Questa è una storia che non comincia con “c'era una volta...”, ma comincia ogni volta con “per la prima volta...”. E se Tecno fosse la protagonista di una favola del genere non sarebbe la bella e smarrita principessa che alla fine di una serie di peripezie visse felice e contenta, ma sarebbe la rivincita della vecchia affascinante e implacabile regina che, appunto, ricomincia ogni volta daccapo industriandosi in qualche nuova diavoleria delle sue brame. Vecchia perché è saggia, ma con un filtro magico che l'ha resa impermeabile al passare degli anni, che lei sfida anticipandoli.

Tecno is a severe, outsider of a queen, operating at another level, unrivalled in the race, because when you reach the finish line, she’s already started another lap. And she doesn’t look back. It’s a company that’s aloof even in its self-parody and the levity that it bears in its armour so charged with knowledge and intellect that they call it a name that etymologically expresses this intelligence but is also one of the most adventurous genres of music. It’s true that comparisons don’t work so far as Tecno is concerned, but there are no other design companies who have put their soundtrack in their name, just as there aren’t many design companies who’ve made technological innovations their amplifiers. And finally, there are very few design companies who truly look forwards, rather than backwards, outwards instead of in.

Tecno è una regina austera, outsider, indipendente dai confronti, inarrivabile nella rincorsa, perché quando si chiude il cerchio, ha già cominciato un altro giro. E non si guarda indietro. È un'azienda snob persino nell'autoironia e nella leggerezza che si porta dentro in quelle armature così cariche di sapienza e pensiero, che le danno sì un nome che è un'etimologia di questa intelligenza, ma anche quello di un genere musicale dei più audaci. È vero che i paragoni per Tecno non funzionano, ma non ci sono altre aziende di design che hanno inscritto nel proprio nome la loro colonna sonora, come non ci sono molte aziende di design che abbiano fatto delle innovazioni tecnologiche i propri amplificatori. E, infine, sono pochissime le aziende di design in Italia che guardano davvero avanti, anziché indietro; fuori anziché dentro.

This story doesn’t begin with “once upon a time, there was”. Instead, it starts every time with “for the first time”. And if Tecno was the protagonist of such a story, it wouldn’t be a fair princess muddling through a series of ups and downs before living happily ever after; it would instead be the turn of the mature, captivating and unrelenting queen who sets out anew every time by getting to work on some new devilry to satisfy her cravings. She’s mature in that she’s wise, but with a magic potion that has made her immune to the passing years, that she challenges by anticipating them.

We take it as read that whoever reads these pages is already familiar with the Tecno brand and the silent noise that its story echoes. We take it as read that they know what they ought to about the Borsani family, that they call the chairs, tables and partition systems by name. We take it as read, as Tecno and its leaders have always done, every time raising the bar of what was done the day before and even angling it a bit so that, in contrast to the chairs that they produce, the desire to relax on it isn’t greatly stimulated. So we’re producing a book for people who’ve seen the story start on many occasions, but still don’t know how it will end. So this is a project book. That wants to look beyond.

Diamo per scontato che chi avrà per le mani queste pagine, abbia già una confidenza col marchio Tecno e il rumore silenzioso che la sua storia echeggia nel mito del design italiano. Diamo per scontato che sappia della gloriosa famiglia Borsani quanto si deve, che chiami per nome le sedute, i tavoli, i sistemi di parete. Lo diamo per scontato, come hanno sempre fatto Tecno e i suoi capitani, alzando ogni volta l'asticella di ciò che è stato fatto il giorno prima e pure inclinandola un po' in modo che, a differenza delle sedie che producono, non venga voglia di adagiarcisi troppo sopra. Facciamo un libro, dunque, per le persone che hanno visto la storia iniziare un sacco di volte, ma non sanno ancora come va a finire. Questo è quindi un libro di progetto. Che vuole gettare lo sguardo oltre.

To start a story every time for the first time, however, you also need a great number of images to draw on. Now that’s a real once-upon-a-time story, one that’s still there. Or rather, a wealth of stories, which don’t operate as badges on the uniform of the respectable design company, but are expressions of an irrepressible need to narrate the design project. Not the boast of production, but the grammar of the products. And this is the catalogue. A substantial collection of “things” not just conceived, invented, designed and produced but also instructed on how to exist within the world, on how to inhabit buildings, how they will present themselves, how they will be maintained. Things as conduits for a sense that, even when conceived in the private sphere of intelligence, goes on to find an outgoing manner of returning to the world. Or rather, that is born from the world.

Per iniziare una storia ogni volta per la prima volta, però, c'è bisogno anche di un ingombrante patrimonio di immagini a cui poter attingere. Una storia, quella sì, che c'è stata realmente una volta e c'è ancora. Anzi tante, tantissime storie, che non funzionano come distintivi sulla divisa della buona azienda di design, ma sono espressioni di un'incontenibile bisogno di narrazione del progetto di design. Non il vanto della produzione, ma la grammatica dei prodotti. Ecco il catalogo. Un nutrito repertorio di “cose” non solo pensate, inventate, progettate e realizzate ma anche istruite sul loro stare nel mondo, sul come abiteranno gli edifici, come si racconteranno, come si manterranno. Le cose come trasportatrici di un senso che anche quando nasce nel privato delle intelligenze, poi trova una maniera estroversa di tornare al mondo. Anzi, che nasce dal mondo.

And this brand consummates a further example of its excellence here, which in contrast to many other companies in its sector, is capable of looking beyond itself, beyond its umbilical instinct, taking on the world, prefiguring its changes, intuiting people’s attitudes and probing their sentiments. “Then perhaps we construct an idea that things will go a certain way, and we find out we were mistaken only afterwards,” says Giuliano Mosconi, “but that’s our way of doing things, and we don’t know another.” And in all this curiosity and openness towards the outside, an extraordinary internal capacity, through which, irrespective of the designers it works with, irrespective of the typologies it deals with, irrespective of the variety of clients it dialogues with and adapts to, in the end the Tecno brand is always recognisable, wherever it goes.

E qui si consuma un'altra eccellenza di questo marchio, che a differenza di tante altre aziende del suo settore, è capace di guardare al di là di sé, oltre il proprio istinto ombelicale, misurandosi col mondo, prefigurandone i cambiamenti, intuendo gli atteggiamenti della gente e sondandone i sentimenti. Poi magari ci facciamo un'idea che le cose andranno in un certo modo e scopriamo solo dopo che ci siamo sbagliati – dice Giuliano Mosconi ma questo è il nostro modo di fare e non ne conosciamo un altro”. E in tutta questa curiosità e apertura verso il fuori si scopre poi una straordinaria tenuta interna, per la quale, al di là dei designer coi quali lavora, al di là delle tipologie con cui si confronta, al di là della varietà dei clienti con cui parla e a cui si adatta, alla fine il marchio Tecno è sempre riconoscibilissimo, ovunque vada.

— Ever onwards — Ancora avanti

Today, bringing together areas like technology with IT, the world of the office with comfort and new lifestyles and the hybridisation of public and private exposes you to two great risks: one is that of coldness; the other is that extreme competitiveness gives rise to a standard that loses sight of nature and instinct in favour of a cultural model. Tecno guards itself from this tendency thanks to a relationship with the contemporary that also considers a vital temporal element, like adaptability and “warm” transformation effected together with people. Again, inside and out of the company.

Mettere in relazione, oggi, poli come quello della tecnica con il digitale, del mondo degli uffici con il comfort e i nuovi stili di vita e ibridazione tra pubblico e privato si espone a due grandi rischi: uno è quello della freddezza; l'altro è quello che la competitività spinta generi uno standard che perda di vista la natura e l'istinto a favore del modello culturale. Tecno si salva da questa deriva grazie a un rapporto con la contemporaneità che sa prendersi cura anche di un elemento vitale di temporaneità, come adattabilità e trasformazione calda che si attua insieme alle persone. The request that resulted in this project was to create a portrayal of soul and sense, rather than brawn and success stories. Nor is the criterion chosen for the book’s narration chronological or typological, like a catalogue, but of places and capacities, a way of sizing up the challenges and adventures of a company. But a book from a company must tackle results, objects and projects. With the result that this work has taken on an encyclopaedic appearance, its monumental dimensions not for show but as a consequence of putting a series of factual information in good order, a book that resembles its company: a constant, slow, and at the same time mobile and discreet, presence, just like Tecno’s products. The book that you have to hand has attempted to delineate every project as if it were an individual character, with their own story and special characteristics, so it can be read starting at any point, or by crossing chapters and their paragraphs. We deliberately avoided emphasising performance not necessary to appreciate the specific value of the contribution from Tecno where it operated, and we minimised the surprise at finding the company “here too!” each time. But a book that talks of deeds, even with style and a touch of pride, is obliged to take a celebratory digression on what has been achieved up to now, and what

you will see in detail in the following pages. You’ll find Tecno at work in 45 countries, some examples chosen from the hundreds of bank branches furnished; cases that have extended the thousands of kilometres of partitions installed; products that have earned the company just shy of 20 awards; including 5 Compassi d’Oro from Italy’s Industrial Design Association and a client portfolio featuring the main industrial groups, institutions and public and private organisations at an international level. Objects, or rather, products that beyond here are exhibited at some of the world’s leading museums: MOMA (New York and San Francisco); Victoria and Albert Museum (London); Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris); Neue Sammlung (Munich); Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Montreal) and Triennale di Milano. The same products, or rather, objects that you’ll see here inserted in settings both public and private, for passing through, waiting, or working, whether privately or with the public, made to measure, redesigned, defying ever new limits and looking forwards. e un po' di fierezza, non può esimersi da una legittima parentesi di celebrazione di quanto, fin qui, è stato fatto e che nelle pagine successive, vedrete nei dettagli. Troverete 45 paesi in cui Tecno opera, alcuni esempi scelti tra le centinaia di filiali di banche arredate; casi che sono andati a nutrire le migliaia di chilometri di pareti montate; prodotti che hanno portato all'azienda quasi 20 premi, di cui 5 Compassi d'Oro; e un portafoglio clienti che vede i principali gruppi industriali, istituzioni, enti pubblici e privati a livello mondiale. L'istanza con cui nasce questo progetto, è quella di dar vita a un racconto dell'anima e del senso, più che dei muscoli e degli esiti. Il criterio scelto per la narrazione del libro non è quello cronologico o tipologico del catalogo, ma quello dei luoghi e delle capacità, su cui si misurano sfide e avventure di un'azienda. Eppure, il libro di un'azienda non può prescindere dal confrontarsi coi risultati, oggetti e progetti. Perciò, questo lavoro ha finito per assumere l'aspetto di un'enciclopedia, in cui la monumentalità non risponde a esigenze di spettacolarizzazione ma all'insieme dei dati di fatto, messi tutti in fila e ordinati. Un libro che assomiglia alla sua azienda, una presenza continua, lenta, e al tempo stesso mobile e discreta, proprio come i prodotti Tecno. Il libro che avete sottomano ha provato a isolare ogni progetto come un personaggio a sé, con la sua storia e la sue caratteristiche speciali e perciò può essere letto cominciando da dove si vuole, o incrociando i capitoli e i loro paragrafi. Volutamente, non abbiamo enfatizzato performance che non fossero necessarie a comprendere il valore specifico del contributo di Tecno dove ha operato, e abbiamo minimizzato la sorpresa nel trovare l'azienda ogni volta “anche qua!”. Ma un libro che racconti le gesta, anche con eleganza

expertise Custom Prima che il concetto di customizzazione diventasse di moda e le aziende di design scoprissero l'importanza strategica e valoriale di dar vita a progetti unici lettaralmente costruiti intorno e insieme ai propri clienti, l'attenzione al taylor made era già nel DNA di Tecno. A sua volta, nel tempo, l'azienda ha poi scoperto e rafforzato un proprio modo di fare custom – potremmo dire customizzato intorno a Tecno stessa. Si tratta di una specificità della produzione che trova le sue origini già nell’Atelier ABV di Gaetano Borsani negli anni Venti, dove la cultura artigianale, la conoscenza profonda dei materiali e il dialogo teso e costante col cliente davano vita a prodotti unici sia sotto il profilo estetico che per le specificità tecniche.

Before the concept of customisation became fashionable and design companies discovered the strategic and value-related importance of generating unique projects literally built around and together with their clients, attention to the tailor-made was already in Tecno’s DNA. Over time, in turn, the company then discovered and consolidated its own way of doing custom – customised around Tecno itself, we might say. This is a specific feature of production which originates from the ABV Atelier of Gaetano Borsani in the 1920s, where the culture of craftsmanship, the in-depth knowledge of the materials and the constant dialogue extended to the client gave rise to products unique both in terms of aesthetics and specific technical features.

Today, the types of solutions made to measure vary from small interventions for top-flight offices to the creation of great buildings. From banks like Sanpaolo and Unicredit to private companies like BMW, from museums like the Centre Pompidou and the British Museum to public services like Correos and institutions like the European Parliament. Oggi, le tipologie dei lavori su misura variano dai piccoli interventi per uffici dâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;alto livello alle realizzazioni per edifici di grandi dimensioni. Da banche come Sanpaolo e Unicredit ad aziende private come BMW, da musei come il Centre Pompidou e il British Museum ad aziende pubbliche come Correos, fino a istituzioni come il Parlamento Europeo.

Over the years, Tecno has lent precision to spaces for visiting, selling, working or simply passing leisure time, with great attention to combining the location’s function with the client’s identity. The flexibility with which the company succeeds in seating members of parliament in session and young students visiting an exhibition alike has thus always been an indication of great respect, care and attention for people and their movements, but also for their needs, not necessarily expressed. It means knowing how to work with materials that are always new, with different lights and different temperatures, with different heights and volumes, but also other cultures of proxemics and new meanings of the word “work”. Some spaces call for colour, rotundity, padding; others require chromatic rigour and rationality, but everywhere a person must be imagined whose day is improved, unbeknownst to them, by thorough study relating to the design of the place where they are sitting.

Negli anni Tecno ha dato esattezza a spazi da visitare, da vendere, nei quali lavorare o semplicemente passare qualche ora di svago, con grande attenzione a incrociare la funzione del luogo con l'identità del cliente. La duttilità con cui l'azienda riesce a far sedere parlamentari in aula come giovani studenti in visita a una mostra, è da sempre quindi indice di un grande rispetto, cura ed attenzione per le persone e i loro gesti, ma anche per i loro bisogni, non necessariamente espressi. Significa saper lavorare con materiali sempre nuovi, con luci diverse e diverse temperature, con altezze e cubature differenti ma anche altre culture della prossemica e nuovi significati della parola “lavoro”. Alcuni spazi chiamano colore, rotondità, ovattamento; altri chiedono rigore cromatico e razionalità, ma ovunque ci si deve poter immaginare una persona alla quale la giornata verrà inconsapevolmente resa migliore dallo studio accurato intorno al progetto del posto dove è messa a sedere.

Tecno encountered the public interest in the design for the Saint-Malo Media Library, developed by Architecture Studio. For a bank like Intesa which has made its local connection one key factor of its success, having welcoming, well designed and functional subsidiaries is decisive, especially if the healthy body of a space needs to host healthy operations. Consequently, this project was born from the concept of the piazza, and it’s no coincidence that the renovation proposal involved interviews with clients and with the employees closest to them.

The layout plays on the optimisation of spaces and on “transparency”, a symbolic term that opens the piazza of exchange and business with the outside and reflects the hustle and bustle of the metropolis internally. For the Banca Intesa project, the counter was imagined as an emblematic presence with great scenic impact, which also made its presence felt thanks to its white colour contrasting with the warm, natural tones of the environment and acts as a point of orientation.

For every activity that involves the public, the idea of welcome is key, and aims to tackle one of the most powerful elements of resistance in clients dealing with orienting themselves within a multitude of services. The dual function of the counter consists in simultaneously concealing or screening an activity which is half closed internally and marks an interruption with the environment being approached, at the same time favouring interaction and friendly communication with those who approach. So the counter becomes an encouraging marker, a discreet facilitator, as in Tecno’s philosophy, which permits rapid, efficient processing and redirection.

Per ogni attività che abbia a che fare col pubblico, il tema dell'accoglienza è determinante e centra una delle più forti resistenze del cliente alle prese con una molteplicità di servizi in cui orientarsi. La funzione doppia del bancone consiste nel contempo nel mascherare o riparare un'attività che infatti è semichiusa al suo interno e marca un'interruzione con l'ambiente che si sta approcciando, e al tempo stesso favorire un'interazione e la comunicazione accogliente con chi si avvicina. Quando alla fine degli anni Novanta, Jean-François Bodin viene chiamato in una fase di ristrutturazione del Centre Pompidou per progettare la nuova Bibliothèque Publique d’Information, l'architetto si rivolge a Tecno per la realizzazione dei tavoli da lettura e librerie, disegnati su misura dallo stesso Bodin, delle sedute imbottite per le aree di sosta e le reception delle aree comuni. La biblioteca è oggi uno tra i centri più importanti al mondo specializzati nelle arti visive.

When, at the end of the 1990s, Jean-François Bodin was called on to design the new Bibliothèque Publique d’Information during the renovation of the Centre Pompidou, the architect turned to Tecno to create the reading tables and bookcases – specially designed by Bodin himself – padded seats for the waiting areas and receptions for the common areas. Today, the library is one of the world’s most important specialist visual arts centres.

La stessa industria degli imbottiti – Tecno ne è un esempio - molto deve ad applicazioni provenienti dal mondo automobilistico. Non è un caso che poi nella storia i percorsi si reincrocino e una delle più importanti aziende dell'auto al mondo, BMW, chieda a Tecno di arredare tutta la propria rete di concessionarie italiane: area vendita, accettazione, lounge e consegna, banconi reception, service e ricambi ed arredi bar. Tecno accetta la sfida.

Overstepping the boundaries of sector has been in the DNA of design from its outset. The padded seating industry itself – Tecno is one example – owes much to applications from the automotive world. Il caso della sede dell’azienda postale spagnola Correos a Madrid, inaugurata nel 2008, rappresenta un intervento molto speciale per il luogo che lo ospita, un palazzo storico che mette insieme caratteristiche vernacolari tipiche, gusto eclettico del tempo e materiali che vanno dalla pietra, ai mattoni, al metallo forgiato. Quando lo studio di architettura spagnolo Lizcano y Gonzalez Arquitectos Associados chiama Tecno, chiede di essere sostenuto in questa operazione di “guarigione delle ferite” del luogo e insieme progettano una linea completa di mobili di design che comprende panche e banchi retroilluminati e pensili, a comporre “un mosaico multicolore”.

The case of the headquarters for the Spanish postal company Correos in Madrid, inaugurated in 2008, represented a very special intervention because of the location that housed them, a historic building that combines typical vernacular characteristics, eclectic taste and materials ranging from stone to brick and forged metal. When Spanish architectural firm Lizcano y Gonzalez Arquitectos Associados called Tecno, they asked for support in “healing the wounds” of the location, and together they created a complete line of designer furniture including backlit benches and counters, to make up “a multicoloured mosaic”.

The underlying theme in the counters and the storage was the yellow colour from the Correos brand image. The front office section was furnished with specially designed counters: yellow back-painted glass fronts and polished stainless steel, with interior sections in white melamine. At the back of the front-office are the "Basic" cupboards, in a cascade of colour. Once more, we have the concept of a great forum, full of life and work.

Museums — Musei Museums are probably the places of experimentation that enchant Tecno the most, because they revive a civic vocation to the community and to providing the highest possible quality of furnishing, absent/present, that has to promote and assist the appreciation of other works, other masterpieces, becoming silently functional. This is the case with “Tabula”, created for the British Museum and subsequently chosen for many other projects thanks to its bead blasted steel finish, which limits the product ageing and wear process, applied in a museum with a high flow of visitors over time.

I musei sono probabilmente i luoghi di sperimentazione più affascinanti per Tecno perché ravvivano la vocazione civica alla comunità e alla restituzione della più alta qualità possibile nell'arredo, assente presente, che deve favorire e aiutare la fruizione di altre opere, altri capolavori, divenendo silenziosamente funzionale. È il caso di “Tabula”, nato per il British Museum e successivamente scelto per altri numerosi progetti grazie alla sua finitura in acciaio microbigliato, che riduce il processo di invecchiamento ed usura del prodotto, sottoposto in un museo ad un alto flusso di visitatori nel tempo. 3

SITA (Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques) con sede a Ginevra è azienda leader nel settore delle telecomunicazioni e dell'information technology. La modernità e l'aggiornamento anche in senso performativo delle proprie sedi erano dunque imprescindibili vettori dell'intervento. SITA (Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques), headquartered in Geneva and leader in the telecommunications and information technology sector. Modernity and update, also in the sense of the performance of its premises, were therefore essential factors in the intervention. But also the idea of wanting to think of a new way of working, shared and interactive between employees, to promote a new corporate image for the company itself.

The project was the result of Sitaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s requirement to renovate its offices globally, switching from closed to open plan, in order to increase interaction between employees and lend the company a new image.

Nel 1992 Tecno vince la prestigiosa gara per la realizzazione della nuova sala dell’emiciclo nella sede di Bruxelles del Parlamento Europeo, uno dei luoghi della politica più celebri e immortalati. Il progetto prevede la produzione su misura di 750 postazioni per i delegati parlamentari e il palco della presidenza. Tecno svilupperà il progetto tecnico realizzando tutti gli elementi d’arredo, anche per le sedute della sala e le postazioni dei giornalisti.

In 1992 Tecno won the bid to furnish the new prestigious semicircular room at the European Parliament headquarters in Brussels, one of the most celebrated and perennially famous political locations. The project saw the production of 750 made to measure stations for parliamentary delegates and the presidential stage. Tecno took responsibility for the technical design, producing all the items of furnishing, including the seating and the journalist stations.

Auditoriums — Auditorium Historically, the auditorium is a place dedicated to listening. The walls, the lights, the orientation, the seats and the acoustics must therefore be designed according to how much they can promote optimum reception. Actions and words play out in a precise location, central both literally and figuratively, probably of a superior degree, even if frequently found lower down. In front, those who listen do so equally and with unity in a kind of tacit, silent connection. The benches, the desks and the chairs that mingle in a continuous embrace are a metaphor for this democratic quality. Or rather, in a multitude of concentric embraces, where every hierarchical principle of the row drops away and the sense of the group in community prevails.

Storicamente l'auditorium è il luogo dedicato all'ascolto. I muri, le luci, l'orientamento, le sedute, l'acustica sono quindi pensati in funzione di quanto possono favorire la migliore ricezione. L'azione, la parola, si svolgono in un preciso luogo, protagonista e spazialmente centrale, probabilmente di grado superiore, anche se spesso si trova a una latitudine inferiore. Di fronte, coloro che ascoltano sono tutti uguali e uniti in una sorta di allaccio tacito e silente. Le panche, i banconi, così come le poltrone che si intrecciano in un abbraccio continuo sono metafora di questa democraticità. Anzi, in più abbracci concentrici in cui cade ogni valore gerarchico della fila e prevale il senso comunitario del gruppo.

Matteo Thun & Partners studio, responsible for conceiving the design for the new Unicredit agencies, requested intervention from Tecno, to create an openly friendly, informal and positive environment, in which living and working spaces merge. Oak, white details and brass contributed to this lightness. The transparency of the space and frosting created a dialogue between privacy and conversation. Tecno worked alongside Unicredit in this project not only in implementing and manufacturing the furnishings, but as coordinator and general contractor.

Con l'intervento nell'hotel 5 stelle Krystal Palace, Tecno arriva nel continente africano, e più precisamente a Douala, in Cameroun. Negli intenti del progetto vi è quello di rintracciare dei riferimenti nella tradizione artigianale da trasferire nell'estetica dell'hotel, ibridandoli con elementi di contemporaneità per rafforzare l'inserimento dell'edificio in una visione moderna del paese, nel rispetto della sua storia. Il progetto è relativo all'interior design di tutti i 14 piani per i quali vengono realizzati pavimenti, soffitti ed arredi ad hoc, come boiserie, banconi e porte realizzate su misura.

Tecno’s intervention at the 5-star Krystal Palace hotel took it to the continent of Africa, specifically, to Douala in Cameroon. One of the aims of the project is to identify points of reference in traditional craftsmanship to transfer to the aesthetic of the hotel, cross-fertilising them with contemporary elements to reinforce the insertion of the building within a modern vision of the country, with respect for its history. The project concerned the interior design of all 14 storeys, including floors, ceilings and dedicated furnishings, such as boiserie, counters and doors made to measure.

One of Tecnoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main challenges in this case was working with local staff, carrying out authentic training suitable for guaranteeing the necessary experience and design culture in order to approach the previously unseen complexity of this building. Una delle sfide principali per Tecno, in questo caso, Ă¨ consistita nel lavorare con personale locale, effettuando una vera e propria formazione atta a garantire la necessaria esperienza e cultura progettuale per approcciare la complessitĂ inedita di questo edificio.

But the intention of this collaboration is not merely that of respecting and reinforcing the powerful identity of the brands externally, but of safeguarding internal functionality and job quality for the people who experience it every day. The narrative that they construct, read from outside and through time, marks a fundamental chapter in the story of man and of relational and personal modalities that act within work, mixing informal and casual spaces with spaces of intellectual production and reconverting closed workspaces into hybrid open areas. There is always a nod towards flexibility in the severity and rigour of the furnishings; as with a lively and semantically evocative colour range that does away with the neutrality of black and white, in observance of the corporate identity of the client.

And then there’s the city, outside, into which this image flows and the economic activity from the interior quality and aesthetic performance is measured. Examples such as Porcelanosa in New York or Torre Breda in Milan, as well as Furla in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele constitute genuine urban landmarks. And if we think of companies like Safilo and Axa or like Philip Morris and Red Bull, it’s easy to see the extent to which the theme of customisation is central and to which the factors imposed by corporate culture represent challenges that are always new and compel Tecno and its engineering team to start afresh every time, with great strength and flexibility simultaneously.

This was a project from 2013, commissioned by CountryLab of Turin for the global headquarters of Philip Morris in Lausanne. The spaces, furnished with Beta duepuntozero, were conceived according to the concept of a creative campus, with welcoming, friendly and technological environments, and a focus on the furnishing details to provide – despite the open plan layout – the maximum possible privacy and comfort.

Si tratta di un lavoro del 2013, incaricato dallo studio torinese CountryLab per l’headquarter mondiale della Philip Morris a Losanna. Gli spazi, arredati con Beta duepuntozero sono stati concepiti con l'idea di un campus creativo, con ambienti accoglienti, friendly e tecnologici, studiando i particolari dell'arredo per dare comunque, pur nell'open space, il massimo di privacy e comfort possibile.

Pireus Bank si affida a Tecno per le sue sedi nel mondo dal 2005 ad oggi. In particolare, insieme all’arch. Peggy Petrakakos, arreda la sede centrale della banca a Il Cairo. Per le aree executive è impiegata la collezione Ianus in una versione speciale studiata insieme alla progettista, con le sedie Qualis di Emilio Ambasz, premio Compasso d’Oro nel 1991 e un altro grande classico come le poltrone S142; le aree medio-dirigenziali sono arredate invece con i tavoli Nomos e infine le 800 postazioni operative sono completate con il sistema Graphis firmato da Osvaldo Borsani ed Eugenio Gerli.

Piraeus Bank has trusted Tecno for its global offices from 2005 to the present day. In particular, together with architect Peggy Petrakakos, Tecno furnished the headquarters of the bank in Cairo. The executive areas adopted the Ianus collection in a special version created together with the architect, with the Qualis chairs by Emilio Ambasz, winner of a Compasso d’Oro (Italian Industrial Design Association Award) in 1991 and another great classic, the S142 armchairs; the middle management areas were instead furnished with the Nomos tables, and finally, the 800 workstations were completed with the Graphis system designed by Osvaldo Borsani and Eugenio Gerli.

For the project to furnish this well-known technology and engineering multinational in Mayfair, London, Tecno chose to bring together elements that recall the rigour of the architecture in the area with a setting capable of expressing its technological spirit. The selected elements were W80, white and ochre Beta duepuntozero for the general offices; Nomos with gloss black nickel structure and black Marquina marble top for the management offices, white for the meeting area; the new, extremely elegant Vela; plus Cento, Modus and historic pieces such as P32 and P40 together with the AT16 coat stand, chosen specifically by the companyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CEO. Nel progetto di arredi di questa nota multinazionale del settore energy, technology e engineering a Myfair, Londra, Tecno sceglie di accostare elementi che richiamano l'architettura rigorosa degli edifici del quartiere con un ambiente in grado di riflettere la sua anima tecnologica. For the insurance headquarters in Madrid, Tecno furnished the meeting rooms and President’s office. The key elements were the Nomos tables by Norman Foster and Asymmetrical tables by Piero Lissoni, customised with teak and juniper finishes for the tops and white Calacatta or black Marquina marble for the structures.

Tecno furnished the open plan areas of the Mexican office for this French industrial group. The system chosen was Beta duepuntozero, in its first Latin American appearance, identified by the client as the optimal solution for defining informal environments, directed towards co-working. Tecno provided some special made-tomeasure solutions, like the choice of colours in the corporate palette to reinforce the company brand identity.

The Hearst Tower, global headquarters of the Hearst Corporation, designed by Foster + Partners in 2006, with its 180 metres of steel and glass, it spires from an Art Deco Building realized in 1928. The English architect designed a highly technological and contemporary joint on the top of the historical building linking the two architectures. Hearst Tower is the first green skyscraper in New York: its energy consumption is 26% lower than the city’s standards, result awarded with the LEED Certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Ianus, series of executive furniture which is among the most classic in Tecno’s collection, is realized in solid wood and leather upholstery chosen in the warm tones of brown, in contrast with the steel and glass of the building.

La Hearst Tower, sede mondiale della Hearst Corporation progettata da Foster + Partners nel 2006, con i suoi 180 metri di acciaio e vetro, svetta su un edificio Art Deco realizzato nel 1928. L'innesto estremamente tecnologico e contemporaneo dell’architetto inglese si inserisce alla sommità dell'edificio storico introducendo un forte dialogo tra le due architetture. Hearst Tower è il primo grattacielo verde di New York: i suoi consumi energetici sono infatti inferiori di circa il 26% rispetto a quelli standard della città, record premiato con la Certificazione LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). Ianus, programma di arredi direzionali tra i più classici della produzione Tecno si inserisce negli interni degli uffici direzionali creando un voluto contrasto tra l’uso del legno massello e i rivestimenti in pelle scelti nei toni caldi dei marroni, e l'utilizzo dell’acciaio e del vetro impiegati per l'architettura esterna.

Archer Architects' main aim for the headquarters of Samsung in London was to create a new centre of excellence that simultaneously combined creative informality with the definition of details, the linearity of the space with the dynamism of the environment. All with the utmost respect for the historic character of what was previously in place. Once more, the Beta duepuntozero system – customised – took centre stage in Tecno’s intervention.

Per l'headquarter di Samsung a Londra, l'obiettivo chiave di Archer Architects era quello di costruire un nuovo polo di eccellenza che combinasse contemporaneamente l'informalità creativa alla definizione dei dettagli, la linearità dello spazio con la dinamicità dell'ambiente. Il tutto con estremo rispetto della storicità delle preesistenze. Ancora una volta, il protagonista dell'intervento di Tecno è il sistema Beta duepuntozero, personalizzato.

Con il flagship di Porcelanosa a New York, Tecno si ritrova a lavorare con uno degli architetti di riferimento da sempre, Norman Foster, incaricato di ridisegnare gli interni di questo spettacolare edificio dei primi del Novecento, situato nel fortunato incrocio tra Broadway e la Fifth Avenue. Lo sforzo dell'architetto inglese è di mantenere la facciata neoclassica, risistemata scheletricamente solo per favorire la massima ecosostenibilità dell'edificio e il suo aggiornamento funzionale e contemporaneo, mentre l'interno viene interamente ripensato in termini di innovazione e versatilità spaziale. Tecno viene scelta per assecondare la fluidità e il dinamismo delle nuove esigenze espositive e lavorative dell'azienda. Per gli arredi, vede il protagonismo naturale di Nomos, disegnato nel 1987 dallo stesso Foster e qui customizzato con il Krion, materiale più caldo ed evocativo della pietra naturale caratterizzante di Porcelanosa.

With the Porcelanosa New York Flagship Store, Tecno worked once more with an evergreen point of reference in architecture, Norman Foster, tasked with redesigning the interior of this spectacular building from the early 20th century, located in the successful intersection between Broadway and Fifth Avenue. The English architect felt strongly about maintaining the neoclassical façade, revamped minimally purely to favour the maximum environmental sustainability of the building and its functional and contemporary renovation, while the interior was completely reimagined in terms of innovation and spatial versatility. Tecno was chosen to boost the fluidity and dynamism of the company’s new presentational and work requirements. In terms of furnishings, Nomos naturally assumes a central role, designed in 1987 by Foster himself and here customised with Krion, a warmer and more evocative material than the natural stone that characterises Porcelanosa.

In 2013, Gattinoni asked for Tecno’s assistance in designing furnishings for their studio among the celebrated 31 floors of Torre Breda in Milan. Key to this project were: the Asymmetrical desk by Piero Lissoni, in which the play of light and volumes combine with the purity and rigour of the supporting solids towards the asymmetrical shapes of the meeting tables; the Ianus managerial office furnishing collection, designed by Luca Scacchetti and characterised by classic lines and crafting of solid wood; the Graphis system, which from as far back as 1968 remains an example of rational design, in line with the era of Italian kinetic art in which it was conceived.

Tecno translates this capacity into effective manufacture to produce products that blend artisan craftsmanship deriving its technique from tradition, such as clamping, smoothing and the application of leather inlays with the most high-performance production technologies. The emphasis on detail and the possibility of customisation and rethinking finishes on the basis of ever new requirements and new technical possibilities spreads this ability to the various levels of production, in which the human factor is seamlessly wedded to that of technological sophistication.

Per Tecno la lavorazione manuale costituisce lo snodo in cui si concentrano tutte le specificità più interessanti del suo “saper fare”, che è un “saper fare bene” inteso come progettare bene, produrre bene, lavorare bene, tenendo sempre insieme esigenze del cliente, del progettista, del luogo. Tecno traduce questa capacità nella efficacia manifatturiera di realizzare prodotti che affiancano lavorazioni artigianali che derivano la loro tecnica dalla tradizione, come la morsettatura, la levigatura, l’applicazione di intarsi in pelle, alle più performanti tecnologie produttive. L'intervento per ING Bank a Milano ha previsto posa e arredo all’interno del “Contact Center” al primo piano della sede. L'arredo prescelto per questo progetto è la serie Beta duepuntozero con piano sagomato in melaminico bianco. The project for ING Bank in Milan involved installation and furnishing in the “Contact Center” on the first floor of the office. The Beta duepuntozero series was chosen for this purpose, with shaped white melamine top. The platforms were designed for the performance of various activities, both individual and collective, whereas the backbones are storage elements, both for display and support for electronic accessories. “Beta” thus recognises a development in the concept of operating system, designed for evolving work environments, which require adaptive and adaptable spaces.

Anche per la sede milanese del suo marchio, dopo quella storica bolognese, Furla sceglie di arredare lo storico Palazzo Ricordi insieme a Tecno, alla quale affida il progetto di revisione degli spazi interni e la fornitura di arredi operativi, direzionali e delle pareti divisorie. Il luogo, ad alto valore comunicativo e segnico, impone a Tecno un trattamento estremamente rispettoso dell'eleganza e della storicità di quelle pareti. Il sistema scelto per gli uffici è Beta duepuntozero in versione bianca, contrapposto al total black degli arredi metallici Basic. Nomos ricompare qui nella versione cromata. Le pareti W80 vengono customizzate così come gli uffici direzionali.

After the headquarters in Bologna, Furla chose to furnish the historic Palazzo Ricordi as the brand’s Milan office together with Tecno, to which it entrusted the project of renovating the interiors and supply of functional, management furnishings and partition walls. The location, with high communicative and semiotic value, obliges Tecno to adopt an extremely respectful approach to the elegance and historical character of the walls. The system chosen for the offices was a white version of Beta duepuntozero, in contrast to the total black of the Basic metal cabinets. Nomos made another appearance here, in its chrome version. The W80 partitions were customised, as were the management offices.

Partitions are among the most interesting milestones in Tecno’s journey of development to meet the new spatial requirements, dynamic and flexible, of contemporary society. Thanks to this expertise, Tecno can satisfy the wishes and needs of private and public-sector clients, architects and contractors all over the world, furnishing the partitions with various specially designed finishes and materials. Acoustic comfort, together with potential for equipment and customisation, are wedded to a practically ideal aesthetic, which discreetly inhabits solutions that are steeped in innovation yet seem to have been there from the beginning. The ease of installation and removal in order to adapt to new requirements and configurations or, conversely, the ability to use various panels on the same profiles demonstrate how each solution is conceived with wide-ranging scope in mind, in terms of space and time. The Tecno research centre supports the efforts of designers, and the result always lives up to expectations: tradition and performance combined in the spirit of Tecno.

Talking about partitions as typology of choice among the sectors in which Tecno especially stands out means confirming their full dignity within settings. As if the action of dividing was in reality the prelude to a multiplication: separating space to increase it.

The flexibility of the E22 systems starting from the 1960s, followed by the introduction of glass in the WB and WG systems in the 1980s and up to the recent W80, designed for use in large construction sites, confirm an absolute leadership from Tecno that, in partitions, finds an opportunity to get to grips with the highest level of technology and the real possibility of doing something new. This explains the many industrial patents that protect the new designs and results that follow from study of the smallest technical details, to give the impression of the greatest lightness and suspension possible. The material and immaterial intersect; solids and voids, inside and out play new roles and lend new names to environments.

Si tratta di cinque piani della nuova sede di Milano in cui W80 è protagonista. Il palazzo, che in precedenza apparteneva alla Regione Lombardia, quando diviene di proprietà di General Electric Real Estate vede l'affidamento del progetto a GaS Architects con il forte mandato di creare un’immagine nuova, distintiva e soprattutto altamente performativa sul piano tecnologico dello stabile. Non è un caso che gli standard in materia di prestazioni energetiche siano un requisito ampiamente soddisfatto e riconosciuto dalla precertificazione LEED Gold. Ma anche i risultati raggiunti internamente all'edificio in materia di qualità lavorativa e design sono significativi. W80 contribuisce e potenzia questo effetto altamente tecnologico, efficiente e solare dell'edificio.

Five floors of the new office in Milan, where W80 is at the forefront. The project for the building, which previously belonged to the Lombardy Region, was entrusted to GaS Architects when it became the property of General Electric Real Estate, with the firm brief of creating a new, distinct and above all high-performance technological image for the premises. It’s no coincidence that the energy standards are a requirement fully satisfied and recognised by LEED Gold precertification. But the results achieved inside the building in terms of quality of work and design are significant too. W80 makes its contribution and boosts this hi-tech, efficient and solar effect of the building.

Tecno was called upon to intervene on the 1300 m² of walls in the new Boston Consulting Group offices with W80, chosen because of its customisability and its physical flexibility, which doesn’t compromise its solidity. Per la meeting room sono stati forniti profili e porte adattati per accogliere vetri LCD on/off. Per le porte è stata impiegata la maniglia FSB, optando per una serratura senza catenaccio, con scrocco. Pulizia, trasparenza e rigore formale rendono questo ambiente altamente funzionale e al tempo stesso estremamente elegante.

For the New York office of the WFW, Watson Farley & Williams, law firm, Tecno intervened on the 30th and 31st floors of the building with W80 in polished aluminium finish with 12 mm extraclear glass. Profiles and doors adapted to house on/off LCD panes were provided for the meeting room. The FSB handle was adopted for the doors, opting for a latch-free lock with limited visual dimensions. Cleanliness, transparency and formal rigour make this an environment that’s highly functional and extremely elegant at the same time.

La sede milanese di Via dei Mercanti viene arredata con W80 doppiovetro nella finitura extrachiaro. L'idea è alternare fasce traslucide sui due lati interni della parete sfruttandone la profondità e creando un effetto tridimensionale che garantisce la massima privacy visiva se l'osservatore si posiziona frontalmente al vetro e maggiore trasparenza attraversando il corridoio se si osserva lateralmente. Un'intuizione che produce un effetto altamente sofisticato.

Between October 2015 and February 2016, Tecno planned the partitions for leading Italian financial institution Citi Italia. The Milan office on Via dei Mercanti is furnished with double glazed W80 in extraclear finish. The idea was to alternate translucent bands on the two internal sides of the partition, exploiting its depth and creating a three-dimensional effect that guarantees the utmost visual privacy if the observer stands in front of the glass and greater transparency crossing the corridor if observed from the side. An intuition that produces a highly sophisticated effect.

The intervention for the new global headquarters of this research institute, located in Marcy-L'étoile, involved the production and installation of all partition walls. A particular characteristic of the W80-Biomerieux project is the substantial customisation both from a technical perspective, for which solutions permitting the achievement of high acoustic performance were installed, and from an aesthetic point of view, with the use of special decorative elements such as solid panels covered in coloured fabric desaturated from 100 to 0, in more than 40 different shades.

The partition project for Lavazza’s headquarters in Turin involved interventions on the ground floor as well as six others. In this case too, it was the double glazed W80 that was used, customised with adjustable blinds and internal pre-spaced films. The profiles feature a special micro-peened anodised finish.

The building that houses the company’s new headquarters, Cino Zucchi’s “Nuvola”, occupies the former Enel industrial zone, reclaiming an extensive area in disuse and avoiding the use of undeveloped land. Progettare luoghi pubblici significa letteralmente tenere insieme questi tre elementi: la progettazione, ovvero il concepimento di una promessa che si concretizzerà in avanti con fattività, utilità, giustezza; il locus che ha una sua identità, ma pure una funzione precisa e un patto con l'abitabilità, anche temporanea, e infine il pubblico, ovvero quella incostante e variabile porzione di vita che dialoga con progetto e luogo. Da ciò dipende la necessità di provvedere al massimo di benessere e qualità possibile per tutti e sempre in aree dove esiste un ricambio dell'utenza in tempi diversi, non permanenti. Dalle origini, Tecno si è trovata più volte a che fare col tema dell'attesa, cercando di combinare la propria personale visione in sintonia con il portato degli studi incaricati. Diversi sono anche i ruoli perciò coperti dall'azienda: da produttore a coordinatore di progetto, fino all'assunzione come general contractor.

Designing public spaces literally means keeping these three elements together: design, that is, the generation of a promise that will find concrete fulfilment later on with effectiveness, usefulness and propriety, the location, which has its own identity, but also a specific function and understanding with its accommodation capacity, and lastly the public, that mutable and variable section of life that dialogues with design and location. This results in the requirement to provide the maximum possible wellbeing and quality for all and always, in areas where there is an exchange of users at different times, not permanent. From its beginnings, Tecno has faced the theme of waiting on several occasions, seeking to combine its own personal vision in harmony with the results from the firms engaged. So the company covers various roles: from producer to project coordinator, to engagement as general contractor.

As always, high technical performance standards and customisation in a wide range of layouts are key to design. Railway stations, airports, subway stations but also waiting or rest facilities for museums. At one time or another, all of us who get about in the world by public transport will have encountered Tecno at least once. But that doesn’t just mean passengers; when it comes to visitors to the Louvre, or Turin’s Lingotto, for example, we’re dealing with more speculative pauses for reflection and contemplation on the part of the visitor. And this is the great thrill of creating a product that will see different lights, faces, odours and uses. Naturally, over the years this requirement has also adapted to the fact that the ways of “exploiting” waiting areas have become increasingly complex, because these spaces dedicated to resting are also transformed into informal work areas, and the variety of technological and interactive solutions that must be envisaged to meet travellers’ needs is always increasing.

Come sempre, alti standard performativi tecnici e personalizzazione in svariati layout sono elementi chiave della progettazione. Stazioni ferroviarie, aeroporti, stazioni della metropolitana ma anche sale di attesa o sosta per i musei. Prima o poi chiunque di noi si sia mosso con un mezzo di trasporto pubblico nel mondo, ha avuto a che fare almeno una volta con Tecno. Ma non si tratta solo di passeggeri; con i visitatori del Louvre, o del Lingotto di Torino, per esempio, abbiamo a che fare anche con pause di riflessione e contemplazione più speculative del visitatore. E questa è la grande emozione di creare un prodotto che vedrà luci, volti, odori e usi diversi. Naturalmente, negli anni questa esigenza si adatta anche al fatto che le modalità di “sfruttamento” delle aree di attesa diventano sempre più complesse, perché questi spazi dedicati alla sosta si trasformano anche in luoghi di lavoro informale e la varietà di soluzioni tecnologiche e interattive che devono prevedere per rispondere alle esigenze del viaggiatore sono sempre maggiori.

The other great design challenge is offered by the fact that the same concept of “waiting” in public spaces must be considered as varying for different occasions: in the context of the railway system, for example, the request for comfort while waiting varies between regional and longer journeys, shorter and longer waits, inside and outside and between any distinct passenger classifications. The scope is even more extensive when the system is adopted for less fluid transport sectors, such as airline transport. The result of this segmentation of requirements is the RS seating design, patented as part of a design collaboration with the SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français). RS was an instant success. The first station to be furnished with this product was that of the Grand Stade de France, in 1998, followed by the Eurostar waiting room in the Gare du Nord, and then by other stations on the French high speed network.

L'altra grande sfida progettuale viene offerta dal fatto che lo stesso concetto di “attesa” nei luoghi pubblici va pensato declinato per occasioni diverse: nell’ambito del sistema ferroviario, per esempio, la domanda di comfort per l’attesa è diversa fra i servizi regionali e quelli a lunga percorrenza, fra l’attesa breve e quella prolungata, fra l’interno e l’esterno e fra eventuali distinte classificazioni di viaggiatori. Ancora più ampio è il ventaglio quando il sistema viene adottato dentro sistemi di trasporto meno fluidi, come quello aereo. Da questa segmentazione di esigenze, nasce il progetto delle sedute RS, brevettate in occasione della collaborazione progettuale con SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français). RS è immediatamente un successo. La prima stazione arredata con questo prodotto è quella del Grand Stade de France, nel 1998; segue la sala d’attesa di Eurostar alla Gare du Nord, e in successione le stazioni francesi dell’alta velocità.

Atocha is the largest railway station in Madrid. The complex expanded through the years. In 1985 a project of complete remodeling began, based on Rafael Moneo's design. In 1992 the original building was taken out of service as a terminal and converted into a concourse with shops and cafés.

Meanwhile, RS continues to be adopted by Spanish, British, Irish and Belgian railways, as well as Austrian railways. RS is used for airport waiting areas too, where Tecno has always been a key player: the RS system features in a range of airport sittings, from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, to Nadi Airport (Fiji Islands), Francisco Bangoy Int’l Airport (Manila, Philippines) and Van Nuys Flyaway (Los Angeles). But there are also the benches designed by architect Ricardo Bofil for Barcelona airport. The seating products for public spaces are all designed to be resistant to wear, but also for easy management of cleaning and maintenance. Adaptability and versatility are essential qualities because it is as though these public spaces lived each day in extraordinary circumstances: maximum concentration of people with the most varying and contrasting physical and aspirational requirements. This expertise earned Tecno a Compasso d'Oro (Italian Industrial Design Association Award) for the coordinated image of Alitalia.

Intanto continua l’adozione di RS da parte delle ferrovie spagnole, britanniche, irlandesi, belghe, e le ferrovie austriache. RS viene nel frattempo anche impiegata per le aree d'attesa aeroportuali, dove Tecno è da sempre protagonista: l’aerostazione di Schiphol ad Amsterdam, Nadi Airport (Fiji Island), Francisco Bangoy Int’l Airport (Manila Philippines), Van Nuys Flyaway (Los Angeles). Ma ci sono anche le panche disegnate dall’architetto Ricardo Bofil per l'aeroporto di Barcellona. I prodotti di sedute per spazi pubblici sono tutti progettati per essere resistenti all’usura, ma anche per avere una facile gestione della pulizia e della manutenzione. L'adattabilità e versatilità sono delle qualità imprescindibili perché è come se questi spazi pubblici vivessero ogni giorno in uno stato di straordinarietà: massima concentrazione di gente con le esigenze fisiche o aspirazionali più polarizzate. Questa expertise varrà a Tecno un Compasso d'Oro per l'immagine coordinata di Alitalia.

The Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français is one of France’s major public-sector companies operating in people and goods transport with 30,000 km of tracks, in engineering and in transport logistics. Quello per l'aeroporto di Schiphol di Amsterdam è un progetto ancora attivo dal 1999. Negli anni sono stati arredati tutti i gates. Il progetto per il rinnovo delle aree di attesa ha preso avvio dallo sviluppo del sistema RS, di cui sono stati modificati gli stampi dei braccioli, create nuove scocche in cuoio e cambiate le misure della seduta e dei tavolinetti. Schiphol airport was the first in which RS seating was used and tested, before going on to become an essential model.

The project for Schiphol airport in Amsterdam has been ongoing since 1999. All the gates have been furnished over the years. The project to renovate the waiting areas started from the development of the RS system, for which the moulds of the armrests were modified, new leather bodies were created and the dimensions of the seat and tables were changed. This made it possible to enhance the seat, making it one of the most robust and flexible, for what is still one of the airports with the most people in transit.

Two different types of benches were developed, designed for both high and low-density waiting areas. In 2013 Skytrax named Schiphol Europe’s top airport and third worldwide.

RS owes its success especially to its suitability for use in both indoor and outdoor environments, and because it was conceived for organising the position and finish of the seats, armrests and tables in accordance with design requirements. The seat has a basic structure to which bodies, both fixed and mobile, in various materials (aluminium, wood, leather, fabric or pressed sheet metal) can be fitted, permitting great adaptability and differentiation in waiting areas.

RS deve il suo successo specialmente al fatto di poter essere impiegabile sia in ambienti interni che esterni, e di essere concepito per organizzare la posizione e la finitura delle sedute, dei braccioli e dei tavolini, in base alle esigenze progettuali. London Bridge is a London hub between a railway terminus, among the oldest in the world, and a tube station: it has nine terminal platforms and six for transfers servicing from south and south-east of London. In terms of passenger arrivals and departures, it’s London’s busiest hub, with more than 54 million users a year. The seats used in the project are RS.

Il materiale scelto per i sedili è l'alluminio pressofuso forato, per consentire la migliore dispersione dell'acqua e con una verniciatura speciale prevista per gli esterni. Le panche sono concepite per occupare il minor suolo possibile. Il disegno originale delle sedute richiama lo schema architettonico della stazione, con le sue tettoie caratteristiche sovrastanti e l'atrio monumentale. Il progetto con cui si crea questa armonia di piccola e grande scala, interni ed esterni, è dello studio Grimshaw Architects.

The material chosen for the seats is die-cast aluminium, with holes to favour the elimination of water and a special paint for the exteriors. The benches are designed to occupy as little ground space as possible. The original design for the seats recalls the architectural layout of the station, with its characteristic canopies overhead and the monumental atrium. The design according to which this harmonious arrangement of small and large scale, interior and exterior, is created is by Grimshaw Architects.

ARTIC — Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center —California For this project, Tecno partnered with leading international architectural engineering firm HOK, who designed the ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) in Southern California, today one of the United States’ most important transport hubs. Tecno provided both outdoor and indoor designs, bringing solutions suitable and adaptable both to the overall design and the many uses of the centre.

Per questo progetto, Tecno è partner di HOK, studio internazionale tra i primi al mondo per architettura ingegneristica che progetta l'ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center) nel sud della California, oggi uno degli HUB di trasporto più importanti degli Stati Uniti. Tecno serve con progetti sia di outdoor che di interni portando soluzioni adatte ed adattabili sia al design complessivo che ai molti usi del centro.

Van Nuys Flyaway Station Van Nuys, California For the Van Nuys bus station, Tecno intervened with the RS system, in line with the system provided for the airport, providing both the seats for the interior and exterior and for the waiting area benches, helping to create a unified image with great integration between covered and uncovered areas.

World Trade Center Ferry Terminal New York The World Trade Center Ferry Terminal is one of the main New York water transport intersections and one of the nation’s busiest hubs. This intervention extended over a waiting area of approximately 2000 m². In this case too, RS seating offered the utmost comfort both for long waits and quick stops and to resist any kind of weather.

Il World Trade Center Ferry Terminal è uno dei principali snodi della viabilità acquatica newyorkese e uno dei più trafficati della nazione. Massachusetts Bay Tranportation Authority Boston, Massachusetts The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is responsible for transport in the Great Boston area. The work to restore the station cost 111 million dollars, to renovate the platforms and improve accessibility, together with the effort to preserve historical characteristics. RS was chosen by Cambridge Seven Associates, who oversaw the work, due to its versatility and formal perfection.

La Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) è l'agenzia pubblica responsabile del trasporto nell'area di Great Boston. Sound Transit Washington State For Sound Transit, a multifunctional station that serves the whole state of Washington, Forms+Surfaces worked with international multidisciplinary firm OTAK to serve the different needs of this complex infrastructure. RS was created in three different configurations, with diagonal and horizontal armrests and benches.

Gateaway Tranportation Center St. Louis, Missouri The Gateway Transportation Station is a joint train and bus station. Inaugurated in 2008 and active 24 hours a day, it’s the biggest in its state. The RS benches are highly structured to become flexible supports for the thousands of passengers who use this space. The design has won many awards, including the “St. Louis Construction News and Real Estate’s Regional Excellence Award”.

La Gateway Transportation Station è insieme stazione dei treni e di autobus. Inaugurata nel 2008 e attiva 24 ore al giorno, è la più grande del suo stato. Le panche RS sono super strutturate per divenire agili supporti per le migliaia di passeggeri che frequentano questo spazio. Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority San Jose, California The intervention concerned the new railway station for San Jose, the city with the fourth largest population in California and home to the most important tech multinationals, for which the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority purchased the RS seating system, a guarantee of flexibility and sturdiness, but also modern and bold aesthetics.

L'intervento riguarda la nuova stazione ferroviaria di San Jose, quarta città californiana per popolazione e sede delle più importanti multinazionali nell'ambito tech, per la quale la Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority ha acquistato il sistema di sedute RS, garanzia di flessibilità, robustezza ma anche estetica moderna e decisa.

El Mirage Police Department El Mirage, Arizona This is an original intervention carried out for the El Mirage police department in Arizona, who in 2013 asked architects Studio 4 Design to take care of their new office design. Si tratta in questo caso di un intervento originale fatto per il dipartimento di polizia di El Mirage in Arizona, che nel dicembre del 2013 chiede agli architetti Studio 4 Design di pensare al progetto di una nuova sede. Tecno viene coinvolta con varie configurazioni di sedute, customizzate appositamente con un nuovo look pulito e moderno e pensato per un uso breve e frequente nel tempo.

Metropolitan Council’s Central Corridor Light Rail Transit System Minneapolis Victoria Street Station is part of the Metropolitan Council’s Central Corridor Light Rail Transit System. Opened to the public in 2014, the Green Line covers 18 km of travel, connecting the Minneapolis and St. Paul business district in Minnesota, where it also includes a stop at the university. Tecno worked with a dual configuration of RS conceived as standing seats for short waits or longer ones.

La Victoria Street Station fa parte del Metropolitan Council's Central Corridor Light Rail Transit System. Aperta al pubblico nel 2014, la Green Line copre 18 km di corsa connettendo il distretto del business di Minneapolis e Saint Paul in Minnesota, dove comprende anche una fermata presso l’università. Tecno lavora con una doppia configurazione delle RS pensate come sedute per attese brevi in piedi o più lunghe.

Downtown Market District Grand Rapids, Michigan The Downtown Market District is a dynamic project to redevelop an area that receives little attention, reconverting it into a centre for various purposes that combines production, distribution, marketing and training focused on local products. The space includes both outdoor and indoor areas and a market that has now become the economic hub of the location. Tecno’s mission was to contribute to this image of a multi-faceted community that draws people together.

Il Downtown Market District è un progetto dinamico di riqualifica di un'area poco considerata, riconvertendola in un centro a vocazione mista che unisce produzione, distribuzione, marketing e formazione rivolto ai prodotti locali. Lo spazio prevede sia aree esterne che indoor e un mercato che ora è divenuto un centro nevralgico economico del luogo. La mission di Tecno è di contribuire a questa immagine comunitaria aggregativa e polifunzionale.
