Tata & Howard Moves NH Office Tata & Howard, Inc. is pleased to announce that as of November 1, the firm's New Hampshire office has been relocated from Concord to Salem, New Hampshire. Continuing growth triggered the move to this convenient location at 53 Stiles Road, just off Interstate 93 and Pelham Road.

“We are very excited to announce the move of our New Hampshire office, as it reflects our expanding focus on our northern client base,” said Karen Gracey, P.E., Tata & Howard Co-President. "Our geographic reach keeps expanding and this move allows us to accommodate the growth and to provide enhanced talent through new hires.”

Co-President Jenna Rzasa, P.E., added, “Our growth is a direct result of exceptional client relationships and our solid reputation in the industry." Tata & Howard expects to add additional staff in the Salem offices over the next year.

Tata & Howard Celebrated Employee Ownership Month

Every October, The ESOP Association and its member companies celebrate Employee Ownership Month (EOM). Here at Tata & Howard, EOM is a time for employees to celebrate and thank each other, as the success of our ESOP is a result of everyone's dedication and hard work.

We take this opportunity to focus on building our culture of ownership and continue to educate our team on the benefits of employee-ownership. We also have fun!

Numerous activities were planned and conducted throughout the month of October as Tata & Howard employee-owners celebrated EOM. The month began with an ESOP Breakfast to kickoff the events. Later that first week, the teams in various offices held cornhole tournaments.

Game Night was held the following week, where staff in Marlborough and Waterbury gathered to play poker, Wii, and board games.

In the fall of 2019, Water for People (WFP) will be taking donors on an “Impact Tour” to Rwanda, Africa. This Tour is an opportunity for WFP to demonstrate its ongoing efforts in the countries and communities it supports.

Tata & Howard will send one lucky team member on the 2019 Impact Tour. The winner will be chosen through a raffle. T&H team members can earn raffle entries through: • Payroll Contribution to WFP (required) • Years of Service • ESOP Event Participation • Thanksgiving Food Drive • Holiday Giving Tree OR Toys for Tots • Baypath Humane Society Supply Drive • February ESOP Event The company will cover the cost of the trip and airfare and the winner will be required to take photos and blog during the trip for a presentation at an Owner's Meeting upon their return.

Pumpkins were decorated in mid-October and showed off our staff's creative talents. On October 19, staff gathered for an Anniversary Lunch to remember the founding of the firm 26 years ago in 1992.

The month wrapped up with the Pie in the Eye (PIE) event and the Halloween Costume Contest. For the PIE event, employees could donate and vote on who best deserved a PIE.

Anyone who isn't keen on going to Africa is still encouraged to participate in all activities and earn raffle tickets. There will be a second raffle that will take place at the same time. The winner of the second raffle will win a $500 gift card to the airline of their choosing.

T&H Kicks Off Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Training Emergency Response Plans (ERP) are mandatory for all public water suppliers, and utility companies are required to provide a minimum of 10 hours of Emergency Response Training. ERP training is a process that helps water system managers and staff explore vulnerabilities, make improvements, and establish procedures to follow during an emergency. Preparing and practicing a response plan can save lives, prevent illness, enhance system security, minimize property damage, and lessen liability.

Given the leading role in water, wastewater, and stormwater innovation that Tata & Howard plays, it made sense for the firm to tackle the need for ERP training. We welcomed Client Service Specialist, Mike Knox this past summer, and he has already begun the training sessions in Massachusetts.

Howard, P.E., Senior Vice President stated. “Having worked with Mike in the past, we knew of his experience and expertise improving the safety and security of municipal assets and implementing emergency response programs.”

Employee News Robert P. Sims, P.E., MCPPO, recently joined Tata & Howard. Robert has been managing design and construction projects for private and municipal clients for over 25 years.

He has applied knowledge in the study, design and management of water and sewer infrastructure design and construction administration. Robert received a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and has served as an officer in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The Marlborough office Water Team welcomed Eyleen Izaguirre in September. Eyleen graduated from the University of Florida's Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering in Gainesville, with her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering.

Falmouth Holds Dedication Ceremony for New Long Pond Water Filtration Facility On October 16, 2018, the Falmouth Board of Selectmen held a public Dedication Ceremony for the recently completed 8.4-million gallon per day (mgd) water filtration plant on Gifford Street. Several company representatives attended the event, including Project Technical Reviewer, Paul Howard, P.E.; Project Principal, Patrick O’Neale, P.E.; Project Manager, Ryan Neyland, P.E.; Project Engineer, Phil MacClellan, P.E.; and Co-President, Karen Gracey, P.E.. Tata & Howard was the lead engineering firm for the design and construction administration of the new facility. In addition to the dedication ceremony, tours were available to the public.

Attendees included Ryan Neyland, Karen Gracey, Paul Howard, and Phil MacClellan.

The new Long Pond Water Filtration Facility is a state-of-the-art water purification facility that received widespread community support. Due to the advanced nature of the facility design processes, this facility became the first Class IV fully automated facility to be permitted in New England.

Tata & Howard was awarded a 2018 Engineering Excellence Silver Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) for “outstanding professional design excellence” for the Falmouth Long Pond Water Filtration Facility.

The award-winning facility was built for the future and will provide a valuable health benefit to the residents of Falmouth for generations to come.

Congratulations to Jim Courchaine, WEF Fellow Recipient! Jim serves as Tata & Howard's Vice President and National Director of Business Practices. He was recognized as a 2018 Water Environment Federation (WEF) Fellow for his distinguished accomplishments and professional achievements in the global water environment.

Co-Presidents Jenna Rzasa and Karen Gracey joined Jim for the Award ceremony during WEFTEC 2018 in New Orleans.

Jim was nominated for this award by colleagues around the country and was chosen for his professional achievements by a selection committee with final approval by the WEF Board of Trustees.

Future Engineer Evan Michael Carroll was born to T&H engineer, Justine Carroll and her husband Mike in midSeptember 2018.

Water Treatment Facility Improvements for Canaan Fire Dept. #1, Canaan, Vermont Tata & Howard was contracted with providing engineering design and construction administration services for a water treatment facility for the Canaan Fire District #1. Canaan is the most northern/eastern town in Vermont and had two sources of supply for its water: a large spring system located in Canada, and a high-yielding well source within town limits.

The town’s issues were inadequate spring source construction and ability to maintain; low system pressures across the state line (Canaan provides water service to West Stewartstown, NH); inadequate flushing capabilities; inadequate distribution piping; high iron and manganese levels in the well source; and an inadequate storage tank.

After Tata & Howard completed a feasibility study, proposed solutions included: • Elimination of the spring sources due to Canadian border issues and high cost for upgrading the springs and connection piping.

• Installation of filtration system to meet the standards for iron and manganese.

• Construction of new, larger water storage tank at a higher elevation.

• Grant application assistance to help Canaan secure a 60% grant for the $4.6 million project from the USDA Rural Development Water & Waste Disposal Loan & Grant Program.

• Improvements to distribution piping consisting of the replacement of 12,000 feet of water mains and an 1,800-foot, 12-inch-diameter transmission main to the system.

In October, the project’s iron and manganese filtration system was delivered from the PureFlow Filtration Division, in Whittier, California. A portion of the facility roof was removed and the filter set in place. The system will remove iron, manganese, and arsenic.

Kudos to Contractor Daniel Hebert Inc. of Colebrook, New Hampshire for excellent safety and pre-planning to get the job done in advance of snow flurries! The water treatment facility was online by year-end 2018.

Sudbury's Meadow Walk Mixed-Use Site Completed Tata & Howard provided engineering services for final design and construction documents associated with the design of a wastewater treatment facility utilizing membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology for the 50-acre Meadow Walk development at 526-528 Boston Post Road in Sudbury, Massachusetts. T&H was contracted initially to prepare studies of existing conditions and proposed modifications to enhance and then upgrade the wastewater facility and disposal area on the site.

Additional work included value-engineered alternatives and additional design services.

The existing wastewater treatment facility was over 25 years old and required increased discharge limits; conversion to an MBR system to achieve higher removal of BOD, TSS, TN, turbidity, and other wastewater constituents; additional treatment redundancy; upgrades to meet current Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) guidelines; increased groundwater recharge; odor control; replacement of old infrastructure with a new pump station, gravity lines, and force main; a change to mixed land/water use to result in wastewater generation that could be more efficiently treated at the new wastewater treatment facility; and a new leaching field.

Fire and Water Infrastructure Upgrades for East Burke, Vermont Result from Initial Water Studies In 2013, Tata & Howard was initially contracted to evaluate the deficiencies in the Burke Fire District #1’s water system; deficiencies were cited by the Vermont Drinking Water Program. A new water supply was needed after it was determined the spring could not support the system any longer. After investigations and several attempts to locate an additional new source, the District resorted to a new well supply in the Village area near the Passumpsic River in a known aquifer.

In March of 2016, users of the water system had approved a bond of up to $2.62 million to make significant improvements to the water system; total project cost was $3.3 million. Three-quarters of the cost of the upgrade to the water system (75%) was paid for through a grant from the U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) Rural Development program.

As the project moves into its final stages in late 2018, the system should come into compliance with the State of Vermont’s requirements, addressing the water quality issues, leaks, as well as pressure problems and insufficient supply. A total of 12,500 feet of water main was installed for the new water system. In addition to water supply, the East Burke Water System now has fire protection. Tata & Howard provided the feasibility assessment, design and engineering, and construction administration and resident project representative services.

Initial Chamberlain Highway Water Main Completed in Meriden, CT A new 16-inch ductile iron water main designed by Tata & Howard was recently installed in Chamberlain Highway, a state highway (Route 71) in Meriden, Connecticut. The 536-ft-long main was constructed in preparation for work on a replacement bridge on West Main Street, which will impact three existing critical transmission mains installed on or in close proximity to the existing bridge. Tata & Howard also designed new replacement mains for the bridge project, which is currently under construction. The new Chamberlain Highway water main was installed as part of a staged plan to allow the City to maintain service to customers while the new bridge is being constructed.

Construction work on the new main began in March 2018. The new main connects to existing 16-inch cast iron mains at each end. The planned connection in the intersection with West Main Street was complicated by the need to control traffic, the presence of telephone duct banks directly above the existing main, and crossing underneath a parallel 24inch water main within a few feet of the 16-inch pipe. All of this work occurred at depths over ten feet. Tata & Howard worked closely with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT), the City of Meriden, and the contractor, VMS Construction, to carefully plan for this critical work. Several test pits were completed in advance of the planned connection. Line stops were installed near the work to limit the number of customers impacted by the work.

The project was fully completed in late September 2018, with the completion of permanent pavement and pavement markings. Work to replace the state-owned West Main Street Bridge, including the replacement of two mains and construction of a new utility bridge crossing Sodom Brook, began in the summer of 2018.
