Tabor improved upon last seasons’ 10th place finish, taking 6th in the KCAC in 2023. The men’s soccer team was led by an experienced group, made up mostly of seniors. After starting out 0-2-1, they won four of their next five games by outscoring their opponents 12-6 in their four wins. After a six-game stretch with one win and two ties, they were able to persevere through it, winning three of their last four games to clinch the #6 seed in the conference tournament.

The Bluejays fought hard, but gave up a couple of goals right after intermission in their 2-0 quarterfinal loss at Kansas Wesleyan to conclude their season with a 8-8-3 record.

Ander Bengoetxea had a memorable season as he was named to the All-Conference Second Team in addition to receiving an NAIA Player of the Week award earlier in the year. He also received recognition as a Second Team Academic All-American by College Sports Communicators. At the end of the year, 10 players received KCAC Scholar Athlete awards and five received NAIA Scholar Athletes awards.

In a season that featured several programs’ firsts, the women’s soccer team had fans on the edges of their seats all year, having 12 of their 19 games decided by 1 goal or less, ending the year with a team record .99 goals against average. The ladies finished with the most KCAC wins in team history with a 7-4-3 record in KCAC play. Tabor was able to grab the fifth seed in the conference tournament. This was the highest finish in 15 years for the Bluejays. Much of their success came away from home, as 5 of their 9 wins came on the road. The ladies ended the year 9-7-3 with a top 100 MRPI for the second straight year. This year's MRPI of 77 was the highest in team history. Playing at Ottawa in the quarterfinals, the game was scoreless through the end of regulation. Tabor had a shot to win it late in the first overtime, but the ball bounced off the post. Ultimately, Tabor lost 4-3 in a heartbreaking penalty kick shootout.

After the season, Tabor placed a team record seven players on the All Conference list. Kylie Bush and Marie Seeger were awarded places on the KCAC Second Team. April Ochoa, Hayley Bench, Payton Eskridge, Raegan King and Sydney Takash were Honorable Mention. As a team, Tabor had 13 KCAC Scholar Athletes and 10 NAIA Scholar Athletes.

The Bluejays won their next game at Sterling, 24-10, then lost their next three games. In the final game of the season, Tabor won a 31-28 thriller at Ottawa that ended with a botched snap on a field goal attempt from the Braves.

After the year ended, Brooks Gardner was named KCAC First Team and First Team AFCA - NAIA All-American Special Teams. Gardner and Brandon King were awarded KCAC Second Team Defense honors. Coming off a four-win 2022 season, the Tabor volleyball team bounced back in a big way, finishing the year with a 15-13 record and eighth place finish in conference. Tabor started the year 4-5, but found a spark at the UHSP, where they won all four games.

After going 6-7 in conference, they found themselves in a first round matchup in the KCAC Tournament at home against Bethany College, a team that they beat in four sets earlier in the year. After a 27-25 first set, Tabor cruised to a three-set victory. That set up a quarterfinal matchup in Hutchinson against Oklahoma Wesleyan. Tabor struggled to find a rhythm in the first set and was never able to recover, falling in three sets to close out their season.

Emma Rhodes was given KCAC Second Team and was honored for her career on senior night, as she surpassed 2,000 career assists. As a team, the Bluejays finished with nine KCAC Scholar Athletes and seven NAIA Scholar Athletes.

Entering the season with seven new players including five true freshmen, the men’s basketball team started the season strong, winning three of its first four games in rather convincing fashion. The beginning of conference play showed potential, but not wins, as the young Bluejays lost five of their first six KCAC games, with three of those being single-digit losses headed into break.

After the new year, Tabor appeared to flip the script, winning four of their next five KCAC games, including an 84-81 overtime thriller over McPherson. Injuries and the tough conference schedule started to take a toll on the Bluejays but were able to pick up a blowout win on Senior Night over rival Friends, in what was their final win of the season. The Bluejays were able to go 7-9 in conference play after the new year.

Following the season, Thatcher McClure was awarded KCAC Third Team and Jack Voth earned a spot on the KCAC All-Freshman Team as well as KCAC Honorable Mention. Tabor had five KCAC Scholar Athletes and four NAIA Scholar Athletes.

Picked to finish first by the coaches in the Preseason KCAC Poll, expectations were high for the Tabor women’s basketball team. After going 3-2 in their first five non-conference games, their defense led the way in KCAC action. They won their first nine KCAC games by an average of 23 points, giving up over 50 points just four times in that stretch. The Bluejays suffered their only conference defeat on Jan. 13, but showed their grit and resilience by winning their last 12 KCAC games. It started with a narrow win against Ottawa and an overtime game at St. Mary’s, included a 68-67 double overtime win against Evangel, and concluded with a 58-43 win against McPherson to secure the KCAC title outright.

Tabor easily took the first two games of the KCAC Tournament, to set up a rematch with St. Mary’s. The Bluejays led for most of the way, but the Spires forced overtime with a late run. Ja’Neysha Hendricks put in a layup with three seconds left that would seal the 72-71 championship victory. At Nationals, Tabor was seeded 12th and faced 5th-seeded LSU-Shreveport in Salina. The Bluejays took a two-point lead with just over eight minutes to go in the game, but couldn’t hold on, falling 69-59.

Tabor took home multiple conference awards, with Alyvia Owens receiving KCAC First Team and Madie McCoy receiving KCAC Third Team. Lillie Veer was named to the KCAC All-Freshman Team, Teegan Werth was named to the KCAC All-Defensive Team and Head Coach Shawn Reed was named KCAC Coach of the Year. Tabor softball began their non-conference season 3-3 after many games were moved or canceled due to weather during the first month. They ran into some steep competition at the Tucson Invitational games, going 1-7 on the trip. The jump in competition appeared to jumpstart the team, as they won four of their next games against conference foes. After that stretch however, they lost eight of their next nine games.

Darcy Gillen, who was 11th in the NAIA in batting average at .491, ignited the offense against Kansas Christian, hitting home runs in each of her first three at-bats in game one, leading to wins of 18-13 and 19-1 in the double-header, then splitting the series against Friends and sweeping York. They won seven of their eight games, including a walk-off home run from Laura Savage against Ottawa in extra innings, to position themselves in eighth place heading into the postseason. At the KCAC Tournament, Tabor dropped the first game against Evangel, but won their next three games by outsourcing their opponents 22-6 to set up a rematch with the Valor, where they fell 6-0 to the eventual conference tournament champion.

Tabor had many players earn All-Conference honors, as Gillen and Savage were first team, Lainee Rae Miller was second team, and Jacqueline Garcia and Lauren Roberts were third team. Gillen and Cheyenne Washington also added KCAC Gold Glove awards. Gillen was also named an NAIA Third Team All-American. The Bluejays had three KCAC Scholar Athletes and three NAIA Scholar Athletes.

In the fall, the men’s tennis team went 2-1 during their three matches in Nebraska, in addition to a few tournaments without a team score. After a coaching change before the start of the spring season, Tabor dropped their first two matches to Concordia and Doane, but responded with a convincing 6-1 win over Hastings.

To start the conference season, they easily won their first two matches at Bethany and Southwestern, but played some tough conference opponents in the next five games, only able to get more than one point in one of those matches. The Bluejays were able to snap their losing skid with a 5-2 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan. A three-match losing streak to close the season ultimately kept them from reaching the postseason tournament, but Ko Osuga finished the year strong, winning his final two singles matches and one of two doubles matches.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Overall Record: 1-16 12th in KCAC Regular Season

The women’s tennis team picked up a 5-1 win in the fall against Baker in a very competitive invite in Nebraska, where they went 1-3. With a midseason coaching change and only five players, Tabor faced an uphill battle to win matches. They dropped their first two matches to Hastings and Doane, both non-conference opponents.

Tabor showed promise in each of their first two matches against Bethany and Southwestern as they won three singles matches in that stretch. While still searching for a conference win, Tara Stewart led the team individually, earning 3 singles wins and 1 doubles win in conference play. Their last nine matches did not go their way as they were unable to secure a victory.

The Bluejays had three KCAC Scholar Athletes and three NAIA Scholar Athletes.

They look forward to building on the successes of this year and are excited for the future of Tabor Cheer.

After a 3-6 road trip to begin the season, the Tabor baseball team rounded into form in their first homestand in a big way, outscoring McPherson 70-20 in the three-game series. They continued their winning ways, winning their next nine games, including series sweeps over York and Bethany. The Bluejays picked up series wins over Sterling and Oklahoma Wesleyan before grinding out a two-game sweep of #18 Freed-Hardeman at a neutral site, helping propel them to an 11-game winning streak, during which Head Coach Mark Standiford picked up his 600th win at Tabor. With the series sweep of Southwestern, the Bluejay baseball team secured the number two seed in the KCAC this year and has now finished in the top three for 15 consecutive years.

At the KCAC Tournament, Tabor won their first game over Avila, but dropped their next two games. The Bluejays landed the third

seed in the Fayette Region in the Opening Round of the NAIA Tournament. After dropping the opener, Tabor won their next game against #4-seed Northwestern on a walkoff, then handled #2-seed Central Methodist and #1-seed Hope International to set up a winner-take-all matchup in a rematch against Hope International to go to the World Series. Ultimately they would lose the game 9-3 to end their impressive season. Across the NAIA, Tabor concluded the season ranked second with a .359 batting average, third with a .463 on-base percentage and seventh with a .582 slugging percentage.

Tabor had many players earn All-Conference honors, as Garryn Plummer, Cody Moore, Tyler Mata Lloyd, Miguel Ramos III and Payton Tinkler were first team, Juan Rosa-Gonzalez was second team, and Marcelo Aguirre, Trotter Boston, Cutter Smith and Garrick Levesque were third team. Plummer and Moore also added KCAC Gold Glove awards at catcher and first base, respectively, and Mata Lloyd was named an NAIA Third Team AllAmerican. As a team, they had 14 KCAC Scholar Athletes and eight NAIA Scholar Athletes.
