One of the most rewarding aspects of my work is teaching the tenth grade Confirmation class. The students’ emerging independence and their carefully formulated opinions and ideas make for stimulating and interesting discussions. Each one of these young adults is unique; they are all diligent students, among them are musicians and athletes. Each of them believes they can make a difference in the world, and after spending this year as their teacher, I know they are right.

ARTICLES OF INTEREST President’s Message

Musical Notes

We joined Temple Emanuel in the spring of 1994; I believe it was April. And the first thing we did was enroll our children in the Preschool. To be fair, that particular spring, our son, William, wasn’t yet old enough, but he couldn’t wait for his turn. He became a Yellowbird during the fall of 1995. Like most mothers, I will never forget the day I dropped my youngest off at school. He walked right in, took a quick look around and chose a seat behind a lump of play-doh laid out waiting for him. He then turned to me, waved a little and said, “Bye Mom.” No drama, no tears, but as the second child, he was already very familiar with this school and couldn’t wait for it to be his turn to go.

Chag Shavuot sameach! It is ironic that Shavuot (“weeks”) is such a little-known holiday, given it commemorates the single most important event in Jewish history – the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. We are responsible for "Kabbalat Torah," receiving the Torah and putting it into action in our daily lives. Traditionally, Jews begin the festival by studying topics of Torah on the eve of Shavuot in a format known as Tikkun Leil Shavuot, a gathering to study and learn late into the night. Shavuot marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer. According to the Torah (Lev. 23:15), we are obligated to count the days from Passover to Shavuot. This period is known as the Counting of the Omer. An omer is a unit of measure. On the second day of Passover, in the days of the Temple, an omer of barley was cut down and brought to the Temple as an offering. This grain offering was referred to as the Omer. The Torah commanded that seven weeks be counted for the omer. The counting is intended to remind us of the link between Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, and Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah. It reminds us that the redemption from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah.

His teacher, Mrs. Shipon, turned to me and said, “Well, one down and only eight more to go.” She was referring to the balance of that brand new Yellowbird class. How will the “good-byes” go for the rest of them? (We used to joke…“On the first day of Yellowbirds it is written, by the fifth day it is sealed…who shall be calm, who shall cry…”)

May is the season of college graduations and while I am very pleased to say that many of the members of that class will be collecting diplomas and moving on to the next phase of their lives, either advanced education, jobs or even families of their own, the best part of the story is that many of the friendships that were formed at that play-doh table remain fast to this day.

I see many of my son’s classmates, for they are still our members today. I still see them at Temple events. I can still ask their parents how they are and where they are. It is the blessing of living in a community where people stay and build their lives together. They may have grown up, and they may move away, but they’ll always be a part of our history.

We will mark a few important Temple educational milestones this month. Our 3rd graders will celebrate their consecration service on May 1st. On May 29th, our 10th graders will celebrate their confirmation. In between, we will enjoy listening to the Junior Choir during their Shabbat of music on May 8th. I look forward to these memorable services as we celebrate Chag Matan Torateinu, the festival of the giving of our Torah.

Happy Easter. A phrase you wouldn’t expect to see in one of our bulletins but in fact for the Temple Emanuel custodial staff, it was definitely a Happy Easter. Thanks to a suggestion made

by Judy Matulsky and Rabbi Goldstein, members of the Brotherhood stepped up and volunteered to work on Easter Sunday so that the custodial staff could have the day off.

Special thanks to Mike and Morgan Brodsky for all of their hard work as well as Scott Mallory, Larry and Jordan Hemley, Danny Vogel, Judy Matulsky, Rabbi Miriam Philips, Einat Irelander and everyone else who helped us break down classrooms, move tables and chairs, vacuum and set up for the preschool. Thanks to Steve Fox as well, who coordinated the volunteers. On behalf of the custodial staff, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday during Passover so that they could spend Easter at home with loved ones.

Our Braverman Scholar-in-Residence Lecture is this month!

The speaker is Rabbi Jeffrey Summit, Tufts Hillel Director. His topic will be “Delicious Peace: Coffee, Music and Interfaith Harmony in Uganda.” Please join us for this fascinating morning of discovery on May 3rd at 10am.

Learning doesn’t end with the summer. You are invited to join me for a Talmud class—for beginners and learners of all ages and experience—this July and August. We will meet at 10:30am on Thursdays, beginning July 2 nd. The Talmud is the foundational text of modern Jewish life. It’s full of stories, laws and arguments about the best way to live out Judaism. I hope you will join me as we explore this fun and fascinating book.

SISTERHOOD NEWS Sisterhood President Thank you to everyone who donated to the Sisterhood Judaica Book Drive. Our Social Action Committee chairs, Kim Cooperstein and Rebecca Abbot, realized many of our local schools and libraries did not have many Judaica books available to our young readers. More than 50 books were collected and will be distributed this month. We are very proud of their project and we thank you for supporting this effort!

In reflecting back on this year and as we head into the final planning for our Sisterhood Annual Ways & Means Dinner, it has occurred to me that some of you might not know why we hold the annual fundraiser. YOUTH EDUCATION Religious School News

Preschool News

Registration for the 2015-2016 school year is well under way. More than three quarters of our anticipated students next year have already enrolled. Way to go Religious School families!

If you wish to register your child(ren) for Lillian S. Kessel Religious School next year and did not receive the e-mail inviting you to register, please check your spam mail box. If it’s not there, e-mail Judy Matulsky at jmatulsky@templeemanuel.net or call Trish Grant in the main office. If you are thinking about signing up your child for Religious School and haven’t made up your mind, please feel free to contact me or the Religious School Office at 978.470.1563. We invite potential students to shadow a class and see if our school is the right fit for them—so please contact us!

Spring is finally here and we are so happy the kids can play outside and enjoy our beautiful playground. Learning is also heading outdoors. Our science theme in May is “Birds of a Feather”. The children love exploring their surroundings, observing the birds and looking for their nests while on their nature walks.

We are looking forward to the annual Special Person Breakfast on Monday, May 4th. The Redbirds and Bluebirds will enjoy a breakfast with a grandparent or special adult, sing their favorite songs and share a special activity in their classrooms.

Later this month on Wednesday, May 20th we will have our spectacular school picnic. We love seeing all of our preschool families come together to celebrate a year of friendship and fun.

Our Sunday classes conclude on May 17th with Israel Day. Students learn about Israel while engaging in Israeli dance and song (and maybe eating Israeli food, too). It promises to be a fun, exuberant day. That is the last day of school for the younger students. Sixth to eighth graders have one more class this year on Monday, May 18th.

Youth Programming Hello, my name is Jeremy Fox and I am very excited to take on the position of your new TEMTY Advisor. TEMTY and Temple Emanuel are very familiar to me: not only did I attend preschool at Temple Emanuel, but also I was very involved in TEMTY as a teen. Eventually I held a position on NFTY’s Regional Board.

Many classes embraced a Mitzvah Project this year. Each Kitah Vav (6th grade) class chose a Mitzvah Project as part of the B’nai Mitzvah Kallah in February. Hillary Canner’s Kitah Vav class is raising money for Aaron’s Presents by raffling off a cooler full of things for family summer entertainment. The cooler will be on display and the tickets will be on sale Sundays in May (Sunday, May 3rd - Sunday, May 17th).

Aaron’s Presents gives in-kind grants to young people who develop a mitzvah project, to enable them to help others.

TEMTY is about to be revitalized with many dynamic, exciting opportunities for our teens. The TEMTY Co-Presidents and I have been working hard planning some amazing new events for next year including a total renovation of the TEMTY lounge this summer. We have also re-envisioned our board of leaders and crafted a brand new application process that will allow members to potentially create their own position if they seek the opportunity.

Eighth grade chose the Jewish value of preventing needless animal pain as one of their foci this year. They are holding a bake sale on Monday, May 4th during pizza time (6:40 – 7:00 pm), to raise money for PETA. If you’re here, stop by to support their bake sale.

Our final project this year is to get in touch with all of our active and inactive members, the 8th graders and their families.

We hope to hold a pre-recruitment event this summer in addition to our annual freshman kidnap in September. More info to come!

Lastly, we extend an invitation to all of Temple Emanuel to join us for our annual TEMTY Creative Service on May 15 th. Our Religious and Cultural Vice President, Leah Trachtenberg, and TEMTY members have been working on a wonderful program.

Amy was named one of the Rotary Club of Andover’s “Citizens Who Care” .

She will be honored, along with the other

recipients, at an event on Thursday, May 7th.

The Rev. Richard Burnett, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Columbus, a well-known expert on inter-faith relations will speak during our Friday Sabbath Eve Service on May 8th.

Rev. Burnett graduated from Dickinson College and Yale University Divinity School. He was ordained at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and has served churches in New York and Ohio. Rev. Burnett is an engaging speaker and an important voice on issues of Jewish/Christian dialogue.

The Roberta and Kenneth Braverman Interfaith Fund Presents

“Delicious Peace: Coffee, Music and Interfaith Harmony in Uganda” Guest Speaker: Rabbi Jeffrey A. Summit, Ph.D. is the Neubauer Executive Director of Tufts Hillel. He also holds an appointment as Research Professor in the Department of Music and Judaic Studies at Tufts University. He is the author of The Lord's Song in a Strange Land: Music and Identity in Contemporary Jewish Worship (Oxford University Press) and with Richard Sobol, co-author of Abayudaya: The Jews of Uganda. He has recorded and compiled a CD for Smithsonian Folkways Recordings entitled Abayudaya: Music from the Jewish People of Uganda that was nominated for a GRAMMY award. He has released a CD with video entitled Delicious Peace: Coffee, Music and Interfaith Harmony in Uganda (Smithsonian Folkways Recordings) that was awarded Best World Music CD by the Independent Music Awards. His new book Singing God’s Words: The Performance of Biblical Chant in Contemporary Judaism will be published by Oxford University Press this year. He has served as president of the Hillel professional organization and on the Executive Committee of the International Board of Directors for Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life. For fun, he plays American music on instruments with strings and spends as much time as he can hiking in the mountains with his wife, Gail.
