Louie Psihoyos | USA | 2009 | 90’ In the 1960s Ric O’Barry captured and trained the 5 dolphins who played “Flipper.” But his close relationship with those dolphins led him to a radical change of heart which has brought him to Taiji in Japan, a town that by day appears to be devoted to the wonders and mysteries of the dolphins and whales that swim off their coast. For it is here, under cover of night, that the fishermen of Taiji engage in a secret and bloody hunt that they will go to great lengths to halt anyone from seeing. O’Barry recruited a team of underwater sound and camera experts, special effects artists, marine explorers, adrenaline junkies and world-class free divers to carry out an undercover operation to photograph the off-limits cove. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism and eco-adventure which captures the magnificence of the dolphins and the ocean around them.

Humorous but affectionate, this cult mockumentary has become a word-of-mouth hit on the UK folk scene. Derecq, a tractor mechanic from west Dorset lives for morris dancing, but falls foul of the rules due to his interest in improvising - an absolute no-no to the Morris Circle. He and his team are rusticated and their hankies confiscated.

From there he goes to California, where he’s a hero among Orange County Morris, a boy band-like team that’s owned by one Miroslav Villandry, a hippy philanthropist and patron of folk dance in America.

In Mato Grosso do Sol tension is rising between the wealthy farming classes and the workers on their land - the indigenous Guarani-Kaiowá. When a suicide takes place it stirs up a rebellion in which both sides are forced to face each other, clashing both ideologically and physically. A funny, touching and beautiful road movie - set entirely in a flat! Stephen Turnbull (Edward Hogg from The Mighty Boosh,) hasn’t been outside in months.

When a sudden infestation of mice forces him to abandon his routine, he finds his mind hurtling back to the disastrous trek around Europe he undertook with his friend Bunny. Two gambling addicts let loose for the first time, they are hopelessly unprepared for the adventure that awaits them. Stephen’s flat becomes the springboard for an extraordinary odyssey through lands made up of snapshots and souvenirs, from the industrial wastelands of Silesia to the bull fields of Andalucia.

Matt Damon shines as the USA’s highest-ranking corporate whistle-blower in Soderbergh’s smart and funny new film. Seeing himself as something of a crusader for truth, justice and the common man, Marc Whitacre volunteers information on his company’s multi-national price fixing conspiracy to the FBI. But Whitacre has been less than candid about some of his other activities, and a series of ever more jawdropping revelations follow. The convoluted twists and turns of Whitacre’s imagination make it almost impossible to separate out fact from fantasy and provide dramatic and comic tension, aided by the combination of Soderbergh’s confident direction and Damon’s pitch-perfect performance.

A SERIOUS MAN (15)

Joel Coen | Ethan Coen | USA | 2009 | 106’ A new Coen brothers movie is always something to look forward to, and A Serious Man turns out to be one of their very best. Larry is a good husband and father who always tries to do the fair and just thing in the face of life’s temptations and trials. But one day, everything starts to go wrong. His wife leaves him, his career as a professor is put in jeopardy and his unemployable brother is becoming more and more of a burden. Larry’s attempts to find some equilibrium and be a righteous man in the face of all these vexations is the source of a great deal of droll humour, particularly acute in his attempts to seek guidance from a succession of uninspiring or unavailable rabbis. Michael Stuhlbarg is unshowily excellent as Larry. Classic Coen brothers then, for those who enjoy a chuckle.

Truth is, it’s a great movie, featuring fantastic performances, imaginative and compelling use of technology producing maximum effect with minimum resources, and brilliant use of sound effects. “The fear of what happens at night while you are asleep,” director Oren Peli has observed, “is a primal one that everyone has in common.” It’s this feeling of vulnerability that this slow-burning supernatural chiller so effectively exploits, fashioning heart-stopping scares out of almost nothing. Jim Jarmusch | Spain | USA | Japan | 2009 | 116’ Jarmusch’s audacious, brave, bizarre and very beautiful film is a poetic, allusive and visually stunning variation on the conventional hitman movie. Isaach de Bankolé, cool as hell in Point Blank suits, is perfect as a taciturn, solitary agent sent to Spain, where a string of coded café encounters with various mysterious eccentrics (Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Gael García Bernal) eventually leads to a deadly assignation. With his deliciously dry humour, a picaresque narrative is packed with literary, artistic, musical and cinematic allusions ranging from Cubism to Kaurismäki, Le Samourai to Schubert, Jarmusch is inviting us to take a trip. Full of richly rewarding surprises and revelations, it’s well worth climbing on board.
