off, and I was able to secure a position that aligned with my career goals. My degree from a London campus was instrumental in achieving my career goals. The global recognition of the degree, along with the

networking opportunities and access to industry leaders in London, significantly boosted my career prospects. The cultural exposure and high-quality education I received added immense value, helping me secure a job in the telecommunications industry after graduating with an MSc in Project Management. The degree not only provided me with the technical knowledge required for my field but also equipped me with soft skills such as communication, leadership, and problem-solving, which are essential in any professional setting.

I am doing great in my job! I am focused on improving communication with the Project Management office to ensure smooth project execution. Additionally, I have been instrumental in creating effective templates and workflows for tracking work, which has been very beneficial to the team. These contributions have been recognized by my colleagues and superiors, and I have received positive feedback for my efforts. This recognition has motivated me to continue striving for excellence and to keep pushing the boundaries of what I can achieve.

Next, I plan to further improve my skills and aim to become a project director. I believe that continuous learning and professional development are key to career growth. I am also actively seeking mentorship from experienced professionals in the field to gain insights and guidance on how to navigate my career path effectively.

In conclusion, my journey from Pakistan to the UK, and my experiences at the UWS London campus, have been transformative. The education and opportunities I received have played a crucial role in shaping my career. The challenges I faced

during my studies and job search taught me valuable lessons about resilience, confidence, and the importance of continuous learning. My story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of a quality education on one’s career.
