MATH FACTS FLASH CARDS

I love this set of flash cards that comes with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The set can be used with a variety of ages. My son is starting kindergarten while my daughter is going into the fourth grade. I can use these flash cards over multiple years for practicing math skills.

The Llama Llama series has always been a favorite. You can find a story that relates to so many areas of childhood whether it’s about reading, loving a teacher, sharing, making messes and more. My kids and I have always enjoyed this one, “Llama Llama Loves to Read” which is about Llama Llama learning to read by practicing letters, being shown word cards and reading stories. It is a great read anytime during the school year!

MAGNETIC LETTERS & NUMBERS

My kids have always enjoyed this magnetic set of letters and numberswhether they are placing them on a tray or the refrigerator to spell out words or work on their math skills. They can easily practice while I am cooking in the kitchen. It’s a great way to keep learning fun!

SPOTTSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HOLDS SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP

From June 2-13, running from 9:00am to 12:00pm, 12 enthusiastic students from grades 3, 4, and 5 (and one kindergartener) participated in hands-on experiments and engaging activities at Spottsville Elementary School’s Summer Science Camp. Hosted by the dedicated 4th grade team - Blake Book, Meredith Buchanan, Rendy Dixon, and Amanda Kellen - these students focused on animal adaptations, inherited traits, forces and motion, life cycles, biodiversity, ecosystems, and magnets. Students had the opportunity to do several exciting projects including: making slime, building bee hotels, creating sundials and bird nests, planting seeds and designing 3D flowers.

The camp was a fun, educational experience that sparked curiosity and creativity. The students had a blast exploring science in a meaningful and memorable way, and the teachers loved bringing these lessons to life!

JOHN JAMES AUDUBON STATE PARK HOSTS OPERATION WILD SUMMER NATURE CAMPS

This summer children had the opportunity to explore the wonders of WILDlife with a three-day kid’s nature adventure camp at Audubon State Park. Participants began each day with a lesson that revolved around that day’s theme followed by natureoriented fun with games, hikes, crafts, science experiments and more. Three sessions were offered based on age - Chickadees (ages 3-5), Wrens (ages 6-8) and Raptors (ages 9-12).

STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN CAMP BLUE AND BROWN LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE

The Henderson Police Department and the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office hosted a six-week long camp - the Camp Blue and Brown Law Enforcement Experience Each week, a new group of 5th and 6th grade students had the opportunity to connect with local officers, learn about law enforcement, and build teamwork - all while being encouraged and making positive choices. The Central Academy provided the camp location all summer long. There were approximately 50 students who participated this summer. For those interested in participating next summer, brochures will be sent home with students in the spring.

Jessica Baker

KINDERGARTEN TEACHER

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF (FAMILY, PETS, ETC.)

My name is Jessica Baker, and I have been married to my husband, Christian, for 3 years. We have an 11-year-old son, Caiden, and a 1-yearold son named Josiah. We currently don’t have any pets but Caiden is wanting to get some fish.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING, AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THAT ROLE?

I am a kindergarten teacher at Spottsville where I am lucky to work with some of the best teachers, administration, and staff in Henderson County. This is my 10th year of teaching.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT TEACHING? WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES?

I love seeing the growth in my students from the first day of school to the last. I get excited and proud of them when things start to click, especially when it was something they struggled with. I love providing them with memorable moments/days throughout the year to make learning and school fun. The beauty of kindergarten is I get to give them their foundation of learning and show them how much fun school can be.

Some challenges I sometimes face at my job are feeling like I can’t do everything I would like to do because of lack of time or lack of resources. Another challenge is that teaching is not a 9-5 job where once you leave you’re done for the day. There is always something to do, some new center or idea you want to implement so you have to prep/ plan for that, or some student(s) you’re thinking about.

WHEN YOU AREN’T INSIDE THE CLASSROOM, WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ENJOY?

When I’m not in my classroom I am typically running to my oldest son’s games. We all love to read and it’s been nice to see Caiden share some of his favorite books with Josiah and share some of my childhood favorites with Caiden. My family and I also enjoy traveling. Typically when we travel, we have one thing planned that we for sure want to do and the rest is up for chance which has made for some exciting adventures.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?

To be honest, this is something that I continually work at because certain parts of the year are crazier for work or family than others. However, what’s been working the last couple of years is picking a day out of the week where I stay at school longer or take stuff home to work on instead of spending multiple days on work. The years are flying by and my kiddos are growing up fast and I want to be a part of everything they do, so if that means having to adjust work activities then that’s what I’ll do.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE PARENTS FOR KINDERGARTEN READINESS?

It is wonderful if they can write their name, count to 10, know shapes and some letters and sounds, but we also want them to come in having some social/emotional and self-care skills. For example: can they play and share with others, can they follow directions, can they hold a pencil (fine motor skills), or can they put their jacket or shoes on by themselves, etc. Working on some academics, some social/emotional skills, and some self-care skills will give them the best start. It’s okay if they don’t know everything, they will grow so much throughout the year.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE STUDENTS THINKING ABOUT A CAREER PATH IN TEACHING?

Take in all you can during undergrad from different activities, classroom management strategies, etc. Other teachers are some of the best resources you can learn from, so don’t be afraid to ask for help. Teaching is very rewarding but some days are harder than others, but you can get through them and when you look back you’ll see it was all worth it. HF

EASY FRUIT-FILLED BREAKFAST PASTRIES

Mornings during the school year can feel like a sprint—and let’s be honest, sometimes breakfast is whatever you can toss into a backpack on the way out the door. But what if you could whip up a homemade version of a childhood favorite that’s both fun to make and weekday-friendly? These easy homemade pastries use store-bought pie crust and fruity preserves to keep things simple, but the real magic is in the glaze—made by mixing preserves right into the icing for a pop of natural color and berry-bright flavor. Bonus: Kids can help with assembling and decorating, making it a fun weekend activity that doubles as grab-and-go breakfasts for busy school mornings. Whether you’re Team Strawberry or Team Blueberry, these flaky, jammy treats are a sweet way to start the day.

Makes: 6–8 pop tarts

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 20–25 minutes

INGREDIENTS

›› 2 refrigerated pie crusts (the rolled kind)

›› 1/2 cup strawberry preserves

›› 1/2 cup blueberry preserves

›› 1 egg (for egg wash)

FOR THE GLAZE:

›› 1 cup powdered sugar

›› 1–2 tablespoons milk

›› 1 tablespoon strawberry preserves

›› 1 tablespoon blueberry preserves

›› Optional: freeze-dried fruit or sprinkles for topping

INSTRUCTIONS

›› Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

›› Unroll the pie crusts and cut into

rectangles (about 3x4 inches). You should get 6–8 pairs.

›› Add filling: Place 1 tablespoon of preserves (strawberry or blueberry) in the center of half the rectangles. Leave a border around the edge.

›› Seal: Top with the other rectangles and press the edges with a fork. Poke a few holes in the tops to let steam escape.

›› Egg wash: Beat the egg and brush it over the tops for a golden finish.

›› Bake for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown. Cool completely before glazing.

›› Make the glaze: In two small bowls, mix 1/2 cup powdered sugar with 1–2 teaspoons milk and 1 tablespoon of preserves (one bowl for strawberry, one for blueberry). Stir until smooth.

›› Decorate: Spread the glaze on the cooled pastries and top with sprinkles or crushed freeze-dried fruit. HF

HAND-SEWN SOCK MONKEYS

As the back-to-school season kicks off, kids are buzzing with excitement—and maybe a little bit of nervous energy. Help them unwind after a busy day or settle into a weekend routine with a cozy and creative project: turning fuzzy socks into hand-sewn sock monkeys! This heartwarming craft combines imagination, fine motor skill development, and the comfort of a cuddly buddy your child can make all by themselves (with a little help from you).

MATERIALS NEEDED:

›› 1 pair of fuzzy socks (clean, new or gently used)

›› Scissors

›› Hand sewing needle and thread (or fabric glue for younger children)

›› Polyester fiberfill stuffing

›› Buttons for eyes (or felt pieces for younger children)

›› Ribbon or yarn (for optional accessories)

›› Fabric marker (optional, for facial features)

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS:

›› Prepare the Body and Legs

Turn one sock inside out and lay it flat with the heel centered. Draw a line from the sock opening to the heel and cut to create two legs. Sew along each leg line, leaving a small opening for stuffing. Turn the sock right-side out, and stuff with fiberfill. Sew the opening closed.

›› Create Arms, Tail, and Ears

From the second sock, cut two identical pieces for arms, one long strip for the tail, two small pieces for ears and the heel for the mouth area. Sew each piece with right sides together, leaving openings for turning. Turn them right-side out, stuff lightly, and sew the openings closed.

›› Assemble the Monkey

Attach the arms and tail to the body. Position the ears on the head and sew them in place. For the face, use the oval from the sock’s heel or use felt. Sew it onto the face, leaving a small opening to add stuffing for a 3D effect, then sew it closed. Add buttons or felt pieces for eyes, and use embroidery thread or a fabric marker to create a smile.

›› Add Accessories

Personalize your sock monkey with a ribbon scarf, yarn bow, or even a tiny hat. Encourage your child to get creative with the accessories!

SAFETY NOTE:

For children under 8, it’s recommended to use fabric glue instead of a needle and thread, or have an adult handle the sewing portions. Always supervise children during crafting, especially when sewing.

Sock monkeys are a timeless, heartwarming project that repurposes materials you likely already have at home. Whether it’s a rainy day or a creative playdate, crafting these fuzzy friends is sure to bring smiles and sweet memories. HF

WHIMSY IN THE WOODS

“Gnomes of Audubon Forest” Brings Magic, Art, and Education to John James Audubon State Park

Amagical new adventure is waiting to be discovered at John James Audubon State Park. Designed to spark imagination, foster learning, and encourage exploration, the “Gnomes of Audubon Forest” Scavenger Hunt is the latest community-driven project from the Henderson Tourist Commission, and it’s already capturing the hearts and curious minds of the Henderson community.

This whimsical, self-guided scavenger hunt invites visitors to uncover ten gnome homes hidden around the park. Each “home” is marked by a custom-designed, beautifully painted door and represents a fictional gnome who plays an important role in the enchanted Audubon Forest. While the gnomes themselves remain cleverly out of sight, their personalities, talents, and messages are shared through interactive QR codes placed beside each door, explained Abby Dixon, Henderson Tourist Commission Executive Director.

The idea for the hunt began in

a brainstorming session between Abby and Henderson Tourist Commission Marketing Director Ellie Kellen. “We wanted to create something whimsical and magical for families and kids,” said Abby. “We started thinking about how we could use storytelling and art to attract new visitors to the park, especially younger audiences.”

That brainstorming quickly blossomed into a full-fledged project, inspired in part by a playful TikTok video featuring a gnome “exploring” the park.

As the concept developed, Ellie created ten unique gnome characters, each with their own name, traits, and contributions to the forest ecosystem. There’s “Audie Bond,” the leader of the gnomes and protector of birds; another gnome is dedicated to spreading wildflower seeds for pollinators; one collects dew to nourish plants, while

others focus on woodworking, water conservation, or keeping the forest clean.

“We really wanted the project to have an educational element,” Abby noted. “Each gnome teaches a small but meaningful lesson about how we can care for the natural world.”

The QR code messages are written in a rhyming, sing-songy language and narrated from the perspective of each gnome, offering bite-sized environmental tips in a fun and engaging way for all ages. “They’ll say things like,

‘Don’t stray from the trail,’ ‘Pick up litter,’ or ‘Protect the bees.’ It’s a really creative way to make environmental education approachable and memorable for kids,” she said.

The homes themselves are works of art, crafted by students from Henderson County High School’s Career & Technical Education (CTE) and School of Fine Arts (SOFA) programs. CTE students built the doors, while SOFA students painted them, making the installation a true community collaboration and a chance to highlight local talent and engage youth.

“We were thrilled to get students involved,” said Dixon. “It elevated the project from a simple scavenger hunt to an outdoor art installation.”

To further enhance the experience, a companion children’s book was developed by the Tourist Commission and sponsored by the Henderson

BY

County Public Library. The book features the full stories of the gnome characters and is available while supplies last at the Welcome Center and the Audubon Museum & Nature Center. The first 500 copies are free, with additional copies available for purchase once the initial supply runs out.

The scavenger hunt is designed to be permanent and accessible. All ten doors are located in easily walkable areas of the park—not on the wooded trails—making the experience friendly for families with young children or those with mobility limitations. Completing the full hunt typically takes about an hour, though visitors are encouraged to take their time and enjoy the journey.

Once participants locate all ten gnome homes and take a photo with each one, they can return to the museum gift shop to claim a special prize.

Park Manager David Miller expressed, “This will be an amazing way for those of all ages to engage with nature in a playful and memorable way … I encourage visitors to take their time, enjoy the journey, and share their experiences with others.”

For Dixon, the goal is twofold: attract out-of-town visitors to experience the magic of John James Audubon State Park, and foster local pride among Henderson residents. “We want our community’s kids to grow up feeling like this park is a magical place, and that they have a part in taking care of it,” she said. “That sense of ownership starts with experiences like this.”

The Gnomes of Audubon Forest Scavenger Hunt is free and open during park hours. Clues for each gnome home, as well as more information about the characters, can be found at HendersonKY.org/gnomes. HF

Community Partnership Offers New Career Pathway

Look out, Henderson County High!

Yet another exciting, ambitious pathway is coming to the Career and Technical Education unit. In addition to the many opportunities and programs already offered at the school, the firefighting pathway will be lighting up the halls this upcoming 2025-2026 school year.

Aspiring firefighters can expect to learn several skills throughout this program. They will learn about safety, practice physical skills that will be extremely useful to them in their future line of work, study for certifications that they can use for career advancement, and learn life skills that will help them in all aspects of their lives.

This program has been a long time in the works, according to Henderson Fire Division Chief Casey Howard, who will be spearheading the program next school year. He stated that there has been lots of interest from students in this type of pathway, and that the school and the community had strong goals to make it happen. A good amount of interest was sparked when the topic came up at a freshman orientation meeting at Henderson County High by parents, students, local agencies, and the firefighters themselves. There are

programs that exist already throughout the state of Kentucky for this pathway, so adapting the curriculum has been easier than building it from scratch, although it does seem that Chief Howard has his work cut out for him.

“It wasn’t an easy process,” he admitted, “but it helped a lot that the high school already has a well-established Career and Technical Education unit that we could add onto.”

“It’s a four year program,” said Howard. “This means that someone who starts as a freshman will have four courses that they go through to complete the pathway. By the end, that will end up translating to the fire services firefighter one and two certifications. They will get two of the main certifications that most career departments require for their employees. These certifications are liable to be used across the entire state of Kentucky. Anyone who receives them can basically go straight into a job with most fire departments, including

those in Henderson. This program will give the skills and background required to be a firefighter anywhere in the United States, but we hope that this will lead to a growth of firefighters in the Henderson area that will work to help the community.”

Chief Howard has graciously agreed to teach the program starting next year in addition to continuing his firefighting duties. He expressed hopes that the program will grow into something that will require a full-time teacher, which it likely will based on the number of students who expressed interest. For the upcoming school year, there will be two different classes that the students will be split into that will learn the same material. Fortythree students have signed up for the program. “I’m willing to put in the effort as long as it makes the program a success,” Howard disclosed. Career and Technical Education unit principal J.T. Payne also commented on his hopes for the program. “We are

extremely excited about the partnership between CTE and the Henderson Fire Department as we pilot the new fire science program. It will be invaluable to have an active duty firefighter teaching a course to students, which will provide a direct pipeline to our local fire department. We have already had an impressive amount of interest in the program, and expect that to grow over the next few years. We have a 3-year-plan to fully implement the program as a permanent part of our CTE course offerings, which includes offering a new level/course each year. This expands our focus on service-minded careers, and we will now have pathways for students who wish to go into law enforcement, the military, fire science, education/teaching, and the medical field. It is a great example of how education can partner to help solve community issues, and I’m so proud that we get to be part of it at HCHS.”

Good luck to Chief Howard and all involved with this program. Henderson is rooting for your success and in four years, we hope to see several fresh faces in those familiar hard hats ready to serve our community. HF

Dezney’s Delights Behind Every Recipe is a Story and a Memory

The aroma of freshly baked homemade cupcakes fills the home of the Carmon family as Dezney Carmon is turning her passion for baking into a full-time business. “I firmly believe that the energy, time, and love you put into a recipe is just as important as the ingredients you use. At Dezney’s Delights, behind every recipe is a story and memory that is truly something special!”

Growing up, Dezney had the opportunity to learn the love of baking

from a generation of women in her family. Surrounded by bakers on both sides of her family, a foundation was built with a skill set of knowledge and the joy of being in her kitchen making delicious delights for others.

Dezney’s Grandma and greatgrandmother, on her father’s side, owned a local bakery in Henderson - “Mother & Daughter’s Bakery.” The bakery was on the corner of Mill Street and Helm Street and then they moved next door to Eastgate Restaurant.

Her Grandma taught her techniques with cake piping when she would go over to her house and visit as a child. Dezney’s grandmother, on her mom’s side, showed her how to make meals and baked goods from scratch. “I can remember times me and my cousin, Riley, would have cooking competitions and have our Granny judge it because she was so about perfection in her cooking. But doing it in her kitchen just felt something special.”

Growing up next door to her,

Dezney stated, “My grandmother, ‘Granny’ as us grandchildren call her, would patiently guide me through the magic of transforming simple ingredients into culinary delights. She always made time to stop and teach me simple tricks and tips when it came to working in the kitchen. Her passion for cooking and baking, making everything from scratch, eventually became my inspiration. As I got older, I found interest in experimenting with new flavors and techniques, taking the base knowledge that I have learned from women in my family, and finding my own unique voice in the kitchen. And the rest is history!”

The baking enthusiast had a window of opportunity open in March 2023 to begin her small business on the side - as she has been a third grade teacher at Spottsville Elementary School for the past five years. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and dual certification in special education K-12 and elementary education K-5. Dezney completed her student teaching and

practicum at Spottsville and fell in love with the school. Originally, she had planned to pursue a career as a nurse practitioner, but after doing clinical work in the emergency room she decided to switch gears. She wanted to figure out what she could do to still work with people and give care that she likes to give to her community and that’s when she decided to pursue teaching.

In August 2023, Dezney and her husband, Andrew, welcomed their rainbow babies. “They are our world. We would have never guessed we would have had twins but now we can’t imagine it any other way.”

Over the last couple years, Dezney found it difficult working full time as a teacher and having twin boys who have faced a variety of sicknesses. One of the twins had a kidney condition, and then they faced prolonged sickness where one would get sick and then the other.

In between working as a teacher and raising her two boys, Tucker Ray

and Cooper Klay, Dezney found delight in baking on the side. Her dad and family members had encouraged her to try to start something small. “I had pondered on that for many years, so that’s when I decided to do it as a side business.”

She learned about obtaining her home processing cottage license in which she can only use certain ingredients baking within her home. This is a certificate within the State of Kentucky. Word was spread on social media, and her business took off with orders. Once her clientele began to grow, her husband suggested she step away from her full-time career as a teacher and bake full time while being a stay-at-home mom to their twins. Dezney’s love for being a teacher is something she holds dear. “I just know at the time being I feel like God has given me signs that this is what I need to do.”

The signs continue to confirm her decision to move from a side business to baking full time as the opportunity to expand continues to grow! Dezney and her husband recently purchased a trailer that will be converted into “Dezney’s Delights: On-The-Go Bakery.” The excited baker said, “This dreamy little trailer is getting a sweet makeover!”

Dezney is thrilled to offer an onthe-go option perfect for events of all kinds. From birthdays and weddings to retirement and business parties, this on-the-go bakery will be offering a fresh and charming dessert experience.

“Dezney’s Delights” is known for gourmet cupcakes. “I try to be unique in my flavors. When you have a business, I think it’s important to make something about your business different from others. I don’t offer a standard size cupcake. My cupcakes are in tulip cupcake liners so they are a little taller version and come in pretty wrappers. That’s one thing I do about specialty business. I am all about a good presentation,” expressed the excited owner.

She offers a variety of unique

flavors such as cookie dough, strawberry crunch, and confetti cake batter icing. Outside of her gourmet cupcakes, her bakery offers cookies, cheesecake bites and protein bites. Dezney is always brainstorming new ideas and trying various flavors while experimenting with new methods. The inventive baker noted how customers always say her cupcakes are some of the moistest cupcakes they have ever had. Her cupcake recipe holds a special secret that guarantees moist cupcakes every time! “I take customized orders, and I usually tell people to book two weeks out.”

When preparing orders, Dezney will make extras and post those on social media for customers to claim. Now that she is doing this full time, she is going to offer delivery options since Corydon can be a bit of distance for customers. Although she has never had anyone complain about driving to pick up orders, she is happy to be able to make the accommodation.

There are so many reasons Dezney loves baking. She stated, “The blend of being able to be creative and the precision that it requires. I love that I can take simple ingredients and through skill and timing turn them into something that brings people joy and happiness. There is something that is deeply rewarding about seeing someone smile or giving me positive reviews when they’ve tasted something I've created because there is a lot of work that goes into that so the positive feedback that I get makes me very happy. That's one of the most rewarding things. I love seeing people appreciate my work.”

The process of building the perfect recipe from start to finish is one of the most challenging areas for Dezney - especially trying to be a mom and having twins at home with her while she is in the kitchen. Time management is key when balancing being a work-

from-home entrepreneur and mom of two. “I am starting to learn a routine to bake a night when they have laid down to bed or early mornings.”

Giving customers an exceptional experience from the moment they place an order to the moment they take their first bite from “Dezney’s Delights” is so incredibly important to the dreamer behind the kitchen island. “I am a very harsh critic of myself. If something doesn't satisfy me and I barely mess up, I am going to redo the entire thing because that’s just how I am. People pay money and I am a perfectionist.”

Taking a leap of faith and going after a passion she has always had is something she prays inspires her sons. Dezney noted, “I hope my boys learn that even though you have a desire to do something it does take time and it does take energy, but when you pour love into something you get good results. I also want them to learn and see that it does take trial and error and making mistakes to be successful. They are going to see along the way because they will be in here with me and see that mistakes are going to be made, but you have to learn from those things to better yourself or better your product.”

The memories Dezney has in the kitchen with her Granny are memories she will never forget, and Dezney can’t wait for her boys to work alongside her, too. Her Granny has shown her all the support in the world on this new venture. The culinarian giggled explaining how her Granny is her taste tester because she has the knowledge behind baking and will be an honest critic. It’s neat to see how the roles have reversed in a way as the young girl who once stood in the kitchen beside her Granny - observing and listening - gets to now take so many of those simple tricks and techniques she was taught and incorporate them into her own.

Although Mrs. Carmon has officially stepped away from teaching, there are so many skills she will be taking and using within her bakery business that were once used in her teaching career such as time management, organizational skills and math. She expressed how organization was key within the classroom and always a strong suit of hers. When you are in charge of twenty-two kids it's an essential skill - as it is within any workforce setting. While working in the school system, Dezney worked with both students and parents. At the end of the day, there were so many kids and families being impacted in the community as a whole, and Dezney now gets to transition that into her baking business.

“For me, the kitchen is more than just a room; it’s a space of memories, where stories and some of life's most valuable lessons are told. It’s a place I hope to carry the same traditions down to my kids, just as my Granny did for us grandchildren. To my Granny, cooking is an act of love. It’s not about perfection but passion for her family. And trust me, food tastes better when made with love. Behind every sweet treat is a story, of some kind. Whether it’s a secret ingredient or a fond memory, food is a narrative. You don’t need to wait for someone to pass down that story, you can start creating your own. And that’s just what I did to have what is now my small business, Dezney’s Delights!
