After months of waiting in anticipation, I finally saw my favourite music group in the flesh – Swedish electronic band Little Dragon touched down in South Africa over the past weekend, performing in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively. Saturday 17 October was a true feast for the ears and eyes as Yukimi, Erik, Fredrik and Håkan rocked Jozi with their dreamy, rhythmical, shifting, moody rainbow sounds as they like to call it. Although fighting off frenzied fans around me while trying to stay right up front by the stage was quite annoying, I loved every second of Little Dragon’s performance. Sounding just as they do on their records, Little Dragon is infectious in every way. Feeling slightly down at this stage because it’s all over now, at least I have their fifth album to look forward to in the near future. We love you Little Dragon!

they want and the services will just have to clean up after them instead of cultivating a culture of cleanliness and tidiness in their daily lives and not leaving it to the services to do it for them – as is the case with the dumping issue along Kliprivier Drive going into Booysens. This has been done on numerous occasions, yet the refuse is still dumped as soon as the services leave the area. What does the ward councillor have to say about this? I rest my case.

EDITOR’S RESPONSE:

Hi Neville, Kliprivier Drive has long been a hotspot for dumping and littering. I have passed your letter on to the councillor.

NEED2READ’S NEXT CHAPTER

Local youth hero and founder of Need2Read Sheldon Spear continues to spread the joy of reading through his book donation campaign. In his latest charity venture, he donated two refurbished containers to Mohlodi Primary School in Thokoza and Boithuto Care Centre in Jacksonville informal settlement. Donated by A.G.A Transport, the containers will be used for libraries. After Sarah Wissler from Glenvista 5 Residents Association helped to secure the containers, they were delivered on Wednesday 23 September. “I was so excited. This was the best way to celebrate Need2Read’s first birthday! This is an awesome way to share my love of reading with other kids,” explains Spear. Exclusive Books will be providing the books for Mohlodi Primary. The other library will be stocked with the books that Spear has been collecting. As of Tuesday 01 September, the 11-year-old has collected 3 800 books. “I was overwhelmed by excitement from the learners and teachers. Mohlodi Primary School was celebrating Heritage Day when we arrived with the containers. It was a festive event. In the afternoon I was humbled to see the environment in which the children are looked after at Boithuto Care Centre,” says Spear. “Now I am looking for shelving for the containers. I appeal to anyone who is able to assist with this to contact me. I can’t wait to get these libraries stocked and I can launch them,” he adds. In other Need2Read news, Spear made the first of many donations to the Children’s Cancer Ward at Johannesburg General Hospital on Friday 25 September. Donated by Exclusive Books, the books will be shared between the Paediatric Cancer Ward at Johannesburg General Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, CHOC House, Johannesburg General Hospital School and the Paediatric Renal Ward.

“Thank you to Sister Ronel Venter and Jillian Graham from CHOC for showing us around the wards. This is another project I am passionate about. Need2Read supports children’s cancer awareness and cancer heroes,” says Spear. “I only need just over 1 000 books to reach my target of 5 000 books in 2015,” he adds. If you have any good quality children’s books to donate, would like to assist in collecting books, want to start a Need2Read branch in your community or if you know of a school or organisation in need of books or wanting to start a library, you can contact Adele Spear on adelespear@ gmail.com or visit Need2Read on Facebook.

In light of the community’s complaints regarding teething issues surrounding the Mall of the South, coupled with the recent robbery incident that took place at the regional shopping centre, Mall of the South representatives met with several key community role players to discuss the various matters of concern. On Tuesday 13 October, an urgent stakeholder meeting was held at the mall to flesh out the primary issues that the regional centre is currently facing, including safety and security; traffic and taxi rank issues; cleaning and greening around the mall; signage and traffic lights; as well as the removal of vagrants and vendors. At the core of the concerns are security and the false information that is being shared in the community regarding the mall via social media platforms. “We are glad that the mall has been developed in the South – it’s an asset and an investment in our community. Unfortunately a lot of rumours and hearsay is flying around and we want to stop this in order to prevent the mall from getting a bad reputation,” explained SOJO CEO Nicky Vakaloudis. On the mall’s opening day (24 September), a rumour was allegedly spread that a total of 95 vehicles were stolen. “This is damaging to our business and our image,” noted Zenprop Divisional Director: Retail Lawrence Joubert. “According to our facts, there have been nine vehicle thefts, one attempted robbery and one armed robbery since the mall’s opening,” he added. Further damaging rumours, said Joubert, surrounded the robbery that took place on Monday 12 October in which three suspects, one armed, entered Browns Jewellery and held up the store, stealing jewellery and exiting the shop towards the parking entrance of the mall. They then, he continued, joined three other accomplices on their way to the parking garages and their exit. En route to the exit, the armed suspect ran into the Swarovski jewellery store and grabbed a tray of rings. The suspects then all exited the mall, shooting once into the floor and then towards the ceiling. The entire incident took place within three minutes, concluded Joubert. “Rumours include that a staff member of the mall ran and jumped off the

second level and that she had been shot in the head. This was not the case. The staff member in one of the fast food outlets panicked on the news of the robbery and rushed out of the rear entrance of their store. On doing so she accidentally entered a refuse room, and fell down a refuse duct. This took place on the other side of the mall, a quarter of an hour after the robbery,” explained Joubert. He added, “She sustained a laceration wound to her head and is currently being treated at the Baragwanath Hospital. We confirm that she is not in a critical condition, and on behalf of the management team, we wish her a speedy recovery.”

“The community has a vested interest in the mall’s success. If there’s a problem it needs to be addressed. We want the mall to be successful but also we want our residents to be safe,” said Mike Fontes, Mondeor Sector 1 CPF Chair. Joubert further highlighted that 15 minutes after the robbery took place, SAPS members stormed into the mall in a cavalier fashion, which resulted in panic. “We need to engage with the community and law enforcement on intelligence. We need to establish ground rules and communicate with the correct role players,” said Joubert.

DA calls for an end to the darkness The Democratic Alliance Boroang Branch Executive of Ward 56 in Johannesburg and the Ward Councillor, Dennis Jane, have noted with concern a number of street lights that are currently not working in the ward. Cllr Jane said, “Over the past few months I have noticed that quite a number of streets do not have any street lights working and this creates a safety concern for the area, as crime seems to increase when there is a lack of visibility.” Cllr Jane further added that whenever he or one of his branch members sees that the street lights are not working they immediately report it to City Power.

DA Boroang Branch Chair Phillip Venter said, “It is time for City Power to get their house in order. When there is a lack of visibility it makes it difficult for entities such as Emergency Services, the South African Police Services, and the various security companies to perform their duties effectively.” Venter added that the people in the ward pay their taxes and so these services should be provided effectively and efficiently by City Power. Ward 56 in Johannesburg consists of the suburbs of Linmeyer, Rosettenville, a portion of La Rochelle, Townsview, Towerby Ext 4, Glenanda North, Oakdene, Eastcliff, The Hill and Gleneagles North.

Booysens SAPS has launched a manhunt for five suspects who were involved in the armed robbery that took place at the Johannesburg SPCA in Reuven, Booysens on Thursday 01 October. Detective Sergeant Gift Sono, who is investigating the case, is requesting assistance from the community. D/Sgt Sono is asking anyone who knows the whereabouts of the suspects to come forward. All information will be treated confidentially. D/Sgt Sono can be reached on 011 433 5200 or 082 159 1599.

Working in a FLASH On Monday 12 October members from the Booysens FLASH unit received information concerning a person who was trying to sell copper to a scrap metal dealer in the Booysens area. The members waited for the suspect and followed him to the premises. A 64-year-old gentleman was arrested for being in possession of stolen property and will appear in court. If you suspect that someone in the community is stealing or selling copper, please contact your nearest police station. Let’s beat crime together!

Wishing matric learners good luck The DA Johannesburg South constituency would like to take this opportunity to wish all matric learners all the best with their final examinations which will begin shortly. This is a stressful time for learners, and the party calls on them to study hard, and place emphasis on their studies between now and the end of their exams. The DA Johannesburg South constituency would also like to extend well wishes to educators who will oversee the examinations. Make yourself proud, and your families and communities. Good luck!

“THE ADVANTAGE OF A BAD MEMORY IS THAT ONE ENJOYS SEVERAL TIMES THE SAME GOOD THINGS FOR THE FIRST TIME.”

GENTLE THOUGHTS FOR TODAY AS WE GROW OLDER

The easiest way to find something that’s lost around the house is to buy a replacement. If at first you don’t succeed, shouldn’t you try doing it like your wife told you? A penny saved is a government oversight. The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the wrong time. He who hesitates is almost certainly right. Did you ever notice the Roman numerals for 40 are XL? If you can smile when things go wrong, you have someone in mind to blame. The sole purpose of a child’s middle name is so he can tell when he’s really in trouble. There’s always a lot to be thankful for if you take time to look for it. For example, I am sitting here thinking how nice it is that wrinkles don’t hurt! The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.

– FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE

Dear Gary, I read your article (22 September 2015) about the woes that we have regarding the City of Johannesburg. I had the same experience two years ago with the replacement of the water meter and again last year with the installation of the smart meter. However, the problem was sorted very quickly because of the following: a) Water and electricity meter readings are taken on a weekly basis by myself; I have been doing it for the past five years. There is a slight difference once the invoice is received that being due to their readings and mine. Give or take, it varies by only a few units per month. The crux is that when I walked into their offices at Wemmer Pan with a ream of invoices and readings for water and electricity, the look said it all – they were totally astounded! b) Regarding the rates and taxes, did you know that anyone who reaches the age of 60 may apply for a rebate? This works on a sliding scale so that once the age of 70 is attained one qualifies for a 100% rebate – which I am enjoying at the moment. Lastly, my one gripe is the waste and refuse charges. Being a pensioner, one does not have the refuse of a normal household, with the result being that my wheelie bin is only put out possibly every three weeks. Yet I am charged the going rate!

GOING THE EXTRA MILE Hi Gary, I love your ‘10 pointers on how to stay young’; this should apply to the young and the old. I recently read something regarding the rights of the older person and I thought you might find it interesting and share it with your readers. The Bill of Rights says, “The elderly should have access to food, water, shelter and health care, ... live in an environment that is safe and where they can live in dignity and be free from exploitation and physical and mental abuse and should be able to enjoy their human rights.” With the current high cost of living many of the pensioners find it difficult to live a decent, healthy life. Our monthly pensions just about cover our rent, electricity, medication, funeral policy and our contribution to the church, which leaves us very little for groceries, meat and vegetables. For us, it is difficult to eat a healthy diet and to keep fit because we don’t have enough money to keep us going. Regarding health care, our hospitals are so overcrowded – one spends hours in long queues, with so much discomfort and inconvenience, you feel even more sick coming out of the hospital. It is better just to avoid going to hospital and suffer in silence. Thank you, Gary, for caring.

“IT’S A RUSH AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR THE CHARITIES AND THOSE THEY SUPPORT”

ALL SMILES: Nageng Primary School After Care Centre learners touching the coveted trophy along with radio personality Alex Caige, actress Amanda du Pont, model and entertainer K Naomi Noinyane, and comedian Trevor Gumbi On Tuesday 13 October, 30 students from Nageng Primary School in Vosloorus were treated to a fun day at Turffontein Racecourse, as part of a build-up to this year’s Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile. Assisted by the Peermont Children’s Trust, Nageng Primary School is one of the 16 chosen charities that will win a share of R1million when 16 horses take to t h e track on

Saturday 31 October. Working very closely with the Department of Social Development and the Department of Education, the Peermont Children’s Trust supports 10 schools in underprivileged areas within Gauteng through the provision of school uniforms every year, providing daily hot meals for all learners, handing out food parcels for the school holidays, building jungle gyms, and hosting an annual Christmas party. The Trust also assists with aftercare

this event. They are part of a group of 16 celebrities who will be matched with the 16 racehorses on the day. “I am excited to be here for the third year in a row. The Charity Mile is a great initiative put together by Peermont, Emperors Palace and Racing. It’s a rush and hopefully it will make a difference for the charities and those they support,” said Caige. “This is a very glamorous event but more importantly it raises much needed funds for these schools and children, funds that can give them the opportunity to be what they want to be,” said du Pont who has been involved in the Charity Mile for four years. The winning charity will receive R150 000 and the one in second place will receive R100 000 with the remaining 14 charities receiving proportionate amounts of the total donation, based on the allocated horses’ placement.

Furthermore, the Peermont Children’s Trust After Care programme supports nine centres that cater for 22 primary schools in Gauteng. “This entire initiative is a great opportunity for our kids,” says Moitheri Ratshitanga, Trust Manager of the Peermont Instore Cutting & Edging Wholesale Building Supplies Children’s Trust, who brings a ALL COLOURS WHITE WISPECO MELAMINE CHIP MELAMINE CHIP ROLL-UP DOOR different school 2.7X1.8 st 2.7X1.8 BROWN 1 Grade to this event at R1599-99 Turffontein every Sliding Door LIMITED year. “For some STOCK From From of these children SPECIAL R399-90 while stocks last R599-99 under 10 boards R410-00 it’s the first time 1.5 R1649-00 1.8 R1649-00 that they can see DRAWER CHIPBOARD Bronze Only RUNNERS and touch a real 2.7X1.8 From horse.
