Hidden in the grass near the Mary J. Regier building is part of the foundation from Tabor’s first building that burned down on April 30, 1918. On that day the cry was “Tabor is dead.” But as the story goes, someone said “If I had $100, I would give it to Tabor.” Someone else responded, “I do have $100 and I’ll give it to rebuild.” $13,000 was raised that day so that Tabor would live. A year from now, that foundation where I am standing will be featured in the landscaping in front of the new Business and Entrepreneurship Center that will connect a transformed Mary J. Regier building and the Solomon L. Loewen Natural Science building. We anticipate it will be a beautiful blend of the old and new, a respect for where we’ve been, a hope for where we’re going and an opportunity to do something meaningful now.

When Al and Dotty Warkentine received the Alumni Merit Award at Homecoming this year, Dotty referred to Tabor as a “magical place”. She later described to me our “timeless campus” that combines the iconic historical buildings, modern facilities, manicured landscape and vibrant culture as a place where students are prepared for the modern world, but experience a similar amazing community as she experienced 60 years ago, where fun is simple, spiritual lives are formed and lifelong friendships are built.

In my role as President I do many things, but two seem to stand chief among them: keep Tabor on mission and keep Tabor in business. I think we are doing an outstanding job of keeping Tabor on mission. In this edition of the Connection you will read a few examples of current Tabor students who are experiencing the life transforming work of Jesus that Tabor’s academic, extracurricular and residential community are designed to foster. You will also read about recent Tabor science alumni who are thriving in graduate and professional schools. Our Board, Administration, Faculty and Staff are deeply committed to maintaining and advancing Tabor’s

mission of preparing people for lives of learning, work and service for Christ and His kingdom.

God continues to provide employees who share Tabor’s mission. You will read about two of our newest campus leaders who are wonderful additions to the Tabor family: Dale Lemke and Ted Boykin. After thirty years with Clarks Summit University, Ted experienced the pain of seeing his beloved institution close. This is far too common in our country as colleges closed at a rate of nearly one per week in recent years. Frequently, the reason is lack of donor support.

Most every college or university in our country is subsidized by donors. The same is true at Tabor, where what students pay only covers about half the cost of their education. The rest comes from supporters in the form of scholarships, capital campaigns and endowments.

You will read a brief financial and giving update in this edition. You might also be interested to know that over the past five years we have reduced the number of Tabor employees by 17% (20 employees) and reduced expenses by as much as $2 million to get to balanced budgets the past two years. We raised the minimum GPA for acceptance, revamped recruiting messages and scholarship offerings, and recently launched the Transparent Pricing Initiative.

Results so far have been encouraging with record numbers of new students and incoming GPA this year, repeated record retention and record graduate enrollment. We face many challenges with price competition, demographic changes, inflation and accumulated debt. We have a plan to stay financially viable and are making great progress. Our people are resolute in our work, our donors are coming alongside The Next Century Campaign, and we believe that God is on our side. If you have not made a gift recently or included Tabor in your estate, I invite you to participate financially in what God is doing through Tabor.

Completing East Hall and Lohrenz Window Renovations An East Hall remodel and H.W. Lohrenz Administration Building transformation are part of the Capital Project plans of The Next Century Campaign.

Phase 1 renovations have begun in both spaces, with a focus on 16 bathroom remodels in East Hall (plumbing, electrical, and subflooring are now complete) and the replacement of windows throughout the Lohrenz Building.

Dr. Al (fs’60) and Dotty (Penner fs’60) Warkentine have issued a $500,000 challenge gift toward Phase 2 of the East Hall renovations, seeking two gifts of the same value to go toward renovating the bedrooms and upgrading HVAC and electrical. A total of $380,000 has been raised toward the $2 million East Hall renovation.

“We’re grateful for the many gracious donors like Al and Dotty who see the vision of what great facilities can bring to the Tabor community,” said President David Janzen, Ph.D. (g’90). “Renovating East Hall will re-open 64 beds for female students at a fraction of the cost of building a new residence hall.”

After a successful August launch of a #WindowWednesday social media campaign, Tabor has now secured funding of $355,000 toward the $415,000 needed for the Lohrenz Building window replacements.

“The faithful support of our Tabor family has allowed us to keep the Lohrenz Building as a transformative part of our campus community for over 100 years,” said Vice President of Philanthropy Ron Braun (g’75).

“By replacing these windows— along with the projects still to come— we can ensure its viability for future generations.”

East Hall renovations, including bathrooms and other common areas, began in the fall 2025 semester.

Tabor College completes the BEC Mabee Challenge Tabor College has announced the completion of its $1.3 million challenge grant from the J.E. and L.E. Mabee Foundation in Midland, Texas. The grant was issued in support of the college’s Business and Entrepreneurship Center (BEC), which will occupy and significantly expand the former Mary J. Regier Building on the north side of campus.

The college completed the challenge grant by raising $1.38 million ahead of the Jan. 14, 2026, deadline. Over $9 million of the $12 million

required for the BEC has been raised. With construction imminent, excitement is building to fully fund not only construction but all the furnishings, technology and endowment for this project.

“The Mabee Foundation has been an integral partner to Tabor over the past 42 years,” Janzen said. “Meeting this challenge grant in nine months demonstrates the belief our greater college community has in God’s plans for Tabor in the years ahead.”

2024-25 Giving and Financial Overview Thanks to the generosity of Tabor alumni and friends, 3,739 gifts totaling $9.83 million were given in 2024-25, including three gifts of $1 million or more. Seventeen gifts above $100,000 totaled $6.18 million, and 3,636 gifts below $10,000 totaled $1.65 million. Twenty-one churches, representing approximately 20% of the churches in the four USMB districts that control Tabor, contributed a total of $206,385. Tabor students benefit from every gift, whether $50 or $1 million.

Since July 2021, the Next Century Campaign has raised 40% of its goal, aiming to reach $90.68 million by December 2030. Major accomplishments include the construction of Jost Hall and a Maintenance Facility, debt reduction of over $2 million, and over $8 million in unrestricted giving to fund student scholarships. Three endowed professorships have been established, along with a faculty fellow and a partially endowed coach position. Since 2021, endowments for Tabor have grown 50% from approximately $20 million to $30 million, with the goal of reaching $50 million by the end of 2030.

Tabor completed the 2024-25 fiscal year with an operational surplus of $35,465 for the second consecutive year of balanced budgets. As of June 30, 2025, long-term debt stands at $6.79 million.

Health Sciences propelling students into graduate & doctoral work A history of excellence in Tabor College’s science majors breeds opportunities in the minds of its professors.

From the building’s namesake, Professor Solomon L. Loewen (ff’25-71),* to the dedication of the atrium in the name of Will Johnson, Ph.D. (ff’47-91),* the desire of current faculty is to build on the legacy laid before them.

“Our department wants to build syllabi that measure up to the standard and rigor of where these programs have been and where we aspire them to go,” said Thomas Wiese, Ph.D., professor of biology. “We want them to embrace the challenges we put before them as students and to be prepared to live out the mission and vision of Tabor College in their careers.”

Since the current faculty members first arrived in 2020, 20 alumni have completed or are pursuing degrees in family and osteopathic medicine, physical and occupational therapy, and chiropractic care.

Alongside majors in Health & Human Performance, students are thriving on campus and are wellpositioned as they pursue additional education for their careers.

an expansive list of interests among current and incoming students. He noted the importance of a liberal arts education for students interested in pursuing additional degrees.

“Some may be surprised to know there are more liberal arts students who go to professional school and graduate school than those who go to flagship state schools,” Wiese said. “The liberal arts, when properly studied, teach students to think deeply. It’s invaluable, especially when you consider patients who may be discussing complaints or symptoms that are unrelated to their medical condition.”

With diverse interests and skill sets, department collaboration has been key and professors plan to add more in future semesters. “[Ryan Calvert, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology] and I spend much time together talking about what we tried in labs, how it worked and how we can grow,” Wiese said. “We want to ensure that techniques like spectrophotometry are introduced in Chemistry I and Biology I so that we can emphasize that although the object being examined is different, the principles are the same.” *Will Johnson and Solomon L. Wiebe’s expertise demonstrated in entrepreneurship James Wiebe (g’79) has been a lifelong enthusiast of aviation and engineering.

From sitting inside a Cessna 150 piloted by Richard Wall​ (fs’69, ff’77-04) to developing products for the technology industry and​private aviation, Wiebe has soared from his days as a Tabor College student to​now a thriving entrepreneur.

––––––––––––––––––––– Wiebe has served as CEO of six business startups and​ currently leads Radiant Technology out of Wichita, Kan. Recognized by the​Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) for award-winning work, Wiebe’s current​company has developed digital instrumentation for sport, experimental, and​ultralight aircraft.

His work in innovation and technology dates to the late 1970s and is part of a vast catalog of cutting-edge development.

“I liked the idea of inventing something and selling it,” Wiebe said. “I did traditional engineering out of college in Wichita, but I realized I would be better utilized if I went down the path of being self-employed. It was a lot more fun and I felt it was what I was called to do.”

Wiebe recently introduced a CO-Pocket carbon monoxide​detector alarm for the general aviation sector.

“I introduced [the detectors] about six months ago and it​has taken off,” he said. “We’ve become one of the largest manufacturers of​non-TSO and non-PMA carbon monoxide detectors on the market.”

Wiebe is currently involved in product development for​ radio technology that would enable automated verbal messages to be delivered to​the cockpit.

“I liked the idea of inventing something and selling it,” Wiebe said. “I did traditional engineering out of college in Wichita, but I realized I would be better utilized if I went down the path of being self-employed. It was a lot more fun and I felt it was what I was called to do.”

“If you’re getting a clearance and you’re busy and​distracted, you can see it scroll by,” Wiebe said. “I’ve got someone in Wichita​working on an AI hardware and software engine that will do the interpretation​of​it using technology that’s open source called Wispr and the Jetson Nano,​which is a small AI engine that Nvidia sells.”

James Wiebe (g’79) is a serial entrepreneur, serving as CEO to six different startups based in the Wichita, Kan., market. Today, he leads Radiant Technology, which designs and manufactures lightweight digital instruments for sport, experimental, and ultralight aircraft. science courses. He took​mathematics courses from Frank Brenneman, Ph.D. (ff’74-08), faculty emeritus,​and​even turned his senior dormitory into an entrepreneurial incubator when​he and Marlin Deckert (g’80) began creating a computer-related business venture.

“I made the major what I felt like it needed to be for my interests and it lined up with what I wanted to do when I got out of school,”​Wiebe said. “The math portion of what I learned was invaluable. What I learned​in Calculus I was foundational in so many things that I see in the world.”

Wiebe, the son of longtime English professor Katie Funk​Wiebe (ff’67-89), interned at the Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, as​a Tabor student. He now calls the ‘Air Capital of the World’ home as he continues to grow his businesses.

“Tabor provided a foundation for me to look around and grow intellectually and spiritually,” Wiebe said. “Some of that continues to this day, but I truly love the people I met and learned from while at Tabor.”

M.Ed. impact stretching beyond teacher education Seven students were what was asked of David Stevens, Ed.D., at the outset of the Master of Education in Neuroscience and Trauma program.

Launched in summer 2021, the program more than quadrupled the initial goal with 34 students in its first cohort.

That number has held steady, and in the current cohort, 47 students have the program ‘bursting at the seams.’

Originally built to equip teachers with instruction in neuroscience and psychology, the M.Ed. has expanded in careers such as social workers, police officers, pastors, therapists, and parents raising foster or adopted children.

“Often, we see students looking for trauma-only programs, but then are caught off guard when they see our degree name,” Stevens said. “They check if it’s for teachers only as an M.Ed., but when we share the growth, we’re seeing people from so many professions who live or work alongside survivors of trauma.”

The program’s growth has led to multiple start dates, which now include January and May. Starting in fall 2022, a Certificate in Neuroscience and Trauma began for continuing education units (CEUs) and other professional development courses.

Each full-time, part-time, or adjunct faculty member who began teaching at the program’s inception is still instructing. They’ve added two more over the past year, bringing that total to 11.

Over the fall, Tabor also introduced its first course through the degree that is catered to first responders. The shared belief among M.Ed. faculty is that this program has made a global impact in equipping students to walk alongside trauma survivors.

“It’s not just a degree to further your career, it’s a degree to be better for other people,” Stevens said. “If you can gain those skills, that’s life work.

The program perfectly aligns with the mission of Tabor and who we are called to be as followers of Christ. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this.”

New entrepreneurial ventures were created from the program when a student from the first cohort brought her training back to her school district, and her superintendent agreed to implement it. That also included the addition of a safe room.

Stevens originally aspired to start the program at prior institutions, but as he later discovered, the no’s he was given were because of how God planned to bring the program to Tabor and central Kansas.

“There are times when I sit back and pinch myself,” Stevens said. “All I did was present my idea for this program, and now I get to sit back and watch God work miraculously through the lives of our students.”

M.Ed. Graduates Around the World Kelly Tyson (tcg’23)

Before Kelly Tyson’s (tcg’23) enrollment in the M.Ed. program, she and her husband, Ben, adopted three kids out of foster care, adding to their three biological children.

Their family went through an extended period of intense crisis directly related to trauma in the lives of their adopted children. The season was immensely isolating, wondering if other families had ever faced something similar. Going before the Lord, Tyson asked Him to show ways to support other adoptive families and it was then she learned of the M.Ed. in Neuroscience and Trauma at Tabor. While she wasn’t sure how she’d use the program, God was clear that it was the path for her. Tyson said the M.Ed. not only taught her new ways of understanding and interacting with ‘hurting’ people but led her to profound levels of personal healing.

About a year after graduating, Tyson opened her business, BrainTLC, to offer support and guidance to adoptive families in crisis. She also leads trainings for churches, educators and parents in trauma-informed practices. She also recently became the Family Training Specialist with the Kansas Post Adoption Resource Center (K-Parc).

Tassanee Sanchez, Ed.D. (g’20, tcg’22) After completing her M.Ed. in Neuroscience and Trauma in 2022, Sanchez (g’20, tcg’22) reached out to David Stevens, Ed.D., director of neuroscience & trauma programs at Tabor, about continued learning. Three years later, she was the youngest female student to earn her doctorate (Ed.D.) at Liberty University (Va.) in spring 2025. Sanchez grew up in the mission field alongside her parents, Ricky and Karen, and three siblings, cultivating a heart for service and bringing the love of Jesus Christ around the globe. Having watched her mother start an orphanage in Thailand for HIVpositive children, many of whom carried significant trauma, Sanchez felt a calling to study these situations further. As part of the community care and counseling doctoral program at Liberty, including a specialization in traumatology, she wrote her dissertation on human trafficking as a relevant, societal topic. A gift to support Mennonite Brethren Students A scholarship previously available only to Mennonite Brethren students from Oklahoma has now gone nationwide, thanks to the generosity of Bryan (g’73, fb’73-89) and LaVonne (Heinrichs fs’73) Kroeker.

Beginning in fall 2026, up to 50 students who attend Tabor and have at least one parent as a member of a church affiliated with the United States Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches (USMB) can receive an additional $2,180 annual scholarship. This can be added to other scholarships including the Tabor 20 scholarship for those who are eligible.

The excitement of these scholarships is indicative of the growth in Mennonite Brethren enrollment, which reached 74 students for the fall 2025 semester. It’s the first time Tabor has surpassed 70 constituent-church students since 2017.

“We are so pleased to see the number of USMB students coming to Tabor increasing,” said President David Janzen, Ph.D. (g’90). “The Kroekers’ gift will play a critical role in preparing future leaders for our constituent churches.

Combined with the Graduate Studies in Ministry (GSM) Initiative underway and a full master’s program expected to be approved in 2026, we’re excited about seeing future generations of USMB students and pastors earn a decidedly Christian education at Tabor.”

Launching the Transparent Pricing Initiative for fall 2026 Beginning in fall 2026, Tabor College is setting its AllInclusive Price at $29,500, a $20,000 reduction from previous plans. At most higher education institutions, students receive a complicated and confusing bill that can contain hidden and unforeseen expenses. Tabor offers one of the best pricing models in Christian higher education, showcasing our affordability and that a Tabor College degree is well within reach.

The Transparent Pricing Initiative builds on recent record annual fund giving, the opening of a new residence hall, the launch of the Central Kansas Entrepreneurship Center, a 93% fall-to-spring record retention rate, and a 19% increase in full undergraduate enrollment.

“This change is an investment in access,” said President David Janzen, Ph.D. (g’90). “Students who may have ruled out a private Christian college because of cost will now see that Tabor is well within reach. Many of our students, from all socio-economic backgrounds, graduate with zero debt.

The Transparent Pricing Initiative is about opening doors — not just to a degree, but to a transformative community that shapes faith, character, and calling.”

Introduced in 2019, the All-Inclusive Price bundled all basic student costs, including tuition, food, housing, books, laundry, and parking. The Transparent Pricing Initiative reaffirms Tabor’s commitment to affordability, transparency, and value through a single, simplified price.

A lower listed cost demonstrates affordability for students who may have viewed private Christian education as financially unreachable. Competitive scholarships and financial aid will further reduce costs, affirming that a high-quality, decidedly Christian education is within reach, allowing more families to consider Tabor without the fear of overwhelming debt.

Transparency ensures a clear price with no hidden fees for current and prospective students. Families will know what to expect from the beginning, making it easier to compare colleges and make confident, informed decisions.

Value reflects Tabor’s continued commitment to a transformative experience that produces significant financial and relational returns. According to Higher Ed Value Metrics, Tabor is one of the top private colleges in Kansas for economic mobility. New Leadership in Academics & Student Life Boykin excited to guide, mentor students With over 20 years of experience in higher education student affairs and development, Ted Boykin, M.Div., was introduced as Tabor College’s new dean of student life, learning, and formation this summer. Boykin succeeded Ian Thomson, who concluded his tenure in December 2024.

A career-long commitment to Christian education led Boykin to Tabor’s campus, and he said the Lord’s leading was evident from the start.

“What excites me most about Tabor College is its compatibility with my mission,” Boykin said. “I believe God has called me to shepherd people into Christ-likeness and service through discipling, teaching, counseling, and administration. Coming here is a great opportunity to continue to do those things for God’s glory.”

1977 Volleyball

Six years after the program’s inception, the 1977 Bluejays won their firstever KCAC championship. Head Coach Jana Clark was hired in 1974 and the team flourished under her leadership, finishing with a 24-8 overall record and a 15-1 mark in conference play. In the third of four wins over rival Bethel College, they brought the KCAC title to Hillsboro for the first time. Colynn (Kyne g’78) Foreman was named the team’s most valuable player, while Deena Miller and Rachel (Schultz g’79) Griffith earned all-conference honors.

2005 Volleyball

The 2005 Bluejays received the program’s first-ever berth in the NAIA National Tournament after winning a fifth-straight KCAC regular-season title. Tabor took off in its conference schedule, winning 18 of 19 matches.

Staci (Whitcomb g’06) Frick was named KCAC player of the year and also received unanimous first-team conference honors. Jill Hein (g’06) joined her teammate with first-team recognition, while Lindsey (Vogts g’07) Begnoche earned second-team honors. The Bluejays were the first to win the regular-season and tournament championship and receive a berth to the NAIA National Tournament within the same season.

Amy Ratzlaff, Tabor Volleyball Coach

As the winningest coach in Tabor volleyball history, Amy Ratzlaff held an astounding 368-227 overall record and 266-84 KCAC mark over her 19 seasons as head coach. The Bluejays won eight regular-season conference championships during her tenure and won their fourth conference tournament championship in her final season. The program accumulated over 70 all-KCAC recognitions, three NAIA All-Americans, five KCAC Players of the Year, and 90 KCAC and 61 NAIA Scholar-Athletes.

Kelyn (g’14) and Marissa (Hiett g’15) Vix have lived and worked in South Asia for the past seven years. They are involved in a handicraft business that works to prevent human trafficking in a remote area and also operate a guest house. In 2025, they hosted Tabor students to further the social impact of their work.

Ron Braun (g’75)

Ron Braun’s (g’75) heart for service and advancement has embodied his professional career and 15 years at Tabor College. Now serving as vice president of philanthropy, Braun is deeply tied to historic fundraising efforts, helping raise critical funds for students to fulfill Tabor’s mission to prepare people for a life of learning, work, and service for Christ and His kingdom. Before working at Tabor, Braun and his wife, Dena (Suderman g’76), spent the first three of 20-plus years in roles with MCC (starting in Bangladesh) and the Southern District Conference of Mennonite Brethren churches.

Dr. Al (fs’60) and Dotty (Penner fs’60) Warkentine

Dr. Al (fs’60) and Dotty (Penner fs’60) Warkentine’s careers spanned over four decades, impacting the greater Fresno, Calif., area with their God-given gifts in dentistry and performing arts. As passionate supporters of Christian higher education, the Warkentines’ $1 million gift, among other gifts, began an endowed professor challenge that led to over $5 million and Tabor’s first three fully endowed professorships in 2023.

Beachy, Shafer named NATS finalists Tabor College has seen at least two students advance to the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Finals for the third straight year. Seniors Zach Beachy (Peoria, Ariz.) and Viggo Shafer (Wichita, Kan.) finished second and third, respectively. Shafer is now a four-time semifinalist and twotime finalist, while Beachy earned his first finalist nod in just his second NATS appearance.

The duo was part of a group of 12 Tabor singers who competed at the University of Wyoming (Laramie, Wyo.). Joining them in the semifinals were Shay (Sullivan) Callaway (SR, Bixby, Okla.), Taylin Cannaby (FR, Wichita, Kan.), Rylie Driggers (JR, Hillsboro, Kan.), Aden Frederick (JR, Scott City, Kan.), Galilea Martinez (FR, Ulysses, Kan.), Stephanie Mejia (SO, Ulysses, Kan.), Lexi Milne (SR, Inman, Kan.), and Gage Patty (SR, Wichita, Kan.).

Since 2022, Tabor has earned 28 semifinal selections, nine finalists, and three championships.

“I love how all of these students perform, collaborate, and support each other,” said Director of Choral Activities Gregory Zielke, D.M.A. “They’ve all been very successful, they learn and grow along the way, and they represent the Lord and our college so well. They’re a stellar group.”

Beachy, who placed second in musical theatre, said he’s grateful to have reached the finals in his last opportunity to compete.

“This recognition means so much because it affirms the hard work and growth I have dedicated myself to during my time at Tabor,” he said. “I’m grateful to God for the opportunity to use the gifts He has given me to glorify His name.”

Shafer, who placed third in classical, is thankful he had another chance to compete and for the honor of reaching the finals a second time.

“God allowed me to sing in such a beautiful place and with a talented pianist like Jenny Epp,” he said.

“Despite obstacles, I was blessed with people who helped me progress and land third place. I thank my teachers, peers, and God for supporting, encouraging, and ultimately giving me the ability to sing and place.”

A Baseball Brotherhood

Brayden Berens (SO, Pratt, Kan.) and Dellen Claassen (SO, Newton, Kan.) leading teammates in player Bible study An opportunity to play college baseball has led to deeper relationships than Brayden Berens (SO, Pratt, Kan.) or Dellen Claassen (SO, Newton, Kan.) could have ever imagined.

Berens’ calling into ministry and friendship with Claassen opened the door to a player-run Bible study as freshmen, which is now bringing 20 or more players together. Members of the roster meet in the Bluejay Suite in the Pendery Athletic Center, creating a space to seek an identity off the field.

“We all love baseball, but what happens when you go 0-for-4 or 0-20 over a week’s worth of games?” Berens said. “We’re able to look past

Faith is the commonality of a roster of almost 70 players that spans over 3,000 miles.

That’s where his faith began.”

Over the past year, they’ve led multiple teammates to the Lord. One particular moment sparked the “why” for Berens when he saw a hunger for the Gospel spread faster than he could have imagined. “[This teammate] texted me and said, ‘Hey, I just got off the phone with my dad, and he wants to learn more about Christ,’” Berens said.

“God is doing such big things already on campus, and we’re only a few months in.”

With aspirations of serving in the church, Berens is motivated by encouraging his teammates in their spiritual walk.

“We often ask about church background, and while a lot have experience with it, we have had some say it’s the first time they’ve held or opened a Bible,” Berens said. “When you talk about those things, and you’re able to be vulnerable with one another, it connects you on a deeper level.”

Berens recalled pitching last year in a varsity game, and when the game sped up and pressure mounted, shortstop Isaiah Cohens (g’24, tcs) would make a mound visit to speak with Berens.

“We had talked so much and gone deep with one another,” Berens said.

“Encouragement means so much more when you have those shared experiences off the field and he’s there to tell you, ‘Hey man, you’ve got this.’”

Both spoke to the leadership of the 2025 seniors, echoing the work the 26 departing players made in furthering the goals and mission of the baseball program.

“Last year’s seniors were incredible for us,” Claassen said. “It’s very rare to have almost 30 seniors, and when they open up to you and care for you as a younger player, it’s pretty cool.”

A New Beginning

Paul baptized on campus, celebrates with family and friends Harley Paul (JR, Plains, Kan.) headed home to Plains, Kan., not knowing what was next. Having just finished her freshman year at Ottawa University, Paul chose to transfer, and she stopped at Tabor College. She made a campus visit on the same day she moved out of her freshman dorm.

Paul signed to join the Bluejay volleyball team that same day, opening the door to a life-changing decision.

Although Paul attended church sparingly before high school–often when she visited her grandmother in Texas–she chose Grace Community Fellowship in Hillsboro as her home congregation following a Tabor Sunday.

Carson Center legacy embedded in missions and service Mennonite Brethren and Krimmer Mennonite Brethren elders together sought a home for theological and liberal arts education and Tabor College was born from that vision. Heinrich Voth, the first pastor of what was later known as Carson Mennonite Brethren Church in Delft, Minn., was a member of that group.

Even as the church closed its doors in 2005, the relationship between it and Tabor remains today, as the Carson Center for Global Engagement was named in its honor. David A. (g’60) and Paul D. (g’60) Wiebe proposed the center to the Tabor College Board of Directors and it officially opened in 2006. Students learn about becoming globally minded and skilled graduates while participating in missions and service projects.

The rich history of the congregation and its Mennonite Brethren roots provided vision for what the center has now become, emboldening the leadership provided by Craig Jost (fs’86), M.Div., the center’s director.

“At the heart of this is how much I love seeing transformed lives,” Jost said. “We want students to see the world as a much bigger place and not be overwhelmed by that but guiding them to see what God is doing in their lives and each place they visit.”

After global trips were canceled throughout the pandemic, attendance has substantially increased, with over 30 students participating in trips to Uganda, Southeast Asia, and three separate groups in Europe.

Whether it’s academic, missional, service-based, or vocational, students are experiencing Jost’s vision of seeing them experience the church in a global context.

“Students may say they don’t see themselves as a traditional missionary,” he said. “However, we aspire for them to learn how to be missional in a cross-cultural context with the gifts God gives them.”

With trips to Indonesia, Turkey, and Peru lined up for 2026, Jost said all trips remain open to alumni.

Desiring to grow participation even further, Jost hopes that all Tabor students would consider taking at least one trip while they’re on campus.

“It’s enriching for students, staff, and/or alumni to walk into these countries and see what God has and is doing within these locations,” Jost said. “From the time missionaries arrive, you can see how He prepared the soil to bring His light into a challenging place.”

Kyle (fs’08) and Danae (Warkentin g’09) Schmidt are missionaries through Multiply, partnering with local churches and King’s Kid Home and School in Uganda. They are working with partners Robert and Esther Mponye--pastors and founders of the school-- to develop sustainability initiatives in and out of the classroom. The school itself offers a Jesus-centered education, providing education and vocational training. Among other economic initiatives, they launched the King’s Kid Poultry Project to raise hens and meet the financial needs of students and those in the church community. David Schroeder (g’64) provided the following address during the 2025 American Psychological Association and Division 21 meeting in Denver, Colo., on Aug. 8. “Exploring Aviation Human Factors: Disorientation, Alcohol, ATC, General Aviation, and Maintenance.” He received the Franklin V. Taylor Award for Outstanding Contributions in the Field of Applied Experimental/ Engineering Psychology.

1970s Valerie Rempel, Ph.D. (g’78) delivered the keynote address at the spring Commencement ceremony for Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind. Rempel is the director of accreditation for The Association of Theological Schools in Pittsburgh, Pa. She formerly served as the vice president and dean of Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary.

1980s Lyndon Vix (g’82, fb’88-18) was appointed to the Kansas Supreme Court’s Admissions Review Committee. Vix is a member of Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson & Kitsch, LLC, in Wichita, Kan., and has been practicing since 1985. He also received board emeritus status after his 30-year term on the Tabor College Board of Directors.

1990s Chad Christensen (g’95) was inducted into the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame after 28 years of coaching baseball in Kansas, 15 of those years as the head coach at Maize South High in Wichita, Kan.

2000s Sara (Cook g’01, fst’01-07) Lyon and the NMC Health marketing team were recognized for excellence by the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators through its Emerald

She serves as product marketing specialist at NMC Health, and the team won Best of Show for their year-long wellness campaign called “Say Yes to Your Health.” The team took home an additional four Emerald Awards and a Certificate of Merit for their work. She was the recipient of the LIFE Award in June 2025 by NMC Health. The LIFE (Live It Fully Every Day) Award is presented to nonclinical employees who consistently go above and beyond their duties, embodying the fundamental values of respect, excellence, service, and trust.

Justin Hiebert (g’07) was named MB Foundation ministry representative in California’s Central Valley. He previously pastored Garden Park Church (2012-17) in Denver, Colo. They are now a part of Heritage Bible Church in Bakersfield, Calif., where his wife, Elise (Penrose g’08), serves as worship director, and he recently served as interim executive pastor.

Steven Lautt (g’07) was appointed to an open judgeship in the North Central Judicial District in North Dakota, representing Burke, Mountrail, and Ward Counties. After graduating from the Washburn University School of Law (Kan.) in 2012, Lautt practiced as an attorney and shareholder with the Minot, N.D., law firm, Pringle & Herigstad.

2010s Gallagher Martin (g’19) was named the head girls’ tennis coach at Hillsboro High School (Kan.).

Pavel Zinchenko (fst’16-18, tcg’18) was named the head women’s tennis coach at the University of South Dakota. After beginning his coaching career at Tabor, he returned to his alma mater at Emmanuel College (Ga.) before becoming the head women’s coach at Delaware State Univ. (Del.). His most recent stop was a two-year stint as assistant coach for the Colorado State University (Colo.) women’s tennis team.

2020s Terran Hoyt (g’20) was inducted into the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association (KBCA) Hall of Fame alongside her mother, Shelly, and the 2014 & 2015 Hoxie High School (Kan.) teams. Both teams completed 26-0 seasons and aided a stretch of 107 consecutive wins, which stood as the state record until 2021.

Hoyt was recently named an assistant coach for Oklahoma State women’s basketball after spending the previous three seasons as the Cowgirls’ director of basketball information. Her sister, Jacie, is the program’s head coach.
