The New York City Mayor’s Office has invited 13-year-old Glenanda Primary learner, Meegan Hansel and 12-year-old Tiisetso Bekezela Primary learner, Thulisile Msenge to a student exhibition celebrating the completion of the 2014 Global Partners Junior (GPJ) Programme.

The two learners, along with their principals, Mr King and Mrs Mazibuko, and Mr Human from Glenanda Primary, left on Sunday night and will spend a week in New York City, flying South Africa’s flag high and representing the continent of Africa with honour as they are the only Africans taking part in the student exhibition.

Glenanda Primary was approached in 2011 by Pilisiwe Twala-Tau, the wife of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau, to embark on the GPJ programme together with Tiisetso Bekezela Primary as part of an exciting online-based international exchange programme with New York City.

The GPJ is a global awareness program located in the Mayor’s Office in New York, which connects New York City youth to their peers around the world on the internet, targeting 2 000 students in classroom and after-school settings from Accra to Warsaw, between the ages of 9 and 13. It provides children with an extraordinary opportunity to foster global awareness, build computer literacy and develop communication skills in English.

The Chief Veterinarian of Joburg Zoo, Dr Brett Gardener, had to make a very tough decision on 13 August. Africa’s last polar bear Wang had to be put down due to liver failure and chronic arthritis. The much loved bear, born on 21 December 1985, arrived at the Joburg Zoo in December 1986 as part of a conservation exchange programme with a zoo in Japan.

In recent months, Wang was pining for his beloved partner of 27 years, GeeBee, who died on 12 January 2014 due to natural causes.

So his distraught keeper Ms Agnes Maluleke ensured during the last few weeks that his days were filled with enrichment programmes and special treats, including his own Valentine’s Day celebration this year.

In November 2010, Wang was diagnosed with liver ailments and various other medical conditions, but responded well to treatment.

The Joburg Zoo did, however, indicate at that stage that they were concerned about his health.

They resolved in 2010 not to replace their ageing polar bears, and this decision is still effective today.

In tribute to Wang, the Joburg Zoo will dedicate the Zoo Trot on 14 September to the rich legacy of the last polar bear in Johannesburg and on the African continent.

Learners from both schools have been linked via Skype and online communication tools, with which they communicate with their peers around the globe. The two schools were identified by the City of Joburg’s Community Development Department, ensuring that there was social cohesion, as one school comes from an affluent area and the other from an informal settlement. This partnership is in line with the vision of the Gauteng MEC for Education, Mr Panyaza Lesufi.

Through this programme, the students have been able to share cultural experiences and build long-distance friendships online; and now Hansel and Msenge will have the opportunity to meet their peers face to face. tame TIMES wishes the two learners and their team a successful trip. REST IN PEACE: Wang in healthier days

At my church home group last week while we were discussing how we as a group could impact our communities my home group leader said something that made complete sense: “We need to clean the hearts of the people.”

He was speaking about how his company had just moved premises to a new area full of dumped rubbish and how the company should somehow make a change in the area.

He explained that, instead of cleaning the area, they needed to clean the hearts of the people who did the dumping.

I think that is spot on. If your heart is filled with love and appreciation for the life you have been given - and especially for the area you stay in - you would not dump rubbish and pollute the area, but rather safeguard it and enhance its beauty.(See page 5 and SOJO’s open letter to the Mayor-pg 6).

When we did the SOJO and Cotlands green walk earlier this year, we picked up the rubbish that had been dumped in the Turffontein area. I thought to myself: “What are the residents who stay here thinking?”

Either they could be motivated by us and say “Wow, these people are taking time out to clean our neighbourhood, so let us join in” or “Look at these fools who are cleaning up our rubbish.”

Now, the question is: how do we clean the hearts of people? I admit I do not have the answer, but I do know that even the smallest gesture that comes from the heart and shows love could be a seed to create change.

But in order to create change, we need to starting spending time with people whose hearts need to be cleaned and show them love.

Nthabiseng and Sydney Makume welcomed their second daughter into the world on 11 August, naming their 3,65 kg bundle of joy Sinenhlanhla, which means “we are lucky” in Zulu - because the Brakpan family won an all-expensespaid-for birth at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital earlier this year in the Baby on Board competition at the Johannesburg MamaMagic Baby Expo.

Proud father Sydney said that the prize had provided his family with the opportunity of having their baby in a leading private hospital, where their every need would be taken of. “It gave me great peace of mind, knowing my wife would be able to give birth without any added stresses or worries,” he said.

The maternity facilities at Netcare Mulbarton Hospital comprise a 20-bed maternity ward, three delivery rooms that include two birthing baths for parents who opt for a water birth, and a dedicated caesarean section theatre.

The NICU has a total of eight beds, four of which are isolation beds.

A dark and dirty alley Attempts to persuade the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to clean up the alley next to her employer’s store in Main and Lindhorst Streets have exasperated a Rosettenville store employee.

She told tame TIMES, “This is a major concern for my boss because not only do thieves use the alley as a place to hide - the long grass gives them an added advantage - but the alley has now also become a place for dumping rubbish.”

She has spoken to Clr Dennis Jane, who put her in contact with the correct department.

Ek hou daarvan om te dink dat ek van nou af met my verjaarsdag net jonger word. ‘n Vrou verklap mos nooit haar ouderdom nie, maar ek glo jy is so jong as wat jy voel.

Ek het verlede week my verjaarsdag gevier en dit was een van die lekkerste verjaarsdae was ek in ‘n lang tyd gehad het. Jy weet, op my ouderdom word elke geleentheid saam familie net meer kosbaar en hierdie jaar was ons kinders, kleinkinders en agterkleinkinders almal bymekaar. Een groot, en spesiale, byeenkoms wat ek vir lank nie sal vergeet nie.

En heimlik, want hy erken mos nooit sy gevoelens nie, het dit Gysie ook baie na aan die hart gelê. Hy het selfs die visstokke afgestof en saam met die kleinkinders ‘visgevang’ al het ons nie ‘n dam naby ons huis nie, maar die verbeelding skort mos niks nie.

Ek en Gysie het ‘n nostalgiese oomblik gedeel toe ons die aand in die bed lê en besef hoe geseënd ons was om ons kinders by ons te kon hê vir die naweek want mens weet nie wat môre inhou nie.

Tip: Maak die beste van elke liewe oomblik, self die oomblikke wat jy in ‘n lyn by die bank moet wag want elke oomblik is kosbaar.

Open letter to Mayor Clr Parks Tau SOJO and community members write: Why are you not leading by example?

Where are you, dear Mayor? You live in the South but the area is deteriorating daily. Have you denied your roots?

Why are you not providing those that are living on council property with sufficient amenities to have their refuse removed regularly?

Illegal dumping of waste caused by these residents is creating a health and safety hazard.

Why are you enforcing the by-laws on business and property owners but not abiding by the same rules on Council-owned land?

Why are there not enough people employed to enforce the by-laws, such as building inspectors?

Why are you reducing the value of property by allowing litter and grime to flourish, especially along our main arterials like Kliprivier Drive?

Mr Mayor, we are willing to help you, but are you willing to help us?

I have a beef about the response from local businesses. As much as I try to buy Southern, I am disappointed with two providers who responded to my request for their fencing products by measuring up, and then dropped the ball.

If one needs a product or a service, it is surely incumbent upon the supplier to follow through, at least to the extent where a quotation is supplied for acceptance or rejection.

Trees for Donnington Drive Park Paseka Matlhaku writes: We would like to thank Mr Chris Manikam, Mr Patrick Yende and Ms Ipeleng Dube from City Parks for providing us with ten trees in order to continue beautifying Donnington Drive Park.

The trees were meant to be planted on Mandela Day, but due to the volume of requests on that special day, City Parks was out of stock.

Ultimately, however, they were delivered and planted in Donnington Drive as part of our phase 2.

We have already completed phase 1 in Mogg Avenue and would like to urge the support of the community in finalising the second phase as this park belongs to all of us. Give blood to save mothers August is the month in which we celebrate women for their courage and resilience, but the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) knows the challenges many women face when they experience childbirth and other gynaecological complications.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the death of women from childbirth c o m p l i c a t i o n s continues to be a serious global health challenge. Currently, approximately 800 women die needlessly from pregnancy or childbirth-related complications every day. Severe bleeding during delivery and after childbirth is a major cause of death, illness and long-term disability.

However, blood transfusion has been identified as one of the nine key life-saving interventions for the management of pregnancy-related complications. Approximately 26% of donated blood that SANBS collects is used for childbirth and gynaecological cases.

In honour of Women’s Month, SANBS urges people who meet the minimum requirements to help prevent maternal deaths and any other complications by donating blood.

Minimum blood donor requirements: • Aged between 16 and 65 years • Good health • Weigh 50kg or more • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle

Manny de Freitas MP, Shadow Minister of Transport, writes: Just as I thought that things could not get worse, they did. The Minister of Transport is intent on squeezing the taxpayer via the e-Tolls programme, yet at the same time it squanders taxpayer’s money with no thought for the consequences.

In replies to questions from the DA, the Minister’s own replies to our questions confirm that over R1 billion was spent irregularly.

This astronomical number results mostly from contracts being extended without approval and procurement

procedures not being followed.

The figures tell us a story: taxpayer’s money is not being respected; procedures and proper approvals are simply being ignored. The R1 078 476 847 could have been spent to pay off the Sanral R1 billion e-Toll debt that Minister Dipuo Peters admitted it is in.

How can the Transport Department justify this when they continue to intimidate citizens into paying their multibillion rand e-Tolls system?

R1,3m Apple products stolen Last Thursday evening seven armed robbers escaped with R1,3 million Apple products from the iStore in The Glen Shopping Centre, injuring a security guard by shooting him in the leg on their way out.

The Glen Shopping Centre Management sent out the following media release: “The management and staff of The Glen Shopping Centre regret to confirm that an armed robbery took place at the iStore. Seven armed perpetrators, posing as customers, entered the shopping centre through entrance 9 at around 18:30 on 14 August and proceeded to the iStore. Staff were held at gunpoint while the perpetrators loaded a shopping trolley and bags with a range of Apple products,

escaping in two separate vehicles.”

“Shopping centre security responded swiftly to a panic alert and upon exit, Mr Joao Mingito, a Fidelity security guard manning the relevant exit attempted to deploy spikes at the boom when the perpetrators opened fire, wounding Mr Mingito in the leg. Mr Mingito was transferred to the Union Hospital and has subsequently been released. Staff received trauma counselling on the scene.

House-breakers arrested in Mondeor Two men, both in their twenties, were arrested in Naturena for possession of suspected stolen property by Warrant Officer Nel from the Mondeor Tracing Unit.

City Power Conviction for animal cruelty corrects City Press’ A Soweto man has pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty and, as of 25 July, has a criminal record and a five-year suspended sentence.

The JSPCA welcomes the conviction and sentence, and would like to thank the Protea Glen SAPS team, which did not waste any time in bringing the suspect to book.

In February, the JSPCA reported a case of animal cruelty in Soweto to the SAPS, and Inspector Gideon Morar went to investigate.

He found an emaciated Boerboel chained up without food or water, and covered in ticks.

Due to the severity of the dog’s condition, Inspector Morar immediately removed him and took him to the JSPCA’s expert veterinary team for help. Unfortunately, however, despite the veterinary team’s best efforts, the dog died after three days of intensive treatment.

A case of animal cruelty was then opened at the Protea Glen SAPS. “Thank you, Inspector Morar, for your dedication to your work and your love towards all animals,” Jolene Beyleveld, JSPCA public relations officer said.

Fast food, fast arrest A man was arrested on 11 August for possession of drugs by W/O Nkabinde and R/Const Ngogela from Moffatview SAPS. While waiting for their fast food order at an outlet in Rosettenville, they visited the toilet, where they spotted a man sniffing drugs. They introduced themselves as police officers as they were in plain clothes, and arrested him.

The man was taken to Moffatview SAPS.

Farnharm Drive house thieves get four years Thanks to W/O Botha from Mondeor SAPS, four house-breaking and theft suspects were convicted to four years imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 8 August.

The incident took place on 16 September 2009 in Farnharm Drive, Mulbarton. The owner of the house was phoned by a neighbour, who saw four men jumping over the wall into the property.

Mondeor SAPS was called and they tracked down the suspects as they drove away in a white Fiat loaded with the stolen goods.

Man goes missing from Talisman Foundation On 6 August, 36-year-old state patient Michael Mzwanele went missing from the Talisman Foundation mental institution.

DIPLOMA AWARDED: St Martin’s Preparatory School Choir entered the Johannesburg Festival for the Advancement of Music which was held in the Linder Auditorium, at the WITS Education Campus. They received a Diploma for their renditions of I am the Earth and Happy.

11-year-old shines in NY Aspiring actress Casey Hart scooped awards at the International Model and Talent Association (IMTA) convention in New York last month.

The Glenanda Primary learner attained first place in the improvisation category, fourth place in the Screen Test and an honourable award for Pre-teen Actor in her category of girls aged 9 to 12. The added bonus was that she was the only actor from South Africa to receive awards.

The 11-year-old originally joined Figures Glenvista for their talent competitions. She aims to gain as much experience as possible in the theatre, television and film industries in South Africa. Then, said Natasha Hart, Casey’s mother, “She will hopefully relocate to Los Angeles, in the hope of fulfilling her dreams.”

Waterstone College has had a remarkable soccer season, winning the Independent Schools Cup for all four high school teams: u/14, u/15, u/16 and the First team.

The First team then went on to take the silver medal at the prestigious St David’s Soccer Festival, losing the final game on penalties to Grey College. The u/15 soccer boys came seventh out of the 16 schools in their age group at the Festival.

The Independent Schools League final was played at Marks Park in Johannesburg, where Waterstone College won all four trophies on offer, beating Marian College and Crawford College respectively.

Recently, St David’s Marist Brothers hosted their annual Soccer Festival, accommodating top soccer schools from around South Africa, with 16 schools playing to come out on top.

Just a year after finishing ninth in 2013, under the supervision of Irish coach Eoin Fray, Waterstone ended as runners-up in the tournament.

On their way to the final, the side beat KES, St Stithians, Marian College and Hilton, and drew with Grey, before a nail-biting penalty loss in the final after the game ended at 1-1.

The final game was shown live on DSTV’s channel 319.

U/13 Co-Ed Independent champs St Martin’s Prep School is very proud of their U/13 football team, which defended their title in the Co-Ed Independent Schools Knock-out Cup when they beat SAHETI 1-0 in the finals.

Seven medals and 31 top ten finishes Eleven young swimmers from Perfect Stroke Swimming Club competed in the annual Central Gauteng Aquatics Junior Shortcourse Championships recently.

It has been a challenging winter for these swimmers, but their commitment and dedication to their training truly paid off at the Championships. With 11 swimmers competing, Perfect Stroke Swimming Club came home with seven medals and 31 top

ten finishes.

These are fantastic results, considering they were not only competing against the best in Central Gauteng, but also against their neighbours from Eastern and Northern Gauteng.

Congratulations to all Perfect Stroke Swimmers - a great summer season lies ahead.

Music, dance, film, comedy and more Jorge Ferreira at Carnival City The recently announced Absa Joburg City Festival, taking place across Joburg City from 2 to 5 October, will see an amazing array of entertainment on offer in a diversity of venues, all showcasing the vibrant energy and culture of one of Africa’s largest cities.

The Absa Joburg City Festival is an initiative of the Joburg City Tourism Association (JCTA), a voluntary group of businesses and organisations committed to growing the inner city’s tourism industry. The first Joburg City Festival took place last year. This year ten main festival venues will host some of South Africa’s most loved artists, from Johnny Clegg and Jack Parow to Loyiso Gola and Amanda Strydom. With an additional 50-plus fringe venues offering an incredible range of food, drink and entertainment, the four days of the festival will be a celebration of the regeneration of the city centre.

On 4 October the Springboks take on New Zealand at Ellis Park Stadium. To mark the occasion, Absa will align its sponsorship of the Springboks with that of the Festival by hosting the popular Boktown at Absa Campus and sup-

porting the Fan Mile from Absa Campus to Ellis Park Stadium via Maboneng.

To coincide with the opening of the Festival, the Absa Art Gallery will unveil a new collection and the Absa Money Museum will showcase artefacts pertaining to the city’s 128-year history. Atterbury Property will launch Newtown Junction, comprising a shopping centre, offices, a hotel, a gym and 2 400 underground parking bays. It will also be the venue for a number of public performances by various artists during the Festival.

By Xolani Mthombeni The last movie I watched at Southgate Ster-Kinekor was invigorating, and I was taken aback by their staff, who were most helpful and polite.

This exciting sequel is full of punch-lines, and one does not have to watch the original Think Like a Man in order to understand the sequel, Think Like a Man Too. This romantic comedy is set in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas, “an ideal location for getting married,” where the guests are gathering to attend the wedding of Candice, played by Regina Hall. Her husbandto-be, Michael, played by Terrence Jenkins, is a man who does all he can to equal his fiancé and his mother Loretta, played by Jenifer Lewis. Loretta has the perception that her son is still a young boy.

When an argument ensues between Candice and Loretta, Michael puts his foot down.

The scatological Cedric (Kevin Hart) is best man (literally), going from a nearly winning streak to doing damage control. Zeke (Romany Malco) is coerced to confront his past as it catches up with him while he is with Maya (Meagan Good). Tish (Wendy McLendon) gets a makeover while with the girls. However, I was impressed by Uncle Eddie (Dennis Haysbert). In a dulcet voice he sweeps the authoritarian Loretta off her feet. Declan (Jim Paddock) seems to pull a few tricks from his sleeve to save the day.

In a nutshell: the film does not refute the proposition that opposites attract. It is a movie where the soundtrack creates the milieu, with nostalgic songs such as Too Legit to Quit (MC Hammer) and a Poison remix by Bell Biv Devoe.The film is definitely worth watching.

Father and son through to Amateur Silver Salvo Boxing World Golfers Championship final Tournament Alberton amateur golfers, Brian Blignaut and his son Richard, both claimed winning spots at the Gauteng regional elimination in the 20th World Golfers Championship, which was played at Zwartkop Country Club.

24-year-old Richard clinched 1st place in the 6-10 flight and Brian secured his spot in the next round with a 3rd place finish in the 1115 flight. Preparations are now underway for the National Finals in September. Here they will compete against regional winners from KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape to finish in the top 2 of their respective flights in order to secure their places in Team South Africa and go on to compete against amateur TEES OFF:Brian Blignaut tees off to a victorious finish. golfers from all over world for the winning title and trophy at the 20th commemorative World Final in November.

“This was my first time entering the World Golfers Championship. The competition has a great format and I will definitely be spending a lot of time at the driving range to prepare for the National Final,” said Brian.

The World Golfers Championship was founded in 1995 by Sven Tumba, one of the most prominent sports icons of all time, representing Sweden in ice-hockey, soccer and golf.

It is now the world’s largest amateur golf championship, with national championships in over 40 countries. The Amateur World Golfers Championship is designed to give all amateur golfers the thrill and prestige of representing their nation in a global championship against players of similar skill levels.

The tournament is open to all amateur golfers over the age of 16 with official handicaps.

The winners in each handicap flight (0-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21- 25) represent their country in a 5-person team.

First black Champion Jockey

STAR JOCKEY:S’manga Khumalo was announced as the Champion Jockey of the year at the 2014 Equus Awards.

S’manga Khumalo has achieved the second of his two ultimate career goals. The first was his historic win at last year’s Vodacom Durban July, South Africa’s richest race. The second occurred on

13 August when the 29-year-old was announced as the Champion Jockey for the 2013 / 2014 national season in South Africa. This announcement took place at the prestigious Equus Awards held at Emperor’s Palace in Johannesburg, known at the “Oscars” of the South African horse-racing industry.

Khumalo is the first black jockey to walk away with this title, one which was cemented by his impressive 185 wins this season, which saw him outdo his closest competitor, Richard Fourie - who had 143 wins to his name - by 42 wins.

Khumalo ends this season with a remarkable 1 381 races.

Known affectionately as “Bling” within racing circles, he was spotted by a talent scout, who visited his school in Kwa Mashu in Durban, at age 15.

While his wiry 154cm frame had caused him much teasing as a teenager, the scout recognised in him the makings of a jockey.

In 2000 Khumalo joined the Durban Jockey Academy in Summerveld where he started a five-year apprenticeship and the rest, as they say, is history. Khumalo has been racing professionally since 2006.

After a short but well deserved rest, Khumalo will start the 2014/2015 national season with his heart set on more prominent race wins locally, as well as a number of international races.

Kudu reigns at Golden OldThe tenth Golden Oldies Dart Reunion was held on 9 August at Klipriversberg Recreation Centre. Thirteen teams took part but in the end it was the Kudu team, consisting of Martin Kirsten, Frikkie Venter, Johan Swart and Dave Rudman, that won the tournament.

In second place was the Waterbok team

(Robbie Gertenbach, Mark Robertson, Joppie van der Westhuizen and Shawn Black and in third place, the Rooibok team (Os Jacobson, Andre Pieterse, Nick Goosen and Lucky Gertenbach).

The Blitzbokke was a team consisting entirely of ladies, who spent their Women’s Day competing against the men.
