June 2015 Sivan/Tammuz 5775 Volume XLVI, No. 11 Like us on Facebook It kind of crept up on me… I suddenly from the realized this month marks my 25th Rabbi’s Desk anniversary as the rabbi of Temple Emanuel. That’s a lot of children I’ve seen go from baby namings to bar and bat mitzvahs and now weddings! When we arrived in Andover in the early summer of 1990, my wife and I had two young daughters and a third on the way. I moved from a small congregation to one that was three times bigger. To be honest, I was totally unprepared. Fortunately for me (and the Temple!) my predecessor, Rabbi Roth, left a vigorous and growing congregation. There were some wrinkles to iron out in those early days, but the lay leaders were patient and forgiving, and somehow we muddled through—in fact, we thrived! Temple Emanuel is a different place today than it was in 1990. We have gained members and some have drifted away, but I am Rabbi Robert S. Goldstein convinced we have remained relevant and vibrant because we have always tried to be responsive to the needs of our everchanging community. Among the most important lessons I learned over the years (and there are many) is that there is great wisdom to be found in the “pews.” For me there could be no more meaningful calling than the rabbinate. I have had the privilege of being with my congregants during times of intense joy and deep despair. We have become inextricably linked as we experience those unforgettable moments together. In a few short years we will observe Temple Emanuel’s centenary. I look ahead to that celebration with hope and optimism. We are a strong congregation, blessed with a group of unusually dedicated and talented volunteers. Our people have a thirst for Jewish learning and a desire for a warm and inviting community with whom to celebrate their families’ milestones. And we live in a beautiful corner of the world—the Merrimack Valley is a wonderful place to raise a family. I have much to be thankful for on this “silver” anniversary of my tenure: a daring (but also prudent) search committee that 25 years ago was willing to take a chance on a naive young rabbi. And today, the blessing of serving a community of well over 500 families whose commitment to the sacred values we cherish continues to inspire me every day. I am humbled by the profound honor you have given me through the years. She-hech-eeyanu, vi-kee-ihmanu, vi-hig-eeyanu lahz-man ha-zeh…Blessed is the Creator who has brought us to this milestone…and together, may we continue to go from strength to strength. Rabbi Robert S. Goldstein
