LINX® REFLUX MANAGEMENT SYSTEM An Innovative Cure for Reflux & GERD That is Here to Stay South Tampa Reflux Surgeon Spotlight: DR. GOPAL GRANDHIGE

Offering all successful treatments for chronic reflux/GERD and hiatal hernias. The LINX® Reflux Management System is one of three surgical procedures available to treat reflux and GERD - Lap Fundoplication, Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF/Esophyx), and LINX®. Although all three procedures are offered at Tampa Bay Reflux Center allowing patients to make a tailored choice, local surgeon Dr. Gopal Grandhige has become one of the national leaders in reflux and the LINX® Reflux Management System, a cutting edge surgical treatment option for patients who suffer from chronic reflux and GERD. Dr. Grandhige is part of a small circle of physicians who are true pioneers of the LINX® procedure. He’s been involved with the LINX® system from the time it was FDA approved, and is ranked 1st in the state of Florida and 5th in the nation for the most procedures performed.

How It Works The LINX® Reflux Management system is a small, flexible band of magnets enclosed in titanium beads. Connected by titanium wires, the LINX® system is placed around the patient’s lower esophageal sphincter by using a common, minimally invasive surgical technique called laparoscopy. The magnetic attraction between the beads helps keep the LES tight and prevents reflux by ensuring that it closes back up after swallowing, keeping stomach acid and bile from splashing back up into the esophagus. Highly effective at reducing GERD symptoms long-term and lacking many of the side effects that result from other surgical alternatives, the LINX® procedure is an innovative treatment option in the world of reflux management, particularly for patients who have a partially functioning sphincter.

BENEFITS OF LINX® SURGERY FOR REFLUX

Outpatient Procedure

High Effectiveness Rate

No overnight stay like with fundoplication surgeries, patients go home same day.

90-92% of patients report symptom reduction and come off their daily reflux medications immediately post-surgery.

Very Few Side Effects

Minimal Recovery Time

Ability to burp and vomit are preserved identically to what they were pre-operatively, and LINX® patients experience less side effects like bloating and dysphagia post-procedure than patients who undergo fundoplication.

While other reflux surgeries like Nissen Fundoplication can require patients to take 2 weeks off work and have a recovery period of up to 8 weeks, LINX® patients can generally go back to work in just 5 days with no additional recovery.

EDITOR’S LETTER

MCKENNA KELLEY Managing Editor

Summer is winding down here in Tampa — at least that’s what the calendar says. The thermometer? Not so much. But with our annual Football and Back-to-School Issue, we’re celebrating the milestones that mark the beginning of fall. Just before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker Kwon Alexander arrived for our cover shoot, a Bucs staffer told us to make sure we captured his smile on camera. It involved no work on our end; Kwon’s joyous grin was infectious. We sat down with Kwon just before training camp kicked off to chat about his foundation, expectations for the upcoming season, and his epic nickname: LiTiRilla. Read more starting on page 36. Speaking of football, it’s also time to start planning this season’s tailgates. FYI, parking lots at Raymond James Stadium will open 3 ½ hours before Buccaneers games, and five hours before USF Bulls games. That means you’ll have plenty of time to whip up some of the tasty tailgating recipes from local restaurants on page 58 and at tampamagazines.com/tailgating. We’ve also brought back our Whiz Kids feature for a third year. South Tampa’s principals recommended a group of truly impressive students who are doing everything from building websites to raising money for their classmate battling an illness. See their stories beginning on page 48. Finally, make sure to get your votes in for the 2018 Tampa’s Best Restaurants list on tampamagazines.com. The top vote-getters — along with the winners of the 2018 Tampa Sandwich Hunt — will be featured in TAMPA Magazine’s Restaurant Issue, which hits stands in late September. It’s possible with help from the team at Brandon TMS and Psychiatry When you’ve had no success relieving your treatment-resistant depression, Boris Kawliche, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist, has another option. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is FDA-approved to reduce depression symptoms with very little risk of side effects. TMS uses electromagnetic induction to stimulate the prefrontal cortex, which can be grossly underactive in people with depression; in studies, 60 percent of TMS patients have experienced remission from depression. Brandon TMS and Psychiatry will soon be featured on the documentary series “Success Files,” hosted by actor Rob Lowe, representing the southeastern United States for its cutting-edge efforts in TMS. The documentary will air nationally on PBS, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC this summer. Dr. Kawliche accepts almost all insurance plans for adults 18 and over who have been diagnosed with depression. Call today to learn more about TMS and to schedule an appointment.

The Nueva Cantina team isn’t offended if you refer to the restaurant as “that Mexican place.” The nickname, lovingly given to the original St. Petersburg outpost, has helped propel Nueva Cantina across the bay and into their new location near Ballast Point — the longtime home of Love’s Artifacts Bar and Grill. “In February we purchased and renovated our first food truck and realized it was time to do another brick and mortar store,” says Nueva Cantina managing partner Louie Spetrini. “With an eye on South Tampa for quite some time, we knew we wanted to be part of the renaissance that is excitingly happening right now and could not be more pleased with the neighborhood’s enthusiasm.” The restaurant specializes in Central Mexican dishes, like tacos and burritos, enchiladas, chile relleno and pollo mole, made with fresh ingredients and modern twists. Inside, local artists the Vitale Brothers created edgy and vibrant murals to liven up the dining room, while a lighted patio bar keeps the party going outside.

Inspired by the thrill of a good deal and the positive effect of recycling on the environment, shopping at thrift and vintage stores is hotter than ever. South Tampa’s new Vintage Etc. focuses mainly on higher-end items, with stock from brands like Lilly Pulitzer, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and BCBG, and even new items from lines like Vince Camuto. The store’s staff washes, dry-cleans or sanitizes each item before it hits the sales floor to eliminate any lingering odors from its original home. “It’s an extra step you can smell,” says Vintage Etc. manager Ann Morrick. One of the store’s more interesting recent donations was an unworn $1,350 wedding gown with the tags still on it. “A single mother was in here shopping, and she saw the dress, fell in love with it, and bought it for $125,” Morrick says. “She said ‘yes to the dress’!” Proceeds from Vintage Etc. benefit the Dream Center of Tampa, a youth and community center in Ybor City run by the Grace Family Church that hosts kids in kindergarten through 12th grade at afterschool programs and performs monthly “Adopt-a-Block” outreach programs.

Q A

Q: What is your top tip for timestretched parents who want to pack wholesome, nutritious lunches for their kids to take to school?

A: Plan ahead! Take time over the weekend to plan out what the next week of lunches looks like, and prep what you can ahead of time. Healthy pre-packaged foods such as yogurts, crackers, veggie chips and hummus will help take some of the stress off of you. A great source I recommend to clients for health-focused kids’ lunch ideas is Weelicious.com.

Q: Your business revolves around wellness. Where do you like to go in town to be well? A: I love the Restorative Healing Wellness center and their ozone sauna, which incorporates oxygen, aromatherapy and micro-currents. I also enjoy a good sweat sesh at the newly opened Sweatology! Their detox sauna beds allow me to sweat it out while getting an infrared LED therapy facial at the same time. Q: Outside of LS Organics, where do you like to go for a healthy meal in Tampa? A: I’m a creature of habit, so every Friday night you can find me at SoHo Sushi having a fresh sushi roll, edamame and asparamaki. Boca is another favorite healthy go-to. I order the shishito peppers (heavily charred!), and I love their shrimp Thai salad. Q: Where do you like to go to catch a Buccaneers game? A: First of all, go Bucs! My husband is the team dietician, so Sundays are reserved for God and NFL football. If the Bucs are in town, you can find me at the stadium. If they’re away, I’ll get together with some of the other football wives at someone’s house. I also enjoy American Social since it’s so close to where I live.

This season, the spotlight is on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Kwon Alexander

Most of what you need to know about linebacker Kwon Alexander can be found in his surely one-of-a-kind nickname: LiTiRilla. “It happened at pregame,” he says. “We were on the field, and it just popped into my mind: LiTiRilla. I just said it in the camera,” that was there recording for the team’s appearance on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. The name, the combination of a lion, tiger and gorilla, embodies what Alexander seeks to emulate on the football field. That is, the lion’s regal leadership within the animal kingdom, the gruff toughness of a gorilla, and the smooth finesse of a tiger (“Whatever he wants, he’s going to go get it,” Alexander says). The name took off with teammates and fans, and Alexander even launched a LiTiRilla T-shirt line later in the season. 36   SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 tampamagazines.com

tampamagazines.com SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 37

His work ethic has helped Alexander — taken by the Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft — excel in his three seasons with the team. He will once again serve as a team captain for the upcoming season, and he will receive a heavy salary bump this year thanks to an NFL policy that rewards lower-round draft picks who have played significant time over the first few years of their rookie contract. Alexander has played in all 40 games he’s started and become an integral part of the Buccaneers’ defense with partner Lavonte David. “I came in with the mindset to start,” Alexander says. “That’s just the way I am. I always do everything right and just try to better myself. That was my mindset when I came in, and I got the job.” This year, Kwon Alexander is putting in that same work to help the Buccaneers break into the postseason for the first time since 2007. Off the field, Alexander is sharing his success with the kids who need it most through the new Kwon Alexander Foundation. He recently sat down with South Tampa Magazine to discuss the upcoming season, and one message quickly became clear. Look out, world. Kwon is coming for you. South Tampa Magazine: Tell us about the hair. What inspired the red? I wanted to brand myself. I love red, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are red, so I said, “I’ll try something different and

dye my hair red.” Everybody loved it, so I kept it. I dyed it last year before camp, and we had the TV show [HBO’s “Hard Knocks”], so I wanted to do something to get my name and face out there. What are some of the lessons you learned during your time at LSU you now apply as a Buccaneer? They taught me a lot — how to take care of myself. Especially coming out of high school, I had to learn fast. Anybody who comes out of high school and goes right to college has to learn fast. They

were treating us like NFL athletes, so we had to have our heads on straight, be on time, be prepared for everything that came at us. It was a big experience for me, and I enjoyed every bit of it. There’s been some talk that you’re a player to watch this year. What did you do differently during the offseason to elevate your game? Something that played a big part this year was that I started eating healthy. I used to just eat anything. I like food, and I like sweets and cakes and stuff like that. I really changed my mindset on that to better myself and see how that feels. It feels great. I have a lot more energy than I did. tampamagazines.com SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 39

If you want something, go get it on your own. Just think positively because it plays a big part in your life.” On Twitter, when it comes to the Bucs, you’re like a hype machine. What do you think is different about the team this year that you think will bring you guys to the next level? A big thing about this team that I feel this year is that we have a lot more energy. Guys really want more than what we’ve been doing. People are going out to work. They’re taking it seriously. Coach-

es, everybody else is taking it seriously. Everybody is getting to the main point of what we want to do. I feel like everybody’s on board with that. I know you and Lavonte David are close. Tell me about what that relationship means to you. It means a lot. It’s like I’ve got a big brother here that I know I can depend on whenever. Whenever I need to talk I call him, and he always answers the phone. It just feels special when you have somebody right there for you — not being lonely.

This past season, you went to your first Pro Bowl. What did that honor mean to you? That felt great. It was a big compliment for me. Coming fourth round, people were doubting me because of my size and all kinds of things. Then I get a phone call like that. I’m happy that all the work I did has paid off. But I’m not finished yet. I have a lot more to do. I’m just ready to go back again and show the world and get ready for the season. In May, you started the Kwon

their heads on straight and keep their grades straight, and they can do it. You just have to focus in on one thing, and you never know what can happen. You wrote an article for the website The Player’s Tribune about losing your brother to gun violence just two days before a game during the 2015 season. Tell me a little bit about how your love for your brother and his memory has changed how you live your life. It changed a lot. I think about him every morning when I wake up. I think

Alexander Foundation. What are some of the causes that it supports? The cause for my foundation is really to help kids — to prepare them and change their mindset. A lot of kids’ mindsets are pretty average, and I’m really trying to preach greatness and tell the kids they can do whatever they want to do. They have to work for it. It’s not just going to fall into their hands. They have to hang around the right people, successful people. They have to keep

about him every day. It changed the way I approach things — just to be happy I’m alive. Any day you can be gone, so I appreciate every day that I wake up. Every day I grind and go get it. Football is something I love. I just know he’s always there with me, so I feel like I’m undefeated. I can’t be touched. That’s my whole mindset, and that’s how I go in on every day.

You’re very into fashion, and you even have your own T-shirt line inspired by your nickname, LiTiRilla. How did you get into style? I just love fashion. I love clothes. I love shopping, period. I like to look very, very clean. It’s just something I love to do. I’ve got a passion for it. When I’m done with football, I want to do fashion. I’ve got to go to Paris. I want to go to all those places to see those fashion districts and things like that. For my T-shirt line, I

did the LiTiRilla shirts because that’s my brand, and I wanted to do something creative. It’s been going well. You’ve talked a little bit about your son. What are some of the lessons you’re trying to instill in him at a young age? He’s only 1 right now, so it’s kind of hard to teach him anything [laughs]. He’s not really listening. successful, to think positively. It’s the same thing as with my foundation — help him out. I’m doing this right now to show him how to be successful and how to take care of yourself and not ask anybody for anything. If you want something, go get it on your own. Just think positively because it plays a big part in your life. When he grows up, he’ll know those things. I’m going to start it in his mind as much as I can. I just feel like he’s going to be great, regardless. That’s just how he is. The things that he does just naturally is fun to watch. What are some of your favorite things to do with him for father-son time? I like going shopping with him. I like just being around him, period. It’s just a great feeling. I love to play basketball with him. Like I said, it’s just natural

things he does. I don’t even have to tell him to go dunk the ball. He goes and dunks the ball on his own at 1 year old. The other day he dunked it like five times on the high goal. I was like, wow. I didn’t even teach him that. He’s just doing it on his own strength. It’s some amazing things that he’s doing. That’s why I can’t wait to be able to talk and do all kinds of other things. It’s going to be fun. Finally, this is also our back-toschool issue. If you hadn’t made it to the NFL, what career path would you have taken after you left LSU? I would have tried to own my own business, especially something with fashion, then work my way up to the top. Build something that I love and just set my mind on it. I would pick out one thing and go hard at it and be the best I can.

South Tampa

Magazine’s Whiz Kids

2018 By Marcy Sanford

PH OTO

We asked principals from area schools to nominate students who routinely go the extra mile when it comes to academics, sports, arts or volunteer work. We received many wonderful stories of kids from all across South Tampa who are making their schools and city better, but we only have room to share a few. From ones who are always willing to try new things to others who have dedicated their time to just one activity; a class that has rallied behind their friend to others who found a way to help many, these students shine bright, and Tampa is better because of them.

Ms. D’Aloia’s Second Grade Class

— Lauren D’Aloia

MacFarlane Park Elementary School

Helping Hands When 8-year-old Morgan Allen won a prize at school, she shared it with a child who had not won. “She makes presents for everyone to make them feel special, even if she hasn’t known them long,” says her mother, Bhavana Patel. Morgan’s kindness came back to her tenfold this year when her classmates at MacFarlane Park Elementary rallied

to support her after she was diagnosed with a rare brain cancer. From issuing a city-wide “Lemon Face Challenge” (an effort to fundraise for a foundation fighting Morgan’s form of brain cancer) to selling slime and pillowcases to help cover Morgan’s medical expenses, Ms. D’Aloia’s second grade class stepped up to the challenge of helping a friend in need and learned some valuable life lessons along the way.

“The kids have been amazing,” says teacher Lauren D’Aloia. “They organized a lot of fundraisers this year, planning many of them during recess.” While the students held the traditional bake and lemonade sales, they also got the chance to design a pillowcase to be sold on MermaidPillowCo.com to benefit Morgan’s medical care. “We were able to have a Skype conference with the owner and the class, so they could learn about

entrepreneurship and how to create the pillowcase,” D’Aloia says. “They created different designs, voted on the one they liked best and wrote a description for the website.” More than anything, Ms. D’Aloia says the kids have learned how to be good friends this year. “They have been so amazing,” she says. “They don’t ever show Morgan that they think she is different from them. They are excited to see her when she’s able to come to class and made a sign-up sheet for who would be her helper during the day. I’ve never had to ask the kids to support her; they always wanted to.”

Emily Garcia & Chela Levy Mitchell Elementary

Tech Titans

Fifth-graders Emily Garcia and Chela Levy had already finished all the extra credit homework their teacher, Mrs. Kathy Hill, had assigned, so she challenged them to start their own project.

What the girls came up with was a website that piqued their classmates’ interest in reading while helping them study for the language arts portion of Florida’s standardized test. The site, called ELA Anywhere, included articles that kids would enjoy reading and then had a series of multiple choice questions to answer based on the text, much like the actual test. “We looked up articles online that were kid-friendly,” says Chela. “We

found ones we liked and figured other kids would like them too.” Subjects on the site ranged from a dance move called “flossing” to the video game Fortnite, and from chewing gum to the Muppets. “If it is interesting for kids to read, they will try harder,” Emily says. The girls found that their classmates were enjoying their practice site so much that the duo began working during recess to keep up with the demand for new articles and questions. Eventually they had to enlist the help of classmates,

and they “hired” article assigners and question writers. “It was hard to choose people for each job,” Emily says. “Everyone was friends and we didn’t want anyone to feel left out.” The girls hope to improve and expand on the site next year, and Mrs. Hill says she will use it for future students. “Any time spent practicing reading is good,” she adds. “In general, it made a positive difference in the attitude toward the test. These girls take everything they do to the next level. They are the top of their class in everything while also being kind, fun and inclusive.” Practice website: Abc123-hill95.webnode.com

Harrison Rainey St. John’s Middle School

Renaissance Kid Sports, theatre, academics, volunteering — no matter what it is, Harrison Rainey is always willing to try new activities and lend a helping hand. “Harrison is one of our most active school community leaders,” St. John’s Middle School principal Justin Smith says. “He proactively seeks out opportunities to help St. John’s student body, teachers and administration, and he is the first one to raise his hand when volunteers are needed.” Harrison says his experience auditioning for school plays helped him become more confident speaking in front

of crowds, like during his presentation at this year’s Latin state meet, where he placed third in the region, and with his winning student council speech. “Being on stage gave me confidence in other areas,” Harrison says. “Last year when I gave my student council speech, I was shaking. This year I was much more confident.” Harrison also plays basketball and soccer and is on competitive teams for swim and tennis, is a member of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and is an avid volunteer for many local organizations. This year, NJHS members were asked to complete 20 service hours at some point during the 2018-19 school year. Harrison completed 105 just over the summer at local organizations like the Humane Society and Metropolitan Ministries. “I like meeting new people,” he says. “I like helping people.”

Eve Glenn

Robinson High School

Dedication to Others Eve Glenn started volunteering when her father was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. Only 4 years old, she was thrilled to be asked by her older brothers to join in their efforts to clean up a community school. Fast forward 13 years and 11 moves later, and the vivacious 17-year-old has volunteered more than 1,900 hours during high school alone. Her altruism was one

of the reasons she was recently honored as the 2018 Air Force Military Child of the Year, a national award. Eve has made it a point to use her interests to find volunteer opportunities whenever her family was stationed somewhere new. She’s volunteered for military organizations, mentored new Irish dancers and tutored children in science, technology, engineering and math. “Helping others helps me to have a better view of the world,” Eve says. In fact, Eve credits volunteering with helping her adjust to new cities and countries. “It helped me to find other people in the community who had the same values as me,” like when her family lived near a refugee camp in Germany last year, she says. “I became friends with many of the refugees and realized how much we had in common.” After graduating as Robinson High School’s traditional valedictorian, Eve will head to Brown University this fall and has already applied to volunteer with the Veterans Administration hospital there. “I hope to be very involved in college,” she says. “With enough effort you can turn something good into something great.”

Jake & Dean Criser Plant High School

Creating Connections Identical twins Jake and Dean Criser have participated in many activities throughout high school, including Plant High’s newspaper, the Plant Rowing Team, and the elite Gold & Black Honor Society, to name a few. Though their list of activities is long, both young men agree that their most meaningful experience has been volunteering at Cornerstone Kids through the Teens in Action program. Cornerstone Kids is an after-school enrichment program whose mission is to help at-risk children ages 5 to 11 with their educational, spiritual and emotional development. “We’ve been volunteering there since

we were freshmen,” says Jake. “It is great to get to know the kids and become friends with them and help them out.” Each week the boys work with other teen volunteers to plan an activity and snack based on that week’s theme. “We’ve grown plants for Earth Day, played games to learn about different cultures and performed skits on how to deal with confrontation,” Jake adds. “It is great to work with children because you can see the impact you are having and connect with them,” says Dean, who also volunteers during the summer at a day camp for kids. Jake agrees, “Getting to see the kids gives you a reason to come back. You learn about yourself and how to deal with different people. The kids are glad to see us all there and it makes you look forward to going, makes you appreciate what you do, and makes you more mindful of others.”

Lauren Lampinen

Woodrow Wilson Middle School

Gliding to Great Heights People have lots of reasons to appreciate their siblings, but Lauren Lampinen has her younger brother to thank for helping her discover her love of ice skating. Though Lauren’s father owns a business across the street from an ice rink, no one in the family had ever skated. If it weren’t for the hiring of a nanny with a love for the sport, Lauren may have never discovered her special talent for

figure skating. “When my brother was younger, he had a nanny who had been an ice-skating coach,” she says. “She would take me to the ice-skating rink and started coaching me.” Seven years later, Lauren has won hundreds of medals and is currently ranked third in the state and 13th in U.S. Figure Skating’s South Atlantic region at the intermediate level. She does all this while earning straight A’s at Wilson Middle School and taking advanced math classes. “Lauren is an extremely impressive young lady,” said Wilson Middle School assistant principal Deedra Copeland. “She is liked by all her peers, and the teachers love her.” Lauren trains 12 hours a week during the school year and has spent her entire summer in Orlando training from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. She’s now working on her triple-jump so she can incorporate it into her competition choreography this year. “My goal is to see how far I can go with ice-skating,” she says. “When I’m on the ice, it is very calming. I forget about everything else and focus on skating.”

Chop Chop with Roasted Garlic Mash & The Devil’s Eggs Fire up the grill for this pork chop recipe created by Alex Leinhauser, chef at The Local — one of South Tampa’s newest restaurants. You’ll find his tips and tricks throughout the recipes below, including easy athome (or at-parking lot) alternatives for preparation. Prep the chops ahead of time to put on the grill when you get to your tailgate, and pair them with the sinfully delicious deep-fried deviled eggs (find that recipe at tam2 bone-in pork chops (preferably Frenched pork chops) 1 apple (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp or ambrosia) 1 ½ cups apple cider 2 oz. brandy 1 oz. roux (flour and butter) 4 sage leaves Salt and pepper to taste 1 lb. potatoes for mash ½ lb. unsalted butter, softened (not melted) 2 oz. heavy cream ½ clove of garlic, roasted

Mashed potatoes:

1. Put whole garlic cloves into the oven to roast. Take out at the same time the potatoes are done. 2. Triple wash the potatoes. Peel skin and cut into 2-inch pieces. 3. Boil for 15-20 minutes. The potatoes are ready when they can be broken by a fork with minimal effort. 4. Drain quickly. 5. If available, take a mesh strainer and press the cooked potatoes through it into a bowl. This is a time-consuming step, but it ensures you have no lumps in your mash. 6. Whip in the butter, cream and roasted garlic.

Apple gravy:

1. Cut apple into 8 slices; keep them thick.

2. In a sauce pot, add 2 oz. of butter and the sage, allowing butter to brown. 3. Once you smell “caramel,” add the apples and sauté for 2 minutes to get the color on apples. 4. Add brandy, and allow the alcohol to burn off. 5. Add apple cider and bring to a boil. 6. Add the roux. Make sure to whisk well to allow the roux to distribute evenly and not clump. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Pork chops:

1. Heat grill to around 500°. 2. Rub chops lightly with oil, salt and pepper, then place on the grill. 3. For chops that average around 8 oz. each, turn them 45 degrees after 2 min-

Tip from chef Alex Leinhauser: “A good rule for everyone to go by when dredging to fry an ingredient is one hand wet, one hand dry. Don’t dip hands covered with flour in the wet mix or vice versa.”

FOR YOUR NEXT TAILGATE, CHOOSE A BETTER BURGER.

utes. Flip the chops after 3 minutes. Turn the chops 45 degrees again after 3 minutes for a lightly medium-well pork chop. 4. Place mashed potatoes on the center of the plate. Layer the pork chops on top of the mash. Top with apple gravy, to taste.
