Look out for our annual Film Festival which runs from 15 – 28 January. This year we feature some extraordinary films, many of which reflect some of the problems we face as part of a global community.

We also continue with our ever-expanding popular programme of live broadcast events and, we feature all the major new cinema releases for you to enjoy, with some great titles to see as the Awards season approaches too.

AMY STERLY THE SOUND OF READING Amy Sterly is currently exploring the world of books and reading; what it means to move away from those beautiful and physical objects, from the visual beauty to the sounds, the smells and the textures that are lost: “The tactile nature of books creates a sensual response that surpasses reactions to digital equivalents”.

Ar hyn o bryd mae Amy Sterly yn archwilio byd llyfrau a darllen; yr hyn mae’n golygu i symud i ffwrdd o’r eitemau hardd a chorfforol hynny, o’r harddwch gweledol i’r seiniau, aroglau a’r gweadau colledig: “Mae natur gyffyrddol llyfrau yn creu ymateb synhwyraidd sy’n rhagori ar ymatebion cywerthoedd digidol.”

This exhibition will include an installation that considers these ideas, alongside a series of prints and a performance of the 'Sound Book Project' at the opening event.

CARDIGAN ART SOCIETY ANNUAL EXHIBITION This annual exhibition is a popular fixture in Oriel Mwldan’s gallery programme, showcasing range of art works from local artists.

For half a century CAS has promoted the visual arts in the area by providing its members with a mutual support system consisting of talks, demonstrations and workshops. Exhibition opening & prize-giving at 18:00 on 24.03.16 – all are welcome!

Oriel Mwldan is curated in partnership with Oriel Davies, Newtown. The gallery is open every day (from 5pm on a Monday) and admission is free. We frequently hold opening receptions where you can meet the artists and discuss the work. Please join our gallery mailing list via our Facebook page, website or Box Office for further information about this and the artist’s wokshops that we hold alongside the exhibitions.

LES PÊCHEURS DE PERLES (BIZET) For the first time since Enrico Caruso starred in the opera in 1916, the Met will present Bizet’s lush, melodic romance Les Pêcheurs de Perles (The Pearl Fishers), in a production by director Penny Woolcock, who made her Met debut staging John Adams’s Doctor Atomic. Gianandrea Noseda conducts a cast led by Diana Damrau as the beautiful priestess

Leïla. Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien sing the roles of Nadir and Zurga, the two pearl fishers whose friendship is tested by their rivalry for Leïla’s affections; their “Au fond du temple saint” is one of the most beloved duets in opera.

Nicolas Testé sings the high priest Nourabad in the new production.

RHAPSODY / THE TWO PIGEONS (Ashton | Messager | Rachmaninoff) This delightful Frederick Ashton double bill opens with his setting of Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, using the music’s dark turbulence and brilliance to inspire some of his most thrilling choreography. Witty, impassioned and sublime this ballet was the pinnacle of Ashton’s romantic style.

The second half of the programme features Ashton’s delicate, deceptively comic The Two Pigeons - a work rarely performed and a real treat for ballet fans everywhere.

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES This highly anticipated new production, directed by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus) marks the play’s thirtieth anniversary.

Starring Elaine Cassidy (The Paradise), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire).

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton's irresistible adaptation swept the board, gaining critical acclaim. Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge.

While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

Marco Berti sings Calàf, the suitor who risks his head for Turandot’s hand, and Alexander Tsymbalyuk sings Timur. Paolo Carignani conducts Franco Zeffirelli’s visually spectacular 1987 production.

Iolo Williams takes us on a wildlife tour of his Welsh homeland. Iolo is Wales’ best-known naturalist and his witty, enthusiastic and friendly style is sure to please budding naturalists of all ages.

Iolo has recently completed a landmark series on the landscape of Wales called ‘Tir Cymru’ for S4C and is currently working on a series on Birds for BBC Wales and a series on Welsh Wildlife for BBC 2 network.

Over the last few years Iolo has been one of the presenters on BBC 2’s SpringWatch & AutumnWatch.

LA TRAVIATA (Verdi) La traviata is regarded as one of Verdi’s finest operas, and Richard Eyre’s traditional staging, is one of The Royal Opera’s most popular productions. The opera tells the story of the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry, one of opera’s greatest heroines, based on the real life courtesan Marie Duplessis, who died in 1847 aged just 23. In this revival, Violetta is sung by Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva in her debut with The Royal Opera, following her successful appearance as Violetta at the Glyndebourne Festival.

Combining the influences of folk, minimalism, classical and film music to produce something “fascinating, remarkable and impressively original” (The Guardian). Their first two albums were recorded in some intriguing settings, including churches, chapels, a greenwood barn, an allotment shed, the top of a Welsh waterfall and the underside of a Bristol flyover and have garnered much critical acclaim.

Three Cane Whale are supported by Estonian violinist Maarja Nuut who featured on their third album "Palimpsest", which was recorded last summer at Real World Studios, with Adrian Utley from Portishead.

In October 2007 Ray Gravell, a man who for many embodied what it is to be Welsh, passed away after succumbing to complications resulting from contracting diabetes. An actor, a cultural icon, a father, a husband, a man with a life packed full of stories that deserve to be heard once more. ‘Grav’ will remind the world once more of a unique life well lived and of a man who did so much more than eat soft centres.

Mr Bulkeley o’r Brynddu is an adaptation of William Bulkeley’s diaries which gives us a vivid picture of life in 18th century Wales. The production consists of excerpts from his diaries in William Bulkeley’s own words – in English. The context of the linking Welsh dramatic pieces should be easily understood. Songs and music of the period mentioned in the diaries are an integral part of the production. Perfect for Welsh learners.

Regarded as one of Donizetti’s finest works, the opera has not been seen at the Royal Opera House in more than a decade, so this new production by Katie Mitchell will be a particularly important and exciting event. The title role will be sung by Diana Damrau, an expert in the coloratura repertory, while American tenor Charles Castronovo takes on that of her secret lover, the reckless and passionate Edgardo.

Mae’r band 6 darn syfrdanol 9Bach yn dychwelyd i Aberteifi yn dilyn eu cyngerdd rhyfeddol yng Nghastell Aberteifi yn ystod yr haf eleni. Mae eu caneuon wedi gwreiddio’n ddwfn yng Ngogledd Cymru frodorol y band, a chenir y caneuon ym mamiaith yr aelodau.

Twelfth Day yw’r ffidlwr Catriona Price a’r delynores Esther Swift o Ynysoedd Orkney a Gororau’r Alban. Mae’r ddwy yn canu, yn aml yn unsain, gan greu llais newydd sydd heb fod yn debyg i’r naill na’r llall.

Exquisite 6-piece 9Bach return to Cardigan after their wonderful concert at Cardigan Castle last summer to promote their new album released this spring. Their songs are solidly rooted in their native north Wales and sung in their mother tongue.

Their previous album Tincian, released by Realworld, won the prestigious Best Album prize at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2015.

Twelfth Day are fiddle player Catriona Price and harpist Esther Swift from Orkney and the Scottish Borders. They both sing, often in unison, creating a new voice that is neither one nor the other.

They have recently released an EP called Shell Story which is a sister record to last year’s album The Devil Makes Three.

As usual the whole thing deteriorates swiftly into a heartfelt rant about his children.

If for any reason you are unable to make a performance or screening you have booked for, your tickets can be returned up to seven days in advance of a performance, and we will issue you with a full credit note.

Alternatively we can exchange your tickets for a more suitable performance of the same show or film, or in the event of a full house we will do our best to re-sell your tickets for you (although this cannot be guaranteed).

Theatr Mwldan is situated in the centre of Cardigan - turn left at the north end of the High Street/Pendre. There is ample parking behind the theatre for cars and coaches. Parking is free after 6pm.
