The Boy in the Striped Pajamas follows the life of a little German boy named Bruno. Bruno’s father belongs to the Nazi party in Germany during World War II. Bruno does not understand his father’s work. One day, Bruno finds his family frantically packing. His mother tells him his father has a new job, and they must move away.
After a train journey, they arrive at their new home, but Bruno does not like it. The place is small, cold and lonely. When Bruno looks out his bedroom window, he observes men and boys in striped pajamas. They are behind a tall fence and guarded by many soldiers. Bruno asks his father who those people are. His father tells him they are not people at all and

形容詞主要有兩種用法:一為放在名詞前修飾該名 詞,一為像本句一樣放在 be 動詞後,用來修飾主 詞。一般置於名詞前的形容詞不會超過三個,且還 有一定的擺放順序。基本邏輯是:主觀如 nice, bad, beautiful 這類最可能會改變的形容詞放前面,再接 尺寸、形狀、狀態、年齡、顏色、圖案、國籍、材 質、使用目的等客觀事實描述。本句則屬寫作修辭 手法,因此愈想凸顯強調的放愈後面,先 small,再 cold,最後 lonely。

Bruno meets a young boy named Shmuel on the opposite side of the fence. Shmuel tells Bruno that his family was forced to move. They had to come to this camp in a remote part of Poland. The boys become friends and often talk through the fence. Bruno also brings his friend food because as time passes, Shmuel becomes thinner and weaker.

Bruno’s mother grows restless living in this isolated place. She wants to take the children back to Berlin. Bruno and Shmuel become sad because they have never played together, and now Bruno is going away. So they form a plan. Shmuel brings Bruno a pair of striped pajamas, and Bruno sneaks under the fence. But while the boys are playing, Nazi guards round up the people in the yard. They make everyone, including the two boys, go into a dark room. The doors shut, and the other people in the room panic. Bruno takes Shmuel’s hand and tells him that he is his best friend. Bruno is never heard from again.

Bruno also brings his friend food because as time passes, Shmuel becomes thinner and weaker.

✽ Cook the books,千萬不要以為這是把書本拿 去烹調,cook 除了煮東西之外,還有捏造的 涵義。Books 在這個用語中代表帳本。Cook the books 就是做假帳。例如,The company has been cooking the books for years. 這家公 司作假帳已經很多年了。
✽ 第二次世界大戰當中,非常駭人聽聞的 concentration camp,也就是集中營。Concentration 就是集中,concentration camp 就是 把大量的人群集中在同一個地點的營地,在 二戰中,大量的猶太人遭到屠殺,也就是在 concentration camp 裡面發生的。這類型的集 中營,也有其他的名稱,例如,prison camp 戰俘營,labor camp 勞改營,或是 death camp 死亡營。希望人類可以從歷史當中學到 教訓,避免發生同樣的錯誤。

此單元要介紹英文聽力中的基礎技巧:自然英語三要素。學習者應先了解英語母語者在呈 現句意時會出現的語調起伏,進而理解其語句涵意。以下是教師應先教導學生了解(或學生自 行預習)自然英語三要素的細節:
1. Chunking (Pause)
英語母語者在表達時,絕不是將句子按逐字逐句的方式說出來。而是將句子分成好幾組字 群 (chunks),然後將句子依一組一組的方式呈現。這就意味著有辦法將句子依一組一組的方 式呈現出來,學習者就必須要先知道要將句子中的哪些字詞歸在一組。在唸字組時,中間要停 頓,若在不正確的位置停頓,可能導致聽者會錯意。
例如:Please meet a guy called John Smith at the airport. He is arriving on Friday at about 6 in the evening. Please take him to the train station.
我們可將此句分成幾個區塊:Please meet a guy / called John Smith / at the airport. / He is arriving on Friday / at about 6 / in the evening. / Please take him / to the train station. 如 此唸,語調就會更加清楚明確。
2. Adding Stress
在知道要將句子分段之後,接下來要在重要的字詞上加強重音語調。例如上述例句,練習 朗讀時就可以強調一些重點字:Please meet a guy called John Smith at the airport. He is arriving on Friday at about 6 in the evening. Please take him to the train station
另外,要是將重音放在不同的地方,整句話的意思也可能隨之改變: 句子與重音

3. Changing Pace

講英文時,有些字詞會連在一起很快帶過,有些字詞會刻意放慢速度唸。因此形成以慢速 呈現並強調重點之語調。例如:“There are 23,000,000 people living in Taiwan.” 這個句子 中的重點會是“23,000,000”這個數字。因此為了要強調這個眾多人口的數字,句子就會被唸成 “There are TWENTY-THREE-MILLION people living in Taiwan.” 其中 “twenty-three-million people” 便是講者要強調之處,以拉長音放慢速度加以強調。
本章節要介紹並搭配使用的 AI 工具是《NaturalReader》是一款利用人工智慧技術進行 text to speech 文字轉換到語音的線上工具。使用者可以將文稿剪貼到該平台的空白介面上, 並可依照自身喜好或需求選擇不同的語音(比方說:美國口音或英國口音,男聲或女聲,語 速偏快速的或偏緩慢的等),確認選擇之後,系統便會依照使用者設定將文稿以自然人聲和 語調朗讀出來。這個工具與功能非常適合需要確認英文文稿發音語調的使用者,例如:英文 簡報前須要確認用字的正確發音,或無法親自閱讀又希望聽取電子音檔的學習者。此外,這 個《 NaturalReader 》工具還提供調整語音速度的功能,這對於想精進英語發音或練習跟讀 (shadowing) 的同學尤為有用。
