Every single day of his career, Dr. Kenneth Pages helps patients rediscover joy after years of struggling with depression, trying new therapies and antidepressants. They turn to him because Dr. Pages is renowned for his specialization in NeuroStar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS), the most aggressive, noninvasive way to treat major depressive disorder. It’s not magic. It’s a groundbreaking treatment that’s grounded in medicine, innovation and years of research. TMS treats depression by using magnetic fields to stimulate specially targeted areas of the patient’s brain. His results are astounding, with 60 percent of patients experiencing positive results and 40 percent achieving complete remission from depression. “When my patients first come here, they feel helpless, hopeless and lost,” says Dr. Pages. “Those who experience positive results with TMS have a renewed sense of hope and can picture a brighter future.”

GROUP PUBLISHER’S

LETTER face-to-face with Eddie DeBartolo Jr. He and his wife warmly welcomed us into their stunning Avila home. We enjoyed lunch and chatted about winning multiple Super Bowls and Mrs. DeBartolo’s new Carrollwood eatery, Sacred Pepper. It became clear during our lengthy conversation that part of the reason they’ve achieved so much and won over so many hearts (locally and beyond) is because they truly do treat people like family. Read more about his latest local efforts on page 28. Mr. DeBartolo revealed that one of his favorite things to read in the magazine was Tampa Confidential, our recurring segment featuring recommendations from local Tampa residents. It inspired us to expand this feature to our website — check it out at TheTampaMagazine.com/tampa-confidential.

Donut sampling, meeting local legends and getting my feet wet with a one-of-a-kind paddle boarding workout experience. Yep, it’s been a rough summer here at Tampa Magazine (as if I needed more reasons to love Tampa summers). We’ve worked hard and played hard putting together this special edition of our magazine, which features Tampa’s 10 Leading People (page 27), a group of men and women nominated by readers and local business leaders. This special group is made up of individuals who are putting their stamp on the local community and helping drive positive change, whether through sports, medicine, business or other areas. As part of this feature, I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down

Speaking of local sweet spots, did I mention that we ate a lot of donuts during the making of this magazine? Bacon. Sprinkles. Lucky Charms. Guava. We rounded up two dozen of Tampa’s tastiest donuts (page 12). After all that taste testing, I was in need of a serious calorie burn, which is exactly what I got at Urban Kai, a local paddle board shop that offers fitness classes. It recently moved its class location from Rick’s on the River to a new-and-improved spot off Gandy Boulevard. If you’ve never tried stand up paddleboarding, it’s a great, lowimpact way to work your core and enjoy our beautiful scenery. Along the way, I came across blogger Christina Valenziano on Instagram, and I just fell in love with her feed. The selfdescribed “food-obsessed, fitness enthusiast, peanut butter addict” curates a blog that aims to find a balance between food, fitness, health and happiness. We asked her to share one of her favorite summer recipes, and she gladly served up her popular Salmon Salad recipe with us (page 26). Tampa’s leaders shared some great pieces of wisdom with us, and I hope you find some inspiration in their positivity as we move into a new season. Enjoy the issue!!

Your home speaks volumes about your style and personality. Choose furnishings that stray from the norm and are just like you – utterly unique. This one-of-a-kind pillow from Spindle Fine Art began as a photograph. The design was shot on a black background, digitally manipulated and translated by hand onto Habotai silk. It pairs beautifully with Artisan Design’s striking chartreuse swivel chair. A sea glass lamp brings echoes of a beach paradise to your sitting area. The soothing palette and freeform artistic style of the painting “True Dawn,” an Ethan Allen exclusive, are hallmarks of works by the artist Shelton. Created with embellished glicée, this canvas in a narrow floater frame adds depth and a restrained ruggedness to your truly original space.

rban Kai, a fitness-focused paddleboard and kayak company, takes guests around the Bay for classes like Yoga on the Water, a core conditioning Kai Water Fitness class, the mixed land and water Warrior Zen Workout and a Better Balance Workout. “I love getting off the sidewalk and onto the water and just having the space to enjoy the environment,” said co-founder and owner Aimee Conlee. “It’s really pretty out there, especially when a dolphin will come right up by you as you’re paddling by.” Conlee started Urban Kai in 2010 with her husband, athletic trainer and board-sport enthusiast Mike. At the time, Tampa’s Downtown waterfront was still developing, but the Conlees recognized the potential for waterbased exercise classes early on. “Everyone kept asking where to get boards, but you had to drive all the way over to St. Pete to the beach to find anything. That’s when we decided to start Urban Kai.”

All classes at Urban Kai are taught by cross-trainers and yoga instructors certified for at least 1,000 hours completed. “We just think it’s important to know how your body works when you’re instructing people with activities [on the water].”

“The water by St. Pete Beach and on the east coast can have a lot of chop, so it can be difficult some times in the Gulf, but Tampa Bay is so calm a lot of times, especially on the backside of mangroves or in between buildings,” Conlee said.

Originally located on the Hillsborough River’s western shore near Rick’s On The River, Conlee said the boat traffic and narrow space made paddleboarding difficult. A year ago they moved Urban Kai near the entrance to the Gandy Bridge on Tampa Bay, a no-wake zone perfect for beginning a trip that could go as far as nine miles away.

Urban Kai’s Riverwalk location is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and Monday through Friday by reservation only. The Gandy location is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.

Urban Kai now has two locations – one by the Gandy Bridge in St. Petersburg and one next to the Sail Pavilion on the Tampa Riverwalk. Paddleboarders embarking from Downtown Tampa can explore along Davis and Harbour Islands. Across the bridge, you can visit the east coast of St. Pete and the Weedon Island Preserve.

Urban Kai is kid-friendly Visit urbankai.com to learn about classes and summer camp.

People who don’t have very much experience can still go out and have a good time.

HISTORY

REMEMBER THE TAMPA! Written By Derek Herscovici

S

eptember 26, 1918 – The Tampa, a United States Coast Guard Cutter ship, just finished leading a convoy of ships from the coast of Gibraltar to the Irish Sea and prepares to make its return journey in the Bristol Channel. The Tampa and its crew – 115 officers and men, many of whom were Tampa natives – would be lost, however, sunk by a German submarine torpedo as evening set on the Atlantic. It’s a story seldom told, but thanks to the joined efforts of a passionate and selfless group of Tampa activists the Tampa will finally have a memorial on the shores of the Bay it once called home. “Nobody’s heard of them because they’ve been forgotten, but they’re not going to be forgotten again,” said Nancy Turner, author of “The History of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, 1904-1979.” Turner has provided research and historical documents for a textbook on the Tampa written by local author Robin Gonzalez and funded by the Saunders and Duckwall foundations. On February 3, 2018 – 100 years after the Tampa’s sinking – the Tampa Bay History Center and other regional partners will dedicate a memorial along the Riverwalk to the ship and its crew lost at sea.

USCGC Tampa

Oddly enough, this story doesn’t begin with the Tampa, but with the Miami. Launched out of Virginia on February 10, 1912, the Miami was the latest in a long line of “cutter ships” built more for speed than cargo and was used to catch smugglers and pirates during the 19th century. The Miami’s first job was iceberg scouting in the north Atlantic Ocean, a task made more important with the recent sinking of the Titanic. When it wasn’t mapping ice flows, the Miami was a beloved dockside fixture in Key West and Tampa. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service was joined with the US Life Saving Service to form the United States Coast Guard; less than a year later, the Miami was rechristened the USCGC Tampa and redeployed along the Eastern Seaboard. Falling under US Navy jurisdiction at the start of the nation’s entry into World War

It was good at its job, too. In 11 months, the Tampa escorted 18 convoys totaling 350 ships and lost only two, averaging over 3,500 nautical miles a month. Though it fired its guns a few times, its only real encounter with a German U-Boat proved to be fatal. Using German military records, scholars traced a log entry from that day stating “submarine UB-91 spotted the Tampa entering the Bristol Channel, submerged and fired a torpedo into the ship’s stern around 8:15 p.m.” The strike was not fatal, but as water filled the ship, its stockpile of depth charges reached detonation depth and exploded. There were no survivors.

dy’s em o b o N “ of th ve e h arudse theyn’ , but becaforgottegoing beeney’re notgotten th be for .” to again

The death of all 131 aboard remains the largest single loss of life in US Navy history. There are memorials to the crew in Arlington National Cemetary, at Brookwood American Cemetery in England and even on the coast of Gibraltar, but not in Tampa.

Turner, Gonzalez and the other dedicated Tampa activists plan on changing the ending of this story for good.

I, the Tampa underwent heavy rearmament to prepare for combat. It retained the speed of a cutter ship with greater firepower, perfect for protecting convoys of cargo ships sailing along the western coast of Europe.

“Kids will go home and they’ll tell their parents and grandparents and their whole families,” Turner said. “The story of the Tampa won’t be lost to history anymore.”

EDDIE DEBARTOLO JR. A local legend talks championships, camaraderie and leaving a legacy of leadership

As owner of the San Francisco 49ers, DeBartolo won the Super Bowl in 1982, 1985, 1989, 1990 and 1995. He holds the record for the owner with the most wins over the shortest period of time - just 14 years. Here, he shows off his five Vince Lombardi trophies, which he keeps in his home.

Leading People

TM: You and your family can choose anywhere you would like to live. Why Tampa? Eddie: My father spent a lot of time developing shopping centers in Florida. We had a personal relationship with Mayor Greco, who also worked for us, and when we were deciding between Orlando and Tampa, he convinced us to move to Tampa. It’s been home since 2000, and we wouldn’t live anywhere else.

 Eddie DeBartolo Jr. sat down with Tampa Magazine group publisher Shawna Wiggs at his home in Avila.

LEADING THE CHARGE

From San Francisco Bay to Tampa Bay, Eddie DeBartolo Jr. has carved a unique place in the hearts and minds of people across the country. Today, he’s back in Tampa tackling local development — and he has no plans to stop anytime soon. TM: On February 6, you were inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In earlier interviews you report being in a state of shock at having been inducted. What’s the feeling like now that it’s settled in a bit?

Eddie: I’m still in shock. It was an amazing and unbelievable day. I was totally humbled. Going back to 1977 and taking the team over and going through the seasons, some good some bad, I never thought this would happen. But Bill Parcells called me when I received the notice, and he said, ‘Eddie, let me tell you something. This is one club they can’t throw you out of.’

TM: How did they notify you?

Eddie: I was in Montana, and they had a meeting in Canton. I got a call from David Baker, who’s president (of the Pro Football Hall of Fame), that I was the single contributor candidate. They had their meeting the day before the Super Bowl in San Francisco. That was a crazy day because of what they had you do. They put (the 15 candidates) in separate rooms, and the only way you knew whether or not you were elected was if David Baker came to your room with a camera crew. I waited with my wife in the room. Just before 4 p.m., I heard some commotion and a knock on the door. I looked out and it was him. I opened the door, and he grabbed me and hugged me and said, “Congratulations.”

TM: You presided over the 49ers during arguably the greatest dynasty in NFL history. What was the atmosphere like in San Francisco at that time?

Eddie: Well, we had some tough times. Back in 1977, ’78 and ’79, we didn’t have a great team. And in 1979, we had a double murder in the city. A mayor was murdered and another city official, and the city was a total mess. At that same time, that year I had hired Bill Walsh to be my coach. And in 1980, we also had a difficult year. Then, in 1981, we started putting everything together with the draft picks we had gotten from ‘79, like Joe Montana and Ronnie Lott. We had an amazing year in 1981 that none of us expected. We were 13-3 and we went to the playoffs, played the Giants, then the Cowboys and went on to frigid Detroit and played Cincinnati in the Super Bowl and won that, and that kind of got the ball rolling for the success of the team.

TM: I’m assuming it helped heal the city a little bit.

Eddie: Totally. The city was still reeling from everything. George Moscone was the mayor, and he was a wonderful man. When he passed away, Dianne Feinstein became mayor. (After the Super Bowl), we went back and had a parade, and I think she estimated attendance at well over one million. To this day, when I talk to her, she really thinks it kind of solidified and brought the city back together.

TM: The 49ers won five Super Bowls with you as the owner. Is there a particular one that was most special or stood out to you?

Eddie: Wow. I guess the first one was always the surprise. But probably the Super Bowl in ’95, the last one. My dad had just passed away. That was probably the one that meant a lot. We had a different quarterback. It was the only Super Bowl Joe didn’t play in, Steve Young played in it. They were all so special, but that one, probably because of my dad dying just a month or so before, that game probably meant the most.

 DeBartolo keeps his copy of “XL Super Bowl The Opus” on display in his home. It details the first 40 Super Bowls, including DeBartolo’s five wins, and is the largest book ever written about football.

TM: As far as the team goes, you were known to travel in style, and you treated them like a family. Was that intentional and do you think it was a driving force in their success?

Eddie: Well, that all started in Youngstown, with our company and the way my dad started years and years ago back in the ’40s when he got into business. He always treated all of his employees like they were members of the family, whether someone was sick in their family or there was a birthday or a baby or something. We had a lot of employees: 700 almost in Youngstown and another 11,000 throughout the country in our malls and race tracks. I think that got instilled in me, the way you treat people is the way you want to be treated. I think I carried that on into San Francisco. We did things differently with the players. I never got involved in contract negotiations; I always let the general manager or Coach Walsh do that. My relationship with the players was more a personal relationship. We weren’t that different in age—me and the players—at that time, so we really became close.

TM: Do you still keep in touch with any of them today?

Eddie: I get groups together about four times a year. Last week, eight of us went to Vegas for two nights. I had all my guys — Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Roger Craig. We spent two nights in Vegas, and we were just like a bunch of old giddies, just talking and reminiscing. I stay in touch with as many people as I can. We have some players who have gone through bad times, and I just stay in touch with them. I guess that relationship never stops.

TM: Were there any parallels between running a successful business and a successful football team?

Eddie: I think so. I think you have to have consistency, and we tried to do that. We obviously did it in business. My dad was an amazing businessman and a great father. I think I tried to carry that into my ownership with the 49ers, to be consistent with the team and the front office. I think we were successful in doing that – it helped keep everyone on the same track.

TM: Your real estate business was largely built on shopping malls. Describe what that business is today.

Eddie: It’s different today. There aren’t that many malls being built. Getting the approvals--it’s almost impossible. It takes years. If you have a piece of property, before you can start a mall, even if you have everybody in place, it’s seven to eight years. Right now, we’re going to open a mall in Hawaii in October. It’s going to be one of the few that are going to open this year. It’s going to be a large mall, it’s about 1.5 million square feet. But it’s changed because it’s just way more complicated.

TM: Any proposed projects in the Tampa Bay area you want to mention?

Eddie: Well, we have Georgetown (a luxury housing development between Westshore Boulevard in South Tampa and Old Tampa Bay), which is a great piece of property. We’ve already been working on all our approvals and everything. I think it’s probably the last really, really good piece of property.

TM: I heard something about “the best views of downtown.” Does that mean it’ll have high-rise towers?

Eddie: : I think it’ll be multi-use. We haven’t really decided exactly what it’s going to be, but it’ll be housing, multi-use high-rise and some commercial.

TM: Employment opportunities and excitement about things happening downtown are leading to a lot of positive headlines. Do you share that enthusiasm?

Eddie: Jeff Vinik is a really good friend of mine, and I can’t say enough about him. He’s an entrepreneur with great, great foresight. Tampa’s lucky to have him. Hopefully I’m going to be able to do something with him. I just think he’s done a phenomenal job. His plans are great. He’s going to reinvent downtown. I remember Tampa years ago – when it was vibrant downtown, we had department stores. We had Maas Brothers, Belk Lindsey and different stores. I’ve always said I think downtown needs commercial. I think Jeff has a plan that’ll help spur other little stores, more restaurants. Tampa is a great city.

TM: In your view, what are some crucial things city leadership needs to do to keep that positive momentum going?

Eddie: Work closely with them on entitlements. You don’t have to give the store away, just make it easier. You try and cut through the red tape so you can get these things done — you just can’t wait eight or 10 years anymore to get these things started. It takes long enough to build them. Make it easier to do the developments.

TM: You’ve co-founded the Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School in Tampa with Derrick Brooks. What was the motivation behind building a college-style high school?

Eddie: Derrick. We’ve been friends since I moved down here. “He came to me, and he said, ‘I have an idea. Let’s do a high school,’ and he gave me his thoughts and his ideas.” I was totally on board. We’ve gotten A ratings for the last 6 years. We’re trying to really make this a true high school, with a football program and a football stadium. The girls’ basketball team did phenomenally. I went to the opening baseball game of the season, and they’re doing great. Our principal, Kristine Bennett, is the best. I just can’t say enough. Derrick spends way more time there than I do. He’s looked up to by everybody. It’s just nice to be able to see that these kids are getting really, really good education. And lots are going on to college.

TM: Finally, where do you tell out-of-town guests they have to go?

Eddie: When I’m downtown, I go to Malio’s. I go to Carmine’s a lot. I have to say my wife and everybody has done a phenomenal job with our restaurant. It’s called Sacred Pepper, and we opened on April 19. I think it’s going to be something new to Tampa. Something different.

1993 national college football champion. First round draft pick. 11-time Pro Bowler. 2002 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Super Bowl XXXVII Champion. First ballot Pro Football Hall-ofFamer. With a career like Derrick Brooks’, one could understand the need to take some time off after retirement. But retirement for Brooks has been anything but quiet. In 2007, three years before officially retiring from the NFL, Derrick Brooks Charities partnered with the Eddie DeBartolo Family Foundation to create the Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School, providing private school-style curriculum tuition free. Brooks said his main inspiration was keeping troubled students from getting “lost in the numbers” of a public school environment. “If I could help that same young man or woman in a smaller, intimate environment become an A or B-student and challenge them to look at colleges and post-secondary education, that’s what I wanted to do,” he said.

DERRICK BROOKS Former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Pro Football Hall-of-Famer President, Tampa Bay Storm

Brooks became team president and part owner of the Tampa Bay Storm arena football team in 2011. Though he has received almost too many awards to count, Brooks prefers not to rank them, thankful for the recognition he received in that particular moment. But there is one achievement above all others that he still finds hard to describe: Super Bowl XXXVII. “For the franchise to start 0 and 26 to win a championship, those things are hard to find words for when you’re in the moment,” he said. “It changed the scope of Tampa. To go from being kind of a participant to being a world champion, it changed how people look at Tampa Bay.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people

A third generation Tampa native, Toni Everett started The Toni Everett Company more than 35 years ago. A real estate development had stalled, and the company asked Everett to help them reignite the project. Relying on her background in advertising and marketing, Everett turned the project into a success for everyone. “I was told I was a natural at sales, but I really enjoyed doing it,” she said, “I was having fun.” Everett developed the two per floor, one per floor condo concept for the Bayshore Regency, which has now been copied all over the world, and she was the first person to execute a $1 million condominium sale on Bayshore Boulevard. Everett’s touch can be felt throughout the Tampa Bay real estate market. In addition to high-end luxury home sales and other projects throughout the area, The Toni Everett Company is currently working on the mixed-use development Georgetown on South Westshore and The Aquatica, a high-rise on Bayshore Boulevard. Everett tells her employees to, “Be natural, be consistent, and be persistent.” I love working in real estate because I love working with people – both the buyers and the sellers,” Everett said. “They become friends. They become part of your family.” Outside of real estate, Everett is very involved with the Tampa community especially charities involving children, the arts and medicine. Dale Gordon was always interested in the film and digital media industry. A class at the University of South Florida piqued her interest in the logistics of what goes on behind the scenes before the first camera begins rolling, and an internship with the Palm Beach Film Commission had her completely hooked on the business side of movie magic. Responsible for promoting Tampa and Hillsborough County to media moguls, she has put Tampa on the radar with directors and producers from all over the world, bringing more than 561 productions to the area that have had an economic impact of $26 million and employed hundreds of locals. The crime drama “The Infiltrator” starring Bryan Cranston and Tim Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” were recently filmed here.

DALE GORDON Executive Director, Tampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission

“Getting ‘The Infiltrator’ to film here was of tremendous significance to the Tampa film community,” Gordon said. “We were about to lose them because other cities were offering them huge incentives, but the Tampa community really stepped up. Everywhere I went, everyone I talked to said, ‘yes,’ to help bring the movie here. Hillsborough County gave a local cash incentive, the most aggressive offer in the state of Florida. Port Tampa Bay offered free production offices. Epicurean offered discounted hotel rooms. Mayor Buckhorn provided police officers for security. It was a true community effort that will reap tremendous rewards, not only in the initial economic impact, but also due to the added value of tourism and exposure for the area.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people TAMPA MAGAZINE 33

Senator Arthenia Joyner has spent her life standing up for what she believes and paving the way for others. Born in Lakeland, she grew up in a time of segregation and has always been active in civil rights issues. “I live by the Bible quote from the book of Luke, ‘To whom much is given, much is required,’” Joyner said. “My father owned a successful business on Central Avenue, and he always told us, as we were growing up, that God had been good to us and that he expected us to give back – that we had an obligation to do so. I’ve loved being in the Florida legislature and being an advocate for women, minorities, struggling families and the underserved, as well as working to reform the criminal justice system.” Joyner, who is returning to private practice after 16 years in the legislature, was the first African American female lawyer in Hillsborough County. When she graduated from Florida A&M University’s College of Law she could not find anyone in the legal profession willing to hire an African American woman, so she opened her own practice. “In 2019 I will have been practicing law for 50 years, Joyner said. “Right now I am the longest-practicing black female attorney in Florida. I intend to continue my work as an attorney, and within my community, and to serve in private life with the same passion and dedication that I committed to public service.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people

Brian Lamb hasn’t played basketball since the early 1990s, but the resiliency and responsibility he learned on the court as a point guard for USF prepared him for a career that continues to reach new heights. Preparation and commitment to excellence propelled Lamb through the ranks of Fifth-Third Bank to his current role as President and Chief Financial Officer for all of North Florida. “Set goals, stretch yourself, put a plan in place to achieve those goals, inspect that plan frequently and be sure you surround yourself with great people that can be brutally honest about your performance so you can be a better version of yourself,” Lamb said. Lamb readily admits he began his post-USF career with Tampa Electric Company at the very bottom of the totem pole.

“My very first job when I was at TECO was a meter reader,” Lamb said. “I got in the truck, read the meters and ran from dogs half the time. I underestimated the dogs, by the way. But it was a good experience.” Within six years of entering TECO, Lamb had ascended to Director of Financial Services before leaving for Fifth-Third Bank in 2008. As CEO of Tampa International Airport during one of its largest growth spurts in history, Joe Lopano could easily take credit for its achievements, including a 100 percent increase in international travel since 2010, expanded local dining options and added terminal space, but he doesn’t see himself that way. “I just show up to work each day hoping to build on the legacy of the guys who came before me and made Tampa International Airport so great,” Lopano said. The former president of the Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport for 14 years, Lopano arrived at Tampa International in 2011 and has quickly immersed himself in the community. In 2015 Lopano was named Visit Tampa Bay’s “Ambassador of the Year.” One of Lopano’s proudest achievements is raising money for United Way through its 5K on a TIA runway. “Last year we were named one of United Way Suncoast’s Most Generous Workplaces for the second year in a row,” Lopano said. “I’m so proud that we’ve been able to assist people in our community who are in need.” A graduate of Pace University, Lopano was torn between a career as a photojournalist and one in business. While photography is still his creative outlet, he was never shy about his ambitions, even in an entrylevel position at Pan American Airlines. “When I worked in the Pan Am mailroom I showed up every day wearing a threepiece suit with the Wall Street Journal under my arm and told everyone I would be in management one day.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people

Lutton’s interest in health care began when she volunteered at her local hospital as a teen and continued after her graduation from the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA when she started working at the University of California, Santa Diego Medical Center as their quality manager. “The quality manager position was a great introduction to hospital management because I got to see how all the departments worked and interacted together,” Lutton said. Under Lutton’s leadership, St. Joseph’s - along with its sister BayCare hospitals have consistently earned the highest patient satisfaction ratings in the Tampa area. “We have a wonderful group of professionals at St. Joseph’s dedicated to high quality, compassionate healthcare,” she said. “Everything starts with our team members and their interaction with and ability to listen to our patients.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people

“You can get ten times out of life what you put in, but you have to put in first,” said Rick Thomas, founder and president of Thomas Financial. “We consider that a big issue, that you’ve got to put back into the community that you live in; once you do that you keep getting back tenfold.” Thomas knows a thing or two about putting into the community. For more than 40 years, Thomas Financial has helped hundreds of families and businesses plan for the best and prepare for the worst through insurance packages, steadily growing as a Tampa institution. Today, Thomas Financial provides stability and comfort to a wide range of clients, some of whom have maintained accounts across generations. “Our business, because of the nature of the business, has helped this city grow economically,” Thomas said. “We’ve helped families who have hundred-year-old businesses stay open, and that’s something that we take a lot of pride in. We were there to help do that. If anything, that’s one of the more gratifying parts of this business.” Full Q&A online: thetampamagazine.com/ 10-leading-people

Growing up with a father in the military, Heather Weber lived in many different cities in the U.S., Europe, and Central America before settling down in Tampa. Her grandfather, who was a friend of Walt Disney and created the first plastic Cinderella doll, sparked her interest in business by talking to her about Disney stock when she was young. At the age of 12, she taught herself Spanish. At 16, she trained and competed in karate matches with U.S. Special Operations soldiers. It is that same dedication and drive that has helped her excel in wealth management. “Every day I try to add value and help people,” Weber said “I have witnessed first hand the benefit that financial planning can have in a family’s life. Rays on the Runway

The Children’s Dream Fund partnered with the Tampa Bay Rays for the 10th annual event Rays players, including Evan Longoria, Matt Moore and Kevin Kiermaier, and their wives and girlfriends joined with seven “dream children” on June 29 to show off the latest fashions from Dillard’s on the runway. The event, held at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront, raised $125,000 for the Children’s Dream Fund, which grants wishes to children in West Central Florida coping with lifethreatening illnesses. All seven of the children who walked the runway have had wishes granted by the Children’s Dream Fund – from Disney Cruises to trips to the Bahamas and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Since it began 10 years ago, Rays on the Runway has raised over $700,000 for the charity.

Rugged Maniac

Thousands Descend on Dade City More than 6,000 people attended the Rugged Maniac 5K obstacle race at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City on April 23. Adrenaline seekers from across the region tackled 25 challenging obstacles spread along a three-mile off-road course, including underground tunnels, trampolines, warped walls, balance beams, and a Maniac favorite – a 50 foot water slide. The daylong festival also featured a variety of entertainment including music, mechanical bulls, adult bounce houses, beer, food, and exhibition booths. This was the third year the event has been held in Dade City. “Little Everglades Ranch is an absolutely gorgeous facility for an outdoor event,” said Rugged Maniac COO Rob Dickens. “Its grassy lawns, ancient oaks, and beautiful water features make it a very scenic venue. Of course, our success is also due to the large number of people in the Tampa Bay area who love doing fun outdoor activities like Rugged Maniac. We plan on making the festival an annual tradition for many years to come.” All Rugged Maniac events support the American Cancer Society. This was the first stop of Rugged Maniac’s 2016 North America Tour.
