WELCOME TO GRANT PARK

A WARM welcome to everyone at Grant Park today for our Macleod & MacCallum North Caledonian league match at home to Thurso. We welcome a very much changed Vikings to Tain for the first time since 2020. It was during the height of the pandemic when an in-form Thurso travelled to Tain and Saints narrowly snuck a 2-2 draw thanks to an Adam Allan header. This time around, the tables have been turned slightly, with Thurso languishing at the bottom of the table and Saints sitting in a relatively cemented position of 6th.

Since that time, Alan Geegan has taken the reigns at Saints, and Stevie Reid has been replaced at Thurso with Michael Bremner. The new managers have already gone head to head up north at Sir George’s Park in a game that went the way of St. Duthus by 2 goals to 1. Our Mr Geegan will be looking to walk away with the same amount of points on home soil. This, our first programme produced since September, is one of several ‘touches’ to matchday that we are aiming to bring back as we readjust to life without restrictions. After last weekend’s game, it was

great to be able to welcome both teams and their committee representatives back to the Royal Hotel for refreshments. All of these little touches will gradually restore the feel-good factor of a matchday. We of course have a cup final to look forward to in April. We will travel to Dudgeon Park on April 2nd to meet Halkirk United. I think I speak for all when I congratulate Geegs, Tino, Razzle and the team on the excellent work they have put in over the past few months to get us to this point. To have gone nine games unbeaten is some achievement in a very tough league, and now with

the chance to earn some silverware, they may well collect a deserved award at the end of the season. But, getting back to today and our game against the other team in Caithness. If there is one team Saints have struggled to beat in the North Caledonian League, not only in recent years, but across the many years the clubs have co-existed, it is Thurso. Alan Geegan’s win against Thurso in January was Saints’ first ever league win against the Vikings in 22 attempts. We hope that Geegs and the lads can repeat that feat and make victory over the Vikings a more familiar feeling! With that, I wish the lads all the best for the game and I hope that you as our guest will enjoy the spectacle on the park. As usual, we will have refreshments on sale at our tea hut - please enjoy a cup of tea or snack at half time, and enjoy the game! Come on you Saints!

A WORD FROM THE GAFFER Welcome to Thurso for what will no doubt be another closely fought game, which has become the norm in this fixture. Given the quality Thurso have, their league position is not a true reflection of the team. They have shown their quality by winning the Football Times Cup earlier in this season. For us it’s a chance to get back on track after last weekend’s disappointing result. Hopefully we can get back to winning ways, especially with our own cup final in sight. We have a few missing today with injury, work and illness, among them Ross Tokely, Duncan Davidson and Billy Cairns. Our ongoing long term injuries also include Adam Allan and Stuart Mackay, but we are delighted to welcome Paul Gair, Buddha (Barry Kenny) and Kyle Mackenzie back in to contention. On a poignant note, this will be Buddha’s final game for the club as he confirmed his retirement in midweek before he returns to work. I hope you will all join me in wishing him the best for the future, and thanking him for the many years he has given to the club. Best wishes, Alan Geegan

FIRST TEAM RESULTS - MARCH ROUNDUP Jake Lockett scored the decisive goal to send Saints into the final.

Saturday March 5 at Nairn Academy NAIRN COUNTY 1 (Hogg) ST DUTHUS 2 (Skinner, Lockett) North Caledonian Cup Semi Final St. Duthus are in the North Caledonian Cup Final, thanks a 2-1 win away to Nairn County reserves on Saturday. Goals either side of the half time whistle for Jamie Skinner and Jake Lockett put Saints in the driving seat before Nairn grabbed

one back through Grant Hogg. The win secures the Tain side a place in the final at Dudgeon Park on April 2nd where they will meet Halkirk United. Saints could have gone a goal down in the first couple of minutes were it not for some stellar goalkeeping from Johnny Allan. A free kick into the area bounced into the path of Euan Logan who hit a first time volley which Allan steered out for a corner with a great reaction save. From then it was one way

traffic though, as Saints put the Nairn defence under constant pressure and the hosts were saved by the woodwork on five minutes when Ben Bruce turned his man and struck the crossbar with a curling shot. Moments later, a Tokely flick on found Jake Lockett inside the box, but his lashing left foot effort flew across goal and wide of the post. With twenty minutes gone, a long kick out sent Bruce clear down the right, and

after cutting inside he shot straight at the onrushing Wilson. Good delivery from a Gary Millard free kick found Bruce for another shot on target, this time a strongly placed header which Wilson had to tip over the bar. Just minutes later, broke free down the same side and flashed another shot across the face of goal. Geegan’s men finally broke the deadlock on 40 minutes and it came from a corner kick. A high ball from Paul Gair was headed onto the bar by Ross Tokely, but pouncing quickly to nod the ball over the line was Jamie Skinner to make it 1-0. A couple of minutes later, Saints were certain they had the ball in the net again when Tokely hit a downward header onto the goalline. Nairn scrambled the ball into the clutches of the keeper as St. Duthus players claimed the goal. Referee Stuart Randall waved play on. Saints doubled their lead five minutes into the second half. A superbly worked team goal that started with Lockett led to a quick one-two

between Jamie Skinner and Ben Bruce, the former receiving the ball on the byline. A sublime turn followed, leaving his man behind him and placing a fantastic ball across goal, Lockett was left with the easy task of side footing the ball into the net. The two goal advantage was short lived though, albeit in controversial circumstances. A dubious corner kick awarded after defender Duncan Davidson believed he had shepherded the ball out led to Nairn pulling a goal back, Grant Hogg connecting with a first time shot at the far post. A stuffy final 30 minutes followed with chances limited for both sides, but Saints will feel aggrieved not to have had a penalty kick on 70 minutes after the ball seemingly struck the arm of a Nairn defender after a dangerous Gair free kick into the box. Substitute Caillean Eaglesham made himself a handful after his introduction, forcing Wilson to make a save on 85 minutes and moments later doing well to win a corner with a tight angled

shot blocked on the byline. Despite the close scoreline, Saints ultimately saw the game out in comfortable fashion, ensuing their place in this season’s North Caledonian Cup Final. Team: John Allan, Gary Millard, John Skinner, Duncan Davidson, Jamie Skinner (Lewis Smith 72), James Mackay, Paul Gair, Ben Bruce (Adrian Voigt 81), Ross Tokely, Jake Lockett (Caillean Eaglesham 81), Finn AsChainey (Billy Cairns 81) Sub not used: Barry Kenny Tuesday March 8 at Dingwall Academy ST DUTHUS 1 (As-Chainey) AVOCH 1 (Macdonald) Friendly Match St. Duthus used their midweek training night to play Inverness & District amateur side Avoch in a bounce game at Dingwall Academy. With a few players rested, there were spots in the starting eleven for teenagers Adrian Voigt, Caillean Eaglesham and U18 squad members Harry Spence and Alex

Mackenzie, who all came in and performed well during an evenly contested first half. The Avoch side, a select of players from Invergordon, Loch Ness, Alness and Inverness, took the lead just before the interval with a header from defender Charlie Macdonald. Several changes followed in the second half as Saints used the opportunity to try different formations and rotate players. John Allan in goal produced a couple of good saves as Avoch put Saints under pressure during the second period. With five minutes remaining though, a curling drive from Finn As-Chainey was tipped over the bar by Neil Hastie and from the resultant corner, the Saints man headed into the net to make it 1-1. Team: John Allan, Will Ross, Harry Spence, Barry Kenny, Alex Mackenzie, Paul Gair, Daniel Christie, Jake Lockett, Billy Cairns, Caillean Eaglesham, Adrian Voigt Subs: Ben Bruce, Finn As-

Chainey, James MacKay, Duncan Davidson, Gary Millard Saturday March 12 at Grant Park, Tain ST DUTHUS 0 ORKNEY 2 (Rendall, Simpson pen.) North Caledonian League Saints’ nine game unbeaten run in league and cup competition came to an end today, with a 2-0 loss to Orkney in the Macleod and Maccallum North Caledonian League. A first half header from Owen Rendall which just squeezed over the line gave the Islanders the advantage before a second half penalty condemed St Duthus to defeat. Midfield two Paul Gair and Ross Tokely were the big misses for Saints as they recalled Daniel Christie to middle, and there was a complete change in the full back roles with Will Ross and Sam Ross coming in. There was a place on the bench also U18 defender Harry Spence who had impressed midweek. Orkney came out the traps the better of the two sides

and after some pressure they found the net from a corner, albeit with the aid of a linesman’s call. A well connected header from Owen Rendall was met on the line by John Skinner, but his block was just deemed by AR Ian Ross to have crossed the line. Moments later, Jamie Flett went close with a header just wide, and at the other end, some good link up play created Saints’ first real chance when Ben Bruce cut inside to flash the ball across goal, with Christie and As-Chainey just short of meeting the ball. Liam Valentine was called into action on 10 minutes when a neat ball into the box found Jake Lockett, who turned and tested the goalkeeper with a shot that had to be turned wide. John Allan made a double save on the quarter hour mark to keep a rampant Orkney at bay, but it wasn’t all one way traffic, with Bruce and Lockett both causing problems. The pair combined on 20 minutes with a quick one two on the right hand side and with his final chance,

Lockett could have done better, hitting the ball straight at the keeper who parried it to safety.

heavy rain causing both teams problems, as neither created much in the way of clear cut chances.

Just minutes later, a ball into the box was headed by Bruce into the clutches of Valentine.

Persistent play from Lockett and substitute Caillean Eaglesham on the 70 minute mark created arguably Saints’ best chance of the game when Lockett sent a low cross into the area and As-Chainey at the far post tapped just wide when it seemed Valentine was all at sea.

Saints will feel aggrieved not to be awarded a penalty kick on the half hour mark for a high boot and possible handball inside the area. With the play moving quickly referee McDade waved played on. The weather turned in the second half with wind and

On 82 minutes though, the game was wrapped up with a mistimed tackle

resulted in an Orkney penalty. Chris Simpson, a seasoned campaigner of North Caledonian football, made no mistake with the spot kick to make it 2-0. Team: John Allan, Will Ross, Sam Ross, John Skinner, Duncan Davidson (Barry Kenny 53), Jamie Skinner (Adrian Voigt 87), James MacKay (Caillean Eaglesham 70), Daniel Christie, Ben Bruce, Jake Lockett, Finn As-Chainey (Harry Spence 70) Ref: S McDade

JOHN SKINNER HITS 100 APPEARANCES Robert Ross presented him with a bottle of Glenmorangie.

St. Duthus football club’s talismanic defender John Skinner hit a big milestone last Saturday, when he made his 100th competitive appearance for the club. The centre half had already chalked up a 24 year career in the North Caledonian League having played with Balintore, Fearn Thistle and Muir of Ord Rovers over the years, before taking a two year break from winter football. He joined Saints at age 42 in September 2016 and made his debut in the club’s revival match against Invergordon, featuring in a 3-3 draw at the Recreation

Team manager Alan Geegan said: “John is to be congratulated on a fantastic achievement. Hitting 100 games is a great milestone in itself, but to do so when you played your first game after you’ve passed the forty mark is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the commitment he gives to Grounds. John went on to the cause. captain the side in 2016-17 “He is a great role model and has been a pleasure to and 2017-18, and added the North Caledonian Cup play with and now manage.” (2018) and Football Times Cup (2020) to his medals list. Now, six seasons on from his debut, he becomes the first post-revival player to hit 100 competitive appearances for the club. His achievement was recognised post-match at the Royal Hotel, where club chairman Niall Harkiss and coach

CLUB NEWS & UPDATES

Pitch upkeep The club wishes to thank Kiltarlity Shinty Club who have been very generous in loaning us their pitch rolling for the months of January to March. Steve Morris of Alness has been looking after our playing surface throughout this time using the roller and has done a fantastic job. Pitchside sponsorship The club wishes to thank Richard Mackenzie Building Contractors, Johnston & Farrell Vets and Forbes Jewellery for their recent renewal of pitchside sponsorships. We

could not compete each year without the support of local business and we remain very grateful to all of our sponsors. Under 18 team The club are actively seeking a new management team for their Under 18 team set up from 2022-23 onwards. Ideally a shared position, the role of coaching coordinator would be ideally suited to someone with past playing experience at a good level, with a keen interest in coaching. Scottish FA endorsed

training will be provided, and full support of the club is assured. Interested parties are welcome to get in touch with the club committee via email on committee@ stduthusfc.co.uk. Generous donation from former player and committee member St. Duthus FC are delighted to acknowledge receipt of £1500 from the Friends of Alan Ross Fundraiser fund. The donation is a share of an overall sum of over £20,000 raised at the Friends of Alan Ross

Fundraiser event, which was arranged in August by former Saints player Jim Oliver in tribute to his lifelong friend Alan Ross. The event was held to raise funds for charities and causes chosen by former Tain St. Duthus player and committee member Alan, who sadly passed away in October after a battle with cancer. This kind gesture follows an initial donation of £500 from Jim, who agreed to also donate 50% of the profits from the sale of his book, “What the **** are you playing at?” to causes of Alan’s choosing. Speaking last month, Jim said: “I spoke with Alan about where we could put some of the proceeds from the fundraiser and my book sales. “As we both played for Tain and had a life-long love of the game, it made sense to put something back into the club.” Club chairman Niall Harkiss said: “St Duthus have always been indebted to Alan as one of our greatest custodians, and as has been evident in many messages we have received in recent months, he is sorely missed. “We extend our thanks to Alan’s wife Liz, his family

and Jim for this wonderful gesture.” Volunteer welcomed The club were delighted to welcome Iain Morrison as a regular volunteer with the club going forward. Iain has been extremely helpful with matchday preparation and has been a supporter of the club for several years. Welcome aboard Iain! Coaching awards for Alan Geegan First team manager Alan Geegan has been completing badges on the Scottish FA coaching pathway during the winter months, and has so far completed the 1.1 and 1.2 modules on route to completing the first stage towards C licensing. Players In/Out The club welcomes new signing Caillean Eaglesham who signs on after spending time on trial with Saints, Deveronvale and Inverurie Locos. A defensive midfielder who can also play in forward position, the Evanton native is an ex Inverness Caledonian Thistle youth. With a heavy heart, the club bids farewell to Barry

‘Buddha’ Kenny who plays his last game for the club today, bringing to an end his playing days of 26 years. Often balancing his football with work offshore, Buddha brought invaluable experience to the squad and made 26 appearances for Saints over five seasons, scoring three goals. We wish him all the best going forward and all the best in whatever he does next. ‘History of Football’ Open Day The Tain & District Museum and St. Duthus FC have been working behind the scenes to prepare an exhibtion on the history of football in the local area, doubled up as an ‘Open Day’ for the club. Exhibition pieces are likely to include historic trophies, old uniforms, collectables and trinkets along with some well researched stories on the game over the years. Visitors are expected to have the opportunity to pop by and discuss the club’s history with several on hand representatives. More to be announced in due course.

ST. DUTHUS U18 TEAM NEWS CLOSE CALLS FOR YOUNG SAINTS WITH WIN OVER NAIRN AND LOSS TO ‘POOL MARCH was a month of hard fought battles with top ranked competition from the upper half of the table for Saints’ U18 team in the Highland League North division. On March 6, Saints traveled to Nairn to meet County’s fifth placed hopefuls. County took the lead on 24 minutes when Jack Maccormick fired home a rebound after Callum Young rattled the crossbar. Their lead lasted just six minutes though before Johnie Beattie scored for St Duthus to make it 1-1, firing home the rebound after the home side failed to deal with a free kick. Young turned scorer, netting ten minutes into the second half. But

the Tain side remained undeterred and Beattie struck for a second time on 72 minutes with a cool finish into the top corner. With both sides chasing a winner, the plaudits were reserved for Alex Mackenzie, who hit a stunning strike to secure the three points for St Duthus in the 92nd minute of the match. IT was a game of two halves at Grant Park in Tain as west met east in the Ross meeting of Ullapool and

St Duthus on March 13. A four minute barrage shortly after the half hour mark saw Ullapool breeze their way into a three goal lead with strikes from Louis Sears (2) and Shaun Marshall. Sears secured his hat-trick on 57 minutes and it seemed like the job was done for the Wester Ross side. But a second half comeback was on the cards, and Saints almost drew level with a double from Alex Mackenzie on 75 and 80 mins and a penalty scored by Ryan Quigley four minutes from time. Alas, the game finished 4–3 in the visitors favour. Saints have four games remaining and they are all away from home - a tough prospect for the young team who head into the Easter holiday season. TOP SCORERS 2021/22 Johnie Beattie - 10 goals Alex Mackenzie - 6 goals Ben Loy - 3 goals Ryan Quigley - 3 goals Ross Nicol - 2 goals

TODAY’S VISITORS: THURSO FC Thurso travel down to Tain on the back of their first league win in a while, but suffered the embarrassment of an admin error which meant they immediately lost the points to opponents Nairn. Since Michael Bremner has taken the reigns at Thurso, there has been a mixture of highs and lows. The major high came in their second game, beating local rivals Halkirk United to win the Football Times Cup. But since then, there have been more lows to speak of, with the team sitting bottom of the league. The manager sees the main objective in the last six games as winning as many points as they can to rise up the table. He said: “Recent performances against Invergordon, although we lost, and against Nairn, have been encouraging - but it all boils down to the players we have available on a Saturday. A big problem of ours is injuries, work and Covid. We are having to try find new players to bring in every week.

“When everyone is available we have a good squad of players like Marc Macgregor, James Murray and James McLean who have all played at a higher level with Wick. “Younger players like Luke Manson, Innes Mackintosh, Grant Aitkenhead and Aaron Wilson all very good at North Caley level too, so it’s just a case of getting everyone available. “I hope I can keep these lads and add a few of my own players in for next season and I’m confident we can be up the top half of the league.”
