For my family, the answer has to be Chick-fil-A. It’s a staple meal for us each week. The highway 54 location was a game changer for us. Close second – Toad Hop. We love trying their new flavors!

OUR OWN BRIDGE DAY
Did you know I’m also the editor of the Owensboro Relocation Guide? It’s such a fun project that helps people moving here get to know our town. For the new cover, we got a little creative with a photoshoot featuring our classic red convertible — and since the bridge was closed, we made it our very own bridge day!
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
The first day of school was a big one for my crew. Avery started her freshman year, Reed kicked off 5th grade, and Mason had his very first day of kindergarten!
A HOME RUN SEASON
Mason started his Lil’ Sluggers season playing in the dirt, and ended it hitting the ball and making an out at first — what a season of growth!
PERFECT PLACE TO PLAY
Mason loves Little Explorers Play Café — and so do we! It’s the perfect spot where he can play and use his imagination in the many discovery areas, while we get some work done and enjoy a great cup of coffee.
SWEET TREAT
Our family can’t get enough of Toad Hop — it’s one of our favorite spots, and we find ourselves going back often just to see what new flavors are on the menu. My personal fave? Oreo Cold Brew… it’s a must-try!
From the Editor
When Drew and I married, the kids and I packed up and moved into his home in Philpot — a 1950s fixer-upper with good bones and endless potential. Over the years, we’ve poured love and sweat into renovating every room, making it truly ours. Surrounded by open farmland, our home feels like a retreat, especially in a corn year when the stalks grow tall and wrap us in the coziest green border.
I love that I married into a family with farming roots. My kids have climbed onto combines, ridden tractors and backhoes, and seen firsthand what it means to work hard and fix things with their own hands. Mason has practically grown up at the shop and on the farm — a future farmer through and through.
Although some of us were late to the country life, the children featured in our Kids in Agriculture section were born into it. Farming is in their DNA, and it’s inspiring to see them carrying forward the values, traditions, and grit that keep our community’s agricultural story alive.
Just as farming is part of our heritage, so too are the businesses, organizations, schools, and leaders that make Owensboro a wonderful place to raise a family. In this issue, our Family Favorites section highlights the people and places that truly set our community apart — from kid-friendly restaurants to inspiring teachers and welcoming doctor’s offices. These are the places that support us, care for us, and remind us why Owensboro feels like home.
As you flip through these pages, I hope you enjoy meeting the families in our Kids in Agriculture feature, discovering who our community voted as this year’s Family Favorites, and celebrating all the people and places that make Owensboro such a special place to live. Let’s continue to support them, cheer them on, and take pride in the home we’ve built together.

SCHOLARSHIPS HONOR DUST BOWL LEGACY AND SUPPORT LOCAL STUDENTS
The Owensboro Times, PeezO’s Pizza, Dust Bowl founder Gus Johnson, and the Dust Bowl Committee teamed up to award four $500 scholarships during championship night of the 2025 Dust Bowl at Kendall-Perkins Park.
This year’s recipients are Alexandria Taylor Chappell, Eli Jamison Smith, Mesyiah Brown, and Kayden Lacole Coffman.
The scholarships — created in memory of longtime Dust Bowl supporter Larry “Chick” Owen — were originally planned as two awards. But after an overwhelming community response, Johnson and the Committee doubled the number of recipients.
“This is exactly what my dad would’ve wanted — to support young people in our community,” said Larry Owen, owner of PeezO’s and son of Chick Owen.
Johnson added that the effort honors both Owen and the Dust Bowl’s original founders. “It’s one way of keeping Wayne Stout and Jerry Davenport’s legacy alive in Owensboro,” he said.
The recipients expressed gratitude, calling the Dust Bowl a celebration of unity, culture, and community. From being compared to a “big family reunion” to providing a safe space for the Black community, each student reflected on the tournament’s impact.
For them, the scholarship is both financial support and a symbol of belief. “It shows that my community believes in me,” Smith said.
The initiative continues to grow, with Assistant Editor John Kirkpatrick noting, “To now be at four scholarships just shows how deeply rooted this tournament is in the heart of our city.”
As one of Owensboro’s most iconic summer traditions, the Dust Bowl remains a lasting symbol of history, unity, and giving back.
MALIBU JACK’S INDOOR THEME PARK COMING TO OWENSBORO
Get ready, Owensboro families — one of the largest Malibu Jack’s indoor theme parks is on the way, bringing endless year-round fun for kids, teens, and parents alike.
The 109,000-square-foot space, set to open in part of the former Towne Square Mall, will be filled wallto-wall with activities for all ages. Kids can race around a 40,000-square-foot go-kart track, climb through a 10,000-square-foot soft play zone, or challenge friends in a 6,000-square-foot laser tag arena. Families can bowl on 12 lanes, putt through 18 holes of mini golf, ride the Twist-N-Shout spinning coaster, bump around in bumper cars, or take in a movie at the 4D motion theater. More than 100 arcade games will add to the action, plus there will be birthday cabanas and a casual restaurant for when it’s time to refuel.
“Malibu Jack’s is excited to bring a premier indoor family entertainment experience to Owensboro,” said co-founder Terry Hatton. “We want families and friends to have a destination where they can make lasting memories together.”
For parents, the park means more than just fun — it also brings jobs, energy, and a safe, indoor space where kids can play no matter the weather. The project is expected to create over 120 jobs while giving families a new go-to spot for birthdays, outings, or rainy afternoons.
Mayor Tom Watson called it “the kind of forward-looking project Owensboro needs,” while city leaders emphasized the boost it will give both the local economy and family life.
No opening date has been announced yet, but one thing is certain: when the doors open, Owensboro families will have a new place where “rain or shine, the fun never stops.”
We’re excited to shine the spotlight on these four PAWSitive Performers from West Louisville Elementary School! Congratulations to Brynlea, Dillon, Peyton, and Dean for their hard work, positive attitudes, and the example they set for others. Keep up the great work!

WEDDING THOMPSON ORTHODONTICS
YOU’VE BEEN VOTED FAVORITE ORTHODONTIST YEAR AFTER YEAR BY THE OWENSBORO COMMUNITY. WHAT DOES THIS RECOGNITION MEAN TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?
We feel so blessed to be part of such an incredible dental community—one that truly cares for people. Every day we get to work alongside an amazing team, impacting patients’ lives while growing as individuals.
Being voted Favorite Orthodontist is such an honor because it means we’re carrying forward the culture this practice has stood for since 1981, when Dr. Tony Durall and his wife Cindy laid the foundation. For us, this recognition isn’t just about orthodontics— it’s about continuing a tradition built on faith, family, and service, and making every person who walks through our doors feel truly special.
RUNNING A PRACTICE TOGETHER AS HUSBAND AND WIFE IS UNIQUE! HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIP WITH FAMILY LIFE?
Working together has been such a gift. The challenge is keeping the “life priorities triangle” from flipping upside down—faith first, marriage second, children third, and work fourth. Work often sneaks into evening conversations, but we’re intentional about protecting that order.
As partners, we balance each other out— our strengths fill in for one another’s weaknesses. We’re proud of each other, grateful for what the other brings, and honestly, we’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders. Justin also grew up watching his grandparents, Bud and Marylyn Ervin, who were the original husbandand-wife team in his life. They modeled what it means to serve side by side, and carrying that forward in our own practice feels like an honor and a continuation of their legacy.
PATIENTS OFTEN MENTION THAT YOU GO ABOVE AND BEYOND. WHAT DO YOU THINK SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART AND KEEPS FAMILIES COMING BACK?
Two things: our team and our culture. We’ve been blessed with a team of exceptional human beings—people who are genuine, caring, personable, and fun. We hire based on core values first, then teach orthodontics, because skills can be trained but heart cannot.
Our culture guides everything we do. From morning huddles to monthly meetings to what we choose to celebrate as a team, we’re intentional about reinforcing our mission and values daily. That culture pushes us to keep growing, improving, and finding ways to better serve our patients.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY SEEMS TO BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR WORK. CAN YOU SHARE SOME WAYS YOUR FAMILY AND PRACTICE GET INVOLVED IN OWENSBORO? AND WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT TO YOU?
We believe providing orthodontics is just one piece of how we can make Owensboro a better place to live. From day one, this community embraced us, and we’ve always felt called to give back in meaningful ways.
As a practice, we’ve made serving the special needs community our primary focus. Each year our team participates in Night to Shine, the Color Blast, the Wendell Foster 5K, and other events. We also partner with incredible community leaders like Travis Owsley and his team to provide food and Christmas gifts for families in need.
We feel we’re in a unique position to use our connections to set an example: that we’re all here to serve one another. AS PARENTS YOURSELVES, HOW DOES YOUR FAMILY LIFE INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU CONNECT WITH PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES?
Our good friend Mary Katherine Wathen once told us, “Work isn’t just something you do—it has a purpose and it’s FOR you.” That rings so true for us.
Being part of the WTO team makes us better parents, spouses, and children of God. The lessons we learn, the ways we stretch and grow to serve our patients and our staff—all of it helps us love and care for our daughters, Ellington and Laurel, even better.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT RAISING YOUR FAMILY — AND RUNNING A BUSINESS — HERE IN OWENSBORO?
Owensboro is a place where roots run deep and people truly care. It has that rare mix of southern warmth and small-town connection that made us feel at home right away. People genuinely care— whether it’s our church family, the girls’ teachers, or their friends. We know they’re growing up surrounded by love.
That same support has carried over into our practice. Stepping in as young orthodontists after someone as respected as Dr. Durall could have been intimidating, but this community rallied behind us and gave us the opportunity to grow. When people say, “I can’t believe you all created something like this in Owensboro—it feels like I am in a big city here,” it fills us with pride. It reminds us that we’ve been able to add a little something to a community that has given us so much. OP

Keeping it Real
Waiting for the Harvest
“I can’t wait!” How many times have you heard that from a child in your life?
Whether it is for a big birthday celebration, Christmas morning, or the last day of school—kids are always waiting for something, anything.
Even as adults, oftentimes the hardest thing we do is wait. Whether it is for the promotion we have worked so hard for, or the answer to a prayer we have prayed too many times to count.
We wait.
Recently, my kids and I were driving to eat after church service. We got caught behind a combine on a back road to town.
My 2-year-old was in heaven talking about the big dinosaur truck in front of us. My husband and son were becoming impatient, their stomachs guiding their thoughts. My daughters were amazed by the size, claiming that a car could drive right under it.
I simply sat back and listened to the conversations happening around me.
To me, the combine was nostalgic. It took me back to my childhood.
and even the day.
How waiting can be seen as exciting or excruciating.
And then a seed was planted for this article.
Harvest season is upon us. It is a staple to my childhood: the cutting down of corn stalks that had been our go-to hide-and-seek spots. The smell of soybeans in the air. The sound of combines and tractors in the field behind our house. The cutting and hanging of tobacco. The occasional
the perfect season. The perfect feeling. We are waiting for the next.
Whatever next thing is going to bring us happiness.
Using houses as stepping stones. Upgrading vehicles. Trying to keep up with the people named “Jones.”
We are waiting for the perfect moment to have a baby. To take that risk. To step into that opportunity or experience.
We are waiting for the perfect weather. The perfect moment. The perfect situation.
I grew up in Stanley. Being stuck behind a farm machine of some kind on the way to or from town was a common occurrence. It never failed—on the days I overslept or was running late for curfew, I got caught behind a farmer.
There was nothing I could really do, except wait.
My mind has thought about this several times since that Sunday afternoon. How waiting for a combine to move or turn off could create a mix of emotions, depending on the person
inconvenience of a farm machine on the road.
The waiting.
We have had so many extreme seasons recently. Harsh frigid colds. Torrential downpours and flooding. Over-the-top heat.
When it is cold, we are waiting for the summer sun. When it is raining, we are hoping it ceases. And when the heat comes, we run for air.
Why?
Because we are all searching for
Then, we tell ourselves, we will start planting seeds. Then we can harvest.
But what if a great harvest doesn’t come from perfect weather?
What if an abundant harvest and true bearing of fruit has nothing to do with the “Jones?”
Ecclesiastes 11:4-6 says that if a person waits for perfect weather, he will never plant his seeds. And if he is afraid that every cloud will bring rain, he will never harvest his crops.
As a mom, I want to teach my kids to enjoy the wait. To work hard in the off season. To use the rain, the drought, and the cold to build resilience and character.
It is so easy to grow impatient when we are stuck behind a combine and our stomachs are rumbling. It is so tempting to give up when the rain keeps washing away our seeds.
But the true beauty of the season of harvest isn’t just the outcome or the crops.
It is the process.
It starts with the planting of a seed. OP

GRACE IN THE CHAOS WITH ANDREA KING
Drumroll please! It’s time to announce the 2025 Family Favorites!
The results of these contests are always fun and interesting to read, and especially when I compare the winners to my grandchildren’s personal preferences.
Things have changed a lot just from one generation to the next.
Back in the olden days when my kids were young, our household operated as a benevolent dictatorship –which is to say, I made nearly all of the decisions. It just didn’t occur to me to poll my kids to see what they wanted to do or where they wanted to eat.
Our Family Favorite
At the same time, however, I did take their likes and dislikes into consideration. It was incredibly rare that we ever ate out, unless the kids had accumulated a handful of free personal-size pizza coupons with their Accelerated Reader points.
It simply wouldn’t have made sense to go out to eat as a family at a place where the kids would have just picked at the food I paid good money for.
The fact is, there were far fewer options back then than there are now. On those rare occasions when we did go out to eat, the choices were basically a toss-up between burgers and pizza.
With four kids, there was too great a risk of a 2-2 tie for most votes, so our family came up with a creative
way to eliminate that problem.
Fortunately for me, my kids’ birthdays fell into a neat pattern: July, August, September and October. So automatically, each kid “owned” his or her birthday month, along with every fourth month thereafter. The July kid also got November and March. The August kid got December and April. And so on.
When it was your month, you got to ride up front in the van – in the shotgun seat.
You got the extra M&M after a bag had been divided.
You got to pick out the video on Family Movie Night and the board game on Family Game Night.
You got “the good blanket” to snuggle up in on the couch.
You got to decide what we would do for fun after Saturday chores were completed.
But you also were assigned the dreaded drudgery of sorting and matching the enormous pile of socks on laundry day.
You had to wash the supper dishes and sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
“It’s my month” was a mantra repeated often (and loudly) through those years, regarding the “good” choices.
Likewise, “It’s your month” was trumpeted equally often, and even more loudly, regarding the “bad” choices.
It was a system that worked for us.
And even now, looking back after all these years, I have to admit that the practice of assigning months really was a Family Favorite. OP

LEAF IT TO ME!
A Fall Animal Stack Craft
Looking for a creative way to celebrate the beauty of autumn with your kids? This Leaf Animal Stack craft is the perfect project for a cozy fall afternoon. Using colorful leaves and a bit of imagination, your child can create a cheerful lineup of woodland animals—complete with googly eyes, quirky tails, and lots of personality!
Bonus? It gets you outside collecting supplies and brings a little nature indoors.
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
›› A variety of leaves (different shapes, sizes, and colors)
›› White cardstock or thick paper
›› Black marker or pen
›› Googly eyes
›› Yellow and orange construction paper or cardstock (for beaks and accents)
›› Scissors
›› Glue stick or craft glue
›› Optional: Paint pens or markers for extra details
INSTRUCTIONS: BUILD YOUR LEAF STACK!
STEP 1: Go on a leaf hunt!
Head outside and gather a handful of leaves—try to find a mix of sizes and colors. Flat, dry leaves work best, but slightly flexible ones are great for shaping.
STEP 2: Choose your animal lineup.
In this example, you’ll make (from bottom to top):
›› A hedgehog
›› A green bird
›› A brown bird
›› A purple mouse
›› But feel free to mix it up! Any woodland critter is fair game.
STEP 3: Start with your base animal.
›› Glue a large leaf near the bottom center of your page. This will become the hedgehog.
›› Use a brown marker to draw a face and body on the paper.
›› Glue the leaf over the body as its spiky back.
›› Add black marker “quills” and a googly eye.
STEP 4: Build upward!
Stack each animal on top, gluing leaves as their bodies.
›› For the birds, use a green and a brown leaf and add a triangle beak cut from yellow paper.
›› For the mouse, glue a brownish leaf with a curved paper tail and tiny ears.
STEP 5: Draw the legs and extras.
Use a black marker to connect each animal with fun little stick legs. Add whiskers, dots, feathers, or texture as you wish!
STEP 6: Finish it off.
Add googly eyes to every animal and smiley faces if you’d like. Want a frame? Use fallen leaves to create a natural border around your artwork like in the example!
WHY WE LOVE IT
This craft combines creativity, sensory play, and outdoor exploration. It's perfect for developing fine motor skills, artistic expression, and seasonal appreciation. Plus, it’s totally fridgeworthy—or gift-worthy!
Whether you make one animal or a whole forest full, this craft is sure to be a fall favorite. OP

FRANKENSTEIN’S MONSTER COOKIES
IT’S ALIVE!!! Well, sort of. What started as your run-of-the-mill chocolate chip cookie took a wrong turn through the mad scientist’s pantry. We dumped in hunks of Oreos, shocked it with neon green food coloring, and unleashed a cookie so monstrous it might stomp across your kitchen counter if you’re not careful. They’re gooey, chunky, and dangerously good—aka the kind of cookie you’ll want to devour before the villagers show up with pitchforks.
›› 1–2 tsp green food coloring (gel works best for vivid green)
›› 2 cups (340 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
›› 1 cup roughly chopped Oreo cookies (about 8–10 cookies, cream and all)
INSTRUCTIONS
›› Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
›› Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
›› Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl (or stand mixer), beat butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy (about 2 minutes).
›› Add eggs + flavor: Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla extract.
›› Make it monster green: Add green food coloring to the wet ingredients. Start with 1 teaspoon and adjust until the dough is the shade of Frankenstein you’re dreaming of.
›› Combine wet and dry: Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, mixing until just combined. Don’t overmix.
›› Fold in mix-ins: Stir in chocolate chips and chopped Oreo chunks.
›› Scoop & bake: Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
›› Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until edges are lightly golden but centers still look a touch soft.
›› Cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling.
NOTES & TIPS
›› If you want extra spooky effect, press a few Oreo chunks and chocolate chips onto the tops of the dough balls before baking — they’ll stay visible.
›› These are soft-baked style cookies. If you want crispier edges, bake 1–2 minutes longer.
›› You can swap the Oreo chunks with Halloween Oreos (the ones with orange filling) for a scarier vibe. OP

KIDS IN Agriculture

THE AUD KIDS
Growing Up in Agriculture at CRAVO Farm
For the Aud family, agriculture isn’t just a career path—it’s a way of life. Brad and Lindsey Aud, along with their five children, run CRAVO Farm just outside of Whitesville. Their family’s farm name carries special meaning, created from the first letter of each of their children’s names: Caleb, Raelyn, Andrew, Vivian, and Owen.
Homeschooling gives the Aud kids the flexibility to be deeply involved in farm life. Andrew (13), Owen (11), Caleb (10), Raelyn (9), and Vivian (7) all pitch in with daily chores, livestock care, and
tending the family’s large garden. Together, they’ve found their place in agriculture, each one bringing unique passions and skills to the work they do.
“From the time they could walk, our kids had a job,” Lindsey shared. “They’ve grown up learning the value of responsibility and teamwork.”
CRAVO Farm is bustling yearround. The kids help care for cattle and chickens, and they all pitch in during hay and straw season, cutting, baling, and loading. The family’s garden produces tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, potatoes, peppers,
and watermelon, which they sell at a roadside stand and at the Owensboro Regional Farmers Market. Raelyn, who has a particular love for flowers, even runs her own spring business selling petunias.
The boys have also taken an interest in livestock showing through 4-H’s Feeder Calf program. Andrew, who has been showing for three years, was proud to win Overall in 2024. Owen’s steer won Champion at the Daviess County Fair, while Caleb earned several ribbons in his first year. Raelyn is already proving herself, showing dedication when she took responsibility for caring for a calf named Darla. “We think Darla is the prettiest calf on the farm thanks to Raelyn’s efforts,” Lindsey said.
“They’ve seen farming be both physically and mentally draining, but they’ve also learned to keep a smile on their face and keep moving forward. That’s how we hope they approach life, too.”
Each child has developed their own goals and dreams through their agricultural involvement. Andrew hopes to run his own farm one day, while Owen dreams of becoming both a mechanic and a pilot. Caleb imagines raising cattle, sheep, pigs, and chickens when he’s older, while Raelyn aspires to become a veterinarian. Vivian, still the youngest, is soaking it all in, happiest when she’s working alongside her dad on projects.
Of course, farming brings challenges too. From extreme weather to tough losses with animals, the kids have learned resilience. Whether it’s bundling up to do chores in the cold or coping with the heartbreak of losing a calf, the Aud children face it with determination. “They’ve seen farming be both physically and mentally draining,” Lindsey said. “But they’ve also learned to keep a smile on their face and keep moving forward. That’s how we hope they approach life, too.”
Despite the hard work, the farm is full of fun memories—like Vivian insisting her muscles grew after she accidentally touched an electric fence, or Andrew’s excitement driving a truck for the first time.
For the Aud kids, agriculture isn’t just part of their childhood—it’s shaping their futures. CRAVO Farm is more than land and livestock; it’s where five siblings are growing up with responsibility, grit, and a deep love for farm life. OP
THE KELLER KIDS
Learning Life Lessons on the Family Farm
In Stanley, the Keller family is proving that farming is more than just a livelihood—it’s a way to grow a family rooted in hard work, responsibility, and faith. Michael and Lauren Keller homeschool their four children—John (11), Isaac (9), Elam (7), and Rosie (6)— while also raising them to be active participants in the daily rhythm of their family farm.
From tending animals to growing
vegetables, the Keller kids are involved in nearly every aspect of farm life. “If something needs to be done, they’re part of it,” Lauren explained. That includes gardening, raising livestock, building structures, marketing their produce, and even helping with deliveries for their CSA program.
Each child has found their own special niche. John, the oldest, received rabbits for his 11th birthday and built
their hutch himself. He faithfully cares for them each morning and enjoys carpentry as much as he enjoys animal care. He also plays a big role in vegetable production for the family’s CSA baskets. Isaac manages a flock of egg-laying hens and helps move and feed the family’s pigs, proving himself a steady hand with the animals. Elam tends his own garden, proudly growing food for the family table, while Rosie
has planted her own flowers and vegetables. She delights in seeing her harvest used in the kitchen and dreams of learning to can food alongside her mom.
Daily life on the Keller farm is busy. The two older boys handle feeding and watering animals, gathering eggs, moving fencing, and repairing coops. All four kids help with planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting crops.
Through these tasks, they’re learning skills that reach far beyond the farm: carpentry, responsibility, respect for nature, and an appreciation for where their food comes from.
They’ve also had to face challenges. Losing plants to weather or animals to predators is especially hard. “You develop relationships with them, and it’s tough when something happens,” Lauren said. But the kids have learned resilience—picking up and continuing forward even after setbacks.
The children’s goals reflect their passions. John hopes to expand his rabbit breeding operation and carve out his own piece of the family business. Isaac wants to take on a larger role in animal care. Elam loves gardening and hopes to grow that part of the farm. Rosie, happiest in the kitchen, is eager to learn canning and baking so she can contribute to the family’s newest venture—their farmstand.
Launching this fall, the Keller Farmstand will feature eggs, vegetables, baked goods, and other homemade items grown and prepared by the family. For the Kellers, it’s more than just a roadside stop—it’s a way to connect with neighbors, share healthy food, and give the kids a tangible role in seeing their hard work reach the community. Each child will play a part, whether it’s stocking shelves, helping customers, or providing products they raised themselves.
Favorite memories are tied to animals arriving on the farm: John getting his rabbits, Isaac bringing home their first pigs, Elam and Rosie marveling over baby chicks. These simple moments are the foundation of a childhood shaped by agriculture.
For the Kellers, the farm is as much about teaching life lessons as it is about producing food. “It gives them a sense of purpose and an entrepreneurial drive,” Lauren said. “They’re learning to appreciate the simple joys—the sunrise, the rooster crowing, the garden growing.”
The Kellers see their farm as a work in progress, but one with a clear mission: to raise their children with strong values while serving their community with food that is responsibly grown and lovingly prepared. OP

THE SCOTT KIDS
Building Confidence and Character Through Farm Life
For Matt and Andrea Scott, raising their children in agriculture was always the plan. Growing up in Knottsville, Matt farmed row crops alongside his father while Andrea raised animals. Now, they’re passing that legacy on to their four children— Elaina (10), Molly (8), and twins Hattie and Harlan (6)—on their small hobby farm in Philpot.
Although the Scotts don’t operate a large farm of their own, the kids are deeply immersed in both
small- and large-scale agriculture. At home, they help care for 12 head of cattle, 10 sheep, 2 horses, a miniature horse, and a bustling flock of chickens. Through Matt’s work with his father, the kids also experience corn and soybean farming, giving them a wellrounded view of agriculture. On top of that, all four children are active in 4-H, where they’ve found their passion in showing livestock.
Each child has developed their own role on the farm. Elaina takes on
bigger responsibilities like refilling feed tubs and moving hay. She’s also advanced to showing calves and recently earned reserve grand champion for her heifer. “Elaina says she’s learned to stay calm when frustrated, because the animals can sense your tension,” Andrea shared. Molly, lovingly called the family’s “chicken girl,” cares for the poultry and proudly won overall grand champion for her chicken at the fair last year. She’s also showing calves

now and won reserve champion with her lamb. Hattie and Harlan are still in the early years, but they are eager helpers with the sheep and horses, learning the ropes and preparing for the day they can each show their own animals.
The family’s routine is structured around the animals. Twice a day, the kids feed, water, and walk livestock between the barn and pasture. For the first time this year, they will keep heifers and lambs to breed, which means caring for them through winter. “It’s exciting for them to look forward to raising their first babies,” Andrea said.
The Scotts believe these responsibilities teach invaluable lessons. The kids have experienced the highs of winning ribbons, riding horses over jumps, and selling animals at the 4-H scholarship auction. They’ve also faced tough days: animals escaping, an emergency
vet visit after a horse ate the wrong feed, and plenty of stubbed toes and stepped-on feet. “From all of this, they’ve learned perseverance, responsibility, how to help each other, and how to truly care for the animals,” Andrea explained.
“From all of this, they’ve learned perseverance, responsibility, how to help each other, and how to truly care for the animals.”
Even in the frustrations, the kids have grown. Molly jokes that getting stitches after a sheep-related accident taught her to be tough.
Elaina’s learned patience, while the twins say the best part is all the fun they have with their animals. Favorite memories usually center on bringing home new animals, moments that bring joy and excitement to the whole family.
Outside the farm, the Scotts are equally busy. Elaina competes in archery, plays volleyball, and rides horses in eventing competitions. Molly dances, plays softball, and will soon join archery. The twins play t-ball and take part in 4-H Cloverbuds.
For the Scott kids, farming isn’t just about chores and ribbons— it’s about growing resilience, responsibility, and a deep love for animals. Their days may be full, but every task and challenge is shaping them into confident, capable kids with a strong connection to agriculture. OP

A SPIDERWEB FOR TWO
by Elizabeth Enright

Not your average Halloween story, but perfect for fall. In this mystery-tinged tale, sisters Randy and Oliver follow clues through their small town. A great choice for older elementary readers.
BONE SOUP: A SPOOKY, TASTY TALE
by Alyssa Satin
Capucilli, illustrated by Tom Knight
Kindergarten – 2nd grade
Finnigin the skeleton arrives in town hungry—but no one shares food with strangers. So, he starts cooking bone soup, and spooky hilarity brews.
These not-so-spooky stories deliver gentle thrills and big smiles—whether it’s a cheerful “Boo!” or a broomstick gone rogue, each tale brings humor without the horror. From board books to early chapter reads, these selections meet kids right where they are, while encouraging growth with every turn of the page. Most importantly, the heart of each story lies in timeless themes: friendship, bravery, community, and kindness—all wrapped up in the cozy magic of October.
A New Voice for Parents: Owensboro Health’s Pediatric PFAC and the IMAP Project
When your child is sick, every second matters. Parents of medically complex children know this better than anyone. They’ve spent nights in emergency rooms, navigated long lists of specialists, and often carried binders of notes, forms and test results from one hospital to another. Owensboro Health understands that journey — and that’s why the health system launched a new way for parents to help shape care.
PARENTS AT THE TABLE
In 2024, Owensboro Health created two Patient Family Advisory Councils (PFACs), one for pediatric patients and one for geriatric patients. These groups bring parents and caregivers into direct conversation with providers and leaders. “They’ve already made a difference,” says Director of Patient Experience, Shannon Parham. “These councils make sure parents’ voices are heard so that we can improve care together.”
For pediatric families, the need is urgent. Many parents of chronically ill children have faced gaps in care, whether in medical supplies, skilled team members or communication between hospitals. Owensboro Health wanted to change that.
“One of our parents has a child who needs a very specific medical supply,” Shannon shares. “Our team wants to make sure we have that supply available when the need arises. That’s the kind of direct feedback that changes care.”
A PLAN FOR EMERGENCIES
One of the first projects from the Pediatric PFAC is the Illness Management Action Plan (IMAP).
An IMAP is a written action plan that outlines the best way to care for a child with complex medical needs during an emergency. It’s created by the child’s specialist and shared with the family and emergency care teams.
Think of it as a roadmap for treatment:
›› It lists the child’s diagnosis and unique medical needs.
›› It explains what treatments or medicines work best for that child.
›› It flags what doesn’t work or could be harmful.
For parents, the IMAP provides reassurance. Instead of having to explain a complicated medical history in the middle of a crisis, they can hand over the plan. For providers, it’s a trusted guide that helps avoid delays and ensures care is safe, specific and fast.
“It helps the team know what works for that child right away,” explains Brittany James, RN, Director of Maternity Services. “Every child is different. An IMAP can help provide treatment right away in the middle of a crisis and give parents peace of mind that their child’s current treatment plan is being reviewed.”
MEETING PARENTS WHERE THEY ARE
The council is working on practical ways to spread the word. Flyers with clear instructions are being developed for pediatric offices and the Emergency Department. The flyers will explain what
the IMAP is, how to fill it out, and where to return it.
WHY IT MATTERS
Owensboro Health treats nearly 20,000 children in the Emergency Department each year. Children with complex needs often arrive during urgent situations. The IMAP gives ED providers treatment suggestions that are specifically recommended for this patient by their specialist.
“Parents know their child better than anyone,” Brittany says. “The IMAP honors that knowledge and shares it with the care team. It’s about partnership — parents, providers and specialists working together to keep kids safe.”
A STRONGER FUTURE FOR FAMILIES
The PFACs are still new, but they are already shaping the way Owensboro Health cares for its most vulnerable patients. From securing supplies to building better communication, the councils are giving families a voice in how care is delivered.
“This is just the beginning,” Brittany says. “Parents asked for better tools, and together we’re building them. The IMAP is one step toward making emergency care less overwhelming and more reassuring. When a child comes in, we want parents to know — we’re ready.” Need an IMAP for your child? Talk to their primary care provider at your next visit. OP
