TASIS England Middle School PE Handbook 2022-2023

Welcome to Physical Education,

TheaimofPEistoprovideallstudentswithanopportunitytolearnwithinabalancedprogramin whichtheyareencouragedtofurtherdeveloptheirapplicationandunderstandingofmovement skills, sportsmanship, collaboration/teamwork, and sports leadership.

Studentswillcoversixmainunitsthroughouttheyear.Withineachunitwewilllookatintegrating health topics through the concepts of:

● Run Jump Throw

● Net games

● Invasion Games

● Personal Fitness

● Striking and Fielding

● Movement Concepts (Parkour/Dance).

Furtherdetailsofunitscanbefoundonyourchild’sPELMSpagewhichisaccessedthroughthe Parent portal.

Studentswillbegiventheopportunitythroughoutthevariousunitstonurturetheircuriosityand discoverandlearnaboutthekeyconceptsthataimtobuilduponpreviousknowledgeandskills. EachoftheseskillsaretransferableintootherPEunitsandalsoclassroom-basedsubjects.They alsohelpeachstudenttostrengthennotonlytheirownindividualexperiences,buttoencourage studentstoidentifythepositiveconnectionsthatarisefromsharedand/orgroupexperiences.An example of this is how communication can affect individual and team success.

Studentswillbeemboldenedtoundertakeavarietyoflearning/teachingroleswithinlessons, providingopportunitiestogainfurtherknowledgeand/ortodevelopskillsinareassuchaspeer coaching,refereeing,lessonreviewandreflection.Theseadditionallearningexperiencesallow studentstoplaytheirpartwithinapositivelearningenvironment.Thiswillprovideeachstudentwith theopportunitytodevelopasaprincipled,openminded,andcompassionatememberofour community.Studentsaregiventhebestpossiblechanceto flourishwithinPEwhentheyare encouragedtotakerisks,learnfrommistakes,andultimatelydevelopalifelongpassionforphysical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Where will the lessons be?

PElessonswilleitherbeintheLargeGym,onGymField2,ortheFitnessCentre.It’sadvisedthat studentsbringsuitableclothingandfootweartoalllessonsincaseofinclementweatherresultingin a location change on the day of the lesson.

What to wear?

On PE days, students should wear their PE uniform to school.

Middle School PE Uniforms:

Allstudentsarerequiredtowearschool-designatedclothingforPEclasses.Theseareavailable from The Student Centre.

Indoorwear:Houseshirt,PEshortsorleggings,PEtracksuitbottoms,socks,andathleticfootwear withnon-markingsoles,schooljumperorthenavyTASISPE¼zipovertheirHouset-shirt.No hooded items are acceptable for PE due to health and safety reasons.

Outdoorwear:Asabovebutwiththeadditionofapairof astroshoes or mouldedcleats forusein wetweather.ThePEuniformmustbepurchasedfromtheschoolsupplier.Ajacket/coatwithouta hood is advised in colder weather along with extra layers to maintain warmth and comfort.

Assessments Studentsareassessedonfourcriteria.Eachcriteriaisworth25%ofeachunit/quartergrade.The criteria are: 1.Physical performance 2.Knowledge and understanding 3.Health and wellbeing 4.Sports leadership Please click on the grade level to view the assessment rubric: Grade 5 and 6 Grade 7 and 8

Grading and reporting:

Unlikeothersubjects,PEdoesnothavelettergradesorpercentages.OntheLMSgradebook, parentsandstudentsseenumbersthatlinktothecriterialistedabove.Thissystemindicatesifa studentisfailingtoengage(1),progressing(PG),achieving(AH)orexceeding(ED)foreachofthe4 criteria. Studentreflectionsareusedasapartofthereportstohighlighttheirlearningand understandingoftheircontinueddevelopment.Eachreportingperiod,studentsandparentswillsee theirindividualcriteriagradebasedona1-4scaleonLMSgradebookplusanoverallgradewithED, AH or PG on their end report.

How do the numbers work?  4: Exceeding(ED) 3: Achieving  (AH) 2: Progressing (PG)  1: Failure to engage ( * )

Effort marks:

Eachquarter,eachstudentreceiveseffortmarksalongsidetheirPEcriteriagrades.Theseeffort marks are: 1- Outstanding 2- Good 3- Satisfactory 4- Poor 5- Unsatisfactory

Homework:

Onoccasions,studentsingrade7and8willreceivesomepre/postlessonreadingtoassistintheir learningofkeyconceptsandunderstandingofcontentdirectlylinkedtotheunitbeingcovered.This will be set on Google Classroom.

Health and safety:

Jewellery: All jewellery and watches, including fitness trackers must be removed for all lessons.

Piercings

:

AllearringsandotherpiercingsmustberemovedbeforePE.Tapingisnotallowedforhealthand safety reasons. It is advised that all new piercings are done over school breaks to allow them to heal. ShouldyouhaveanyquestionsregardingthisornewpiercingsthenpleasecontactMrMatJones directly (mjones@tasisengland.org).

Footwear:

Aswithanyactivity,footwearandclothingmustbeconsideredandbedeemedappropriate.ALL participantsmustwearitemsofclothingandfootwearwhichare fitforpurpose.Clean,nonmarking trainersforindoorsandastrosormouldedcleatsforoutside.Slipontrainersorfashiontrainerssuch as Converse are not acceptable due to the lack of support.

Hair:

Longhairmustalwaysbetiedbackwithasuitablysoftitemtoprevententanglementinapparatus and to prevent vision being obscured.

Nails:

Nails must be sufficiently short to prevent injury to self and others.

Non participation/injured students:

Studentsareexpectedtotakepartinalllessons.Ifastudentisinjuredorunabletotakepart physically,theymusthaveanotefromaparent/guardianand/orfromtheTASISHealthCenter.Ifthis isthecase,studentswillbegivenalternativeroleswithinthelessonsforthedurationoftheir recoverysotheyarestillengagedandinvolvedwiththeclass.NonparticipationinPEwillalsoresult innon-participationinsportsteamsand/orco-curricularactivitiesonthedaysstudentsmissPE lessons.

First aid/concussion:

Ifastudentgetsinjuredwhileinclass,theywillbesent/escortedtotheHealthCentretoget checkedout.Incaseofaface/headinjury,theywillberemovedfromtheactivityimmediatelyand escortedtotheHealthCentre.Studentsthatsustainaconcussionwillhavetocompletethe Gradual Return to Play Protocol.

Asynchronous and Synchronous Learners:

StudentsapprovedforHybridLearningforemergencysituationswillstillbeabletocompletePE lessonsonline.SDLstudentsarerequiredtojoinaZoomcalltochecktheworksetwiththeir teacher.Theselessonsareinlinewiththeclassbasedlessonsostudentswillbeabletolearnthe keyconceptsandcontentbeingcoveredinclasswhilststillhavingaphysicalsectionofthelesson tocompleteathome(iftheycan).TheworkandrelatedactivitieswillbeaccessibleviaGOOGLE CLASSROOM.
