Rainbow sherbet has become a new family favorite in our household. It’s a cool, refreshing treat that’s perfect for the hot summer months!
ZUCCHINI BREAD
It is Farmers’ Market season, and I am excited to try baking with the vegetables I get there this yearincluding zucchini bread. This will make for another delicious addition to how we use the produce we purchase at the Henderson Farmers’ Market this year. And the best part - my kids get to help bake it alongside me. I love making summer memories.
IMPATIENS FLOWER
I have always struggled with keeping flowers alive, but I have found that impatiens are easy for me to keep my front porch bright and colorful. They stay beautiful all summer long. I always mix a variety of colors with pink, white, coral and purple to name a few.

LOCAL REAL ESTATE AGENT DONATES PORTION OF COMMISSIONS TO LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTERS
Tracey McElya, a local realtor with Keller Williams Elite Realty, is giving back this year as she is taking a portion of her commissions each time she closes on a home to local animal shelters. McElya said she sees this as a meaningful way to connect two homes: the one her client moved into, and the one she can help an animal find.
“I was inspired to start this because so many animals are in need of love, care, and a place to call home. My background is in Veterinary Technology and I have trained service dogs for the last 10 years. There is an incredible feeling of satisfaction when I can help someone or an animal find their perfect home. With each transaction, I donate to a shelter located in the same community where the home was purchased. The donation varies—it might be pet food, essential supplies, or covering the adoption fee for a specific animal. I typically choose animals who have been at the shelter the longest or are in the greatest need of adoption.”
One of McElya’s first donations went to New Hope Animal Rescue Center in Henderson. where she sponsored the adoption of a cat named “Kitten” who was so scared in the shelter environment that he would hide in his litter box. She also donated over 500 pounds of dog food to help support the animals still waiting for homes.
McElya stated, “Keller Williams Elite Realty is big on giving back to the community.” Their annual RED Day – held on the second Thursday of May – is a way for agents and associates to step away from business to “Renew, Energize, and Donate” in their communities. McElya continued, “Instead of choosing one day I chose to be able to give back with each transaction I have all year!”
If you are looking for a home and want to help a furry friend in need, you can reach Tracey McElya at tmcelya@ kw.com. McElya said, “I’m grateful for the chance to raise awareness and hopefully inspire others to give back in ways that align with their own passions.”
DAYS GARDEN CENTER CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING WITH NEW OWNERS
Andy and Laura Rideout celebrated their grand opening on Saturday, April 26 taking over as the new owners of Days Garden Center on S. Alvasia Street. Days was originally started by George Day over 50 years ago. It was a grocery store before a garden center. Days has been a staple in Henderson, KY offering quality bedding plants, shrubs, trees, plant care products and even landscape maintenance and installation.
Andy spent 20 years building/managing golf courses and 15 years as the Horticulture Extension Agent for the University of Kentucky. The Rideouts hope to continue with much of the same products and services that have proved to be in demand. They will offer all types of plant material including shrubs, trees, bedding and vegetable plants, house plants and even a few tropicals. They also offer a full line of plant care products, mulch, and lawn care products.
Attached to the main shop, they have a gift shop that will highlight unique ‘garden related’ gifts and will double later this year with Christmas gifts.
By this summer, they will offer some specialty services such as lawn overseeding and commercial maintenance contracts.
Andy said, “We really concentrate on quality plants, quality service, and quality advice on the care of your plants.”

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF (FAMILY, PETS, ETC)
My name is Jordan Cessna, and I have been married to my wife, Callie, for 7 years. We have a precious 2-year-old daughter, Elle, and a chocolate labradoodle named Bulleit. Our family faithfully attends Zion Baptist Church and enjoys being active within our community.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THAT POSITION?
I am the owner of Belle Homes LLC – a residential construction company that specializes in new construction and large-scale remodels for homes in our community and surrounding communities. My wife and I started Belle Homes LLC in July of 2023. However, I have been in commercial and residential construction for 10 plus years. Fun fact –Belle Homes LLC was named after our daughter Elle, who we lovingly call “Elle Belle”.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS DREAMED OF BEING A CONTRACTOR AND OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE READY TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR?
Building homes and owning my own business has always been a dream of mine. The family home is incredibly important, and I am honored that I build homes for families in our community. Callie and I knew we were ready to take the leap and start Belle Homes LLC after a lot of prayer and much support from our family, friends, and community.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES?
The personal aspect of home building is definitely what I enjoy the most. The home is where the family prospers and memories are made, it’s such a blessing to be apart of that for so many families in our community. With all things comes challenges though, different days present different things – the hardest one is probably weather (because you truly can’t control it!).
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?
Like many people can attest to, it is not always easy balancing work and family – but it is always worth it. Providing for my wife and daughter, is one of the most important things I can do as a husband and father. I am grateful I am able to provide for our family, while also doing something that I love, building homes.
WHEN YOU AREN'T WORKING ON HOMES, WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ENJOY?
I really enjoy the outdoors: golfing, hunting, fishing, you name it! Golf has started to rise to the number one spot though, Callie and Elle both have clubs now too…it is just a great way for us all to get outside together and enjoy some leisurely family time.
BELLE HOMES LLC HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTNER WITH MARSHA'S PLACE PREGNANCY CENTER. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR INVOLVEMENT WITH THIS ORGANIZATION AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOUR FAMILY TO SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND BUSINESSES SUCH AS THIS ONE.
Marsha’s Place is near and dear to mine and Callie’s heart. Callie was previously a board member at Marsha’s Place and rolled off at the end of 2023, to help our family focus on the start-up of Belle Homes LLC. During the Night for Life (Marsha’s Place annual fundraiser in the spring) in 2024, the One-by-One project was rolled out. I looked at Callie and told her “this is how we can stay involved, this is how we can help”. I reached out to Jared, the Executive Director at Marsha’s Place, and told him I wanted to volunteer in whatever capacity they would have me. Since then, I have happily been the volunteer general contractor for the One-by-One project with Marsha’s Place.
IF YOU COULD GIVE ADVICE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CONTRACTOR, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
My best piece of advice, learn the trade from someone respected in the industry and stay honest. HF

WHIMSICAL SUMMER FUN
DIY Mushroom Terracotta Pots
There’s something truly magical about mushrooms — no, not the kind you sauté for dinner, but the whimsical, fairy-garden type that spark the imagination! This summer, bring a bit of that enchantment to your backyard, porch, or playroom with an easy, affordable, and absolutely adorable craft: Mushroom Terracotta Pots! With just a few materials and a splash of paint, kids can transform basic garden pots into a magical mushroom wonderland. Whether you’re filling them with flowers, succulents, or just letting them be the centerpiece of your outdoor play space, this project is sure to delight kids and parents alike.
SUPPLY LIST:
›› Terracotta pots (medium or large work great for the stem)
›› Terracotta saucers (one to match each pot, for the mushroom cap)
›› Acrylic paint (white for polka dots, red is classic for the cap, but feel free to get creative!)
›› Paintbrushes or sponges
›› Sealant spray (optional, for outdoor use)
›› Hot glue gun or strong craft adhesive (optional if attaching cap to base)
›› Newspaper or drop cloth for easy cleanup
INSTRUCTIONS:
›› Prep Your Area
Lay down newspaper or a drop cloth to protect surfaces. This is a fun (and messy!) project, so wear play clothes and get ready to let creativity shine.
›› Paint the Mushroom Stem (Pot)
Flip the terracotta pot upside down so the wide rim is at the bottom — this will be the mushroom’s base. Paint the entire surface white or light beige to mimic a mushroom stem. Let dry.
›› Paint the Mushroom Cap (Saucer)
Now, flip the matching saucer upside down and paint it red, pink, blue — whatever your child’s fairy-tale heart desires! Once dry, use a smaller brush or sponge to dab on white polka dots across the surface for that classic toadstool look.
›› Add a Sealant (Optional)
If your mushrooms will live outdoors, a clear acrylic spray sealant helps protect your paint job from the elements. Let dry completely before moving.
Assemble Your Mushroom
Place the painted saucer on top of the painted pot to create your mushroom shape. You can leave it unattached for easy transport or secure it with hot glue if you’d prefer it fixed.
›› Display with Pride!
Add your mushrooms to a garden bed, place them along a walkway, or let them create the perfect setting for backyard fairy adventures. Some families even use them as planters by flipping the pot right-side up and planting directly inside!
›› Bonus Idea:
Make a whole mushroom village using different sizes of pots and saucers. Let kids name each mushroom, add little doors or windows with markers or stickers, and turn the backyard into a storybook come to life.
This mushroom terracotta craft is more than just a colorful project — it’s a way to slow down, share laughs, and create summer memories that sprout joy long after the paint dries. HF

RECIPE
SOUR GRAPE “CANDY”
Looking for a fun, easy treat that feels like candy but comes from the fruit bowl? These Sour Grapes are a sweet-and-sour snack that kids and grown-ups will love. Made with just grapes, a splash of citrus, and a dusting of flavored gelatin powder, they’re a simple alternative to store-bought sour candies— without all the extra sugar!
You can serve them chilled for a juicy burst or frozen for a more popsicle-like crunch (which also makes them great for teething relief or summer snack trays). And if your kiddos are on the younger side, you can absolutely chop the grapes into small pieces before coating and freezing!
INGREDIENTS:
›› 3 cups green grapes
›› 2 tablespoons lime juice
›› 2 tablespoons lemon juice
›› Your choice of different powdered gelatin flavors
INSTRUCTIONS:
›› In a small bowl, mix together lemon and lime juice.
›› Pour your powdered gelatin flavors into different small bowls.
›› Stick toothpicks into grapes at the top where stems were attached. Dunk each grape into the citrus juice mixture then roll into a different gelatin powder for each grape. You can also use your hands or spoon the jello mixture onto the grapes if you prefer, I just found the toothpick method to give the most evenlycoated grapes. You can also chop the grapes before dipping if you are making these for a young child.
›› Lay the grapes in a flat layer and chill them in the fridge or freeze them 1-2 hours before serving. Enjoy! HF

Henderson Farmers’ Market THE BENEFITS OF LOCAL PRODUCE
The Henderson Farmers’ Market has been a community staple for many years, although it has really taken off since it moved to the Henderson County Fairgrounds in 2013. At the market, you can expect to find the freshest produce, high quality meats, professionally made artisan goods, delicious honey, beautiful handmade crafts, and more that are all produced locally. The market is home to vendor booths from all across Henderson and surrounding counties, and guarantees a wide variety of goods that can help with any family’s weekly grocery plans.
a place where growers can answer consumers’ questions directly.”
Tim Alexander, president of the Henderson Farmers’ Market and proprietor of Cardinal Farms Peaches, had much to say about the benefits of the market for our community. “The Farmers’ Market gives local residents access to locally produced food and products and the opportunity to meet the growers and producers face to face. The vast majority of agricultural products produced in our region are harvested and shipped all over the world. The products at the Farmers’ Market are grown locally and consumed locally. When issues and concerns arise, the Farmers’ Market can be
Former president of the Market, Amy Cates of Cates Farm, provided a rich history of the Farmers’ Market. “In the 90s, it started in Central Park and then moved to Second and Main. The Henderson County Chamber of Commerce promoted it and we became an actual organization full of local growers. The Cates Porter Pavillion at the Fairgrounds was dedicated in 2013 and that’s where we are now. It was named after my mom, Sharon Cates, and Jeff Porter, who was the local University of Kentucky Horticulture Agent for Henderson. Both have passed and it was special to dedicate the Pavillion to them because they did so much for the community.” When asked of the benefits of having a Farmers’ Market in the community, Amy stated: “There are a lot of benefits to it. It’s great to be able to buy healthier, fresher foods from local farmers and producers. You can form actual relationships with the people you buy from.”
Tim continued, “The Henderson Farmers’ Market has also worked hard in the past few years to meet criteria to participate in programs that benefit food-insecure members of our community. Being able to accept SNAP benefits, WIC and senior vouchers is not a simple proposition. It requires funding and a lot of work to administer these programs. Additionally, the Kentucky Double Dollars grants we’ve received allow us to double the value of the assistance dollars these customers receive. This program is a cost share, meaning we have to raise matching funds within our community. These programs are why our community
sponsors are so important to us.”
Other vendors and those who make the market happen spoke further on the benefits of the Farmers’ Market. “We cannot stress enough the significant differences in nutritional quality and density that local food has as compared to big box retailers,” said Josh Johnston of Windy Hill Farm + Home. “A notable degree of nutritional integrity is lost when food spends days on refrigerated box trucks. Real human health impacts arise from where you source your food. Also, nearly every dollar you spend at the Farmers’ Market stays in our local economy. When you purchase food from Walmart, most of those dollars leave Henderson and go to Bentonville, Arkansas, and then to shareholders across the world. When you purchase food from a local farmer, almost every dollar stays in Henderson to help grow our community.”
Brandy Boucherie of Boucherie Winery spoke highly of the Farmers’ Market. “The biggest benefit is people being able to obtain locally grown food and hand-crafted products. There are so many health benefits, economic benefits, and so
much more to the Farmers’ Market. The more people that shop local, the more variety the farmers are able to offer, as well.” EMCO Epic Growers is also a staple booth at the Farmers’ Market where you can find Brandy’s kids, niece, and nephew, Claira, Violet, Emma, and Christian, running the show. Their pumpkins and sweet corn are rumored to be top quality, so make sure to check them out if you stop by.
Thank you to all who spoke so generously about the Farmers’ Market and to all who make it happen. For anyone interested in checking it out for themselves, come by the Cates Porter Pavillion at the
Henderson County Fairgrounds on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, rain or shine from 8AM to noon to get quality produce and goods from local providers and growers. The market is only open from the beginning of May to the end of October, so make sure you go before it closes for the season. Anyone who is interested in becoming a vendor can email hendersonkyfarmersmarket@gmail. com to receive an application for their specific type of business. Messages can also be sent to the Henderson Farmers’ Market Facebook page. The Farmers’ Market is especially looking for local growers to continue improving their produce selection. Shop local, Henderson! Check out the Farmers’ Market this season! HF

Community Supported Agriculture
Local Boxes of Produce Made to Order
Farming is no stranger to our local community, and agriculture has been a key staple to what makes Henderson so special.
Local farmers Josh and Brittany Johnston, owners of Windy Hill Farm + Home, have both been in and around agriculture their entire lives. Brittany’s dad was a seed geneticist while also growing crops and tobacco and raising cattle. Her mother also grew up in agriculture where her family owned several commercial greenhouses that grew tomatoes and cucumbers. Josh’s family farmed in Union County. Both went to college at Murray State University for Agriculture and found jobs with Nutrien Ag Solutions where Josh was a crop consultant in Morganfield and Brittany was a division administrative manager in Owensboro. She happened to be auditing Josh’s office when they met.
After they were married, the Johnston’s started their own garden. However, it wasn’t until their daughter, Maggie, was born that Brittany stepped away from her full-time job and began going to the Henderson Farmers’ Market to sell their fresh produce.
A NEW SEASON
Windy Hill Farm + Home took a turn in 2023 when they were blessed
with gaining larger accounts. At the end of 2023, Josh left Nutrien Ag Solutions and 2024 was their first year farming full-time.
They offered zucchini and cucumber the first year, and Brittany started baking bread. The demand for her bread took off. “I just wanted to diversify our options, so I just started out with zucchini bread and things that I was making from the garden and people started buying it. I went from 2 offerings to 12 every week and then it just grew from there,” Brittany said.
Josh added, “Anything from the garden she can make. She can make onion jam that’s a marinade and that just shows her range.” Brittany baked for a wedding in October and has also been asked to do corporate events and showers.
BRINGING BACK THE CSA PROGRAM
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a program providing another option of getting local produce to those within the community through precrafted or customizable boxes (small or large) to be picked up or delivered each week for 10 weeks. This program is common around the country. Henderson offered a couple CSA programs about ten years ago, so it was
something Josh and Brittany felt led to try and bring back to the community.
Brittany stated, “It was initially my idea because we had heard of it and talked about it, but we really were trying to find a different outlet for summer. We go to the Farmers’ Market but that's normally our only way to sell retail produce. It's unbelievable how few people in Henderson know about the Farmers’ Market and actually go even if they do. I don’t know if it’s the time of day, but we were just trying to figure out how to expand it out into the community and get fresh produce to everybody that wanted it. We decided to try the CSA and see how it worked. It’s really our way of getting nutritious produce to local people.”
A program such as the CSA doesn’t come without its challenges. To run a program like this means farmers have to provide different crops to satisfy people every week. Josh noted, “It’s hard. If we are promising a fresh mix of produce every week, we have to raise a lot of different crops.”
The program is offered to residents in Henderson County, or anyone who wants to come to Henderson to pick it up. Additionally, the option to have boxes delivered is only offered to those living in Henderson. Individuals who sign up can pick up their boxes at the
Henderson Farmers’ Market during business hours, Days Garden Center on Mondays between 1:00-5:00pm or select the option to have their boxes delivered. If someone has two or more boxes delivered to the same location then the delivery fee is waived.
THE BENEFITS OF SIGNING UP
When individuals sign up, they are given options of a small or large box and locals can pick between purchasing a pre-crafted box that Brittany picks out and sends recipes with, or they can choose from a list and select the produce they want. There will be at least two recipes provided per week with each customer receiving the same recipe in their pre-crafted box. “I am going to offer a baked good every week in the CSA box,” Brittany added. There is a $5 charge for the customizable option because it's a little more time consuming for Josh and Brittany to put together. They give a 5% discount for those who pay ahead, or individuals may pay monthly. Boxes range from $25 to $45.
The program will be offered for 10 weeks beginning May 19th. Windy Hill Farm + Home does a lot of business with schools, so they are wrapping up the
program before fall when business with other accounts increases.
The offerings will vary as each
month begins. In the beginning, customers will find colorful crops from the cool season such as turnips, carrots, lettuces, onions and potatoes. As July approaches, the boxes will offer tomatoes, peppers (six different offerings), sweet corn, watermelon and cantaloupe.
Brittany raised fresh herbs this year as well, so if a recipe calls for an herb they will provide that within the box. Some of the herbs include cilantro, parsley and oregano.
Buying fresh, local produce provides so many benefits. Josh stated, “There is tons of research proving how local food raised the way we raise it in your community, how much healthier it is, how much more nutrient dense it is than what you are going to get off the shelf at Walmart, and we believe and have done a lot of research in that regard. We want to help introduce people to local food and help introduce people to the idea that a smaller, kind of funny looking carrot has significantly higher nutrient density and higher density of secondary metabolites than what a pretty orange carrot from
“ ” Kids do not hate vegetables. Kids hate bad vegetables.
the Walmart shelf has in it. We want to incorporate that into our local community. Just because it’s a vegetable doesn’t mean it’s healthy.”
The Johnstons have picked up a lot of business in and around our community because businesses found that the produce they would receive on the box truck was not lasting as long. The shelf stability of local produce compared to something at the grocery store is much different. “A healthy full-packed fruit or vegetable always lasts longer in a cooler or fridge,” Josh said. Businesses might pay a little more for what farms like Windy Hill Farm + Home provide,
WRITTEN
but they are able to use it for a longer period of time.
We are very passionate about specialty agriculture. “That’s our whole goal is we want to get our produce into our community. So much of what we do goes to different business accounts that might leave the county, and we want it here,” Josh explained.
You can find Windy Hill Farm + Home at the Henderson Farmers’ Market on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00am - 12:00pm from May through October. They will also be set up at the Summer Sunset Series on Thursday nights this summer in downtown Henderson. HF

How Creating High-End Spaces for Out-of-Town Guests Helps Drive Tourism in Henderson
LUXURY MEETS LOCAL
Nestled among the historic buildings of downtown Henderson, Kentucky, Curt and Emily Hamilton are quietly transforming their hometown into a destination for travelers from across the country. With three unique Airbnb properties—the Nest, the Lifeboat, and the Brokerage—the Hamiltons are not only offering luxury stays but also helping to fuel the local economy and breathe new life into the city’s downtown corridor by creating an inviting, high-end home-
away-from-home that blends design, comfort, and local flavor.
What began as a simple investment in a historic building turned into a passion project. “We love to travel, we love decorating, and we love our hometown,” said Curt. “This was our way of combining all three.” Each unit is themed and thoughtfully furnished, with each property having its own theme and personality.
The Nest, a two-bedroom
It all started with a building at 223 Second Street, which Curt and Emily purchased and fully renovated. Rather than converting the upper floors into traditional long-term rentals, they decided to create boutique-style, short-term accommodations, a rare find in downtown Henderson. “There was nowhere else to stay downtown besides the L&N Bed and Breakfast,” Curt explained. “We love to travel, and we thought, why not create a space where visitors can really experience the flavor of Henderson?”

→Victorian-inspired space, is adorned with wrought iron beds, steampunk accents, and vintage touches like steamer trunks and a bicycle-turnedcoffee-table. It’s also filled with John James Audubon prints, many of which came from Holy Name School, paying homage to Henderson’s deep connection with the famed naturalist.
The Lifeboat, a one-bedroom studio, was named after an early tenant going through a life transition. Its nautical theme, complete with a striking seven-foot redheaded mermaid sculpture, gives business
travelers and solo guests a quirky, cozy escape.
Then there’s the Brokerage, a three-bedroom loft above Curt’s law office that nods to the building’s past as a brokerage firm. With turn-ofthe-century industrial décor, original wood countertops from 1884, and a display of historic elevator gears, it’s a blend of history and high-end comfort.
“We’re going after the luxury crowd,” Emily said. “But more than anything, we want people to feel at home and immersed in something
special.”
And people are taking notice. In just three years, the Hamiltons’ properties have hosted more than 150 stays with guests from across the U.S. from California to New York to Alaska. Many come for weddings, business trips, or simply to experience small-town charm with a big personality.

spaces, and personal touches like champagne for special occasions.
“These properties aren’t just for us—they’re for Henderson,” Curt said. “We believe in investing where we live, and we want our guests to fall in love with this town just like we have.”
The success of these Airbnbs has had a ripple effect on Henderson’s local economy. Guests are encouraged to dine at local
favorites like Hometown Roots, grab coffee from nearby cafés, and shop at boutiques like Cheekwood Studio, all within a few blocks’ walk from the rentals so guests can easily walk to anywhere they need to go.
“We make recommendations, and so do the restaurants and shops,” Emily said. “It’s a supportive network. If we’re full, we’ll call around to help visitors find another spot in town.”
The Hamiltons said they wanted to show off Henderson and all that it has to offer. “We’ve raised our kids here. We’ve built our lives here. This is where we wanted to invest,” Curt said. “And if we can help make Henderson a place people want to visit—or even move to—then we’ve done our job.”

Growing Curiosity
10 Tips to Get Kids Involved in Gardening
Gardening is a wonderful way to connect kids with nature, teach them responsibility, and spark curiosity about how things grow. Whether you have a backyard garden, flower pots on your front porch, or just a sunny windowsill, involving children in gardening can be both educational and fun. It encourages healthy eating habits, patience, and a sense of accomplishment. Here are 10 creative and practical tips to help get kids excited and engaged in the
gardening process.
GIVE THEM THEIR OWN SPACE
Allocate a small section of the garden or a few containers that are just for them. Responsibility for something makes it much more exciting when they obtain ownership of “their” garden.
CHOOSE FAST-GROWING OR FUN PLANTS
Pick plants that will grow quickly
and keep your child’s interest in watching and caring for their garden. Take them to local shops such as Days Garden Center or Benton's Garden Center to pick out the perfect plants. These might include sunflowers, cherry tomatoes, snap peas, or radishes.
USE KID-SIZED TOOLS
Purchase tools that fit their hands. You want this process to be easy for them and remain fun. It makes the gardening process more
manageable when they have tools made specifically for them.
LET THEM PICK WHAT TO GROW
Give them a say in choosing seeds or seedlings. Children will be more engaged if they feel they are involved with the decisions being made. They will value being a helper.
MAKE IT A SENSORY EXPERIENCE
Include plants with interesting textures (like lamb’s ear), colors, or smells (like mint or lavender) to stimulate curiosity. The more variety you have in the garden, the more interest they will have.
INCORPORATE ART PROJECTS
Let them use their creativity by decorating pots, making plant markers, or painting garden rocks. This adds color to your garden and
gives your child the opportunity to create keepsakes.
CREATE A ROUTINE
Involve them in daily or weekly tasks like watering, weeding, or checking for pests. Teaching them consistency helps develop responsibility.
CELEBRATE HARVESTS
Let them taste what they’ve grown by having them pick from recipes to incorporate the foods into. The excitement of eating food they’ve planted themselves can’t be beat!
MAKE IT PLAYFUL
Turn tasks into games such as a scavenger hunt for bugs or who can pick the most produce/flowers from the garden.
BE PATIENT AND PRAISE THEIR EFFORTS
The gardening process is a learning
process. If a mistake is made, we learn from it. Encourage your child’s efforts on their hard work and the task at hand. Praise them for their achievements. Don’t always focus on the results. Keep it positive and fun so it’s something they will want to continue being part of.
Getting kids involved in gardening doesn’t have to be complicated— it just takes a bit of creativity, encouragement, and the willingness to let them get a little messy. It’s all about learning and having fun while letting kids be kids. You’re not only growing plants but also encouraging curiosity about how things grow, responsibility of seeing it through, and a lifelong appreciation for the nature around us. So grab some seeds, dig in the dirt, and enjoy the experience together! HF
Fun & Fresh Decorating Ideas for Families
When the days get longer and the sun shines brighter, it’s the perfect time to refresh your home with a breezy, cheerful summer vibe. Best of all, you don’t have to spend a lot—or make major changes—to make your space feel sunny, playful, and ready for family fun.
Here are affordable and familyfriendly decorating ideas to bring summer into your home:
BRING THE OUTDOORS IN
• Nature-inspired centerpieces: Gather flowers, rocks, or driftwood from a family outing to use in mason jars or trays. The John James Audubon State Park would be the perfect place to find these treasures!
• Leafy touches: Add potted plants or colorful florals to your windowsill, countertops or entry tables – J’Petals offers custom arrangements! Kids can help with the arrangement and will enjoy taking care of them and watching them grow.
SWITCH UP DECOR
• Replace heavy winter throws and/or dark pillows with lighter fabrics like cotton or linen in bright colors, beachy stripes, or floral patterns. Local shops such as Sweet Pea’s Gift Shop, Beachbum Farms Designs & Company or Olive Leaf to name a few are
sure to have summer decor to brighten things up!
• DIY idea: Let kids decorate pillow covers using fabric paint or tie-dye. These would be perfect to sit on hall trees, ottomans or couches to add a personal touch of summer (and memories).
SUMMER GALLERY WALL
Create a rotating seasonal art wall featuring:
• Kids' summer drawings or nature collages - a walk down memory lane to see how their drawings change as they get older.
• Family vacation/summer photos.
• Free printables with summery quotes such as “Hello Sunshine” or “Life is Better in Flip-Flops.”
BRIGHTEN UP WITH COLOR
• Put out colorful garden flags in your landscaping and a fun, summer doormat.
• Paint flower pots in fun colors or purchase bright, colorful flowers to plant in your flower pots displaying them inside and/or outside your home.
OUTDOOR FUN ZONES
• Set up a backyard nook with a picnic blanket/table and a basket of books or games to enjoy the summer weather.
BEACH-INSPIRED BATHROOM REFRESH
• Swap out hand towels, shower curtains and bath mats to give a beachfront vibe.
FRONT DOOR FIRST IMPRESSIONS
• Hang string lights or solar lanterns around a firepit for cozy summer nights.
• Add a small jar of shells you’ve collected to sit on the vanity and include anchor/shellthemed decor.
• Head over to Whims & Wishes to find or create the perfect wooden door hanger for your front door.
• Add festive pillows to rocking chairs or front porch swings.
• Go a step further - paint your front door a bright color.
BONUS: GET THE KIDS INVOLVED
• Let the littles make paper sun catchers for the windows.
• Have them create their own door hangers.
• Pop the landscaping with painted rocks the kids paint themselves.
Summer decorating should be light, fun, and relaxed—just like the season itself. Swapping out a few items and adding a pop of color here and there will give your family a sun-kissed feel all summer long! HF SUMMER
FARMER & FRENCHMAN
Agritourism at Its Finest
Since their grand opening in 2016, F&F continues to develop new features throughout each growing season. From pollinator gardens - brightening up unexpected corners and increasing crop yields - to veggies and farm fresh eggs to an adventure in mycology in 2025, their love for fine dining, tourism and agriculture continues to grow and intertwine into one of Kentucky’s most beloved agritourism locations in the Commonwealth.
The core value of F&F is “slow food” inspired by the Italian movement of enjoying food mindfully and socially from seed, to fruit, to plate. One may savor each flavor of the terroir while taking in the scenes of the vineyard, field and garden.
The raised bed gardens compliment seasonal dishes and farm-to-fork
agritourism experiences at F&F. Additionally, their new mushroom growing facility - which includes a variety of baby mushrooms such as lions mane and oyster - provides year round access to the finest ingredients for dishes like mushroom risotto and stuffed mushrooms. Guests are invited to taste and celebrate the flavors of European-style dishes made fresh with Kentucky ingredients paired with uniquely blended wines from the beautiful, 10-year-old vineyard. The experience doesn’t stop there as cabin rentals are available to stay and enjoy the countryside even longer.
With a well-rounded agritourism experience comes a commitment to health and wellness. Farmers have been intrinsically tied to the health of their land and the communities that
they feed. Enjoying fresh and whole food ingredients from the local terroir contributes to healthful nutrition. F&F offers wellness sessions for visitors as well as consulting for vineyard management and gardening.
Farmer & Frenchman Winery offers a distinctive destination located in the heart of Henderson County. You’re invited to come Eat, Taste, Stay, and Celebrate by calling 270-748-1856. HF
