Fall Into Place Summer is winding down here in Tampa — at least that’s what the calendar says. The thermometer? Not so much. But with our Football and Back-to-School Issue, we’re celebrating the milestones that mark the beginning of fall. Just days before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened training camp, we sat down with linebacker Kwon Alexander to discuss his foundation, his incredible nickname (LiTiRilla — that’s “lie-tie-rill-uh”) and his collection of tattoos. Kwon was even gracious enough to let us photograph one of his most meaningful pieces, a dedication to his late brother Broderick that reads, “All you wanted me to do was ball.” Read more about Kwon’s football journey so far beginning on page 34. The beginning of football season also means it’s time to starting planning your tailgates. Whip up the tasty tailgating recipes from local restaurants that we’re sharing on page 50 to seriously impress your guests. When it comes to grabbing a bite after the game, we’ve compiled a list of some of the top spots across Tampa offering late-night eats perfect for a midnight snack or as fuel to keep the party going (page 56). Though the school bell stopped ringing for most of us quite some time ago, that doesn’t mean learning has to end. On page 42, we put together a syllabus of fun, unique or just plain useful classes, workshops and activities for the students in us all. Finally, make sure to get your votes in for the 2018 Tampa’s Best Restaurants list on tampamagazines.com. The top vote-getters — along with the winners of the 2018 Tampa Sandwich Hunt — will be featured in TAMPA Magazine’s Restaurant Issue, which hits stands in late September.

It’s possible with help from the team at Brandon TMS and Psychiatry When you’ve had no success relieving your treatment-resistant depression, Boris Kawliche, M.D., a board-certified psychiatrist, has another option. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS, is FDA-approved to reduce depression symptoms with very little risk of side effects. TMS uses electromagnetic induction to stimulate the prefrontal cortex, which can be grossly underactive in people with depression; in studies, 60 percent of TMS patients have experienced remission from depression. Brandon TMS and Psychiatry will soon be featured on the documentary series “Success Files,” hosted by actor Rob Lowe, representing the southeastern United States for its cutting-edge efforts in TMS. The documentary will air nationally on PBS, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC this summer. Dr. Kawliche accepts almost all insurance plans for adults 18 and over who have been diagnosed with depression. WHAT’S NEW Seminole Heights

Mix experienced St. Petersburg business owners with a growing urban Tampa neighborhood with a passion for craft cocktails and tasty Latin American bites, and you’ll get the new Bodega and Mandarin Heights location in Seminole Heights. Specializing in unique cocktails with a design owner Ryan Griffin describes as “1960s, mid-century, Palm Springs-inspired,” Mandarin Heights is the sister concept to the craft cocktail bar Mandarin Hide in St. Pete. This is also the second location for George and Debbie Sayegh’s Bodega, which features Latin-inspired sandwiches (including their fan-favorite Cuban), salads, coffees and juices. The two concepts share the indoor-outdoor spot on Florida Avenue, which Griffin and his partners Blake Thompson and Bill Griffin came across as they searched for a new Mandarin Hide location. Griffin pitched the idea of a collaboration to the Sayeghs, who, coincidentally, had also been looking to expand to Seminole Heights. “We came and looked at it, and it was just the right spot for Bodega,” Debbie says. “Seminole Heights reminds us a bit of the Edge District in St. Pete from years ago before it became what it is now.” “We fell in love with the neighborhood and its unique character,” adds Griffin. “For us, it’s kind of an exciting area full of other creative innovators and entrepreneurs who are building great concepts.”

As Tampa builds and rebuilds, the old Channelside Bay Plaza is no exception. In late July, Tampa-based real estate development company Strategic Property Partners unveiled plans to transform the space into a creative mixed-use redevelopment near Water Street Tampa called Sparkman Wharf. The name comes from the region’s first congressman, Steven Sparkman. He secured the federal funding to dig the deep-water channels to downtown, creating Port Tampa Bay and allowing larger ships to come closer to downtown and historic Ybor City. Sparkman Channel, found on the east side of Harbour Island, also bears his name. Concepts inside the soon to-be destination’s dining garden are still being announced, but as of this printing they include offerings from Rooster & the Till’s chef Ferrell Alvarez, Mise en Place’s Marty Blitz and Maryann Ferenc, SaltBlock Hospitality’s Boat Run Oyster Co., chef BT Nguyen, Foundation Coffee, and Whatever Pops, plus Fermented Reality, a craft beer garden. Currently under construction by Tampa-based contractor EWI, the grand opening of the dining garden, beer garden, and recreational lawn is planned for October 2018. —Carly Thompson

TAMPA CONFIDENTIAL Ask the Insider

Ryan Griffin PARTNER, MANDARIN HEIGHTS

Q A

Q: You are a partner in multiple St. Petersburg businesses, but this is your first Tampa concept. How has the city changed in recent years to be more ready for modern concepts like yours? A: Tampa is coming into an identity and developing its neighborhoods. They each have their own character. Tampa has a lot of momentum right now, and it’s starting to become more unified. Things like the Riverwalk and Armature Works, have been galvanizing items that have brought a lot of passion into Tampa. With that passion you attract a lot of people willing

to try new things and do interesting concepts. Q: What is your favorite Seminole Heights restaurant? A: There are a lot of great spots, and I couldn’t name all the ones I enjoy going to. I’ve gotten to know the owners of Rooster & the Till, The Refinery and Ichicoro, and I sit in between those three. They are all doing great stuff and have been supportive. I would do a progressive dinner between those three locations, starting at Ichicoro and making my way up. I did the chef’s menu at Rooster & the Till, and the flavors of everything were incredible. Q: How about your favorite restaurant elsewhere in the urban core? A: Even though it’s something a lot of people say, Armature Works has so many concepts in it that it’s pretty exciting. It’s like being a kid in a candy store there. I love having a cocktail at Fine & Dandy and taking in the design of the historic armature building juxtaposed with the modern amenities. Q: Where else do you go to relax with a cocktail? A: My true honest answer is just having a classic martini at Bern’s bar talking to Marco, the bartender there. Marco is iconic. He’s been there for so long, and he makes a great martini.

Ain’t No Condo High Enough

Two of the region’s tallest residential buildings are ready to put down stakes in Downtown Tampa

Éleve 61

858 CHANNELSIDE DRIVE ELEVE61.COM “Private urban living” is typically an oxymoron, but the recently approved Éleve 61 promises both. The condo tower will hold just 61 residences, with two three-bedroom units on each floor and no shared walls between the two.

Though details on residential amenities are still trickling out, developers at Mercury Advisors have announced each residence will have floor-to-ceiling glass for views around downtown and Ybor City, and residents can take advantage of indoor-outdoor fitness and social spaces. At 35 stories, Éleve 61 will be the second-tallest residential building in Tampa; the Element building is also 35 stories but clocks in slightly taller. Perhaps Éleve 61’s biggest selling point is its proximity to the future Water Street Tampa development and Sparkman Wharf, the revamped Channelside Bay Plaza. The building’s sales office is expected to open in the fall with prices starting in the $800,000s. Construction is slated to start in early 2019.

Tampa’s showiest new residential development is getting underway. Riverwalk Tower, developed by Feldman Equities on what is supposedly the last empty waterfront lot in downtown, is slated to include luxury condos on 33 of its 52 stories, beginning on floor 22. Residents will have their choice of six different floor plans, ranging from a 1,120 squarefoot one-bedroom, two-bedroom to a 2,738 square-foot three-bedroom, three-bathroom. Amenities include a

20th floor “Sky Lobby,” a pool and green lounge space atop the adjacent parking garage, two guest suites, casual and formal club rooms and a private dining space. Feldman Equities has even enlisted a celebrity interior designer — Thom Filicia from the original “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” on Bravo — to appoint the Sky Lobby and common areas. Living in luxury at what is soon to be the tallest building on the west coast of Florida doesn’t come cheap: starting prices begin in the $600,000s for smaller “livework” units and go up to $1.75 million for the largest non-penthouse floor plan. Smith & Associates is expected to begin taking reservations late this summer, with a groundbreaking anticipated for next spring.

“I wanted to brand myself,” he says.

The former fourth-round pick has made a quiet but undeniable impact in his three seasons with the Bucs, starting all 40 games he’s played and becoming one of only five NFL players to record more than 95 tackles and three interceptions in 2017. Around Tampa, he’s become a fan favorite thanks to his headdown, no-nonsense work ethic even in the face of tragedy. His beloved 17-year-old brother, Broderick, was shot and killed in 2015, two days before Alexander was to help the Buccaneers take on the Atlanta Falcons just 90 minutes away from his Alabama hometown.

With the support of his family, Alexander played and had the best game of his career, recording two interceptions, a pass-breakup and 11 tackles. “I think about him every morning when I wake up,” Alexander says. “Any day you can be gone, so I appreciate every day that I wake up. Every day I grind

and go get it. I just know he’s always there with me, so I feel like I’m undefeated.” Now, Alexander is looking to make a name for himself both on and off the field. He sat down with TAMPA Downtown Magazine to discuss expectations, community and nicknames.

You were selected for your first Pro Bowl this past season. Where were you when you got that phone call? I was at home. I didn’t know who was calling my

phone, but someone told me to answer it. When they told me, I was like, ‘Huh?’ I didn’t know if I was going to go or not. They called me, and I was like, whoa, for real? Are y’all playing with me? [laughs]. I got chills when I realized it was serious. I called my mom and dad, and everybody was happy. It was an amazing feeling. 38   SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 tampamagazines.com

are on the football field? The lion is like the king of the jungle. I’m a Leo, too, so that’s a big point. A gorilla is a mean animal. It doesn’t take anything. It’s a big, swole animal that will knock you out [laughs]. And a tiger is a finesser. He finesses. Whatever he wants, he’s going to go get it. That’s what I like about each of them.

How did you come up with your nickname LiTiRilla? It happened at pregame. We were on the field, and it just popped into my mind: LiTiRilla. I just said it in the camera. It’s the mix of a lion, a tiger and a gorilla. They’re all top dogs in the jungle. It just became a name, and now people are wearing my LiTiRilla shirts. It’s name branding. I’m having fun with it. That’s the mindset [going out on the field]. What are the aspects of each animal you’re trying to emulate when you

You’re getting a nice little salary bump this year thanks to an NFL policy that rewards young players who exceed expectations in their first few years of playing. When you entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick, did you feel like you had something to prove? It was a big process with the draft. Going fourth round and seeing people get drafted ahead of you who you knew weren’t better than you, I just felt disrespected the whole time. I told my mom, I know what I’m going to do. I’m going to go ahead, and I’m going to start. I’m going to do it because I have to. I just did. I came in with the mindset to start. That’s just the way I am. I always do everything right and just try to better myself. That was my mindset when I came in, and I got the job. Here I am now [laughs]. This May, you launched the Kwon Alexander Foundation to help kids in need. Why is giving back so important to you? Giving back is very important to me, especially for people where I come from. We didn’t have anybody to give back [when I was growing up], so every time I go home I give back. Kids like to see that. If they see a positive role model and you

come back and show your face, it’s a big thing to them. Especially seeing someone in the NFL, especially if they want to go to the NFL, it’s like a big thing for them. It makes me feel great to give back because where I’m from, it’s hard. When I go home I give whatever I have because a lot of people don’t have that much. The last two years you’ve participated in My Cause, My Cleats, one week each season where the NFL allows players to speak out on the cause of their choice with designs on their cleats. You’ve used it to speak out against gun violence, which is something very close to you. Why do you think it’s so important for figures like athletes to speak out on these issues? People need to see it. Especially with gun violence. I’ve seen a lot of gun violence, and it gets really critical at times, and scary. There are some things I just don’t like. Guns are just for our protection; that’s how I feel. They’re not to go around just to kill or rob. That’s why I want to stop gun violence, stop the killing, and bring each other together. Be successful instead of being nothing. We’re big guys to a lot of people, especially to kids. When they see that, they change their mindset as well. We try to preach that. All the other guys, they preach their causes and what they have going on. It’s a big platform for us to have kids and even grown people look at it and change their mindset. Changing gears: You have a lot of tattoos, including one on your back dedicated to your brother. Do you

have a favorite? How about one you wish you had never gotten? I got a couple of wish I had never gotten [laughs]. I got some when I was younger on my arm. I didn’t really have anything then, but now that I have money I can go to a real professional tattoo artist. Back home, you’ve got to get it how you can get it [laughs]. I have the one for my brother (see page 38) and one on for my son on my leg, so both of those are my favorites.

40   SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018 tampamagazines.com

You’re also very into fashion and launched a Li-Ti-Rilla T-shirt line. Who are some of your favorite designers to wear? I like a lot of designers. I like Rude. I like Balenciaga, Gucci, Versace, Saint Laurent. I can go on and on about this [laughs]. It’s all kinds of different things. Those are the main ones, but a lot of the dope designers are the ones who haven’t come up yet; the ones that are still kind of under-the-radar. I love it.

When you have some time off during the season in Tampa, where are your favorite spots downtown? I like going to Tampa Bay Lightning games at Amalie Arena. It be live. That’s probably my favorite thing to do downtown. To read more of this story, visit tampamagazines.com/kwon or pick up our sister publication, South Tampa Magazine.

Korean BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders Slow-cooker meals have always been a favorite of tailgaters everywhere. The culinary team at The Brass Tap took that concept up a notch by incorporating the hot Korean barbecue trend with a traditional pulled pork slider. Most of the hard work can be done the night before the game, with only assembly left once you hit the lot. 3 brioche slider buns ½ oz. melted butter 6 oz. pulled pork 6 oz. Korean BBQ sauce 3 oz. cole slaw 2 tbsp. chopped scallions 1 oz. cotija cheese Romaine lettuce (to taste) Pickle chips (to taste) 1. Prepare the pork ahead of your tailgate using your favorite slow-cooker recipe. Keep pork on low heat in slow cooker until you are ready to put together the sliders. 2. Place three slider buns on the cutting board, cut side up. 3. Coat the tops and bottoms of the buns with melted butter. 4. Place cut sides down on grill on low heat to toast. 5. As you shred the pork with forks, mix in half of the Korean BBQ sauce (or your preferred amount). 6. Transfer toasted buns to cutting board with cut side up. 7. Spread remaining BBQ sauce

on the insides of each slider bun. 8. Place sauced pulled pork (about 2 oz. each) on each bun. 9. Place cole slaw divided evenly on top of the pork on each slider. 10. Sprinkle chopped scallions over each slider. 11. Sprinkle cotija cheese over each slider 12. Top with romaine and pickle chips, if desired. 13. Replace the bun tops and insert picks to keep the sliders together before serving. Yields three sliders. Recipe from The Brass Tap Centro Ybor 1600 E. 8th Ave. E-113 (813) 241-0000

Mix up this Buccaneers-red drink before pregame, and perhaps you’ll inspire the team to take out their wrath on the visiting team. This is one of the seven gin-based biblical cocktails created by Eau Claire Distillery in Alberta, Canada.
