GROUP PUBLISHER’S LETTER

SHAWNA WIGGS Group Publisher

Each year our Restaurant Issue tends to be the most popular edition with readers. I’m guessing that’s because every resident in the 40,000 homes and businesses we mail to gets hungry three times a day (at least). As your community digest magazine, we are big backers of supporting local businesses, and we hope the food featured on the following pages motivates you to try something new. I know Davis Islands residents are sad to see Tasty Roots move, but it’s good news to see the organic food favorite, now called Daily Dose Organics, double in size at their new location on Bay to Bay Boulevard. This summer we’re also happy to welcome GrillSmith back to South Tampa with their new location on South Dale Mabry (formerly Grille One Sixteen), which is now open. This July we’re launching the inaugural TAMPA Sandwich Hunt. Turn to page 34 for some of the restaurants competing, and visit tampamagazines.com to vote on your favorite sandwich. The results will be announced in the next issue of South Tampa Magazine. For one in eight people struggling with hunger in the U.S., sometimes that answer is dependent on the help of the community around them. The charities listed on page 52 are doing their part to provide assistance and relief to those in need. We partnered with the restaurants advertising in this issue to donate a portion of the proceeds back to the community, and we hope to inspire you to donate your time or money to these great causes.

shawna.wiggs@tampamagazines.com Coming up next is the Back to School and Football Issue of South Tampa Magazine. The issue is filled with deals for our readers, and advertisers who play along get a special pricing discount. Call (813) 600-4000 or email for details. 12  JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

EDITOR’S LETTER

MCKENNA KELLEY Managing Editor

I’m not sure if South Tampa has an official slogan, but I would put that one up for nomination. This area’s sheer volume of restaurants serving almost every conceivable cuisine makes it a sort of nirvana for both foodies and the cooking-resistant (me). We started our annual Restaurant Issue to pay homage to South Tampa’s culinary community, and 11 years later it’s still an edition our readers and editorial staff look forward to. On page 36, we’re back with the latest installment of Best Thing I Ever Ate (Not in My Restaurant), where South Tampa chefs and restaurateurs share their favorite thing to eat at another local establishment and give some insight into their own kitchens. Speaking of kitchens, we got an inside look at one of South Tampa’s favorites on page 44. Wright’s Gourmet House owner Jeff Mount spoke with us about the recent expansion of the beloved spot and let us in on a few Wright’s secrets. Here’s one: When he learned he could pick a straw color other than clear or white, he chose lavender, the favorite color of his grandmother (and Wright’s founder) Marjorie. If you’re hungry for more local food content, keep it tuned to tampamagazines.com and @southtampamagazine on Instagram for new features and photos every week. That’s where you’ll also find more details on the upcoming TAMPA Sandwich Hunt 2018. See page 34 for more on that. As always, let me know what you’d like to see in these pages and on the web at mckenna.kelley@tampamagazines.com. Enjoy this issue!

GRAB UNIQUE THAI DISHES PLUS ASIAN NOODLES AND STREET FOOD at Ybor’s Asiatic Street Food & Noodle Bar. Matthew Ong wants to expand your understanding of Thai food. The owner of Ybor City’s Asiatic Street Food & Noodle Bar says most people don’t think beyond Phad Thai (an alternative spelling) when they consider southeast Asian cuisine. “Thai food features many unique dishes and varieties that you may have never had before or even known about,” Ong adds. Asiatic focuses on both Asian hawker — or street food — fare and traditional Thai dishes, like noodles and noodle bowls, roasted duck, barbecue pork, fish and seafood, and curries that incorporate a wide range of flavors to give diners an authentic culinary experience. Despite Asiatic’s embrace of classical cooking styles, the restaurant’s modern, laidback vibe fits right in with Tampa’s blossoming urban core, complete with a wine and sake bar.

The local outpost of the North Carolina-based brand hosts hands-on classes to create pieces you can actually use in your home, like plank signs, canvas hangings and tote bags, pillows, and picture frames. Workshop pros design and prepare the custom templates for each project — preselected during online registration — before class so guests can begin staining and painting their pieces with the provided materials right away. Classes run for about two-and-a-half hours and are BYOB, making for a perfect girls’ (or guys!) night out. “Tampa is such an awesome city with so much life,” Skelly says, “and I knew a place like this would be appreciated.”

A: We go to Clooney’s Wine Bar at Cheese Please for a glass of wine and The Facts of Life or Three Kings grilled cheese sandwiches. Q: Where do you go for weekend brunch, and what’s your go-to order? A: My daughter loves everything Japanese, so we go to Ichicoro Ramen on the weekends, especially after Tampa Bay Comic Con, which is coming up. I love the mushroom ramen, and my daughter loves the Japanese soda that you have to push the marble down to open. Q: Where do you like spending time outdoors in Tampa during the summer? A: My husband and I love to ride bikes on the Riverwalk and then eat lunch at Armature Works or the Columbia Café. Renting the EBoats from the Tampa Convention Center is fun, and we dock at Ulele for a snack at the outside bar. We like to go to The Getaway and paddleboard, and I’m excited to take kayaks out from the boat launch at the new Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park.

PAT & JUDITH O’NEAL

BEST THING Not In My Restaurant By Derek Herscovici & McKenna Kelley

JOE DIBARTOLO

G I EVER ATE Inspired by Food Network’s “Best Thing I Ever Ate,” we asked South Tampa chefs and restaurant owners where they go for a great meal when they’re not in the kitchen. From nostalgic classics to unique twists on a favorite, nothing was off the table.

Pat & Judith O’Neal

Owners, Sally O’Neal’s Pizza

Why is Pach’s Place your favorite place for breakfast, and what is your favorite dish? Judith: Pach’s is go-to comfort food for us. When the world is looking kind of grim, we go to Pach’s [laughs]. Pat: It has always reminded me of a very 38   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

successful New York deli. Everyone is really good at what they do and has a great sense of humor — plus it’s great food. The corned beef hash is a New York breakfast delicacy. The way they cook it with the hash browns and egg and a little crust on top, I can taste it now.

P HOTO: GABRIEL B URGOS

Celebrating 35 years in business, Sally’s was Pat O’Neal’s first foray into the restaurant industry. Today, he and wife Judith have led the pizza joint to success by creating a welcoming, family kitchen-like experience with recipes created in house for nearly 20 signature pies, homemade pastas, sandwiches and calzones.

Corned Beef Hash from Pach’s Place

It has always reminded me of a very successful New York deli... It’s always packed, so I’m not the only one who perceived that.

Speaking of New York, tell us what’s special about the dough at Sally O’Neal’s. Pat: We have a New York-style dough, which means it’s not thick or thin-crust. We make all of our own dough, and we produce between 400 and 600 pounds a day. We knew a gluten-free option was important, and we knew we could do better than the frozen dough that’s

typically used. Over six months we experimented with the gluten-free dough and ended up with a completely unique recipe. In all our dough, we use wet yeast. It’s goof-proof. It doesn’t go bad, but there’s a difference in the taste. We love the results. tampamagazines.com JULY/AUGUST 2018 39

Grilled Picanha from Terra Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse

Joe DiBartolo After retiring from the pizza business, Joe DiBartolo and his team opened Oggi Italian on Davis Islands, focusing on classic Italian dishes — like pollo al forno with lemons, which dates back to the Ancient Romans — with a healthy twist. The staff makes many of the ingredients in house, including mozzarella and marinara. What is your favorite dish outside your restaurant for dinner? The picanha and other grilled meats at Terra Gaucha. They roast it over the open fire, so it has that wood-fired, almost barbecue, taste. The servers slice 40   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

it right in front of you, and for me, the fresher the food, the better. It doesn’t have much seasoning or sauce, so you can really taste the meat. I’ve eaten pasta for so long that I’ve kind of become a carnivore [laughs]. Terra Gaucha

opened recently, but I’ve already been multiple times. How did the idea for your own restaurant come about? My team had done a lot of pizzerias, so we wanted to get out of that business. We realized people weren’t really looking for gourmet pizzas anymore, and we wanted to do something more natural and farm-to-table but still in the Ital-

Dave Burton Owner of Heights Melts, Heights Fish Camp, Tampa Pizza Co. and partner with Holy Hog BBQ and So Fresh

What’s the best thing for dessert that’s not in your restaurant? What makes it so special? It’s funny. I’m not typically a sweets guy, but it’s the King Midas at Bern’s Harry Waugh Dessert Room. I ate it as a kid growing up in Tampa. It’s simple, but it 42   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

works amazingly well. It’s carrot cake with their phenomenal house-made macadamia nut ice cream and just a little hot fudge. Every first-time visitor to Tampa should go to Bern’s because of its reputation, but no trip to Bern’s is complete without going to the des-

P HOTO : GA B R IE L BU RGO S

One of the most prominent faces in Tampa’s restaurant community over the last decade, Dave Burton is already working on his next concept, just months after opening Heights Melts and Heights Fish Camp at the Hall on Franklin. Gen X Tavern, an ‘80s and ‘90s themed bar, is slated to open later this year in downtown’s Bank of America building.

No trip to Bern’s is complete without going to the dessert room, and this is my favorite thing there.

sert room, and this is my favorite thing there. It’s amazing. What’s your philosophy for planning your own restaurants? My favorite business saying is kind of nerdy, but it’s “the riches are in the niches.” It’s best to have a concept and really do just one thing really well. What’s one dish served at one of

your restaurants that really represents that concept? One dish that’s very “Florida” is the grouper BLT at the Heights Fish Camp. It’s on a fresh-baked bun with grilled grouper, a little bit of bacon, lettuce and tomato, and then we put our in-house chipotle mayonnaise on there. tampamagazines.com JULY/AUGUST 2018 43

DO THE

WRIGHT THING FRESH OFF THE LARGEST EXPANSION IN HIS RESTAURANT’S 55-YEAR HISTORY, WRIGHT’S GOURMET HOUSE OWNER JEFF MOUNT TALKS GROWTH AND COMMUNITY

By McKenna Kelley

Of all Wright’s enormously popular cakes, owner Jeff Mount says the Alpine (far left, yellow cake with chocolate frosting and white chocolate curls) is the best selling, followed by the original chocolate cake. “But in the month of December, peppermint chocolate outsells everything,” Mount adds. That cake is only available in December, the busiest month of the year at Wright’s. Mount says about 5,000 cakes and pies went out the door the week before Christmas last year, though the single highest sales day was Thanksgiving Eve — 1,300 cakes and pies were sold that day.

Everywhere you turn, someone else is there to greet you. The sheer volume of kindness is almost overwhelming. That’s just the way Jeff Mount likes it. Mount’s grandparents, Marjorie and Pete Wright, opened the shop in 1963 and sold it to their grandson in 1981, when Mount was just 21. “My grandparents actually charged 46   JULY/AUGUST 2018 tampamagazines.com

me $100,000 to buy Wright’s,” Mount says. “I didn’t have $100,000, so I had to pay them back over 10 years. But it was genius, giving me that responsibility. This was their retirement, so if I didn’t pull it off, I knew we’d have problems here.” He indeed pulled it off, maintaining Wright’s position as a South Tampa

landmark throughout his 37-year tenure as owner and guiding it through two expansions, the latest and largest coming in 2017. The dining room tripled in size, growing from 75 seats to 225, while the larger market space now accommodates more customers picking up phone orders, grabbing cake slices to go and making their sandwich selections from the 80-foot-wide menu board (yes, you read that right). Though the company now owns the two buildings that make up Wright’s, Mount says the restaurant’s piecemeal growth was due to its renter status. “For a long time my bake shop was over in one building, and the cake decorating was in another, separated by a

parking lot,” Mount says. “When a landlord periodically said, ‘I have 1,800 square feet available, would you like it?’ I said, yes! Cake decorating [became] a lot easier.” Perhaps the most interesting thing about Wright’s recent expansion is that it bucks the industry-wide trend of restaurants shrinking in response to higher demand for takeout. That’s nothing new for Wright’s, Mount says, where off-premises dining — takeout and catering — has always made up about 80 percent of the business. Instead, Mount saw the expanded seating and production space as a chance to embrace the community even more. “It gives us the opportunity to say yes to a lot more,” he says. “We used to have a lot of folks who said, ‘I want to bring 20 people Mount uses the in for lunch Friday,’ and brigade system I had to say no I can’t do in the back that, or I’ll have a riot. of the house Now in one of our dining to ensure everything, like rooms we have a group taking phone that comes in twice a orders, gets week to knit baby caps done

Thanks to the dedication of longtime staff members like baker Byron Viteri and general manager Tammy Lambert (“I own Wright’s, but Tammy runs Wright’s,” Mount says admiringly), Mount has a hard time seeing another Wright’s location in his future, for fear of not replicating the original’s model of near-perfection set by his grandparents. “They really established a loyal following of people who were looking for a quality product and looking for things that had a little twist and creative aspects to Byron Viteri (below) began them,” Mount says. says. “So there’s somebody like us that’s tried and true, you say, ‘I’m going to go to Wright’s and get that Beef Martini sandwich because I know it’s great.’ I think we’ve been able to become a touchstone for the community in terms of the experience people are going to have with my staff and our food.”
