I was shocked when one of the interviewees said his biggest dream is to spend the last days of his life in Taitung. Taitung embraces all kinds of people and lifestyles and that’s why an ideal life can have more possibilities here. Isn’t that cool?
The critical connection among communities is people. All the interviewees share one thing in common — the strong will to make both the land and the living environment better and solve the social problems we are facing now.

The Can, founded in 2010, not only built a successful local community in Sanxia but organized Taiwan Place Making League, which connects the places making teams in Taiwan. Lin, the founder, said listening wholeheartedly and chatting with the locals is the best way to know more about a place. After the Tohoku earthquake and Tsunami hit the northeast part of Japan in 2011, the principal of Tohoku University of Art and Design was contemplating what art and design can do for the devastating place.
