At the inception of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in 1913 at Howard University, the Founders envisioned an organization of college women pledged to serious endeavor and community service. These youthful students demonstrated a vital concern for social welfare, academic excellence, and cultural enrichment, and de-emphasized the social side of sorority life. Their ideals of scholarship and service have withstood the test of time, and, today, Delta Sigma Theta is a public service sorority, dedicated to a program of sharing membership skills and organizational services in the public interest. In 1930, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated as a national organization. The record of incorporation is filed in the Congressional Library in the Office of the Recorder of Deeds in Washington, D.C. Today, there are over 200,000 members and more than 900 chapters in 45 states, the Republic of Korea, Okinawa and Tokyo, Japan, England, Germany, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Dearest Debutantes, Escorts, Family and Friends,
I am honored to welcome you on behalf of the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. to “Radiant Rubies of Resilience!”
The Debutante Cotillion is the culminating Event that completes one year of activities for promising young ladies that represent our future. These young ladies have participated in workshops that focus on college preparation, career goals, communication skills, leadership and service. We are privileged to have helped prepare these debutantes through the mentoring opportunity known as Teen Lift, which is one of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Educational Programmatic Thrusts. What is so exceptional about this year’s Teen Lift Program and Cotillion is that we are also celebrating 40 years of this phenomenal program.
As this part of their journey has finally come to fruition it is their time to be presented to you so that we can all bear witness to all they have accomplished. Congratulations to these extraordinary young ladies who do indeed represent our chapter’s focus on Service, Excellence and Impact. Thank you to our Escorts who have been committed and supportive throughout this program. Thank you to the parents and parent figures who have provided a lifetime of love and encouragement to these promising young ladies. Thank you to our Chair, JoAnn Pitts, our Co Chairs, Angie Afzal and Yvonne Williamson and the entire Teen Lift Committee for all their dedication and diligence in planning this spectacular event.

Dear Friends,
We humbly thank you for choosing to share this day, the 40th Anniversary of The Teen Lift program with us. We have the enormous pleasure of introducing the 2023 Debutantes of the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Forty years ago, our chapter had the desire to implement a program to address the educational, social and cultural needs of our young female scholars. Their intent was to assemble youths within the greater Cleveland urban communities to provide experiences that develop a sense of pride, purpose and commitment to their communities. We believe we have transformed the lives of hundreds of young women; we have helped mold them into contributing citizens. We are proud of the mark we leave on the greater Cleveland community through our work with these young women.
Our theme, Radiant Rubies of Resilience embodies the passion of the nineteen debutantes of the 2023 Teen Lift program.
Over the past several months it has been our joy to work with these young ladies. We are appreciative of our debutantes and their families who have taken this journey with us over the past several months. These young ladies are accomplished and confident. They have invested their time, attention and commitment to a program designed to help them blossom into women who will have an impact on this and succeeding generations.
The Teen Lift Program has remained dedicated to its mission of providing an impactful service to our chosen debutantes and to offer experiences that support and uplift these young women as they prepare to assume their roles and responsibilities in our society. This year's Teen Lift program experiences have included a series of workshops that were designed to enhance their social graces, encourage political action, and instill a commitment to public service. Our debutantes participated in the following workshops: Mother Daughter Tea, Father Daughter Celebration of Love, social bonding, political awareness, healthy relationships, financial literacy, international awareness, and career exploration. Through our dynamic program activities, it is our hope that we helped to strengthen the family bonds, develop new friendships, foster dedication, commitment, and leadership.
We thank and appreciate each of our debutantes, escorts and their families for their commitment and perseverance.
To the dynamic Teen Lift Committee THANK YOU for your dedication, commitment, and service. We appreciate all that you do to make this a memorable experience for our young ladies and their families. Tonight, we especially pay homage to those committee members who have participated in Teen Lift consistently for 25 or more years.
It is with deep pride that we introduce the 2023 Debutantes of the Greater Cleveland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Enjoy the cotillion!!
Sincerely,
JoAnn Pitts, Chair Angela Afzal, Co-Chair Yvonne Williamson, Co-ChairGreater Cleveland alumnae Chapter

My most memorable moment was when I participated in the movie Draft Day. The scene I took part in was at the gym where I trained for cheer and tumbling. After all day filming, I unexpectedly had the opportunity to personally meet Chadwick Boseman and Kevin Costner. I was so excited to share that whole experience with the local
news and my family. This was a very special moment to me because I was able to not only showcase my tumbling skills but to also meet two celebrities.
My goal is to attend a four year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology, then attend medical school. I plan to continue my studies and further my education in a pediatric residency program. After college, my goal is to have a successful career as a pediatrician and open my own private practice. I have always had a passion for helping children.

My most memorable moment was when I was a Peer Model/Cheer Coach this summer for the Blue Ribbon Team, an inclusive cheer team for women with special needs. At the first practice they all felt butterflies when performing or thinking about it. Around the eighth week, we were invited to be part of our city's home days parade. Before the parade started the girls were extremely nervous, which was a side of them I hadn’t seen in weeks. But, once we began to walk and do some of our cheers, I could see them open up like they were at practices. Being able to see them
light up that day made me feel so happy and proud that I was able to help them grow in their confidence like my coaches had done for me in the past.
After graduating high school, I plan to get my undergraduate degree at an HBCU majoring in Psychology and/or Criminal Justice, with that I plan to become either a Criminal Defense Attorney or a Criminal Psychologist.

I admire your ability to bring joy to those around you. Seeing you grow into the strong, smart, and unstoppable young woman makes me so proud. I thank God each and everyday for you and ask him to watch over you, my precious gem. I love you with everything in me. Continue to be the reason someone smiles. God’s Blessings Always.

Autumn has a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.9. She was inducted into the National Honor Society on April 21, 2022. Autumn is very active in school and has participated in extracurricular activities throughout high school. Autumn’s favorite subjects are science and mathematics. She has represented her school and competed in math competitions at Case Western Reserve University. Autumn is a member of Student Council and was elected Senior Class President to represent her peers. In addition, Autumn played volleyball for three years at school.
Autumn was baptized on March 21, 2018. She is very compassionate and enjoys helping others. Autumn volunteers at MedWish International with her mother where she helps package repurposed medical supplies and equipment to ship to people in need around the world.
I have a lot of memorable moments during my high school years. However, the most memorable moment was being inducted into the National Honor Society. This moment was a dream come true for me. I’ve worked hard during my high school years and waited patiently for this moment. The ceremony was a great experience, and my family came out to
support me.
My goal is to attend college, and I plan to study Biochemistry. My goal is to become a radiologist.
Autumn, we’re beyond proud of you and the accomplishments that you have made in your life. Continue to pray for God’s guidance and discernment as you travel on to your next journey. Stay humble and confident because it is going to help you throughout your life. Remember, the only way to grow is to continue to stay focused and challenge yourself. Always dream big and conquer those goals one at a time. You are a born leader, and you will make an impact in this world.

My goals for the year are to improve my communication and social skills. As well as read at least one book a month. I have changed my career plans throughout high school, but I have decided on going into the STEM field to become a biologist in studying the water and the organisms that live within it. What if there are unfound organisms within the ocean’s abyss or the ocean’s water can become drinkable? I would like to be the one to discover those unidentified species and conduct those experiments.
The motto that has helped me get through high school is “You’ll always have the future, so make sure to live in the now.”
My mother has taught me to never stop being true to who you are and what you believe in. Stand tall, stay fierce, and if the crown starts to fall; pick it up and reposition it. My father has taught me I can do anything I put my mind to, my father is the one who pushes me to try new things and shows me there is no limit to life. If you want to move across the country go ahead, if you want to run a marathon go ahead why not. I’ve been taught to do things that may be out of your ordinary to get that full experience of life and everything it has to offer.

My memorable moment was accepting Jesus Christ into my heart. I have been going to church all my life but it was around the summer of 2016 that I truly wanted to gain a closer relationship with
God. All summer I was praying, reading scriptures, and asking my parents questions about the Bible. At the end of a church service I prayed the salvation prayer and I felt God’s presence. I went to the altar and told the prayer warriors I was ready to give my life to God. Six years later and I feel just as renewed as the time I came up from the water when being baptized. Every step of the way I know God is with me!
After high school I plan to attend an HBCU for to study nursing. During college I plan on becoming a content creator and having a skin care business for girls that struggle with eczema like myself. I want to help all people in every way I can.

One of my most memorable moments in life has been my first Varsity cheer game. When
I was younger, I looked forward to being on the team and to actually be on it, bringing everything full circle. This moment was when I realized my hard work paid off. It’s a moment I will cherish and always appreciate.
I would like to accomplish the goals of graduating college, getting married, raising a family, being successful in my career surrounding education and possibly law but most importantly, doing what God has called me to do.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.”

Joe and Jayah Clark and Marcus and Niesha Glanton. She is also the granddaughter of Amos and Joyce Watters.
Nevaeh Glanton is a senior in the top five percent of her class. She has been a member of the volleyball team since freshmen year. Aside from her athletic endeavors Nevaeh also has a passion for giving back and joined the volunteer group of the Greater Cleveland Food Bank. Her responsibilities include helping families maneuver through the food bank facilities, ensuring that they receive everything they need. Nevaeh holds leadership roles in school and at home. At school she is responsible for helping incoming freshmen acclimate to their new school as a school guide. She also assists her parents with caring for her younger brother Noah Clark and calming his Kindergarten jitters.
Nevaeh aspires to attend an HBCU as they offer a nurturing environment for all ethnicities. She wants to major in Communications or Political Science. The thought of being surrounded by black women who aspire to do something extraordinary excites her. After completion of her undergraduate degree, Nevaeh plans to pursue a degree in Law.
When Nevaeh was honored with the Most Improved trophy from her varsity volleyball coach. This moment was specifically special to Nevaeh because she strives for improvement and greatness in everything she does and this
moment made her feel that her hard work and efforts had not gone unnoticed.
Nevaeh has hopes of becoming a lawyer to help minorities that may be wrongly accused or imprisoned. Nevaeh plans on spending her time as a lawyer working to amend the justice system largely known for discrimination against black and brown people.
“Don’t let your now affect your tomorrow... you got this girl’’. This helps encourage her whenever she is stressed or in a difficult situation. She is then reminded to push through and overcome it.
“Nevaeh, as our first born you have helped us grow immensely as parents. We love you beyond words and you continue to make us proud. Your resilience and ability to turn lemons into lemonade has truly been rewarding to witness. As you transition into young adulthood know that you are loved. You are fearlessly and wonderfully made. You have a brilliant mind and endless talents. Continue to seek God’s face (as only He will grant you the desires of your heart), and work hard and know that the sky is the limit. We will love you always and forever our sweet baby girl. We wish you only God’s very best!”
During all four years of high school, I participated in volleyball. I have also participated in club volleyball and summer volleyball camps. I have been on both the honor roll and merit roll my entire high school years. During my junior year, I was inducted into the junior wall of fame for students with a pattern of excellence, a history of perseverance, and engaged in humanitarian and volunteer activities in the greater community. Sporadically throughout high school, I participated in the teen church. I take pride in making a difference and giving back to my community; therefore, I have many hours of community service. I have volunteered at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, the Euclid Food Pantry, shelters, Kosher Food Bank, and youth volleyball camps and have made many clothing donations.
My most memorable moment was switching high schools my junior year and coming onto a team where I was able to be myself. Also, switching to my new high school was very memorable because, during my first year there, I was nominated by my peers and staff for the junior wall of fame. Being new to the school, I was surprised that my hard work and dedication were recognized so quickly. This immediately helped me realize I am a leader and role model to others.
My goals as of right now are to finish my last year of high school with straight A’s and obtain as many scholarships as possible. The plan I have for myself after I graduate is to attend a four-year
HBCU to earn my degrees in the medical field. I also aspire to travel within my career to assist others in countries where help and resources are scarce while also doing one of my favorite things: exploring the world and learning about different cultures.
“Nothing will work unless you do” -Maya Angelou.
To my beautiful daughter Nylah! This is your last year of high school, and words can’t express how proud I am of you. I want you to try and enjoy life every day, make friends, make memories and know that whatever you put your mind to, you are more than capable of doing. Continue to strive to be great at everything you do or touch, and know that whatever you desire to do, your entire family has your back! And whenever and for whatever reason you call me, I will be there no matter what!
To the princess, my twin, and my only daughter, you have grown into a beautiful, intelligent, and kind young woman. As you enter into womanhood and make your debut, my prayer is that you continue to experience unconditional love and support. I pray you accomplish all your goals n life, but if life becomes a rollercoaster, climb in the front will love you forever and always.

Participating in the (OSLI) Oelschlager Summer Leadership Institute this summer at the University of Akron. While I was there, I got to see and experience college life. I also did different activities such as meeting the creators of the program, listening to different public speakers tell their story, participating in team work games, going to different art museums as well as attending the Akron Rubber Ducks Baseball Game. I met lots of new people and created lots of new bonds that I hope to keep forever. Even though this experience was cut a few days short due to a Covid Outbreak, I still enjoyed the time I spent there.
My goal is to attend an HBCU and study in the medical field. After college, I would like to become a Neonatal or Travel Nurse. I would also like to become a licensed Cosmetologist, I plan on receiving my licensure soon. My overall goal in life is to be a caring, thoughtful, sympathetic person which leads to my personal motto.
My Motto and A Quote that I say to myself daily is “W.A.Y.S” (Why Aren’t You Smiling) - Jhene Aiko. My personal motto is, be the change you want to see in others and encourage yourself during life's challenges; inspired from one of my favorite gospel songs, “Encourage Yourself” by Donald Lawrence & The Tri City Singers.
Always follow directions; there will always be challenges to face in life, just overcome the obstacle that tries to stand in your way and success will be your reward! The importance of education and faith has always been stressed and exemplified. The following pieces of advice that has always been stressed is: stand up for others, be on the side of right even when it is not popular; be yourself and strive to be all that you can be, and finally, never give up and always have a plan A, B and C.

Alaysia has participated in the Concept Young Scholars Program (CYSP) for two years. She attended science fairs and won many awards! She completed community service hours and more! Alaysia recently discovered her love for performing poetry by performing in her school's Black History Month Showcase. She began performing at events, and even led her own creative writing workshop at the Museum of Contemporary Arts (MOCA), creating and publishing a magazine. Noticing mental health issues due to the pandemic, Alaysia sought therapy. Alaysia was released from her treatment with a much more positive outlook.
She was later offered to be inducted into the National Honor Society, in which she accepted. Alaysia and a close friend started a mentorship program at CSSM, where some juniors and seniors mentored the freshmen, and some sophomores.
Being asked to speak on legislation involving Black women and girls, by councilwoman Stephanie Howse at only 16 years old.

During the summers of 2017 & 2018, Darcelle attended Be WISE (Women In Science & Engineering) Camp at Denison University for one week. The camp was a great experience for Darcelle, in which she developed a strong interest in Forensic Science. Darcelle plans to study Criminology/Forensic Science in college and hopefully study abroad. Having an interest in science & medicine has opened many doors for Darcelle, which allowed her to participate in two internships; ASPIRE and RISE.
Participants in the ASPIRE Nurse Scholars Program receive career information and valuable skills that will aid in their path of higher education, nursing school, and beyond. CSSM and Cleveland Clinic collaborate on the Research Intensive Summer Experience (RISE) program; a professional laboratory setting which provides students with the opportunity to perform biomedical research first-hand. Darcelle currently participates in Horizon, a program where high school students and Case Western students works on reallife medical situations, examine organs, perform CPR, and more.
Darcelle loves to travel, the summer of 2019 she was accompanied by her Girl Scout Troop and her mother to London, England; Paris, France and Lucerne, Switzerland. This trip to Europe was one of her best experiences ever. The summer of 2022 Darcelle had an opportunity to travel to Italy and Greece, but with disappointment had to decline due to accepting an internship with RISE.
Darcelle is an active book club member and environmental club member at her school. Darcelle loves her classes; she has attained many awards because of her love of school. She has received high honors in biology, math, and history. Her experiences have challenged Darcelle in many ways; she hopes her college experience will be just as rewarding.
Darcelle has been involved in community service; she helped lead a toiletry drive that distributed supplies to the homeless. She has volunteered at the Cleveland Food Bank and is overjoyed with her current responsibility as a teacher assistant. Darcelle knows the importance of volunteer work as being loyal, committed and learning valuable skills.

My most memorable moment was overlooking the clear sparkling Atlantic Ocean. The fresh salty smell of the ocean was breathtaking along with the once in a lifetime view of the water. On the cruise ship I remember hearing loud joyful laughter coming from my father, mother, grandma and my two older brothers as we sat at the round table on the deck. In this moment I remember feeling supreme delight as the beaming sun created a filter of sunlight. This moment makes me remember that no matter how stressful life may get in the future or no matter how many people let me down, my extraordinary family will be there every step of the way.
My goal is to attend college to earn a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Environmental Sustainability. While Attending college I plan on participating in The Air Force ROTC program to become an officer. My most memorable moment was a chilly November evening, 2014. I was 8 years old, and my mother had a surprise for me. I didn’t know this at the time, but we were traveling to a
place that would change my entire life. As we entered the parking lot of the Fairfax Connection Building, I could see countless cameras and newscasters, as well as a small, birdhouse- shaped structure sitting in the window. As my mom held my hand, I entered a world of unfamiliar sounds and speech. Everyone bustled about mentioning some sort of “Little Free Library”. While she stopped to chat with someone, a cameraman from Channel 3 news approached me and asked if I would like to do an interview. I enthusiastically agreed, and as they say, the rest is history. Because of that day, I became the renowned motivational speaker I am now.
I have several goals, both educational and personal. My educational goals are to attend an HBCU and major in animal science. Once I have obtained my Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, my goal is to attend Veterinary School to become a Veterinarian Physician/ Surgeon. My career goal is to own a veterinary clinic that specializes in domestic animals. Some of my personal goals are to be a published author and continue promoting literacy around the world. I aspire to be a role model for young black females, pursuing public speaking.
"Be your authentic self, everyone else is taken” ~Tracy and Madison Reid
Madison, you have always been the joy of my life. From the moment you entered this world, with a boisterous cry, to this current “girl is on fire” moment; you have and will continue to set this world a blaze. Continue to be the best you “unapologetically”! You are fiercely made by God’s hands, with strength, courage, resilience, and tenacity. Know whatever you want in life “go for it”. Yes you will fail, but nothing beats a fail like another try. Don’t change who you are so other people can like you…stay you so the right people can love you! Your generosity will attract many but don’t allow your heart to be the pied piper to the vexed, insecure, and narcissistic of the world. The secret to success is knowing that you are already! Always extend the hand back to bring another sister up. “Not everyone who chased the zebra caught it, but he who caught it, chased it”.

Deasia is a senior, who attends a school which focuses on the empowerment of women. She is a member of B.S.O, (Black Student Organization), a group works on the problems that the underclassmen minorities face in their day to day life and help them understand the blessings they have of being “different”. She is also a proud member of Show Up, a club that focuses on allyship. Believing it is important to work with one another and be there for each other when someone feels lonely is an issue Deasia strives to fix. Focused on her faith in school, she serves as a Pure Minister at mass. This role includes reading petitions/1st reading, carrying the crucifix, or maybe even passing out programs for her classmates to follow. She is always the first name that comes to mind when a lead position opens. She also is a member of the Yearbook Committee, Ambassadors Club, and Spanish Club, which she has been a part of since her eventful freshman year.
Deasia will never forget being on the 2 time winning 4x400m Division 2 State championship team. The relay team of these four young ladies stand undefeated in the 4x400m and have set many records that hopefully will last a while. She can even be seen on the cover of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Handbook.
Deasia has been brought up in this church for her entire life. She was confirmed there at the age of fourteen. She serves as the President of the
Youth Ministry. In her presidential duties, she can be found writing sermons to deliver in front of the congregation, brainstorming ideas to keep the youth engaged, and leading a praise dance group called Total Praise. Deasia brought forth the idea of a Drive-in Prayer which is held on one Saturday of each month. The youth come to the car and pray for you whether or not you belong to the church, anyone is welcome. Deasia also serves as an usher or acolyte on youth Sundays. She is grateful to make a difference for her church and fully appreciates what God has done, will do, and is doing for her.
Deasia wants to attend a HBCU and study Psychology. The way the brain functions keeps her intrigued. With a degree in Psychology she aspires to become a Therapist in the future who works with athletes who have been injured and are having a hard time mentally. This way she can live out her dream of forming a connection with athletes and making their life a little bit easier.

Erin was a student ambassador, participated in student advertisements for her high school, sang in the school choir, and played varsity volleyball. In church she is in the children's choir, youth group, and has participated in multiple food and clothes drives.
The most memorable moment I've had was when my volleyball team played against St. Martin. We took each other to 5 sets. We had to win best out of 3 and we did just that. This game was the most intense and challenging game of my whole high school years so far. I, along with my teammates, gave it our all and won the game.

My many goals in life have to do with school goals, career aspirations, and adult life. My school goal is to continue my studies at an HBCU college. My career aspiration is to become a surgical tech.
My favorite encouraging words are from my cousin Chrystal, her mom and her brother. They said “We are so proud of the woman you are growing up to be. May you enter the next chapter of your life focused and determined to change and impact the world around you. Your service in your community will not go unnoticed, so please keep up the good work. May you let the Lord order your steps and fight all your battles. Where God guides, He provides. — Isaiah 58:11 Keep him first! It’s not always going to be easy but stay the course. We will continue to pray for you while you navigate this journey called life. We want all the great things to come your way: health, strength, prosperity, and happiness. Best wishes.”
