SPECIAL THANKS

Letter by Phillip Venter, Oakdene Neighbourhood Watch Committee Member Dear Editor, Tammy Hastie from Cuties Corner in Oakdene, along with the help of Jerry Selwane, have gone out of their way to ensure that animals are looked after in the Oakdene area. Jerry was asked to check up on a dog that was heard crying continuously. The poor boy, a cross chow/ staffie, had become very destructive and his owner had separated him from his other dogs. Jerry suggested some dog training to solve the problem. The owner agreed and basic obedience

training will start in November. I just want to thank Tammy for her care and dedication. As can be seen from the picture, another animal, and may I add owner, has been put on the right path to caring for animals. I would also like to give a big thanks to Ashneth Rigney for her assistance in this matter.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Being a nature lover myself, it makes me happy to see that people still care a great deal for animals.

VERREAUX’S EAGLE RESEARCH: The Klipriviersberg Verreaux’s Eagles Inc Wits Bird Club calls on the community to provide information regarding our local Verreaux’s Eagles’ activities

Letter by Marinda Pienaar I visited Reuven Old Age Home on Thursday 22 October for the first time in 15 years as a friend’s mom will be moving into this old age home and I was totally flabbergasted at the state of the place. The grounds are untidy and no maintenance is being done; the grass is long; some trees have fallen over and have just been left on the ground; there is rubbish everywhere and there are water and sewage leaks. The place needs a coat of paint, and gutter repairs. On the inside of the units there are electrical problems and plenty more issues. How can we just leave something like this to just fall into a state of disrepair without fixing or repairing anything? Who is responsible

Special Diwali feature

for the upkeep of this old age home? People actually get paid to do a job at this institution which is clearly not being done. We should feel ashamed of how our old people get treated! Please can the Council as well as the local councillors go and investigate the state of this institution.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Hi Marinda, thank you for sending me your letter. There has been a flood of complaints about Reuven over the past several weeks. I contacted ANC Ward 124 Councillor Sidney Radebe for comment regarding the state of the old age home and he

responded by saying that the management of Reuven have submitted paperwork requesting maintenance and upgrading to the Department of Housing. He noted that it takes time for things to be repaired as they wait for the availability of budget. However, he added that the MMC of Housing Daniel Bovu has made a provision of R30-million for upkeep of the City’s old age homes. Clr Radebe also highlighted the various other issues at Reuven, including the matter of residents who are living at the home who are below the age of 60, adding that this is against the law.

This past weekend for Halloween I decided to pay homage to one of my favourite musical legends – the late lyrical songstress Amy Winehouse. Clad in black with her iconic beehive, I decided to shake the look up on two separate occasions – on Friday I was the ghost of Amy and on Saturday I was the Mexican sugar skull Amy. On Friday evening I threw a Halloween party for close-knit family and friends. Being Amy for the night, I was of course, expected to put on a Cockney accent and belt out Rehab. Then on Saturday I popped into Smallville Comics in Alberton for the internationally celebrated Halloween ComicFest. It was great to see young and old dress up for the occasion. With Halloween having come and gone, I’m looking forward to the festivities of Christmas. Perhaps dressing up as Christmas Amy is in order? The beehive wig would make a great Christmas light decoration.

THANK YOU CITY PARKS I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lwande Mashige and her entire team for their hard work and dedication in the removal of black wattles at Donington Drive in Mulbarton. It is indeed a huge achievement to remove wattles as we have been battling to remove them for a long time and now we are able

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Thank you, City Parks, for the removal of alien species in the South. With water sources currently under pressure, the removal of alien plants is essential as they use significant amounts of water. Let’s keep our area clean and green together.

BEV TURK Letter by John G. Gabes I am responding to the letter that appeared in tame TIMES by Manny de Freitas, DA Member of Parliament, where he inhumanely attacked ANC Councillor Bev Turk. I and so many other pensioners have great respect for Bev for having worked so diligently and untiringly to record the complaints from the pensioners from various retirement villages in the South. Having to listen with patience and compassion to the many grievances, the discomfort, the loneliness and suffering from the elderly - I am sure her patience was very comforting, reassuring and consoling for them. This is an attribute that is so necessary in human relations, yet

so few can offer it, especially to the lonesome and isolated elderly people. Bev goes out of her way to assist wherever she can. Call her at any time, when there is an urgent need for service delivery and Bev will go out of her way to ensure that she finds the right people to do the job; what is more, she will keep one informed until she is sure that the job is properly done. We wish you success in all your undertakings, Bev, and thank you for your care and love.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Dear John, thank you for your letter. Our old age homes need all the assistance and care they can get.

THE SKY IS THE LIMIT The pair of Verreaux’s eagles that have been seen for the first time during 2003 skirting the hills above Meyers Farm in Alberton and extending along the greater Klipriviersberg ridge system requires further investigation, says the Klipriviersberg Verreaux’s Eagles Inc Wits Bird Club. “It is widely speculated that the original eagles may be the pair that previously nested in Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve during the 1990s and early 2000s; and for some unknown reason they vacated that site to cut a new urban niche for themselves within the 15km long Klipriviersberg ridge system,” explains Bo van der Lecq, Project Manager of the Klipriviersberg Verreaux’s Eagles Inc Wits Bird Club. Their main attraction is undoubtedly the natural abundance of Rock hyrax populations found within the entire rocky ridges with subsequent overspill into urban storm water drains and residential gardens, notes van der Lecq. Members of raptor conservation projects have been actively monitoring this pair since 2007 when they were breeding in a power pylon off the Reading Interchange and have raised numerous chicks to juvenile and fledging stages. During the latter half of their 2008 breeding season, their nest was deliberately destroyed which forced an 80-day-old juvenile to fledge prematurely, says van der Lecq. To prevent a recurring scenario during the following breeding seasons, permission was obtained from the late Hans Meyer to enable the erection of an artificial nesting platform on safe and secure property, he adds. “The mast was donated by the then Siyavaya Highway Construction JV and was erected in time before the new 2009 breeding season commenced. Fortunately for us, the e a g l e p a i r

diverted from reusing the power pylon and although the first breeding attempt was unsuccessful, during 2010 the pair raised a chick to juvenile and fledging stages being the first known success on an artificial man-made structure for large eagles in southern Africa or possibly Africa as a whole,” says van der Lecq. Sadly, during September 2010 the male disappeared and was never seen again. This incident resulted that the female had to raise her young protégé by herself and despite the burden associated thereto she managed successfully. 21 months and 13 days later, during 2013, the female attracted a new male that has been with her since. “Impossible to determine their ages, we are of the opinion that the new male was approximately three years young as his leggings, or feathered tarsi, were still pale and not black as found in adult eagles,” notes van der Lecq. With no breeding in 2011 and 2012, the new pair bred successfully during 2013, 2014 and 2015. Currently there is a fivemonth-old juvenile within the proximity of the farm, learning eagle skills from the adult pair. She will remain within their natal home range until at least mid November before being gradually ousted by the adult eagles. This process can take at least six weeks to complete before she finds herself on her own and outside their territorial boundaries, says van der Lecq. “Unfortunately, we do not know what the full extent is of eagle pairs’ territorial boundaries are, and we are very keen to determine this with public participation. A long-term project, it is essential that we gain as much information as possible,” he adds. “The young juvenile will be forcefully ousted by the adult eagles from about midNovember onwards and it crucial for us to obtain the information of her movements as she leaves the territorial boundaries. The only way it can be achieved is by public participation,” notes van der Lecq. “During the 2016 breeding season we are especially keen to obtain sponsorship to assist us with the purchase of a satellite tracking device that will be fitted to the juvenile and enable us to track its movements and thus determine where the young eagles disperse,” notes van der Lecq. If you’d like to assist the Klipriviersberg Verreaux’s Eagles Inc Wits Bird Club in its public participation project, contact Bo van der Lecq on raptors@metroweb. co.za; Carike Snygans on carike. snygans@ gmail.com; or visit www. witsbirdclub. org.za.

The JSPCA cares for over 200 animals at any given moment in time, many of which are under veterinary treatment. JSPCA boasts a number of staff available 24 hours a day, and not just to monitor the animals in its hospital. In June, Ward 57 Councillor, Faeeza Chame, and Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South, Manny de Freitas, visited La Rochelle and met with residents of the area who described the problems they are experiencing in their neighbourhood. “The community presented concerns such as loud music being played all hours of the day and night, illegal activities such as drug dealing, prostitution and public drinking,” explained de Freitas, adding that most of these activities take place on Johannesburg Road. De Freitas said that he and Clr Chame did a walkabout and saw for themselves the problems in the area. “I undertook to liaise with the SAPS provincial structures as there are allegations of collusion between some

local SAPS officials and criminals in the area,” he said. After they approached the provincial SAPS structures, SAPS undertook to initiate anticrime operations without getting the local SAPS structures involved. De Freitas explained that he followed up with SAPS. “The SAPS have reported that two anti-crime operations took place in September.” These proved to be successful as, for example, marijuana was confiscated and arrests were made. “SAPS advised that they are planning future operations at least until December,” explained de Freitas. “In the meantime, residents are requested to take note of any illegal activities that they may witness perpetrated by any SAPS officers,” said de Freitas.

Copper crooks imprisoned Two suspects arrested for copper cable theft in the Ormonde area have been sentenced to six years direct imprisonment. On 18 December 2014, a complainant alleged that while on duty as a security officer patrolling a premises in Ormonde, he saw a window being opened and heard a voice inside the building. He then contacted his radio controller and phoned the police. When the police arrived, the complainant entered the building with them and began to

search it. Two suspects were caught inside and found in possession of a black 15-metre cable, a bolt cutter and hacksaw. The suspects were arrested and detained at Booysens SAPS. The docket was transferred to Detective Sergeant Edward Rangwanasha for further investigation. After all the required information was obtained, the suspects appeared in court and were sentenced. Booysens SAPS management thanks all members involved for their hard work.

After years of concerns voiced by the residents of North Road along the sharp downhill bend in Roseacres, Ward 57 Councillor Faeeza Chame recently arranged the installation of much needed speed bumps. Previously, without the speed bumps, vehicle accidents occurred almost Cllr Faeeza Chame and Member of weekly. It became Parliament for Johannesburg South the norm for residents Manny de Freitas at the recently installed on that stretch of road speed humps on North Road in Roseacres to have their boundary walls destroyed due to speeding drivers losing control of their vehicles. Affected residents on the road had made many urgent requests for speed humps to be placed on the dangerous section, but to no avail. Following a recent request by the local residents for speed humps to Clr Chame, however, speed calming measures were finally installed. “I approached the Johannesburg Roads Agency about this, and after some investigation, they agreed that speed bumps were indeed needed to calm traffic along that dangerous section of road,” explained Clr Chame. Southern Klipriviersberg Road was also blessed with speed bumps at the same time, thus killing two birds with one stone. Since the speed humps have been installed, the incidence of road accidents has dramatically decreased.

I must say, I’m humbled and inspired by the feedback and reaction I’ve had to our Pensioner Power column and I am so grateful for your par-

My wife and I have always been reasonably proud of our general fitness and health and are fairly active members of our local gym. We are also avid road runners and have completed several Comrades Marathons over the years. We’ve had our ups and downs, like everyone else, also our fair share of surgery and minor operations, but generally speaking we have worked continuously hard at keeping ourselves fit and well, and up to fairly recently, have been mostly fortunate with the wear and tear on our bodies as we’ve grown older. It was all the more surprising then, after I recently took my car in to be serviced, that I found myself sprawled sideways all over the pavement outside the car showroom with a twisted ankle, a bloody and bruised knee and various assorted sore body parts. I was lucky – my foot had gone from under me and twisted the ankle, but no ligaments were damaged in the fall and by the time I had driven home the ankle had swollen considerably, but once strapped up gave me little trouble. The same can’t be said for the

ticipation, ideas and suggestions through your letters and emails. Candace, the Editor, informs me they are numerous. Due to space constraints, I will answer your letters in batches each week. It was with great interest that I read the letter from Freda Woodhouse regarding her 1983 English £1 coin. It was a challenge that piqued my curiosity, so I got to Googling (which is not as much fun as it sounds) and came across this information. The ‘round pound’ was the first to replace the £1 note and its milled edge has the Latin inscription “Decus et tutamen,” translated as “an ornament and a safeguard.” The reason for the wording around the edge goes back to the first machinestruck coins minted in 1662 - it was a device to prevent ‘coin-clipping’ which, along with counterfeiting,

knee, which even several weeks later, has a gash which hasn’t quite healed properly and is still a little tender. The moral of the story is this only goes to show you can’t take your fitness and health for granted and that silly accidents can happen in a flash for no apparent reason and just because you’ve come through some of life’s travails with little damage or illness, this is no guarantee that your healthy good fortune will continue in the future. So take care out there, be careful and concentrate when you put one foot in front of the other – especially on slippery surfaces and going down steps. This is my second nasty fall this year and it’s not a habit I care to continue. Bones take much longer to heal as we get older and our egos never quite recover from the thought of being mere mortals!

was so widespread at the time it almost bankrupted the country and became punishable by death. Coin-clipping was the act of shaving off a small portion of a precious metal coin for profit. The clippings could be saved up and melted into bullion or used to forge new coins. Freda, it appears the present day value of this coin, depending on its type and condition, could be worth anything from £4 for one that was in general circulation to £18 for a silver proof coin kept in mint condition. But rather check its value with a coin expert first, before selling.

Deepavali, or Diwali, means “a row of lights”. It falls on the last two days of the dark half of Kartik (October – November). For some, it is a three-day festival. It commences with the Dhan – Teras, on the 13th day of the dark half of Kartik, followed the next day by the Narak Chaudas, the 14th day, and by Deepavali proper on the 15th day. There are various alleged origins attributed to this festival. Some hold that they celebrate the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu. In Bengal, the festival is dedicated to the worship of Kali. It also commemorates that blessed day on which the triumphant Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On this day also, Sri Krishna killed the demon Narakasura. In South India, people take an oil bath in the morning and wear new clothes. They partake of sweetmeats. They light fireworks which are regarded as the effigies of Narakasura, who was killed on this day. They greet one another, asking, “Have you had your Ganges bath?” which actually refers to the oil bath that morning as it is regarded as being as purifying

as a bath in the holy Ganges. Everyone forgets and forgives the wrong done by others. There is an air of freedom, festivity and friendliness everywhere. This festival brings about unity. It instills charity in the hearts of people. Everyone buys new clothes for the family. Employers, too, purchase new clothes for their employees. Waking up during the Brahmamuhurta at 04:00am is a great blessing from the standpoint of health, ethical discipline, efficiency in work and spiritual advancement. It is on Deepavali that everyone wakes up early in the morning. The sages who instituted this custom must have cherished the hope that their descendants would realise its benefits and make it a regular habit. In a happy mood of great rejoicing, village folk move about freely, mixing with one another without any reserve, all enmity being forgotten. People embrace one another with love. Deepavali is a great unifying force. Those with

keen inner spiritual ears will clearly hear the voice of the sages, “O children of God! Unite, and love all.” The vibrations produced by the greetings of love which fill the atmosphere are powerful enough to bring about a change of heart in every man and woman in the world. Alas! That heart has considerably hardened, and only a continuous celebration of Deepavali in our homes can rekindle in us the urgent need of turning away from the ruinous path of hatred. On this day, Hindu merchants in North India open their new account books and pray for success and prosperity during the coming year. The homes are cleaned and decorated by day and illuminated by night with earthen oil lamps. The best and finest illuminations are to be seen in Bombay and Amritsar. The famous Golden Temple at Amritsar is lit in the evening with thousands of lamps placed all over the steps of the big tank. Vaishnavites celebrate the Govardhan Puja and feed the poor on a large scale. O Ram! The light of lights, the self luminous inner light of the self is ever shining steadily in the chamber of your heart. Sit quietly. Close your eyes. Withdraw the senses. Fix the mind on this supreme light and enjoy the real Deepavali by attaining illumination of the soul. He who himself sees all but whom no one beholds, who illumines the intellect, the sun, the moon, the stars and the whole universe but whom they cannot illumine. He indeed is Brahman. He is the inner self. Celebrate the real Deepavali by living in Brahman, and enjoy the eternal bliss of the soul. The sun does not shine there, nor does the moon and the stars, nor do lightnings shine and much less fire. All of the inner light of the self. Merge yourself in this light of lights and enjoy the supreme Deepavali. Many Deepavali festivals have come and gone. Yet, the hearts of the vast majority are as dark as the night of the new moon. The house is lit with lamps, but the heart is full of the darkness of ignorance. Realise the constant and eternal light of the Soul which neither rises nor sets, through meditation and deep enquiry.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL ON

#FEESMUSTFALL

AFRIKAANSE CHRISTELIKE PRIVAATSKOOL

“We would like to express our support to the nationwide #FeesMustFall movement,” says Amnesty International. The right to education, including higher education, is a human right. International human rights law and the South African Constitution puts an obligation on the state to progressively make higher education more accessible to everyone. By raising university fees without accounting for the decrease in access, the state is neglecting this obligation. The fee increase exacerbates the academic exclusion of poor and working class students. It may constitute a human rights violation and it may be unconstitutional. According to the Ministerial Committee for the Review of the Funding of Universities, funding per student fell 1.1% between 2000 and 2010. The tuitions fees for students increased by 2.5% annually in the same period. Both figures are in real terms. The state budget for funding of higher education, as a percentage of GDP, is below the average in Africa. Higher education is integral in combatting poverty and inequality, and it is essential for the full development of the human personality and for human dignity. (Photo: www.btimes.co.uk) A student activism movement has been sweeping university campuses over South Africa, climaxing in a march to the South African government at the Union Buildings on 23 October. The protesters hurled stones at the police guarding the Union Buildings and a few pushed through the cordon. In return, police fired teargas, stun grenades and used a water cannon on the crowd, causing protesters to run into the CBD where they proceeded to torch and overturn a number of police vehicles. Not since the Soweto uprising in 1976 have this many youth arisen to demand the right to quality, accessible education. The outrage came after the planned fee increases of up to 11.5% were announced, sparking ongoing demonstrations demanding a 0% increase in tuition fees, which the students have won. However, with the demonstrations still going strong, the students’ demands have shifted to ‘’decolonisation’’ and ‘’transformation’’ of higher education institutions.

Disgruntled students at the University of Limpopo vandalised multi-million rand campus infrastructure and pelted motorists with stones on Monday evening. The violent protest erupted after students locked officials in, minutes after they were addressed by the university’s Principal and ViceChancellor Prof Maahlo Mokgalong. Before they were addressed they shouted “Fees must fall” peacefully on campus, demanding that education be made accessible to all. Dressed in the regalia of different political parties, they chanted, “We are for free education” and sang struggle songs, saying they were united to end education injustice. Officials ran to the offices for safety as protesting students demanded that the institution assure them of free education. Students had halted examinations, demanding that Mokgalong and his management must find a solution to

the unfolding #FeesMustFall problem and their demand for free education. The explanations were seemingly not welcomed by the student leaders, who warned that if he failed to give a satisfactory response they would turn the university upside down. They blockaded the main entrance with paving bricks and rubble from concrete dustbins, barring officials from leaving the campus. During the clash some students were injured when they began hurling stones at riot police. The vice-chancellor started his address by acknowledging that students had genuine demands over free, quality higher education; but refused to enter into an agreement with the students, saying that the issue had already been escalated. “This is a national agenda - just like a no-fee agenda, it will be addressed by the president of the country who has established a committee to consider options in this regard, and

they will make recommendations,” said Mokgalong. The task team established by the president will also look at the issue of ‘black debt’. However, there was a fight among the students over how to spend the, at least, R48 000 given to them as lunch money for the controversial Friday 23 October march to the Union Buildings. Students questioned management, demanding answers on how the funds allocated to the 20 buses which ferried the students were spent. University spokesman Kgalema Mohuba confirmed the existence of damage, but said they were still determining its extent. Police had to use teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the protesting students and Mokgalong told students that it was not even university money that was being used, but did not explain the source of the funds.

BANYANA DELIGHT IN TICKET TO RIO

(Photo: www.dumelangnews.com) Banyana Banyana Captain Janine van Wyk believes qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil has erased the pain of missing out on the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. The South Africans booked their ticket to Rio following a 1-0 victory over a stubborn Equatorial Guinea at Estadio de Bata on Sunday 18 October. Not many had given the Sasol-sponsored Banyana Banyana any chance of returning victorious, but a 62nd-minute goal by USA based Jermaine Seoposenwe was enough to do the damage to the confident home side. There were scenes of jubilation at the sound of the final whistle as a small crowd of South Africans danced on the field. The coach did not escape as she was hoisted high up in the air. So confident were Banyana Banyana that they brought along T-shirts emblazoned with the words ‘NEXT STOP RIO 2016’, while the home fans could only watch and ponder on what might have been. South Africa has maintained an unbeaten record since the start of the qualifiers against Botswana, Gabon, Kenya and now Equatorial Guinea who had always had the better of Banyana Banyana. SAFA Media sat down with an excited Van Wyk to get her thoughts after the celebrations had subsided. “Firstly, I must give credit to all my teammates who went out there and gave their all and that

is why we came out victorious. We knew what a tough task it was going to be and we knew what was required of us, but we managed to stay together, keep motivated together. This was a really good win; everything went according to plan and everyone was just confident. “The feeling of belief among the players before the game was something I have never seen before, and before we went out to play I said to them, ‘This is our time - we need to go to the Olympics’. We lost out on the World Cup last year and at the All Africa Games, but there was something bigger waiting for us and that was the Olympic Games. So I am over the moon; it’s an incredible feeling and now I know we can go home and celebrate, but more hard work lies ahead of us for the Olympics. We are looking forward to it.” Van Wyk said the second Olympic Games qualification in a row is exciting, more especially for those who will be participating for the first time. “As a team it will show how much we have progressed since then. Next year it will be interesting to see and compare the level that we are at, competing against some of the best in the world. I believe South Africa has talent and can compete with international teams. It will also be a way for us to challenge ourselves to check what strides forward we have made. We can’t wait to start preparations for Rio,” she said.

The Rugby World Cup 2015 offered rugby at its best this year, with quite a few surprised, especially for Springbok supporters. The first, and certainly biggest upset in the Rugby World Cup series, was South Africa’s opening match against Japan, which we lost with a score of 34-32. The come-back was huge with a 40-point win against Samoa, restoring some faith in the team, followed by a win against Scotland with a score of 34-16. South Africa ran over the USA, scoring 64 points, leaving the opposing team no room to score. A spectacular performance by Bryan Habana placed him in the running for the leading try-scorer in World Cup history, along with the legendary New Zealand player, Jonah Lomu. The quarter-final match against Wales was nerve wracking for spectators, but the Springboks managed to secure a place in the semi-final with a score of 23-19. Unfortunately, South Africa’s chance of winning the

biggest tournament in rugby, was cut short when they lost against rugby giants, New Zealand on 24 October. The nation was devastated by the 2-point loss against the team that has dominated the tournament since its inception. South Africa took on Argentina in the bronze-final on Friday, with Victor Matfield as captain. Matfield has announced his retirement from international rugby a second time, and bowed out captaining the team that took home the bronze medal after a long and tiring tournament, when South Africa won Argentina with 24 points to 13. In the ultimate battle between New Zealand and Australia on Saturday, the defending champions became the first team in history to earn a back-to-back title of World Cup Champions. New Zealand played a spectacular game of rugby at Twickenham on 31 October, ensuring them the title with a finishing score of 31-17.
