For me, it’s always inspirational to meet successful businesswomen. Dr. Grandhige is an expert in minimally invasive surgeries to treat gastrointestinal issues, specifically GERD, hiatal hernias and Barrett’s esophagus. He completed his surgery residency and fellowship at Yale University and is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He founded the Tampa Bay Reflux Center in 2009 and regularly trains other surgeons in GERD procedures. What is GERD? Is it the same as heartburn? GERD stands for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Heartburn may be a symptom of GERD. When patients have GERD, their stomach contents reflux, or move up, into the esophagus, causing painful symptoms and damage to the delicate esophagus. Unfortunately, it is a common illness affecting over 60 million Americans. Left undiagnosed or untreated, it can lead to complications such as Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous change to the esophagus and esophageal cancer. How does someone know if they have GERD or if it is heartburn? Many patients are told they have GERD or reflux and are simply placed on medication for life; 20 percent of patients on lifetime antacids do not have GERD. We offer various tests such as pH testing and impedance testing, which can definitively prove whether patients have GERD. Other GERD symptoms include chest pain, regurgitation, bloating, asthma, cough, hoarseness and clearing of the throat. How do you treat GERD? At the Tampa Bay Reflux Center, we use a variety of endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic procedures that require very small incisions or no incision at all. We offer three surgical treatments, the LINX® procedure, the incision-less TIF® procedure, and robotic and
laparoscopic fundoplication, to stop reflux. These treatments allow patients to stop taking their medications, eat normally without special diets, and sleep flat in bed without having regurgitation. Does everyone who has GERD need surgery? No. Surgery is not for everyone. But it is important to realize that taking daily antacid medications, specifically proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), have been implicated in an increase in osteoporosis, vitamin deficiencies, colitis, pneumonia, dementia and chronic kidney disease. For those patients who have symptoms despite daily medications, are taking twice-a-day antacid medications, have side effects from the medications or are concerned about the long-term effects of a lifetime of medications, minimally invasive surgical solutions for GERD should be considered. Board-Certified Physician | HEIM REGENERATIVE MEDICINE CENTER After finishing his medical degree at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Heim completed his residency and obtained board certification in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulation. Dr. Heim has a special interest and extensive training in ultrasound guided regenerative injection techniques for injury and pain. He performs injection treatments with PRP (platelet rich plasma) and Stem Cells as well as a specialized injection treatment for nerve pain called Neuroprolo therapy. Stem cells are the cells in our body that have the ability to turn in to whatever the body needs — cartilage, bone, ligaments, etc. They decline in number and potency as we age. They also have very powerful signaling abilities that “sound the alarm” to the body that something needs to be repaired. This signaling starts a cascade of healing systems in your body to be turned on and go to work. What conditions are you treating with Stem Cell Therapy? We do a lot of orthopedic procedures; stem cells can help with any musculoskeletal injury or pain such as rotator cuff tears, arthritic knees, back and neck pain. There is also promising research that is ongoing with intravenous administration for conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. How are these therapies administered? In our office we primarily administer treatments through injections into areas of pain or damage such as knees, shoulders, and back. We also offer a micro-needling procedure for facial rejuvenation and hair restoration that can be combined with PRP (platelet rich plasma).
How long do results last? The goal of stem cell treatments is to repair damage and restore function. Some patients need only one treatment that can last for a year or possibly much longer. We expect an acute injury to be repaired and need no further treatment, while more severe conditions such as arthritis may need multiple treatments or periodic treatments to maintain benefit. The goal is to reduce or eliminate the need for surgery in some of these conditions. What’s important to note is that no treatment is a miracle in itself. One thing that separates Heim Regenerative Medicine is that we address the whole body with recommendations for diet, exercise or therapy, nutritional supplements and hormone balancing to create an optimal environment for health and recovery. In the worst cases, it’s both; they don’t work and they get these side effects. TMS offers a different approach that most of our patients find pretty refreshing.
Is TMS covered by insurance? TMS is very broadly covered by insurance, including government plans like Medicare and Tricare. I’ve been so fortunate to see more and more of my patients able to afford the treatment because of this. What are the first steps to being treated with TMS? It’s simple: just call and set up a free consultation with one of my staff. This is not a medical evaluation; it’s more of a prescreening process to explain TMS thoroughly, gather background medical information and determine insurance coverage. It allows for a streamlined visit with me, and from there, we can decide whether it make sense to move forward. How do you know if someone is a good candidate for Neurostar TMS therapy? At this time anyone who has major depression is a good candidate for TMS. For insurance purposes, patients will need to have tried and not responded to anywhere from one to four medications. However, we do offer self-pay rates for patients who don’t meet the insurance requirements. I should also mention that we have started offering TMS “off-label” for tinnitus, anxiety, migraines/chronic pain and PTSD and offer self-pay rates for these services as well.

he smokey eye. The cat eye. The smokey cat eye. They’re makeup techniques women the world over have been trying to perfect for decades. But if your smokey eye always ends up looking a little more like raccoon eyes, never fear: Beauty vlogger Jaclyn Hill is here. “For today’s video, I’m going to be showing you how to achieve the easiest smokey eye ever,” Hill says in the intro to her video “How To: Easy Smokey Cat Eye.” “If you follow along, I swear, you can do this.” You. Hill first became known for her engaging makeup tutorials on her YouTube channel, which she started back in 2010.

hat’s the mission of the beauty empire she’s building from her home right here in South Tampa, together with her business manager (and big sister) Rachel Barkules. Over the past five years, Hill has become one of the best known YouTube beauty vloggers in the game, with more than 4 million subscribers to her Jaclyn Hill YouTube channel — and that doesn’t even count her Snapchat and Instagram following. The former M.A.C. makeup artist has filmed more than 100 tutorials and videos on topics ranging from contouring and highlighting to her favorite drug store beauty buys. She’s launched a makeup line with BECCA Cosmetics, filmed a collaborative makeup tutorial with Kim Kardashian West, launched an eye shadow palette with Morphe Cosmetics that reportedly sold out in 48 minutes and is creating her own line of products.
Hill’s legal team, Barkules is the hidden force behind the camera, making sure appointments are made and kept and that Hill stays focused. “My sister, she’s completely different-brained than me,” Hill explains. “She is so analytical. Her brain just operates on numbers, like, 24 hours a day.” “If you’re on a road trip, there’s always that one person who wants to stop and get a drink every 10 minutes,” Hill adds. “[Rachel’s] the one who says, ‘No, hold it, we have to keep driving.’” The two have never looked back. “It’s like this perfect balance,” says Barkules. “We work really hard, but family always comes first no matter what.”
But she’s the first to admit that she couldn’t do it all without the help of her fellow beautyobsessed partner in crime, Barkules (who also happens to run her own fashion blog called “Life’s Candy Jar” and be a mother of two). “We’re like bread and butter,” Hill says. Barkules joined Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics in 2016, after Jaclyn offered her the job over dinner one night. Barkules didn’t hesitate, and she and her family made the move from Chicago to Tampa within months. From managing her calendar and dealing with contracts to coordinating with

he two spend their days working out of Hill’s house in South Tampa. And while on camera, her face is always made up to perfection, the sisters’ everyday life isn’t quite so glamorous. “It’s not so beautiful,” says Hill, laughing. “Everyone thinks that a day in the life of a fashion blogger or makeup artist or YouTube influencer is going to be so glam.” Barkules began her blog as a stay-at-home mom, so she now maximizes her time on her days off to maintain it.

“I work full time for Jaclyn, and then this past Saturday, I woke up, got myself ready, and I shot pictures for my blog for four hours,” explains Barkules. “I will use those pictures for the next 10 days, but people think that I look like that every day.” The reality is that most days you’ll find them both in baseball caps, yoga pants and workout clothes, collaborating on the soon-to-bereleased Jaclyn Hill Cosmetics, Hill’s own makeup brand. They’ve been working on it for nearly four years, and they’re thrilled to finally

s you’d expect, Hill’s reallife personality mirrors her on-camera persona. She’s confident but relatable. She’s spirited and unapologetically authentic. She talks about buttery foundations and lipsticks as though they were chocolate cake or the love of her life. She knows what she likes — and what she doesn’t. Barkules believes that “follow my gut” quality is what’s led to her successful brand partnerships. “She never sold out — ever,” says Barkules. “She never took a deal, no matter how much money they were offering, if it wasn’t natural and organic for her. She never did sponsorships that so many people would take [if it wasn’t a good fit]. She stayed true to who she is, and I think that translates to her audience.” From the outside looking in, it may seem like they’re playing with clothes and makeup all day, but this is much more
than a hobby. They’re working 16-hour days to create a brand, a business and a lifestyle. Together, these sisters are empowering people across the globe to look and feel great in their own skin. “I know business is supposed to be separate from emotion, but in my business, it’s not,” Hill says. “My passion is makeup and that’s also my brand and my business; I am so blessed that I get to have both in one.”

embers of the Tampa Bay Lightning practice one of the most unrelenting, physically challenging sports in the world. While their on-ice feats may be superhuman, according to the team responsible for feeding them, their food cravings are much more down-to-earth. “Taco day is the biggest hit,” says Antoinette DiGioia, Amalie Arena’s assistant catering manager, with a laugh. “From the team to the Lightning support staff, everybody loves taco day. Professional athletes — they’re just like us, give or take a serious amount of exercise. To keep the Lightning at peak performance levels, DiGioia works

closely with the team nutritionist to create the team’s protein- and vitaminrich menus, taking into account each player’s dietary needs. That means lots of steel-cut oatmeal, eggs, grilled chicken and salmon, and salad bars. “Athletes burn so many calories, so I have to make sure their food sustains them and that everything they eat turns into fuel,” DiGioia says. She then passes the menus along to executive chef Brent Lewis and his team, who spend about 12 hours in the kitchen on game days preparing the players’ breakfast, lunch, pregame snack and postgame meal.
“The Tampa Bay Lightning is probably the hottest thing in the NHL right now,” Chef Lewis says. “Getting the chance to be part of the team that feeds these guys is pretty amazing.” Even when they’re out of the building, the Lightning can still count on Chef Lewis. On days the team is practicing at the Brandon Ice Sports Forum, DiGioia transports the players’ breakfast and lunch from Amalie Arena’s kitchen to the rink. DiGioia says that players tend to keep their game day meal choices consistent, and she credits Chef Lewis’ staff for keeping tabs on who likes what. “We have a gentleman, Anthony, here who’s been the omelet chef for quite a few years,” she says. “As soon as he sees a player coming in, he’s already making their omelet and getting it prepared for them. The team likes familiar faces, and they build a rapport with the people they work with.” Minus a small incident with postgame scallops in the locker room (“I guess the aroma was just too pungent for them,” DiGioia says with a laugh), the team will eat just about anything. They love avocado, DiGioia says, and she scored a recent hit with Fresh Kitchen-inspired bowls. The culinary team even makes sure to take care of players still adjusting to life in the U.S.

“Chef John will make a special meal if he knows somebody’s from a different country to make them feel like they’re at home,” DiGioia says. “Players have to get homesick, especially when they’re coming from far away.” And what about players who just want a break from their strict diet? While he acknowledges with a nervous laugh that the team does indeed request cheat meals, Chef Lewis is hesitant to tattletale on the record. Finally he acquiesces — a bit. “There are a lot of grilled cheese requests,” Chef Lewis says, without naming names. Chef Lewis is much more willing to acknowledge the importance of one of Amalie Arena’s most unique features in his kitchen. Turn the page to get a peek inside the arena’s hydroponic garden. amalie arena’s n hydroponic garde Hidden from view from the general public, cucumbers, tomatoes, cilantro and other vegetables and herbs of all varieties grow in a hydroponic garden housed on a wooden deck beside the arena’s loading docks. These crops are used in just about everything Chef Lewis and his team prepare for the Lightning, from soups to the salad bar. “Having the garden downstairs lets us really do what we want with the menu, kind of on a whim,” Chef Lewis says. Amalie’s garden grows in 125 pots stacked on top of each other to allow water to drain from one container to the next. One gardener, who trained in hydroponic gardening before starting this project, tends to the plants, which can vary as the seasons change (see sidebar for some of the current crops).

What’s unique about hydroponic gardens is the growing method and the amount of both water and money saved compared with a traditional garden. Hydroponic plants grow in a solution of rich nutrients and water instead of soil. This nutritional consistency allows the plants to grow up to 25 percent faster and yield up to 30 percent more, reducing or eliminating the need to purchase produce elsewhere. The solution is pumped in to the top of the hydroponic towers via irrigation tubing, draining through each of the pots before the remainder (whatever has not been used up by the plants) is collected in a small container and returned via pipes back to three 300-gallon storage tanks. These tanks only need to be refilled about every seven to 10 days, potentially saving thousands of gallons of water. DiGioia says Amalie was the first sports arena to set up a garden of this kind, and venues across the country, including Boston’s Fenway Park and San Francisco’s AT&T Park, have introduced in-house gardens in recent years. She says that while there have been challenges to growing their own produce outdoors, like Hurricane Irma, the benefits are worth it. “This is a real garden, so we deal with the real elements,” DiGioia says. “But it makes a difference to use fresh produce. You can taste the difference in your food.”

But thanks to efforts from the city, the Tampa Downtown Partnership, local businesses and bike advocates, it’s easier (and safer) than ever to swap four wheels for two and get around town via bicycle. “We’ve been pushing to make Tampa bike-friendly for the last 20 years,”

The Future of Biking in Tampa The West River Project and Riverwalk Expansion As part of the city’s development of the Hillsborough River’s west bank, a second part of the Riverwalk will be built parallel to the existing trail. “Ideally, in 10 years, hopefully less, you’ll be able to choose the side of the river on which you walk, run or ride,” Mayor Bob Buckhorn told TAMPA Magazine earlier this year. The current Riverwalk will also be expanded north into Tampa Heights, past the newly revitalized Armature Works building, and east toward Channelside. Jackson Street In late July, a construction contract was awarded to begin work on a protected bike lane on Jackson Street downtown, the first of its kind on a state road. Billed as an “urban shared-use path,” the 10-foot-wide trail will be on the north side of Jackson Street from Ashley Street to Nebraska Avenue and run both ways for bikes. Cyclists will be protected from vehicles by a 4-foot-wide island. Work is expected to be completed next fall.
Biking buddies Local bike tours are a unique way to see a new side of your city and are perfect for cycling novices. “A fun group ride is a good way to get people comfortable biking,” the Downtown Partnership’s Karen Kress says. History Bike Tampa does bimonthly tours around Tampa focused on one region or piece of Tampa’s history. Past rides have included the history of public education in Tampa, prehistoric Tampa and even weird Tampa (historybiketampa.com). Florida Bike Tours hosts the Urban Restaurant Tour one Thursday each month (check floridabiketours.com for dates). Pedalers stop at four local restaurants around downtown, the Heights (Tampa and Seminole), Hyde Park, Davis Islands and Ybor City. The tour is capped at 65, so sign up quick. The company also offers a number of private tours and has a “create your own” option.
Did You Know? There are over 200 bike racks in downtown along with bike parking medallions on many parking number posts. “Now people have a safe place to ride and a safe place to park and lock their bikes,” says Kress.
Don’t have your own bike? Borrow one! The Coast Bike Share program has been in a hit in Tampa since it was introduced in late 2014. Hubs with bikes available for rent by the hour can be found throughout Downtown Tampa, the Channel District, Ybor City and Hyde Park. For frequent users, monthly and yearly plans are available (coastbikeshare.com).
