QUESTIONS Where are people truely from? Is it where you stay?

Or is home really where the heart is? Why is there such a prejudice where others are from? Should we think of others differently based on that? Why is where your ‘from’ apart of your identity? Should it be? How do we understand people differently by traveling?

Title/Tagline

DEEPLY ROOTED Your places and roots. Where do you feel grounded in life? It’s a big question with even broader answers. There’s the saying “Don’t forget your roots.” Yet, why is that such a big part of your identity? Can this change how others view you? We explore this through our speakers who’ve seen many others and their explaination of their roots.

Depth, Roots, Botanic

ROOTED RESIDENCE Where’s your place in life? Think of where you live now, is it your hometown residence? Or perhaps its somewhere completely different. See the different perspectives on life based off of what residences our speakers talk about. You might not realize how you view others and life soley based on where they’re ‘from’.

Rustic, Home, Produced

PLANETED HEART Is home really where your heart is... Or is it something more physical? A home town or a new city, or even a sense of purpose gives us our feeling of home. We explore the different walks of life through our speakers and how this has affected their view of others. Maybe your perspective of home will change too.

Crafted, Messy, Expressive

TRAVELING ROOTS The places everyone has gone. Everyone has a different walk of life, but do we really think about this often? Not quite. Engaging with others through travel and communication can bring us together on a new perspective to where people are from.

Organic, Aged, Handmade

CALL HOME Where are you really from? Think of who and where you think of when you’re homesick. It’s not just the place itself, but the people and the culture. This place can even be somewhere that you’re not exactly ‘from’. How can we think of home differently?

Placed, Cutted, Narrative

MIGRATED HEART Born and rasied, and went away. When someone asks where you’re from, you think of where you were born. Others however, might say something entirely different. The answers could be from a house, to a van, to even simply “Nowhere”. Explore this entirely new way of viewing the world and others based off of stories, memories, and what home really is.

Adventure, Explore, Migrate

ALL TOGETHER DEEPLY ROOTED Your places and roots. ROOTED RESIDENCE

Where’s your place in life?

PLANTED HEART Is home really where the heart is... TRAVELING ROOTS The places everyone has gone. CALL HOME Where are you really from? MIGRATED HEART Born and raised, and went away.

Audience

Who would come to the conference?

Maria Perez AGE: Middle Aged (35-50) OCCUPATION: Professor in Sociology at the University of Arizona HOBBIES: Sewing Club, Cooking, Antique shopping, Watching Soccer HOUSEHOLD: Has 2 Kids (both moved out), Live at a small suburban home with her 8 year old Shih Zhu and 3 year old cat. FAVORITE BEVERAGE: Matcha Latte from the local coffee shop. FAVORITE CONVERSATIONS: Giving some advice to people in need.

Maria Perez Maria is completely facinated in the idea of how the human race communicates with one another. Her profession couldn’t be any more perfect for her. She loves deep diving into the theories on how people as a society operate. What she loves even more than that is seeing her students thrive in her calm yet fun lecture setting. After a day of sharing her knowledge and passions she’ll head home to her sweet pets that she adores as much as her kids. Maria will be watching the conference with the perspective of hearing other people stories, and being able to use that to help understand others even more than she does now. She also wants to use this to help her students be more aware of how people’s stories can be a greater impact to the world around them.

Sam Hutson AGE: Young adult (20-35) OCCUPATION: Photograper and Film maker HOBBIES: Music buff, Traveling, working out, walking his dog, Collecting state labeled shot glasses, HOUSEHOLD: Lives in a one bedroom loft with a 2 year old Husky and his long time girlfriend Stacy Wallace. FAVORITE BEVERAGE: Half and Half Iced Tea with a lemon. FAVORITE CONVERSATIONS: Getting to know a stranger in a brand new setting (preferably in public).

Sam Hutson Sam is very much an extrovert inside and out. Going places, talking to new people is his jam. From traveling to going to concerts, he can find a conversation to have with just about anybody. He loves traveling, and when he does he prefers roadtrip style. That way Sam can enjoy the scenery on the way to his destination, while also getting to know more people in the local areas. As a photographer, he’s mostly inspired to take portrait photos of people around the country. Stories and destination are in his top interests, so coming to this conference will give him even more people to know and more connections down the road. He’ll also like to self reflect on the idea of his traveling life and what more it can bring to his communication.
