TESTIMONIAL: “Wow! I am very happy with the results I am experiencing with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Treatment to date has far exceeded my expectations. I have searched for help for over 16 years, but the pharmaceutical solutions I received fell short. With the help of Dr. Pages, TMS and his wonderful staff, I have significantly reduced or eliminated many prescription drugs with very few symptoms remaining.”

TIRED OF TALKING ABOUT THE PROBLEM? TIME TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. TIME TO LET DR. KENNETH PAGES HELP.

I

f you’ve spent years cycling through antidepressants, mood stabilizers and various therapies because they simply don’t produce long-lasting relief from your severe depression, Dr. Kenneth Pages may be able to help you break the cycle once and for all. As many patients have come to realize, traditional antidepressant treatments can take weeks or months to work and don’t guarantee lasting effects. In a desperate search for relief, some are even turning to treatments that aren’t FDA-approved. If you’ve tried both traditional treatments like medications, cognitive behavioral therapy or ECT and alternative treatments like ketamine (not FDA approved), it may be time to try a groundbreaking new treatment. Neurostar’s Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an FDAcleared treatment that is scientifically proven to yield lasting relief from depression. It works by stimulating key areas of the brain that are under-active in patients with depression through precisely targeted magnetic pulses. Dr. Kenneth Pages is one of the few doctors in the Tampa Bay area performing this exciting and proven treatment, which takes less than 5 hours a week over a period of 4-6 weeks to achieve lasting improvement. It’s not magic. It’s a groundbreaking treatment that’s grounded in medicine, innovation and years of research. Dr. Pages’ results are astounding, with 60 percent of patients experiencing positive results and 40 percent achieving complete remission from depression. “When my patients first come here, they feel helpless, hopeless and lost,” says Dr. Pages. “Those who experience positive results with TMS have a renewed sense of hope and can picture a brighter future.”

GROOMING

Face Off. Beard On. Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jason Garrison on beards, superstitions and personal grooming.

Written By Derek Herscovici | Interview By Shawna Wiggs | Photography By Gabriel Burgos

Known almost as much for his big hits and booming slapshot as his thick, year-round beard, Jason Garrison is sort of an expert on facial grooming. TAMPA Magazine sat down with No. 5 to get to the root of all that hair.

probably won’t shave, but I don’t think it’s going to make you win or lose. Personally, I’m very superstitious. I won’t shave in the playoffs. I let it go. TM: What are some beards you admire, either in or out of hockey? JG: There are a couple guys who have grown their beards for a couple years now out in San Jose. Brent Burns and Joe Thornton, they have some nasty facial hair on that team.

TM: Most hockey players usually save the beard for the end of the season when the playoffs start, but not you. Why? JG: I think shaving regularly can become a little high maintenance, so if I feel like I don’t have the time to do it, I just let it go. I usually shave at the start [of the season] when we do our team pictures and then about every month and a half knock it down to the wood, then go again.

TM: Tell us about the products you use. JG: You always want to have a clean face, so face wash makes your beard feel a little softer, less itchy. It’s the same with shampoo. The products change as the beard does. When it’s longer I’ll use regular hair shampoo and comb it, really scrub it in there. When I’m out of the shower and it’s a month or two in, I’ll comb it, just to give it a professional look. I’ll blow dry it because water gets captured in there, and as soon as you bend down it drips. It’s good for your face, too, I’m sure.

TM: It’s traditionally bad luck to shave, trim or manicure your beard before winning the Stanley Cup – agree or disagree? JG: I personally won’t shave, but I know some guys that do. They’ll shave regularly or after a series or a game, and they’ll just maintain what they’re doing all year long. I know a guy who, when we were up 3-0 in a series, shaved, and we lost the next three games in a best of seven series. It’s tied 3-3, and he shaves half his face—only half his face—and we won. A lot of guys are superstitious so they

TM: What, in your own words, is the key to a great playoff beard? JG: I think the best playoff beards are the ones that don’t look like they’ve been touched. You just let it go. And rock it.

BREAK THE ICE In a studio kept at 17 degrees Fahrenheit, artist Collin Atkins turns blocks of ice into works of art. Written By Marcy Sanford | Photography By Gabriel Burgos

C

ollin Atkins was working a temporary job cutting down trees when he decided to try to carve a face on a tree stump. His wooden visage caught the eye of an ice sculptor who asked Atkins to visit his shop. “I thought he was just going to show me the sculptures he was working on, but he handed me a drawing on a cocktail napkin and told me to carve and deliver the sculpture because he was going out of town,” Atkins said. “It ended up being a smaller heart than planned because I kept carving it down to make it symmetrical.” Six years and thousands of blocks of ice later, Atkins has created frozen octopuses,

glacial genie lamps, arctic elephants and other icy icons for special events, parties and tradeshows. His most recent work is a 6-foot-tall polar bear for Icebar Orlando. Dressed in insulated pants, gloves and a winter hat, Atkins uses chainsaws, die grinders, ice picks, handsaws and even an iron to get every detail just right. “One of my favorite quotes I’ve heard about carving ice is, ‘Carving ice is easy. If you want to carve a swan, you just remove the pieces of ice that don’t look like a swan,’” Atkins said. “Each sculpture that I do is better than the last one, and I’m always thinking about ways to improve.”

Chris Santelli believes there’s a story behind what we wear — and for that matter, how we wear it. The fabrics, colors, textures and patterns we gravitate toward. The way we assemble tops, bottoms, handbags and shoes to create a look that’s uniquely us. All of these things are more than just “things to wear.” For Santelli, owner of Style Me New, a style concierge service, they’re an expression of our personal style, a direct connection to who we are and how we live. So when she and her husband relocated from San Francisco to Tampa Bay last April, she knew she wanted her new closet space to be much more than an afterthought. “When I go into my closet, I want to shop it,” she says. With the help of California Closets, Santelli transformed her 18 DEC JAN 2017

typical walk-in closet into a boutique-style space with crisp white shelving, glass cabinets and plenty of strategic lighting to highlight her extensive shoe and handbag collection. From start to finish the project took about two months to complete, however actual installation only lasted two days. “It was really important for me to use great materials,” she said. The base material was imported from Italy, using textile patterns Linen and Corsican Weave, while vanity drawers have decorative Italian glass inserts in Old Silver. The entire space measures 37 square feet with ten-foot ceilings. But her favorite part? “My vanity area, which is almost like a desk,” says Chris. “I can go in there and do my work and makeup all in one area, and my son (Grant) can sit there with me and doodle. It’s nice and cozy.”

HEALTH

Healthy Appetite Expert Guidance On Choosing A Diet Plan We live in a complex world where anything can be personalized—especially dieting. While nothing burns fat and builds muscle like ol’ fashioned exercise, supplementing your workout with body-boosting natural foods and vitamins can elevate your results. TAMPA Magazine asked Dr. Michael Heim, a part-time triathlete, and nutritionist/football player Cody Durakovic how to start, pick and stick with a new diet. Written By Derek Herscovici | Photography By Gabriel Burgos

PALEO DIETING

VEGAN DIET

Fruits and veggies, lean meats, seafood and nuts—the hunter-gatherer diets of our Paleolithic ancestors may seem extreme, but the results speak for themselves. Balanced energy, constant fat burn and improved sleep patterns are all benefits of cutting out processed or pre-cooked foods, but moderation is key—cutting too much too quickly makes your diet exhausting and inconsistent.

Deciding to do away with all animal-derived foods is admirable, but rushing into it without proper supplements can be an extreme your body isn’t prepared for.

CD Going from one extreme to another by consuming nutrients daily and then cutting them out completely results in a rebound or inconsistency. Supplements fill in the dietary voids that occur while following the paleo diet.

PROBIOTIC “GUT HEALTH” DIET Over 90 percent of the immune system is located in your gut, meaning what you put in the tank affects your chances of catching a cold, how well your body processes nutrients and a whole lot more. Gluten, dairy and corn have been proven to cause inflammation in the stomach by interfering with digestion and absorption—swap them for something better. MH The first step in improving gut health is to remove the things that cause inflammation and interfere with digestion and absorption, then add targeted nutrients to repair the gut and restore proper function. The bottom line is, if your gut is not healthy, the body is not healthy. 20 DEC JAN 2017

CD Vitamins, minerals and micronutrients should be taken daily in order to improve immunity, decrease inflammation in the body and to maintain good health, whether you are exercising seven days a week or not at all.

DETOX / JUICE DIETING There’s a big difference between juice “dieting” and juice “fasting”—committing to a liquidonly diet is at best extreme and, at its worst, potentially dangerous for your health. Juice cleanses, detox diets and other liquid quickfixes may help you lose weight, but without replenishing the nutrients you’re cutting out, you risk exhaustion or binge-eating to make up for it. Use as a supplement only! MH Our bodies aren’t meant to take in concentrated liquid calories, which is exactly what happens when you remove only juice from foods. Blood work from patients that are only juicing shows elevated blood sugar—maybe the biggest contributor to everything that we die of in this country, including heart disease and cancer. There is no substitute for eating whole foods.

Dr. Michael Heim opened the Center for Health and Age Management in 2009 after years of practicing bariatric, osteopathic and family medicine. A lifelong triathlete whose competed in over 70 events, Heim has extensive knowledge of sports nutrition and regenerative medicine.

DIGESTIVE CARE CENTER I

ssues with digestion are not only crippling, they can also be embarrassing and affect your daily quality of life. The world-renowned physicians at the Digestive Care Center are specially trained to diagnose and treat simple to complex digestive health disorders.

TO SEE SOMEONE GET THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE BACK, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY THOUGHT IT WAS LOST FOR GOOD, IS QUITE SPECIAL.

Dr. Harris became fascinated with the GI system while in medical school. Trained in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, he is an expert at helping patients who are suffering from conditions such as Crohn’s disease, liver cancers and other debilitating digestive issues. He says that the best part of his job is helping people who thought they would have to live with a digestive health problem for the rest of their lives get better. “To see someone get their quality of life back, especially when they thought it was lost for good, is quite special.” Dr. Saloum specializes in general Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. The disorders he treats include, but are not limited to, acid reflux

Every day they see patients with a wide range of digestive issues – everything from acid reflux to pancreatobilliary disorders to gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.

(GERD), inflammatory bowel disease, autoimmune and viral hepatitis. In his late teens, Dr. Saloum used to visit patients in the hospital with his brothers who were training to become a surgeon, an oncologist and a radiologist. He became fascinated not only with the human body at large, but mostly with the human spirit in health and sickness. He has held teaching faculty appointments at universities and believes that the best patient is an educated one, so he is very passionate about explaining disease process and necessary testing. Also trained in advanced therapeutic endoscopy, Dr. Sanjeevi works passionately to help patients with complex GI conditions, such as pancreaticobiliary disorders, GI oncology, GI dysmotility and small bowel pathology. She has established an evaluation platform that effectively diagnoses swallowing and reflux disorders. She believes in empowering patients with knowledge of their disease and treatment options. She also has held teaching faculty appointments at universities. “I consider myself to be their advocate in helping to make informed decisions. My biggest reward is the gratitude of my patients and their families. The ability to impact lives is a gift not to be taken lightly.”

2017 annual Top Docs Edition 

WHO DECIDES WHO IS A TOP DOCTOR? Who Picks the Doctors? In September, we mailed over 9,000 surveys to physicians in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. We obtained the list of physicians from the Florida Department of Health; including M.D.s (medical doctors), D.O.s (osteopathic doctors) and podiatrists. We asked the physicians to nominate their peers—who in their judgement are the best— in 52 separate medical specialties, then return the surveys in anonymous prepaid return envelopes. We then tallied the votes from those surveys to compile this list. Does TAMPA Magazine check out all of the doctors nominated? Yes. After the list is compiled, we verify that the doctor is not on probation or had their license revoked. Was my doctor left off the list because he or she does not advertise in TAMPA Magazine? Absolutely not. Any doctor on the list and also advertising is purely coincidental.

Mint Condition Mint has a long and storied history as a useful and delicious herb. A sign of hospitality, mint was planted by many early settlers at the entrance of their homes, and folklore says that if you rub a purse with mint leaves, they will bring good luck and prosperity. The Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used mint for flavoring foods, cleaning the home and curing ailments. Today there are dozens of different varieties of mint plants in cultivation, all with their own unique taste and scent. A few of the most common ones include peppermint and spearmint but you can also find apple mint, chocolate mint and ginger mint, depending on your taste and culinary desires. Mint is easy to grow and will quickly spread, so consider planting it in a pot or inside a bottomless bucket in the ground. You can add the versatile herb to sauces, vinegars, vegetables, salads, drinks or desserts – the possibilities are endless.

Chicken Biryani with Mint and Cilantro Asmita Kakodker began cooking in 2002 as a way to bring the tastes of her home in India to her new home in the U.S. Soon, thanks to Food TV, cooking was an obsession. She now loves cooking recipes from all over the world and writing about her cooking experiences, new recipes and family favorites on her blog, Compulsive Foodie. Biryani is a traditional Indian dish. The rice and meat are cooked separately and then layered and baked together so that the various spices in the dish blend together to fully flavor every delicious bite.

O A FLORIDA NATIVE, BEING CALLED A “CRACKER” IS A COMPLIMENT. It recalls the grit and tenacity of laboring cowboys who came generations before them, from which the nickname is derived. Many associate the cowboy with the “Wild West,” but few know that these bullwhip-toting ancestors shaped the landscape, history and economy that make Florida what it is today – and we’re proud to share the story of the term’s roots. Spain’s attempts to colonize the interior of Florida were abandoned by the early 1700s. Spanish colonists retreated to the fortress towns of St. Augustine and Pensacola or departed for their Caribbean holdings in Cuba and Hispaniola (the island now made up of the Dominican Republic and Haiti), leaving behind massive herds of Andalusian cattle, an ancestor of today’s modern Texas longhorn. Prized for the hardiness and resistance to parasites the breed had developed living in Florida, these cattle were turned loose or escaped their enclosures, w

2 1 Cattle rustlers guided cattle out of the underbrush of Central Florida’s forests before embarking on the Florida Cracker Trail. 2 The cowboys’ incredible knack for “cracking” their whips faster than the speed of sound gave them their name.

1 multiplying and spreading across North America in record numbers. The cattle drove Florida’s economy for much of the 19th century and helped create today’s state economy. Without these cattle, the cracker cowboy, the most mythic of the Florida frontiersmen, would not have existed. Their descendants, the cowboys who moved out west, might not have either. Battles fought between indigenous Native Americans and the Spanish and English settlers in Florida were fueled to no small degree by the various cattle rustlers on both sides who sought to control the large, wild herds of the interior and the land they grazed on. Ahaya, “the Cowkeeper” and the first chief of the Alachua band of the Seminole tribe, took territorial control of modern-day Paynes Prairie and an abandoned Spanish cattle ranch in the early 1700s, quickly amassing enough wild cows to earn his namesake. The village he and his people established before his death in 1784, Cuscowilla, later became the first established American town in the Florida territory under its current name, Micanopy. Rather than import or drive more cattle into Florida,

the two sides instead warred over the existing population until the settlers were able to displace the natives. The second generation to settle in the Florida territory after the Spanish were pioneers who traveled south through the state in the period between the American Revolution and the Civil War. Control of Florida was still disputed by Spain and England, so settlers in the state lived outside the political control of both nations. Cattle rustlers, charged with rounding up the loose cattle in Central Florida, used long, braided leather bullwhips to bring cattle out from the underdeveloped forest brush. The men would flail the whips with so much force that the tips would actually break the sound barrier, creating a cracking sound – actually a small sonic boom. Thus, a name for these Florida cowboys was born. Stories quickly spread about the rustlers’ individual whipcracking sounds that allowed them to identify each other from far away. The cracker cowboys rode short horses called “cracker ponies” across the Florida Cracker Trail from Fort Pierce to Bradenton. This trail across Central Florida was blazed out of necessity more than anything

3 else. Moist land surrounding the Kissimmee River prevented travel to the north, while the sizable Lake Okeechobee and the Everglades swamps meant the crackers could not cross to the south either. Every year the crackers would convene on the more populous east coast and stock up for the long 120-mile journey across the trail to the Gulf of Mexico, where the cattle would be shipped to Cuba. To maximize profits, they had to deliver the cattle to shipping ports during peak market season in late July and August, when the weather was at its worst. Florida’s unpredictable weather, from never-ending downpours to oppressive heat, was just one challenge the cracker cowboys faced on the trail. They also had to take care to avoid dangerous panthers, bears and wolves and hostile native tribes with nothing but small packs of herd dogs for protection. Upon arriving safely in Fort Pierce, the crackers often stopped at P.P. Cobb’s General Store (100 Ave. A, Fort Pierce). The oldest commercial establishment in St. Lucie County, the store opened in 1882 as a trading post between Seminole tribes, planters, crackers and sailors. You can still see the giant blackboard ledger behind the counter where crackers’ names were written when they bought supplies on credit, debts occasionally repaid with Spanish gold after the long drive.

54 DEC JAN 2017

During the Civil War, cracker-supplied cattle were the Confederate Army’s chief source of meat, leather and hides, particularly after Union ships blockaded southern ports. Forced to drive the animals by land into Georgia, the “Cow Cavalry” faced harsh conditions and the occasional skirmish with Union forces along the way, prompting some to turn sides and sell their cattle to the Union-controlled port of Fort Myers. When the war was over, Judge Ziba King, a former Confederate officer, became the greatest “cattle baron” in Florida history. He owned more than 50,000 cows – a tenth of Florida’s total cattle population – worth a half million dollars at the time of his death in 1901 (over 13 million in 2016 dollars). While King’s success could be linked to the cattle trade with Spanish Cuba, much of the everyday work was carried out by journeymen cattle rustlers – none more famous than King’s prized rancher, Morgan Bonaparte “Bone” Mizell. Born in present-day DeSoto County, Mizell was known far and wide as much for his drinking and mischief as his knowledge of cattle brands. Rumor had it he could recognize hundreds of different brands. As barbed-wire cattle farms started to offer more consistent beef, the roaming Florida cracker personified by Mizell faded into history, but

5 their stories and the culture they embodied can still be felt here in Central Florida. In 2000, the White House Millennium Council selected the Florida Cracker Trail as a “Millennium Trail,” recognizing both its historical and cultural importance to the state and the nation. The trail’s western terminus is now Manatee Village Historical Park. Road trippers can still visit the Desert Inn and Restaurant in Yeehaw Junction, which was built in 1885 as a saloon for weary crackers and travelers, with a brothel on the second floor. After extensive renovations, the Desert Inn now offers classic Florida country dishes and lodging. For a true taste of the cracker life, nothing beats the Great Florida Cattle Drive Reunion, an annual convention and cattle herding expedition from January 27-29, 2017 at the Florida Agricultural Museum in Palm Coast.

A SURGERY ON THE STOMACH. “I chose to go see an abdominal surgery during my school’s career day and loved watching the procedure and teamwork in the operating room,” he says. “I found that it was fascinating. I became intrigued with procedural medicine.” Now, as one of the Tampa Bay-area’s top cosmetic physicians, Dr. Besnoff no longer performs major surgeries, but his office now performs 35 to 55 office patient procedures per day. In fact, he has performed more BOTOX® / Dysport® treatments in Tampa Bay than any other provider. “I chose this line of medicine because of my ability to work well with my hands during medical procedures and my desire to make patients feel happy about themselves,” he says. Dr. Besnoff was recently certified to perform PDO Threading procedures, which allows the patient to receive a non-surgical facelift within 30 minutes! He is also certified to administer Kybella® injections, which dissolve the fat under the chin. He also uses ThermiTight™, which administers radiofrequency to give a neck lift that’s better than lipsuction. Additionally, Dr. Besnoff’s team has the proper non-invasive treatment for bags under the eyes (PRP, Thermi™ or Fraxel®). “The PRP treatment for bags and circles under the eyes has been widely successful in prolonging the need for under-eye surgery,” he stated. “Plus, this treatment makes the patient appear five to ten years younger.” Dr. Besnoff also offers BOTOX® / Dysport®, dermal fillers, and weight loss procedures such as THERMI™ liposuction, Verjú™ and Liposonix®. “The most rewarding part of the day is when a patient can view his or her before-andafter pictures and see the improvement our treatment had on his or her beauty,” he says. “Even more rewarding, as a physician, is knowing that I am making a positive difference in the lives of my patients.” Dr. Besnoff’s primary office is located in Clearwater just south of Curlew Road on U.S. Highway 19. While receptive to all areas of medicine, Dr. Befeler was drawn to the complexity and continuing evolution of neurosurgery, today specializing in disorders of the spine and peripheral nerves in addition to general neurosurgery. When meeting a patient for the first time, Dr. Befeler takes into account the whole person and how they personally experience their symptoms before explaining their medical issue and developing a plan that fits their lifestyle.

RONALD G. HAYTER, MD ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON WHEN SUFFERING FROM EVEN MINOR ARTHRITIS, EVERYDAY TASKS LIKE WALKING AND STANDING UP CAN FEEL LIKE HURDLES TO OVERCOME, LEAVING PATIENTS WITH FEW OPTIONS FOR A BETTER LIFE. Dr. Ronald G. Hayter knows the difficulty and confusion arthritis creates and understands that treating a patient’s motivation can be as important as their joints. “Part of my job is reassuring them that they can get better,” Dr. Hayter said. “They can go back to living a relatively normal life, but one of the most important factors in their recovery is their motivation to get better, their desire to recover.” A joint replacement specialist, Dr. Hayter has been treating all types of arthritis problems at the Florida Orthopedic & Knee Pavilion since 1990 on his own. At the Largo Medical Center Dr. Hayter performs complex surgical procedures like hip replacements, knee resurfacing, knee and shoulder arthroscopy as well as treating conditions like osteoarthritis, tendinitis and degenerative joint diseases. “Earlier this morning a patient came in for her first postoperative visit and she was walking without support, whereas before surgery she could barely walk with a walker,” Dr. Hayter said. “It’s only been three weeks! She’s already walking with no support at all.” Dr Hayter has helped thousands of people like this patient with arthritis get back to enjoying their life. If you or someone you love is experiencing joint pain, you owe it to yourself to come see Dr Hayter to see how he can help you, too. Born in Houston but raised in a small West Texas town called San Angelo, Dr. Hayter loves talking to people almost as much as he does helping them and understands that there’s more to a patient than just their injury. When he’s not helping patients or spending time with family, Dr. Hayter enjoys racing open-wheel Formula cars and go-carts at the nearby track. GEOFFREY M. KWITKO, M.D. F.A.C.S. OCULOPLASTIC SURGERY AND NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY DR. GEOFFREY KWITKO HAD A VISION FOR HIS LIFE LONG BEFORE HE BECAME ONE OF TAMPA’S MOST DISTINGUISHED OCULOPLASTIC SURGEONS. Growing up, he watched his father revolutionize the ophthalmology world by being the first doctor in Canada to insert intraocular lens implants during cataract surgery. It’s a distinction that, among many others, helped cement his reputation as a pioneer in the field—he was even knighted shortly before he passed away in 2002. As a teenager working in his father’s practice, Geoffrey always knew that, like his father, he wanted to carve his own unique path in ophthalmologic history. “I always wanted to be an eye doctor,” Dr. Kwitko says, “but I didn’t know I would specialize in oculoplastics until I met a professor during my residency.” After his residency, he practiced in Montreal for a year. He became frustrated with the sluggish health care system. “I remember this 80-year-old woman who had an infected tear sac,” he recalls. “It would have taken me 20 minutes to fix, but we couldn’t get her into an OR for six months.” He decided then and there that he couldn’t practice in an environment that allowed patients to suffer. He set his sights on Tampa, a city, that at the time, had only one other oculoplastic surgeon. Now, more than 25 years later, the Harbour Island resident has established himself as one of the world’s most renowned experts on cosmetic eyelid surgery. Dr. Kwitko specializes in neuro ophthalmology, thyroid eye disease, orbital diseases, orbital cancers, tearing problems and dry eye syndrome. “I enjoy the cosmetic part and doing trauma and cancer reconstruction is very rewarding,” he says. When he’s not in surgery, Dr. Kwitko unwinds by hitting the hockey rink. Some of his patients might be surprised to discover that once upon a time, Dr. Kwitko was a world-class mogul skier. “It was either keep skiing or get a real job,” Dr. Kwitko jokes. “Many patients have expressed concern to me about how little time their doctors spend with them. Looking at the patient as a person and not just focusing on a painful heel or Achilles tendon is so very important. I consider all factors that might cause a state of chronic inflammation—diet, exercise, sleep patterns and stress levels.” Able to offer the versatility of traditional medicine or evidence-based holistic/alternative medicine (or any combination thereof) is a huge advantage that the majority of foot and ankle specialists do not offer. Dr. Aiken specializes in heel and nerve pain in the foot and has treated thousands of patients over his 26-year career.

A recognized expert in imaging and biomechanics of the female pelvic organs, he is also one of the leading robotic prolapse surgeons in the world. “Because I specialize in advanced robotic and vaginal surgery and have knowledge of a wide range of surgical and nonsurgical therapies, I am able to customize treatment for each of my patients. I start by carefully listening to each woman’s complaints, followed by a thorough examination and evaluation of the problem. I then discuss the diagnosis and treatment options in detail with them. I want each patient to understand her diagnosis, how we are going to fix it, and feel comfortable asking questions.”

MICHAEL MISHKIN, D.O. CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

ANGELA TURNER, D.O. FACC CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

DR. MICHAEL MISHKIN, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT USF HEALTH’S MORSANI COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF CARDIOLOGY, LIKES TO KEEP THINGS SIMPLE. IN FACT, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HE’S GOING TO DO WITH HIS BEDSIDE MANNER WHEN SEEING PATIENTS. “It’s very unsettling when you are ill and do not understand what is going on,” he says. “There is a lot of ‘jargon’ in the medical field, and I enjoy simplifying to patients how we are going to help them feel better.”

SOME OF DR. TURNER’S FIRST MEMORIES ARE RELATED TO MEDICINE. “My mother told me I said I wanted to be a doctor when I was 5 years old,” she says. “I can remember it being my goal from a very early age and trying to do anything possible to get experience in medicine, from volunteering at a local hospital to shadowing my own primary care physician.”

Dr. Mishkin spends most of his time seeing and talking to patients. As a “non-invasive” cardiologist, he won’t be performing surgery on patients. Instead, he’ll be using stress tests to look for coronary artery disease. He also performs and interprets echocardiograms, which is a technique that uses ultrasounds to take pictures of the heart. “It is really quite remarkable how much we can learn about your heart just from a simple sound wave,” Mishkin adds. Dr. Mishkin says the cardiological technology utilized is improving fast and that he loves problem solving to give the best of his medical services to his patients. “ “I consider myself very lucky that I get to help people on a daily basis,” he says.

Certification & Education Nova Southeastern University; University of South Florida; Board Certified in Cardiology and Echocardiography

Dr. Turner’s fascination with medicine and passion for helping people has made her an expert in cardiology. She specializes in diagnosing, managing and treating heart conditions and is excited about researching how genetics can pinpoint who will be at risk for heart disease, which enables doctors to tailor early preventative care. “The most important thing to me is to take the time to listen to my patient and then come up with a plan together that will help determine what the issue is and how to treat it,” she says. “I like to take the time to counsel on healthy lifestyle choices and have a special interest in prevention and women’s health.” Even outside the office she spends her time taking care of others as an active volunteer with the Junior League and other local organizations, on medical mission trips to Africa, and, along with her husband, caring for rescue dogs and cats. JAMES A. WESTERVELT, M.D., F.A.C.S. GENERAL SURGEON

J. RYAN WILLIAMS, M.D. COLON & RECTAL SURGERY

“THE FIRST TIME I OBSERVED AN OPERATION, I KNEW I HAD FOUND MY CALLING,” DR. WESTERVELT SAYS. “I’d always known I wanted to work with people and help them but was unsure of the exact professions I wanted to enter. After seeing that operation, I couldn’t imagine any other profession that would allow me to work with people so intimately and make such a positive impact on their lives.”

DR. J. RYAN WILLIAMS, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT USF HEALTH’S MORSANI COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FOR THE DIVISION OF COLON AND RECTAL SURGERY, WAS ON THE PATH TO BE AN ADMINISTRATOR. THEN HE MET A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH LEUKEMIA, AND THAT BOY TAUGHT DR. WILLIAMS ABOUT STRENGTH AND OVERCOMING ADVERSITY. “I decided I didn’t want to be an administrator any longer,” he says. “I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my physician father and spend my time and energy helping people who are sick.”

As a general surgeon, Dr. Westervelt treats many different ailments including: cancers involving the breasts, intestinal tract, and skin; abdominal wall hernias; gallbladder disease; GERD; intestinal obstructions; hemorrhoids and perianal disease; and common skin/soft tissue lesions. He is an expert in minimally invasive/laparoscopic and robotic surgery. “I am particularly interested in this type of surgery because it continues to expand and develop and provides improved outcomes and faster recoveries for patients while being less expensive than traditional surgery,” he says. Dr. Westervelt believes it is important to treat patients with respect, honesty, and compassion. “The ‘Golden Rule’ prevails,” he explained. “I enjoy being a good listener and educating patients about their condition.” When he is not saving lives, Dr. Westervelt enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking, watching college sports and movies, and participating in water sports including skiing, knee boarding, and kite boarding.

Certification & Education SUNY Health Science Center; Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, University of Louisville; Board Certified in General Surgery

During his surgical training, Dr. Williams found he enjoyed colon and rectal surgery and decided that he wanted to be the specialist to whom other physicians sent their patients. Daily, he sees multiple patients with symptoms ranging from hemorrhoidal disease to pelvic pain, as well as others who have recently been diagnosed with colon, rectal or anal cancer. Some of these patients can be treated with medical therapy while others will require outpatient surgical procedures. “When it comes to cancer, you can imagine it is a lot more involved,” he adds. “I work with other doctors to create care plans for patients to best treat their cancer. It is very rewarding to treat someone’s cancer successfully.”

Dr. Williams lives with his wife, Erin, and his three children, Mackenzie, James and Kate. Certification & Education University of Louisville; University of South Florida; Board Certified in Colon and Rectal Surgery

Dr. Bidani is passionate about eradicating the obesity epidemic. His practice is the only one in Tampa to offer ReShape, a relatively easy non-surgical 20-minute procedure that he believes is the best option for people who need to lose weight. “This short outpatient balloon placement procedure is a great alternative to surgery. Patients do not have any scars and there are no permanent changes to the gastrointestinal tract.”

A routine eye exam can show so many things – some can be life saving. Dr. Powers was giving his mother a routine eye exam when he noticed something did not look right, “When I looked into her eyes, I saw some abnormalities,” he says. “Although my mother had no symptoms of diabetes, a thorough exam by an endocrinologist confirmed that she did. Because I was able to use modern technology coupled with preventative services, my mother is well today and is enjoying life.”

Dr. Bidani has had exceptional results with his patients who have had the ReShape procedure. In European studies patients lost 38 pounds. Weight loss can be maximized when patients use the FREE dietary and weight loss coaching program. Dr. Bidani’s patients are ecstatic to have lost weight easily and they love all the support from the online ReShape community, dietician, and coach. His goal is to provide patients with a comprehensive program to have permanent weight loss via ReShape.

Since that discovery, Dr. Powers has dedicated his practice to the treatment of diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataracts and dry eyes. “The goal of the Healthy Vision Institute is to prevent vision loss due to diabetes, macular degeneration and other age related vision diseases,” he says. “Thanks to our technology, knowledge and continuous training we are able to bring customized modern medicine to all our patients so they can enjoy ‘the gift of sight’ for as long as possible.”

I have been seeing Dr. Hassan in his office on Rt. 54. He has various offices, making it easy on the pocketbook when it comes to travel. His staff is professional and extremely friendly. Dr. Hassan is also very friendly and down-to-earth. He listens to everything you need to say without interruption or explanation before providing a clear and direct list of options. Dr. Hassan and his staff understand the hardship of pain and how it affects all aspects of your life. This is very comforting when you are in so much pain. I did not wait long to get an appointment. Once I had been seen, future appointments were made immediately so the problem could be dealt with quickly. I left their office after my second appointment with a new pep in my step. I had forgotten what it was like to not be in pain. I cannot express how helpful this doctor has been to me and my family.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE From local folks Restaurants, Bars and Things to Do

Off the beaten path with Jessica Thompson (32) Occupational Therapist, Tampa Kids Program Manager, Monsour Executive Wellness Center at USF Health Tampa resident for 14 years

Favorite spot for a girls’ night out: The girls enjoy going to Fly Bar & Restaurant downtown for great food and drinks along with live music and a relaxing atmosphere on the rooftop deck. Favorite local store: I’m a fan of Dark Cycle Clothing in Hyde Park Village. The company consists of a local husband and wife team that design, print and pack their own items including shirts, pillows, coffee mugs, hats and more. They are genuine and creative. Favorite waterfront restaurant: Ricks on the River has live music, casual food and a great view of Tampa’s Hillsborough River. Favorite place to sit with a cup of coffee and coffee drink of choice: Jet City Espresso is one of my favorite places to grab a specially made Café Borgia topped with orange zest. It’s an authentic coffee experience, and the owner Jessica is a pleasure to visit with. Favorite thing to do on the water: I recommend stand-up paddleboarding [at Urban Kai] near the Tampa Convention Center. Bring friends and family! Favorite park: I enjoy the Flatwoods Wilderness Park in New Tampa. It’s a great place to take your dog for a long walk or bike ride and is generally not too crowded. Favorite weekday breakfast spot: The Independent Bar and Cafe serves up a delicious breakfast that you can order to go or relax and enjoy for a few minutes. Favorite place for a power lunch: So Fresh is always my go-to for lunch. They offer a delicious and healthy solution for lunch on the run or visiting with friends and colleagues.

Off the beaten path with Grymes Cannon (41) National Sales Rep, Lacroux Streeb/LogIQ Supply 4th generation Tampa resident

Favorite date-night spot: Caffé Paradiso sitting at the bar with my girlfriend, Lauren. We don’t need a menu. For an appetizer, I get six to eight lightly breaded large Key West pink shrimp and cold calamari salad. We get two entrees – veal piccata with capers and baked sea bass accompanied by sautéed spinach. Chef/owner Paolo Tini sets the ideal ambiance. Favorite local boutique: The Store located inside The Station on South Howard. It’s owned by Abby Griffith, who has fabulous style and keeps her hand on the pulse of unique fashion. Favorite Mexican restaurant: Acapulco Mexican Grocery and Taqueria and Lolis Mexican Cravings are the only two authentic Mexican restaurants in Tampa. They are completely authentic tucked-away gems that prepare the freshest ingredients.

Favorite park: Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, especially the second weekend in March for the annual Gasparilla Music Festival. There is nothing like the two-day experience of listening to live music with the amazing skyline above and picturesque backdrop of UT minarets. Favorite Asian food: Ichicoro Ramen hands down! Noel Cruz returned to Tampa from New York City to create a unique cuisine which continues progressively moving Tampa’s foodie meter off the charts! Favorite Asian food: My family has been celebrating special occasions at the former Malio’s Steakhouse and now Malio’s Prime Steakhouse since I was born!

Favorite place to grab a drink downtown: Franklin Manor has a great staff and an atmosphere that offers a little bit of everything, both inside and out. Favorite place for a power lunch: Ciccio Water. They have great food, and I always seem to run into other business professionals I know at lunch. Favorite Mexican restaurant: O Cocina & Flights. It’s a newer restaurant with a great atmosphere and a fresh take on Mexican food. Favorite place for authentic cuisine: Columbia Restaurant is the place to get authentic Spanish food in Tampa, and they make the best mojito you’ll ever have. Favorite Asian food: I love Thai food, and I always end up at Joto Thai-Sushi in South Tampa. Favorite pizza: Eddie & Sam’s New York Pizza is the only place I eat pizza in Tampa! My favorite slices there are the Lasagna pizza and the Bianca. Favorite place for a craft cocktail and cocktail of choice: Jeremy at Cask & Ale in St. Pete is the best bartender I know, and he makes a perfect Maple Old Fashioned. Favorite place for a healthy meal: Fresh Kitchen is healthy, fast and affordable. Favorite beach spot: Jimmy B’s on St. Pete Beach is a great beach bar and restaurant. Favorite sports bar: Ducky’s has the best food of any sports bar in the area. Favorite place for a long walk: Whether you’re walking, biking or running, the best views in Tampa Bay are on Bayshore Boulevard Visit thetampamagazine.com/tampa-confidential for more local recommendations!
