MARTYN JOSEPH Martyn Joseph is a performer like no other. He’s a jaw-dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style, teamed up with a powerful show-stopping voice, and has been called ‘The Welsh Springsteen’. Martyn’s music is hard to categorise, but sometimes music doesn’t need a defining genre and with the ability to articulate a sense of the bigger picture, Martyn’s music and social commentary manage to empower and speak for many. His songs are pictures, stories and feelings all put to music and delivered by a master craftsman. Mae Martyn Joseph yn berfformiwr heb ei ail. Mae’n chwaraewr gitâr rhyfeddol gydag arddull unigryw sy’n uno â llais nerthol syfrdanol. Mae cyfosodiad yn brif thema yng ngwaith Martyn ac mae ‘na amlbwrpasedd i’w gerddoriaeth sy’n anodd ei gategoreiddio. Mae ei ganeuon yn lluniau, ac yn straeon, a theimladau wedi eu gosod i gerddoriaeth a’u cyflwyno gan Feistr ar ei Grefft. Martyn Joseph. Dawn unigryw caiff ei yrru gan angerdd a chariad tuag at ei alwedigaeth, yn parhau i ysgrifennu, canu a chwarae o’r galon.

RIGOLETTO

The corruption of innocence is at the heart of Verdi’s potent tragedy in David McVicar’s production for The Royal Opera. Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect. Giuseppe Verdi wrote in 1855 that Rigoletto was his ‘best opera’. He had to overcome state censorship to stage it – the censors objected to its depiction of an immoral ruler – but he was vindicated by the premiere’s huge success in 1851. Rigoletto remains one of the most popular of all operas. Mae llygredd diniweidrwydd wrth galon trasiedi rymus Verdi yng nghynhyrchiad David McVicar ar gyfer The Royal Opera. Caiff Rigoletto, cellweiriwr llys Dug Mantua, ei felltithio gan dad un o ddioddefwyr y Dug am chwerthin yn amharchus. Pan mae’r Dug yn denu Gilda, merch Rigoletto, mae’n ymddangos bod y felltith yn cael effaith... mae cynhyrchiad McVicar yn amlygu’r creulondeb wrth galon llys Mantua. Erys Rigoletto’n un o’r operâu mwyaf poblogaidd erioed.

OSCAR WILDE SEASON LIVE

CÉZANNE PORTRAITS OF A LIFE

A WOMAN OF NO IMPORTANCE

From the National Portrait Gallery London, Musée d’Orsay Paris & National Gallery of Art Washington DC Directed by Phil Grabsky

This new, classically staged production of Oscar Wilde’s comedy is directed by Dominic Dromgoole, former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe. The first play from the Classic Spring Theatre Company’s Oscar Wilde Season, A Woman of No Importance will be broadcast live to cinemas from the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End.

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN is thrilled to present one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before traveling to London and Washington. One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now. Cyflwyna EXHIBITION ON SCREEN arddangosfa sy’n canolbwyntio ar waith portreadau Paul Cézanne, sy’n agor ym Mharis cyn teithio i Lundain a Washington. Ni ellir gwerthfawrogi celf yr 20fed ganrif heb ddeall arwyddocâd athrylith Paul Cézanne. Gan gynnwys cyfweliadau gyda churaduriaid ac arbenigwyr a gohebiaeth gan yr arluniwr ei hun, mae’r ffilm yn tywys cynulleidfaoedd y tu hwnt i’r arddangosfa i’r lleoedd bu Cézanne yn byw ac yn gweithio ynddynt, gan daflu goleuni ar yr arluniwr sydd efallai’r lleiaf hysbys ymhlith yr holl argraffiadwyr - hyd nawr. 6

An earnest young American woman, a louche English lord, and an innocent young chap join a house party of fin de siècle fools and grotesques. Nearby a woman lives, cradling a long-buried secret. First performed in 1893, Oscar Wilde’s marriage of glittering wit and Ibsenite drama satirised the socially conservative world of the Victorian upperclass, creating a vivid new theatrical voice which still resonates today. Caiff A Woman of No Importance ei darlledu’n fyw i sinemâu o Theatr Vaudeville yn West End Llundain. Mae menyw Americanaidd ifanc ddifrifol, Arglwydd Seisnig, a dyn ifanc diniwed yn ymuno mewn parti diwedd y ganrif sy’n llawn cymeriadau rhyfedd. Gerllaw mae menyw yn byw a chanddi gyfrinach dywyll. Wedi ei pherfformio’n gyntaf ym 1893, roedd cyfuniad Oscar Wilde o ffraethineb disglair a drama arddull Ibsen yn gwatwar byd cymdeithasol ceidwadol dosbarth uchaf Oes Fictoria, gan greu llais theatraidd bywiog newydd sy’n dal i atseinio hyd heddiw.

CARMEN Brought to life by Georges Bizet in this worldrenowned opera, the production was initially a failure on its debut in 1875; themes of passion, sensuality and violence proving too much for early audiences. The music that he conducted would go on to become one of the most famous compositions within the opera community and beyond. The story deals with the love and jealousy of naïve soldier Don José who’s lured away from his beloved by the gypsy factory-girl Carmen, whom he allows to escape from custody. When the charming torero, Escamillo, captures Carmen’s heart, the distraught Don José finds out, leading to tragic consequences. This modern interpretation is performed in the enchanting setting of the Terme di Caracalla in Rome. Mae Carmen yn delio â chariad a chenfigen y milwr naïf Don José sy’n cael ei ddenu i ffwrdd o’i anwylyd gan y ferch ffatri sipsi Carmen, ac mae’n ei chaniatáu i ddianc o’r ddalfa. Wedi ei llwyfannu gan y cyfarwyddwr o’r Ariannin, Valentina Carrasco, dyma ddehongliad modern sydd wedi ei berfformio mewn lleoliad cyfareddol y Terme di Caracalla yn Rhufain, safle archeolegol y Baddonau Rhufeinig ble daw profiad theatraidd unigryw yn fyw.

Luke Jermay is the most incredible man you’ve probably never heard of. He can read your mind. No really; he can read your mind. He doesn’t use mind games or psychological tricks; he is not a trickster, there are no smoke and mirrors. He can simply read your mind. His awe inspiring intuitive abilities have gained him high profile fans such as Derren Brown, Dynamo and Uri Geller who all agree Jermay is astonishing. ‘Luke Jermay’s - Sixth Sense’ has gained critical acclaim with 5 Star reviews from Edinburgh to London’s West End. Wedi ysgrifennu a pherfformio gan Luke Jermay. Wedi cyfarwyddo gan Michael Weber. Mae’n debyg mai Luke Jermay yw’r dyn mwyaf anhygoel nad ydych wedi clywed sôn amdano. Gall ddarllen eich meddwl. Tosca is one of the great evenings of opera, and from its strident opening chords conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. This handsome production throws into relief the ruthlessly taut drama, as the tension is wound up towards a fateful conclusion. Puccini’s meticulously researched score is infused with the same authentic detail, from distant cannon fire during the Act I Te Deum to tolling church bells and the sounds of a firing squad. Tosca remains one of the most performed of all operas – with its gripping plot and glorious music, it’s easy to see why. Mae Tosca yn un o oreuon opera, ac o’i chordiau agoriadol croch mae’n consurio byd o ansefydlogrwydd gwleidyddol a bygythiad. Mae cynhyrchiad Jonathan Kent i’r The Royal Opera yn cipio terfysg gwleidyddol Rhufain ym 1800. Mae Scarpia, Pennaeth yr Heddlu, yn erlyn ac yn arteithio gelynion y Wlad. WOMAN OF FLOWERS

by/gan SIÔN EIRIAN after/gan ddilyn SAUNDERS LEWIS

Blodeuwedd isn’t like other women, conjured from wild flowers by the wizard Gwydion to be the perfect wife for the warrior prince Llew. But nature’s wild waves surge in her blood and when the dark desires woven into her nature are awakened, the consequences are bloody for all around her. Woman of Flowers is a strikingly poetic reimagining of the Mabinogi myth of Blodeuwedd by award-winning Welsh writer Siôn Eirian. Eirian skilfully combines Saunders Lewis’ Welsh language verse drama of the same name with original material to create a captivating dark fantasy. Dyw Blodeuwedd ddim fel merched eraill. Fe’i consuriwyd o flodau gwyllt gan y dewin Gwydion a’i rhoi’n wraig berffaith i’r tywysog a’r rhyfelwr Lleu, ond mae gwylltineb natur yn rhan o’i gwead a phan ddeffroir ei nwydau synhwyrus mae’r canlyniadau yn rhai gwaedlyd a brawychus. THE WINTER’S TALE SHAKESPEARE’S TALE OF LOVE AND LOSS BECOMES COMPELLING DANCE DRAMA IN CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON’S BALLET ADAPTATION, WITH MUSIC BY JOBY TALBOT

Building on the success of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Winter’s Tale received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. A Christopher Wheeldon adaptation with powerful designs by Bob Crowley and atmospheric music by Joby Talbot, The Winter’s Tale is a masterful modern narrative ballet. Creodd Christopher Wheeldon ei addasiad o ramant Shakespeare The Winter’s Tale ar gyfer y Royal Ballet yn 2014. Erbyn hyn caiff ei ystyried yn glasur bale modern. Mae’r stori’n dilyn dinistriad priodas drwy genfigen, cefnu ar blentyn a chariad sydd yn anobeithiol ar yr olwg gyntaf. Ond, trwy edifeirwch - ac ar ôl dychwelyd gwyrthiol i fywyd - mae’r diweddglo’n un o faddeuant a chymod.

CARMEN

Carmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form – numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. This ever-popular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical production. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors. For Carmen he has devised a far fromtraditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character. Carmen yw darn gwaith mwyaf adnabyddus y cyfansoddwr Ffrengig Georges Bizet, ac un o’r operâu mwyaf enwog erioed. I gychwyn, roedd cyfuniad o nwyd, cnawdolrwydd a thrais yr opera yn ormod i’r llwyfan ac roedd yn fethiant beirniadol yn ei phremiere ym 1875. Bu farw Bizet yn fuan wedi hynny, heb fod yn ymwybodol o’r llwyddiant rhyfeddol y byddai Carmen yn cael ar draws y byd wedi hynny. Caiff yr opera gwedd newydd yng nghynhyrchiad hynod gorfforol Barrie Kosky, sy’n bell o fod yn fersiwn traddodiadol.

On a steamy night in Mississippi, a Southern family gather at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell. Brick and Maggie dance round the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the future of the family at stake, which version of the truth is real – and which will win out? Ar noson boeth ym Mississippi, mae teulu o’r De yn dod ynghyd i ddathlu pen-blwydd Big Daddy. Mae’r gwres llethol bron a bod mor ormesol â’r celwydd maent yn rhaffu. Mae Brick a Maggie yn dawnsio o gwmpas y cyfrinachau a’r tyndra rhywiol sy’n bygwth dinistrio eu priodas. BERnSTEIN CENTENARY Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz and modernism, the traditions of Jewish music and the Broadway musical – and many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. He was particularly associated with Jerome Robbins, their credits together including Fancy Free and West Side Story. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. Roedd Leonard Bernstein yn un o’r cyfansoddwyr clasurol cyntaf yn America i dderbyn clod poblogaidd a beirniadol. Roedd yn eclectig o ran ei ffynonellau - gan dynnu ar jazz a moderniaeth, traddodiadau cerddoriaeth Iddewig a sioeau cerdd Broadway - ac mae nifer o sgoriau Bernstein yn hynod o addas ar gyfer dawns. THERE WAS AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY

Verdi’s life-long love affair with Shakespeare’s works began with Macbeth, a play he considered to be ‘one of the greatest creations of man’.

The 45th Anniversary Production! Written by Steven Lee, Directed by Nick Lane

The warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesy that he shall become king himself, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts.

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly. I don’t know why she swallowed a fly...

Phyllida Lloyd’s 2002 production for The Royal Opera is richly hued, shot through with black, red and gold. Lloyd depicts the Macbeths’ childlessness as the dark sadness lurking behind their terrible deeds. The Royal Opera’s production uses Verdi’s 1865 Paris revision of the opera, which includes Lady Macbeth’s riveting aria ‘La luce langue’. Dechreuodd edmygedd Verdi o waith Shakespeare gyda Macbeth, drama a ystyriodd i fod yn un o greadigaethau pennaf dyn. Mae’r rhyfelwr Macbeth yn ymladd ar ochr Brenin yr Alban - ond pan mae cynulliad o wrachod yn proffwydo y bydd ef ei hun yn dod yn frenin, mae uchelgais didostur yn arwain Macbeth a’i wraig i gyflawni gweithrediadau ofnadwy. Set in the idyllic 19th century Paris, LA BOHÈME tells the story of a love affair between a poor poet and a seamstress. MANON

Kenneth MacMillan’s powerful telling of Manon and Des Grieux’s tragic love is a masterpiece of modern ballet, set to music by Massenet. MacMillan found new sympathy with the capricious Manon and her struggle to escape poverty. Designs by his regular collaborator Nicholas Georgiadis reflect this, depicting a world of lavish splendour polluted by miserable destitution. MacMillan’s spectacular ensemble scenes for the whole Company create vivid, complex portraits of the distinct societies of Paris and New Orleans. But it is Manon and Des Grieux’s impassioned pas de deux – recalling the intensity of MacMillan’s earlier Romeo and Juliet – that drive this tragic story, and make Manon one of MacMillan’s most powerful dramas. Mae dehongliad grymus Kenneth MacMillan o gariad trasig Manon a Des Grieux yn gampwaith bale modern, wedi ei gosod i gerddoriaeth gan Massenet. Daeth MacMillan o hyd i gydymdeimlad newydd gyda’r mympwyol Manon a’i hymdrechion i ddianc rhag tlodi. Mae ei olygfeydd ensemble gyda’r Cwmni cyfan yn creu portreadau lliwgar, cymhleth o gymdeithasau gwahanol ym Mharis a New Orleans. Ond pas de deux angerddol Manon a Des Grieux sy’n gyrru’r stori drasig hon, ac yn gwneud Manon yn un o ddramâu mwyaf nerthol MacMillan.

A play by Robert Harling. Chinquapin is a Deep South small town America in the heart of Louisiana, where everyone knows everyone else in an easy-going but definitely matriarchal society. Truvy’s Beauty Shop is the centre of the spider’s web that is the ladies’ network – everything that happens in the town is subject to scrutiny within these four walls. The story follows the interactions between six acquainted but very different women as a complex trail of relationships unfolds. The play is a beautifully written, witty and insightful view of this town within a journey of incredibly nuanced highs and lows. A movie version appeared in 1989, starring Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine and an early casting of Julia Roberts. Drama gan Robert Harling. Mae Chinquapin yn dref fechan yng nghanol Louisiana, lle mae pawb yn adnabod ei gilydd mewn cymdeithas hamddenol, matriarchaidd. EXHIBITION ON SCREEN

ROYAL BALLET

Directed by Phil Grabsky

Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s first ballet score. Given its status today as arguably the best loved and most admired of all classical ballets, it is perhaps surprising that at its premiere in 1877 Swan Lake was poorly received. It is thanks to the 1895 production by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov that Swan Lake has become part of not only ballet consciousness but also wider popular culture.

I, CLAUDE MONET After premiering in Season 4 of Exhibition On Screen, I, Claude Monet is back by popular demand, revealing the heart and soul of arguably the world’s most loved artist. Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. However, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his Giverny garden, his humour, insight and love of life are revealed. Told through Monet’s own words and shot on location at the very spots he painted, the film features his most loved paintings in an unforgettable, immersive art experience. Mae I, Claude Monet yn dychwelyd o ganlyniad i alw mawr, gan ddatgelu calon ac enaid artist mwyaf hoffus y byd. Mae bywyd Monet yn stori afaelgar am ddyn a ddioddefodd y tu ôl i’w gynfasau heulog, o iselder, unigedd a hyd yn oed hunanladdiad. Fodd bynnag wrth i’w gelfyddyd ddatblygu, a’i gariad tuag at arddio arwain tuag at ogoniant ei ardd Giverny, caiff ei hiwmor, mewnwelediad a chariad tuag at fywyd eu datgelu. Wedi ei hadrodd yng ngeiriau Monet ei hun ac wedi ei ffilmio ar leoliad yn y mannau lle hoffai baentio. Running time: 87 minutes

SWAN LAKE

Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. Swan Lake oedd sgôr bale cyntaf Tchaikovsky. Er ei fod erbyn heddiw yn fale mwyaf poblogaidd y byd, ni chafodd ei phremiere ym 1877 dderbyniad llwyddiannus. Drwy ddiolch i gynhyrchiad 1895 Marius Petipa a Lev Ivanov, daeth Swan Lake yn boblogaidd ym myd bale ond hefyd yn ddiwylliant poblogaidd ehangach. Mae’r Tywysog Siegfried yn dod ar draws haid o elyrch wrth hela. Pan mae un o’r elyrch yn troi’n fenyw brydferth, Odette, mae wedi ei gyfareddu. Ond mae hithau o dan swyn sy’n ei chaethiwo, ac ond yn ei chaniatáu i ail-gymryd ei ffurf ddynol gyda’r nos.

THE ORNITHOLOGIST (15) João Pedro Rodrigues | 2016 | Portugal | France | Brazil | 113’

Deliciously subversive and genuinely funny, this is a delightfully meandering, playfully queer riff on the St. Anthony of Padua legend that uses the classic man on a journey of self-discovery motif. Fernando, a solitary ornithologist, is looking for black storks when he is swept away by the rapids. Rescued by a couple of Chinese pilgrims, he plunges into an eerie and dark forest, trying to get back on his track. Is this a big sexy joke or an earnest, religious and intellectual inquiry into the boundaries of spiritual and physical adventure? Yn wyrdroadol ac yn wirioneddol ddoniol, dyma i chi gyflwyniad troellog, rhyfedd a chwareus ar chwedl St Anthony o Badua sy’n defnyddio’r thema glasurol o ddyn ar siwrnai hunan-ddarganfyddiad. Mae Fernando, yn adaregydd sy’n chwilio am storciaid du pan gaiff ei sgubo i ffwrdd gan ddyfroedd gwyllt. Caiff ei achub gan bererinion o Tsieina, ond yna’n crwydro i fforest dywyll ac iasol wrth geisio dod o hyd i’w ffordd nôl. Ai jôc fawr secsi yw hon neu ymholiad difrifol, crefyddol a deallusol i derfynau antur ysbrydol a chorfforol? SUBTITLES | IS-DEITLAU

I AM NOT A WITCH (12A) Rungano Nyoni | 2017 | UK | France | 93’

The people of nine-year-old Shula’s village don’t waste time crying over spilt well-water – they look for someone to blame, and Shula, new to town, with no family, is the obvious choice. Denounced as a witch, she is taken to a governmentrun travelling witch camp. This arresting first feature from Zambia-born, Wales-raised Rungano Nyoni crafts a framework of superstition and ritual onto which is hung a vividly realised, enigmatic portrait of a child’s life. Nid yw’r bobl ym mhentref Shula, merch naw mlwydd oed, yn gwastraffu unrhyw amser wrth edrych am rywun i feio am eu hanffodion, a Shula, yn newydd i’r dref, a heb unrhyw deulu, yw’r dewis amlwg. Wedi ei chondemnio fel gwrach, caiff ei rhoi mewn gwersyll teithiol i wrachod caiff ei redeg gan y Llywodraeth. Mae’r ffilm drawiadol gyntaf hon gan Rungano Nyoni a anwyd yn Zambia ond a fagwyd yng Nghymru, yn saernïo fframwaith o ofergoeliaeth a defod ac ar hwnnw mae’n hongian portread hynod realistig ac enigmatig am fywyd plentyn.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (15) Luca Guadagnino | 2017 | Italy | France | Brazil | 132’

Universally adored by numerous leading cinema critics, this intensely languorous seduction is set in 1983, somewhere in Northern Italy, in a ripe, sun-dappled palazzo belonging to a casually multi-lingual American professor of antiquities, his wife and smart, intuitive, intellectually precocious 17 year-old son, Elio. When 24 year-old graduate student Oliver arrives for a six-week internship, young Elio collapses into love. Beautiful, supremely touching performances give this ravishing and sensual film a moving purity. Wedi ei edmygu gan nifer o feirniaid sinema arweiniol, mae’r ffilm hon wedi ei gosod ym 1983 mewn palazzo heulog rhywle yng Ngogledd yr Eidal sy’n eiddo i athro amlieithog Americanaidd, ei wraig a’u mab clyfar tu hwnt, Elio sy’n 17 oed. Pan mae’r graddedig Oliver yn cyrraedd am gyfnod profiad gwaith chwe wythnos, mae Elio’n syrthio mewn cariad ag ef. Mae perfformiadau hyfryd a theimladwy yn rhoi purdeb trawiadol i’r ffilm gyfareddol a nwydus hon.

JOURNEY’S END (tbc) Saul Dibb | 2018 | UK | 106’ Sam Claflin, Asa Butterfield, and Paul Bettany star in this tense drama about a group of British soldiers during the First World War, in this new adaptation of R.C. Sherriff’s classic play. Waiting is the name of the game in the trenches at Mont Saint-Quentin, where, over a few days, a group of exhausted and resigned infantry officers and enlisted men try to keep their heads down before an inevitable major German offensive. Journey’s End concentrates on these citizen soldiers and the incredible stress they are subject to. Action, when it comes, is quick and brutal, but director Dibb fixes his eye firmly on the intricate psychology that ties this group of men together. A timely reminder of the true cost of a terrible conflict. ˆp o filwyr Prydeinig yn ystod y Rhyfel Mae’r ddrama annifyr hon am grw Byd Cyntaf, yn addasiad newydd ar ddrama glasurol R.C. Sherriff. Mae’r dynion blinedig yn y ffosydd wrthi’n aros am rai dyddiau cyn yr ymosodiad anochel ar y gelyn. Mae Journey’s End yn canolbwyntio ar y milwyr cyffredin hynny, a’r straen anferthol sydd arnynt. Mae’r ymladd, pan ddaw, yn gyflym ac yn greulon, ond gosoda’r cyfarwyddwr Dibb ei ffocws ar y seicoleg ddyrys sy’n clymu’r dynion hyn ynghyd. Ffilm sy’n ein hatgoffa’n amserol am wir gost gwrthdaro ofnadwy.

HAPPY END (15) Michael Haneke | 2017 | France | Austria | 108’

Isabelle Huppert stars in what is both an austere and darkly comic family drama, and a scathing commentary about the kind of world our children are living in. Either way, Happy End is stunning cinema, a satirical nightmare of haute-bourgeois European prosperity, a family drama set in Calais with the European refugee crisis for a backdrop. For the often-challenging Michael Haneke, it’s familiar themes pursued with the same dazzling inspiration as ever. It is also as gripping as a satanically inspired soap opera, a dynasty of lost souls; family dysfunction, intergenerational revenge, the poisonous suppression of guilt and the return of the repressed are all here.

Isabelle Huppert sy’n serennu yn yr hyn sy’n ddrama gomig deuluol a sylwebaeth ddeifiol am y math o fyd mae ein plant yn byw ynddo. Naill ffordd neu’r llall, mae Happy End yn ffilm syfrdanol, yn hunllef ddychanol o lewyrch haute-bourgeois Ewropeaidd, ac yn ddrama deuluol wedi ei gosod yn Calais gyda’r argyfwng ffoaduriaid Ewropeaidd fel cefndir. Mae ynddi themâu cyfarwydd, ac mae mor afaelgar ag unrhyw opera sebon. SUBTITLES | IS-DEITLAU

Sweeping vistas, the arresting sounds of a classical orchestra and Dafoe’s voice guide us through a journey into spectacle, history and our need to conquer them, from exploration and map-making through to extreme sports and death-defying feats. An extraordinary performance by Zhao Tao is the beating heart of this ambitious, time-jumping, continent-straddling drama, a state-of-China epic which begins with a cannon-blast of Pet Shop Boys that echoes its characters’ onward-striding quest for self-determination and social advancement. These are citizens who just want to Go West – if not geographically then cognitively. Zhao is the film’s racing heart, and gives a performance of extraordinary detail and depth of feeling in three time periods: ravishing as a young woman and anxious as a mother before a bittersweet and beautiful finale. Wonderful film-making. Perfformiad rhyfeddol gan Zhao Tao sydd wrth wraidd y ddrama uchelgeisiol hon sy’n neidio amser a chyfandir.
