You don’t need a thermometer to tell that summer’s back. Maybe it’s global warming, or maybe spring took the year off, but one way or another beach season is here. Cool off with these island-inspired cocktails, served at some of the Bay area’s best lounges on or near the waterfront. And don’t worry about the weather – rising tides mean more beach for all of us.

Toasted Churrolada – Terremoto Churros tequila mixed with an in-house blend of coconut cream and pineapple and topped with a toasted almondcinnamon rim will keep you warm after sundown.

Singapore Sling – A classic updated for modern times, mixing Martin Miller gin, Benedictine liqueur, Rothman & Winter cherry liqueur, Tippler’s orange liqueur, lime juice, pineapple juice, grenadine and Angostura bitters.

Beach Berry Coconut – Coconut, rum, strawberry purée and fresh coconut water served “islandstyle” in a Thai fresh coconut. Because we heard you like coconuts.

TURTLE TIME From now through September, Florida beaches have some very special guests

Written By Marcy Sanford | Photography By FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute

L

ast year more than 128,000 sea turtles came to Florida to nest. During turtle nesting season, you might see a leatherback or green turtle coming to shore, but loggerhead turtles make up about 70 percent of the sea turtles that come to our beaches each year to lay their eggs. While most go to beaches on the East Coast and in South Florida, loggerhead nests have been recorded at Anclote Key and Honeymoon Island and all along the Clearwater and St. Pete beaches. Anne Meylan, senior research scientist with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission, says Fort De Soto Park, Egmont Key, Cabbage Key and Shell Key are also popular spots.

According to Meylan, Florida is one of the most important places in the world for loggerhead turtles, but many encounter problems after they’ve traveled hundreds of miles to get here. “Our beaches are very important to the survival of the species,” said Meylan. “You should never disturb a sea turtle on the beach. One of the biggest problems we’ve had lately is people using their cell phones to watch or record turtles. The bright light on the phone bothers and disorients them.” “It takes about 30 years before a loggerhead turtle is ready to reproduce,” she said. “The turtles that come to our beaches may have traveled from as far as the Yucatan, Cuba or the Dominican Republic.” It is up to humans to make sure beaches are welcoming when these gentle creatures come to visit. First and foremost, never bother a turtle on the beach or its nest. Next, be a gracious host by keeping the beach clean and free of debris and trash, removing patio and beach furniture at night, and turning off outside lights. If you think you’ve spotted a nest or a turtle that is hurt or in distress, call the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission at (888) 404-FWCC (3922) or #FWC

Need a little inspiration, or been a while since you’ve picked up a paintbrush? In-house artists can help you with samples and step-bystep instructions. One surprising benefit? HEALING THROUGH ART

Bernadette Blauvelt, B Creative Painting Studio, Owner Bernadette Blauvelt has firsthand knowledge of the therapeutic benefits of painting. On April 4, 2010, her 12th wedding anniversary, her husband Chris was wounded in combat while stationed in Afghanistan. “Chris was in the hospital for a year and I would travel with our three young children to D.C. to visit him as often as possible,” Blauvelt says. “I had always been creative but found painting to be an outlet for my stress.” Blauvelt wanted to be able to help other veterans and their families through difficult times and has held classes and retreats for wounded warriors and their spouses since she opened B Creative. “I opened the store for love and to provide therapy to those in need,” she says. “To be able to lift stress off someone’s shoulders for an hour or two is reward enough.”

A FAMILY LAW TEAM FOR FAMILIES Michelle Brinner A partner of Older, Lundy & Alvarez, Brinner has a unique skill set to help families dealing with divorce. In addition to practicing family and marital law, she also leads the firm’s appellate practice and is trained in collaborative law. “In my approach, I look at the family as a whole unit to try to meet the family’s needs without litigation if at all possible. If that is not possible, then I dig deep into the law to prepare the best case for my clients.” Her work ethic and responsiveness to clients is her way of helping families in crisis. “Divorce is one of the worst experiences someone can go through,” Brinner says. “If I can make that less traumatic, I will.”

Frances Martinez Martinez began her career as a criminal defense attorney and has years of experience in the courtroom. After seeing the family law issues that existed in her criminal cases, she made the natural transition to family law. “What I like best about family law is that you can provide actual solutions for people,” Martinez says. “If you can help parents figure out how to work together for their kids or you can give a spouse a system to support him or herself, it has real long-term, lasting consequences.” Martinez, originally from Puerto Rico, grew up in Tampa and is married with two kids.

Jennifer Meister Meister has a strong passion for child advocacy that developed over years of working in dependency law with children’s legal service, a background few family law attorneys have. “Many of the core issues overlap,” Meister says. “Whenever children are involved, finding a resolution in their best interest is a paramount concern.” Meister also assists families looking to adopt, a process she knows well as she and her husband are licensed foster parents who adopted twin boys. No matter the case, Meister connects to her clients. “My clients experience empathy, compassion, and competency,” she says.

MAKING TAMPA SMILE FOR OVER 35 YEARS

E

stablished in 1982, the familyowned Implant & Periodontal Therapy has served patients for over 35 years by using advanced, state-of-the-art technology to provide the most current and least invasive periodontal treatments possible in their three Tampa Bay area locations. All three doctors are leaders in the dental community. Dr. Richard A. Rasmussen Jr. is an international pioneer in dental implants, having trained in Sweden with the orthopedic surgeon considered to be the father of modern implants. Dr. Rasmussen is the only periodontist in the U.S. trained in the craniofacial applications of implants and leads the field in minimally invasive soft tissue and bone grafting protocols. “Dr. Rasmussen and his staff have a great attitude and demeanor that makes the overall experience better, and my gum surgery was 100 percent pain free, says patient Lou T. “I am a very happy patient.

Pictured (L to R): Dr. Matthew J. Rasmussen, Dr. Richard A. Rasmussen, Jr. (center) and Dr. Richard A. Rasmussen, III.

Also certified in IV conscious sedation, Dr. Matthew J. Rasmussen supplemented his dental school training with a general practice residency at the University Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where he gained experience with 3-D planning for implant reconstruction and computer guided surgery. His skills lend themselves to procedures like the Pinhole Surgical Technique, which treats tooth recession and is available at Implant & Periodontal Therapy. TOP DENTISTS

WHO DECIDES WHO IS A TOP DENTIST? Who picks the Dentists? In March, we mailed surveys to hundreds of licensed dentists in the Tampa Bay area. The list of active dentists was provided to us by the Florida Department of Health. If there was no clear winner in a particular specialty, we did not include it in this list. We asked the dentists to nominate their peers they believe to be the best in each specialty, then return the surveys in anonymous prepaid return envelopes or complete the survey through our secure online process. We then tallied the votes from those surveys to compile this list. Was my dentist left off the list because he or she does not advertise in TAMPA Magazine ? Absolutely not. Any dentist who is on the list and also advertising is purely coincidental.

Islands in the Stream The phrase “island time” is no joke in the Florida Keys. WRITTEN BY: McKenna Kelley | ART DIRECTOR: Scott Tennant

From the way the ocean waves flow gently over Key Largo’s coral reefs to the way each day in Key West slowly counts down to another beautiful sunset, time just seems to move a little slower on these islands. A trek to the Keys makes for the perfect road trip, or a great chance to put your boat through its paces, to uncover something new within state lines. In the following pages you’ll find four different approaches to seeing the Keys, all arranged by interests. No matter which way you go, you can’t go wrong.

The Studios of Key West features work from local and out-of-state artists

If You’re Artsy Key West The best-known Key is the cultural hub of the island chain. Each night, you’ll find artisans selling their goods at the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square (400 Wall St., Key West). Follow up an assuredly gorgeous Florida sunset with a show at the 75-year-old Waterfront Playhouse (310 Wall St., Key West) or an indie film at the Tropic Cinema (416 Eaton St., Key West) down the street. During the day artists in residence display their work at The Studios of Key West (533 Eaton St., Key West), where you’ll find the colors of Key West captured on canvas during June’s “Mango Madness” exhibition. Try an evening mixed with high-class sophistication and Key West tradition by pairing a South Florida Symphony Orchestra (Tennessee Williams Theatre, Florida Keys Community College, 5901 College Road, Key West) concert with a drink at Sloppy Joe’s (201 Duval St., Key West), one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite haunts. Honor his memory with a rum- and grapefruitbased Papa Dobles or a Hemingway Mojito. Summer is prime time for Key West’s cultural festivals. Through July 31, wander in the Key West Art Garden (Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden, 5210 College Road, Key West), or join some of your favorite mystery writers and true crime experts at the fourth-annual Mystery Fest Key West (June 16-18, DoubleTree Resort Grand Key, 3900 S. Roosevelt Blvd., Key West), celebrating the best in “whodunit” literature. 38 JUNE JULY 2017

in residence at The Studios of Key West each year

Stay close to the cultural district at the Marquesa Hotel (600 Fleming St., Key West), a renovated “conch” house just a block from the famous Duval Street.

Key Largo/Islamorada On your drive into the Keys, see a part of movie history on a cruise on the “African Queen” (99701 Overseas Highway, Key Largo). The boat has been restored since its use in the 1951 Humphrey BogartKatharine Hepburn film of the same name for in daily trips through the Port Largo Canals. One of the Keys’ best-known art events is the Morada Way Third Thursday ArtWalk (151 Morada Way, Islamorada). In addition to selling art and jewelry, artists and musicians perform on three separate stages throughout the island’s art district on the third Thursday of each month. Stay for the weekend at The Moorings Village (123 Beach Road, Islamorada), which features 1,100 feet of private beach and 18 villas. TV fans, take note: the secluded resort’s Blue Charlotte house serves as a primary filming location for the Netflix series “Bloodline.”

If You’re A Foodie Key Largo/Islamorada

In Islamorada, Chef Michael’s (81761 Overseas 1 Highway, Islamorada) lives up to its catchphrase, “peace, love and hogfish,” by serving up four preparations of the fish daily, while the rest of the menu changes depending on the day’s catches. Just up the road, Ziggie & Mad Dog’s (83000 Overseas Highway, Islamorada) is home to some of the Keys’ best steaks in a refurbished building that was once rumored to be a hot gambling spot for Al Capone’s associates. Guests at Cheeca Lodge & Spa (81801 Overseas Highway, Islamorada) are just steps from the top-rated Atlantic’s Edge. After a round on the resort’s 9-hole golf course, stop in for a black Angus filet mignon, or bring in your fresh catch for the chef to prepare in one of three ways. Alternatively, grab a light bite and cold or hot sake at the resort’s Nikai Sushi Bar & Restaurant.

Key West The island’s signature fruit will be feted with a key lime cocktail sip-and-stroll and pie sampling at the annual Key Lime Festival over July 4th weekend (July 1-4, Key West). After the festival, grab a meringue-topped slice at

Don’t pass through the first key without stopping for a slice of key lime pie from Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen (99336 Overseas Highway, Key Largo). The restaurant’s version of Florida’s official pie has garnered national attention for its ingredients, which, with the exception of the whipped cream, are completely homemade.

Hot Tin Roof, named for the Tennessee Williams play, overlooks Key West Harbor at the end of Duval Street

West) makes use of local yellowtail, crab and spiny lobster, while Hot Tin Roof at the Ocean Key Resort & Spa (0 Duval St., Key West) pours craft cocktails with names like “The Glass Menagerie” and “The Rose Tattoo,” inspired by the workof Key West resident Tennessee Williams.

Plenty of Key West restaurants offer waterfront dining, but few do so as romantically as Latitudes at the Sunset Key Cottages (245 Front St., Key West). The emphasis is on fresh seafood and an extensive wine list, but resort guests can also enjoy a complimentary rum tasting each afternoon. Two other waterfront Key West resorts are home to must-visit restaurants. One Duval at the Pier House Resort & Spa (1 Duval St., Key

 Hemingway wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” when he lived in this Key West home.

If You’re A History Buff Key Largo John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (102601 Overseas Highway, Key Largo) was the first underwater state park in the U.S. and is still one of the most visited. The park is three miles wide and 25 miles long and supports a living coral reef and hundreds of marine animals. Choose from scuba diving, snorkeling or taking a glass-bottomed boat tour to experience the reef’s ecosystem.

Lower Keys See where workers who helped build the Old Seven-Mile Bridge – formerly a portion of Henry Flager’s railroad – once lived on Pigeon Key (Mile Marker 45, Overseas Highway). Daily historical tours guide visitors to some of the island’s remaining homes as well as the still-standing piece of the bridge.

Key West’s maritime history. Learn more about this history at the Lighthouse Tower (938 Whitehead St., Key West).

Key West

The shadow of author Ernest Hemingway looms large in Key West, and nowhere more so than at Casa Antigua (314 Simonton St., Key West) – where he completed “A Farewell to Arms” in 1929 – and the Hemingway Home & Museum (907 Whitehead St., Key West). Each summer, Key West visitors and residents celebrate the legend with Hemingway Days (July 18-23), a festival that includes a fishing tournament, readings and a look-alike contest. Stay nearby at The Artist House (534 Eaton St., Key West) or Island City House Hotel (411 William St., Key West), two of the oldest homes-turned-hotels in the city.

Most of this key’s historic sites are centrally located in Key West’s Old Town. The Audubon House and Tropical Gardens (205 Whitehead St., Key West), built in the American Classic Revival style, is a great representation of the efforts to preserve Key West’s oldest architecture. The home was built by the wealthy Captain John Huling Geiger, and, with its lush palms and orchids, is now a popular wedding venue. Across the street, The Custom House (281 Front St., Key West) was once used as both the customs office for the port and as a naval office but it is now a museum that preserves

Cross the modern Seven-Mile Bridge into Big Pine Key for a bite at the No Name Pub (102601 Overseas Highway, Big Pine Key). The building originally opened as a general store in 1931, turned into a partial brothel in the ‘40s, then became solely a pub in the ‘50s. To get a taste of a time without constant

connectivity, stay at the Little Palm Island Resort (28500 Overseas Highway), located on a private island just off the nearby Little Torch Key.

Pictured above: Dave Hemingway (no relation to Ernest) won the 2016 Hemingway Look-Alike contest on his seventh attempt.

If You’re A Fishing & Water Sports Enthusiast Islamorada

Key West

You’ve found the mecca of sport fishing. Islamorada is known as the sport fishing capital of the world, and summer brings no shortage of tournaments for amateurs and professionals alike. Compete for cash and prizes in teams of three during the Islamorada Fly Dolphin Tournament (July 10-12), or take the family out to catch snapper, tuna, trout and more for the Islamorada Summer Classic (July 7-9, World Wide Sportsman, 114 Palm Ave., Islamorada).

Fishing novices of all ages are eligible to enter the Key West Fishing Tournament (March through November). Anglers must simply catch a designated fish in front of a witness, have it weighed at an official weigh station and enter the fish on an entry form. The weigh station at Sunset Marina (5555 Jr. College Road, Key West) is the closest to the private beach and spacious two-bedroom, twobathroom residences at the waterfront Hyatt Residence Club Key West Beach House (5051 Overseas Highway, Key West).

Stay just down the street at the Amara Cay Resort (80001 Overseas Highway, Islamorada) and take the complimentary

Mercedes shuttle to the marina or Lazy Days Oceanfront Restaurant (79867 Overseas Highway, Islamorada) to have your fresh catch prepared for dinner.

 This kingfish was the heaviest one

caught during the Key West Fishing Tournament’s kickoff tournament in April.

To go at your own pace, choose from offshore fishing, backcountry fishing or flats fishing and let one of the many captains with charters at Bud n’ Mary’s Marina (79851 Overseas Highway, Islamorada) guide you on your trip. On any of the charters, the captain will provide bait, tackle, a cooler and expertise – just let your captain know if you have any special requests for locations or fish you’d like to catch at least 24 hours in advance.

Richard Stanczyk, left, owns Bud N’ Mary’s Marina.

Key Largo Part of Pennekamp National Park, Molasses Reef is one of the most visited dive spots in the U.S. thanks to its gorgeous, complex coral reef system and plentiful caves and ledges. Nearby you’ll find Spiegel Grove (six miles off Key Largo, advanced divers only), a wrecked Navy ship that was sunk to allow a new reef to grow. Guests at the Key Largo Bay Marriott Beach Resort (103800 Overseas Highway, Key Largo) can pick up all their diving and snorkeling gear at the on-site dive shop. After your dive, refuel with fresh mahi-mahi prepared matecumbe-style at The Fish House (102401 Overseas Highway, Key Largo), one of Key Largo’s most popular holes-in-the-wall since it opened in 1982.

Southern Comfort Only in Florida must you go north to go south. WRITTEN BY: McKenna Kelley | ART DIRECTOR: Scott Tennant

The rich history and traditions of the American South are alive and well in Georgia, though an influx of business, art and innovation has helped cities like Atlanta and Savannah explode onto the national stage. Few states offer more depth and breadth of old and new culture than Empire State of the South.

For the state’s visitors, that means an almost overwhelming amount of things to see and do. In the next few pages, you’ll find a collection of sights, sounds and tastes specifically tailored by interest. Whether you like arts and culture, consider yourself a foodie or history buff, or just enjoy the finer things in life, Georgia will stay on your mind this summer.

If You’re Artsy Middle Ages spin on traditional dinner theatre. Movie and TV buffs shouldn’t miss the Atlanta Movie Tours (327 Nelson St. S.W.) to see where films like “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Blind Side” were filmed. For sci-fi fans, the tour company has four different “Walking Dead”-themed tours of sets from all seven seasons of the show, and it is creating a tour based around the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things.”

The city is home to two of the Southeast’s most renowned museums, and they’re just across the street from one another. This summer, catch the largest Andy Warhol exhibition in the U.S. at the High Museum (1280 Peachtree St. N.E.) and an inside look at the design of Luba Lukova’s social justice posters at the Museum of Design Atlanta (1315 Peachtree St. N.E.). Its sister museum, the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film (1600 Peachtree St. N.W.), is located just north of Midtown Atlanta. Spend the night at the historic, AAA fourdiamond rated Hamilton-Turner Inn (330 Abercorn St., Savannah) in Lafayette Square and take a day trip to Augusta for the Saturday Market (8th St., Augusta) along the Riverwalk’s Artist Row. A stone’s throw from Downtown Atlanta, Decatur is home to two James Beard semifinalists. Kimball House (303 W. Howard Ave., Decatur) was nominated for its bar program, which includes traditional cocktails (French 75), twists on old favorites (blood orange daiquiri) and absinthe service. Around the corner, regional best chef nominee Billy Allin has crafted a small, rotating menu that focuses on vegetables and just four main dishes at Cakes & Ale (155 Sycamore St., Decatur).

In Duluth, Chef Ri Liu’s Masterpiece (3940 Buford Highway, Duluth) doesn’t even have a website, yet his authentic Sichuan Chinese cuisine made him a James Beard semi-finalist. Similarly unassuming, Chef Brian So’s New American farm-to-table dishes at Spring (90 Marietta Station Walk N.E., Marietta) have won raves, including from the James Beard Foundation. 1

Atlanta The quality of Atlanta’s restaurant scene is proven in the city’s four 2017 James Beard Foundation Award nominees and six semifinalists. Miller Union (999 Brady Ave.) received the Outstanding Wine Program nomination while its executive chef, Steven Satterfield, won the award for Best Chef in the Southeast. Joining him in that category this year was Ryan Smith of Staplehouse (541 Edgewood Ave. S.E.). Finally, St. Cecilia (3455 Peachtree Road N.E.) serves up coastal Italian with a Southern flair in a dining room that won for Outstanding Restaurant Design. The Federal (1050 Crescent Ave.) was an immediate hit when it opened in late 2016 thanks to Chef Shaun Doty’s recreations of some of the dishes, like steak frites, that have earned him a following during his illustrious career as an Atlanta chef. Another favorite Atlanta restaurateur is Eddie Hernandez of Taqueria del Sol (1200 B-Howell Mill Road and 2165 Cheshire Bridge Road), a simple operation that offers just six kinds of tacos, four kinds of enchiladas and a handful of sides and specials with delicious results.

Savannah Travel guides, and even locals, will typically (and rightfully) direct you to the highly popular Olde Pink House (23 Abercorn St.) for elegant Southern cuisine. Get a similar experience a little more off the beaten path at Elizabeth on 37th (105 E. 37th St.). Open since 1981, the restaurant sits in a traditional 20th century mansion and offers a seasonal menu to guests each night. 2

Savannah’s most-talked about restaurant is likely The Grey (109 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.). Housed in a former Greyhound station, the restaurant marries high and low cuisine, resulting in dishes like sirloin and oxtails alongside a raw bar and duck liver. TAMPA MAGAZINE 45

number of city squares in Savannah

Savannah’s grid layout makes it easy to wander from square to square and take in sites like the fountain at Forsyth Park (Drayton St. and W. Gaston St.). At Oglethorpe Square, you’ll find the Owens-Thomas House (124 Abercorn St.), a historic English Regency mansion and one of the three institutions of the Telfair Museums. Open since the 1880s, the Telfair Museums also include the Telfair Academy (121 Barnard St.), a former mansion that features 18th and 19th century American and European art, and the Jepson Center (207 W. York St.), a contemporary art museum that houses works like the famous “Bird Girl” statue featured on the cover of the Savannah-set book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Book fans can tour the Mercer-Williams House (429 Bull St.), a Civil War-era home that served as one of “Midnight’s” main settings. Stay nearby in one of the luxurious guestrooms of the Mansion on Forsyth Park (700 Drayton St.) where you can visit the in-house Grand Bohemian Art Gallery and take a cooking class right in the restaurant’s kitchen.

Atlanta The linear Freedom Park connects two of the city’s preeminent historical sites. The King Center (449 Auburn Ave. N.E.), houses exhibits about the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. On the other side of the park, the Carter Center and Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum (441 Freedom Parkway N.E.) features an exact replica of President Carter’s Oval Office and the gifts presented by foreign dignitaries during his administration. Adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park (265 Park Ave. W. N.W.) downtown is the Center for Civil and Human Rights (100 Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. N.W.), which recognizes the civil and

For the Kids Annual fundraiser brings in big donors to brighten students’ futures

On March 25, 2017, the Academy of the Holy Names held their annual Black and White by the Bay Auction. This event raises money for the independent Catholic school to help with educational and co-curricular activities for students, faculty and staff. Proceeds are also used to support families through tuition assistance. The auction, held at the Grand Hyatt Tampa, had about 500 attendees wearing black and white and bidding on items such as gas for a year, Super Bowl tickets and tickets to the Rays v. Blue Jays home opener. The live auction raised $61,000, taking the total of the night to $400,000. The biggest surprise of the night, however, was when Anthony and Barbara Scarpo announced their donation of $1.35 million to the school. The parents of a fifth- and eighthgrader, they felt inspired to make the donation because of the opportunities granted to their daughters at the Academy. The theatre in the Bailey Family Arts Center will be named the Scarpo Family Theatre after the donor family.

s it a dessert? An entrée? Does it matter if it’s this delicious? Beach Bar and Restaurant’s Doughnut Burger combines the best of both worlds and adds bacon and caramel to boot. The festival-inspired burger has won over beachgoers looking for a substantial bite to go with their tropical specialty cocktails. Beyond burgers, Chef Joe Garcia is serving up a seafood-driven menu that features dishes like hog snapper, grouper sandwiches and seafood pasta. At each of the indoor/outdoor venue’s three bars you’ll find daiquiris, rum runners and piña coladas perfect for sipping at a waterfront table or cabana. Beach Bar and Restaurant features modern and airy nautical décor with light woods, white, tans and shades of blue. A bodega bar built inside the restaurant offers guests a separate space for drinking and dining, while windows around the interior let in the natural light and provide gorgeous, covered views of the water. For a refreshed brunch experience, try Beach’s Bottomless Brunch by the Bay from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Sunday, featuring a bottomless mimosa package, seafood bar, carving and omelet stations and Southern breakfast favorites, like shrimp and grits and chicken and waffles.

THE BIG CHEESE I

nspired by social media, Datz’s good friend Todd Sturtz and the restaurant’s house-made MacBites, the Cheesy Todd is the perfect mashup of feel-good, over-the-top Americana. Upon its addition to Datz’s menu in 2014, the Cheesy Todd became an instant hit. The burger, which features a 100% fresh ground chuck patty between two bacon-jalapeño mac and cheese “buns,” is now one of Tampa’s best-known dishes. It even hit the national spotlight when “Good Morning America’s” Jesse Palmer stopped by to try Datz’s unique creation last June. Imitations have popped up all over the social stratosphere, making appearances at Coachella and on Buzzfeed and Eater.com. Meanwhile, Bay-area diners continue to seek out the original, if only for the experience. Part of the fun of ordering the burger is determining how to eat it. Whether you bite right in or pull the whole thing apart, there’s no wrong way to do it. Fittingly, the Cheesy Todd has become one of the symbols of Datz’s annual food holiday. The restaurant created National Cheat Day, which celebrates eating your favorite, most decadent foods, in 2016, and it is now held each year on the fourth Thursday of January. Datz is known for entertaining foodies with inventive, indulgent dishes, like the Cheesy Todd, buffalo cauliflower and monkey bread, that put the focus on taste and comfort. Complete with creative cocktails and a massive craft beer list, Datz has become a wonderland for Tampa foodies.

AUBREIGH oN Anna Maria Island

Island Time

Advertising consultant and operations manager Aubreigh Roth is sharing her must-dos for a weekend on Anna Maria Island Aubreigh enjoying ice cream from Two Scoops in front of the City Pier

I

’ ve never gone a summer without visiting Anna Maria for at least one week. My grandfather began the tradition of taking my dad and uncle here in 1972, and my family hasn’t stopped going since. My fiancé has been going to the island about as long as I have, and it’s often our getaway spot for long weekends or a quick summer day trip. Here are my recommendations for the best of Anna Maria Island in a three-day weekend. Day 1 — Friday Leave work early, and go for lunch at the City Pier Restaurant. Browse the handmade jewelry for sale by the hostess stand while you wait, and try to get a seat near the back window to people watch. Order the fried grouper nuggets if they’re available or the blackened mahi sandwich and fries. After lunch, walk down the dock to Two Scoops for ice cream or to do some island shopping on Pine Avenue. My favorite boutiques are The Island Cabana, Pink & Navy and Bella by the Sea. Run in to Ginny & Jane E’s at the corner of Pine Avenue and Gulf Drive for to-die-for baked goods and artsy home accessories. By now it’s time to check in at one of the two-bedroom, two-bathroom LaCosta Condominiums on Bradenton Beach, where my family has rented every summer for 15 years. Take a quick shower and change for dinner. The drive back to the north tip of the island is worth it for a meal and the view at The Waterfront. If you prefer to eat right in the sand, the Sandbar has an excellent sunset

view. For a little island nightlife, go to the Kokonut Hut, a beachfront tiki bar. They

have live music and a great drink list, and it’s just a short walk from LaCosta.

Day 2 — Saturday

Gulf Drive Café

You can walk from LaCosta to Gulf Drive Café in less than 10 minutes. Order their Belgian waffles for breakfast like I did all the time when I was tiny. They’ll most likely seat you outside, where you’ll have another great view of the gulf. Catch some early morning rays after breakfast on LaCosta’s private beach. They offer free lounge chairs, so all you’ll need is a towel and sunscreen.

Duffy’s Tavern

Once the summer sun starts to get hot, it’s time for lunch. The free trolley is worth riding at least once, so hop on at the stop across the street from LaCosta and head up to the city of Anna Maria. For a great burger on the island, my pick is Duffy’s Tavern. Their hours are very random, especially in the summer, so I’d recommend taking the trolley here first. You’ll know when they’re open because there won’t be a single

My 5 Favorite Things

parking space available. My order is typically the Tex Burger with Lay’s Classic Potato Chips and a Blue Moon. If Duffy’s is closed, take the trolley to Tortilla Bay for some modern TexMex. With chips & guac, burritos and tacos to rival Chipotle & Moe’s, one dish is sure to fill you up. Now you’re ready to get more sun, and no time is better than late afternoon for water sports. I love renting paddleboards or Jet Skis at Coastal Watersports, just a short walk south from LaCosta beachside. For a little more risk, go parasailing with YOLO Adventures. I’ve seen sharks, stingrays and manatees from 50 feet above the water. For dinner, try Old Hamburg Schnitzelhaus, an unassuming little restaurant tucked away in a shopping plaza on Holmes Beach. As soon as you walk through the door, the décor, music and food will transport you directly to Germany. Gary, the German owner, is a perfect

host and personally oversees each table; he even welcomes and bids farewell to every party that enters his restaurant. I highly recommend any schnitzel dish and Warsteiner Pilsner for dinner and espresso with Black Forest cake for dessert. A typical night in Anna Maria ends with an after-dinner walk on the beach to watch the sunset – something you must do at least once while you’re here.

Day 3 — Sunday Wake up early and pack up your belongings – check out for LaCosta is 10 a.m. My family cannot leave Anna Maria without stopping to eat breakfast at Peach’s. I recommend any of their egg dishes with black coffee to perk you up for one last carefree day on the island. After eating, visit historic Bridge Street for a little last minute shopping and relaxation. They have cute boutiques, cafes and touristy shops to browse around in.

Anna Maria Island Nature • Sea turtles: Nests are fenced off and appear between May and October. The eggs typically hatch at night, and lights are not permitted on the beach. (See page 16 to learn more about sea turtles on Florida’s Gulf Coast.) • Manatees: High summer is manatee mating season, and you’re likely to spot a herd of them just off the shore during the day. • Ospreys: These birds can be found on Key Royale in the trees or on top of power poles searching for fish year-round. • Dolphins: They can be spotted almost anywhere – in boat wakes, close to shore after a storm, along the IntraCoastal and off the City Pier. • Stingrays: Do the stingray shuffle! The island has rays of all sorts; be sure to shuffle while walking in the shallows.

Off the beaten path with Christy Quinlan Partnership Manager, Skinade Tampa resident for 15 years

Favorite place for a girls’ night out: Hyde Park Village is a fun place for a GNO because it has great dining choices, and you can catch a chick flick after dinner at Cinébistro. Favorite date-night spot: Without hesitation, Bern’s Steak House. From the dining room to the dessert room, every experience here is perfection. Favorite spot to take guests from out of town: If they’re not from Florida, we always take guests to the water for a day of boating or paddle boarding through the mangroves – followed by a drink at The Getaway, of course! Favorite place for a power lunch: Pane Rustica because it’s in my neighborhood, and anything you order is delicious. My go-to is the Rustica Salad. Favorite place for special family occasions: Since my kids are 14 and 19, we have tons of options for a family fun day. Topgolf and Pinarama are always choices both kids easily agree on. Favorite local store: Surf Outfitter on Swann because I can shop for my son and daughter (as well as myself and my husband) in one stop. They have legit surf and beach brands, casual weekend clothes and the best swimwear around. Best place for a healthy meal: Fresh Kitchen. It’s healthy and delicious – and I don’t feel guilty ordering extra sauce. Favorite dive restaurant: Skipper’s Smokehouse is a super fun place with a rustic, laidback atmosphere, good food and live music.

Off the beaten path with C. Todd Marks Managing Attorney, Westchase Law & Title Tampa resident for 12 years

Favorite place for a night out with the boys: The original World of Beer is an old stand-by place in my neighborhood, and the Franklin Manor if I’m planning on a late night. Favorite date-night spot: Catch Twenty-Three in Westchase has a wonderful variety of food and drinks and is a great atmosphere with friendly customer service and lots of locals. Unlike most people, I like the “Cheers” atmosphere where “everybody knows my name,” and I’m not overly complicated about where I go to enjoy company. Favorite spot to take guests from out of town: Out-of-town guests love to be on the water, so I take them boating to Bon Appétit or the little shack on the pier with great grouper sandwiches, Olde Bay Café, in Dunedin. Favorite place for a power lunch: Because I have offices in Westchase and in Downtown Tampa, I like to meet in the middle at Cooper’s Hawk, where I’m a wine club member and the food is solid. Favorite place for a client dinner: If I’m trying to impress, of course Bern’s Steak House is at the top of the list for the unique Tampa experience. Favorite local boutique: Simply Elegant in Westchase has a wide variety of affordable gifts that my daughter enjoys, and therefore I’m hooked. Favorite waterfront restaurant: Armani’s is best for the view of the area and is easy to get to, but Jackson’s has a perfect view of downtown. TAMPA MAGAZINE 65
