EDITOR’S LETTER

MCKENNA KELLEY Managing Editor

This year’s Health, Beauty and Fitness Issue comes at a time when “self-care” has become a buzzword, and people are making their overall wellness a priority. To help, we called in some experts throughout the magazine to help you live a healthy lifestyle — however you define that. If you’re looking to meet your fitness goals, turn to page 28. The team at Driven Fit gave us the lowdown on how to create a home gym you’ll actually use, along with tips on making your workout routine stick, how hard to push yourself, and which scents are most motivating (hint: think citrus). For those looking to make the switch to all organic produce, Zach Grace, owner of Urban Roots Garden Supply, told us everything you need to know about building an organic garden right in your own backyard (page 38). He said late fall and winter are Florida’s best growing seasons, so there’s never been a better time to develop your green thumb. Once you have all your organic produce, put it to good use in a delicious pan-seared grouper recipe from South Tampa personal chef Jorge Marquez. Chef Marquez says this dish works for both an easy weeknight dinner and as a uniquely Floridian meal for your holiday guests. Don’t miss his expertise on page 45. Finally, as the time for giving thanks approaches, I want to say a huge thank you to every single reader of South Tampa Magazine. Your support for the magazine and passion for our community makes my job a truly enjoyable one. I wish you all a most wonderful and happy holiday season. Enjoy the issue!

The Seminole Heights-based Hey Giant! Little Biscuits recently opened a second location in Palma Ceia, serving up biscuits (buttermilk, cinnamon, cheddar chive and rosemary lavender) with a variety of sweet and savory toppings (think jam, ham, gravy and marshmallow fluff ). Hey Giant! co-owners Lee Valenti and Jesse Thompson say that had been looking for a second location to meet the demand at their original location, particularly on weekends. The former Vine Baking Co. building fit the bill. “We felt that it was a perfect spot that reflected our the charm and style of our original spot in Seminole Heights,” says Valenti. “Additionally, we knew we had a good number of customers from South Tampa and it would be great to bring our biscuits a little closer them.” In the evenings, Valenti and Thompson — former teachers — turn the Seminole Heights location into a learning center with homework help and creative workshops for local students. They’re keeping the learning center in Seminole Heights for now, but Valenti says plans are in the works for the new store. “We are already brainstorming ways to offer some small group academic and creativity sessions in our South Tampa biscuit shop after hours too,” she says.

One of the world’s most in-demand artists has come to Tampa. As part of the Tampa Museum of Art’s “Season of Love” series, “Love is Calling,” one of internationally renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s famous Infinity Rooms, will be on display until — appropriately — Valentine’s Day. “Kusama’s Infinity Rooms are completely immersive,” says Michael Tomor, executive director of the Tampa Museum of Art. “When you walk into the installation, you are immediately transported into an experience so completely different from the familiarity of your daily life that you can leave what occupies your world for a moment in time.” The piece is on loan from Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and his wife, Penny, through their Vinik Family Foundation. Public art is one of the pillars of the foundation, which sponsored Amalie Arena’s interactive Beach Tampa exhibit in 2016 and “The Art of the Brick” LEGO exhibit in 2017. Jeff Vinik says they have chosen these particular exhibits, including “Love is Calling,” for their appeal to all age groups. “Kids can enjoy them, adults can enjoy them, and they’ll all get different meanings out of it,” he added. “Love is Calling” (bottom left and right) is included with museum admission, but you must select a timed ticket to view the exhibit when you purchase admission. —McKenna Kelley

TAMPA CONFIDENTIAL ASK TH E INSID ER

Brooke Palmer Kuhl PRESIDENT, R.S.B.P. EVENTS + PR

Q A

Q: What is your favorite new restaurant in Tampa? A: Considering I eat out regularly, I have many favorites, but I recently went to Nebraska Mini-Mart. Chef Ferrell Alvarez is not only an exemplary chef and a really cool guy, but he made food fun! The onion rings and kimchi hot dog? Don’t miss those! Shuffleboard and bocce? I am in! Q: What is your favorite place in town for comfort food? A: I love barbecue. I think 4 Rivers does an amazing job of awesome ‘cue. John and his staff make the experience casual and delicious, and the options are amazing. Have you had their beans? So tasty. 26 NOV-DEC 2018 tampamagazines.com

Q: Where do you head for a business meal? A: That’s easy, and yes, I’m biased, but Bern’s Steak House [Ed. note: Palmer Kuhl is Bern’s PR director]. The experience is secondto-none. And you accomplish more in business over a meal, in my opinion. If only the walls at Bern’s could talk… Wow! Q: Where is your favorite place for a healthy meal? A: Fresh Kitchen, for sure. I get the sweet potato noodles with mushrooms, broccoli or Brussels and barbecue chicken, plus a little Parmesan and guacamole with the herb vinaigrette. Great meal, fast, fresh and healthy. Q: Since this is the Health, Beauty and Fitness Issue, where do you go to feel more healthy, beautiful or fit? A: I have three places. Orangetheory Fitness is my obsession. Yes. Like, true love. I love going to the gym. Who says that? But when your trainer plays “Pony” by Ginuwine every time you are on the rower, it cannot get any better for a workout. The music is great, and the workout is always different. Plus I burn 500-plus calories a class. It’s simply the best. I also love The Station. Abby Griffith and her team are incredible. This is a one-stop-shop for hair, color, lashes, facials and more. I hate to say it, but I’m there quite often because not only do they make me feel amazing, they are all dear friends. Finally, Blow Bar. Yes, I’m a junkie. But a blowout is like the best guilty pleasure. For as much as I’m on the go, the team there makes me feel pretty every time!

HOME WORKOUTS THAT WORK OUT PH OTO

By McKenna Kelley

We all know the story. You buy a treadmill or a stationary bike, maybe some dumbbells or a weight bench, and after a week of use they sit collecting dust until they get cleared out to make space for something else.

tampamagazines.com NOV-DEC 2018

29

To get some tips on how to create an effective, useful workout space at home, we talked with brother Luis and Marco Echeverry, certified personal trainers and co-owners of South Tampa’s Driven Fit, and their team members Kim Huynh and Dr. Sarah Sponaugle about what to do, what to avoid, and how to make your workout stick.

Pick multi-use pieces of equipment “At times, we all can look at things in a one-dimensional manner. For example, take the adjustable weight-lifting bench. The first thing that 30 NOV-DEC 2018 tampamagazines.com

may come to mind is that this machine is built only for chest exercises. Then a person feels they need multiple pieces to work each muscle group. However, if you give us trainers at Driven an adjustable bench, we will turn this into a tool that can work every muscle group.” Where to set up your home gym “If possible, try to find a place that allows for natural light to come in. There is always the thought of using a garage for your gym space. My recommendation is to let your wellness space serve

as that alone. Over and over again, I’ve seen equipment pieces like elliptical machines share space with other rooms in the household, and they easily become coat hangers. Also, having your workout space being shared with a car means moving your car to work out. As easy as it sounds, it may turn into a deterrent.” Space requirements “Measure your space entirely, and factor in the space needed when exercise is being conducted with and without machines to include walk-through

Before you start setting up your home gym “Have a plan in mind and know what your goals are,” says Luis Echeverry, owner of Driven Fit. “Create a program that works for you. There are many ways to get started, whether it’s with a trainer or by educating yourself on exercise. No matter what, we always recommend taking into consideration your own limitations. At a minimum, get yourself an assessment with an exercise professional, and if you have any health risks or preexisting issues, check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.”

space and space to remove weights. Also, discovering the best type of flooring to use is a must to deaden the sound for the rest of the space or home. An example would be to purchase a deadlift platform to avoid damaging the floor and at

What to do about cardio if you don’t have a large space “There are plenty of full body movements that can be done without machines. There are space-saving cardio machines that may work for your goals or needs, like the TrueForm Runner, rowing machine, a cycling bike like a Keiser or Peloton, or a Keiser Total Body Trainer, which operates like a fan bike. W OTS HOW TO GROW AN ORGANIC GARDEN RIGHT IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD

PH OTO

By Molly Urnek

We’ve read the headlines about recalled produce tainted with salmonella, the unethical labor issues, the malicious chemicals and questionable GMOs. We’ve wondered where the food on our plate comes from and whose hands it has passed through. We’ve questioned what we are putting in our bodies and found no answers. But there is one solution: grow your own food. We talked to Zach Grace, owner of Tampa’s Urban Roots Garden Supply, about how to start your own organic garden. He explained that it’s simple and doable, even for those with self-proclaimed black thumbs. Follow these tips and you’ll be surrounded by fresh greens before you know it.

KNOW WHAT YOU WANT FROM YOUR GARDEN Before you start, know your expectations, Grace says. What are you trying to get out of this? Growing enough produce to feed your whole family is much more demanding than maintaining a small herb garden. Know what space you can devote to the garden and if it will be enough to foster those expectations. 40 NOV-DEC 2018 tampamagazines.com

successful — to grow food,” Grace says. “The money you spend, we want to see you get it back.” START WITH A RAISED BED OF SOIL Keeping the structure above ground, particularly in soggy South Tampa, will improve the longevity of the organic materials inside. “If you build a structure above ground and protect it, everything you buy and put in there will build value over time,” Grace says. “You’re not going to have to replace that soil every season when you replace plants or put new seeds in it.” Be conscious of the pros and cons of each poten-

CHOOSE A GARDEN SUPPLY STORE OVER A BOX STORE At a garden supply store like Urban Roots, the plants that are being grown are plants that are actually in season. “If you’re a big box store, you are under contract with nurseries, and the nurseries will just send them things,” Grace says. “It’s not necessarily things that are the healthiest or things that are in season to be planted.” Apart from the plants that are in season, you’ll see people with much more passion about gardening who can give you proper advice. Don’t hesitate to ask them for help. “Our goal is for you to be

PICK YOUR SOIL To stay natural, Grace advises choosing an organic, amended soil. An amended

soil already has the necessary fertilizer and nutrients in it, thereby removing the burden of buying extra fertilizer and adding it in yourself. However, he says, if you decide to mix from scratch, mix ⅓ peat moss material, ⅓ an aeration agent, and ⅓ of compost and then add a dry fertilizer. Another way to keep your soil organic and improve longevity of your garden is to start your own compost from old plant materials.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE SEASONS Grace says gardening newbies’ biggest mistake is not paying attention to what’s in season. During the late fall and winter, there is a long list of plants to choose from. “Plants like cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, celery, spinach, lettuces, kale and other leafy greens love the cold weather,” Grace says. Grace also noted that herbs prefer cooler weather and should be planted throughout fall and winter. He recommends buying heirloom seeds, which have no hybrids are both nonGMO and organic. ORGANIC IS NOT HIGHER MAINTENANCE Grace argued that it doesn’t matter whether you have an organic or chemical garden; you have to invest the time to get results. Changing your morning routine is a good way of making time for the garden. Pay attention to the temperatures and insects, and use preventative measures to protect your crop. “If you want to be a strong, productive human, you need good nutrition to make sure your body gets what it needs,” Grace said. “Plants are the same way.” Urban Roots Garden Supply 11780 N. tial bed material. Cinder blocks can leach chemicals and should only be used for flowers. Recycled fabric material is best for those who want something moveable and less permanent. Grace recommends building the bed out of cedar wood. “Cedar is bug resistant, safer and untreated,” Grace says. “If you buy a pressure-treated wood, for example, or something that has a deck stain on it, when it rains or as you water, it’s going to leach into your soil.”

Over the last year, we’ve really expanded our Med Spa. We have a nurse practitioner who is an artist with facial fillers, Botox and laser skin treatments. Our clinical aesthetician does everything in skin care, from facials and chemical peels to Intense Pulsed Light therapy. We’ve just added “Vampire Facials” with microneedling, and we recently installed a Dermal Infusion unit. Dermal Infusion cleans and exfoliates your skin while using hydro-pneumatic pressure to infuse serums and hydrate your deeper skin tissues. At our Med Spa, we offer the most advanced laser and skin care treatments on the market, all backed up by a great facial plastic surgery practice. Why did you decide to focus your practice solely on the face? The face is incredibly rich and complex, and there are so many variations in each procedure from patient to patient. We stay on top of the variety of treatments available and customize them to meet each patient’s specific needs. Every face is unique, and it’s always out on display, letting other people know your disposition and mood. It’s very special to me that my team and I are experts in the field of facial cosmetics. That focus on the face allows Davis Facial Plastic Surgery and Med Spa to provide our patients with the best options and care to meet their needs and wishes.

What should patients be sure to ask their plastic surgeon before committing to a procedure or treatment? After you’ve checked out your potential surgeon to see if they are board certified and qualified — not to mention experienced — to perform the procedure, your meeting with the doctor will be very valuable. Make sure you are comfortable with the office team, and get a good feeling about the assessment and care plan laid out by the surgeon. You should feel as if all of your questions and concerns have been addressed and that you have a good idea of reasonable expectations and recovery needs. When I meet with a patient, I try to make my recommendations as I would if they were a family member or neighbor. I want to make sure they do what is best for them in the long run. That will help them get the best results possible and is the best way to have happy patients.

I started by performing comprehensive hormone and nutrition visits. After a few years, patients that felt better were asking about ways to look their best, too. I found that I have a real love for aesthetics. The results are often immediate and noninvasive, which is in line with my holistic approach to medicine. Most importantly, these treatments make my patients really happy! You are an expert in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. What is that, and how does it benefit patients? Yes, I have published in peerreviewed journals on natural progesterone therapy. I treat men and women by evaluating the individual blood work and tailoring a protocol to his or her needs. Most people will feel improved overall energy, as well as libido. With women, we can often curb the side effects of menopause. What are some of your practice’s newest offerings on the medical aesthetics side? We are excited to announce that we have just added Coolsculpting, a noninvasive way to reduce body fat. We are now injecting the dermal filler Radiesse into the skin of the abdomen and above the elbows and knees to reduce the appearance

of “crepey” or sagging skin. Additionally, we now offer Nitrox to lessen pain during laser hair removal and Coolsculpting. How do you help your patients who want to lose weight? I am a board-certified physician nutrition specialist. We offer four different meal plans, including an anti-inflammatory diet. All the plans work; we help patients choose a plan that they will be able to stick with. If patients need appetite suppressants, there are also four medications to choose from. We are here for our patients every step of the way. We encourage them to come in weekly for support and optional vitamin injections. What else should patients know about Hermann Wellness? LAST BOOK YOU READ? “Physics for Future Presidents: The Science Behind the Headlines” by Richard A. Muller FAVORITE CHARITY? Crisis Center of Tampa Bay FAVORITE MEAL IN TAMPA? Malio’s porterhouse, medium-well FAVORITE HEALTHY LIVING TIP? Avoid foods treated with hormones or antibiotics

Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) are a group of conditions that affect the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue in the lowest part of the pelvis. It supports your organs, including the bowel, bladder, uterus, vagina and rectum. Women with pelvic floor disorders may experience bulging of the vaginal walls; urinary problems, such as urine leakage, an urgent need to urinate, painful urination or incomplete emptying of their bladder; stool leakage and/or constipation; straining or pain during bowel movements; pain or pressure in the vagina or rectum. What are some of the treatment options for pelvic floor problems? Generally, treatment options include pessaries (incontinence or prolapse); pelvic floor physical therapy (incontinence, constipation, prolapse or pain); neuromodulation (incontinence, fecal or urinary issues); Botox injections into the bladder or pelvic floor (urgency, incontinence or pain); or surgery (prolapse, incontinence). Sometimes, doing nothing is also an option. Why would it benefit a patient to see a pelvic medicine specialist instead of their regular OB/GYN? Many general OB/GYNs are capable of treating pelvic floor disorders, provided they have the proper training. Generally speaking, women with recurrent or complex pelvic floor disorders, surgical complications, or those who do not respond to initial

treatment are best served by seeing a female pelvic medicine specialist, who can offer a wider range of treatment options. You were a pioneer in the use of robotic surgery to treat pelvic prolapse and have trained more than 60 surgeons in the use of the Da Vinci robotic surgery system. What are some of the latest advances in pelvic medicine that you’re excited about? Many of the tried and true treatments for women with pelvic floor disorders have been available for some time. This includes surgical treatments for prolapse and incontinence. What is new and exciting is the emerging data from clinical trials that supports the efficacy of these treatments and the migration away from open abdominal surgery to minimally invasive (vaginal, laparoscopic and robotic) approaches to treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Physical therapy, Botox and neuromodulation are exciting, effective treatments for some pelvic floor disorders.

At the Colorectal Clinic of Tampa Bay, I offer treatment for a wide variety of colon and rectal conditions, including surgical and nonsurgical conditions related to colon and rectal surgery, such as diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, colon polyps, colon cancer and IBD, among others. How would someone know if they have a colon or rectal cancer? Colon and rectal cancer can be very vague in its earliest presentation, sometimes showing little to no symptoms at its beginning stages. That is why it is extremely important to focus on the preventative aspect of colon and rectal cancer with colonoscopies at the appropriate age. The most recent recommendation for screening with colonoscopies was changed from 50 years old without any high risk factors to 45 years old, based on the increased rate of colon and rectal cancer in younger patients seen recently. Those recommendations can change depending on family history or other conditions where there is a higher risk of developing colon cancer at an early age. The signs and symptoms of colorectal cancer can include blood in the stool, anemia, unintentional weight loss, and a change in the caliber and frequency of bowel movements. What are some of the latest advancements in the treatment options for colon and rectal cancer? Fortunately over the past few years,

less invasive surgical approaches have been developed, and I am especially interested in combining the robot with transanal surgery called TAMIS. TAMIS allows me to treat tumors and cancers that would have previously required a patient to have a permanent colostomy with a much less invasive approach that preserves their anal function. It is always important for any colorectal surgeon to follow oncologic principles (optimizing tumor/cancer removal to ensure complete removal and appropriate staging). Robotic surgery offers me advantages to operate in confined spaces like the pelvis, and it allows me to have increased maneuverability and precision when I operate. Patients have improved outcomes, less pain and quicker recovery. What should patients know about the Colorectal Clinic of Tampa Bay? We have three surgeons, including myself, at CRCTB. Dr. InSoon Park trained at Mount Sinai in New York City, and Dr. Jeffrey Mino trained at the Cleveland Clinic. All three of us are dedicated to and specialize in colorectal and anorectal issues.

BORIS KAWLICHE, M.D. Psychatrist | BRANDON TMS AND PSYCHIATRY

Dr. Boris Kawliche is a board-certified psychiatrist and one of Tampa Bay’s few providers of TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). He is also the first local psychiatrist to use Theta Burst, an advanced form of TMS that requires fewer, shorter sessions than traditional TMS.

Who is a good candidate for TMS to treat their depression? Someone who has not improved with traditional depression treatments. If you have tried at least four antidepressants and had some form of talk therapy without significant improvement, all insurances, with the exception of Medicaid, will cover your traditional TMS. FAVORITE HEALTHY LIVING TIP? Everything in moderation

Brandon TMS and Psychiatry is the first TMS practice in the Tampa Bay area to offer Theta Burst. What is it, and how is it beneficial to patients? Theta Burst is the newest FDAapproved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation technique. Most scientists agree that Theta Burst is equivalent in efficacy and safety to traditional TMS, which takes nine weeks to complete. The main advantage of Theta Burst is that it is much faster. It can be completed in as little as a week’s time. It gives patients much more flexibility and many more options. We are offering Theta Burst at the promotional cost of $7,000 to those who mention this ad. How has TMS helped your patients? We have seen patients that did not respond to ECT or traditional TMS go into remission with Theta Burst

TMS. We are also on the cutting edge of using Theta Burst to treat children and adolescents, and we have seen very promising results. There are only two machines in the Tampa Bay area capable of performing this advanced form of TMS, and they have been operated by Brandon TMS and Psychiatry off-label for two years prior to the FDA approval. How has Theta Burst TMS helped your patients? TMS and Theta Burst are only FDA approved so far for treatment-resistant depression, and Deep TMS just got FDA approval for OCD. We see excellent results with many other conditions, and the following are being researched: generalized anxiety, bipolar depression, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, autistic spectrum, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, addictions, migraines, fibromyalgia and low back pain. The Veterans Administration purchased 40 of these systems to treat PTSD and traumatic brain injuries last year. The Navy SEALs are exploring their potential to help those elite troops during the rigors of combat. We offer special discounts to the armed forces.

How is TMS different from traditional methods of treating depression, like antidepressants and therapy? TMS is different because it does not use medication. Are there any health risks associated with TMS? No, there are no health risks involved, which is another difference from medications. Some people will have discomfort at the contact point with the scalp. There is a small risk of seizure, which is estimated at 1 in 30,000 treatments. TMS has been under investigation and use for more than 30 years. It is the safest psychiatric treatment available. TMS of South Tampa has now been using TMS for five years. What kind of impact has TMS had on your patients? It’s had a terrific impact on patients who are tired of medications causing side effects and not helping. The results from my practice show 74 percent of patients feel better after TMS, and 44 percent of patients have a complete resolution of their depression. The results have been truly amazing. TMS has also had a great impact on myself and my staff,

helping us feel better about the service we provide. TMS is now covered by a wide variety of insurance plans. Why is that important for patients? Patients want proven medical treatments to be covered by insurance. TMS is now an affordable option for many more people. At TMS of South Tampa, we accept Cigna, United, Aetna, Medicare, Baycare, Woods & Associates and TriCare (with single case agreement). Who is a good candidate for TMS? Anyone with major depression is a good candidate for TMS. For insurance to cover the treatment, patients will have had to have tried and failed to treat their depression with traditional medications and therapy. This year, I have also added TMS treatments for anxiety, PTSD, tinnitus and migraines to my practice.
