Tata & Howard Recognized

by Zweig Group as One of the Fastest Growing Engineering Firms in Nation

Tata & Howard has been awarded a Zweig Group Fast Growth Award for 2016. The award is based on both revenue and firm growth over the previous three-year period.

Contributing to its record growth, Tata & Howard acquired the assets of Leach Engineering Consultants of St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 2013 and Roald Haestad, Inc. of Waterbury, Connecticut in 2014, and opened its newest satellite office in Austin, Texas in 2015. The firm also nearly doubled its staff.

The conference will be held September 22-23 at the Arizona Biltmore.

Environmental Services in Worcester, MA T&H is currently providing environmental services consulting to a private client in Worcester, Massachusetts. As part of the client’s due diligence associated with purchasing a vacant former machine knife manufacturing plant in Worcester, Tata & Howard drilled soil borings, installed monitoring wells, and collected soil and groundwater samples from the Site for laboratory analyses. The results of the environmental testing program indicate that a release of petroleum had occurred from a former fuel oil fired heating system and affected soil within a small portion of the Site adjacent to an abutting building.

Due to the proximity of the building and other access constraints, excavation of the contaminated soil was deemed to be cost prohibitive. Tata & Howard evaluated various remedial action alternatives and ultimately recommended in-situ chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate. The objective of the remediation is to reduce the overall mass of contamination and eliminate the potential for petroleum vapors to affect the indoor air quality of the abutting building. The first round of injections has been completed, and within the next several weeks Tata & Howard will re-test the soil to evaluate the effectiveness of the in-situ remediation.

Interceptor Sewer, Danbury, CT The Oakland Avenue sanitary sewer project consists of jacking a 48-inch steel casing pipe through the Interstate-84 embankment in Danbury, CT and installing a new 24-inch sanitary sewer to replace the existing 16-inch sewer that is undersized. The project will alleviate the restriction that is causing sewer overflows. Services included surveys and mapping, review of easements, review and updating of original design, preparation of plans and specifications, bidding, construction administration, and resident observation. Construction is currently underway and the project is expected to be completed by the end of this October. The new sewer line installation will complete an interceptor project that was constructed in 1994.

We Love Babies!

On June 1, 2016, at 2:17 in the morning, Project Manager Justine Carroll, P.E. and her husband Mike welcomed Juliet Cecile Carroll into the world. Juliet weighed 9 lbs. 7 oz., measured 22 inches long, and both she and her mom are doing great. Justine is currently on maternity leave, but has brought Juliet into the office to visit a couple of times.

Justine plans to return to Tata & Howard this fall.

International Beer Day was August 5th, and some T&H team members celebrated by heading to Harpoon Brewery in Boston, Massachusetts after work to participate in a brewery tour and tasting. Like Tata & Howard, Harpoon Brewery became an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) company in 2014, and the two companies enjoyed sharing ESOP conversation over a beer for International Beer Day.

In Memoriam Eric Pellatz Memorial Scholarship In May of 2016, Eric Pellatz, son of Tata & Howard Associate Randy Pellatz, P.E., passed away. To honor Eric’s memory, Randy, his wife Gayle, and their daughter Abby have established a scholarship through the Coconino Community College Foundation in Eric’s name. The “Eric Pellatz Memorial Scholarship for Students with Disabilities” will continue in perpetuity at Coconino Community College to honor Eric’s lifelong passion for helping others with disabilities. Tata & Howard is providing engineering services associated with the permitting, design, and construction of the Ronnie Berlack Center, a new indoor/outdoor training facility for the students at the Burke Mountain Academy (BMA) in East Burke, Vermont. The new facility will add 14,775 square feet of training and functional space to the campus, including 6,100 square feet of turf field and 4,700 square feet of training area. The academy’s new $2.8 million, state-of-the-art physical training facility will cater to its alpine and Nordic student-athletes.

Ronnie Berlack was an accomplished BMA athlete who graduated from the academy in 2012. Tragically, he lost his life on January 5, 2015 during an avalanche in Soelden, Austria, where he was training with the U.S. Ski Team development squad.

The construction crew broke ground on May 16th and have completed the excavation for groundwater, stormwater, sewer, and water systems, completed installation of the base material for the Center, placed the concrete footing and frost walls, and are currently erecting the steel frame for the facility. The civil subcontractor is geared to complete all stormwater and utility installation including a buried 9,000 gallon non-potable water (NPW) precast concrete storage tank system by start of the 2016-17 school year in late August. Tata & Howard has been providing resident observation services for all civil installations as well as providing engineering services for any associated modifications and changes.

Tata & Howard’s Annual Company Outing!

On Saturday, June 11th, employee-owners traveled from all over New England to attend our annual employee outing at Kimball Farms in Westford, MA. Team members participated in a pie eating contest, mini golf, the driving range, and other fun outdoor activities. Our pie eating contest was certainly one of the highlights of the day. Contestants of all ages went head to head to see who could finish their pie the fastest without using their hands. Congratulations to Philip MacClellan, Tata & Howard Engineer, for taking home the trophy and being our pie eating contest champion.

We were delighted to have some of our younger Tata & Howard family with us as well to enjoy the ice cream bar and petting zoo. There were plenty of arts and crafts along with some awesome photo opportunities. Despite a bit of rain, it was a beautiful day to be outside with food, fun, friends, and family.

On Friday, June 17, 2016, New Britain Mayor Erin E. Stewart hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the construction of the new Elam Street water storage tank. In addition to Mayor Stewart, other attendees included Director of Utilities Gilbert Bligh, Raul Tejada from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, and Tata & Howard Vice President Steve Rupar, P.E. Tata & Howard provided design, bidding, construction administration, and resident observation services for this important New Britain Water Department Project. The new 2.0 million gallon, precast, prestressed, wire-wound, concrete water storage tank replaces an existing deteriorated 4 million gallon water storage tank constructed in 1956. The project also included construction of approximately 450 linear feet of new 16-inch diameter water main, mechanically cleaning and cement mortar lining approximately 430 linear feet of 20-inch diameter main, upgrades to the Corbin Avenue Pump Station and West Main Street Gatehouse, and demolition of much of the existing water storage tank.

The lower portion of the existing water storage tank was repurposed as a drainage and overflow retention basin for the new storage tank. Construction of the $3.3 million project was funded through the Drinking Water Revolving Fund, administered by the Department of Public Health.
